Impending Impeachment

Plus: a shaky bipartisan border deal, the looming Taylor Swift PSYOP, and the disappearance of the D.C. area's greatest landmark...

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testifying to Congress | Annabelle Gordon - CNP/CNP / Polaris/Newscom

House Republicans took a major step toward impeaching Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Early Wednesday morning, the House Homeland Security Committee voted 18 to 15 to advance two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas over the Biden administration's handling of immigration at the Southern Border.

The first of two impeachment articles advanced by the committee accuses the secretary of a "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" for failing to detain all migrants not clearly allowed in the country, and instead creating an illegal "catch and release" scheme.

The second article accuses Mayorkas of "breach of public trust" over various alleged false statements he made to Congress, including saying that the border is "closed" and that DHS properly vetted Afghans airlifted to the U.S. after the Taliban takeover of that country.

Mayorkas' "actions created this unprecedented crisis, turning every state into a border state. As a result, thousands of Americans have lost their lives and our nation is experiencing a historic national security, public safety, and humanitarian catastrophe," said House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R–Tenn.) in a statement.

The impeachment of a cabinet secretary is a rare event. It's only happened once before in 1876. Republicans argue the move is justified by Mayorkas' lawlessness, which has in turn allowed crime and drugs to surge across the border.

Mayorkas called Republicans' accusations "baseless and inaccurate" in a letter to Green, reports Politico, which cited his department's enforcement activities.

Critics of the Republicans' impeachment efforts note that the requirement to detain all arguably illegal hasn't been upheld by any administration and that the articles themselves are sloppily drafted.

if you're wondering whether House GOP's Mayorkas impeachment effort is serious, consider that the articles of impeachment complain about measures taken by a completely different department that Mayorkas does not control (oops) https://t.co/UtrDBSOni2 pic.twitter.com/wqwRjKu5uN

— Catherine Rampell (@crampell) January 31, 2024

The Cato Institute's David Bier noted in a blog post earlier this month that the Biden administration has deported a higher share of border crossers than the Trump administration. Trump's increased detention of migrants did not result in more removals.

Mayorkas' impeachment articles could make it to the House floor by next week. Republicans' thin majority will necessitate near-unanimous GOP support to advance impeachment to the Senate, where any conviction is less likely.

The Senate, meanwhile, is awkwardly working on a bipartisan immigration deal to address many of the issues raised by the Mayorkas impeachment efforts.

The Biden administration has reportedly asked for an additional $14 billion to expand federal capacity to detain and deport more immigrants. The president has also called for more restrictions on migrants' ability to claim asylum.

"What's been negotiated would—if passed into law—be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we've ever had in our country," said President Joe Biden in a Friday Statement.  The deal would also increase the number of available visas by 250,000 reports The New York Times.

Support for the Senate immigration bill is waning. Several Republican senators have come out against it. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R–La.) has said it's a "nonstarter" in the House.

Bier argued in a New York Times essay yesterday that chaos at the southern border will only be solved through increasing avenues for legal immigration. But Republicans' opposition to the Senate border bill is based, in part, on its failure to further limit legal immigration.

Former President Donald Trump has urged Congressional Republicans to oppose any immigration deal as well, promising to "fight it all the way." Trump reportedly thinks sinking an immigration deal will help him in the increasingly inevitable rematch between him and Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

The former president will need all the reelection help he can get given the Democrats' looming deployment of their ultimate weapon: Taylor Swift.

The more enthusiastic corners of conservative media are raising alarm about a potential Taylor Swift psychological operation (PSYOP). A rising chorus of MAGA influencers are arguing that the admittedly inexplicable popularity of Swift is really a sinister federal plot to throw the 2024 election to President Joe Biden.

Fox News Host Jesse Watters kicked things off earlier this month when he ran a segment arguing that Swift was a possible, possibly unwitting, Department of Defense (DOD) asset who was being used to activate Democratic voters.

???? Jesse Watters: "The Pentagon PsyOp unit pitched NATO on turning Taylor Swift into an asset for combatting misinformation online"pic.twitter.com/vUm7XxMlll

— Chief Nerd (@TheChiefNerd) January 10, 2024

Swift's headline-grabbing relationship with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, whose team will play in the Super Bowl next month, is just more evidence for the conspiracy theory.

Former GOP presidential candidate and Trump supporter Vivek Ramaswamy intimated on Twitter that the Super Bowl might even be rigged in the Chiefs' favor to create maximum value for a Swift-Kelce endorsement of Biden-Harris.

Swift endorsed Biden in 2020, so another Democratic endorsement from her wouldn't be a huge shock. Since so many of Trump's most ardent fans contend he won the last election, one wonders what exactly they're worried about.

I wonder who's going to win the Super Bowl next month. And I wonder if there's a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall. Just some wild speculation over here, let's see how it ages over the next 8 months.

— Vivek Ramaswamy (@VivekGRamaswamy) January 29, 2024

The conspiracy theorizing about Swift does raise the question; if Democrats and the DOD are so good at manufacturing popular appeal, why not cut out the middle woman and directly PSYOP America into thinking Biden is a pop icon in his own right?

Scenes from the DMV:

The DMV's most famous landmark might soon fall prey to redevelopment. No, I'm not talking about the Lincoln Memorial or anything like that. I'm referring to Arlington Temple United Methodist Church just across the river from the District in Rosslyn, Virginia.

Don't worry, there's still time to say goodbye to Rosslyn's quirky church atop a gas station. For now, it's just the skywalk to the Metro getting torn down. (edited) https://t.co/mhLHLo81Ut

— DCist (@DCist) January 19, 2024

The church sits improbably on top of a working gas station, a delightful bit of urban mixed-use development, built in 1971. The church-gas station combo will soon give way to a large mixed-use development, with apartments, retail, and, mercifully, another church and another gas station.

It's obviously sad to see such a quirky building disappear. Better to be an adult about it and accept the change than go around trying to use the legal process to stop its demolition over the wishes of the property owner.

Pretty sure the election “fortifications” they literally bragged about are still their ultimate weapons.

If you’re going to accuse Trump of something so egomaniacal, even if it sounds totally plausible for him to blow out his mouth hole, you might want to get an actual quote and not fucking hearsay.

Glad you agree it sounds plausible for Trump. As for needing more than hearsay, has Trump ever used even that standard in making accusations? If it's on the internet he throws it out as fact. So live by rumors, then accept them for yourself.

