New York Mayor Zohran Mamdami | BiancoBlue/Lev Radin/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom/Dreamstime
(BiancoBlue/Lev Radin/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom/Dreamstime)

Dare I say it? Is it possible that New York City's public schools are actually being changed for…the better these days? Not what I expected with Mayor Zohran Mamdani in charge!

Most students will now be prohibited from using generative AI until high school, with a moratorium put in place on all digital devices until third grade. Teachers for all levels will not be able to use AI in their grading of assignments. "The department is also recommending caps on screen time, such as limiting middle schoolers to no more than 45 minutes a day," reports The New York Times. "So-called companion chatbots, which offer emotional and mental support, will be banned in all grades."

"The Education Department is 'disabling' AI features in 38 existing citywide ed tech contracts," reports Chalkbeat. "Officials haven't provided a list of those companies. But Mamdani's education adviser Ailish Brady said that the widely used digital tutor Amira and the digital version of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt reading curriculum—the most popular of the three mandated NYC Reads literacy programs—will both 'turn off' their AI components."

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

In New Mexico, reports Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown, public schools were required to use Amira "for mandatory literacy assessments, dyslexia screenings, and weekly tutoring sessions in kindergarten through second grade." This came with a whole host of privacy and efficacy worries. "'Our families are asking questions we cannot fully answer: Where are these voice recordings stored, and for how long? Who can access them? Are they used to train or refine the vendor's AI models? What safeguards protect them from breach or misuse?' wrote Jennifer Guy, superintendent of Los Alamos Public Schools," according to Brown.

I'm personally rather worried about Amira being both bad for child development and unhelpful at teaching kids how to read. "Teachers and parents are reporting that Amira can't understand little-kid voices well, or kids with lisps or accents, and is inaccurately scoring kids on literacy and dyslexia assessments that are used to determine future school interventions," notes Brown on X. "And that having to repeat themselves a lot, or being constantly misunderstood by the robo-teacher, is giving kids more anxiety around learning to read."

AI is, of course, not inherently bad, nor is screen time necessarily a problem. Claude, ChatGPT, and all the rest are very useful research tools. I use them in my own research for Roundup sometimes. But learning how to be a critical consumer and verifier of information, as well as how to frame ideas and compelling arguments in your own words, is one of the main functions of K-12 education. These are standards we ought to uphold. Tools that provide shortcuts, like calculators, are not held up as substitutes for learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Tools that help with research, such as large language models (LLMs), should be worked into a student's workflow once the student has already developed an understanding of how to craft good writing and conduct good research. And when we're teaching reading or math to younger kids, the human touch really matters: Teachers should develop relationships with their young students and tailor their approaches. It frustrates me that young children are required to attend public schools (unless you opt out and teach them elsewhere, to the state's satisfaction), only for those schools to deprive them of social interaction and put them in front of screens. Mamdani's no-screens policy for pre-school through second grade seems appropriate to me.

Funny split reaction to this I'm seeing that's SF ppl fretting that kids won't "learn how to use ai" and NYC actual parents thrilled to be getting rid of crummy edtech programs that try to teach 1st graders reading via chatbot https://t.co/0bIXgszihM

— Katie Notopoulos (@katienotopoulos) September 3, 2026

I would imagine many Roundup readers are not New York City parents, or parents of young kids at all. But the coming educational-system transformation should interest us all: How and what we're teaching plays a big role in shaping our society's competencies and pieties. (Just look at the era of wokeness, which arguably started on college campuses and found its way to a boardroom near you in record time.)

For what it's worth, it's possible I'm wrong, or that I have some pedagogical blind spots. We need more detail about how these policies will be rolled out. AI will change our world in ways too numerous too count, and some of those applications will be life- and productivity-enhancing while other applications will be destructive. (And even within the category of "destructive" maybe some things ought to be destroyed; destruction isn't necessarily bad.) One question I keep asking myself, when it comes to reading instruction, is: Were the public schools doing a good job at this in the first place? In many places—New York City included—the answer is a firm no.

I cynically look forward to the future in which AI is deployed in all kinds of school districts, yet teachers there still ask for raises, claiming they're underpaid even as they do less and less. Surely the unions will find a way to spin this.

