Black Lives Matter Students Shut Down the ACLU's Campus Free Speech Event Because 'Liberalism Is White Supremacy'

"The revolution will not uphold the Constitution."

WMScreenshot via BLM at WMStudents affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement crashed an event at the College of William & Mary, rushed the stage, and prevented the invited guest—the American Civil Liberties Union's Claire Gastañaga, a W & M alum—from speaking.

Ironically, Gastañaga had intended to speak on the subject, "Students and the First Amendment."

The disruption was livestreamed on BLM at W&M's Facebook page. Students took to the stage just a few moments after Gastañaga began her remarks. At first, she attempted to spin the demonstration as a welcome example of the kind of thing she had come to campus to discuss, commenting "Good, I like this," as they lined up and raised their signs. "I'm going to talk to you about knowing your rights, and protests and demonstrations, which this illustrates very well. Then I'm going to respond to questions from the moderators, and then questions from the audience."

It was the last remark she was able to make before protesters drowned her out with cries of, "ACLU, you protect Hitler, too." They also chanted, "the oppressed are not impressed," "shame, shame, shame, shame," (an ode to the Faith Militant's treatment of Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, though why anyone would want to be associated with the religious fanatics in that particular conflict is beyond me), "blood on your hands," "the revolution will not uphold the Constitution," and, uh, "liberalism is white supremacy."

This went on for nearly 20 minutes. Eventually, according to the campus's Flat Hat News, one of the college's co-organizers of the event handed a microphone to the protest's leader, who delivered a prepared statement. The disruption was apparently payback for the ACLU's principled First Amendment defense of the Charlottesville alt-right's civil liberties.

Organizers then canceled the event; some members of the audience approached the podium in an attempt to speak with Gastañaga, but the protesters would not permit it. They surrounded Gastañaga, raised their voices even louder, and drove everybody else away.

The college released what can only be described as an incredibly tepid statement:

William & Mary has a powerful commitment to the free play of ideas. We have a campus where respectful dialogue, especially in disagreement, is encouraged so that we can listen and learn from views that differ from our own, so that we can freely express our own views, and so that debate can occur. Unfortunately, that type of exchange was unable to take place Wednesday night when an event to discuss a very important matter – the meaning of the First Amendment — could not be held as planned. …

Silencing certain voices in order to advance the cause of others is not acceptable in our community. This stifles debate and prevents those who've come to hear a speaker, our students in particular, from asking questions, often hard questions, and from engaging in debate where the strength of ideas, not the power of shouting, is the currency. William & Mary must be a campus that welcomes difficult conversations, honest debate and civil dialogue.

Absent a promise to identify the perpetrators and make sure this never happens again, the college's statement is meaningless. If officials are just going to stand by while students make it impossible to even have a conversation about free speech on campus, the matter is already settled: there is no free speech at William & Mary.

These students have clearly made up their minds about free speech: they don't want to share it with anyone else—especially Nazis, but also civil liberties lawyers who happen to be experts on the thing they are willfully misunderstanding: the First Amendment. Their ideological position is obviously incoherent—Liberalism is white supremacy? What?—and would not stand up to scrutiny, which is probably why they have decided to make open debate an impossibility on campus. They really shouldn't get away with this.

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    The hostility is what kills us. All of us make up meanings of words, language is defined by use and that varies tremendously over time and individuals. The thing that makes it work, at least according to the Six Functions of Language, is that we are actively trying to communicate with each other, and not attempting to willfully misinterpret what is said. Those last two features are increasingly lost.

    But in politics evolution of words is the issue at all, it's outright propaganda. Describing your opposition's position accurately doesn't hurt them. You hurt them by stretching the truth or outright lying about them.

  • MarioLanza||

    "It's funny, because conservatives go the other way and get all upset when word definitions evolve."

    No. It is not evolution of words that is concerning. It is the papering over of evil with "nice" words to sell the evil to the general populace that is concerning. Late term abortion truly and far more accurately should be described as in utero vivisection. But support for the barbaric procedure becomes "pro-choice".

    ""Not given them attention."'