In local news regarding weaponization of the DoJ, abortion protestors who committed no violence, damage, or even blocked access convicted of misdemeanor and felony charges around FACE. Facing 11 years in jail each.

    https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-life-demonstrators-found-guilty-face-up-to-11-years-in-federal-prison

    The law:

The conspiracy charge can be punished with up to 10.5 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $260,000 while the FACE Act charge can lead to one year in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Now it is important to remember that this act also protects pro life clinics. The DoJ has admitted 70% of all violence around abortion is against pro life centers. They have yet to charge an anti pro life protestor with similar charges.

                speech involving hymns and prayer

You have posted about this trial before:

                https://reason.com/2024/01/26/canadas-trucker-crackdown/?comments=true#comment-10416286

And I responded that your article describing this case lies by omission. Just like you are doing here.

Your DW article claims that all the protestors did was:

The group prayed, sang hymns, and urged women showing up to the clinic to not get abortions.

But that is NOT the full story. Here is a more neutral account of what happened. Which I posted before as well.

                https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2024/01/25/mt-juliet-abortion-clinic-carafem-blockade-case-goes-to-federal-trial/72325328007/

On March 5, 2021, police arrested 11 people who traveled from various states to the Carafem Health Center Clinic in Mt. Juliet to block employees and patients from accessing the clinic, located on the second floor of an office building.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Klopf said during her opening statement that the government's witnesses will include a patient who had an appointment at the clinic but left because of the protesters, an employee who was "trapped inside the building during the incident, and a police officer who responded to the scene.

Mt. Juliet Cpl. Lance Schneider testified after closing statements concluded, saying that between 25-35 officers responded to the medical pavilion where the clinic was located that day. About 20-25 protesters were there, many of whom left after being warned that they would be arrested, Schneider said. He said that the protesters were peaceful and not aggressive, but that police got involved because they were disrupting other businesses in the building and refused to leave when asked by property managers.

So, this is not quite "the other side", but it at least gives a fuller picture of what is going on. The protest group did more than just "sing and pray".

                1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"He said that the protesters were peaceful and not aggressive"

...and they refused to leave when asked. Fuck Jeffy, you're right, that changes everything.
Because everyone knows that all protesters pick up and leave when asked. The point of protesting is not to cause a scene, right?

                  Fucking moron.

                  1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

and "...they were disrupting other businesses in the building ". You missed that part.

Also that they were there "to block employees and patients from accessing the clinic". That also seems important that wasn't in the DW article.

                    1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

“to block employees and patients from accessing the clinic”

Read carefully. I'm not defending the length of the prison sentence. I'm pointing out why Jesse is a disingenuous fuck for lying by omission about what the protesters did. They did not merely "sing and pray".

                  2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

And let's just review ML's tactics here.

                    From the original article:

Mt.

                    How ML chose to respond:

“He said that the protesters were peaceful and not aggressive”

…and they refused to leave when asked. Fuck Jeffy, you’re right, that changes everything.

So, ML deliberately chooses the part to quote that is testimony that is most favorable to his team, quotes the part that makes his team look the best ("the protesters were peaceful and not aggressive"), IGNORES the next phrase ("but that police got involved because they were disrupting other businesses in the building"), and then mocks the last phrase ("and refused to leave when asked by property managers"). This is the type of shit that ML likes to pull. It is a type of motte-and-bailey, he uses misdirection to get you to focus on just the parts that are most favorable to his team, and hopes that you will ignore the part that he deliberately ignored. It is the same type of trick that magicians use. Use a distraction to direct the audience's attention in one direction, while the magician uses some sleight-of-hand in the opposite direction to perform the "magic trick" hoping that the audience won't notice how it's done. He wants you to focus on the first phrase and the last phrase, mocking and using expletives and insults, hoping you won't notice that he totally ignored the middle phrase about the protestors disrupting not just the clinic but all of the businesses around it too. Because that makes his team look bad.

                    1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

I would agree that blocking egress to the business is a crime, given a certain level of obnoxiousness in refusing to be removed. But if any of these people gets 11 years, I’d start looking at the Free Palestine protestors and wondering at disparate treatments.

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

I would agree that blocking egress to the business is a crime

And I think most reasonable people would also agree. But right-wing shills like Jesse and ML deliberately hide that information from you by citing sources like DW which claims that all the protesters did was "sing and pray". They are not interested in facts or truth. They are interested only in pushing the Team Red narrative. That's the point of all this.

                    3. sarcasmic   2 years ago

They are not interested in facts or truth. They are interested only in pushing the Team Red narrative.

While attacking anyone who disagrees with accusations of pushing the leftist narrative, whatever that is.

                    4. DesigNate   2 years ago

I’d have to see how it could be determined they were “blocking egress” to give an opinion on the third point.

Regardless, ML highlighted the part that reinforced the first two points in Jesse’s original claim that they “committed no violence, damage…”

Giving the benefit of the doubt that the “blocking egress” was real and not just a mild inconvenience, do you think that deserves 11 fucking years in jail?

                    5. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

                      ...citing sources like DW ...

Can we hold you to that the next time you cite Salon?

                    6. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"But right-wing shills like Jesse and ML deliberately hide that information from you"

WHAT INFORMATION WAS HIDDEN YOU FUCKING NAZI?

"The pro-life activists were accused by the Department of Justice of violating the FACE Act and civil rights conspiracy for a protest that took place in a hallway outside of a Mount Juliet abortion provider on March 5, 2021. On that day, a group of demonstrators gathered on the second floor of an office building in the hallway outside the Carafem Health Center Clinic. The group prayed, sang hymns, and urged women showing up to the clinic to not get abortions."

It's all right there. Because it's not worded in the specific manner you demand, you're pretending it was omitted.

What a dishonest piece of shit you are. Everything that dribbles from your mouth is a lie.

                    7. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Giving the benefit of the doubt that the “blocking egress” was real and not just a mild inconvenience, do you think that deserves 11 fucking years in jail?

No I don't, and you are the first person to actually *ask* me if I agreed with the prison sentence instead of just assuming I did and/or demanding that I justify it.

I don't think any of these crimes should be Federal-level crimes. They are crimes that are generally handled by state and local authorities.

