Donald Trump | John Angelillo/UPI/Newscom
(John Angelillo/UPI/Newscom)

Donald Trump criminal trial comes to a close: During Tuesday's closing arguments in the New York criminal case against Donald Trump, the prosecutor, Joshua Steinglass, argued that the former president "had engaged in a fraud against the American people on the eve of the 2016 election by silencing a porn star's account of a sexual encounter with him," per The New York Times' write-up. Steinglass said that the cover-up, via purportedly falsified business records, of the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels "could very well be what got President Trump elected."

"We'll never know if this effort to hoodwink the American voter" was what resulted in Trump's win, Steinglass mused at one point.

This strains credulity, to say the least. This was not the only scandal Trump endured related to sexual impropriety and questions of character. The Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump made his infamous "grab 'em by the pussy" comments, had come to light prior to the 2016 election; I fail to buy that there's a significant contingent of voters out there who would have been concerned by the Stormy Daniels affair, yet fine with the Access Hollywood comments. This is a man whose ex-wife had accused him of rape back in 1990, after all, and who's had quite a few settlements with work underlings related to sexual misconduct claims.

But it will be up to the jurors to decide whether they believe Steinglass and whether Trump should be convicted of any of the 34 counts he's been brought up on. The hammed-up framing of it all, though unsurprising, lends a bit of credence to people's claims that this trial is politically motivated.

We have no idea how long the jurors will deliberate; a decision could come quickly or it could take many weeks. "Jurors will have the option of convicting Trump of all counts, acquitting him of all counts, or delivering a mixed verdict in which he is found guilty of some charges and not others," notes the Associated Press. "If they deadlock after several days of deliberations and are unable to reach a unanimous verdict, Judge Juan M. Merchan may declare a mistrial."

Related: A primer on the basics of the case.

Also: If convicted, how likely is it that Donald Trump would actually go to prison vs. being sentenced to probation, conditional discharge, or community service? Politico has some answers as to how this might play out.

Scenes from New York: On June 6, New York's legislative session will end. Lawmakers are currently considering, before they break for summer, voting on a "bill [that] would require companies that use single-use plastic packaging to find sustainable alternatives or pay a yet-to-be-determined fee, which would go toward covering the costs of municipalities' recycling and waste disposal. New York City, officials said, could reap as much as $150 million in costs," per The New York Times.

What about the blind hatred for Biden in these comments? Seems like a majority of the people here start the day with the “Fuck Joe Biden” prayer. Why is that warranted while anyone who says “Boo” about Trump is accused of Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Almost 80% of Americans think eating fast food is a luxury

A new survey says the skyrocketing prices have forced families to ditch the drive-thru, according to LendingTree. Seventy-eight percent of respondents told LendingTree they view fast food as a “luxury.”

Some here may just refer to fast food as the way they get their seven not-so-square meals a day.

As a lifelong Cubs fan, what happened to Bartman was kinda stupid. But it wasn't his fault. Moises Alou (left fielder) throwing a tantrum is what made all the other fans think Moises was going to make the catch but for Bartman's interference.

Moises wasn't going to make the catch. The brick wall in his way made sure of that (and his shit knees). Our SS, normally sure handed, then committed an error on a routine grounder to short and the rest, as they say, is history.

US Dems feel they’re doomed if Biden isn’t switched out

More than half of Democratic voters believe it is acceptable for the party to replace Joe Biden with another candidate in the November election, pollster Rasmussen reported.

This opinion is shared by 54% of Democratic respondents and 49% of likely voters overall. One major Democratic donor keeps a ‘running list of reasons why Biden could lose’, according to Politico.

    Is Biden ‘dead man’ walking?

Disagree with RT inasmuch that Biden isn’t really walking anymore.

I more and more think the Dems delayed their convention as late as possible so they can switch him out as late as possible.

I also expect it to backfire. They know Kamala is as bad a disaster, but it's her turn. Their left wing won't let them choose anyone close to moderate who might actually sound sane to the anti-Trump fence-sitters.

      1. R Mac   12 months ago

Except they screwed themselves because of Ohio law, so they’re going to actually nominate him virtually before the convention.

The deadline was passed by democrats in Ohio. DNC has violated the date 2 times. Trump 1 time. They've moved the date all 3 times.

I wish I could feel sorry for them, but I can’t. After trying to knock Trump off the ballot, it’s a delicious irony to see Biden get blocked from the ballot due to the Democratic Party being stupid and not following a law that’s been on the books since 2009 and was originally passed by Democrats.

              1. JesseAz   12 months ago

Multiple states are still trying to remove GOP candidates for congress through the courts. Fuck the democrats.

            3. Roberta   12 months ago

What's the big deal? A slate of electors will be submitted by the state committee with no president or VP nomination. Unless Ohio outlaws a slate of uncommitted electors from appearing on the ballot, the ballot will just say "Electors for [blank space] President and Vice President, Democrat".

          2. damikesc   12 months ago

"I saw a news report that Ohio may have a special session or special legislation to change that 90 days to 75 days just to squeak Biden in."

The usual NR bullshit claiming that this is, somehow, similar to what happened to Trump in ME and all is laughable.

It's not like OH's law was NEW. The date has been there for, what, 14 years now? DeWine's demand that they change the law for Biden has pretty well ended any forward movement on his career.

If Trump failed to meet NY's date requirement, is there a tiny sliver of a chance they'd do anything to help him?

      2. Red Rocks White Privilege   12 months ago

I more and more think the Dems delayed their convention as late as possible so they can switch him out as late as possible.

More like they've been waiting for a formal conviction on Trump to see who the GOP might nominate to take his place.