Scenes from New York: Several days ago, a mentally ill 49-year-old woman, identified as Pamela Cisneros, wielded two knives and stabbed two victims in Times Square. One of the victims was a mother and Bank of America employee, Erin Piacenti, who had just returned to work from maternity leave. Cisneros was shot and killed by cops at the scene, and Piacenti also succumbed to her wounds.

Cisneros had a long history of mental illness, including several encounters with the cops in 2018 and 2019.

Her movement has been one of the most destructive, and is currently being devoured by a combination of suicidal empathy for unlimited Muslim immigration, and the "women cant be held accountable due to their unpredictable mental health" movements.

Unchecked feminism has lead to a white liberal gov who probably would cite the evil of the patriarchy/handmaid's tale, wearing a hijab around muslim men so they dont get too excited and accidentally grope her.

Unchecked feminism has lead to women who are on board with a precedent that basically if your wife's hormones are acting up its actually your duty to take their kids and livelihood away from them, against their will, because they cant be held responsible for their actions due to their uterus.

And unchecked feminism has lead to childless cat ladies who spent their lives shouting their abortions or avoiding kids all together, with no legacy or blood line.

Rest in fucking piss Steinem, you only made the earth worse, and at least your genes wont be passed on

She isn't wrong, but plenty of us do have young children and actively choose not to live in New York City.

If you are raising young children in New York City, I'd suggest getting the fuck out and going somewhere sane. Even if it's just a little saner, that's just a massive improvement.

Whenever there's a discussion of how schools are failing somehow, I'm always reminded of this essay:

    https://www.ishmael.org/daniel-quinn/essays/schooling-the-hidden-agenda/

But the last thing we want our children to be able to do is to live independently of our society. We don’t want our graduates to have a survival value of 100%, because this would make them free to opt out of our carefully constructed economic system and do whatever they please. We don’t want them to do whatever they please, we want them to have exactly two choices (assuming they’re not independently wealthy). Get a job or go to college. Either choice is good for us, because we need a constant supply of entry-level workers and we also need doctors, lawyers, physicists, mathematicians, psychologists, geologists, biologists, school teachers, and so on. The citizen’s education accomplishes this almost without fail. Ninety-nine point nine percent of our high school graduates make one of these two choices.

And it should be noted that our high-school graduates are reliably entry-level workers. We want them to have to grab the lowest rung on the ladder. What sense would it make to give them skills that would make it possible for them to grab the second rung or the third rung? Those are the rungs their older brothers and sisters are reaching for. And if this year’s graduates were reaching for the second or third rungs, who would be doing the work at the bottom? The business people who do the hiring constantly complain that graduates know absolutely nothing, have virtually no useful skills at all. But in truth how could it be otherwise?

So you see that our schools are not failing, they’re just succeeding in ways we prefer not to see. Turning out graduates with no skills, with no survival value, and with no choice but to work or starve are not flaws of the system, they are features of the system. These are the things the system must do to keep things going on as they are.

    1. mtrueman   2 months ago

"The business people who do the hiring constantly complain that graduates know absolutely nothing, have virtually no useful skills at all. But in truth how could it be otherwise?"

If businesses require employees to have certain skills, they can train them themselves at their own expense. Constantly complaining that schools don't train their workers for them, at public expense, no less, is entitlement at its worse.

    From Breitbart News:

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Arena,” former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, former Obama Chief of Staff, and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel talked about antisemitism and said that “if this was any other constituency, the party would deal with this. But everybody seems to be like, oh, this is okay, whatever.”

While discussing Hasan Piker and if he’d go on his show, Emanuel stated, “You have an attorney general in Michigan that cannot show up at their own party, because she’s Jewish and fears for her safety. Even paranoid people have enemies, okay? You have 2% of the population is Jewish, and 75% of all hate crimes are directed at Jews, religious hate crimes. Now, if this was any other constituency, the party would deal with this. But everybody seems to be like, oh, this is okay, whatever.”

At least Luigi had a motive for the retards to get behind. Celebrating a random killing because the victim happened to be employed by a bank seems like another level of ghoulish insanity to me.