It still means that Jesse and ML are disingenuous fucks for deliberately concealing the truth about what the protesters really did. They did not merely "sing and pray".

                    8. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

                      This part:

The group prayed, sang hymns, and urged women showing up to the clinic to not get abortions.”

It is a lie by omission. Sure they sung and prayed. They ALSO blocked the clinic access, refused to leave, and disrupted the activities of not just that clinic but all of the surrounding businesses as well. All of that was CONVENIENTLY left out of the DW article, because their goal is to push the pro-life narrative. They are not going to say anything that makes their tribe look bad. And Jesse and ML are willing accomplices in concealing the truth.

                    9. Minadin   2 years ago

I've known a lot of manager and operations people who would probably be in a peck of trouble in the event of a fire with injury or loss of life, but I don't know anyone who has gone to jail for it when there wasn't one. For hurt feelings, and no actual damage, seems a tad excessive. Like 10.9 years excessive.

          Pronciples and all that.

Jeff. I'm sure you can provide evidence for why these charges are deserved.

          1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

When I call Jeff a Nazi I'm not resorting to hyperbole.

Here he defends extreme sentences for non-violent protest by political dissenters and refuses to explain why.

            1. sarcasmic   2 years ago (edited)

Here he defends extreme sentences for non-violent protest by political dissenters and refuses to explain why.

No, he described how Jesse would react to being asked about the other side. He didn’t say anything about the other side. Neither did I. So you’re demanding an explanation for something that was never said (barking along with Jesse). Or, in other words, it’s Wednesday.

              1. JesseAz   2 years ago

His entire retort requires there being a valid other side. You and Jeff refuse to state what that side is.

Youre doing well this morning buddy. Looking totally intelligent and principled.

                1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

The entire retort claimed that you would say "What other side?" before launching into attacks.

Which is exactly what you did.

                  1. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

How can I deny there is an other side if you and Jeff can’t demonstrate there is an other side?

In small words. What side am I denying? What is the other side to justify this?

                    1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

                      Let's just start with this:

your article is lying by omission. The protest group did more than "sing and pray". They blocked access to the clinic and disrupted not just the abortion clinic business, but also the business of other establishments nearby.

                    2. Jefferson Paul   2 years ago

                      Serious question:

How did they "disrupt" the other businesses nearby? If this means the other businesses could hear them praying and singing psalms, it seems like a superfluous charge. If, on the other hand, they were harassing customers of the other businesses, then that seems like a legit, extra charge.

Also, when are you going to condemn Sarc for using dehumanizing language by calling others "dogs?" Isn't that what you say can lead to genocide?

                2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Almost every story has a valid "other side", at least one other side, generally more than one. In this case, this group of people was convicted BY A JURY - wouldn't you at least like to know what was the argument that was so persuasive to the jury?

                  1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

                    "BY A JURY"

                    Oh fucking wow!

                    1. Spiritus Mundi   2 years ago

You know who else was convicted by a jury...

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Let me guess. Juries which deliver decisions that you don't like are all corrupt and should be ignored. But juries which deliver decisions that you do like are a testament to the brave citizens standing up for justice.

                    3. sarcasmic   2 years ago

                      Just like elections.

Yup. The result of the 2024 election will either be:

                      "Trump wins!"

                      or

"The election was stolen from Trump!"

                    5. sarcasmic   2 years ago

                      Yup.

                    6. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

Sarc, jeff, can you point to the evidence? The video is below.

Juries are unfalliable? They aren’t corrupt? Lol.

And look at sarc who was finally admitting the NYC defamation jury may have gotten it wrong. Guess that prices Trump is a rapist now right jeff and sarc?

God damn you two are pure clowns. Lol.

Jeff. Saving this comment next time you criticize the death penalty. Just a heads up.

                    7. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Jeff. Saving this comment next time you criticize the death penalty. Just a heads up.

And anyone with a brain will see he was making a sarcastic remark about ML being a partisan hack, not a serious statement about all juries. That of course excludes you and the rest of the kennel.

                    8. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Did Jesse say something? All I heard was
BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK

                    9. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"And anyone with a brain will see he was making a sarcastic remark about ML being a partisan hack, not a serious statement about all juries."

Can't back your way out of this one, Sarckles. All part of your current slide to authoritarian fascism. Soon you'll be seig heiling and goosestepping beside your new pal Misek and Herr Jeffy.

              2. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"No, he described how Jesse would react to being asked about the other side. He didn’t say anything about the other side. Neither did I."

Here sarckles pretends that the implication wasn't made. You know, sarc, those posts haven't disappeared. They're still right there for anyone to read.

                1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

No shit. And it makes you look really fucking stupid when you continue to demand I defend something I never said. You see, I saw jeff's post on how Jesse would react. I loled because it was true. Then Jesse behaved exactly as predicted which made me laugh even more. Then you jumped in and demanded I defend something I didn't say, just like him, which made it even funnier. The fact that you continue to double-down on your stupidity just keeps me laughing.

                  1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Everyone can read exactly what you were doing. Lying about it now won't change anything.

                2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Here sarckles pretends that the implication wasn’t made.

The implication wasn't made. That was you projecting a strawman position onto sarc and onto me. As usual.

Criticizing you is not the same as defending the other team. You know this, but pretend otherwise.

              3. Pear Satirical   2 years ago

The other side? Like the fiery but mostly peaceful protests of 2020? Or about all those pro-Palestinian protesters? You know, the ones disrupting official business of the US government.

            2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

I'm not defending shit here. I'm mocking Jesse. And now you. You are his little lapdog poodle, always rushing to his aid whenever he picks another fight.

              1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Are you accusing me of being his Sarcasmic?

          2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

I don't know the full story. Maybe they are deserved, maybe they are not. In order to figure that out, I would have to know THE FULL STORY. As in, at a minimum, trying to figure out "the other side of the story".

As you have amply demonstrated, you remain intentionally ignorant of "the other side". You read DW and pro-life sites and then intentionally refuse to read anything else because "they are part of the regime" or whatever.

You are a tool of the right-wing. You are their obedient dog, repeating their narratives on command. Good boy! Good boy!

            1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"I don’t know the full story. Maybe they are deserved, maybe they are not."

For all the time you've spent here manufacturing excuses for fascism, you could have just read some in-depth articles on the case instead.

              1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

                Why haven't you?

                1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

I did. Women are threatened with eleven years in prison for protesting a Democratic Party baby abattoir.

