Noem Out at DHS

Plus: Markwayne Mullin tapped, people will die, Lone Star beer comes to D.C., and more...

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem | Carol Guzy/Zuma Press/Newscom
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem (Carol Guzy/Zuma Press/Newscom)

Faith Noem more. It was never quite clear what, exactly, Kristi Noem brought to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) when President Donald Trump appointed her.

She was a self-promoter with a penchant for obvious lies. Under her watch, immigration enforcement agents killed two Americans in Minnesota, prompting a massive backlash. Noem not only lied about the victims, she also lied about her lies during congressional testimony. Noem-a gusta!

Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, had few if any relevant credentials before being appointed to run the DHS—unless you count bragging about shooting her dog, which, admittedly, was the same energy she brought to the federal security apparatus. How was this supposed to work? What was her appointment supposed to accomplish? It never really made much sense.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Trump's thinking appeared to be something along the lines of:

  • Step 1: Tap Noem to run the DHS.
  • Step 2: ????
  • Step 3: Immigration policy solved.

Call it the underpants Noem theory of immigration enforcement.

Trump gave Noem the boot yesterday. This followed congressional testimony in which she said, under oath, that Trump approved a $220 million DHS marketing blitz featuring Noem. Trump was reportedly angered by Noem's statement, and he has since said this isn't true. If so, that would be perjury on Noem's part. In her defense, Noem has been saying this for at least a year.

Noem was let go with a few nice remarks from President Trump and an appointment to a new gig, special envoy for the Shield of Americas. What, exactly, is the Shield of Americas? No one can say for sure. I can't prove that it's a fake, made-up, face-saving appointment. But it sure looks like a fake, made-up, face-saving appointment. Apparently, there's a Shield "summit" at a Trump golf club this weekend.

Noem also sparked controversy by flying in a taxpayer-funded sex plane. I'm sorry—the copy desk insists I refer to it as an alleged adultery airplane. We do not officially know if there was any sex. It's all alleged! But Noem has long been rumored to be having an affair with her deputy, Corey Lewandowski. And when questioned about their relationship, she has not flatly denied it.

Affair or no, Americans paid for it. As Eric Boem recently wrote, the pair flew on a private jet with a private cabin in the rear, costing taxpayers $70 million. Possibly, they were just playing a miles-high game of Catan. (Lewandowski is expected to leave the DHS with Noem.)

Even ignoring the more salacious allegations, and the Rolex she wore to a brutal foreign prison, there is simply nothing positive to say about Noem's tenure at the DHS.

As Billy Binion wrote in a rage-inducing (but correct) social media thread yesterday, Noem smeared Americans killed by their own government as "domestic terrorists," threatened to have people jailed for filming law enforcement, and lied over and over and over again to the public. Her department also lied repeatedly to the courts about immigration enforcement.

If there is an upside to her time atop Homeland Security, it's that her misrule brought attention to the rotten nature of the DHS, an agency created in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that never should have existed.

Interestingly, Trump himself seems to be kinda-sorta backing off the harshest, Stephen Miller-style immigration rhetoric, although who knows how long that will last.

TRUMP: "You gotta lighten up on this, they might have come into our country illegally but they're good people and they're cheap workers. They're working now on farms, in luncheonettes and hotels. We're just focused on getting the murderers out."

So much for mass deportations. pic.twitter.com/SeDUSn5F36

— Stew Peters (@realstewpeters) March 5, 2026

It's good that Noem is gone. If only the DHS were abolished too.

Mullin his options. Sadly, although Trump ousted Noem, he immediately replaced her with a new nominee: Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R–Okla.).

Mullin has been an aggressive public supporter of Trump, pushing back against reporters who ask critical questions. Trump reportedly enjoys watching Mullin on TV, which is how you get top jobs in the Trump administration.

I can't imagine, however, that he enjoyed this particular moment, in which Mullin described America's bombardment of Iran as a war—and then immediately insisted that it was not, in fact, a war:

Mullin: This is war

*moments later*

Raju: You concede this is war?

Mullin: We haven't declared war.

Reporter: You just said it's a war.

Raju: You're not conceding it's a war?

Mullin: We haven't declared war. pic.twitter.com/ujIBd3yRIx

— Acyn (@Acyn) March 3, 2026

Trump, for his part, has called the Iran attacks a war on multiple occasions, including yesterday, when asked about the possibility of domestic terror attacks—the sort of domestic attacks that Mullin, atop the DHS, is now nominally in charge of preventing.