    I think that worked better before social media. Now they video it, post it on line, and get praise from their peers. That is the attention they seek. You have no way of denying them the attention they seek

  • p3orion||

    "Silencing certain voices in order to advance the cause of others is not acceptable in our community..."
    ...and therefore the perpetrators have been expelled effective immediately."

    Something to that effect might be worth trying.

  • Red Rocks White Privilege||

    Not given them attention.

    That's not how I remember it. I was bullied as a kid, and that shit didn't stop until I got fed up enough to go after the guys doing it.

    the trick about groups like BLM is that they demand to bully people as much as they want, but start shrieking "DAS RAYCISS" if anyone doesn't prostrate themselves to them. It's not an accident that some of these people, even some more mainstream figures, are now bold enough to demand that white people should buy their groceries, pay their bills, and leave their homes to some random black family when they die.

  • Cloudbuster||

    Dude, my mom told me that kind of crap when I was a kid in school. The only advice that ever worked was my dad's advice: punch back.

  • UnrepentantCurmudgeon||

    I grew up in a mixed Latino/white neighborhood, and as a white nerd I got my full share of being bullied. I wasn't a good fighter, but I would fight ... and a few bloody noses later the bullies decided I just wasn't worth the effort any more and left me alone.

    If you don't stand up to a bully the bully will roll right over you. Can you say "Munich 1938"?

  • Eek Barba Durkle||

    Can you say "Munich 1938"?

    I don't have to say what you tell me to ANYMORE!

  • Tyler R||

    This isn't the same as being bullied, though. Here's the thing.. if these people actually had a civil conversation, unfortunately some of the more left thinking people would sadly agree with them that "hate" speech shouldn't be protected. But when they're just yelling and being obnoxious, they're completely killing their cause among the vast majority of people who are even semi rational. As far as I'm concerned I hope they do this all the time.

    You enforce the rules. Right now they don't suffer consequences so they have no fears, but if colleges would enforce rules then they would have to bear a burden for doing this. Start having campus security ask them to leave, if they refuse arrest them. Give them tickets and put them on academic probation. Continue to do this and expel them. There was a ton of police and firm statements at Berkeley stating that anyone breaking rules would be arrested. Notice how there was no problem at Berkeley?

  • Paper Wasp||

    Arrest all of them. Expel any of them with low GPAs, because it's obvious that those kids aren't at the school to get an education, they're there to stir up shit and have angry little tantrums and thoroughly waste whatever they're overspending on college.

    Fine the ones with high GPAs. Call it "malicious mischief".

    Also, stop responding or doing anything but shrugging when anyone calls you a "racist." As an individual, as an employer, as an institution. Collectively, everyone just stop caring about this tired, overused, magic-manipulator word. Don't deny it, don't dispute it, don't be manipulated by the lazy and entitled into giving them free, unearned shit. Just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

  • GamerFromJump||

    How do you make a bully stop?

    If history is any evidence, by smashing away at them until they stop.

  • Ron||

    If you don't stop those who silence others soon there no one will be willing to speak and the silencers will win. Sometimes you have to put your foot down and in cases like this the meeting should have police present to stop such actions it will be the only way.

  • rudehost||

    Not really. Assuming they were actually students making an example of them and expelling every last one with no tuition refund would work quite well without the need for police.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QqgNcktbSA

    Watch the woman in this video. What is remarkable about the video is not what she is saying, which is the usual liberal nonsense, but how she is saying it. She clearly has never been taught that there could ever be any consequences to what she says or that there is any need to be respectful to anyone. Her parents, teachers, and peers have given her the impression that she can just emote and scream at anyone for any reason.

    In a more civilized era, the guy on the receiving end of her tantrum would have either laughed at her or more likely slapped her. Instead, it is Yale. So, he rolled over and gave her exactly what she wanted and of course praised her for behaving like an untrained animal. At some point, she is going to run into someone who isn't so kind. If not that, her complete lack of self-control or understanding of consequences is going to cause her to do something criminal in a place that won't overlook it and end up ruining her life.

    If her teachers and parents had hated her and wanted to set her up in life for failure and misery, they could not have done a better job than what they did.

  • TrickyVic (old school)||

    Thanks John, but I can't watch the vid where I am.

