Trump's cash troubles: Donald Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, will most likely be approved today to be publicly traded on Wall Street (stock ticker: DJT). "Shareholders of Digital World Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded shell company that is looking to merge with the former president's media business," will be voting on the deal, which would possibly "open the door for Trump Media & Technology Group, whose flagship product is the social networking site Truth Social, to soon begin trading on the Nasdaq stock market in Digital World's place," per the Associated Press.

If the deal goes through, Trump's payout could be over $3 billion, but the infusion of cash would not hit soon enough to help him with campaign expenses or to settle up his legal debts in time—one of the terms of the deal involves a "lock up agreement" that would prevent the selling of shares that were recently issued for six months.

"Trump could try to obtain a waiver from that rule, but even then he wouldn't be able to sell more than a small fraction of his stake at any given time—up to 1 percent of the outstanding shares every quarter," reports Politico. "And if he eventually does unload a large quantity of stock, the ramifications could be significant, according to investors and others watching the deal." Since Trump's personal brand is so closely tied to the company's value, it's important that he tread lightly so as to not spook investors.

But Trump has roughly $450 million in civil penalties he must pay, so he's still in a bind; this week, news broke that he was having trouble securing a bond, so the New York state attorney general's office may have to start seizing his assets "unless the court agrees to halt the judgment while the former president appeals the verdict," reports Politico.

As for his campaign funds, "Trump is beginning the 2024 general election at a financial disadvantage, with some donors still skittish about chipping in," reports the Wall Street Journal. "Fundraising reports filed late Wednesday showed Biden's campaign and allied committees had more than $155 million on hand at the end of February, compared with $74.4 million for Trump's campaign and allied committees. The former president's total, which doesn't include one additional committee that won't report until next month, has been drained by more than $53 million in legal-related expenses since early 2023."

Scenes from New York: I regret that I must bring you more squatter news: Though the crime is still being investigated, squatters in an apartment on East 31st St. appear to be responsible for killing 52-year-old Nadia Vitel, a woman who was attempting to clean out her deceased mother's Manhattan apartment.

"We believe that some squatters took the apartment over and this woman came home…and walked in on the squatters that were there," said New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. It's yet another squatters story in the news, bringing attention to how big of a problem this is and how lopsided the state's laws are.

"In New York, if you call the police on someone who moved into your home without permission, if they claim to be a tenant, they can't be arrested for trespassing," reports ABC7 news. "Instead, the owner has to take them to court to evict them. The average eviction in the city takes about two years to complete." The issue is, squatters are entitled to such protections in New York after residing in a property for 30 days—something a state assemblyman from Long Island is looking to change, following the news story from earlier in the week of the Queens woman who was arrested after trying to get squatters out of the home she owns.

QUICK HITS

  • A month ago, Spotify rolled out a feature that allows people to see the size of each podcast's audience. Joe Rogan's show is even more massive—14.5 million listeners—than most people realized, three times more than the next most popular podcast. "His Spotify following is still smaller than his subscribers on YouTube, which come in at 16.4 million, and his personal Instagram followers, which are at 18.9 million," reports Bloomberg.
  • "Why do men dominate chess?" asks Quillette. Article includes a very cute quote from Wilhelm Steinitz—the reigning chess champion for a chunk of the 19th century—who advocated for more women in chess (contra lady-badmouther Bobby Fischer): "If we engage the queens of our hearts for the queens of our boards, and if we can enlist the interest of our connubial mates for our chessical mates, our intellectual pastime will be immensely benefited and will pass into universal favor."
  • Indian elections for prime minister start next month, and Narendra Modi's government is working overtime to thwart the opposition parties.
  • How the new House speaker, Mike Johnson, is struggling to fundraise for Republicans.
  • Are low mortgage rates a thing of the distant past?
  • Trouble at the American Civil Liberties Union.
  • Writer Seth Mandel interviewed Jewish reggae artist Matisyahu—on venue staff repeatedly protesting him and getting his shows canceled—for Commentary.

