Normalizing Relations

President Donald Trump in Syria with representatives of the Syrian government | EyePress/Newscom
(EyePress/Newscom)

Trump says we might normalize relations with Syria: Last year, Bashar al-Assad's regime collapsed. Now, President Donald Trump is in the Middle East, exploring normalizing relations with the new government of Syria and promising to lift sanctions.

Trump met with Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa (a historic moment, because the heads of the U.S. and Syria have not sat down together since 2000). "With the support of leaders in this room, and the great leaders you are, we are currently exploring normalizing relations with Syria's new government," said Trump. "It gives them a chance for greatness," he added. "The sanctions were really crippling, very powerful."

Normalizing relations with Syria would align with Saudi Arabia's goal of ensuring the new Syrian government doesn't establish too close a relationship with Iran, one of Assad's closest backers. It would also possibly complicate the U.S.-Israel relationship, as Israel has been conducting airstrikes on southwestern Syria since the toppling of the Assad regime. (Syria's Foreign Ministry said that Israel's strikes in April were responsible for the "near-total destruction of the Hama military airport and the injury of dozens of civilians and military personnel"; multiple cities and air bases have been targeted over the last few months.) But the possibility of ending sanctions on Syria and the new government being able to rebuild the country is a welcome one; a slightly more stable Middle East might be in sight.

This one Resistance trick will surely work: "As President Trump visits Qatar amid the controversy over its proposed gift of a $400 million luxury plane," reports The New York Times, "the Democratic National Committee announced plans to fly a sky banner over his Mar-a-Lago club today that reads 'Qatar-a-Lago.'" Wow, they really got him, didn't they?

Look, a Qatari plane being used as the new Air Force One certainly presents issues. "Aside from any legal and ethical qualms about Trump accepting the plane—an 89-seater with a sumptuous French-designed interior—there are technical and security concerns too," reports Bloomberg. "Experts say any such gift on a foreign government's behalf presents opportunities for surveilling, tracking or compromising communications of the president and anyone traveling with him." Trump should probably be a touch less flattered and a bit more worried by this possibility. But if this is the Democratic Party's best shot at countering the many legal, ethical, and constitutional violations by the Trump administration, we're in for a very long four years.

Scenes from New York: Excellent points made by Curtis Sliwa, who will definitely not become mayor but is nevertheless running. (Classic Sliwa, whose iconic beret always reminds me of this Norm Macdonald quote.)

The MTA is wasting billions trying to stop fare evasion with these useless turnstile additions. Meanwhile, trains are late, fares are too high, and more transit officers are still desperately needed. QUICK HITS

  • Sure looks like she's running:

  • "Qatar spent three times more in the U.S. than Israel did on lobbyists, public-relations advisers, and other foreign agents in 2021—and nearly two-thirds as much as China did, according to the government's latest reports," reports The Free Press in a thorough investigation on Qatari influence.
  • Never forget Joe Biden's vigorous young aides:

  • From Noah Smith (this week's Just Asking Questions guest): "I do think there's some evidence that many forms of U.S. pop culture—music, movies, video games, books—are stagnating, at least as far as mass consumption is concerned….An increasing percent of what Americans consume comes from franchises, sequels, remakes, and established creators," he writes. And Katherine Dee writes that books and music and movies have become less important (excerpted within Smith's piece): "[T]here's a new culture all around us…We just don't register it as 'culture.'…We're witnessing the rise of new forms of cultural expression. If these new forms aren't dismissed by critics, it's because most of them don't even register as relevant….The social media personality is one example of a new form….not quite performance art, but something like it….The same is true of TikTok….There is a lot of innovation on TikTok—particularly with comedy….Creating mood boards on Pinterest or curating aesthetics on TikTok are evolving art forms, too. Constructing an atmosphere, or 'vibe,' through images and sounds, is itself a form of storytelling, one that's been woefully misunderstood….They're a type of immersive art that we don't yet have the language to fully describe." Writer David Marx "differentiates 'art' and 'entertainment' based not on their quality, but on the intent of their creators," notes Smith. "'Art' is when creators try to push the boundaries of creative expression with new forms and new ideas; 'Entertainment' is when creators just want to please the masses. When creators stop trying to make art and just make entertainment, you get a decrease in novelty, because people aren't trying as hard to push the boundaries—there is no avant-garde."
  • How did Mississippi fix its public schools? It retrained teachers and focused on phonics instruction:

