Elon Musk promises new political party: Like Larry David opening up a spite store, so too will Elon Musk start a spite party if President Donald Trump's domestic policy bill passes.

"If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day," wrote Musk on X. "Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE." (Technically speaking, that alternative already exists, and it's politically rather aligned with where Musk appears to be on most issues.)

"Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!" he had written just hours prior. "And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth."

"Please support @RepThomasMassie," replied former Rep. Justin Amash (L–Mich.). "The establishment is working to primary him because he's a genuine fiscal conservative and opposes the Big, Bloated Scam." To which Musk vowed: "I will."

Of course, our ketamine space prince makes big gambles. He had formerly been thick as thieves with the president, but now that his tenure as head honcho of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has ended—and he started criticizing the president's domestic policy spending plans—the relationship has soured, with Musk implying Trump spent lots of time on Jeffrey Epstein's island and Trump saying Musk has a drug problem. (One of us, one of us!) It's disappointing that Musk and other deficit hawks haven't made a big dent in the White House, or shaped Trump's thinking very much, but I like Musk's pivot from voice to exit: A new political party (or perhaps PAC?), generously funded by Musk, to support a movement of legitimate fiscal conservatives feels like just what we need during a time of ascendant socialism and populist right-wingers intent on spending us silly.

Of course, it was just, what, six weeks ago, that Musk claimed in an interview at the Qatar Economic Forum that "in terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future." He changes his mind a lot when it comes to strategy but has at least been a committed free market guy for pretty much his entire life.

His companies have also benefited from government subsidies, which Trump is threatening to pull. "Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate," wrote the president on Truth Social early this morning. "It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one. Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!" ("I think we should get rid of all credits," Musk has said in the past. "Take away the subsidies. It will only help Tesla," he's written. "Remove subsidies from all industries!")

Reporter: Are you going to deport Elon Musk?

Trump: We'll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? The monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies. pic.twitter.com/6I0OAIv7Js

Scenes from New York: "Mamdani, and all others who advocate universal publicly-funded child care, mistake the needs that mothers actually have—the things they say they want, the types of child care arrangements they favor—assuming all parents want the state to sublimate their roles. Socialists pretend they want to support mothers and motherhood. But they don't understand what type of help mothers need at all.

In 2022, the think tank Institute for Family Studies asked mothers of children under 18 what their "ideal situation" would be, in terms of time spent with kids vs. working. They found that 42 percent of mothers wanted to work full-time; 32 percent had an ideal of part-time work; and 22 percent would ideally choose no paid work at all."

This is from a feature I published this morning on why democratic socialist—and probably my next mayor—Zohran Mamdani doesn't actually understand what mothers in New York City want and need.

"Note Mamdani's sneakiness: He talks about child care as a 'burden' which 'falls heaviest on mothers' and seems to imply that giving up 'paying jobs' to perform 'unpaid childcare' is some great travesty. 'This campaign/worldview does not grant mothers an active role in these decisions about how to make their family economies work, just assumes they are crushed by circumstance,' remarks Meredith Thornburgh, getting her doctorate in household economics at Princeton, with toddler in tow."

Look, no disrespect to the many #girlbosses who live among us: Many women want to work full-time and have lots of child care coverage; for the state to make that cheaper is a good thing for them, if they're fine with the care options provided. But socialists seem to think that all mothers want to hand over their 6-week-old infants to government-run day cares to go log long hours in the button factories, or whatever, and I just don't know a single woman who craves that.

New York City makes it hard to raise children in ways big and small: Our decades-long rent-stabilization regime, and lack of sufficient supply, makes it hard to find affordable real estate. Our subway elevators are populated by drug-addled loonies, so moms with strollers can't get up and down to the platform. Foisting a one-size-fits-all child care program on the taxpayers probably won't solve the needs of approximately half of families and certainly won't fix the other things that drive family flight out of New York.

QUICK HITS

  • "After formally cutting off International Atomic Energy Agency inspections last week, Iranian nuclear-safety regulators have stopped taking calls from the United Nations watchdog, according to two officials who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive information," reports Bloomberg. "The communication blackout underscores the degree to which Iran is using silence as a way to obscure international understanding over the status of its nuclear program. Tehran had previously allowed an average of more than one IAEA inspection a day and took part in five rounds of talks with the US about a deal to curb its atomic activities, but the Israeli assault has changed the equation."