                      @TheReEncogitationer

No, he's referring to people who have actually done their research on the subject. Christian, Jewish and unbelieving scholars have concluded that Jesus was a real man that founded a religion; go and give their works a read. Even the earliest anti-Christian polemicists acknowledge that Jesus was an actual being; none of them made the accusation that the founder of the religion they opposed didn't exist, nor did they accuse the earliest Christians of making up Jesus.

You and your ilk have not provided a compelling case that shows otherwise.

Your insistence on unhumorously wedging your atheism into a string of irreverent comments is annoying enough to earn a mute, something that up to this point I have reserved for the likes of pants-shitters like SQRLSY.

If an atheist gets muted and nobody regards his inane posts, did he ever really exist?

I used to. That scenario is so ridiculously dangerous that any reasonable person quits traveling those roads on a bike after 1 or 2 encounters. Plus, I would imagine that rural Amazon drivers have really thinned that herd.

And he seemed to be implying that Jesus wasn't a virgin. Fundamentalist Christians had a shit-fit when Martin Scorcese's The Last Temptation of Christ even hinted at that back in the Eighties.

                1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

Of course, it doesn't require a particular person to tell parables, and an Omnipotent Being in flesh wouldn't need to couch truth in parables to hide truths from the Romans or even speak or communicate them at all.

                  1. Truthfulness   1 year ago

"Research in cognitive psychology has proved that parables enable the retention of a message because they call on a semantic memory." - Philip Suciadi Chia

2 different leftists were arrested trying to get on stage to stab Trump in 2016.

Last night leftists ran people out of a discussion with Rittenhouse (can't confirm sarc was there or not) with leftists saying to do it again next week at Kent State.

But antifa isn't real. Leftiist violence isn't real.

          1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

Rittenhouse successfully defended himself against a lefty mob. That narrative must be suppressed. In Austin, the lefty DA managed to find a jury that would convict.

            1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Many on the left still think the people killed were black instead of criminal white people. It is amazing.

              1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

Many people don't realize that Rittenhouse was attempting to put out the second dumpster fire the molester started that evening and was retreating when another criminal (who was never tried) fired the first shot. The second guy chased him and assaulted him with a skateboard. The guy he maimed admitted he would have shot Rittenhouse if he hadn't been disarmed.

Yeah, and you can see it in the video--Rittenhouse started pointing his rifle at Grosskreutz, who appears to surrender at first. When Kyle turns his attentions elsewhere, he then starts to swing the gun forward to shoot Kyle, who reacted instantly and blew his bicep off.

Remember way back when McCain and Obama were running against each other and they both swore to stick to public funding because Presidential campaigns were costing too much money… until Obama realized he could make more money from private donors and renegged on the agreement and then turned around a pummeled McCain for accepting public funds?

Remember in 2016 when Trump beat Clinton with less than half the campaign funds and then in 2020 when Bloomberg spent “over a million dollars per US citizen” on advertising alone?

Even when it’s not their campaign and there’s no government spending involved, even if there's no actual money or legally actionable infractions, Democrats raise the price/cost of democracy.

There was an idiot reporter on MSNBC or CNN who apparently couldn't do elementary-school math. It even got repeated unironically by a few more idiots in the legacy media before someone pointed out that it would actually break down to about a dollar per American, not a million per.

They really aren't 'squatters' until after they have completed the term of their continuous adverse possession. Which, in sane states, is like a decade. Prior to that they are illegal trespassers who can be kicked out at any time at the landlord's will.

What Nueva York and the Left Coast have going on currently isn't squatting, it is just 'legalized' bureaucratized property theft.

    1. Zeb   1 year ago

Yes, in may ways I would say so. It does appear true that women can't compete against men at the highest levels, so he's right about that narrow comparison. But that doesn't mean that in general women can't beat men at chess (unlike in most athletic things where most men can beat almost all women). Men tend to have wider distributions of many traits and longer tails on the bell curves. Men tend to be at the pinnacle of a lot of intellectual/intelligence based things. But they are also overrepresented among the stupidest and most violent people.
I'm not saying it's true necessarily, but it's quite possible that women are smarter than men on average, but among the most intellectually talented men tend to dominate.

