Jean Twenge and Elizabeth Nolan Brown: What Do Millennials Want?
A boomer, a Gen Xer, and a Millennial discuss the causes and conflicts of today's generational gaps.

Today's episode is an audio version of The Reason Livestream, which takes place every Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern on Reason's YouTube channel.
A recent poll found that 44 percent of Millennials want to criminalize misgendering people, showcasing a censorial attitude that has been building among some young people for years. Many Millennials also feel left behind economically, especially compared to baby boomers and Gen Xers.
Can Millennials and boomers ever get along? Or are they creating a generational gap every bit as vast as the one between boomers and their parents?
Today's guests are Reason Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown, who reported on the poll and writes about generational issues, and psychologist Jean Twenge, whose new book is Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents–and What They Mean for America's Future.
We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, including the central role of technology in changing how we live and how we interact with people younger and older than us.

"A boomer, a Gen Xer, and a Millennial"
...and the bartender said, "what is this, some kind of joke?"
🙂
And the bartender says, “Wait, don’t tell me! Let me guess. A glass of red wine for the Boomer, a single malt for the Gen Xer, and a Bud Lite for the Millennial.”
They want ENB to make them a sandwich. She even responded to the tweeted request a couple years ago.

This could not possibly make less difference to people in the real world. It could not make less difference whether one generation "gets along" with another generation. What people want only makes a difference in the real world if 1) powerful politicians try to give it to them at someone else's expense; or 2) they work at achieving what they want or pay for it with their own money. I have read fairly extensively over the years and can't recall ever having come across an example of the generations EVER having "gotten along" with each other!
Reminds me of the old joke: Q—How do you tell if a woman is having an orgasm? A—Who cares?
What Do Millennials Want?
Ask them. Wait 5 minutes. Ask again. The answers won't match.
First you ask me to pay attention to you, then you want me to stop pointing out your flaws and berating you for them. Make up your fucking mind!
Parent of a progressive - pay attention to you
Parent of a boomer - pointing out your flaws and berating you for them.
As I can personally attest, Red Forman (the dad on That 70s Show), was every 70s dad.
You better shape up, Unicorn, or you'll be wearing your ass for a hat!
You know what you need to get unstuck in California? My foot getting stuck in your ass!
Is this Teen Reason? Or Reason Inquirer?
All Reason is TeenReason nowadays. Old Reason emigrated to the UK and now calls itself Spiked.

Quite a few genXers wouldn't mind a millennial side piece.
That would shut up and side-piece, of course.

What Do Millennials Want?
Free stuff
Along with "The Greatest Generation's" New Deal, Boomer's "New Frontier" and "War On Poverty," Xers "The Era of Big Government Is Over, Only It's Not"....
1967 was the earliest a boomer could vote. The “New Frontier” and “War On Poverty, and Vietnam were already in place. The greatest generation voted LBJ in with a landslide.
Free everything... except speech.
I'm just a couple years off that gen x and millennial cutoff and will say that millennials absolutely suck. Even those about my same age group have an inflated sense of self-importance and derive their values through adapting to socially contrived tolerances. Having ENB as the token millennial and Nick as the token boomer actually captures a lot of those generations worst attitudes. No clue who the other lady is, but if she's a true gen x'er then her general attitude will be "fuck off, I'll figure it out"
What do boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials all want?
Pretty much low taxes and the government to leave them alone to live their lives.
Very few Americans want that.
...says the paid Russian, on cue.
Many Millennials also feel left behind economically, especially compared to baby boomers and Gen Xers.
These same millennials believe they shouldn't be expected to work. Maybe there's some sort of link we should try to help them understand.
Racist!

I dunno… I was going to try something Godwin-ish about a group that wants to throw gays off buildings and another, less vengeful group and ask if they can ever get along… then I thought, meh...
This happens with every generation. Someday some percent of Millenials will grow up. Some are hopeless in every generation, and remain Demunists.
How about:

They report that depression and disillusionment were increased in Biomers, flat in Gen X, and much worse in the Millenials.
The underlying problem is said to be technology, but not the way they think.
TV greatly raised Boomers’ expectations of life, they felt more entitled than earlier gens. Gen X did not have a similar increase in exposure to new things, so little change.
Millenials sue to the Internet saw much more that they could want, and now feel entitled to that stuff.
The thread is the level of advertising that each gen saw and created expectations/entitlements in them.
I have made $18625 last month by w0rking 0nline from home in my part time only. Everybody can now get this j0b and start making dollars 0nline just by follow details here..
