Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton | Action Press/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Action Press/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Hillary Clinton has nothing to say. The former secretary of state and former Democratic presidential candidate faced congressional Republicans in a closed-door deposition yesterday. The subject? What, if anything, she knew about Jeffrey Epstein's criminal activity, or misdeeds by his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Her answer: nada, nothing, zilch.

"I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein. I never flew on his plane or visited his island, homes or offices. I have nothing to add to that," she said in prepared remarks. Move along. Nothing to see here.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

And nothing you could see, even if you, for some reason, wanted to. Although Clinton had pushed for press access, the session was closed to outsiders. At one point, the session was halted after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R–Colo.) shared a photo that was then posted on social media by right-wing personality Benny Johnson. Chaos!

Apparently, Republicans also asked her about UFOs and Pizzagate.

I am, unfortunately, well-enough versed in the various characters and subplots involved that I basically understand what's going on. But this sort of thing increasingly defines politics in the Trump era. I have to imagine that to many Americans, this sort of story comes across like some sort of impenetrable too-online soap opera, or a pro-wrestling match.

Former President Bill Clinton is set to testify today.

Jobs, Blocked. Block, the tech-finance company run by Twitter (now X) founder Jack Dorsey, is laying off approximately 4,000 of its 10,000 employees.

In a message to employees, Dorsey says the reason for the layoffs isn't that the company is doing poorly. Rather, it's that agentic tools—task-executing AI agents like those offered by Anthropic—are changing the way the company understands work.

"Something has changed," Dorsey wrote in a post on X. "We're already seeing that the intelligence tools we're creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. and that's accelerating rapidly."

It's possible that AI is just an excuse for normal layoffs after overhiring. And I don't think that AI will herald the end of work as we know it, at least not in the foreseeable future.

But I do think we will see significant disruptions to the labor market over the next few years, especially in fields that employ a large number of coders and white-collar clerical workers. AI can't yet fully replace human judgment or creativity, though it may be more capable on those fronts than many people currently believe. But it's becoming quite adept at executing multistep assigned tasks that can be performed on a computer.

This will be quite difficult for some people. Job loss is painful. But it will also be an opportunity for innovation and entrepreneurship, as the cost of building and executing a good idea, especially a good idea that primarily involves software and information organization, drops dramatically.

Batman, bought. Last year, storied movie studio Warner Bros., which also owns media properties CNN and D.C. Comics, went up for sale. After rumors and reports that Paramount—recently purchased by David Ellison, son of Oracle cofounder David Ellison—was the most likely suitor, a twist emerged: Streaming behemoth Netflix had made the deal, with an offer valued at about $83 billion.

Since then, Paramount has aggressively sought to counter Netflix, raising its initial offer while hinting that its purchase was much more likely to pass regulatory review, since Larry Ellison is a major Donald Trump donor. Trump was reportedly quite interested in the fate of CNN, which is owned by Warner Bros.

Yesterday, after Warner Bros. board announced that it preferred Paramount's most recent offer of $31 per share—or about $111 billion—Netflix backed out. Paramount won the bidding war. Once the deal is formally approved, D.C. Comics stalwart Batman (and Superman) will have a new owner.

Looked at one way, this appears to be a clean deal. Paramount simply offered more. And Warner Bros. has been sold multiple times over the years; everyone wants to own Batman.

But reports have consistently said that part of Paramount's pitch to Warner Bros. has been that it believes it has a better chance of regulatory approval, owing to its friendliness with Trump. Notably, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos was reportedly in Washington, D.C., yesterday, meeting with federal officials about the deal. And earlier this week, Trump encouraged Netflix to fire a board member, Susan Rice, who'd criticized corporations for taking "a knee to Trump?"

It's worth asking: Was this ultimately a political deal? Did Netflix back out because federal approval looked dicey? Did Trump essentially decide who would own CNN?

Political interference in big mergers existed before Trump. Under Joe Biden, Lina Khan's Federal Trade Commission maintained an almost reflexive stance against large mergers of any kind. But it remains immensely frustrating that big deals have to run through the whims of whoever happens to occupy the Oval Office.

Scenes from Washington, D.C.: "If you are a trained intelligence officer, you're going to the restaurant with the express purpose of developing and cultivating a source that has access to the White House." The Washingtonian covers the relationship between spies and restaurants in D.C.

QUICK HITS

  • The U.S. State Department told Americans in Israel: "Persons may wish to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights are available." Ominous.
  • For the first time in three years, mortgage rates fell below 6 percent. This could help ease the "lock-in" effect, in which buyers with low mortgage interest rates refuse to sell because their next home purchase will come with a much higher rate, that has plagued the housing market for the last several years.
  • Bloomberg looks at the boom in Manhattan megamansions.
  • If you're a cinephile, you've probably watched at least one of those Criterion Library shorts, in which movie stars and directors talk through their picks from the boutique disc-producer's famous, closet-sized library. Well, now you can apply to be that library's coordinator.
  • The Trump-Mamdani bromance continues.