                  Was there any more?

                  1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Really? What is the "in depth" article that you read on this event, beyond Jesse's DW article?

        3. Uilleam   2 years ago

You've never seen a calculus problem fatty.

        4. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Well, Jeffy, do you have anything for "the other side"?

Also, I sincerely doubt you've ever seen the inside of a calculus class much less a calculus textbook.

          1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

A better question might be, why isn't Jesse providing "the other side"?

            1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Because he's busy alternating between quizzical looks and barking.

            2. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

There is no "other side" to it you phony fucking weasel.

It's there in black and white. A legitimate protest by non-violent and peaceful protesters (as all sides admit) earns them eleven years.

That's the facts, you fucking faker.

This is why I call you a NAZI, Jeff, and Sarc is getting close too.

              1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Why did the jury vote to convict? What was the argument that was so persuasive to them? Maybe that argument could form the basis of "the other side".

                1. Pear Satirical   2 years ago

Apparently that there is no such thing as a non-violent crime. That was an actual argument the prosecution made.

              2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

There is no “other side” to it

Of course there is. YOU even admit as much, above, when you demand that I read "some in-depth articles on the case". What is the point of reading "in-depth articles on the case" if there is nothing more to be learned about it besides this DW article here that Jesse posted?

      2. JesseAz   2 years ago

What other side? The attorney for the civil rights division who charged this has made open public statements about going after anti abortion activists.

The videos were shown at trial. The primary witness was one of the protrstors turned prosecution witness after being threatened with these charges.

Not sure what other side you're asking for since it is on video.

        1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

          lmao

            1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

                Drunk already?

                1. JesseAz   2 years ago

                  Still, not already.

Sarc. Please explain the other side you are supporting. The only other side is political use of the state against their perceived enemies.

Ahh. I understand your lack of concern now.

                  1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

I don't have a side because it's not something I've been following in detail. I'm just laughing at jeff describing your typical behavior before you go and do exactly what he said you were going to do.

You're as predictable as the tides.

                    1. JesseAz   2 years ago

What is the other side youre laughing about sarc?

I knew you'd retreat to the "no opiniom" angle once your hypocrisy was exposed.

The article is linked. 30s to read. You can educate yourself elsewhere. Weird you "have no opinion" while attacking opinions of those who did take time to learn about the issue.

                      Truly principled.

                    2. sarcasmic   2 years ago

I'm laughing at how you behaved exactly as jeff said you would, and continue to do so, with zero self awareness.

                    3. JesseAz   2 years ago

And neither you nor Jeff have shown the other side you claim exists.

So tell us sarc. What is the other side? Why is this justified?

                2. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Asking Jesse for “the other side of the story” is like asking a dog to solve a calculus problem. All you get is a quizzical look, and then a lot of barking.

And then Jesse does exactly that. Hilarious.

                  1. JesseAz   2 years ago

Jeff nor you have provided the other side. Weird. So what is the other side sarc?

                    1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

                      So quizzical.

                    2. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

He won't answer, Jesse, because he has no clue.

                    3. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

So you can’t articulate the other side you and Jeff claim exist?

Does your joke even exist if you can't explain how it is a joke by showing there is another rational side?

This is just more evidence you don't have principles but narratives/teams.

                    4. sarcasmic   2 years ago (edited)

                      Now back to barking.

                    5. JesseAz   2 years ago

You always ask us to ask you what your thoughts are sarc. This is why we don't bother.

Why do you support these charges? What is the other side?

                    6. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Why do you support these charges?

Loaded questions definitely count as barking. Don't stop. This is hilarious.

                    7. JesseAz   2 years ago

You and Jeff claim there is another side to the story sarc, what is it?

                      Why can't you answer?

                    8. sarcasmic   2 years ago

You and Jeff claim there is another side to the story sarc

Nope. jeff simply stated how you would behave, and I laughed my ass off.

                      Why can’t you answer?

Because I'm not going to explain something I never claimed. This is so typical for you. You imagine some inference that wasn't said, claim your imaginary inference is what was said, and demand that your imaginary inference be defended. Then you get all pissy when nobody defends what you imagined they said.

                    9. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

Jeff’s whole assertion surrounds me denying there is another side. You still won’t even offer up what that side is.

                      Youre broken sarc.

                    10. sarcasmic   2 years ago

You were the one who was asked about the other side. Why didn't you answer? Because jeff nailed it when he said you'd quizzically cock your head in bewilderment before barking like a dog. What he didn't predict was the rest of the girls barking too.

                    11. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Sarc you're a troll and a liar. If you refuse to explain your allegations then it's time for you to grab your bottle and fuck off.

                      Jesse's poodle goes whoof whoof!

        2. Randy Sax   2 years ago

Answering honestly, physically blocking and restricting access is more serious than standing on the sideline advocating pro-life. Not worth 11 years, but that would be an example of something the DW isn't likely to highlight. When I say the "other side" what I mean is I'd like to know the full story. And I don't think the DW is necessarily a reliable narrator when it comes to these kinds of stories.

          1. JesseAz   2 years ago

You can view the court transcripts. The videos show, and they are available, people freely walking past the group. Nobody was ever blocked from access.

You won't find this in stories that aren't against this state led abuse as they don't want to promote or advertise the abuse. It isnt on AP or Reuters, as an example.

Where you will find the evidence and videos is on sites like DW or pro life websites. And yes the videos exist there.

The side who thinks this is outrageous are the ones advertising it.

Your ask of one side ignoring it as to what their side is, is a bit strange honestly.

          2. Social Justice is neither   2 years ago

But we can all agree that standing on the sidewalk, blocking access or not is completely more serious than blocking access to Federal buildings and hurling incendiary devices at it heedless of the people trapped inside.

        3. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

There is video of the incident. It’s long, but no signs of violence or damage in any part I saw. They are clearly breaking the law (intentionally), but eleven years is RIDICULOUS. They haven’t been sentenced yet so we’ll see.

      5. mad.casual   2 years ago

I’ve read about this on the DW, but I find it hard to believe that they are facing 11 years without violence or damage. If they are then this is despicable, but I would like to hear the other side’s story.

