(@NYCMayor/X)

Nabbing the "war criminal": Yesterday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged the federal government to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—whom Mamdani calls a "war criminal"—when he comes to Manhattan for diplomatic purposes in September.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Mamdani has, per a video released yesterday and a New York Times podcast interview that went out this past weekend, spent his precious time exploring whether the New York City Police Department could legally arrest Netanyahu during his expected visit to the city in September. Apparently his lawyers said the city does not have "independent legal authority" to do so—much to his dismay. So now Mamdani is asking the feds to do it.

In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu as well as his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant. They stand accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip following Hamas' massive attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which the terrorist group entered Israel and slaughtered children, music festivalgoers, and families living in kibbutzes, killing roughly 1,200 and taking 251 hostages. Israel has subsequently waged war on Hamas, killing roughly 70,000 Palestinians in the Strip, though actual numbers are somewhat hard to verify at this stage (and the Gazan Ministry of Health is controlled by Hamas).

This ICC arrest warrant is mostly symbolic, not actionable. The ICC has no police force or real ability to make arrests, and the U.S. is not a member nation. "The ICC poses an intolerable threat to U.S. sovereignty—it claims the authority to prosecute and even imprison American servicemen and officials operating on behalf of America's national interest," reads a State Department release from earlier this month. "Americans never signed up for this, and all American presidents since the ICC's ratification have maintained that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over Americans. The ICC previously opened an investigation into U.S. servicemen and intelligence officers and has since refused to close these cases."

"I want to be equally clear: Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large," said Mamdani. "But we cannot end the genocide on our own. We can decide whether our silence will become another weapon."

Setting aside all the precedent-setting problems that would ensue if the New York Police Department arrested Israel's prime minister based on an arrest warrant issued by an organization the U.S. isn't even a part of, I am just not interested in Mamdani's performativeness. As unsexy as it may feel to him, I would rather my mayor figure out how to keep the streets clean, how to streamline permits for new housing, and how to make the subways run on time than waste energy and political will on stunts like this one.

QUICK HITS

  • "On Tuesday, a handful of oil tankers appeared to pause their journeys as they approached Yemeni waters heading into the Red Sea, while other ships laden with Saudi oil u-turned and sailed north towards the Suez Canal, after the Houthi rebel group sent an email to shipowners warning against calling at Saudi Arabia's ports," reports Bloomberg. "Still, other tankers continued to sail toward the area, according to vessel tracking data, and a number of buyers in Asia said earlier in the day they were still hoping to load cargoes there."
  • SEEMS BAD: "OpenAI said on Tuesday that two of its artificial intelligence models went rogue and successfully hacked into Hugging Face, a digital library of A.I. technology that is popular among developers," reports The New York Times.
  • Just an extraordinary headline from The Wall Street Journal: "A Locomotive Named Big Boy Is Making Grown Men Cry"
  • "David Jolly, the Democratic front-runner in the Florida governor's race, on Tuesday reiterated his push to pause data center construction statewide as the facilities' impacts become an increasingly hot-button political issue nationwide," reports Politico. "In a video posted to the social media site X, Jolly said he had proposed a moratorium on data centers and slammed Rep. Byron Donalds, the Trump-endorsed GOP front-runner, for his stance on regulating the industry. The comments also echo similar statements Jolly made in Lakeland last week, when he advocated for a pause and argued Florida lacked the necessary safeguards to protect workers and the environment from data centers." Just to be clear: This is a pro–data center newsletter and ALWAYS WILL BE. (Recent polling from Politico shows just how out of step my priors are with the rest of the American public.)

My local town spent like an entire month fighting over the exact statement that would be made re: palestine, whether they would call it a genocide, how fervently they would denounce it, etc. I remember thinking "jfc how retarded are these people that they wasted so many meetings on this". Glad to see Zohran is doing it on a much bigger scale

It's amazing how retarded they have become. It's no different than some small town sheriff threatening to arrest Obama, but they would have been reported on breathlessly by the MSM as threats to civilization.