Kathy Ruemmler, former White House counsel to President Barack Obama and chief legal officer at Goldman Sachs, has announced her resignation amid revelations from the latest release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Emails show she maintained a close relationship with Epstein, whom she referred to as “Uncle Jeffrey” and “older brother,” even after his 2008 guilty plea for procuring minors for prostitution.

The correspondence, spanning from 2014 to 2019, includes personal messages, gift exchanges (such as luxury handbags and a fur coat), and strategic advice on handling media inquiries and legal threats. Notably, Ruemmler advised Epstein on responding to a 2019 media inquiry about his alleged special legal treatment and coordinated efforts to manage public relations during a potential ABC News interview with accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

Ruemmler, who previously stated she only knew Epstein professionally and regretted the connection, said she stepped down to avoid distraction from media attention. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon acknowledged her resignation, stating he respected her decision despite initial confidence in her leadership. The House Oversight Committee has expressed interest in questioning her as part of its broader investigation into Epstein’s network

Kathy Ruemmler exchanged emails with Jeffrey Epstein in 2016 regarding Jean-Luc Brunel, the French modeling scout accused of recruiting underage girls for Epstein’s sex trafficking network. Epstein reached out to Ruemmler after learning Brunel was preparing to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors in exchange for immunity, writing: “I want to know more.” He claimed Brunel feared arrest and dismissed his associates as “scammers.”

Ruemmler responded hours later, asking Epstein to call her, and the next day wrote, “Awake now. Talking to Poe in 20 mins,” referring to Gregory Poe, Epstein’s Washington, D.C. lawyer. These communications occurred while Ruemmler was a prominent attorney and later Chief Legal Officer at Goldman Sachs.

The contact with Ruemmler is believed to have helped derail Brunel’s cooperation. Prosecutors did not pursue him, and Epstein remained free for three more years. More than 50 additional girls were trafficked during that time, according to attorneys representing Epstein’s victims.

As details emerged from newly released Justice Department files in February 2026, Ruemmler announced her resignation from Goldman Sachs, effective at the end of June 2026, citing her regret over her association with Epstein. She has stated she never represented Epstein and claimed she directed him to his legal counsel.

Kathy Ruemmler, Obama's former White House counsel who just resigned as Goldman Sachs' top lawyer over Epstein ties, was exchanging emails with Epstein in 2016 about Jean-Luc Brunel's legal situation.

Epstein told Ruemmler that lawyer David Boies had secured Brunel "full immunity" and was taking him to the US attorney, that Brunel demanded $3 million, and that neither Brunel nor his lawyer "are capable of telling the truth."

Brunel was later charged with rape of minors and was found hanged in his prison cell before trial.

The FBI listed him as one of Epstein's co-conspirators.

And Obama's top legal adviser was in the loop on his immunity deal.

Re: Reason's continued harping on "worst-of-the-worst" what we see over and over are things like this, which simply give rise to the need to surge ICE into areas and if they round up lower-level criminal aliens, so be it. Instead of cooperating with federal authorities seeking to deport them, Oregon will continue to release murderers, rapists, and other violent felon unauthorized aliens back onto the streets.

    https://www.kdrv.com/news/regional/oregon-democrats-block-plan-to-notify-ice-on-felons-release/article_e89e59c4-554e-48ac-8942-2adf3bd4ad38.html

Oregon Democrats block plan to notify ICE on felons' release

Senate Democrats have blocked a proposal aimed at increasing cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. The proposal targeted illegal immigrants convicted of felony crimes.

The Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) would have been allowed to track immigration information and coordinate with federal authorities. This would enable federal officials to decide whether to take custody of individuals after serving their sentences.

Can't push more gun control laws without freed felons running around. This is not exclusive to illegals. If the repeats and the illegals are violating the rest of us, we the people need to end them. Can't play catch-and-release if they are dead.

Reason and democrats openly lie about being willing to deport criminals. Often when confronted on who they would deport they refuse to say. We've seen blue states refuse to hand over rapists and murderers.

So, a la tariffs as consumption taxes relative to income taxes; "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here" deportation relative to incarceration is, or should be, a rather overt and favorable libertarian outcome.

We can't *prove* who raped a 10 yr. old girl who needed an abortion, but sending her mother's illegal-immigrant situationship back to Mexico or Guatemala is better than locking some other random person in a cage.

The fact that Reason relatively flatly and unilaterally opposes it in every last instance just shows that they support the fraud, extortion, and terribly disgusting crime at both ends.

    https://www.aporiamagazine.com/p/euthanized-while-white

Whites made up 96% of euthanized Canadians in 2024. I couldn’t believe it. Yes, euthanasia mostly involves seniors, and older Canadians are whiter. But the 65+ age bracket was only 86% white at the last census in 2021 and is less so today (Statistics Canada, 2025).

