President Donald Trump | Andrew Thomas - CNP/CNP / Polaris/Newscom
(Andrew Thomas - CNP/CNP / Polaris/Newscom)

Two weeks to stop the war? After warning earlier this week that a "whole civilization will die" without a deal, President Donald Trump agreed last night to a two-week ceasefire with Iran. Israel also signed into the deal, although the country said it did not cover its conflict with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

The deal is predicated on what Trump said was "the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz." CNN reports that Iran made a commitment to reopen the strait, a key waterway for global energy markets, with Iran's military overseeing passage through the strait. Some reports have raised the possibility that Iran might charge a toll for passage through the strait.

This morning, I asked President Trump if he's okay with the Iranians charging a toll for all ships that go through the Strait of Hormuz, he told me there may be a Joint US-Iran venture to charge tolls:

"We're thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It's a way of securing it —…

At a press conference this morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States had won a "decisive military victory" in Iran, destroying its missile capabilities.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

The announcement settled global markets, which had pushed the price of oil up to near $150. Oil prices dropped considerably after the deal was announced, and stock futures rose. Peace is good for prosperity.

The U.S. says it has stopped its bombing campaign due to the ceasefire, but some reports indicate that Iranian attacks were still underway overnight, possibly because word of the deal had not yet spread to local commanders. A fresh round of talks between the U.S. and Iran is set to begin later this week. U.S. military officials have warned that if the talks are not successful, bombing could restart.

Doing the robot. Does AI lead to universal basic income? This week, OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT large language model, released a big-picture policy document: Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age.

The document explicitly name-checks the Progressive Era and the New Deal, declaring that after "the Industrial Age, the Progressive Era and the New Deal helped modernize the social contract for a world reshaped by electricity, the combustion engine, and mass production."

Most companies use this sort of blue-sky policy sheet to talk up the benefits they provide. But while OpenAI does nod to some potentially large benefits of its product, much of the document is devoted to proposing policies that would solve problems the company believes might be caused by AI.

For example, the introduction includes the following sentence: "While we strongly believe that AI's benefits will far outweigh its challenges, we are clear-eyed about the risks—of jobs and entire industries being disrupted; bad actors misusing the technology; misaligned systems evading human control; governments or institutions deploying AI in ways that undermine democratic values; and power and wealth becoming more concentrated instead of more widely shared."

One of the proposals is the creation of a "Public Wealth Fund" that would provide "every citizen—including those not invested in financial markets—with a stake in AI-driven economic growth." The details aren't entirely clear, and there are a lot of ways to interpret the proposal. It might mean something like Alaska's permanent fund, which pays residents an annual dividend from oil revenues. As Politico's Digital Future Daily newsletter notes, it also sounds an awful lot like universal basic income (UBI), a sort of welfare-for-everyone policy backed by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, among others.

I have become much more skeptical about UBI over the years, partly because such policies would be very, very expensive if implemented widely, and partly because small-scale experiments with targeted cash interventions for the needy consistently deliver underwhelming results.

One of the best recent surveys of cash-payment programs was Kelsey Piper's August 2025 essay in The Argument, the title of which doubles as the conclusion: "Giving people money helped less than I thought it would." I doubt that AI will suddenly make UBI affordable and effective. I do suspect, however, that AI companies will hype their products in ways intended to squeeze subsidies and tax favoritism out of policymakers.

Hack Heaven. Meanwhile, OpenAI's primary competitor, Anthropic, announced yesterday that the general public would not have access to the company's frontier model, Claude Mythos Preview, because it's such a powerful tool for exploiting security vulnerabilities in software. The company claims that during internal testing, the model found security lapses in nearly every major piece of software.

So instead of letting the public play with it, the company is giving access to a 40-company consortium, dubbed Project Glasswing, to let pros identify and fix security issues in advance.

"The goal is both to raise awareness and to give good actors a head start on the process of securing open-source and private infrastructure and code," an Anthropic employee told The New York Times.

As a former teenage reader of the hacker zine 2600, which was occasionally—and mostly pointlessly—vilified for showing readers how to hack vulnerable systems, I'm never quite sure how seriously to take these extraordinary claims.

But given the rapid trajectory of model evolution and the warnings from AI security researchers who have said that something like this day would come, I suspect Anthropic's new model is quite powerful and will pose some novel IT security challenges.