    It is the one that went viral of the mob attacking the guy at Yale for having the nerve to defend people's right to wear Haloween costumes the mob found triggering. She didn't come with the goal of discussion. She enjoys publicly acting out. It is a form of emotional release, much like some get by attending a horror movie as they scream and jump around with their friends.
    Her actions can be understood only as psychological, not logical. They cannot be addressed by/with a verbal argument. She might get help from watching a video of herself with her psychoanalyst.
    A friend might induce that when she calms down, e.g., a hand on the shoulder, or taking her by the hand, making eye contact, and telling her "Seek professional help."

    I know how do deal with these folk. They won't engage in dialogue, but they are on the edge of violence. All the prof had to do was call her a stupid cunt. That is the word that will trigger any SJW beyond their endurance and either her or her thugs will attack.

    Suffer through the beat down, or even get a few licks in, but even Yale can't refuse to expel those who commit assault on campus.

    The secret is to trigger them before they put the masks on.

  • Dizzle||

    I was thinking along the same lines. The way you deal with a bully is not simply fighting back or sticking up. The way you really do it is by baiting them, punking them, or cheapshotting them before they get their next chance.

    Someone needs to stage an even like this as bait. Wait for them to do this and then boom, their mics cut, a banner drops behind them reading "this is what free speech suppression really looks like" the lights dim on them and spotlight a man dressed in ww2 regalia who proceeds to explain the similarities between them and the fascists, in museum reenactor style.

    P.S.
    Robby, please brush up on your Marxism. This is absolutely coherent in the context of class struggle ideology.

  • Red Rocks White Privilege||

    It's not even so much Marxism as it is an outgrowth of critical race theory, which has essentially become the de facto philosophical stance of the universities (and as a result, most secondary education as well) since the New Left college students became academia's professors.

  • Microaggressor||

    Critical race theory is Marxism with a modern twist. Turns out, the working class has it too good under capitalism so a revolution from that angle will never gain traction again.

    You simply replace zero-sum economic class struggle with zero-sum race/gender/etc struggle and the march toward socialism may continue. Reparations soon, comrade.

  • 68W58||

    "Critical race theory is Marxism with a modern twist.'

    Absolutely-the left just kept looking for a means to destroy America (because it was the greatest example of liberalism in the world) and found it with critical theory. Unless they can be destroyed, which probably means the destruction of the University system, we will see more of this-not less.

  • ThomasD||

    Critical Theory is Marxism with a post modern twist.

  • Paper Wasp||

    I love the reparations plan; it's genius. "We already spend our welfare and other subsidies poorly, and we utterly waste our 'free' public education and don't at all value that investment of tens of thousands of dollars per pupil per year. What would solve that problem is to give us even more money."

  • Finchster||

    "Indeed, the sermons which…the Mensheviks and Socialist-Revolutionaries preach express their true nature: 'The revolution has gone too far. What you are saying now we have been saying all the time, permit us to say it again.' But we say in reply: 'Permit us to put you before a firing squad for saying that. Either you refrain from expressing your views, or, if you insist on expressing your political views publicly in the present circumstances, when our position is far more difficult than it was when the white guards were directly attacking us, then you will have only yourselves to blame if we treat you as the worst and most pernicious white guard elements.'" Lenin, Political Report of The Central Committee of the Communist Party at the Eleventh Congress on March 27, 1922.

    There is no right to use "free speech" against the workers' and peasants' revolution, Comrade.

  • Mickey Rat||

    I disliked the show's treatment of the Sparrow movement. In the book they got influence because the Faith was the only social institution that was marginally functional and attempting to establish some sort of order, even if it was the wrong tool for the task. They had excesses, but mostly because the aristocracy and the crown had abdicated their duties to the people. The show just made them straight up evil religious zealots.

  • SFC B||

    As said by Mickey Rat in the book the FM and the Sparrows are very clearly the only force in Westeros that is in Kings Landing trying to protect the small folk. That's less obvious in the show, but it's clearly there. In addition, Cersei is guilty of everything she was arrested and to be tried for and more. Heck, they were even legitimized by Cersei and then acting under the authority of King Tommen.

  • John||

    In the book, after repeatedly torturing Winston, O'Brien asks, "Do you remember writing in your diary, 'Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four'"?