      2. BYODB   2 months ago

In no way is her employer of any newsworthiness whatsoever.

The bit about just returning from maternity leave is simply there to create emotional impact since she was a new mother, and if she had taken just a few more days of leave she'd still be alive, but even with that duplicitous bit of emotional heartstring pulling who her specific employer is remains useless information.

The dark side tells me that maybe, just maybe, they mention that she works for BoA because they are 'evil' thus this murder was somehow appropriate and good. After the Luigi Mangione nonsense, I have to at least consider that's the goal.

One of Snowden’s revelations was governments manipulating hit counts for websites and online polls, specifically in the UK IIRC.

Mamdani’s current method is probably more cost effective, at least until Team Blue gets back control of the WH and congress.

So Gov Banning is now a good thing for Libertarians?

    1. Zeb   2 months ago

Well, it seems like a good policy for schools (to me). If you have government run schools, government will decide how they are run. Doesn't seem too different from the "book bans" for dirty books that most here seem to support.

      1. TJJ2000   2 months ago

Indeed. Gov Commie Indoctrination Camps for kids is the root issue.
Politicians banning/dictating classrooms is just a side-effect of that.

I've literally gotten to the place where I can't predict what Reason's take will be on a particular hot button issue.

Was the thing banned because the technology is scary, or was it banned because the Teacher's Union demanded it? Was banned because it was introducing a "market dynamic" into a system or because it was being used to catch Maryland Dads? Is Ron DeSantis or Josh Hawley calling to ban the same thing that Reason editorial guide wants banned?

    Gloria Steinem dies

Who's going to take care of her cats?

  29. Rick James   2 months ago

She famously went undercover as a bunny at one of New York's Playboy Clubs, writing about her experience,

Oh, by the way, it's a matter of time before Steinem is canceled for this article... by ENBs generation. In fact, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

  30. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

"Is it possible that New York City's public schools are actually being changed for the better these days?"

    No. Next question.

What Liz is noticing here is Hizzoner bringing his flock back under disciplinary control after they got a little too big for their britches. Once the teachers' union gets back into line you will see the largesse start to flow again ahead of the next city election cycle.

"I cynically look forward to the future in which AI is deployed in all kinds of school districts, yet teachers there still ask for raises, claiming they're underpaid even as they do less and less."

No doubt AI will have a growing role in assisting all kinds of professional activities. The ideal education system involves one teacher and one student, with the student working on activities tailored and supervised by the teacher who monitors progress and adjusts the program for each student as needed. The current public education model is so far away from that ideal that it will inevitably fail most students as it has been doing for a hundred years.

"The only way for us to get out of this is to grow our way out of it."

Pure horse puckey. Another highly educated idjit outs hisself. Of course the other way for "us" to get out of this is to start spending far less than we take in from revenues.

Cisneros had a long history of mental illness, including several encounters with the cops in 2018 and 2019.

Luckly we live in the age of enlightenment and no longer violate these people's human rights by involuntarily committing them to mental institutions.

The lives, freedoms, and rights of her victims are a small price to pay to for social justice.

"... champion of abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment ..."

Proving yet again that even nominal libertarians can subtly play right into the hands of the misleading narrative of the socialists. Once abortion was legalized women had the right to obtain an abortion. Ensuring that the taxpayers would pay for a woman's abortion if she claimed she couldn't afford to pay for it herself was no longer a right to obtain an abortion; it was an infringement of the constitutional rights of everyone else. Likewise the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have established the entitlement to equality of outcome, no longer the equality of opportunity. Get a clue, guys!

Ousman Ceesay is identified as an African Muslim immigrant. I've still not seen if he was a legal immigrant or not.

The man who shot two people outside a gay club in Tucson this week is a Muslim, immigrated from Africa. Not that you would know it from any of the "What we know about the gunman" in the MSM. Studiously not included in most of such articles...

(Just look at the era of wokeness, which arguably started on college campuses and found its way to a boardroom near you in record time.)

This "record time" was roughly 4 decades. If you weren't aware of it for 3.5 of those 4 decades you should think about why.