      1. Rev Arthur L kuckland   1 year ago

In chess, there’s also a factor of insane obsessiveness. Chess grand masters spend all their spare time memorizing every move of tens of thousands of games, until they can recognize that the current game is more or less following some of those patterns, run through them to the end, and pick which move puts them on a winning path. Or often, just a non-losing path, because it seems like any game with no mistakes will be a draw. And no matter how smart you are, if you don’t do the same you’ll progress in chess until you’re playing crazy men that memorized most of the games you’re ever likely to play, and you can’t beat them.

Women are crazy about many things, but not often in the way that leads one to dedicate ones whole life to an almost unwinnable board game!

Beetlejuice 2 teaser trailer released! Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega star in sneak peek of Tim Burton's highly-anticipated sequel

I'm going to see that one in the theater for sure.

    1. Randy Sax   1 year ago

I'm worried it's gonna suck. I love the first one, but every sequel made in the past 10 years sucks donkey dick. Not much high hopes.

      1. sarcasmic   1 year ago

Most sequels have different writers and directors. This one's still all Tim Burton, so I think there's a good chance it won't suck.

      2. Minadin   1 year ago

        Mule dick.

      3. Super Scary   1 year ago

Especially when they try and do a sequel years and years later, like with Dumb and Dumber To or Incredibles 2.

However, the Blade Runner sequel was pretty sweet so I guess it's not a hard rule.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

It really depends on them understanding their audience, and if there's an appetite for such a thing to begin with. "Top Gun: Maverick" is probably the template for how to do a sequel that's decades older than the original.

I've never actually seen Beetlejuice, mainly because I'm not a fan of Burton's "look how quirky and offbeat I am!" aesthetic. So I have no interest in watching a sequel to it. But maybe it will bring in a lot of older Gen-Xers for the nostalgia factor. Getting Jenna Ortega was fortunate, too, since she's the current Zoomer It Girl of the moment.

          1. Randy Sax   1 year ago

the original is worth a watch.

“look how quirky and offbeat I am!” There is definitely some of that in the movie, but not with its titular character. Think of like a dumber, hornier, Joker.

          2. sarcasmic   1 year ago

The original is a fun movie. The special effects are so dated that they're comical all by themselves. Keaton does a great job as a bad guy. There's a lot of typical Burton hokiness, but it fits.

Also sand worms, so it ties to current events.

I remember watching the cartoon first as a child, so when I finally got around to seeing the actual movie I was pretty surprised how different the vibe of the whole thing was.

Also the head shrinking bit at the end gave me nightmares.

            3. damikesc   1 year ago

Thing is, a lot of the jokes done in the movie will not be done in the sequel (i.e people who commit suicide spending eternity as civil servants)

              1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

The perfect sequel would start with the titular character haunting a library, flashing his junk at kids in a princess dress while the protagonists struggle not to offend him as he proclaims persecution based on gender and neurodivergence. It humorously escalates as he makes more and more outrageous demands and the townspeople capitulate until the government steps in and makes everything worse. He eventually just wanders off to the afterlife in boredom because he can't display a behavior that they refuse to tolerate.

          3. TrickyVic (old school)   1 year ago

The first one is good. Particularly if you have ever been a fan of Keaton's comedy roles. Mr. Mom and Night Shift for example.

I didn't think Maverick was great. I like it, but it didn't suck which is a win these days for sequels.

            1. Dillinger   1 year ago

              >>Mr. Mom and Night Shift

            2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

Someone pointed out to me that the plot of Maverick was literally the plot of Star Wars. They have to fly an impossible mission against an overwhelming enemy to a tiny target that will win the battle against all odds. Once you se it, you can't unsee it.

I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.

            4. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

Honestly, Maverick's the most fun I've had in a movie theater since I went to the midnight showing of Iron Man when it first came out. Yeah, it's formulaic, but it's a formula that works when you have great action sequences, a charismatic leading man, a love interest that isn't obnoxiously overbearing, and the right amount of fan service to get the Gen-Xers who saw the original in 1986 to take their own kids or grandkids and recreate the experience they had as children.

          2. Idaho-Bob   1 year ago

The first sequel ruined the original. Most sequels are not that terrible. Unless they switch the cast with all women. That's how you fuck up a franchise.