Technically, Trump's not the nominee yet; all he has are pledged delegates. So if he's looking at actual prison time, what could happen at the GOP convention is that potential nominees could put their names forward (keep in mind that DeSantis and Haley, for example, never formally ended their campaigns, they merely suspended them until the nominee is picked), and Trump could decide who gets his delegates.

I suspect this is why Haley came out recently saying she'll vote for Trump if he's the nominee--she doesn't want to burn that bridge with the party's voters, and she can present herself as a loyal party person rather than a NeverTrump stooge. If Trump does actually become the nominee, she can wrangle for something like Secretary of State if by some miracle the Cabal allows him to win.

I doubt she'd get them, though, because Trump will be more likely to support Vivek (who's basically been Trump's proxy at the debates) or DeSantis in that case.

        1. Gaear Grimsrud   12 months ago

Some polling indicates a small percentage of voters won't vote for Trump if he is convicted of a crime and the Democrats are desperate for a conviction in this case. Biden is planning some kind of White House address when the jury comes in. The Democrats won't make any major moves until they see the polling no matter the outcome. I'm not sure a conviction will actually change anything. Obviously most people are unimpressed with the indictment so I don't know why a conviction would move the needle. The other trials won't be over until after the election so if they don't get this one they're fucked.

          1. damikesc   12 months ago

Biden cannot readily claim he is not involved with this trial.

        2. CE   12 months ago

That is how I read it too and avoided commenting on “what did he say about who” and instead focused on why Russia would prefer to have a potus that is far less military adventuring and using crayons in neighboring countries.

                  1. Zeb   12 months ago

Presumably he meant Trump. Which may or may not be the case (though I expect Putin likely would prefer Trump as he is presumably less likely to continue indefinite support of Ukraine). But the claim was that Putin prefers Trump, not that Trump is controlled by Putin or anything like that.

                    1. JesseAz   12 months ago

Cmon zeb. You can’t be this naive. The Putin Puppet from the left has been going on for 7 years. Actual comments show Russia was mainly trying to drive up strife.

There is even intelligence showing they preferred Bernie and then Hillary, the latter having a long History of Russian appeasement as SoS.

                    2. Zeb   12 months ago

There is more to being a leftist than not liking trump. Noob didn't say Trump was a Putin puppet and I haven't seen any other comments from him to make me think he is any kind of leftist.
I agree Russia's aim has been to create strife and discord in the US. But you are talking about 2016. A few things have changed since then. I'm not certain that Putin would prefer Trump as president, but it seems plausible at least. In any case, who the fuck cares what Putin thinks? It just shouldn't be a major consideration for US politics.

Mysterious shooting outside Army Special Forces residence in North Carolina raises questions
Chechen power company subcontractor found shot in North Carolina near Army colonel’s home
    https://www.foxnews.com/us/mysterious-shooting-army-special-forces-residence-north-carolina-raises-questions

A mysterious shooting in North Carolina north of Fort Liberty, formerly Fort Bragg, not far from where some of America’s most elite U.S. Special Operations forces live and train is under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Division as well as local police. The shooting in Carthage, North Carolina occurred May 3 at 8:15 p.m. following a phone call about a suspected trespasser near a Special Forces soldier's property.

Two Chechen men who spoke broken English were found near the soldier's home. The family alleges the suspected intruder, 35-year-old Ramzan Daraev of Chicago was taking photos of their children. When confronted near a power line in a wooded part of the property, an altercation ensued and Daraev was shot several times at close range. A second man, Dzhankutov Adsalan, was in a vehicle some distance from the incident and was questioned by authorities and then released. The Moore County Sheriff's office is leading the investigation.

Made many really confusing tactical decisions, and was abrasive and uncommunicative with his subordinates. They nearly mutinied against him. He had the Army of the Cumberland besieged at Chattanooga for months, but he never took the time to actually build entrenchments and defensive works, so when the assault came, they just charged and broke through the center of his line.

High-Level Iranian Spy Ring Busted in Washington

      https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/iran-spy-ring-robert-malley-lee-smith

The Biden administration’s now-suspended Iran envoy Robert Malley helped to fund, support, and direct an Iranian intelligence operation designed to influence the United States and allied governments, according to a trove of purloined Iranian government emails. The emails, which were reported on by veteran Wall Street Journal correspondent Jay Solomon, writing in Semafor, and by Iran International, the London-based émigré opposition outlet which is the most widely read independent news source inside Iran, were published last week after being extensively verified over a period of several months by the two outlets. They showed that Malley had helped to infiltrate an Iranian agent of influence named Ariane Tabatabai into some of the most sensitive positions in the U.S. government—first at the State Department and now the Pentagon, where she has been serving as chief of staff for the assistant secretary of defense for special operations, Christopher Maier.

On Thursday, Maier told a congressional committee that the Defense Department is “actively looking into whether all law and policy was properly followed in granting my chief of staff top secret special compartmented information.”

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/05/21/even-rape-crisis-centres-are-in-hock-to-trans-activists/

This week, it was revealed that the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (ERCC) turned away rape survivors who were suspected of disagreeing with its trans-activist chief executive’s views on gender. Women who wrote to the ERCC to ask about women-only services were classed as bigots and had their communications stored in a folder called ‘Hate emails’.

Adams’s ordeal began when she tried to advocate for traumatised service users who wanted reassurance that they would be seen by a female counsellor. A female colleague, referred to as AB in the ruling, identified as nonbinary and chose a name that would be widely understood as male. This prompted one service user to ask Adams whether ERCC staff were all female because ‘as a woman, I would be very uncomfortable talking with a man’. Adams then emailed her manager for advice.