Might the lives of Americans be at risk because of this dubiously justified war of choice? Trump responded with what amounted to a rhetorical shrug emoticon.

"I guess," Trump said. "Like I said, some people will die. When you go to war, some people will die." Hear me out, but…maybe that's a reason to not go to war?

Iranian leadership problems. One of the people who has already died in this war is longtime Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei presided over a brutal authoritarian regime for nearly 50 years, and in the days since his death, it has not been clear who, exactly, is going to replace him—partly because many of the plausible replacements have also been bombed.

Now, Trump is saying he wants input on the next leader. It very much seems like the president is trying to replicate the strategy he ran in Venezuela, but on a much larger, much more deadly scale.

Trump's desire for leadership input raises a question: If it's a war that involves bombing the existing regime into oblivion and letting the American president have a say in who comes next, can we officially call it a regime change war?

Scenes from Washington, D.C.: Lone Star, the "National Beer of Texas," is now available in the District of Columbia, because beer is a flat circle.

QUICK HITS

  • A Venezuelan state-owned mining company finalized a deal to sell millions in gold to the United States.
  • Republicans who are skeptical of foreign intervention are not happy with Trump.
  • An expansive, expensive war might not be great for the economy.
  • Is Tucker Carlson's new merch drop a sign he's going to run for president?
  • There was apparently a sold-out meet-up of OpenClaw users in New York this week. OpenClaw is an AI agent platform that allows AI agents to take over just about every aspect of your digital life, including email, finances, and other sorts of personal information. It's amazing and terrifying and weird and probably the future. According to one report, everyone at the meetup of enthusiast power-users thought their systems weren't entirely secure. AI agents built presentations in real-time, and, according to the report, the heavily male room "had 2021 crypto energy."
  • Some people are saying XBox as we know it is dead. Maybe. Definitely, definitely…maybe. But the next-generation console, which will play P.C. games, looks pretty nifty. Does this mean I'll finally be able to play Fallout: London as a console gamer?

      FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia

      https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/murder-in-a-sanctuary-county/ar-AA1XErJe

This murder is on Steve Descano.

There can be no doubt that Stephanie Minter is dead because of the indefensible actions of the Fairfax County “progressive prosecutor.”

Abdul Jalloh, an immigrant from Sierra Leone in the United States illegally since age 9, was arrested on charges of at least 40 crimes over the years, including stabbings. Descano’s office dropped the serious charges almost every time. Police begged the prosecutor to lock him up, warning that he would do worse. Descano didn’t listen, and Jalloh stabbed Minter to death at a bus stop last month.

      https://newswebdaily.com/police-warned-prosecutors-3-times-about-violent-illegal-immigrant-before-he-allegedly-killed-virginia-mother

Newly uncovered emails show the Fairfax County Police Department warned the county’s commonwealth attorney about a criminal illegal migrant with more than 30 previous arrests at least three times before he allegedly stabbed a mother to death in the Washington, D.C., area.

Abdul Jalloh, 32, was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing 41-year-old Stephanie Minter to death at a bus stop in Fairfax County, Virginia, in late February.

Jalloh, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone in West Africa who had lived in Virginia since the age of 9, was arrested at a liquor store one day after the stabbing when an employee called 911 to report Jalloh was shoplifting.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Jalloh entered the country in 2012 and has more than a dozen arrests in northern Virginia.

His criminal history includes more than 30 arrests for charges of rape, malicious wounding, assault, drug possession, identity theft, trespassing, larceny, firing a weapon, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and pick-pocketing, yet his charges were dropped by local prosecutors almost every time, according to DHS.

It was nearly 300% pay raise but it was the first pay raise since 1988. It raised legislature salaries from about $18k to about $50k.

Bad optics maybe, but this one is digging hard to create a bad framing. It's probably the least offensive thing Virginia Democrats will do all year.

    Poor damonsullum.

A three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to vacate the district court’s preliminary injunction and dismiss the appeal, saying the lower court had "granted an overbroad, constitutionally suspect injunction."
    ...
The 7th Circuit also ordered "vacatur," effectively nullifying Ellis’ prior injunction.

The judges said vacatur is the "best way to wipe the slate clean" and is "proper to ensure the district court’s injunction order does not affect future litigation."