It also indicates that the spat between the Department of Defense and Anthropic earlier this year was extremely misguided. That resulted in the Pentagon designating Anthropic a supply chain risk, which restricts the use of the company's products for national security. (A judge recently blocked the designation.) This is a company that now claims to have something like an AI-powered exploit for nearly every critical system on the planet—and it was essentially prohibited from military use because of a spat with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Beyond the policy implications, there are aspects to the story that suggest that things might be about to get really, really weird.

As Kevin Roose, the Times journalist behind the Anthropic story, posted yesterday on X, the new model appears to possess some capabilities that are right out of a William Gibson novel.

As always, the best stuff is in the system card.

During testing, Claude Mythos Preview broke out of a sandbox environment, built "a moderately sophisticated multi-step exploit" to gain internet access, and emailed a researcher while they were eating a sandwich in the park. pic.twitter.com/klJX0bivnL

I'm almost surprised they didn't call this model Wintermute.

Scenes from Washington, D.C. As a 2024 Reason documentary by Justin Zuckerman showed, D.C.'s tipped wage initiative has been a disaster for restaurants and restaurant workers. So of course Maryland politicians want to emulate it.

QUICK HITS

  • Speaking of hacker archetypes from the '90s: The New York Times has a long investigative piece on the identity of bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, whose real identity has long been obscured. The story points to British computer scientist Adam Back, who was a member of the Cypherpunks, the loose online collective where the ideas, philosophy, and technology that led to bitcoin first came together. One of the notable elements of the NYT story is that Back, like Satoshi, explicitly considered himself a "libertarian," which in his words meant favoring a "less powerful government, less taxes, less onerous laws, more freedoms."
  • Continuing with our tech theme, and tying it back to Iran: The CIA can detect a human heartbeat with AI and magnet sensors:

SCOOP: CIA used secret tool called 'Ghost Murmur' to find airman in Iran, sources tell me

Ghost Murmur pairs long-range quantum magnetometry sensors with AI to find human heartbeatshttps://t.co/VS4oQbKsTn

  • Iranian hackers appear to be targeting U.S. utility infrastructure.
  • California's long-delayed, wildly overbudget high-speed rail project is the Duke Nukem Forever of public works projects.

It's amazing how leftists can go from calling Trump an insane warmonger to TACO without skipping a beat. Unless you realize that leftists are inherently dishonest, then you're not amazed.

How many of our leftists here will follow that script today?

          Classic double blind argumentation.

If trump does something, fascist. If he doesnt do what they claim, TACO.

          Meanwhile they intentionally ignore reality.

Iran has a 3 legged power structure. Religious leadership. Military. Political leadership.

Military and religious owned the third leg through citing who could run for office. They controlled it.

Trump and Israel start a campaign of taking out the military and religious legs by taking out the leadership. Then start working with the political leg, the security council, with Pakistan.

This is to help promote a transition from religious Military control to political control. This is what majority of Iranians want.

Anyone who has even a smidgen of knowledge can see and recognize that. This excludes reason and other leftists like qb.

The tolls were allowing Iran to attack Israel like they did on Oct 7. Allowing them to launch missiles at civilians from Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank, and Yemen almost daily for the last 30+ years. The toll was allowing them to build nuclear bombs unmolested. For allowing them the occasional dircted bombing of Saudi oil infrastructure. For allowing them to fight a proxy war with Saudi Arabia via Yemen.

The message was always clear, allow us to export terror, or we will close the straight.

Why should I pay for the protection of Israel, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and Yemen? We're on the verge of economic collapse here. We can't afford this. We have unfixed problems here. I wish them well, but they need to defend themselves...you know...like Europe.

“Both the Iranian negotiators said to us directly with, you know, no shame, that they controlled 460 kilograms of 60% [enriched uranium],” Steve Witkoff told Fox News host Sean Hannity, “and they’re aware that that could make 11 nuclear bombs, and that was the beginning of their negotiating stance.”

And if anyone of them didn't think Iran was working on nukes or long range missiles they were wrong.

Whether I weaseled out or not, it is clear we both now agree Trump hasn't accepted those terms. That is not a case I'm making. So can we just have the discussion within that framework?

Yes. Buried below ground that couldn't be dug up without us knowing.