I see an obvious parallel. The flood of migrants illegally crossing the border are given squatters rights to this country. If you claim you are seeking asylum, you can stay here until a court date years later (if you even show up for this distant court date). You just have to claim you are seeking asylum.

You break into someone's home and just claim you are a tenant, and you get to stay there until the owner goes through a lengthy eviction civil suit.

""Why do men dominate chess?" asks Quillette."

The same reason there are more male CEO's, why there is a "gender pay gap", why men tend to choose activities that involve head to head competition more. Its innate. We enjoy the thrill of competition more, besting your opponent, winning.

Of course this is a field where you can argue that women absolutely can compete in a fair way (compared with physical sports), but it just goes back to interests and desires. Less women are awesome at chess bc less of them want to be awesome and kick other peoples ass at it.

Just like on the whole, there are a lot more women who are great at knitting. Sure men could absolutely be great at it and nothing is stopping them, but few of them have an interest to be

    1. Medulla Oblongata   1 year ago

The article references things where women dominate the player pools at the recreational level, like Scrabble and bridge, but are non-existent at the highest levels of their respective games.

One can assume that if there was competitive knitting, men would dominate that too for the same reasons.

Heck, these days men pretending to be women are being better women than natural-born women in things like beauty pageants and woman-of-the-year efforts.

      1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Heck, these days men pretending to be women are being better women than natural-born women in things like beauty pageants and woman-of-the-year efforts."

I don't find this to be the case at all. Men pretending to be women are usually a caricature of women. I understand some men prefer a caricature - more flirtatious, larger breasts, more flamboyant dress, make up and hairstyle. These men are a minority. To most men, they are a grotesque exaggeration.

        1. Uilleam   1 year ago

You're a bit slow. His comment was tongue in cheek, on the "women" winning contests (beauty, lifting, swimming, etc.). He wasn't commenting on their attractiveness. That's in your head and pure projection.

          1. mtrueman   1 year ago

" His comment was tongue in cheek,"

I don't think so. Many men are captivated by the exaggerated femininity of men posing as women. I am not, and neither are you but that's not relevant to Medulla Oblongata's claims. And I also believe, as Medulla Oblongata claims, men would do better at top level knitting than women. In fact, there are male mathematicians who write papers detailing different knots they've devised and their advantages in knitting. Knitting, like cooking, is traditionally a women's activity, but at the top level, men predominate, due to several factors Medulla Oblongata lists above.

            1. Uilleam   1 year ago

Now your going to explain to me how if egg sucking was competitive, grandpas would do it better. Get out of here ya dink.

            2. Uilleam   1 year ago

I’ll clarify. He’s commenting on men winning as women, which is obviously ridiculous, as men are not women, including not attractive as women. How do you not get that? You making this actually about the attractiveness of men pretending to be women, when they are obviously not attractive, says more about you than him.

              1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"including not attractive as women. How do you not get that? "

I agree. But there are some men who disagree and find the exaggerated femininity a turn on, not even necessarily 'gay' men, either as I understand. Perhaps Medulla Oblongata is one of them. Don't really care one way or the other. Different strokes, and all that.

"You making this actually about the attractiveness of men pretending to be women,"

That wasn't me. It was Medulla Oblongata who claimed "these days men pretending to be women are being better women than natural-born women in things like beauty pageants." If that was meant as tongue in cheek, it was still a plausible claim at face value, given the varied and complex nature of human sexuality and desire.

                1. Medulla Oblongata   1 year ago

Not tongue-in-cheek at all, and not supportive either.

Just making a point that when men set their mind to things, even things normally expected to be won by women–like beauty pageants–men seem to always be able to win, even when the odds make it seem unlikely.

It's the pageant officials making the decision.

Another trend I've noticed is women in their 50s and 60s being put forward in the media as sexy models in swim suits or Hollywood opening night gowns.

      https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=56ACCF4854130FA6545F43FFCEB68C83
It's an account of the tournament between Kasparov and Short in 1993. The book debunks the myth that chess isn't a physical sport and details the exhaustion and challenges of the 20 game match.