    At Winston's "yes," O'Brien holds up his hand and asks Winston how many fingers he's holding up. Winston gives the correct answer of four. His torturer then asks, "And if the Party says that it is not four but five – then how many?"

    Winston again gives the correct answer of four, and the torturing begins anew with added intensity.

    O'Brien continues to alternate between asking how many fingers and torturing Winston, who insists that the correct answer is four. As the pain becomes unbearable, Winston blubbers out, "How can I help it? How can I help seeing what is in front of my eyes? Two and two are four."

    O'Brien responds, "Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy becoming sane." [emphasis added]

  • John||

    That exchange, found in chapter II of Part Three, is chilling in its similarities to what's currently taking place in our society. Whenever you hear someone use the word "woke," sub in "sane" and imagine 1984's O'Brien doing the speaking. It will be a smooth substitution.

    From the Psychology Today link

    For the next 15 to 20 days (police aren't sure just when Vigliarole died), the man was starved, burned, beaten, and tortured. (Even 10 years later, Spurling could recall Rita's chilling response when they questioned her about shoving a three-foot metal bar up Vigliarole's rear: "He was a homo anyway." How did she know? "When I stuck the bar up his rectum he wiggled.")

    She is a real charmer.

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    Huh, I always wiggle on 3 foot metal bars too. Am I a homo?

    What did she say at the Women's March though? That seems more relevant to me.

  • Rhywun||

    She is a real charmer.

    That quote's not even from the same woman, if I'm reading the story right (it's a little convoluted).

  • John||

    It is a poorly written article. But here is the better portion

    The three girls took turns watching the man. It was Donna who delivered a ransom note and tape to a friend of Vigliarole's, who was able to get a partial license plate number of the car she was driving. He notified the police, who traced the plate to a rental car facility. On April 6 the suspects were arrested, and detectives spent 36 hours straight interviewing the seven men and women. "We had to keep going back and forth and catch them in lies," said Spurling. "It was a never-ending circle of lies."

    Spurling himself interviewed Donna: "I couldn't believe this girl who was so intelligent and nice-looking could be so unemotional about what she was telling me she and her friends had done. They'd squeezed the victim's testicles with a pair of pliers, beat him, burned him. Actually, I thought the judge's sentence was lenient. Once a jailbird, always a jailbird."

  • John||

    Rhywun,

    Basically, she was pretty and well-spoken so people felt sorry for her. I guess being pretty and well spoken makes squeezing someone's balls with a pair of plyers less painful or barbaric or something. Had she been a man, homely or less intelligent, she would still be rotting in prison. Her case is a microcosm of so much that is wrong with the justice system in this country.

  • Rhywun||

    All I'm quibbling about is that it's not at all clear that she "literally tortured a man to death".

  • John||

    It is very clear she did. She was part of a gang that tortured a man to death and happily participated in the torture. Whether or not she actually delivered the blow that killed him is beside the point.

  • Rhywun||

    participated in the torture

    OK maybe that part's in the other piece I didn't read. I only read the Snopes piece.

    One question I ask, and this gets people surprisingly upset even when I don't mean it to, is to ask them to clarify their definitions. So they call "Liberalism is White Supremacy." You then ask them to give them their definition of white supremacy. Try to get them to define it even semi-rigorously. Seems like a lot of the time people have not thought that far ahead about it.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    Do you honestly expect a dialogue of that magnitude? They just rush the stage and make a lot of noise and push there given agenda; don't need no stink'n dialogue. You might as well try reasoning with a drunk.

  • Microaggressor||

    It's literally Marxism repackaged as racial class struggle. They perceive the status quo as white supremacy by virtue of the observable fact that white people have it good (they are the bourgeoisie) and some other races aren't as well off. The go-to explanation for this disparate outcome is that whites as a class oppress the other races, literally keeping them down so they can stay at the top. This stems from a zero-sum view of economics. In this view, the only way to achieve equality is by hindering the progress of the white class and elevating the status of the POC with the helping hand of the state. Capitalism, premised on private property, is an obstacle to this goal, because when the police stop Antifa from breaking shit and looting, or when those god damn Republicans vote against socialist redistribution, they are perceived as upholding inequality. This is what they mean when they use the word fascism.

