Unsurprising: Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley lost to Donald Trump in her home state's primary on Saturday, winning 39.5 percent of the vote to Trump's 59.8 percent.
Haley has said she will not be dropping out of the presidential race "until the last person votes" with her campaign announcing more ad spends ahead of Super Tuesday. Meanwhile, her Koch-affiliated funders at Americans for Prosperity Action have decided to pull support, instead choosing to focus on more winnable House and Senate races. (Disclosure: Reason Foundation, the nonprofit which publishes this website, has also received Koch funding.)
Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that billionaire Charles Koch "and his group got played for suckers right from the beginning!" and called Haley "braindead."
"I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. I'm a woman of my word," Haley said in a speech on Saturday. "I'm not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden."
Haley is right that both candidates' disapproval ratings are stunningly high, and that third-party candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are somewhat unprecedentedly gaining traction. But that doesn't mean that staying in the race will do much of anything.
Self-immolation outside the Israeli embassy: An active-duty U.S. airman named Aaron Bushnell has reportedly died after setting himself on fire outside of the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C., protesting the Israeli government's invasion of Gaza.
Bushnell filmed his protest and livestreamed it on Twitch. "I will no longer be complicit in genocide," said Bushnell, prior to setting himself on fire. "I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest," he said before dousing himself in a liquid, lighting himself on fire, and shouting "Free Palestine!"
This is the second self-immolation in front of an Israeli embassy that's happened in response to the current conflict in Gaza. The first protest took place in Atlanta late last year, and it resulted in severe injuries but not death of the protester.
Meanwhile in Gaza… The Israel Defense Forces have reportedly presented plans for removing civilians from active combat zones in Gaza, which "reinforces Israel's intention to send troops into Rafah," per The New York Times. Rafah, which is on the border with Egypt, is where hundreds of thousands of Gazans have taken refuge. The Israeli military's intentions have drawn criticism from the United States. Very little information has emerged to the general public about what is in the plan.
Scenes from New York: "There's been a national shortage of ADHD medication for more than a year and a half," writes Intelligencer's James D. Walsh. "According to the government and industry experts, there are multiple overlapping causes: manufacturing problems, labor issues, supply-chain failures, and a huge rise in demand during the pandemic. But Ascent [a drug manufacturer based on Long Island] claims there's another factor exacerbating the shortage, one that's completely sui generis: the fact that it's been shut down by the Drug Enforcement Administration." Pretty sure the constitution says felons can't vote, nothing about them not being elected.
The founding fathers supported the idea that it should be up to the voters. Absence of term limits for example. That was added later.
Many of them knew politicians were scum but thought you had the right to elect the scum of your choice as long as they were natural US born and over 35.
The Constitution (14th and 15th Amendments) says that it is up to state governments whether they allow felons to vote, not that states must ban voting for felons. But except for insurrectionists (which are not defined, but when this clause was written the only people it could affect were Confederates who broke their oaths to the union), there is nothing at all in the Constitution to ban felons from running for office and serving if elected. Congress has the power to determine the qualifications of its members, so either house can kick a member out for crime, but - and this happened with Adam Clayton Powell - the same constituency can reelect a convicted felon after he resigned or was thrown out of Congress, and Congress has seated him.
It's not that easy when it's the President; the only route I can see for Congress to reject the undisputed winner of the election would be to install him as President and immediately impeach him for his crimes. It looks to me like the Senate could not just take the verdict of a state or even a federal court, but would have to try him again. As poor as the cases against him seem to be, I don't think you could get 2/3 of non-partisan, non-biased Senators to convict, let alone 68 Senators from a Senate that's split about 55 - 45 Democrat to Republican.
Leonard Peltier ran for president from prison during the Bush Jr. years. There's probably been others. It's important to note though that none of the imprisoned candidates have run with success.

Well, it depends on your AFSC, at least as far as the Air Force is concerned. When someone gets a "background check" for the military, it's typically only a basic one to check for criminal convictions, identity verification, and things like that. It really isn't any different than what you might get on a normal job application.
It's only the Top Secret SSBI where they really crawl up your ass looking for any shady shit that might be going on. And realistically, the military's not going to give a crap about a bunch of commie wannabes signing up these days, because they're all in a recruiting crisis and need all the bodies they can get, plus the fact that a generation-plus of "oh, they'll grow out of this college radicalism phase" cultural and ideological neglect the neocons indulged in, resulted in the ideological capture of the government by these cretins.
Keep in mind, too, recruiters don't have backdoors to social media like the NSA--you can learn a lot about someone by reading their Facebook or Instagram feeds, but of those are privated, an overburdened recruiter isn't going to deep-dive if a basic background check is passed. He's got an E-7 supervisor breathing down his neck demanding quota fills and doesn't have time.

Collectivism isn't inherently evil. It becomes evil when it's backed with force, as in participate or else. Mutual-aid organizations were all over the country at one point. They served functions like providing a social safety net or insurance by voluntarily pooling resources. FDR made a point ending that during the Great Depression to get people dependent upon New Deal programs instead of each other, and some have come back in response to Obamacare for example. Voluntary collectivism is a good thing.