In a trail of emails, Adams pointed out that ‘people who have been abused by men… are very attuned to be triggered by the presence of male bodies’. If the biological sex of the ERCC’s case workers were to be disclosed, then the ‘barriers to [women] accessing support would be reduced’, she explained. But her lengthy and considered email asking for guidance was referred to by AB as ‘violent and humiliating’.

    1. Medulla Oblongata   12 months ago

      But wait! There's more!

It has long been clear that Wadhwa has put his trans activism ahead of the needs of the women the ERCC is supposed to serve. Back in 2021, he appeared on the popular podcast, The Guilty Feminist, to talk about his career. When asked about whether women should be entitled to access rape-crisis centres that are free of men, he said:

‘Sexual violence happens to bigoted people as well. And so, you know, it is not a discerning crime… These spaces are also for you. But if you bring unacceptable beliefs that are discriminatory in nature, we will begin to work with you on your journey of recovery from trauma. But please also expect to be challenged on your prejudices.’

There could hardly be a more glaring example of Wadhwa’s lack of respect for women’s boundaries. This is a man – biologically and legally (he does not have a gender-recognition certificate) – who thinks he has a right not only to run a women’s shelter, but also to ‘re-educate’ and chastise the women who come there seeking help.

As it happens, there is a service in Scotland for those supposedly ‘bigoted’ survivors of sexual violence who need support. In 2022, in part as a response to the takeover of the women’s sector by trans activists, JK Rowling funded a single-sex centre called Beira’s Place. But workers at the ERCC were barred from referring women there or even advising them of its existence.

Transgender Runner Cruises To Washington Girls State Track Title, But This Kind Of Thing Never Happens, Right?

In Washington & Oregon this past week, the fastest "girl" in the each state has been a boy.

It doesn't take a math whiz to realize that that's a three-second lead in a race that takes under a minute.

        https://www.outkick.com/sports/transgender-runner-cruises-washington-girls-state-track-title

      https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/05/29/ricky-gervais-has-every-right-to-ridicule-trans-activists/

The premise of the routine is that a trans activist becomes increasingly irate the more his belief that women can have penises is questioned. When a woman raises concerns about sharing the female toilets with a transwoman, asking ‘What if he rapes me?’, the trans activist becomes furious. ‘What if she rapes you, you fucking TERF whore!’, he screams.

The joke here is obviously that these gender zealots care more about a bloke with a penis being ‘misgendered’ than about the safety of a woman having to share loos with the penis-owning stranger.

Worse still, in real life, the female victims of assault by trans-identifying men really have been compelled to recognise the ‘gender identity’ of their attackers. In 2018, a woman was required by a court of law to pretend her male attacker is actually a woman. In 2022, mainstream news outlets, including the BBC, edited the direct testimony of a rape survivor to avoid the unforgivable sin of ‘misgendering’ her rapist.

Just look at the ordeal Roz Adams has faced. Earlier this month, an employment tribunal concluded that she was unlawfully discriminated against and unfairly dismissed from her job at the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. Why? Because she believed that the victims of rape – who often understandably find being in close proximity with men traumatic – had the right to know and choose the sex of the staff member providing them with care. The tribunal concluded that management’s treatment of Adams amounted to a ‘heresy hunt’.

Just this week, it was reported that the NHS is facing legal action after 26 female nurses complained about being forced to share the women’s changing room with a trans-identified male. One of the nurses in question, who was the victim of sexual abuse as a child, spoke of how ‘petrified’ she was to have this male in her space. Not least as the man repeatedly asked her when she planned on getting changed. The HR manager responded to these concerns by telling the female nurses they must ‘be more inclusive’, ‘broaden their mindset’ and ‘be educated and attend training’.

But its totes OK to do that to a human child:

Think Twice Before You Cut Off Your Dog's Balls
Tinkering with the body of any animal has consequences. While neutering has long been the salvation of domestication in the U.S. (versus European countries that view the procedure as cruel and inhumane), it's time to consider other options for sterilization. In the end, only you can decide what's best for your dog.
    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/think-twice-before-you-cu_b_8002116

...Early observations of castrated men showed side-effects like reduced bone density, muscle mass, and body hair development. Many of the men were said to assume more serene dispositions but also claimed to have developed depression.

I, personally, have given up purchasing Rolls Royce automobiles this year.

    1. Randy Sax   12 months ago

No one needs to buy clothes.

All t-shirts are free. You get them from work, from clubs, from cannons at sporting events. Jeans last for years, once you have a couple pairs you don't need anymore. All underwear and socks come from your aunt/grandma at Xmas. Companies usually give you a large voucher to buy work boots. Suits you can rent. You can "borrow" a tie or two from your dad and when you move out to college never give them back.

      1. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

I have to wear a suit several times a week, sometimes more. Rent would get pretty expensive.

      1. mad.casual   12 months ago

Seriously? Do you not know any women? That one was the most hilarious because it wasn't actually even remotely close to any sort of 'no-buy year' pledge.

Retail therapy is when you buy stuff to make yourself feel better. More critically, in perfectly feminine fashion (aside from invoking the retail therapy euphemism) she didn't agree not to spend money, just to avoid setting fire to money as fast as she possibly can. At best, in practice it will translate into she'll just say she "needs" whatever it is before buying it rather than regarding it as a luxury that she has to buy.

If she's not already spending other people's money, you can practically hear the extra 150-200 lbs. and dozen or so cats incoming.

        1. JesseAz   12 months ago

The now-convicted pedophile pleaded guilty to sexual communication with a child, attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, and facilitating the commission of a child sex offense .