    Liberalism, which includes free speech, permits those evil Rethuglicans to use their counterrevolutionary rhetoric to indoctrinate the masses back into the false consciousness of individualism. Anything that moves the needle away from socialism is perceived as regression and must be stopped by any means necessary.

  • Vernon Depner||

    Intellectual rigor is white supremacy.

  • paranoid android||

    I think these guys are reading their playbook backwards. The turning on your allies and devouring them is supposed to happen *after* you've seized power, not before.

  • John||

    That is what I thought as well. Also, you don't demand increases in police power until you control the police. You are supposed to be all for freedom and justice right up until you control the apparatus of state and no longer have to do so. I guess we should be thankful that we are fortunate enough to have these emotional retards for leftist revolutionaries rather than the smarter and much more dangerous ones of the past.

  • Microaggressor||

    And thank god for that. But that doesn't mean they're harmless. Their influence in the media and entertainment forms the most powerful force for creeping socialism through the political process. If you value your right to own property, and by extension, to not starve like a Venezuelan, you should oppose them at every turn.

  • KDN||

    The turning on your allies and devouring them is supposed to happen *after* you've seized power, not before.

    Yeah, at this rate they'll end up like libertarians.

  • Nihil||

    You think they don't have power now? These trolls should have been rounded up by security and expelled from campus. Instead the university makes some limp defense of free speech knowing if they come down on the reprobates they will be treated even worse than Claire Gastañaga. Their sphere of influence is limited to campuses for now, but these degenerates are graduating. It's only going to get worse.

  • Vernon Depner||

    They are graduating, and they will go to work in government, because they have no useful and productive skills.

  • Johnny B||

    And universities. Don't forget that many of them will someday be teaching your kids.

  • UnrepentantCurmudgeon||

    Their sphere of influence has expanded at least to certain professional sports. Can anyone figure out at this point what all these "unity demonstrations" are actually about? It's kindness to call it a hodge-podge. Yet, all must get in line and at least pretend to be "woke" (whatever the hell that means when you can't even defend your narrative on core facts). The NFL and NBA have both been hijacked by this nonsense, and it isn't going to stop

  • Calidissident||

    You would think people opposed to white supremacy and who doubtlessly view the current administration and government as a bunch of white supremacist fascists would be against giving them the power to decide what speech is too offensive to be legal.

  • Citizen X - #6||

    Like BUCS said above, they have probably not thought that far ahead about it.

  • Vernon Depner||

    Like Nihil said above, that they were not dragged out of there by security shows that they DO have the power there.

  • paranoid android||

    It makes sense if their endgame involves all of those people getting the guillotine.

  • Vicq Ruiz||

    I've had online discussions with antifa and BLM sympathizers in which they reference the guillotine with relish, showing their historical ignorance of what happened to Danton and Robespierre, and what happened afterward.

    There's a reason why their censorship is extrajudicial. They have no illusions about relying on the state to do their necessary silencing. They would prefer to replace the state with a dictatorship of the woke.

    But in the mean time, threats of violence will do, as long as nobody steps in to stop them. We like to say that the state has a monopoly on violence, but they tend to only enforce that when their own interests are at stake, like somebody cheating their taxes.

    Tell me more about how they have an ACTUAL argument to make.

    If nobody is punished, then the college means literally not single word of this.

    Understand, the Right is the only friend you have. The Left HATES everything you stand for. The Right doesn't like it, but doesn't tend to do this idiocy.

    The universally coveted white woman on her knees? Everything else is machinations upholding supremacy.

  • Cloudbuster||

    It was the last remark she was able to make before protesters drowned her out with cries of, "ACLU, you protect Hitler, too."

    Lol, useful idiot is no longer useful.

    The example govt. sets every day in every way is: violence is moral/proper. Moreover, some groups are vilified and some are portrayed as victims who are morally superior, with special rights. This combination will bear fruit as social disintegration. It is inevitable. It is unsustainable. We are witnessing the collapse of our society.

    Of course, should the collapse's focus turn inward toward govt. in general, WWIII will unify, temporarily. After the fallout (literally and figuratively) the collapse will continue.

