DETROIT, MI—Local government leaders across the state are paying close attention to Detroit's bankruptcy case and most view the city's fate as important to Michigan overall, according to results of a University of Michigan survey released Monday.

But a majority also opposes state financial help for Detroit, the results indicate.

The University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy sent questionnaires to top officials in the state's 1,856 units of local government last fall, getting responses from 1,353 county, city, township and village governments.