  • Big, Beautiful Bill update: "Senators voted overwhelmingly overnight to strip a provision that would effectively block states from passing and enforcing laws on artificial intelligence for the next decade. The vote was 99-1, with Mr. Tillis casting the sole vote against it," reports The New York Times.

              Was really good*

And I'd even debate the really part. His books were decent. Often starting out great, building a good scene, then meandering as he couldn't figure out how to get to an ending.

I'll assume you are right. I haven't read much recent stuff and I'm not any kind of big fan, I've probably read maybe 10 of his books. There are a few I really like though and think are pretty brilliant.

I’d still love to see a good on screen adaptation of The Stand and The Dark Tower.

Unfortunately King’s involvement makes that unlikely at this point. I was very disappointed when he came out and said it didn’t matter if Roland was black. The irony being it destroyed the actual black character’s story arc.

                1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

The irony being it destroyed the actual black character’s story arc.

Which was a really good arc. Overcoming bigotry and fear by recognizing honor and earning respect.

                2. Zeb   2 months ago

The Dark Tower will always be too much to try to put in a movie. I couldn't make it past the first 10 minutes of the movie that did get made. I think just The Gunslinger could make a good self-contained movie, though, if it was done fairly faithfully.

                  1. Dillinger   2 months ago

                    >>The Dark Tower will always be too much to try to put in a movie.

Agree, it would have to be a multi-season series.

                  3. EISTAU Gree-Vance   2 months ago

I read the first 2 or 3 books in that series and liked them well enough, but then I realized there were 3 or 4 more to go.

Ain’t nobody got time for that.

                    1. Zeb   2 months ago

The 4th is probably worth it. It came out before he got hit by the car and nearly died. After that, I think it's still quite good for the most part, but it is long and not as strong as the earlier books.

                    2. Dillinger   2 months ago

read the 4th one and enjoyed it but got tired of being taught how to say words and forgot to even try 5th and 6th

edit: I started with Pet Sematary when I was like 11 and read it in one sitting. totally hooked read everything he wrote until that 4th book

            2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

he's really good at writing stuff that's fun to read and creating worlds and myths

              Did you read The Gunslinger?

After 6 1/2 good books, one of them absolutely fantastic, he killed the Walking Dude ignominiously, ripped off JK Rowling, literally erased the super-antagonist, and then whipped out time travel so he didn't have to finish. Seriously one of the worst endings to a sci-fi series ever written.

              1. GOD OF PENGUIN ISLAND   2 months ago

And on and on it goes…

              2. Zeb   2 months ago

Yeah, that series is my favorite of his. But I agree, the ending is weak. I like everything up to the final approach to the tower, though. The part where King himself appears could have been left out too. I think he wanted to rewrite it to get rid of that but then decided just to be done with the series.

                1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

He lost me when the 20th level wizard super villain gets one-shot by a goblin.

            3. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

I agree with you that he could created amazing concepts and worlds, but almost without fail, the endings to his books are terrible. It seems as though he puts all this work into creating the concept and characters but gets bored of the work before finishing and just phones in any random ending.

I didn't mind the endings to Misery and The Shining.

              1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

The end of The Stand was good - sacrifice is required for freedom and we must be ever vigilant because evil is never truly conquered.

Libertarians for income tax increases: "why don't trump aand the gop cut more!!!"

Reality: democrats vote against removing illegals from Medicaid after Parliamentarian says following the law is changing policy and cant be done in reconciliation.

    1. Zeb   2 months ago

Rs have a majority. They could refuse to pass anything until democrats agree to real cuts, removing illegals from Medicare, reforming SS, etc. Now's the time while it's still a decent amount of time before an election. They could also not increase military spending. There's no fucking way we aren't spending enough on the military.

      1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

This bill is in regards to mandatory spending programs that keep spending even during a shut down. This is not the budget bill. So not passing anything means spending stays elevated. Rs doing nothing means status quo continues.

What they could do is replace the parliamentarian, appointed by Reid, vote to overrule her, or JD can dismiss her ruling. Seems to be the last defense against status quo.

As for military, half rhe budget is paying for personal. IRAD isnt actually that much. It is base maintenance, troop pay and training, VA, college, etc.

Only reasonable option there is closing foreign bases which have to be done through regular order I believe, ie 60 vote threshold.

“ Tariff alarmism using all the tools of climate alarmism.”

Can we get you on record promising to admit, whenever prompted, that you were wrong if the tariffs cause prices to rise (as they inevitably will)? Or will you just keep talking about how they didn’t go up immediately, which exactly zero people said, and therefore it wasn’t the tariffs?