Weren't you the same "selective ambiguity" guy who was telling us the Texas Law's vagueness makes it prima facie unConstitutional and unenforceable because of the 1A right to free speech? Weird how that selective interpretation/ambiguity works out in defense of someone colluding with police to doxx people on Facebook at the local/State level but requires more careful consideration of BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! when it comes to people charged at the Federal Level by the DOJ for peaceably assembling in protest of abortion.

        1. Randy Sax   2 years ago

Yes, that was me. The other case was not ambiguous. I knew more about it. After learning more about this one I also think the outcome was despicable. Relax, man.

          1. mad.casual   2 years ago (edited)

The other case was not ambiguous.

Both the appeals court and the civil court would and did disagree with you. Just because you use the word ambiguous to obfuscate your selective interpretation doesn’t make your selective interpretation mysteriously consistent.

The two cases are not equally despicable outcomes and that’s the point, sarcasmic. One is a Federal law, passed by Congress, that’s criminalizing peaceable assembly, whether it imposes a 10 yr. sentence or not. The other is a State Law that vaguely, among other things criminalizes bribing a police officer for information. A law that you insisted is a violation of the 1A all the way to nonsense assertion that the civil court that said she couldn’t sue was ruling it as Constitutional.

You don’t have to tell me you are/were biased and ignorant, it’s rather self-evident. Again, even if you didn’t know about these specific protesters, there are a dozen other Federal level cases where the exact same act has been used in the exact same manner and, somehow, they all slipped your attention but Villarreal colluding with a police officer to doxx private citizens was either squarely in your wheelhouse of interest/advocacy or was so much more plainly moral and aligned with your constitutional scholarly sensibilities it didn’t require even a second glance.

Like with the rest of Reason, it doesn’t really matter the first time whether you were just plain ignorant or willfully stupid, but the more your selective stupidity piles up, the more it becomes indistinguishable from actual malice.

            1. Randy Sax   2 years ago

"nonsense assertion that the civil court that said she couldn’t sue was ruling it as Constitutional."

I'm starting to think you didn't read the article either. In the criminal trial the judge dismissed the case against her, (not the one she filed for suit), because the statue was unconstitutionally vague.

              1. mad.casual   2 years ago (edited)

The title and header of the article was “The 5th Circuit Says Criminalizing Journalism Is Not Obviously Unconstitutional The appeals court dismissed a civil rights lawsuit by a Laredo gadfly who was arrested for asking questions.”

Sullum wrote the sentence “After rehearing the case, nine of Ho’s colleagues disagreed, ruling that the officers had probable cause to arrest Villarreal and that the law was not so blatantly unconstitutional that they should have recognized it was inconsistent with the First Amendment.” and “Seven judges dissented.”

Your assessment that it’s a clear 1A violation doesn’t stand up to the facts and your misinterpretation, sorry, selective misunderstanding of the fact that the appeals court *couldn’t* rule the law Constitutional or unConstitutional, only whether she had standing to sue is similarly absurd.

It's like thinking the civil suit in the OJ Simpson case would make him criminally guilty or overturn laws against murder.

If the details of the protest and the trials are correct, this is an incredible outrage. Full disclosure: I am in favor of abortion.

The Biden administration has reportedly asked for an additional $14 billion to expand federal capacity to detain and deport more immigrants. The president has also called for more restrictions on migrants' ability to claim asylum.
    .
"What's been negotiated would—if passed into law—be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we've ever had in our country," said President Joe Biden in a Friday Statement. The deal would also increase the number of available visas by 250,000 reports The New York Times.

First. HR2 was already passed by the House.

Second, the Senate bill essentially legalizes 1.8M illegal entries. Likewise the administration already ignores current enforcement laws. Reason would do well to remember the Amnesty deal that ended up never implementing the agreed to birder enforcement.

Third, Biden could fix many of the issues by just evoking the dat 1 EOs he issued regarding the border.

    Europe erupting in anti-green protests.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/europe-erupts-widespread-farmer-protests-revolt-against-green-policies

Farmers in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Romania, and other countries across Europe are protesting radical leftist governments by obstructing major transport networks with tractors. This widespread populist movement is sweeping Europe at a time when over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda threaten the livelihoods of not just farmers but working-class people and comes several months before the European election cycle kicks off in June.

Some countries hit hardest by protests have been Germany, Italy, Belgium, and France. Protests are expected to spread to Spain and Portugal.

    According to Armstrong Economics:

Farmers throughout the world have been protesting the increasing regulations on agriculture. The media is barely covering the story, and when they do mention it, they say that the farmers are protesting due to Russia blocking supplies from Ukraine. This is simply untrue. The farmers are protesting against over-regulation, taxes, and the climate change agenda that is making it increasingly difficult for them to make a successful living.

Small farmers are upset that WEF elites such as Bill Gates, linked to the World Economic Forum, aim to reset the global food supply chain, a move that could render small-scale farming obsolete.

And discontent is quickly spreading across the West. As we noted earlier this week: "Mess In The West: 'Army Of God' Convoy Heads To US Border While EU Farmers Block Cities."

Unrest in the West is a symptom that leftist politicians are completely out of touch with the common man. Quickly, queue the next crisis. Is that the eruption of war or another virus?

    1. Idaho-Bob   2 years ago

The CC radicals have convinced pols and idiots that farming is the worst thing for the planet. There were reports this week saying backyard gardens produce more CO2 than industrial farming.

The European farmers are doing great work until the EU takes a lesson from Trudeau and seizes everything and gifts it to the WEF.

Survey: More Americans cite hardship from inflation

    https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_8d11225a-bfa8-11ee-a4bf-17bf3b46afa0.html

More Americans are citing economic hardship from the spike in prices in recent years, according to a new survey.

Prices have risen about 18% since President Joe Biden took office.

Gallup released the survey data from January, which showed that 63% of those surveyed either said it was a moderate or severe hardship to maintain their current standard of living.

That is up significantly from November of 2021, during Biden's first year in office, when only 45% said the same. The figure in question has steadily increased since then, surpassing 60% around the start of 2023.

Gallup's Economic Confidence Indicator has increased in the last two months, but is still lower than when Biden took office.

Poorer Americans report feeling the pain of inflation at even higher levels.

"Those in lower-income households (76%) are more likely than those in middle-income households (64%) and higher-income households (54%) to say price increases are causing them hardship," Gallup said. "However, income differences are even more pronounced when looking just at those saying the impact is severe.