Perhaps that explains why 33% of the voting Jews in NYC voted for Mandani. I thought it might be suicidal empathy, but looking at the chart showing income and educational status, I'm surprised at the number of post-graduate people earning so little.

I'm old, so it appears post-grad college degrees are mostly worthless. It used to be if you got a college degree, you've proven you can think, work, read and write. Today it seems they can't think which also means they can't really write either (but they can repeat what has been brainwashed into their head).

A week after liberal media and democrats attack trump regarding election integrity....

Governor of New Jersey admits they were registering illegal voters and 400 likely voted.

    https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/elections/state-motor-vehicle-system-registers-6600-non-citizens-vote-new-jersey

The governor blames the software vendor, but vendor says they just transfer data. The dept of Elections still registers folks, and they ignored self admittance of not being citizens. This doesnt include illegals who dont admit it.

But zero of the 400 were not convicted for illegally voting so qb and NYT can still deny it is a problem.

These numbers are only from an audit of one year of voters.

The same week a judge ruled the feds cant investigate NJ voter rolls... relying on an argument of private data and... no proof illegals were registered.

    https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/federal-judge-dismisses-rnc-voter-roll-grab-in-new-jersey/

    Amazing stuff.

"Orange County woman who registered dog to vote said she did so to "expose flaws" in voting system"
            [...]
"The Orange County woman who faces a series of felonies for registering her dog to vote in 2021 and 2022 made her first court appearance on Tuesday, saying through her legal team that she did so to "expose flaws" in California's voting system.
Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, was charged with five felonies last week as she registered her dog, Maya, to vote in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary election, Orange County District Attorney prosecutors said.
"The dog's vote was successfully counted in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election but was rejected in the 2022 primary," said the DOJ's office in a release.

California doing California things. Voters initiate a constitutional petition, get more than enough votes, supported by 2/3rds of the state in polls. So Bonta modifies the referendum in voting materials.

ESTABLISHES ADDITIONAL VOTER IDENTIFICATION AND CITIZENSHIP VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

New title, as written by Bonta:

PROHIBITS CITIZENS FROM VOTING UNLESS THEY PRESENT GOVERNMENT-ISSUED IDENTIFICATION. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.
    ...
OLD: “This measure would amend the California Constitution to further require that voters present government-issued identification at the polls or the last four digits of a government-issued identification number when voting by mail; the State provide voter identification cards on request; and elections officials annually report percentage of each county’s voters whose citizenship they have verified.”

AND THE VERY SCARY-SOUNDING NEW: “Invalidates mail ballots that do not have last four digits of designated government-issued identification number written on envelope. Prohibits in-person voting without presenting government-issued identification.”

It also reminds me of the pompous and useless inner circle court types under classic European monarchies. A bunch of pompous and useless assholes kissing ass and sucking dick, between intra-group slurs and assassinations, all while telling themselves that their intellectual superiority meant that at least one of them had to rule the peasants.

SEEMS BAD: "OpenAI said on Tuesday that two of its artificial intelligence models went rogue and successfully hacked into Hugging Face, a digital library of A.I. technology that is popular among developers," reports The New York Times.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but while half of America was busy storming the beaches of Normandy, and the other half was storming beaches in Iwo Jima, the other half was building Big Boy, a 600 ton locomotive that is too large to fit in many of Europe's rail tunnels.

I am still looking for start-up funding for the Mamdani Toilet Brush. Imagine the pleasure people could have shoving that fuzzy head into their crusty toilets. But I am still considering the deluxe option that talks, so users could hear some standard Mamdani blather about cool socialism and Jew bashing until he submerges.

Words mean something. Abusing a word takes its power away.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/the-boy-who-cried-genocide/ar-AA28nN7p

There was a time when the word "genocide" stopped a conversation cold. Now, it's a talking point — flung at whatever country the progressive Left wants to tar this week.

We know what that looks like. Six million Jews, industrially murdered. Eight hundred thousand Rwandan Tutsis, hacked to death in a hundred days. The Uyghurs of Xinjiang — mass internment, forced sterilization, children stripped from families — a campaign both the Trump and Biden administrations designated as genocide. The Islamic State group's butchery of the Yazidis.

That word is now being spent like loose change.