About women chess players, do you have any idea why Chinese women are so strong in chess? I think half of the top women's chess players in the world today are Chinese. It's also true that the current world's men's chess champion is a Chinese man, but this is more of a fluke than a trend.

If you want to believe that top level chess isn't a physical sport, go ahead. I've pointed out that top level players and those who observe them think otherwise. Read the book if you doubt me.

                1. Zeb   1 year ago

Jesus Christ, dude. It's not a physical sport because the sport itself is not physical (apart from the physical markers used on the game board). Of course sustained chess playing is going to be physically grueling. The fact that some chess players have characterized it as "physical sport" doesn't change the common meaning of the term.

                  1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Of course sustained chess playing is going to be physically grueling."

This is precisely the point. And a 20 game match like the one between Short and Kasparov was sustained over several weeks. Winning requires stamina and physical resilience. I think it's wrong headed of you and the purveyors of common prejudice to down play the physical aspect of the game especially after it's pointed out to you that the top players - people who've played at the top level - disagree.

You probably deny that marksmanship and archery are physical sports, too. Neither require running, swimming, jumping, kicking, throwing or hitting balls, pucks, shuttlecocks or horseshoes. Like chess, neither require much in the way of movement, I agree, but they do require intense physical control. Marksmanship concentrates that physicality over fractions of a second, while chess stretches it out over weeks.

You probably deny that marksmanship and archery are physical sports, too.

Like chess, marksmanship is a skill, not a physical sport. Archery may be regarded as a physical sport, but extrapolating similarities between it and chess insofar as they both require exceptional concentration is at best disingenuous. Play a few games of chess, then hump a fifty-pound ruck up a mountain. Note the difference.

                    2. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Archery may be regarded as a physical sport"

You're finally talking sense. It's probably one of the most feminine sports, as well. Even the Romans recognized this when they made Diana the goddess of archery.

" as they both require exceptional concentration"

Absolutely true. And if you don't think an activity that requires sustained exceptional concentration over weeks takes an enormous physical toll, you haven't thought it through.

" Play a few games of chess, then hump a fifty-pound ruck up a mountain."

Alan Turing, as well as being a famous mathole and amateur chess player, was also a running enthusiast. He'd play 'round the house chess' where each player would go out and run around the house after each move.

                2. Diarrheality   1 year ago

Chess a physical sport? On the physicality scale:

chess < bowling, pool, snooker, walking, carrying a toddler, burping, taking a shit with the door open, turning around, standing upright, getting up to get another beer, flying a kite, watching someone fly a kite, eating peanut brittle, carving a pumpkin, eye rolling reading your bullshit.

                  1. mtrueman   1 year ago

You might change your mind if you read the book. It's about the tournament in 1993 between Short from UK and Kasparov, of Azerbaijan. Although Short only won one of the 20 games, it was still gripping tale of endurance, an ordeal that exhausted both of the participants. If that doesn't appeal to you, try an account of Shackleton's adventures in the Antarctic. Though that wasn't sport, it was deadly serious.

                    1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

Let's make this simple. Can you play chess with just a head (assuming some sort of life support)? If so, there is nothing "physical" about it, and not a "sport" as most people define that. And it does not matter how many self-serving chess types claim it is.

Now if you want to include something actually physical, like punching between moves, you might have an argument.

You might be interested in Chessboxing. I like chess and I like boxing, but personally, I find chessboxing undignified and unseemly.

Chess boxing, or chessboxing, is a hybrid sport that combines two traditional disciplines: chess and boxing.[1][2] Two combatants play alternating rounds of blitz chess and boxing until one wins by checkmate or knockout. It is also possible to win by time penalty as in normal chess, and by boxing decision if there is a draw in the chess round.[3]

Typically, events are held in a standard boxing ring using standard amateur boxing equipment and rules. The chess round is also played in the ring with the table, board, and seating being moved in and out of the ring for each round.

The governing bodies of chessboxing are the World Chessboxing Association and the World Chess Boxing Organisation.[4]

Chessboxing was invented by French comic book artist Enki Bilal and adapted by Dutch performance artist Iepe Rubingh as an art performance[5][6] and has subsequently grown into a competitive sport.[7][8][9] Chessboxing is particularly popular in the United Kingdom, India, Finland, France,[10] and Russia.[11]

"Can you play chess with just a head (assuming some sort of life support)?"