"Lower-income Americans (30%) are three times as likely as high-income adults (10%) and almost twice as likely as middle-income adults (16%) to characterize high prices as a severe hardship."

While only 32% of Democrats named inflation as the top concern, less than the 45% of Republicans, Democrats still cited it as their number one concern.

In close second for Democrats was abortion access, while Republicans' second top concern is the border, according to the poll.

    1. Moderation4ever   2 years ago

Inflation is on the way down. Republicans worry about the border but want to take no real action to fix the problem. Both look like winners for the Democrats.

                    He did not claim that.

He said that Biden-like (aka leftist / progressive) economic theories and policies are what cause that sort of crazy hyperinflation, like they are experiencing in Argentina. Or Venezuela. Not that BIDEN'S actual specific particular policies have caused them there, or will here.

                    1. sarcasmic   2 years ago (edited)

He equated the increasing prices as a result of inflation with increasing inflation, saying that because inflation exists then it will reach triple digits.

Even if I misinterpreted what he said, he’s still wrong. Inflation is a monetary phenomenon that results from increasing the supply of money relative to the supply of stuff it can buy. The inflation we’re experiencing now is a result of Trump and Biden printing money and handing it out while telling people they couldn’t go to work. Then the handouts stopped and people were allowed to go back to work. And what do you know, inflation went down (delayed reaction). So it’s not a result of any continuing policies and we’re not heading towards hyperinflation. People need to relax.

Except when Democrats are in charge, then inflation is the result of their crappy policies until a Republican is elected, then inflation becomes a monetary phenomenon instead."

That’s a really stupid comparison on the Plug’s part (not really surprising), but Babbitt was no murder victim.

Here is the video of the shooting:

            https://www.nbcnews.com/video/capitol-shooting-that-led-to-ashli-babbitt-s-death-captured-on-video-99180613572

You can literally watch the mob batter down the doors and windows of the US capitol. Babbitt was the first one through the window, which is when the officer shot her, but if she had not been stopped she would have been the first of many. If you try to lead a mob through the window of any building that you and your friends have just finished shattering, the people guarding that building are entirely within their rights to repel you by force, including by shooting you.

(Before you start spouting your usual bullshit about the three officers in the hallway surrounded by the crowd offering tacit permission for the mob two batter down doors and windows, consider for a second that making that argument makes you sound even stupider than the Plug. Desist.)

The wildly understated inflation during the Biden presidency is embedded in the prices we pay. It doesn't go away when the rate of increase drops. For prices to return to the Trump era we would have to have 20 percent deflation. See how that works? Asshole.

        1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Nobody is claiming that a reduced rate of inflation means prices are returning to pre-inflation levels. It means that prices aren't increasing as fast as they were when inflation peaked.

        1. DesigNate   2 years ago

          The logic IS simple.

          Inflation is bad.
The Democrats took the spending of 2020 and made it their baseline for two years.
          Therefore inflation is their fault.

(We probably would have had a short bout of inflation due to the increased spending of 2020, but I doubt it would have persisted for 3+ years.)

(That additional spending never would have happened if the government, spearheaded by the Democrats in two of the largest state economies, hadn’t shot the economy in the face and then slit its throat for good measure.)

Banning cops from enforcing the law.

    https://cwbchicago.com/2024/01/chicago-state-representative-propose-ban-police-enforcement-traffic-violations.html

A state representative from Chicago has introduced legislation that would prohibit police officers across Illinois from stopping motorists for a host of violations, including expired plates, tinted windows, improper lane usage, and even speeding up to 25 mph over the posted limit.

Rep. Justin Slaughter (27th), chair of the state House Judiciary-Criminal Committee, introduced the bill on Monday. No other lawmakers have signed on as co-sponsors.

In addition to barring cops from enforcing speeding violations that aren’t flagrant enough to become criminal matters, Slaughter wants to prevent officers from pulling people over for:

    * failing to display license plates or stickers
    * operating with an expired registration sticker
    * not wearing a seat belt
    * improper lane usage that does not meet the criminal threshold
    * failing to comply with “certain requirements concerning vehicle lamps”
    * excessive window tints
    * defective mirrors
    * obstructed windshields or defective windshield wipers
    * defective bumpers
    * excessive exhaust

Now while I can see stopping cops from pulling over a vehicle some of these (exhaust & window tint, really?), things like lights are distinctly a safety hazard for other motorists/bicyclists/pedestrians they encounter.

How can you ticket someone if you can't stop them?

        1. MollyGodiva   2 years ago

Possibility require all motor vehicles to have a unique identifier letter/number on them. Perhaps something plate like.

          1. Spiritus Mundi   2 years ago

And if they don't display the plate or use a fake one? Can't pull them over.

          2. Minadin   2 years ago

In Missouri, we've deemed that to be unconstitutional, because we require you to ticket the driver of the car for moving violations, not the owner of the car. Even though in many cases they may be the same person. Assuming that the driver is the owner removes due process protections.

The City of St. Louis decided to try to do an end-around on the state appeals court decision by re-defining both running red lights and speeding as non-moving violations. The state supreme court told them to pound sand.

            1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Likewise in Wisconsin and Michigan. The only states around here that allow use of the cameras are as follows:

Illinois: 8 counties for red lights (Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Kane, Will, Madison, St Clair); 1 city for speed, safety and school zones only (Chicago); construction zones (a Ford Transit Connect with a big number showing your speed on top).

Iowa: Red light and speed in some municipalities. Le Clare is particularly egregious here as they put a speed camera on a small section of I-80 near the IL/IA state line.

I believe the cameras are illegal in Indiana as well.

          3. Minadin   2 years ago

Also, you might want to note above, the proposed bill doesn't allow people to be pulled over for a couple of items, which creates a fatal flaw in your design:

            * failing to display license plates or stickers
            * operating with an expired registration sticker

It's listed above. Near the top.

          4. Diane Reynolds (Paul. they/them)   2 years ago

Right, because every speeding violation of "up to 25mph", the officer is in the exact correct position to make notation of the license plate, and record it in his log book, and then produce a legally binding summons to the actual driver of the fucking car.

Do you even LIVE in the real world? Do you realize how many speeding tickets would be thrown out simply because the person who owned the vehicle would claim they weren't driving? The ticket is issued to the driver not the owner of the vehicle.

Once again, Libertarianism for the fucking Eye of Sauron Surveillance State.