I’m guessing you will choose dishonesty.

      1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

        Lol. "Inevitably will"

So you'll ignore the data now (as you've been wrong) then use the fact the Fed has a 2% inflationary goal to prove tariffs raised prices despite any other action that occurs.

So the tools of climate alarmism.

Thanks for proving the point buddy!

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

          1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

Why i stopped responding to him. He pushes a lot of narratives he doesn't understand.

The voting power he is claiming is nationalization is merely: no name change, no shutting down plants, floor on production. Done in response to issues like Britain where China bought/closed all their steel plants. And it is just a 5 year agreement. Already have other steel plants ramping up, the reason for the 5 year window.

He doesn't seem to understand the issue.

            1. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 months ago

              is merely:

              Aka mostly peaceful

              1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

Wailing that the US government's restrictions on a foreign corporation's purchase of a giant company in a keystone industry is "nationalization" is every bit as hyperbolic and offensive as "mostly peaceful". Nippon Steel is not being compelled.

If you were calling it tortious interference, I would agree. If the deal leads to increased cost for taxpayers, I would agree that it is bad.

Tariffs demonstrate even to an idiot that the federal government receives a sizable portion of money that businesses that base themselves on American natural resources do not have to pay. For example, if you turn united confederation trees into paper, you do not have to pay tariffs on your products that they buy or do not buy.

                2. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 months ago

Just because Nippon's cost benefit on the deal let them still make it; doesn't justify Trump's taking. Nothing does. Nippon isn't communist China, but now we are one step closer to being Communist China. One of my complaints with CCCP is them interfering in deals like this.

                  1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

OK, starting to make a logical argument rather than hyperbolic nonsense. And you reveal your motivations. This is how we can have an honest dialogue.

I fail to understand how the regulation of a foreign corporation on US soil is NOT the purview of the US government. It is a delegated power. Regulation is not free market, but, arguably, is not a taking.

                    1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

I always find it weird om what regulations they get upset about. It seems yo only be ones the effect foreign competitors. Rarely decrying domestic regulations.

Free trade also requires all actors to play by the same rules. But not noting regulatory imbalances by country is often stated as part of free trade. Largely the great delusion that the system last year was a free market.

I understand your concerns about Marxist creep, but there must be a representative present to vote. Nippon manages every decision for their company, the US rep is limited to a veto. Seems to me that Nippon would have to violate the conditions they willingly accepted and trigger that veto before any taking has occurred.

Abolition [Aufhebung] of the family! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Communists.

On what foundation is the present family, the bourgeois family, based? On capital, on private gain. In its completely developed form, this family exists only among the bourgeoisie. But this state of things finds its complement in the practical absence of the family among the proletarians, and in public prostitution.

The bourgeois family will vanish as a matter of course when its complement vanishes, and both will vanish with the vanishing of capital.

Do you charge us with wanting to stop the exploitation of children by their parents? To this crime we plead guilty.

But, you say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace home education by social.

And your education! Is not that also social, and determined by the social conditions under which you educate, by the intervention direct or indirect, of society, by means of schools, &c.? The Communists have not invented the intervention of society in education; they do but seek to alter the character of that intervention, and to rescue education from the influence of the ruling class.

The bourgeois clap-trap about the family and education, about the hallowed co-relation of parents and child, becomes all the more disgusting, the more, by the action of Modern Industry, all the family ties among the proletarians are torn asunder, and their children transformed into simple articles of commerce and instruments of labour.

        Mega-Murders—Over 1 Million Victims

        Regime Years Democide (000,000s) Summary

        A. Dekamurders (over 10 million victims)

People's Republic of China. 1949-87. 87.6 million people murdered. Mao et al. communist regime. Does not include 3.5 million murders by Chinese communists during the 1927-49 civil war.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 1917-87. 61.9 million people murdered. Communist regime. Includes 54.8 million within the Soviet Union, plus 6.9 million in areas conquered by the USSR. Josef Stalin's rule (1929-53) accounts for 43 million. On an annualized basis, the pre-Stalin regime founded by Lenin was more murderous than the post-Stalin one.

Germany. 1933-45. 20.9 million people murdered. National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi). Includes Hitler regime's murders throughout occupied Europe. Does not include WWII battle deaths.

China, 1928-49. 10.1 million people murdered. Kuomintang party. Although the party was originally Leninist in orientation, I did not count them in the communist total.

Socialism vs Communism is a distinction without a difference. They both result in the same thing. Central control and "peaceful government programs" (read pogroms) that result in more death, by factors, than any other category, including religious wars.