He knew the boy was 14 after meeting him on the 'ROMEO' app. "Almost immediately after the conversation started, the defendant sent Jacob a photograph of his penis," according to court documents. He was handed a 14-month sentence suspended for two years, but was placed on the Sex Offender Registry.

Von der Leyen Vows To ‘Vaccinate’ EU Population Against ‘Wrongthink’
People in society who hold views that contradict the globalist narrative must have their minds “inoculated” against “wrongthink” according to European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen
Speaking at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit earlier this month, von der Leyen explained that “research has shown that pre-bunking is more successful than de-bunking. Pre-bunking is the opposite of de-bunking. In short, prevention is preferable to cure.
“Think of information manipulation as a virus. Instead of treating an infection once it has taken hold, that’s the de-bunking, it is better to vaccinate, so that our body is inoculated. Pre-bunking is the same approach.”

      Pre-bunking

This could not be more hilariously lost in translation.

Bunk – n. as derived from Bunkum, synonymous with nonsense or foolish talk.

Use it in a sentence: Debunking rather obviously means removing bunk, or nonsense, implicitly after the fact; while pre-bunking would, via several contextual clues, suggest you intend to flood the issue with your own nonsense and idiocy up front.

My 10 yr. old would recognize these people as utter morons and refuse to follow them.

The "they" is an especially nice touch. None of that muddled, borderline hypocritical, "We will learn to live with it even if we have to suffer hardship, some more than others, that might seem like use of force to people not involved". Just straight up "I like to rape."

The hammed-up framing of it all, though unsurprising, lends a bit of credence to people's claims that this trial is politically motivated.

For a damaging story about a Democrat to be true, DNA must be found on a blue dress. It’s not enough to have a witness and a victim.
It’s not enough to have a computer, a cache of validated emails, thousands of affidavits signed under the threat of perjury. There must be actual DNA, videotaped evidence. If the bad guy is a Democrat, there must be Blue Dress Proof.

For a damaging story about a Republican to be true, nothing has to be true at all.
Third-hand hearsay about hookers and pee, a smile on a face, or a sarcastic tweet or phrase taken out of context can make even the most absurd conclusion be portrayed as fact and conveyed as truth in perpetuity.
If the bad guy is a Republican, no proof is needed.

    ***START QUOTE***

This might be the easiest Ethics Dunce pick ever; at least I am certain that there couldn’t have been an easier one. When I heard which ever Democratic Party hack it was introduce Robert DeNiro as a featured speaker for the Biden campaign’s Trump Hate presser outside the Manhattan courthouse where this kangaroo kaper is inching to a conclusion, I thought, “No! They can’t be this crude, obvious and stupid. They just can’t be.”

    They were, and they are.

DeNiro isn’t a shrewd political analyst or a serious activist with any identifiable acumen or credibility. He’s not even as smart as the thugs he plays on screen. His now familiar rhetoric, as he has engaged in vulgar ad hominem attacks on the former President in mostly Hollywood Left gatherings for years now, wouldn’t have been acceptable in any respectable political setting before and is only acceptable now to the perhaps terminally Trump-Deranged.

DeNiro’s rants are ugly and simple-minded. Even a rudimentary understanding of the Cognitive Dissonance Scale should have led Biden’s campaign to the conclusion that associating with DeNiro makes the campaign look as repugnant as he is.

The actor doesn’t (and yesterday didn’t) make arguments; all he does is spew hate and derision. That’s all he can do: He’s not very bright, and is barely educated. He’s been a full-time actor since he was a teenager: this isn’t Sam Shepard we’re talking about here, Jimmy Stewart (A Princeton grad), or even John Wayne. DeNiro’s only claim to being a useful Biden supporter is that he’s a famous actor, and one who mostly plays killers, crooks and assholes. Brilliant.

Who is DeNiro going to convince who isn’t already an anti-Trump fanatic? On the other hand, the Biden campaign using him as if he’s a Daniel Patrick Moynihan (credible because he was a thoughtful and courageous intellectual) or a Tom Hanks (credible because he’s an ostentatiously patriotic and non-partisan artist) reeks of panic and desperation. That the Biden campaign would even consider such a bone-headed spokesperson reinforces the conclusion that there are no levels low enough that it will not stoop to in its efforts to stop Donald Trump.

Morons. Unethical morons, and those are the worst kind.

MLB integrates Negro League statistics into all-time record book with Josh Gibson now career batting average leader

    1. tracerv   12 months ago

Where does it stop? It fucking NEVER stops.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   12 months ago

To be fair, the NBA includes ABA stats and the NFL includes AFL stats in career numbers. The main issue I have with including the Negro League numbers is how accurate the recorded stats really are. I remember journo claims from 30 years ago that Josh Gibson hit 65 homers in one season and was the real HR king of the 20s and 30s, not Babe Ruth. However, his official numbers on Baseball Reference don't show him with more than 20 a season, and a career total of 166.

I suspect the real reason those numbers were included was to deliberately knock Ty Cobb off of the career batting average hill, even though Cobb was a more consistent hitter for far more seasons that Gibson, whose average is largely skewed by 5 seasons over .385 in a 13-year career.

        1. tracerv   12 months ago

Not really the same. The ABA was merged into the NBA. Same as AFL into NFL.

Noam Chomsky has gone on record as supporting Joe Biden, the Democrats’ presidential candidate in the forthcoming November election. Chomsky, who has described himself as a libertarian socialist and anarcho-syndicalist in the past, said that “the failure to vote for Biden in a swing state amounts to voting for Trump” akin to voting for the “destruction of organized human life on Earth, the sharp increase in the threat of nuclear war… stacking the judiciary with young lawyers who will make it impossible to do anything for a generation.” He said “With a Biden presidency, there would be, if not a strongly sympathetic administration, at least one that can be reached, can be pressured.”