I'm not familiar with any chess like this. I'm pretty sure Short had arms at least as he would thrash away on his guitar doing Sex Pistol songs between games to relieve the stress. Not sure about Kasparov though.

It depends on the ratings of the players. It's very likely that a player with a 2500 rating will beat another rated at 2400, regardless of their sex, or what claims the players make.

Reminder: KARtikeya is so stupid, he thinks the main idea behind my 5+ years of Charles Koch criticism is that CK is a "commie."

Despite the fact that every single time I mention Reason's sugar daddy, I point out his obsession with depressing working-class wages and making billionaires like himself even richer. IOW, I describe CK as the *literal antithesis* of a communist. He's the mustache-twirling villain in every tale ever told BY a communist.

Don't believe me though. Read for yourself: "Koch isn’t some commie like you make him out to be. Your whole parody is flawed."

Commie was a dumb term to use. At least I admit it.

It’s still not as dumb as the commenters that describe every social trend they disagree with as “Marxism.”

Or Jesse saying a failed comedian and YouTuber is part of the “standard group of libertarians.” Or him thinking some random douche with the twitter name “Charles G Koch” was the Charles Koch despite the twitter douche obviously being a young man.

Or sticking to the same unfunny, nonsensical parody schtick for 5 years that only the knuckle dragging morons on here think is clever or funny.

            1. Sandra (formerly OBL)   1 year ago

It's so strange, given that you're totally NOT a liberal, that my behavior bothers you, yet I never see you criticize the liberal idiots here. You wanna talk about gimmicks that don't even make sense?

Let's start with Buttplug. He's been flat-out lying about the Biden economy for years. Denied inflation was an issue. Told us everything was terrific in 2022. Claims only MAGA cultists brainwashed by "wingnut.com" don't like Bidenomics, even though Biden's low approval on the economy is a widely reported fact, transcending party affiliation.

How about the painfully unfunny Squirrely? Constantly in a state of panic about "election denial." 'Cause it might lead to violence, you see. Except he wasn't bothered by Democratic election denial from 2017 to 2020. And he somehow forgot that during that period, a progressive gunman tried to massacre Republican Congressmen.

Should I keep going? Surely you've seen the "radical individualist" who is paradoxically Reason's leading defender of Kendian race-obsessed leftism? Or the lame-catchphrase-spewing, Harvard-Law-namedropping moron who made a court-packing prediction so stupid, I put it in my mental bookmarks under "likely to fail" - and even *I* am surprised how spectacularly it failed?

Yeah. None of these repetitive, stupid, incoherent liberals bother you. Your problem is only with me.

              But you're not a liberal though. 😉

              1. KARtikeya   1 year ago

Why am I associated with these people? Because I don’t agree with the majority of the commenters on here I should be lumped in with them?

Your non parody comments are actually intelligent. I don’t agree with a lot of them, but they aren’t the same old crap most people post on here. The fact that you hitched your wagon to this parody that doesn’t even make sense is why I give you a hard time.

I’m not a liberal or a libertarian. I care about civil liberties so that’s why I read Reason.

"But even if separate categories hold women back in some ways, they do seem to help in other respects; mostly by providing a space where female players can be free of what some describe as pervasive male harassment."

If we had never had separate men's and women's division in chess, women would be clamoring for one to provide a "safe space" from getting their brains beat in on the boards.

“the boys tend to put us down by saying things about our playing…well, if we think we’re hopeless, well, then we’ll start playing hopeless"

Trash-talking is not only aimed at girls, nor are girls above throwing out trash-talk.

"The bottom line: Plausibly, one of the main reasons why there are more elite male chess players is that boys are simply more motivated to do what it takes to become an elite player."

Much like the gender-pay gap goes away when one accounts for individual life priorities. Men appear to be willing to put in longer hours, push harder, eschew family time, etc. while women...don't. On average.

