Immigration, Trade, and Narrative-Warping
Why border activity doesn't look that much different under the Biden administration, and how the media framed the Atlanta shootings

In this week's edition of The Reason Roundtable, Matt Welch, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Peter Suderman, and Nick Gillespie cover a gamut of topics, from our country's perception of sex to how Biden's trade and immigration policies compare to Trump's.
Discussed in the show:
1:58: How the Biden administration is handling the immigration crisis.
20:35: How the Biden administration is handling Trump's tariffs.
32:58: The Atlanta shootings and cultural perspectives on sex and the body.
48:33: Weekly Listener Question: Two common questions about military campaigns are "How do we define victory?" and "What is our exit strategy?" How would the Roundtablers each answer those with regard to the coronavirus?

Lol narrative warping. Like how ENB blindly repeated Rupars narrative about the cop excusing the Asian massage parlor shootings?
Reason loves the fucking narrative. It is where they get their news source from such as Vox and Twitter.
Robbie is the only one who even investigates the narratives, and only at times.
See last years BLM riots, covid coverage, 5 people dead from Capitol attacks, unmarked vans on Portland, etc.
Fucking funny though.
I'm puzzled by this because not only has Reason been ignoring narrative warping lately, they've all been actively engaged in it.
Gillespie flat out narrative warped/lied himself when discussing this on Maher
the other night:
"Gillespie then knocked former President Trump, accusing Trump of using "racist" rhetoric that branded the coronavirus as Chinese, but also stressed that "turning this particular instance into something which it may not, that in the end will not help you reach out to people who are racist."

They need to virtue signal to remain on good standing with their cocktail buddies. They live in deep blue areas. They all admitted they voted democrats before "finding libertarianism," they are doing so to feel self important and believe they have principles. The same principles they give up at the simplest mean tweet or bad look from their friends on the left.
Their role of faux opposition, and they know it.
Not only funny because it actually did originate in China but because the people describing it as "The Chinese Virus" aren't indicting the race. At worst, they're making the rather sensible statement that, for health and sanitation reasons, wet markets are probably not a good idea.
The proclamation that "It's not a Chinese virus." is a pretty narrow statement in sympathy to or defense of the Chinese Government.

"How do we define victory?" and "What is our exit strategy?"
Victory: Kill 'em all and count the bodies.
Exit: Look around for anyone alive; if none, go home.
(note: there is nothing in the military about "hearts and minds" except as places to put bullets)
Now answer this: What is best in life?

Ha!
To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you & to hear the lamentations of their women...
"Why border activity doesn't look that much different under the Biden administration"
That's not a fair statement. One key difference is that Drumpf was running concentration camps and putting kids in cages. Biden liberated and dismantled those on day one.

Sounds like a proper libertarian to me.
He should have started Albino Lives Matter.