Instead, Mississippi did something very boring and very smart: they changed the curriculum. They retrained teachers. That's it: https://t.co/36z4Ei0tmX

    3. But SkyNet is a Private Company   4 hours ago

After assuming the presidency , records reveal Donald Trump Jr and his business associates formed at least 15 companies," the memo said. Those companies include Lion Hall Group LLC; Owasco P.C.; Robinson Walker, LLC; Skaneateles, LLC; Seneca Global Advisors, LLC; Rosemont Seneca Partners, LLC; Rosemont Seneca Principal Investments LLC; Rosemont Seneca Bohai, LLC; Hudson West III, LLC; Hudson West V, LLC; CEFC Infrastructure Investment (US) and others.

"Bank records show the Trump family, their business associates, and their companies received over $20 million from foreign nationals’ companies," the memo said, adding that the committee identified payments to Trump family members from foreign companies "while Donald Trump served as President and after he left public office."
"[T]he Trump family used business associates’ companies to receive millions of dollars from foreign companies," the memo said, adding that the Trump family "received incremental payments over time to different bank accounts."

"In some instances, Trump associates would receive significant deposits from foreign sources into their bank accounts and then transfer smaller, incremental payments to Trump bank accounts," the memo said. "These complicated and seemingly unnecessary financial transactions appear to be a concerted effort to conceal the source and total amount received from the foreign companies."

Remember that Don Jr was paying all of Trump’s expenses and his brothers were writing him checks for “loan repayments” in the amount of 10% of their windfalls from the passthru LLCs

Indiana Jones - great game, but pop culture.

Blue Prince - great game, far from AAA (still an outstanding and unique title).

The Code of Federal Regulations contains over 48,000 sections, stretching over 175,000 pages—far more than any citizen can possibly read, let alone fully understand. Worse, many carry potential criminal penalties for violations. The situation has become so dire that no one—likely including those charged with enforcing our criminal laws at the Department of Justice—knows how many separate criminal offenses are contained in the Code of Federal Regulations, with at least one source estimating hundreds of thousands of such crimes. Many of these regulatory crimes are “strict liability” offenses, meaning that citizens need not have a guilty mental state to be convicted of a crime.

The city that prides itself on $2 MILLION (including land) free seaside condos for homeless is about to be bankrupt after paying $1 million each to ~400 men who were molested as boys by ONE city employee, whose crimes were covered up & ignored over nearly a decade.

This tiny, iconic community of just 90,000 people now has to sell city properties, close libraries, restrict city services & dramatically increase permit/utility fees to be able to function.

Homeless and criminals here come before little kids.

Despite this impending bankruptcy, city leaders refuse to end their homeless housing construction obsession or close their pricey DEI office.

Very sad to see such a great city fail due to the incompetence & corruption of a few individuals.

    Houman David Hemmati, MD, PhD
    @houmanhemmati
Yes. It’s very sad. It’s a man who was a civilian, non-police, employee of the police department. I think he did tech support or something like that. Anyway, they gave him a police car and a badge despite him not being a police officer. The city built a place for at risk youth, typically those with no dad, to hang out after school so they would not get into trouble. It is called the Police Activities League (PAL). This guy would volunteer at PAL. And used his badge and car as a way of earning the trust of these boys and would take them to the office of his father, who was a physician, after hours, claiming that he would perform sports physicals on them and then molest them there. This went on for many many years. People reported it, but the council members ignored it and tried to cover it up.

"Look, a Qatari plane being used as the new Air Force One certainly presents issues."

    No it doesn't.

The Qutar B747 was built in the US by Boeing. They are offering a newer 747 to replace one of the two current AF-1s that have been flying for 40 years. Which are tired and need to be replaced. The wing based at Andrews has also purchased aircraft from other countries in the past which are currently flying our VP and senior government officials. This is NOT new.

