    The federal government "shut down" and then voted itself back into business while you were sleeping.

    That was the scariest shutdown yet. Like a stalker in the night.

  • ||

    Hello.

    "Around three-quarters of last year's new union members were millennials, according to new research from the Economic Policy Institute."

    Shocking.

  • Zeb||

    Imagine that. The cohort that is starting or settling into careers is joining unions more.

  • Mickey Rat||

    And overall, only 8% of that cohort are union menbers compared to 13% of next older age bracket.

  • Rhywun||

    The article is claiming some sort of union "renaissance". I'm skeptical, myself - and not just because of the source. I think what it really represents is a greater percentage of low-wage jobs being associated with large chain stores and such, which tend to be unioninzed. In other words, they don't have any choice in the matter. Joining a union in order to make 8 bucks an hour instead of 7.50 and handing over the extra to some vampire sucking union goons isn't exactly a win for these people.

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    I'm also with Zeb. It said it was somewhere near 180,000 millennials joining unions. That's a pretty small gain overall. And the chart also show a 75,000 person drop in the 40 something age bracket. So that data is not very clear.

    That being said, as long as government is uninvolved I don't have issue with unions per se.

  • some guy||

    We'll never know what was taken from us, what we lost...

  • Mike Laursen||

    Well, I am traumatized by this micro-shut down and may need counseling.

    With hunger widespread amid a fifth year of painful economic implosion under President Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela has seen a frightening surge in attacks on increasingly lawless roads...

    It's always the lawless roads' fault.

    At least they have roads. At least it's not a roadless libertarian paradise.

    I'm starting to think that words don't mean anything to our betters in the Capital District.

    Don't bring that YA baloney in here, Millennial. And it's just The Capitol.

  • Citizen X - #6||

    That's not the reference i was making.

    Yuengling is great. It's why President Obama drank it.

  • Mickey Rat||

    Wagreen's generally does not have gang fixture restrooms in its stores, so it is not quite the same issue as at Target.

    However, why segregating by gender identity is permissible, but segregating by sex is an affront us unexplained. Though the nonsense language in their press release that sex is "assigned" at birth is evidence if the quality if their logic.

  • Rhywun||

    sex is "assigned" at birth

    Sounds like the mgt has been taken over by SJW pod people - that is their language.

  • Mickey Rat||

    The subjective trait must be treated as if it were objective and the objective trait must described as if it were subjective.

  • BYODB||

    Yep. Although I'm all for it since it by necessity eats the concept of the Progressive identity groups whole. They're not an ally now, and may never be one, but eventually they will be the enemies of Progressives. It's a necessary evolution for their mutually exclusive goals.

  • Zeb||

    Well, like .01% of people are born intersex, so obviously we have to treat everyone like they might not be clearly male or female.

    It's a bit disturbing that all of these ideas that have been festering in academia for decades are all of a sudden (or so it seems to me) out there in the world.

    Obama was certainly the President right after one of the largest market drops in history. But you can't give him credit for the rebound. Considering how far the market dropped we could have elected a blind squirrel in 2008 and still seen that recovery.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    And Trump walked into a full employment, low interest rate, global market recovery and tried to take credit for it.

    Walgreens has adopted a gender-blind bathroom policy in its stores.

    As a nonbinary person, I welcome this. I can't tell you how many times I've needed to use a public restroom and had only "men's room" and "women's room" to choose from. Instructing me to use the men's room just because I have a Y chromosome is a form of misgendering me, really no better than calling me "he / him" when my preferred pronouns are "they / them."

    And don't even get me started about my miserable high school experience, when all I had to choose from was the "boy's soccer team" and the "girl's soccer team." Why must I conform to outdated, unscientific binary gender categorization just to play a sport?

    So as usual, Paul's big speech turns out to be a big PR stunt.

    He's all about theatrics when it doesn't make a bit of difference, but when it might actually change things (e.g. Session's confirmation) he's suddenly a loyal party soldier.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    After getting trounced in 2016 Rand is done for on the national level.

    GOP voters hate him.

  • some guy||

    GOP voters hate anyone who is principled. Democrat voters hate anyone who can do basic math.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Actually that is wrong. The last three Dem presidents were known as wonks - in the weeds guys. Clinton knew 100x more budget math than any conservative idiot.

    Dubya and Trump are known as incurious laggards.

  • Mickey Rat||

    Democrats have been running that playbook since at least Ike and Stephenson. It is not credible anymore.

  • Rhywun||

    But the people are desperately crying out for a technocrat!

  • TrickyVic (old school)||

    ""Clinton knew 100x more budget math than any conservative idiot.""

    Clinton had experience dealing with republicans and balancing budgets with three terms as governor of Arkansas which requires a balanced budget.

    Clinton also had a trick that was later ruled unconstitutional, the line item veto. Clinton would agree to fund things the GOP wanted as concession to get what he wanted. Then strike those funds with the line item veto after the budget was passed.

    My goodness, it's almost as though Rand Paul is a... is a... politician!

  • Unlabelable MJGreen||

    What might have changed about Sessions's confirmation?

  • Stormy Dragon||

    Session was barely confirmed, so a no vote by Paul would have been far more significant. They just needed 3 more nos to stop Sessions.

  • Unlabelable MJGreen||

    So he still would have been confirmed, and the petulant president would see Paul as an enemy.

    It would have been nice and honest of Paul to have voted against Sessions, but unless he could wrangle those other votes behind the scenes*, the political move does look a lot smarter.

    *not to suggest that Paul actually tried to gather those votes

    ICE wants to join the posh but secretive intelligence "community," - it's like joining a neighborhood with a strict Homeowner's Association (HOA). While ICE can afford a place there and the HOA fees, will the existing inhabitants welcome this working-class organization that deals with dirty would-be immigrants on a daily basis?

    The "intelligence community" is just another nice-sounding US government-created phrase to hide what it really is: a group of government agencies that conduct illegal surveillance and operations. Similar to "regime change" for war to change a foreign government we don't like or "compound" for someone's home, farm, ranch, or estate we're about to destroy, along with whoever's inside.