    1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"If we had never had separate men’s and women’s division in chess, women would be clamoring for one to provide a “safe space” from getting their brains beat in on the boards. "

There is a safe space: online. It possible to play chess online without revealing one's sex to the opponent, or knowing the sex of the opponent. But I believe even in online chess, there is a gender gap between levels of skill. I suspect the difference is less than it is for over the board chess, but I'm not sure it's been studied.

      1. Ersatz   1 year ago

I suspect that some of that evening out is due to people of either genders getting outside help from either men or computer chess programs like Fritz

        [IOW... cheating]

        1. mtrueman   1 year ago

I don't think cheating in online chess would account for a smaller gender gap. Medulla Oblongata tells us that men are more willing than women to sacrifice family, friends etc to achieve goals. It's likely that men are also more willing than women to resort to cheating in order to win.

It could be possible that a smaller gender gap could be explained by men pretending to be women. I suspect the number of such men is much greater than the number of women pretending to be men. But again, I'm not aware of any studies on the matter.

            1. mtrueman   1 year ago

If men are generally better at chess than women, and men are more likely to pose as women than women men, that would result in the smaller gender gap. Whether that helps to explain any smaller gender gap in online chess, I don't know.

I think it was in a notorious New Yorker article that claimed there were dozens of genders. A man who is otherwise 'normal' but poses online as a woman on line to cyber with self-identified men is one of those genders. Another gender is the otherwise 'normal' man who poses as women to cyber with self-identified women.

It's interesting how all this was foreseen by Alan Turing, computer pioneer and not quite 'normal' man. His original Turing Test was based on our ability to discern the sex of online interlocutors.

I’d argue a lot of men put in what it takes to dominate at sports because they want recognition. The average woman can, with minimal effort, doll themselves up and get plenty of recognition, just walking into a bar or even a through a supermarket.

The obvious extreme, mentally imbalanced example of this is dudes that “transition” and then go on to dominate in women’s sports. The ultimate attention whores.

      1. mtrueman   1 year ago

I don't think that men or women decide to pursue a career in sports because they are 'attention whores.' That seems very uncharitable. They do it because they enjoy he activity in itself or the competition. If anyone can be said to be an attention whore it's comedians, actors and musicians. And even here there are those who loathe the attention, still get stage sickness, and are extremely shy in their personal lives.

What evidence do you have for this? All the times he talked about doing it before but never did? Even if he did, it is perfectly ethical to use a political opponents tactics against them. What would be unethical is to use it on other parties.

To continue the discussion of “squatters’ rights”, it seems this colloquial term is being used in a context broader than the doctrine of adverse possession. AP is a common-law doctrine (now codified in every state) for obtaining fee simple title to land (which has to be proven by meeting all the legal elements, such as continuous possession over a statutory period – typically five years or more, depending on the state). “Squatters’ rights”, as Reason has reported recently, appears to refer to the alleged tenants claiming a leasehold interest, but not a title interest, in the property.

In New York, it appears the burden of proof lies with the owner to prove the “tenant” is a trespasser without any leasehold interest in the property. Thankfully, my state’s Landlord/Tenant Act puts the burden on the so-called tenant:

    (1) An unauthorized person or trespasser has no legal right to occupy, enter, or trespass on a premises. A person who cannot produce authorization allowing the person to occupy a premises is an unauthorized person or trespasser for the purpose of this section and may be removed from the premises immediately by law enforcement.

    (2) For the purposes of this section, authorization includes:
    (a) a written rental agreement entitling the person to occupy the premises;
    (b) written or verbal authorization from the landlord; or
    (c) written or verbal authorization from a tenant if the person is a guest of the tenant.

    (3) For the purposes of this section, verbal authorization is valid only if it is verified by the individual or entity entitled to give it under subsection (2)(b) or (2)(c).

Seems like an easy fix for NY lawmakers…

    1. damikesc   1 year ago

You assume that the problem is something that needs to be "fixed" in the eyes of NY lawmakers.

They do not care. They could not pay for all legal expenses for "tenants" if they so wished to do so.

This is the system they wanted.

      1. See Double You   1 year ago

Oh, I have no doubt. This is their way of “solving” homelessness. NY has more or less eliminated the right to exclude trespassers from unoccupied residences.

