Fiona Harrigan: Why Utah Republicans Bucked Trump and Biden on Afghan Refugees
Assistant Editor Fiona Harrigan explores why the Beehive State might be uniquely suited to welcome Afghan refugees.

In August 2021, President Joe Biden committed the United States to withdrawing combat troops from Afghanistan. After two decades of fighting, U.S. involvement in the war would finally be over.
A year after the chaotic and violent withdrawal, America's exit from Afghanistan has produced new challenges. Among the biggest is the resettlement of roughly 100,000 Afghan refugees uprooted by the war.
You might assume that there would be a political consensus that the United States had an obligation to help rebuild the lives of its allies.
But many Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, opposed large-scale resettlement operations. One Republican member of Congress warned that Biden's pullback from Afghanistan could become "an excuse to flood" the U.S. with refugees.
There was, however, a clear exception to the GOP's opposition: the state of Utah. The state has a Republican governor and a Republican attorney general, and there is a Republican majority in the state Legislature. By one measure, it's the second-most Republican state in the country. Yet, in the aftermath of the Afghanistan troop withdrawal, state and local officials were united in welcoming refugees.
That's the topic of this week's episode of The Reason Rundown With Peter Suderman, featuring Reason Assistant Editor Fiona Harrigan.

As Koch-funded libertarians, we have two main reasons for demanding unlimited, unrestricted immigration:
1. We want to import cost-effective labor for Charles Koch, and it's just a fact that Black and Brown bodies from outside the US will work for lower wages and fewer bathroom breaks.
2. We want to import obedient Democratic voters since Democrats are objectively the more billionaire-friendly party.
It makes sense to send Afghans to a red state like Utah since our long-term objective is to use immigration to transform every state into a single-party Democratic stronghold like California.

I wonder how Muslims will react to the altered Mormon shahada, 'There is no god but God and Joseph Smith is the messenger of God'.
So...Republicans in a blighted part of unenlightened America choose to practice Christian charity and the morally and intellectually superior Democrats in New York and DC speak about the virtues of 'undocumented immigration' and complain when some of the tide wash up on their shores.
Every episode to date has been a worthwhile addition to the original reporting and to the other Reason podcasts. One small request: please eliminate the "clicking" noise that plays as you're reading your introduction. It is distracting enough to me that I have to rewind at several points during your intro to hear what you're saying. Keep up the good work.
LOL
I’m sure Utah will enjoy the glories of Afghanistan’s enlightened civilization.
Because they are Mormons and stupidly believe the best of everybody, even murderous Muslims? Not that I'm saying Mitt Romney is a Muslim, as far as I know.
Let me guess, Afghans into polygamy too?
I kid! I kid!
I’m guessing you think the grooming gangs in England are hilarious too.
"why the Beehive State might be uniquely suited to welcome Afghan refugees."
Because Mormons will be OK with Afghan men bringing their multiple child brides? Maybe, but the boy-fucking thing might cause some friction.
I didn't listen but -- because it's mostly a desert with some mountains? Feels like home!
Libertarians for terrorism! Worst part about it, there is a segment of Mormons who see Muslims as fellow travelers due to the (albeit superficial) similarities between Mormonism and Islam. Jeff Flake delivered a speech using this claim at a mosque in north Scottsdale. However, a short time before he spoke, the congregation openly praised the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

I'm 100% sure that Fiona doesn't live in Utah, and that there won't be any Afghan refugees on her couch.
"Yet"
Nice piece of bias-enfircing editorializing.