      2. Rick James   12 months ago

        There are two groups:

One thinks a strategic and reluctant vote for Biden is the proper choice because Orange Man represents an existential threat and while Biden may not really be a great choice, he represents enfeeblement of the office and therefore is the safest bet in holding back the expansion of the administrative state.

The other group is ideologically committed to the elimination of the Nation State, the revolutionary overthrow of the Republic, the destruction of the Nuclear family, the end of Western Imperialism and by result, wishes to see the collapse of American Hegemony and the evisceration of Capitalism. The vote for Biden represents the most likely vessel which can be pressured and therefore is a useful tool to that ideological aim.

One of those groups is wrong. I’ll let y’all Princes of Maine figure out which one it is.

    Popular with who?

Is America Ready for ‘Degrowth Communism’?
Kohei Saito’s theory of how to solve climate change is economically dubious and politically impossible. Why is it so popular?
    https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/05/kohei-saito-degrowth-communism/678481/

The crazy idea is “degrowth communism,” a combination of two concepts that are contentious on their own. Degrowth holds that there will always be a correlation between economic output and carbon emissions, so the best way to fight climate change is for wealthy nations to cut back on consumption and reduce the “material throughput” that creates demand for energy and drives GDP.

          1. Zeb   12 months ago

I don't think I'd call it good intentions with the level of disregard they had for the individual. I do think that they thought, at least for a while, that they had a chance of in some sense beating the capitalist west.

            1. sarcasmic   12 months ago

I don’t think I’d call it good intentions with the level of disregard they had for the individual.

They would say you have bad intentions because of your disregard for the collective.

I think the biggest problem with collectivists is that they cannot imagine people cooperating without a gun at their back. So they think individualists want everyone to be an island, not understanding that the core of individualism is cooperation of the voluntary kind.

As far as beating capitalism economically I don't think they really believed they had a chance. The honest ones would acknowledge that the tradeoff with egalitarianism is that for everyone to be equal they must be equally poor.

              1. mtrueman   12 months ago

Both capitalists and communists have agreed on the importance of economic growth - ever increasing production, ever increasing energy consumption. Where they differ is how the surplus is to be divided.

                1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

Capitalists don't hold fealty to a single party like communist do.

                  1. mtrueman   12 months ago

Capitalists and communists both hold fealty to the notion of economic growth. Where they differ is how to divide the spoils.

There are plenty of examples of autocratic capitalists. Pinochet of Chile is a good example.

                2. Zeb   12 months ago

Well, that's how a communist would describe the difference. There is no surplus in capitalism because there is no a priori "correct" amount to produce. And with property rights, there is nothing to be divided. It all belongs to someone.

                  1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

                    ""It all belongs to someone."

Yeah, the party. But it will have "the people's" in front of it.

                  2. mtrueman   12 months ago

"Well, that’s how a communist would describe the difference."

True. A capitalist would use 'profit' instead of surplus. It's owners who should determine how profits are allocated rather than society.

                    1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

""True. A capitalist would use ‘profit’ instead of surplus.""

                      So incorrect it's funny.

                3. sarcasmic   12 months ago

Surplus implies that there is a correct amount that has been exceeded.

                  1. mtrueman   12 months ago

A sufficient amount is probably more accurate. Like profits, once costs have been covered, anything left over is extra. The struggle between capitalists and communists is who determines how this extra is divided up. Both capitalists and communists aim for increasing production and energy consumption.

                    1. sarcasmic   12 months ago

Now define sufficient. Who defines it? I might think five kinds of hot sauces are necessary. Someone else might think one jar is too many.

Who decides? What makes them special?

                    2. mtrueman   12 months ago

                      "Who defines it?"

Under capitalism it's the owners. Under socialism it's society. That's the difference between the systems. Where they both agree is the imperative to economic growth.

Does your medical insurance cover rolfing? With private medical insurance, the decision lies with the company owners. With socialized medical insurance, it's a collective body representing society as a whole.

One other difference is that under capitalism there isn't much point in pursuing any enterprise unless there are profits seen at the end of the tunnel. Under socialism, such activities like research into pure science or national defense, where there is no profit are quite common.

              2. Zeb   12 months ago

I think the biggest problem with collectivists is that they cannot imagine people cooperating without a gun at their back.

One of them anyway. But it's a good point. One of the great practical reasons to support individual freedom is that people free to act in their own interests cooperate more effectively and are better at finding the things to work on that bring the most value.

Bizarre from Dawkins, who wrote a book called ‘The God Delusion’ claiming religion was a deeply malevolent, dividing force in the world.

Now he’s calling himself a ‘cultural Christian’? Find it odd to use religion to extend your secular political points.

It’s not just the evangelism, but the conviction that people who walk in darkness must be brought into light, that marks humanists as so irredeemably Christian.

That's probably why they were called 'miracles' and were treated in the stories as proof of a reality breaking divine force.

It's more likely they don't want to be dragged down by the US as it circles round the drain. That would explain the BRICS initiative which is neither a military threat nor can it be countered by increases in military spending.

It's possible the pier was sabotaged by Israel. Israel has taken pains to shut down the land crossings, and a working pier delivering food to Gaza would certainly interfere with Israel's plans to starve the Palestinians. Incidents like the sinking of the Liberty show us that the US is willing to whitewash Israeli actions against the US in times of trouble. Is it possible that Biden ordered the building of the pier but ordered the navy to do nothing if Israel tried to destroy it? It sounds crazy but it seems entirely plausible to me.