Yeah, I served with some real dirt bags and quacks. A few I'm pretty sure were certifiable psychopaths too (although, contrary to popular thought, psychopaths don't do well in the service from my experience). The military caste still makes up a majority but not as much as it once did. Knew quite a few GI Bill chasers even back in 1995-2005 when I served (but most never actually ended up using their GI Bill). The one that really got me was how many D&D, Magic, etc players there were and goths and punks.

Additionally, some of the strictest Calvinists also practiced far more equality between the sexes, were largely opposed to slavery, and believed all men were created equal (some could even be described as proto-Marxists/Socialistband anarchists). Also, Calvinists was by far the largest movement of Protestantism, and definitely the most influential outside the Holy Roman Empire and Scandinavia. Today, such progressive Christian churches such as Methodists and Episcopal/Anglican are Calvinists. His use of this as a perogrative shows his imbecility on the subject.

The rights as conceived in the Constitution were not actually new rights but were rights that had been recognized for some time by first Humanists and then Enlightenment thinkers. They also tended to be rights long recognized (if imperfectly) in Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and even the Holy Roman Empire (except maybe the freedom of religion, but I should note that many English Republicans, which were almost exclusively Protestants, did recognize freedom of religion even if they didn't actually practice it during the brief existence of the English Republic). Additionally, it was largely Protestants (and rather the Calvinists) that first started proposing a separation between Church and State (the first real time this is seen in English writings for instance was during the Tudor age, by Protestant writers).
Some of these ideas of natural rights date back to the middle ages and some even to the Roman Republic/Empire. The right to hear arms was one of the hallmark differences between freeborn citizens and slaves/serfs beginning in the Roman Republic/Empire, continuing through the middle ages (when countries like England and the Holy Roman Empire not only allowed free men to hear arms, but required them to) and was mostly still recognized until the 20th century. I would point out that in Europe of the Middle Ages, any rights would either come from the crown or from God, and as the crown also came from God, the rights would ultimately have been granted by God. We simply have a hard time understanding how pervasive religion was until recent times, in people's lives. The idea of a separation between the ecclesiastic and secular realms would have been unthinkable for almost everyone, from the learned through the peasantry.

At my first legal job child labor laws prevented me from working past a certain time on skool nights. When I turned 16 I was allowed to work longer hours.
We'd be much better off if more 16 year olds were getting jobs. But now the job of flipping burgers at McDonalds, in some states, is reserved for people who need to somehow support a family of 4 at that salary.
We've also priced 16 year old kids out of jobs like that and used OSHA to prevent them from doing those jobs as well. Used to be, not so long ago, in a galaxy not so very far away, that a 16 year old could bag groceries, flip burgers, stock products on a shelf, among other things.
And 13-15 year olds could push a broom in a shop a few hours per day. Not being paid much because it's not really essential work, but it gave them something they were responsible for and tied their production to the money they gained. It also gave them experience at a young age in seeing how business works, serving as a de-facto apprenticeship.

Since this is a universal right you cannot be deprived of it without a conviction. In fact, the first section of the 14A specifically states that these rights have to be honored by the state as well as the federal government, it seems highly suspect that the 14A section 3 would do away with those same protections.

No that has got to be some of the ones I served with, who joined after 9/11 and then when we were getting deployed for OEF/OIF in 2003, were whining they didn't join the Army to go to war. Uhm what do you think the point of the Army is? Were you not paying attention in Basic (based on how many of this same ones also didn't know how to set up their TA-50 and had to be retaught BRM skills, I can actually believe the latter).
There was also the idiot who whined about being assigned an M-16A2 (as a medical unit not everyone was assigned a weapon, initially) and so my squad leader/buddy who hadn't been on the list to get a rifle initially went to the first sergeant and had him reassign her rifle to him. As he stated 'I'll be damned if I am going to a war zone without a rifle'. Then again he had a combat patch already, a CMB, and this was his third deployment (Somalia, the Balkans and OIF/OEF). As it was, we ended up not going to Iraq but originally we're supposed to.

Most are well above that in combat arms, really, in the Army, the cooks and transportation Corp are have the lowest average IQ/education. Basically if you fail combat arms they recycle you as transportation Corp or cooks. Supply and quartermaster also have a poor reputation for intelligence. I was assigned to Ft Eustis when it was still the home of Transportation and they did their AIT there and yes, they fully live up (or down as it is) to their reputation.

Yes there's been a push for decades. It hasn't worked very well. Sixty percent of all recruits are second or third (or more) generation military. Most come from lower middle class and working middle class families. White males, and Christians are overrepresented in the ranks. The majority come from rural or working class neighborhoods. And the rural south is vastly overrepresented, followed by Midwest and Rocky mountain west. Yes, California has the highest number of recruits (but again from rural and working class backgrounds largely) but that is simply because they're the most populous state, and have a high veteran population because of all the military posts in the state. This is largely why we're having a recruiting crisis, they've made the military less attractive to the traditional classes that volunteer, while the woke largely don't join (because it's beneath them). It's worse in the officer class I will admit but largely the trigger pullers aren't officers.
I will say there's more of this sort in the more technical fields in the military (but still far from a majority) and I can imagine thus more in the USAF, Navy and Space Force (being as they have more technical fields), but the average trigger puller in the Army or Marine Corp is white, male, Protestant, rural or working class background and part of the new military caste, e.g. generational service. (Note I said average, not universal, but the more elite the combat arms the whiter it gets, to the point Special Operations are well over 90% white).