I can see it now, another 2000 word thinkpiece on how facial recognition technology, in car cameras, license plate scanners and geofenced GPS tracking can solve all of these issues... "if done right".

As someone who has been pulled over at a few Illinois county lines in the past for going 5 over, I can understand the frustration people feel sometimes. But, what is the point of posting a speed limit if you can't pull anyone over for:

speeding up to 25 mph over

Even on an interstate highway, going 70, someone going 95 is potentially dangerous. On a residential street, someone going 50 in a 25 is risking murdering pedestrians.

      1. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   2 years ago

25 over on certain interstates in the west would get you to 105 mph.

Note that they claim that the border is "wide open", that the situation is "out of control", that the migrants are literal invaders, that they are terrorists and importing fentanyl and raping cute blond coeds and just generally horrible horrible people.

So naturally, when presented with a plan that would do something about it, they reject it.

So evidently the border situation isn't as dire as they claim it is - if you REALLY THOUGHT that there were terrorists INVADING via the southern border, why would you say no to any reasonable plan to stop that?

The proposed "bipartisan" bill would codify allowing up to 5,000 a day into the country. That's around 1.8 million a year. That's not border enforcement. That's just using the term so that the legacy media and Dems can say, "look, we think this is a crisis, and we worked hard to introduce a bill to address this crisis, but the dastardly Repubs just won't allow it because they would rather lie to the public about wanting to solve this crisis." Pretty much as you, M4E, just did.

It would be like the Repubs introducing a bipartisan bill (has the support of maybe one or two Dems) to give abortion rights to everyone in the country (what the Dems want). The bill, however, makes abortion legal nationwide only in the first day after conception, but illegal after that. "Hey, we did what so many on the left have asked for and made the choice to have an abortion legal everywhere. Why are the Dems fighting on this. It's as though they would rather have the issue not solved so they can motivate their voting base that get what they were asking for."

That would be a very dishonest framing of the fictional abortion access bill, but would be very much like how the media and Dems are portraying this "bipartisan" "border enforcement" bill.

Black folks aren’t a political monolith. However, the existence of Black conservatives has always been a baffling one—especially now as the Republican party goes out of its way to court and uplift white nationalists.

The GOP has been wholly consumed by MAGA idealism, which includes white supremacy, xenophobia, control over women’s bodies, capitalistic values and a complete lack of morality. Sadly, this hasn’t stopped Black politicians and celebrities from believing that it’s in their best interest.>i/>

    Commentary
Sometime in the last ten years, the crunchy left decided that average people were far too happy and satisfied leaving the grocery store with 50 pounds of groceries piled in plastic bags. They decided that such joy is surely bad for the environment. So they decided to ban them.
I’m not sure that it was any more complicated than that. It’s been this way for a while, reminding us of H.L. Mencken’s definition of Puritanism: “The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” Mother nature surely doesn’t like that so let’s just make it stop. We need more misery around here!
    Story continues below advertisement
    AD
So some years ago, states started to ban them. We all had to revert to brown paper bags which tear and are awkward to carry. Clearly an inferior product. Another solution was to bring your own bag, which is invariably made of, you guessed it, plastic. So that was replacing one kind of plastic with another.
If you live in a blue state, you know about this very well. You have to keep all sorts of bags in your closet or car and remember to haul them into the grocery store. But then you forget and you have to buy more. Now you have two extra bags, and this is to add to your growing collection at home.
It’s all a bit of a peasant way to shop and that’s the whole point, to make you feel poor and grubby, which, for some reason I cannot understand, is very fashionable among left-wing, academic-influenced communities. They are saving the planet, don’t you know, and probably curbing carbon emissions to forestall the existential threat of... climate change!

    The Great Growth Hoax

    The Great Growth Hoax
Except that there is one problem. Freedonia Market Research—at the behest of the disposable plastic bag industry, of course—has taken a close look at New Jersey’s program and concluded that the new plastic bags you slog around require much more plastic than the old thin and brilliant bags we used at the store in the old days. They discovered that the new bags are used only two or three times by 90 percent of people, so of course they have to keep buying more and more.
So get this. These new non-woven polypropylene bags have increased greenhouse gas emissions by 500 percent. Whoops!
    Story continues below advertisement
Probably none of this surprises you now that you read it. After all, the bulk of actual plastic related to the grocery comes from the products themselves. Think of it. Every bit of meat, everything made of bread, every box has a plastic inside for freshness, and even your vegetables are put in bags to get them to the counter. The whole place is a plastic mecca. How much difference would the carry-out bags really make?
The point, as it turns out, has nothing to do with actually reducing plastic consumption but rather imposing coercive behaviors that take away conveniences and replacing them with a virtuous signal that everyone can understand. They do this to us even when it makes no sense at all.
We should anticipate this effect by now. Name any policy you can think of that is designed to somehow “save” resources—wind turbines, electric cars, solar panels—and you can pretty much guarantee that deploying them will be less efficient overall than the process which it replaces. It just keeps happening.
The plastic bag frenzy of the last ten years has some odd twists and turns. Remember when the world was freaking out about COVID germs? In my community, plastic bags had already been banned but now the germophobic pearl-clutchers grew concerned that the polyester bags people were slogging into the store carried bad germs on them. Once that word got out, the city council instantly abolished the very thing they had spent years encouraging.
    Story continues below advertisement
Suddenly the whole community was back to using disposable plastic bags at checkout, because they were deemed to be more sanitary than the stuff people were bringing in from outside. None of it makes sense but there it is.
So there were a few merciful months when we could bag our groceries the way we used to, slipping them in bag after bag and hurling them around our arms to the point that on two arms we could conceivably lug 100 pounds of groceries in without tears and struggles and fruits rolling all over the floor. Those were the good old days.
But once the COVID hysteria died down, and especially once the idea that the bug could live on surfaces was thoroughly debunked, guess what happened? The all-knowing city council issued a new edict that once again banished plastic at the checkout counter and poked people to dig up their old polyester bags again and bring them to the store.
In other words, they bounced from one bogus belief to another bogus belief and then back again, all in the name of signaling virtuous actions to save the planet and the human race from extinction. So far as I know, no one thought to do anything about the tons of plastic used to wrap food in the store. That is what it is.
    Story continues below advertisement
The people who do this stuff are quite fascinating creatures. Let’s say they were in a Brazilian village and shopping for meat and stumbled upon a farmers market with open cuts around which flies were flying. They would be grossed out and not eat a bite. And yet here we have exactly what they are going for: no plastic, no energy use, no artificial anything. Still, they won’t touch it.
What classifies as clean and worthy to this crowd is malleable and largely socially determined, having nothing to do with science or even reality.
So will this new study make any difference in the New Jersey law? Absolutely not. The state government will go on its blind path toward stupidity without a thought. It’s how they do it, because pretending to care about big issues like climate change is far more important than doing anything actually to fix the supposed problem.
The plastic bag at checkout was and is a marvelous innovation: clean, convenient, and surprisingly recyclable as trash bags in the average American home. We should bring them all back and stop this ridiculous charade of bringing one’s own bags everywhere. It’s degrading and pointless—not that this ever stops the new breed of woke puritans who have seized control of our lives and standard of living.
    Story continues below advertisement
Let’s conclude with a slightly amusing blast from the past. Remember when plastic straws were considered terrible and we should all carry metal straws? That was before COVID. Then a woman in England died after falling and impaling herself, which went through her eye and into her brain. Then a young boy who suffered a life-threatening injury when a metal straw plunged into his throat and artery.
And so now we use wet and soggy paper straws which aren’t really straws at all. Blech. What can we say but “man’s inhumanity to man”? At least the sea turtles are safe.