Either way, the incident doesn't reflect well on the US navy, which is responsible for the pier and its operation. Add their inability to secure the Red Sea from Yemen, the poorest nation in Asia, a nation that doesn't even have a navy. Yet it has recently expanded their range of operations and have taken to targeting shipping in the Mediterranean Sea.

Starvation is cheaper than American bombs. Maybe they should release the hostages.

      1. mtrueman   12 months ago

"Maybe they should release the hostages."

Would that make a difference? If the Palestinians are starving, their hostages are probably suffering along side them. If the Israelis are willing to starve the Palestinians, they would also starve anyone who depends on the Palestinians for their food into the bargain.

Hamas seem firm in their insistence that any hostage exchange is tied up with a ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops.

              1. mtrueman   12 months ago

The hostages are pawns here. It's not unlikely that the Palestinians value their lives more than the Israelis do. If you haven't read about Israel's Hannibal Directive, you have a look. Basically, killing hostages is kosher.

                1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

                  “‘The hostages are pawns here.”

Then releasing them would make a difference to their captors because they would lose their pawns. And them being killed is kosher if Hamas does it. Which by the way would make it halal.

Releasing them would make a difference to the hostages because they would be free.

If you think the Hannible directive is bad, then you should support the unconditional release of hostages now for their safety.

But I’m getting the impression you don’t really care about the hostages.

"But I’m getting the impression you don’t really care about the hostages."

I didn't mean to give that impression. I hope they are safe and healthy and cared for. I hope that whatever role they play in this drama will lead to greater peace and prosperity in the region.

"then you should support the unconditional release of hostages now for their safety."

I don't think any unconditional release of hostages is in the cards. At best we'll see a repeat of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange of November last year. Let's think about this for a moment. Suppose in the final months of WWII Germany decided to unconditionally release all of its prisoners of war. Would that have made any difference in the Allies determination to continue on fighting? I say no. If you disagree, make your case.

"They can release them right now and the hostages’ nightmare will be over."

You'd have a point if the personal welfare and feelings of the hostages were first and foremost in the minds of the resistance. I think the events of Oct. 7 showed us otherwise.

"and you think Hamas should be rewarded."

I want justice for the Palestinians. End the occupation, apartheid etc. As for Hamas, they are already reaping benefits from Israel's actions. That's been true for decades. It was true when Netanyahu decided to let Hamas pass, unopposed, through the billion dollar security fence on Oct 7. It's true today as more and more revenge seeking Palestinians join their ranks and take up arms.

“Are you saying food can’t come in via Egypt?”

Israel is the occupying power. It’s Israel that is bombing Gaza and has sent in the military. It’s Israel that is starving the people of Gaza. Expecting Egypt to shoulder Israel’s responsibility as an occupier is just as silly as the expectation that saying “release the hostages now” will have any effect. It’s emotionally satisfying, I understand, but this is the real world we are talking about and states and governments. They aren’t moved by your virtue signalling.

Israel wasn't the occupying power and had pulled out of Gaza years ago until your psychotic jihadis decided to go on a rape and murder spree and declared war on Israel.

But nevertheless, that doesn't have anything to do with the Egyptian border, you fucking liar. There is absolutely nothing to stop aid trucks from crossing on the Egyptian border, and Egypt doesn't even have "to shoulder Israel’s responsibility".

You're so twisted with hate that your arguments are utterly nonsensical.

"There is absolutely nothing to stop aid trucks from crossing on the Egyptian border,"

What about the IDF? Israel has determined to starve Palestine. Wouldn't they take action against trucks full of food and supplies destined for Palestinians, the very people they are attempting to exterminate? You haven't thought this through, but again immediately turn to your shrill hysteria, as if that's going to impress me. I won't. Let's face it. I'm smarter than you and know more than you. More shrill hysteria. You have to try harder. So besides the Israeli government and the IDF, what other genocidal terror organizations do you look to? How about Biden and his tales of climate change pier damage? You had no trouble at all swallowing that one.

"Hamas seem firm in their insistence that any hostage exchange is tied up with a ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops."

Then the death of their people is on their heads. You dont get to cross a countries border, slaughter its citizens, and you get a ceasefire because you took hostages too. And you also dont get to make terms at all.

The terms are release the hostages and surrender for execution, or watch your people die. They can choose what they want.

The only thing more dangerous to the palestinian people than an IDF soldier is Hamas

          1. mtrueman   12 months ago

"Then the death of their people is on their heads. "

I'd say it's on the heads of those who close the checkpoints and deny entry of food and supplies. I understand the Israelis are loathe to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions, ie that Israel can starve the Palestinians but it's Hamas that's killing them. You've evidently fallen for this claptrap.

"The terms are release the hostages and surrender for execution, or watch your people die. "

I doubt this is in the cards. We're either going to see a repeat of something like last November, ie ceasefire and prisoner exchange, or hostages perishing one by one until there aren't any left. My preference is for the former, though I understand many hardliners are willing to see the latter come to pass.

            1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

                "Release the hostages now."

I just don't see that happening, do you? I don't think the hostage will be released without a ceasefire and prisoner exchange. That seems to be the answer if you want their safe return. Your repeated demands to unconditionally release the hostages will probably result in their continued captivity and death.

There's still a cost. You haven't taken all the lives and treasure that went into freeing them. I prefer a negotiated settlement that will see a prisoner exchange and a ceasefire and I hope a brighter future for all.

                    3. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

“”and I hope a brighter future for all.””

You’re not recognizing the cost of emboldening a terrorist organization.