A petition to require voter ID and allow only U.S. citizens to vote has gained momentum in California and surpassed the required 875,000-signature threshold to qualify for the November ballot, the group leading the effort said.

According to Reform California, a nonpartisan political activism group, organizers submitted the "California Voter ID Initiative" petition to county authorities with 1.3 million signatures. The group says the petition has garnered bipartisan support, with signatures from Californians representing all walks of life and political persuasions across all 58 of the state’s counties.

Reform California believes the measure has a solid path to passage in November, citing polls showing 71% of Californians favor the initiative. If passed, the measure would bypass the Democratic legislative supermajority and amend the state constitution to require voter ID when casting a ballot, require election officials to verify the citizenship of registered voters and require the state to maintain accurate voter rolls.

      https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/left-wing-plot-to-destroy-california-voter-id-petition-with-over-1-million-backers/ar-AA1XsBGf

A coalition of left-wing organizations has launched a bid to crush an attempt to enforce voter ID in California — despite the petition heading for a ballot after getting 1.3 million signatures.

The group, which includes the American Civil Liberties Union and the League of Women Voters of California, has formed a campaign to oppose the measure.

The coalition warns this could create long lines, prevent eligible voters from casting ballots, and disproportionately affect those without IDs, particularly amid name changes, frequent moves and housing instability.

Other organizations in the coalition, such as California Common Cause, Asian Law Caucus, California Donor Table and Disability Rights California, are urging others to join the effort.

Brittany Stonesifer, senior voting rights and redistricting program manager for California Common Cause, added: “This measure wouldn’t just hurt voters who are already underrepresented — it would make voting harder for the vast majority of Californians who cast their ballots by mail.

Congressman Seth Moulton’s illegal immigrant guest during the State of the Union address is referenced in police reports involving sexual assault and juveniles, police say.

The Herald submitted a public records request to the Secretary of State’s Office and the Milford Police Department regarding two reports, one from June and the other from September of 2021, where Marcelo Gomes da Silva was apparently named as the person of interest.

The Herald sought the police report numbered 21-23101 dated 9/15/2021 featuring Marcelo Gomes da Silva and 21-16254 dated 6/30/21 also featuring the 19-year-old.

Well, I think that it's rather humorous that her specific claim of 'cheating' is that the State of Texas Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling that would have allowed the polling places in her home district to stay open longer than they were allowed to anywhere else. To me, that sounds more like they prevented cheating than facilitated it. Apparently, she was banking on those late votes breaking her way by some significant amount.

Furthermore, if the Republicans had rigged the Democrat primary, she almost certainly would have won.

The legislature will doubtless consider whether, by authorizing measures of offense also, they will place our force on an equal footing with that of its adversaries. I communicate all material information on this subject, that in the exercise of this important function confided by the Constitution to the legislature exclusively their judgment may form itself on a knowledge and consideration of every circumstances of weight.

"In every system of morality, which I have hitherto met with, I have always remarked, that the author proceeds for some time in the ordinary way of reasoning, and establishes the being of a God, or makes observations concerning human affairs; when of a sudden I am surprised to find, that instead of the usual copulations of propositions, is, and is not, I meet with no proposition that is not connected with an ought, or an ought not. This change is imperceptible; but is, however, of the last consequence.
      ...
Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them." - David Hume

Let's say, for a minute (or 50-some yrs.), that Congress apportioned a budget to defense, foreign aid, or both. Let's even go so far as to say they even set aside a budget to keep a large group of well-equipped volunteers for such a purpose. Then let's suppose the POTUS, duly elected and even overwhelmingly popular among this group of volunteers, came up with an idea to defend some interest and tossed it to this group of well-trained volunteers and they went off and did it. Was this done without Congress' approval? Does Congress' approval supersede the volunteers' actions?

You're arguing living vs. dead letter in a room full of people half of whom, the half who are on your side, hold "Borders are just abstract social constructs." as core philosophy.

You, and they, don't want the letter of the law, you want your pony and, SSDD, the pony is a lie. So, the question is, "How many Alex Pretti, Israeli music festivals, and 9/11 deaths will you trade for living Ayatollahs?"

OK, now tell me "Congress shall make no law..." and "shall not be infringed..."

Yup they get disregarded too. I'm against that as well. And argue that when Congress or the Presidency violate them. Just as I'll argue it now when Congress hasn't authorized war with Iran.