    2. Yuno Hoo   1 year ago

A person who cannot produce authorization allowing the person to occupy a premises is an unauthorized person or trespasser

Might be fun to pursue that for, say, the Kennedy Center or, better, the White House.

        ...or the NY Governor's mansion.

Or the NY Mayor's living place...

        Or their actual personal addresses...

    3. Gaear Grimsrud   1 year ago

The problem is that these grifters print out a generic lease agreement, fill in the blanks, waive it at the cops who come to evict and the cops tell the owner their hands are tied because it's a civil matter. And even when they're finally evicted they face no criminal consequences because civil courts don't impose criminal sanctions. I'm not exactly sure how to solve the problem but there needs to be a presumption of a crime and real consequences like jail time in the beginning when the owner files a complaint.

      1. Michael Ejercito   1 year ago

The problem is that these grifters print out a generic lease agreement, fill in the blanks
        Would that not be fraud?

      3. Zeb   1 year ago

    4. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

Didn't they cover this on Seinfeld? There is a massive issue of subletting in violation of the leasing contract in NYC because of the rent controls. So they passed laws so that tenants duped by subletters couldn't be immediately ejected by the owners.

This is a direct result of the codification of grift. I have no sympathy for anyone in NYC. You allow this shit to happen and only complain when it impacts you or someone's grandmother.

      1. I…….. Fudd   1 year ago

You’re thinking of Friends. Rachel and Monica lived in Monica’s grandmother’s rent controlled apartment.

And I have nothing but antipathy for NY Democrats who made this shit happen.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

I wasn't an obsessive fan of that show, and I was honestly curious how two women with such shitty jobs could afford a nice, huge apartment (for NYC) like that.

          1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

The plotline of Monica subletting her grandmother's rent-controlled apartment explains how she was able to afford it. The show never explained, though, how Chandler and Joey could afford an equally-massive (for Manhattan) apartment across the hall from Monica's.

I guess it's not important as it was a sitcom and that explanation wasn't necessary. I just found it odd that they go to the trouble of explaining the one apartment's affordability while omitting the explanation for the other one.

            1. I…….. Fudd   1 year ago

Chandler made a lot of money at a corporate job. There was a running gag that none of the others really quite understood just what his job was. Plus the apartment wasn’t as nice, so presumably had lower market rent than the girl’s place.

          2. EISTAU Gree-Vance   1 year ago

      1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

What is insane is pretending the issue is complicated. It doesn't take a fancy law degree to parse tenancy law. They could set up tenancy courts and appoint/elect enough judges that hearings are held within days.

A lot of people like it the way it is because they feed off the grift.

“it’s just as possible for a woman to become the best as any guy. But there are so many difficulties and social boundaries for women generally in society. That is what blocks it.” - Judit Polgar

This is pure BS! It always seems to boil down to some fictional either-or in the culture wars. The media never seem to consider the possibility that there is at least one other third alternative to the "women don't have the capacity to win at chess" or "women are systematically excluded from chess by men socially" duality - namely that women don't LIKE playing chess, think it's silly to put the time and effort into becoming expert at the game, and self-select into other activities in the same way that women dominate nursing and teaching.

    1. Zeb   1 year ago

But isn't that as much of an overgeneralization as anything? The same can probably be said about the interest of men in general in chess. The vast majority of men don't find it worth the effort to become a chess master.
I think when you are talking about something as rare as playing chess at the grandmaster level you really need to focus on the small segments of the population who even have the capacity to do so and when looking at such a rarified group you are likely to see patterns that are not clear from looking at men vs women in the entire population.

    2. mtrueman   1 year ago

"namely that women don’t LIKE playing chess,"

I don't think there is any doubt that Polgar liked playing chess. Her idea was society tends to guide talented women away from chess. The same way I noticed in Korea where talented high school students of either sex were brow beaten by parents and teachers into studying electrical engineering at university rather than the student's preference for physics, say. Society has a way of channeling people into certain decisions. It's got nothing to do with the media, per se, except that it's part of society and subject to the same pressures and prejudices as the rest of us.