    Perhaps the internet will provide for the creation of a sane alternative community. Boycott MSM. It is an extremely subtle form of mind control. I stopped watching MSM news 35 years ago. Entertainment is now getting just as bad. See "Star Trek: Discovery" for the latest blatant military/industrial pitch for WWIII. How many identified it? How many absorbed the message uncritically?

One of liberal politicians more beloved groups, BLM, shut down that bastion of liberalism, the ACLU. Not only that - they were shouting liberalism is white. Common sense dictates that the Left needs to keep the poor being poor in order keep their voters. They don't want their constituents to succeed - eghads! They might become capitalists and employ even more people! Look the liberals ran an old white man and an old white woman on their ticket for president. They're right in the sense that modern liberalism is a cover for group supremacy. Note I didn't specify white supremacy. It isn't so much a matter of race, but one of class. Whether they'll admit it or not most liberals think their political beliefs make them superior to others and that this gives them the right to impose their values on society. The same thing is true for factions on the right, but at this moment in time it's people on the left trying hardest to force their dogma on the unbelievers. And they're also instigating violence, which is step 2 in the fascist guidebook.

  • SukieTawdry||

    My experience dealing with the irrational I learned growing up with a communist father. He immigrated from Italy as a teenager, made a fortune in the US, and retired at age 45 to Florida where he still resides wasting my would-be inheritance on specious social charities, most notably the Carter Foundation. As a boy, my father's outbursts struck me as so disturbing I learned to cope by AGREEING WITH HIM! Yes, that's right. But I don't just agree, I one up him. I say, "Papa, you're so right! Americans are vile and evil, we need to be destroyed. Yes, we are so racist, so racist in fact, we should all be killed. That's right, Papa, white people are inherently savage. So why wait for them to grow up and cause so much misery upon the innocent non-white citizen? Let's get them before they leave the neonatal units! Let's do what all those mass killers do. It's justified. Yes, Papa, it is. Let's go kill your grandchildren now. They, like all of us, deserve the harshest of punishments." You should see how wide my dad's eyes get. Ever seen a scared horse? I use this technique on all these communist zombies roaming our streets--they do make their opinions clear--and it really does work. Try it. It's great satisfaction to throw back in their faces such utter irrational hatred disguised as humanitarian intellectualism and at the same time getting them to shut the hell up. It's the only gimmick that has ever gotten them to shut the hell up.

    I have to commend their stamina, especially considering that all the ones I see in the video range from overweight to obese. Chanting and standing that long cannot be easy for some of those people.

    As Sargon reminds us, when these types of people are in charge, "liberals get the bullet too".

    I guess someone has to do the thankless job of making everyone else look sane.

    Wonder when reason.com concern for the First Amendment will get to this one:

    A bit late to comment but I think it's better late than never. That photo of BLM protesters was worth a internet meme. https://imgflip.com/i/1x6g31

    I strongly support BLM's cause when it comes to police abuses. But I despise the way they take over events and shout down others. That really backfires .

  • Praveen R.||

    OK I looked at the video, Quite a few white students in that BLM group. Just a bunch of idiot leftists on campus of all races

  • JunkScienceIsJunk||

    This is precisely why using the phrase "leftist" is so useless. Who's the "leftist"? Is it the BLM group? Or is it the ACLU group? Because in any other story, most people would be calling them both "leftists." And if you're referring to the BLM group, I guarantee that the majority of americans who self identify as "leftist" support the ACLU group ahead of the BLM group. So it's completely useless to dismiss this as a "there goes leftists again..." story when in fact most "leftists" agree with you and I on this issue.

    It's also worth noting that the university -- like the vast majority of universities in america -- come down in favor of speech, not silencing speakers. I agree with Robbie that there probably should be some consequences for the disruption that was caused (it's still not clear that there WON'T be), but it should also be acknowledged that this is a sensitive and politically-charged issue. They're probably taking the tactful approach here.

    These look like paid protestors probably organized by some moneyed interest to cause chaos. All their completely asinine slogans were canned and designed to be revolting to the greatest commend denominator.

    Fake protestors. They were mostly white kids from what it looked like. Were they even students? Doesn't sound like anyone even has information about who they are.

    It's performance art.