Strictly speaking that is socialism. Communism is the theoretical end point where the state is no longer needed. Which of course can never happen because people aren't actually malleable like that.

I don't argue in the impossible theoretical which is what marx argued. It is impossible to align 100% of human thought into the same belief system which is what no government requires.

Prefer speaking in the non theoretical as that is what we actually get. It is also why no government libertarianism can ever exist.

Does anyone actually believe these "watchdogs" were inspecting or accomplishing anything in the first place?

Tony. Even after being given the IAEA saying Iran was barring them from locations in 2017.

Has there been any indication that the big healthcare fraud stemmed from Doge? My guess is not since an investigation that big was probably already started.

Then again 15 billion doesn’t really fix the deficit so who cares?

    4. Nelson   2 months ago

They were targeting “waste, fraud, and abuse”, where there is very little to save, and ignoring everything else where there is a whole, whole lot to save.

Reform entitlements, freeze military spending, and balance the budget. That’s the path, but Trump prefers “borrow more money than anyone else in history”, then is astonished when fiscal hawks call him out on his bullshit.

      1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

Lol. God damn this was fucking funny. Barely any fraud. Fucking hilarious.

        1. Zeb   2 months ago

Compared to the other things he mentions, how much potential savings from waste, fraud and abuse do you think there is?
Personally, I think it's most of the federal government, but my definition of waste fraud and abuse is probably broader than most people's and includes entitlements, a lot of military spending and all borrowing to pay for budget deficits.

          1. GOD OF PENGUIN ISLAND   2 months ago

The healthcare fraud bust I mentioned above is estimated at 15 billion.

            1. Zeb   2 months ago

A billion here and there and pretty soon you're talking about real money. I definitely think they should go after any and all fraud and misappropriation. But congress still needs to reduce the appropriations. And cut way more than the fraudulent spending.
And military spending is increasing by what? 100 billion?

Tesla shares in death spiral after Trump's ruthless claim about Elon Musk's companies

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/yourmoney/article-14864667/tesla-stock-price-falls-trump-claim-elon-musk.html

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Musk said the bill's reported $3 trillion price tag would send the country into 'DEBT SLAVERY.'

He threatened to fund primary campaigns against Trump-backed candidates that supported the bill.

Trump hit back with a series of threats, suggesting the federal government could launch investigations into Musk's companies.

He even hinted at deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa.

'Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,' Trump posted on Truth social.

'No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this?'

What a petty, vindictive manchild. They say pets take on the characteristics of their owners. That would explain why the majority of Trump defenders behave like petty, vindictive children.

Tesla's stock fell between 5.5 and seven points in pre-market trading on Tuesday after the barbs. The stock is down nearly 13 percent in the past five days.

Seriously though, does that mean it's time to buy?

    1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

Now you're for EV credits and pro Elon after calling him a nazi for raising his hand? Lol.

      1. Nelson   2 months ago

        Even Elon isn’t pro-EV subsidies.

        1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

Oh. So his various companies stopped pricing based on these subsidies?

I would love to see your cite.

The only one I've seen is him criticizing Biden for expanding EV to help his competitors as Tesla has the price point on the market after getting almost 5B in credits prior.

          But do go on.

          1. CE   2 months ago

His competitors needed the subsidies more than Tesla did. At least, until he alienated over half of his customer base. CEOs should stay out of politics, or put someone else in charge first.

ALL third parties are doomed to fail in America, not just the Libertarian Party or the America Party. Our representative legislative system morphed into a two-party system long ago. The only thing the Republicans and the Democrats agree on is keeping third parties out. Until the two-party system is replaced by a direct representative choice election system, only Democrats and Republicans will have any representation. And because their representatives have a near-total lock on their districts, politicians don't need to actually represent their constituents, they only have to satisfy the top party officials in Congress and the state legislatures.

    1. sarcasmic   2 months ago

The only thing we can hope for is that the two major parties split up. Let the assholes and cunts form their parties, and the rational people form theirs. Then hope the rational people beat out the assholes and cunts in the election.

    2. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

It was designed at the outset as a two party system based on congressional rules...

It became harder for a third party after state representation was taken from the legislature and given to the people.

Twice major parties were replaced. None since change to senate elections.

No, the masses receive free market solutions for their problems whilst being encouraged to move on with their lives and evelop their politics from good examples such as, "A penny saved is a penny earned." The founders were surely wise for anticipating that money would be needful for social acts of trade for a long time.