Qatar is offering the jet to the US military, not Donald Trump. The DOD contractor is based in the US, in fact my dad (a retired Air Force general) used to work for them. They are, not unironically, also working to upgrade the FAA technology as we speak. You know, Newark and elsewhere. They will get the aircraft and perform all of the security and the installation of the systems that AF-1 requires to safely move our president around the world. Not the Qatari’s. And you and I will pay for that but not the $400 million the 747 would normally cost. I could tell you exactly what is required to modify the AF-1 for safe flight but that is Top Secret and I’d have to kill you.

This AF-1 will serve the sitting president, whether they be Republican or Democrat until Boeing gets their shit together to complete the new, upcoming improved 747s that started under Obama, was renegotiated under Trump, and was completely ignored by the Biden administration. It’s looking like 2029 to 2030 for delivery at the soonest.

He’s not. If the two new 747s are ready by then, it get retired to his presidential library never to be flown again, to be used as an exhibit all can enter. If the two new 747s aren’t ready, the next president or presidents use it till those are ready. Then it gets retired. Of course, if you read the stories, you’d already know this.

"Why a contentious project to raise California’s Shasta Dam could move forward under Trump"
    [...]
"Near the southern flank of Mount Shasta, springs and snowmelt converge to form the McCloud River. This Sacramento River tributary, held sacred by the Winnemem Wintu tribe, teemed with Chinook salmon before Shasta Dam, built in the 1940s, blocked their annual migrations.
“The winter run was the main sustenance source for the Winnemem Wintu throughout history,” said tribal member Gary Mulcahy. “We consider them the grandfather of all salmon.”

The Bureau's wanting to raise it to capture more water. It's been controversial for a long time already because it blocked the salmon run.

There are ways to make it work with the salmon. Has any party there heard of using fish ladders with the dam?

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 hours ago

It's not necessarily that simple. Yes, fish ladders are an option, but they have to be installed in a way that also doesn't threaten the integrity of the dam. And if the geology of the dam site doesn't allow for that installation, there isn't really much that can be done.

The last thing the Bureau wants is a repeat of the Teton Dam disaster.

There's also the question of whether going up ladders on a taller structure will leave the fish too exhausted to continue swimming further upstream.

            1. VinniUSMC   2 hours ago

There's a lot of really cool solutions which allow for fish to be able to get upstream of a dam. Most of them aren't that hard, and require no changes to the main dam. I don't recall what I watched, presumably a science-y YouTuber, but it showed some really interesting methods employed by various dams and locks around the world.

Not that it would help California. It would take 10 years of environment impact studies and go from $20 million to $20 billion budget in the next 5 years, before any ground is ever even broken. Worthless wastes of space in Commiefornia.

“Helping whites people is against what we stand for.”

One of the great things about the Trump Afrikaner refugee policy is that it’s getting people, including church leaders, to say what they really think about white people. No more inferences now. It’s out in the open. Good.

"Looking good for Kamala Harris, not so much for Karen Bass, poll shows
    [...]
"California voters have sharply differing views over two of the state’s most prominent Democrats, according to a new poll.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to decide by the end of the summer whether she runs for California governor in 2026, has near universal name recognition among California voters, and 50% view her favorably, according to a survey by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies that was co-sponsored by The Times.

The contrast between how Trump handles foreign policy and how the establishment handled it is really a contrast of the feminine and the masculine as much as anything. Contrast this with how Bush handled the election of Hamas in Gaza. The US was all about having an election in Gaza until they had one and the wrong people won. The US response to this was very much like a overbearing mother dealing with recalcitrant children. They broke all diplomatic contact with Hamas and kicked them and Gaza out of the international banking system such that it was impossible for Hamas to operate as an ordinary government even if it wanted to. Nanny Bush and Secretary Rice sent the Gazans to their room to think about what they had done and were going to leave them there until they decided to act better. All this accomplished was to make Hamas totally dependent and under the control of the Iranians. Maybe that would have been true anyway, but we will never know, and Bush and Rice ensured it was true no matter what.