What purpose is there for that level of enrichment beside going higher for a bomb?

Negotiation leverage. I in return ask you, why stop at 60%? From my reading, progressing to weapons grade from there is relatively easy.

Do you believe the range of their missles is what they say?

I don't know what they say. I don't expect the truth from any nation on their capabilities. I think they can reach Europe, but not the US based on what others say.

Do you know their religion tells them to lie to the non believers and they are an Islamic theocracy?

No on the first, yes on the second. But whether or not their religion tells them to lie is not relevant to me because I assume all governments lie in war and negotiations. If we're going to disparage liars, we can start closer than Iran.

It wasn't just Iran saying they weren't pursuing a nuclear weapon, it was also our own intelligence. A couple weeks before the "12-day war" DNI Tulsi Gabbard testified before Congress that Iran had not even made the political decision to try to acquire nukes, and even if they changed course and did in the future, it would take years for them to acquire one. The big thing, though, was that all of the US intel was pointing to Iran having not decided to seek a nuke.

You dont get liberal narrative creation.

Sure thebUS destroyed the Iranian navy, air force, and dropped launches by 90%

The US still lost and Iran won. You can tell by trumps nuclear threats and then backing down. And trump gave Iran everything on the cease fire. No, not pallets of cash (boss move), but by letting a Nigerian scam site know the US is now allowing Iran to do whatever it wants.

I'm not sure what the alternative is, when most humans don't add a lot of cognitive value. And most things don't need "repair." You'll have some very expensive skilled labor, and then everything else will be DIY.

When everyone is on UBI, things like shoplifting become a nonissue. You just bill people for whatever they walk out with. So cashiers, and "greeters" become obsolete. If you aren't physically putting goods on a truck or a shelf, what good are you?

And I think the comparison to UBI experiments of $500/month misses the point. This will be a complete replacement of income, not a marginal supplement.

And again you miss my point about the "workable." I don't think Trump will accept those terms. And I don't think Iran will accept our terms. I think the war will continue, hot or cold.

QB, unfortunately, I think you're right. I hope this cease fire holds and the war really ends, but I don't see that happening. And even if Trump is willing to concede many of Iran's demands to maintain the cease fire, I also suspect Israel will do something to end the ceasefire. Netanyahu and the Likud Party see Iran as an existential threat to them (now that they've directly attacked Iran repeatedly, they're probably right). I think they'll try to spark the fighting back up so that the US goes in and does complete regime change and occupation. I don't know if Trump would fall for that, I hope he won't, but who knows.

I hope this really is the end of the war and Iran cowers in the corner, but I just don't see that as reality.

I love the smell of nerds being wrong on the internet in the morning:

The Heartbeat Sensor is a gadget featured in several installments in the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Franchise.
      ...
In reality, this technology (detecting the ultra low frequency electromagnetic field given of the human heart) is theoretically impossible to develop for two reasons:
      1. The receiving antenna on the device would have to have a size of the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the ULF emitted by the heart (thousands km). Any practical antenna would have extremely low sensitivity and not detect anything due to thermal noise and other factors
      2. Unless the antenna would be tens of thousand km wide, there would be absolutely no possibility of detecting the direction of arrival of the signal (Abbe diffraction limit law). for the same reason the heart of the person carrying the device would always show up in the system, and the device would not be able to tell the direction of the signal.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/4-texas-teens-allegedly-kidnapped-tortured-classmate-for-talking-to-one-of-their-girlfriends/ar-AA20myRo

Four 17-year-old Texas students allegedly kidnapped and tortured their classmate at gunpoint because he was talking to one of their girlfriends, according to police.

The accused Austin teens — Jose Rojas-Alvarado, Oscar Armando Santiago-Martinez, Angel Lemus-Perez, and Carlos Roberto Oliva-Villeda — allegedly tied up, burned and beat the victim with a baseball bat while taking it in turns holding a gun to his head, according to shocking court documents obtained by KVUE.

The teens then bound the victim’s hands, feet and mouth with duct tape and took turns holding a gun to his head as they viciously beat him with aluminum baseball bats, a walking cane and a belt, according to the affidavit.

Lemus-Perez allegedly torched up a box cutter with a lighter and held it against the victim’s chest. Rojas-Alvarado forced him to drink from a bottle of clear alcohol and threatened to cut his toe off if he refused, the affidavit alleged.