Take Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who accused Azerbaijan of "implementing a genocidal campaign" against Armenians — when Baku was reclaiming territory the entire world, including Armenia's own government today, recognizes as Azerbaijani. The death toll of the operation was under 300. Three years later, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a U.S.-brokered peace at the White House. Some genocide.

What is wrong with the world today?

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/men-ask-woman-for-a-cigarette-then-jump-and-beat-her-boyfriend-until-he-dies-after-she-says-she-doesn-t-smoke-police/ar-AA28jXha

A 60-year-old Nevada man tried to shield his girlfriend from two individuals who were "insulting and talking badly" to her after she didn't have a cigarette to give them, cops say. The pair allegedly jumped the man and beat him until he died.

Scott Dennis was in line at a Las Vegas food bank when Shiloh Leutu, 38, and another suspect asked Dennis' girlfriend for a cigarette, according to an arrest report obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and local NBC affiliate KSNV.

The woman told them she didn't smoke, so Leutu and the man with him allegedly began accosting and ridiculing her for it. Dennis had stepped out of line to smoke, saw what was going on, then returned to shield his girlfriend from Leutu and the other man, according to police.

Using witness statements and surveillance video, cops determined that Leutu and the other man attacked and fatally beat Dennis outside the food bank. Cops say Leutu and the other man kept hitting and kicking him as he tried to get up off the ground.

What a culture they bring to the Western world!

    https://rmx.news/article/iraqi-suspected-of-pushing-16-year-old-liana-k-in-front-of-freight-train-in-germany-claimed-to-be-gay-on-rejected-asylum-application-before-sexually-assaulting-a-female/

Iraqi suspected of pushing 16-year-old Liana K. in front of freight train in Germany claimed to be gay on rejected asylum application, before sexually assaulting a female

Muhammed A., 31, first entered the European Union illegally through Lithuania on Aug. 25, 2021. He claimed to be homosexual and insisted he would face the death penalty in Iraq — a common method used by migrants from Middle Eastern countries to stay in Europe and thwart any deportation proceedings, irrespective of whether an asylum request is granted or not. His asylum request was rejected twice.

The Federal Office for Migration in Germany submitted a Dublin application to send him back to Lithuania in October 2022, but multiple legal challenges delayed his return. He alleged he had been raped at an asylum center in Kybartai, Lithuania, and warned of “significant risk of retraumatization” if deported. No evidence of this event, including any formal accusations at the time or charges, has been reported.

In November 2024, Muhammed A. was convicted of an exhibitionistic act after approaching a woman, putting his arm around her, unzipping his pants, and exposing himself. This incident contradicts the homosexuality claims. He was fined 40 daily rates of €15 each. Because the fine fell below 90 daily rates, it did not trigger a criminal record that might have further influenced his immigration status.

Authorities say he repeatedly stalled deportation proceedings. By March of this year, an enforceable deportation order to Lithuania was in place. While serving a 20-day substitute prison sentence in Hannover for failing to pay a fine, immigration authorities applied for deportation detention. However, Hannover District Court rejected it, ruling the risk of absconding was not sufficiently justified.

On Aug. 11, police say he pushed Liana K. with full force against a passing freight train while she was on the phone with her grandfather. Investigators found his DNA on her shoulder. He has since been placed in a psychiatric hospital, claiming to have schizophrenia, sparking concerns that his lawyers may claim he cannot be deemed criminally responsible for his actions.

    JewFrees movie theater?

The manager of a movie theater in suburban Portland, Oregon, is defending a cryptic marquee message about Jews and “The Odyssey” by saying modern-day antisemitism is “exaggerated” to help Israel.

“Before there were the Jews, there was … ‘The Odyssey,’” said the marquee at the Lake Theater and Cafe in Lake Oswego.

“Through the media I consume, I believe modern-day antisemitism is exaggerated, mostly as a defense for Israel’s actions in the Middle East and its involvement in our politics,” Perry told the Tribune. “My intention in referencing Jewish people on the marquee was to prod at everything being seemingly antisemitic with a statement that couldn’t possibly be construed as antisemitic.”