KMW and Nick are right. There is a very easy way to end the entirely manufactured "crisis at the border". Just let them in. Test them for COVID, quarantine them if necessary, but at the end of the day, let them in, give them a court date and a work permit, and that solves the entire "crisis". No more kids in cages, no more family separations, no more children coming here alone over thousands of miles.
Ah yes. Further drive down wages for cheap labor. Once upon a time the Democrats supported American Labor. But, my god, those uppity serfs want to be paid a living wage, and that means the masters of the universe can't afford... something. Beezos has personally made over 50 billion dollars since the pandemic began, but he still wants mujados to be let in because they will work for peanuts. And heaven forbid that some upper middle class family has to actually clean their own house!
The Mexican government data say that the average Mexican has completed 7.2 years of education. About 70% of the 'children' are 14-17 years old males who have had a few years of bad education, speak no English, and have started their entry into American society by ignoring the law.
How many will get jobs under a $15/hour minimum? Doing what exactly?
And 100 years ago you would be saying the exact same thing about the Irish or the Italians or the Poles. So what? Over history, fretting about immigrants always ends up being a nothingburger. You get Catholics immigrating, the Know-Nothings in New England go berserk and gain power via demagoguery and pass a bunch of authoritarian laws, but as things turned out, America didn't turn into a Papist Theocracy after all. A bunch of Chinese immigrated, California politicians go berserk and pass a bunch of authoritarian laws, the US Congress passes its Chinese Exclusion Acts modeled after that, but guess what, the place didn't turn into an Asian hellhole after all. Irish and Italians and Poles and Germans immigrated, you get a lot of politicians passing restrictive immigration laws (motivated in no small part by eugenic-inspired ideas about the 'inferiority' of the 'Italian race') and guess what, America didn't turn into Little Rome or Little Warsaw. And now the current panic is about immigration from Latin America. So the cycle continues again. More hysteria, more authoritarian laws, but in the end, it will be the same. Nothing will come of it, America will not turn into Mexico Norte, and life will go on.
You are such an ignorant sophist. Prior generations didn't have nearly the welfare state of today you ignorant fuck.
But we are talking about people that want to work and are willing to work at jobs that others already in this country. People with simple needs and wants. Their impact on the welfare state is likely to be minimal and likely less than the money we are spending to keep them out. The decrease in legal costs alone are likely to make accepting more people a better idea.
Why don't you just grow a pair.
Los Angeles is already turning into El Salvador. You can't have open immigration AND a generous welfare state WITHOUT extremely high taxes. It' ludicrous to hear the Reason gang (and you) go on about just letting everyone in. No thanks, not in my already overcrowded city.
Excellent rebuttal. People come to this country and usually within a generation are integrated into the country and adding value to the country.
What is the alternative? Build huge walls? More kids in cages? We had 4 years of a president who made building a wall his signature issue. How far did he get exactly? There aren't going to be mass deportations, there is no public stomach for that. Crack down on Bezos all you want, and he will simply move out of the country. What exactly do you want to see happen?
There are going to be lots of deportations. The vast majority of refugee cases are ultimately rejected, which means they get sent back home.
I am not sure how, but we need to find a way to get more border judges. If it takes people a month to get here, and then their case is immediately heard and they are back in their home country 3 weeks later, that is going to represent a strong disincentive to come here. If they get to spend the next two years here, and only then get a court date and shipped back, you basically have an unregulated temporary worker program.
Increase in wealth is not the same as “making money”.
Lol. Remember how in the last thread jeff was pretending to care about the deficit, now he just wants to add more people to the welfare state sans any rational policy.
God damn obese clown.
Remember how you are still a juvenile moron who never left the 7th grade?
So he's a few grades ahead of you and you're jelly?
Remember how you’re a dishonest piece of garbage?
that solves the entire “crisis”. No more kids in cages, no more family separations, no more children coming here alone over thousands of miles.
I can't think of a more detached set of ideas. How do you quarantine people without separating them into cages? If people are coming to the border for jobs and citizenship at crisis levels, unless you've got a job for everyone in Mexico how does giving them jobs and letting them in resolve any crisis? Even if you've got a job for everyone in Mexico who wants one, isn't turning over the entire country to the cartels still a/the crisis?
It's like you didn't even put the least bit of thought into actually solving the crisis. Like you're Dustin Hoffman from Rainman just mindlessly repeating "Solves the crisis. Yeah, definitely. Definitely solves the crisis."
Can I declare myself a refugee of the US Government and request asylum here? What about somebody more like Kyle Rittenhouse?
Agreed.

Hey editors, would you please start doing transcripts? I can read much quicker than I can listen. Ok thanks.
They do the podcast to do less work, not more.
Just watched poor Nick on Kennedy. Bad Biden jokes aren’t going to make up for Reason becoming a left wing rag.

A few minutes drive from the U.S.-Mexico border, a bus station in Brownsville, Texas, has become an unlikely way station for Central American migrants fleeing their countries and risking all for a new life in the United States. Volunteers give out pizza, clothing and arrange transport while city officials conduct COVID-19 tests.

narratives lol. y'all would know.
There has been a real attempt to separate the target of the Atlanta shooter from his motive. People like Nick acknowledge our past history of anti-Asian racism, yet want to stop at this shooting. Attempts to say this was awful but it was sexual frustration and not racial hatred. But if the motive was sexual frustration why were all the targets Asian businesses. This individual did not shoot people in one of the video/sex toy shops you we along the highway, nor a gentleman's club. I think there was some anti-Asian racism here and we need to acknowledge this.
They must morally signal in order to maintain excellent relations with their drink companions. They inhabit deep blue environments. They all stated that they voted Democratic before "discovering libertarians," and that they do so to feel important and to believe they have values. The same values they abandon when they receive a harsh tweet or a bad look from their left-wing buddies.