Hamas wants Israel extinguished, they have said so. That's what from the river to the sea means. Anything that benefits Hamas will be at the expense of Israelis in the future.

Btw, like you would say, your preferences are irrelevant. Israel is not going to stop until they destroy everything they can related to Hamas. Sure, they might kill some hostages. So the only way to ensure the hostages’ safety is for them to be released immediately.

                    4. mtrueman   12 months ago

"You’re not recognizing the cost of emboldening a terrorist organization. "

I am. It's you who apparently don't appreciate the fact that Israel's atrocities only serve to embolden the resistance. That's why Hamas is growing in strength and influence. Say, for example, that somebody kills your family while they sleep. Are you inclined to seek revenge, or realize the righteousness of their killers?

                      "Hamas wants Israel extinguished"

A laudable goal. We shouldn't shed any tears over the demise of an apartheid ethno state governed by religious bigots. Good riddance.

"Anything that benefits Hamas will be at the expense of Israelis in the future. "

The policies of Netanyahu have been benefiting Hamas for decades. Only now you are realizing this? I've said it many times, you need to expand your sources. Biden, Netanyahu and the media will lie, obscure and distort the truth. So will Hamas and any other participant in the conflict. That's the nature of war. But getting a more complete picture will be better than only relying on the lies of one side.

"Israel is not going to stop until they destroy everything they can related to Hamas."

Maybe. I can't predict the future. Israel and Hamas are not the only actors in this drama.

"Sure, they might kill some hostages. So the only way to ensure the hostages’ safety is for them to be released immediately."

The Palestinians have other fish to fry. The prisoner exchange is only one of the issues they bring to the table. They also want an end to occupation and a ceasefire. Simply giving up the hostages unconditionally wouldn't accomplish other Palestinian goals - like ending the occupation.

Hamas did voluntarily give up some of their hostages without a quid pro quo, I believe. They were Russians. Russia isn't occupying Gaza or dropping bombs on Gaza.

                2. damikesc   12 months ago

Hamas should release the hostages now.

You’ve had multiple chances to say that and, yet, you will not.

Ergo, you do not support it.

You think taking hostages is perfectly acceptable.

I think "collateral damage" is even MORE acceptable.

"Hamas should release the hostages now."

I don't think that will happen without some deal as we saw in November. Can I ask your feelings about that deal? You realize that Israel had to sit down at the negotiating table and iron out a deal which entailed compromise. Was that a mistake? Should Israel have refused to compromise and left the hostages? You don't appear to have thought this through.

"Ergo, you do not support it."

My personal feelings are not important. Events will unfold regardless.

And you continue to believe that the failure of the pier is due to 'climate change' or whatever excuse Biden is telling you. Let's face it: my made up shit is better than the made up shit you like to parrot.

"my made up shit is better than the made up shit you like to parrot."

              No. Not really.
And BG didn't "parrot" anything. He just called your fantasies bullshit.

You've had chances to put up, you know, evidence for your claim.

You have, as expected, been unable to do so.

US builds a shitty pier, Palestinians raid/loot aid trucks...

Hamas-media/mtruman: "certainly the JOOS are to blame..."

      1. mtrueman   12 months ago

Israel has shut down all land aid delivery points. I don't find it too much of a stretch to shut down the pier. If you want to starve the population of a concentration camp, shutting down the routes, all of them, whereby food can be delivered, is a no brainer.

        1. Mike Parsons   12 months ago

"If you want to starve the population of a concentration camp"

Sounds unrelated, where is there a concentration camp?

          1. mtrueman   12 months ago

            "Sounds unrelated,"

You have to widen your range of sources. Until you wean yourself away from the western media you rely on, it will 'sound unrelated.'

            1. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

              Where's this concentration camp?

              1. mtrueman   12 months ago

You mean Biden or Netanyahu hasn't told you? I'm not surprised. As I mentioned earlier, if you want to stay informed, widen your sources.

                1. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

No, anti-Semite, they haven't. Now where do YOU think a concentration camp is?

Biden is not on this thread and you're the one that brought his name up. So yes, please tell us what you are talking about.

""I don’t find it too much of a stretch to shut down the pier. ""

You have no evidence that it was shut down and there is plenty of evidence that it was rough seas.

So you think the Palestine territories are the concentration camp.
                      Funny.

                    4. mtrueman   12 months ago

What's the fuss? You favor starving the Palestinians. You favor them being confined to a concentration camp. Yet you deny all these wonderful things. Not taking 'yes' for an answer. There's just no pleasing some people.

    5. damikesc   12 months ago

"It’s possible the pier was sabotaged by Israel."

It also could have been sabotaged by the Jordanians in Gaza, who had spent time stealing every ounce of aid sent to their people, because they are sub-human grifters.

"Either way, the incident doesn’t reflect well on the US navy, which is responsible for the pier and its operation. Add their inability to secure the Red Sea from Yemen, the poorest nation in Asia, a nation that doesn’t even have a navy. Yet it has recently expanded their range of operations and have taken to targeting shipping in the Mediterranean Sea."

Just let the Gaza Jordanians starve. No loss to society at all.

      1. mtrueman   12 months ago

"It also could have been sabotaged by the Jordanians in Gaza,"

It's possible, but I don't think the Americans would have let it happen, and then gone on to blame climate change.

"Just let the Gaza Jordanians starve. "

That appears to be the plan. What's a few million Arabs compared to a seat on the Israeli lobby gravy train?

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

""and then gone on to blame climate change.""

What is this blame climate change you speak of?

High waves can screw up a hastily made pier. High waves happen and have nothing to do with climate change. It would not be the first operation to get trashed by high waves.