I'm going to mildly disagree with Jeffrey Tucker here.

We all had to revert to brown paper bags which tear and are awkward to carry.

I've always found, even in high school, as a grocery store bagger, that those plastic bags are made from the thinnest, cheapest plastic film they could find. The paper bags might rip, but usually didn't. The plastic bags almost universally ripped and tore. As for convenience, they do make paper bags with handles. The paper bags carry far more than the plastic bags, usually in the range of 3-4 plastic bags. They also stand up better in the trunk, especially in modern SUVs. I always found it easier to protect eggs, chips, and bread in paper than in plastic.

      1. Eeyore   2 years ago

I've lost $150 dollars to paper bag failures. They are made from the cheapest thinnest paper they can find. The 64oz pickle jar that shattered right at the store exit must have been fun for them to clean up.

        1. mad.casual   2 years ago

It's not even a contest as far as I can tell both anecdotally and empirically. I routinely come across plastic bags and containers where I'm the weakest link. I can put more mass in the container than I can carry and the container handles it. It virtually never happens with paper. This includes, e.g., distributing 90 lbs. of groceries among 9 plastic bags vs. 9 or more paper bags. I wouldn't even try it with the paper.

Anecdote aside, plastic milk jugs have largely relegated wax paper cartons to the creamer section and school lunches. Chips largely come in mylar or plastic bags unless you're an artisanal tortilla chip maker. Wax treated butcher paper was generally more durable than parchment paper and isn't even a thing anymore, if it's waterproofed in any way it's polyethylene and if it's meant for long-term/freezer storage they double up on the polyethylene.

The idea that paper is lb. for lb. or dollar for dollar more durable than plastic seems between ill considered and anachronistic.

      2. Eeyore   2 years ago

Paper is also useless if you live in the city and commute to the store without a car. I would use a backpack until the store banned backpacks.

      3. mad.casual   2 years ago

Weird. All my 50-70 lb. bags of softener salt, concrete, tube sand, and minerals for 40 yrs. were either plastic with a paper shell or pure plastic. Even the cubic yard construction debris haul-away bags were plastic rather than paper.

Of course, the 25-40 lb. bags of animal food and and the even less capable and durable grocery bags were relatively pure paper, sometimes double lined, but I say relatively as they generally had a hefty dose of screen printing and, even then, virtually always tore through the paper sides and never through a glued or otherwise polymer-sealed seam or joint.

Almost like I could look up costs per unit mass and tensile indexes in order to see whether your grocery store was cheaping out on plastic while eating it's hat on paper, but I don't really have to.

I believe we can all agree on that because if we don't Soros, Obama, the Bushes, Barbara Streisand, Rob Reiner, McConnell would have to get off their asses and do some manual labor, and no one wants that on their conscience.

Oh noes! Rob Reiner having to do actual real physical work would be utter and abject cruelty. The man would have a heart attack before he even mowed half a row of a lawn.

If you haven't already seen it, I recommend watching the South Park episode Butt Out, from 2003. It's about the hypocrisy and evil of the anti-smoking lobby, featuring Rob Reiner. Very funny and really skewers Reiner.

OK, I've seen a shitload of coverage of MAGA going apeshit over Swift.

I've never actually seen anyone who genuinely gives a shit about Swift.

Is it me, or is this another case of trying to paint everyone with some fringe weirdo thing or other that's happening online?

    1. Dillinger   2 years ago

not you. we're in "it's not happening."

The whole thing feels and awful lot like yet another teen girl social contagion wave that we should all just totally not worry about because they're just kids.

I can't tell anymore. The world has gotten too weird to parse.

Yeah, I've spent so many years being told I was racist for trading rare Pepes, or whatever, or that flags, symbols, hand gestures, words, or things absolutely everyone has done, always, my whole life, are white supremecist dog whistles, that I can't really suss out what is 100% manufactured to brand me as a racist and what is picked up (very often from 4chan trolling) and then exploited to brand me as a racist.

This feels more like a 4Chan thing that is being taken too seriously, but Notthebee is so far into Poe's law that I can never be sure anymore.

    >>The Cato Institute's David Bier noted in a blog post earlier this month that the Biden administration has deported a higher share of border crossers than the Trump administration.

David Bier is an idiot who hides proportionality to make his weak point.

    >>A rising chorus of MAGA influencers are arguing that the admittedly inexplicable popularity of Swift is really a sinister federal plot to throw the 2024 election to President Joe Biden.

misspelled "mainstream media" and your bias is very brightly showing

  49. Dillinger   2 years ago

    >>The conspiracy theorizing about Swift does raise the question

ya: How fucking desperate can a Re-Elect Campaign be?

    >>Biden cites some timeless wisdom from learned sage Elmo.

B is the only adult on earth who could learn wisdom from Elmo

    >>California's heavily regulated, heavily taxed legal marijuana industry still leaves room for a thriving black market

duh, forever more profitable to sell it out the back door

Sesame Street is probably right at the limit of Biden's cognitive abilities now.