Here, Trump doesn't treat the Syrians like children to be governed and disciplined. For better or worse, these guys won the civil war and now run Syria. We are not going into Syria to change that. Trump understands that and views reality as it is not as he wants it to be. Since they are the government of Syria, Trump offers them an incentive to act in ways that are in our interests. He doesn't nag them like a overbearing mother. He offers them cash and things they need. Just as importantly, he asks reasonable things in return. He is not expecting them to turn Syria into a Western Democracy or telling them they need to embrace their gays and trans or become a vassal state of the US. It is basic things like don't murder your Christians, keep control of your territory, and don't let terrorists operate inside your country. Things they can agree to without humiliating themselves or selling out everything they claim to believe in. It is not personal with Trump. These guys winning the civil war isn't a personal affront to him. It is just another problem to be solved. That is a very masculine way of dealing with the world.

At least since the Clinton Administration, American foreign policy has been for the US to the world's nagging mother. Everything is about emotion, bullying, control, and vindictiveness. This is one of the reasons we have gotten involved in so many wars. No one likes a nagging mother.

"a world made safe for democracy is a world in which no one dares to raise his voice for fear that mommy will put you away some place where you can be reeducated"

These guys winning the civil war isn't a personal affront to him. It is just another problem to be solved. That is a very masculine way of dealing with the world.

And it's notable that as the west has become more feminized, there's less actual problem-solving and a lot more useless and endless "talking" that doesn't actually accomplish shit.

Lots of talking because everything is personal and every solution some kind of salve to the parties' egos rather than a solution to the problem at hand.

I’d say it goes further back, to the Wilson Administration and the need to “make the world safe for democracy”. This vacillated for a bit afterward until the aftermath of World War II. It got worse after the end of the Cold War and the establishment no longer needed to be pragmatic.

I've been a bit out of the snooze cycle lately, but... the Democrats are worried about foreign money and influence in the US... like, all of a sudden? They want to mock and shame people and institutions that take Qatari money? Mmkay, American university systems including but not limited to Harvard... you go first. I suspect we'd see a lot less fewer white women in head scarves demanding we gas the Jews.

How did Mississippi fix its public schools? It retrained teachers and focused on phonics instruction:

This isn't limited to Mississippi. A lot of other school districts are going back to phonics because remote "learning" during COVID absolutely fucked the literacy rates of children across the country.

Every generation, some group of clever sillies with billionaire backing tries fixing what's never been broken--shit, phonics in public education goes back to the McGuffey Readers, for god's sake--and tries to implement some new system that they PROMISE will get everyone achieving at Einstein levels of academic prowess. Every single time, these people fucking fail with the new system and go back to what actually works, even though it means there will be kids who simply don't get it due to parental neglect or other socio-economic circumstances.

You can't cripple the entire classroom just to get the class retards on the same level as the kids who actually give a shit about school.

Society had been educating children for thousands of years. If there is one thing that human beings had perfected, it was teaching children how to read. If it hadn't, there wouldn't be a civilization. Then in the 20th Century leftist intellectuals came along and decided that education needed "fixed". "Fixing" it required throwing out everything that worked and replacing it with idiotic methods that didn't work. I mean no one ever made an academic career by saying something worked.

Educating children is not difficult much less impossible. You just have to choose to do it. And thanks to leftist intellectuals, our society has chosen not to do it for going on three generations now.

There was civilization long before universal literacy, or anything close to it, existed anywhere.
But generally, I agree. This isn't something that has never been solved or really needs new solutions.

    >"But if this is the Democratic Party's best shot at countering the many legal, ethical, and constitutional violations by the Trump administration, we're in for a very long four years.

Or - stay with me here - or it could be that there just aren't many of those issues at all?

    1. I don't know what *ethical* violations Trump is supposed to have done.

    2. Seems that so far his actions are passing constitution muster - at least the stuff that makes it to the USSC. The district courts? Not so much.

    3. The *legal* violations so far seem to be mostly paperwork fuck ups - like not having the deport-but-not-to-El-Salvador issue with the famed 'Maryland Man' (who wasn't from Maryland and was arrested while human trafficking but protected by the Biden administration that didn't provide any due process in the decision to let him in the country or to let an arrest human trafficker go free).