I looked up the latest report on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) in Canada. Here is the relevant paragraph:

A total of 15,927 of the 16,499 people who received MAID in 2024 responded to this question, the vast majority of whom (95.6%) identified as Caucasian (White). For context on how this compares to the overall population of Canada, approximately 70% of people in Canada identified as Caucasian in the most recent Census. (Health Canada, 2025, p. 32)

Again, if ICE "accidentally" rounded up 20,000 native born or fully naturalized US citizens, Reason wouldn't have to sift through to pick out the "Maryland Dads" and defend Venezuelans who may or may not have been beating ICE agents with brooms and shovels. There would be 40, 60, 80K voices in 160K news articles about how Jesus the plumber got his green card back in '86, became a citizen in '91 and had been running a plumbing business for dozens of clients and employees and contractors for the last 35 yrs.

Instead, we get quotes from Cato about how a random group of people who have felony arrests at twice the rate of the population average are not the "worst of the worst" *and*, oxymoronically, that immigrants commit *fewer* crimes than natives.

The Census Decision That Reshaped The House And Redirected Billions
    https://americanliberty.news/commentary/the-census-decision-that-reshaped-the-house-and-redirected-billions/amuse/2026/02/

The 2020 census was marketed as an “actual enumeration,” a neutral count of people for apportionment and funding. It was not. The same official who helped block a basic citizenship question in 2018, John M. Abowd, then the Census Bureau’s chief scientist, pushed through a new, opaque methodology in 2020 called differential privacy. The new system deliberately injected mathematical noise into every block count in America, turning the census from a headcount into a model with knobs. The knob that mattered most was a single parameter, epsilon, a secrecy shroud known only to a small inner circle. Abowd argued that a single added question about citizenship posed an intolerable risk to data quality because there was, he said, not enough time to test it. Then he rushed an untested algorithm that altered every count in every neighborhood. The irony is so sharp it cuts: the man who warned that one question might distort the census approved a method that guaranteed distortion.

The Ontario Court of Appeal has reduced the sentence of Kenneth Morrison, an Indigenous man involved in a deadly home invasion that resulted in the death of a disabled resident, from life imprisonment to 12 years. The court said that a “vulnerable man, living with cerebral palsy, senselessly died when attacked in his own home. Normally, for a gun-wielding participant to a home invasion robbery, the sentence would be higher than 12 years.”

But the court cited Morrison’s Indigenous status and “the impact of colonialism” as mitigating factors in lowering his sentence. The Justice Centre believes that granting lighter sentences based on race undermines the rule of law, and should be repugnant to Canadians who care about equality, fairness and justice for victims.

Columbia “student” Elmina Aghayeva had her student visa terminated in 2016 because she wasn’t going to class. Even setting aside that she is illegally in the US, how is she still an undergraduate in 2026?

How did a 13th-year undergraduate get into Columbia, which is supposed to be one of the most exclusive, selective universities in the world? How did she remain a student in good standing when Columbia students are required to complete a full load of courses each semester?

Activists Mohsen Mahdawi and Mahmoud Khalil, both “students” in their thirties who did not seem to attend much class, had similar academic histories. There are probably many others like them. Side doors are being opened into colleges that reject 95% of American applicants, to enroll 30 year-old foreign operatives who organize building occupations and antisemitic encampments.

How are they getting admitted? Why aren’t they getting kicked out for academic failure? Who is paying their $70k tuition?

These aliens do not meet the normal academic requirements for admission, do not fulfill the requirements that are supposed to be required to remain a student, and do not go to class; they are here to destabilize American institutions and spread antisemitism. We have to deport them all.

Needless to say, our terrorist-loving mayor, who is backed by the same people, dropped everything to go to Washington to get her out of immigration detention.

In 1949, Newfoundland joined Canada after a democratic referendum decided by just 52% of voters.

That result wasn’t a landslide. It was close, contested, and deeply emotional — families, communities, and political leaders were divided. But Canada accepted the outcome because democracy operates on a simple principle:

    Majority rule.

There was debate at the time. Turnout mattered. Campaigns were intense. Some people wanted independence, others preferred responsible government, and many opposed Confederation entirely. Yet once the votes were counted, the decision stood — because a clear majority chose a direction.

    That precedent matters today.

If 52% was considered legitimate enough for a place to join Canada, it is reasonable to argue that a similar democratic threshold could be legitimate for a place to leave — provided the question is clear and the vote is fair.

Supporting Alberta independence isn’t about anger or division. It’s about recognizing that democratic consent is the foundation of Confederation itself.

Canada was built through political choices made by voters. Those choices don’t become permanent simply because time passes.

If people have the democratic right to enter Confederation, they must also have the democratic right to reconsider it.

    That’s not extremism.

    That’s precedent.

So, Biden ordered the army to remove the border fencing to allow migrants to stream across. Texas tried to enforce the border with the national guard, Biden sued them to stop. The migrants were told to download an app on their phone so they could apply for asylum. If someone did not have a phone, one was provided for them. They were then shipped onto busses and airplanes destined for primarily purple and red states. In order to get on a plane one must provide an ID. Some migrants found this impossible since they burned their passports/ licenses. Biden said any government document will do. Some had criminal records, including rape. Biden said that’s perfect! Sign this paper that says you’ll talk to a lib therapist and that you promise to stop raping and you can get onto your plane to the new small conservative town that will be forced to take you in, provide you housing, food, and medical care.