          1. mtrueman   12 months ago

"High waves happen and have nothing to do with climate change."

You're wasting your time. Why don't you tell that to your president? If your whitewashing is whiter than his, he might even listen.

            1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

              Oh never mind

            2. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

I searched what happened to the pier in Israel in Google.

Everything I saw said something to the effect of rough seas.

You got a source for your belief?

              1. mtrueman   12 months ago

I’m just skeptical of everything you see. In times of war, truth is the first casualty etc. I’m skeptical of google, Israel, and even piers. I’m not saying Israel is responsible for the failure of the pier. I’m saying they could be and the president, the media and Israel wouldn’t be in a hurry to set us straight.

                1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

You don't seem skeptical of Hamas though.

                  1. mtrueman   12 months ago

But I am. They are a fundamentalist, conservative Islamist organization the Israelis have been assisting since they arrived on the scene. They teamed up with the US, Saudi, Israel and al Qaeda to overthrow the secular government of Syria. I am more than skeptical of them, and you should be too. One area I have in common is their anti-colonial anti-imperial stance. Perhaps you are willing to forgive them for their conservatism and collaboration with Israel, but will never forgive their resistance to Israel. I wouldn't be surprised if what I find detestable in Hamas, you find admirable, and vice versa. What are your thoughts on this fascinating subject? Care to share them with the rest of us?

        2. damikesc   12 months ago

Arab states do not give a shit. Why should I?

And you still are unable to prove anything in your asinine claims.

          1. mtrueman   12 months ago

            "Why should I?"

Why shouldn't you? Since when have Arab states been your moral compass?

Which claims would you like me to prove?

            1. damikesc   12 months ago

That Israel had any part in the inevitable fuck-up of the idiotic tier that puddin' brain Biden decided to try and make happen.

And I will treat people the way their own people wish to treat them. Seems fair.

              1. mtrueman   12 months ago

                This was my comment:

“It’s possible the pier was sabotaged by Israel.”

You may think it’s impossible, but it is more in line with speculation than any claim that I can back up with evidence. If you have any evidence to show that Israel played no part in the failure of the pier, or that someone else did, or even climate change, then you should share it. I’d really appreciate that.

                1. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

"", but it is more in line with speculation than any claim that I can back up with evidence. "'

                  In other words, bullshit.

"" If you have any evidence to show that Israel played no part ""

No one has to prove the negative. You have to prove your claim. I say it was rough seas that screwed up the pier. I can point to a lot of other things that agree. You can't point to anything that agree with you.

                  1. Mike Parsons   12 months ago

for mTrueman, "but what about the JOOS?!" is always sufficient proof

                    1. mtrueman   12 months ago

Oy vey! Like it or not, Jews and Israelis are involved in the conflict.

                  2. mtrueman   12 months ago

"You have to prove your claim."

                    What claim?

"I say it was rough seas that screwed up the pier. "

You are simply parroting what you've heard on TV. What Biden and the media want you to believe. In times of trouble you should be more skeptical. Question authority. Can you dig it?

Two things about the Trump case Jury Instructions…
    ———————————————
First, why is the jury not informed of basic jury instructions regarding the law related to the charges before opening arguments? This would include such things as “intent” vs. “motive”, that “defraud” need not include a pecuniary factor, that “defraud” need not be targeted at a specific person or organization, and that “business records” include even private records unrelated to what is traditionally thought of as a business (an entity offering goods or services to another in exchange for consideration – usually money).

Obviously final jury instructions would include more and might even alter the preliminary instructions (such as if charges are dropped during the trial as happened in a trial I was a juror on).

This would allow jurors to focus on relevant aspects of testimony rather than discovering, after weeks of testimony, that there was a “legal twist” they were unaware of and therefore may not have paid adequate attention to or made enough notes on during testimony.

I know that in one trial I was a juror on this would have been very, very helpful.
    ———————————————
Second, why is the jury not provided with a written copy of the jury instructions while in deliberations?

It’s odd that of the 5.3 billion people globally with internet access, only 18 of those (the very ones that need to apply them) can’t get a written copy.

As a juror, we have gotten one written copy for the jury room during deliberations and they have been very helpful – even critical – in reaching the correct decision.

There are some fairly fine points of law in this “hush money” trial and careful application of the instructions is (or should be!) critical to a juror’s decision. These fine points can be just a few words in what was (expected) to be one hour recitation of the instructions by the judge – and probably every juror (even those that took notes) came away with a slightly different view of those points.

Sure, the instructions say that the judge will be “happy” to read the instructions again as many times as the jury requests it – but realistically the overhead (getting the lawyers back into court, the act of reading them, etc), and other juror’s desire to “get the trial over” would discourage jurors from making such requests.

Honestly, from what I know about this case, upon discovering that I couldn’t refer to a written copy of the jury instructions and discuss them with other jurors (rather than each juror relying on “recollection of other jurors” – which, specifically, they are instructed NOT to do) I would have no ethical choice but request to excused from the jury at this late date as it’s unlikely I could render any verdict other than “Not Guilty” – and that simply because the “law” that I had a ministerial duty to apply was, from a practical standpoint, “unavailable” to me.

    1. Chumby   12 months ago

Why? Because this trial is like the Obamacare legislation.

We have to pass the law find him guilty to find out what is in the law the reason for his guilt.

      1. BadLib   12 months ago

My best guess is that both practices (delaying jury instructions until the end and not allowing jurors to have a written copy of those instructions) are the norm in this court and not unique to this Trump trial.

        1. Chumby   12 months ago

My guess is that bigfoot told the judge that he would point HAARP at the judges family members if standard protocol were followed.