At one point, Rojas-Alvarado grabbed a chainsaw and machete and threatened to cut off the tortured teen’s body parts, according to the accuser — who said a plastic bag was also put over his head.

Towards the end, Rojas-Alvarado told the alleged victim that they tortured him because he’d been talking to his girlfriend and he wanted him to stop.

The accuser said he was eventually cut loose and dumped at a separate location after the attackers deleted their numbers from his cell phone, according to the affidavit. He eventually made his way to a bus stop and reported the alleged attack to police.

Gotta come correct with at least an 8 or 9 out of 10 like Jackie Coakley or Jussie Smollett before it gets picked up and reinforced by the MSM. Emily Heather Phillips, 33, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was arrested Sunday and charged with four misdemeanors, including disorderly conduct, interrupting a religious observance, knowingly participating in a noisy assembly, and continuing to disturb the peace.

She did not stay in jail long.

During her arraignment Monday at 9 a.m., Ramsey County District Court Judge Maria Mitchell, who was appointed in 2022 by Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, threw out the charges, saying there was "no probable cause.”

Trisha Pohland, the attorney for Phillips, said her client had a First Amendment right to ruin a Christian holy day.

“Law enforcement is really cracking down on First Amendment rights,” she said, according to the Saint Paul Pioneer Press.

“It’s very important that individuals have the right to protest without the fear of going to jail," she added.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/kansas-governor-vetoes-bill-revoking-in-state-tuition-for-undocumented-students/ar-AA20mMr6

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly has vetoed a bill that would revoke in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants who earned a high school diploma in the Sunflower State.

“This bill targets Kansans who were brought to the United States as children. To punish these kids for decisions their parents made years ago is not only cruel, but also not in the best interest of the state,” Kelly continued. “Kansas needs these young people to be educated and trained so they can enter our workforce and contribute to our state’s economy.”

The bill passed the House 78-46 and narrowly cleared the Senate 22-18 in March over the objection of Democrats and a minority of vocal Republicans.

On Monday, a Bakersfield resident confessed to funneling more than $5 million to contacts in China and Africa.

From December 2020 to August 2023, Ugwu ran Franklin Finance Inc., opening and managing nearly 20 bank accounts across nine banks and financial institutions.

There's no way to save England at this point. Coming soon to USA.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/afghan-who-attacked-girl-14-with-wine-bottle-can-stay-in-britain/ar-AA20l4B5

An Afghan migrant who attacked a woman and her 14-year-old daughter with a wine bottle has been allowed to remain in the UK.

The refugee, known only as AR, committed a number of serious offences, including threatening to kill his flatmate soon after he had arrived in Britain.

The Home Office sought to remove his refugee status because of the “serious harm” his offences had caused, but its case was dismissed by an immigration tribunal.

As AR’s crimes were linked to his mental health, which has now improved, an immigration judge found that the Home Office’s case was “hopeless” and allowed him to maintain his refugee status.

AR was born in Afghanistan in 1973 and is still a citizen there. He entered the UK in 1999, immediately claiming asylum, saying he had faced persecution from the Taliban.

Less than a year later, in 2000, he was arrested for threatening to kill his flatmate, for which he pleaded guilty to affray and was kept in a mental health facility. In 2001 he was granted indefinite leave to remain in Britain.

In 2003, AR assaulted the doorman at a pub and was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). He assaulted a neighbour in 2007, setting fire to his garden, for which he was convicted of common assault and destruction of property.

The refugee was sentenced to a two-year community rehabilitation order and a compensation order for the ABH. He was also given a conditional discharge of 12 months for the dispute with his neighbour.

    Committed ‘horrific’ crime
In 2007, AR committed a “horrific” crime when he was out shopping for alcohol. He entered a wine store where he had shopped before and knew the shopkeeper and his family.

After buying a bottle of wine, he started making comments about God and religion, and the wife of the proprietor asked him to leave.

“He responded by hitting her and her 14-year-old daughter with the bottle repeatedly and making violent threats against all of the members of the family,” the court was told.

“He then ran out of the shop and into another shop, where he slapped the owner in the face. The police were called and he was arrested.”