Iran didn't attack America on 911 that was a bunch of Saudi wabbasist(sic). And Nova concert is an attack on Israel, so again not germaine to America. And I really not sure what Petti has to do with this at all. So none of your examples persuade me to give up my diehard believ that in a Republic, the legislature should only have the power to declare war.

But I'm still wondering why you don't think the murder/kidnapping/torture of Americans by Iran since then isn't relevant. Madison thought it was relevant in the 1800's re the Barbary states, which you've been endlessly quoting.

Iran does fit, since they provided financial, logistical, training support and safe haven to Al Queda.

"Whereas, the President has authority under the Constitution to
take action to deter and prevent acts of international terrorism
                      against the United States"

Not "under Congress" or "under this Act", "under the Constitution".

Your continuance to look past what you would/should/do consider to be errors doesn't make them not errors by anyone's definition.

You'd make a better case for SA then Iran behind 911. A bunch of Whabbist Sunni who think Shittes should be put to the sword are in league? Yeah thats a whopper if I've ever heard one.

                    5. Bertram Guilfoyle   4 hours ago

Reality has made the case. The sunni/shia divide is something they will drop and work together, since they think we are worse.

And no one said "behind 9/11"

                      I said
they provided financial, logistical, training support and safe haven to Al Queda.

Which is how they fit under the law cited.

Even if you ignore their financial support of Al Queda, you still haven't explained why you find irrelevant the 800+ Americans killed by Iran.

So none of your examples persuade me to give up my diehard believ that in a Republic, the legislature should only have the power to declare war.

So, you think the GWOT is/was kosher? Or are you saying that, despite what the current Republic is, you know it should be different?

You're arguing that, in the equation x^2 + 4 = 8, x = 2 and 2 only. You're making the argument against people who've clearly laid out that it also equals -2 and that you'd be right if it were |x^2 + 4| = 8, but it's not. Moreover, you're making the case against them in defense of all kinds of people who don't believe in algebra. This is not how you get your |x^2 + 4| = 8.

It is immediate defense, and has been for 47 years. Any administration since 1979 could have and more importantly, should have, done this.

800+ Americans murdered by Iran over that time. It has to end.

Carville doubles down on urging Ilhan Omar to leave the Democratic Party after she blasted white males

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville condemned Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., for attacking White males during a Wednesday episode of SiriusXM’s "Straight Shooter with Stephen A."

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith asked James Carville about a recently resurfaced clip from May 2025 where the strategist had challenged Omar to leave the Democratic Party and start her own. Smith asked him to explain what caused this expression of deep frustration.

Carville replied that Omar has some admirable qualities and is liked by many, "but she started attacking White males, and I'm gonna say, 'Wait a minute, let's stop. Alright.' In 2024, 72% of the people that voted were White. All right? That's just a fact. Of that, 72, probably 48% or 48 and a half, were male."

He then concluded from his calculation that "about 33% of the people that are gonna vote are gonna be White males. Well, it's stupid to attack 33% of the voters!"

"He then concluded from his calculation that "about 33% of the people that are gonna vote are gonna be White males. Well, it's stupid to attack 33% of the voters!""

The "white dudes for Harris" play was a bit of a pumping the brakes realization that "oh shit, we accidentally turned away some of the independents". There were a lot of independent white dudes that voted for Obama. Their play for the Obama multiracial coalition that would never lose was predicated on the fact that the whites that voted for O would just stick with the dems, that they could guarantee them while just pandering to special interest groups.

Then they had an "oopsie we pissed off the biggest voting block in the country" moment. This is why there is a noticeable pullback from the party that's closer to the center. Sure, the Omar's and AOC's are too far gone and they will spew the standard braindead university DEI talking points, but there is a huge chunk in the middle that sees they blew up the most important part of the coalition and they are trying to reverse course.

Trump winning the popular vote should have been a message

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/mamdani-moves-to-close-nyc-s-largest-men-s-homeless-shelter-housing-250/ar-AA1XBt3Q

The city’s largest homeless shelter for men — housing 250 residents in Manhattan — will close by the end of next month, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Thursday.

“My administration is focused on ensuring every New Yorker experiencing homelessness not only has access to shelter, but to spaces that are safe, humane and truly livable. We cannot accept a system that treats people without dignity or stability,” Mamdani said in a statement.

City Hall blamed the sudden move to close the shelter on the administration of Mamdani’s predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams.