    ICE doing their job...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ice-arrests-sicko-illegal-migrant-accused-of-kidnapping-4-year-old-girl-from-long-island-laundromat/ar-AA20hVIo

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has rearrested an illegal immigrant accused of kidnapping a 4-year-old girl from a Long Island laundromat last month after a local judge released the alleged creep back into the community.

Carlos Corte-Corte, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 31 and placed in removal proceedings, DHS revealed Monday.

Corte-Corte, 38, allegedly led the young girl out the back of the Laundry Kingdom in Patchogue on March 28 while her unsuspecting mother was there, according to Suffolk County Police, who later found the tot at a nearby library.

Suffolk cops quickly arrested him on charges of second-degree kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child and for an outstanding warrant. A local judge freed him the following day on supervised release.

DHS, in a statement, fumed that after Corte-Corte’s initial arrest, “sanctuary politicians released him from jail back into the community.”

Corte-Corte illegally entered the country on at least three occasions in 2020, according to DHS, and was removed each time.

He illegally re-entered the US a fourth time at an unknown place and time before the alleged kidnapping attempt.

“This three-time deported criminal illegal alien, Carlos Corte-Corte, kidnapped an innocent four-year-old girl from a laundromat on Long Island. New York sanctuary politicians chose to release this kidnapper from jail to prey on more innocent children rather than cooperate with ICE law enforcement,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis told The Post.

We can use these two weeks to get Trump out of office. Threatening genocide goes against everything the modern US stands for.

What's your plan for removing him? Might be one of those "don't throw me in the briar patch" moments where successor, J.D. Vance, is more likely to help GOP do much better in mid-terms and 2028.

"...One of the notable elements of the NYT story is that Back, like Satoshi, explicitly considered himself a "libertarian," which in his words meant favoring a "less powerful government, less taxes, less onerous laws, more freedoms."..."

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a magazine/website with such views instead of one written by left-wing TDS-addled steaming piles of lefty shit?

Illegals do the bludgeoning that Americans don't want...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/haitian-illegal-immigrant-bludgeons-mother-of-two-to-death-with-hammer-outside-florida-gas-station-in-broad-daylight/ar-AA20q014

A Haitian illegal immigrant released into the US by the Biden administration’s lax immigration policies allegedly bludgeoned a Florida mother at a gas station in a brazen daylight attack.

Rolbert Jaochin, 40, is accused of striking the 51-year-old woman multiple times, leaving her to die in the parking lot outside a Chevron gas station in Fort Myers around 7:20 a.m. Friday, according to court records viewed by The Post.

The woman was found by first responders outside the convenience store, not breathing, lying in a pool of blood around her head, according to the documents.

JewFree running for office in Michigan? Or the UK and European model coming to America?

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/how-big-of-a-tent-do-democrats-want-hasan-piker-is-testing-the-limits-in-michigan-s-senate-primary/ar-AA20m25Q

Some have pitched him as a gateway to young people — particularly young men — who have drifted to the right in recent years. Others fear he is a sign of the party beholden to its extremes, pointing to inflammatory rhetoric like “Hamas is a thousand times better” than Israel, describing some Orthodox Jews as “inbred” and that “America deserved 9/11."
Piker's appearances with Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan, have catalyzed questions of how big a tent the party wants to build as it works to regain power in the midterm elections and win back the White House.

The packed, raucous events on state university campuses offered a clear signal from at least one faction of Democrats that there's a growing appetite for figures like Piker and the candidates who stand with them.

"Belief itself is an act of hope,” El-Sayed told the crowd.

“Because we may not win, but for damn sure if we don't try, we will lose,” he added. “And look, winning is right there. We live at the golden edge of a horizon of our own making.”

Conspiracy theory unfolding as 9th scientist dies...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/mystery-surrounds-death-of-ninth-scientist-tied-to-us-secrets-as-disturbing-pattern-grows/ar-AA20mJil

While there have been no public allegations of foul play, Hicks' case marks the ninth person with ties to America's space or nuclear secrets who has died or mysteriously vanished in recent years, which has set off alarm bells among US national security experts.

Moreover, three of these scientists had close ties to Hicks, as all of them worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab or participated in NASA missions there. Monica Reza, JPL's new Director of the Materials Processing Group, vanished without a trace in June 2025, just months after beginning her tenure at the NASA lab.
