You Can't Fix Him (the IRS)
Plus: Tanks in Gaza, quitting the DSA, Gen Z hates a sex scene, and more...

We told you to work on this: Just this week, the Government Accountability Office released a report studying whether the nation's tax collectors are set up to use their cool $80 billion infusion of cash, doled out over the next decade, properly.
The report roughly boils down to: We told you to fix these things, so why haven't you yet?
It's actually incredible the number of problems that government auditors have been flagging for the IRS for years on end, to no avail.
For example: "IRS's policy is to generally respond to correspondence within 30 days of receipt. Responses that take longer than 45 days are considered late, or what IRS calls overage. As of the end of the 2022 filing season, about 55 percent of IRS's correspondence inventory was overage."
And: "As we reported in December 2022, IRS customer service representatives answered less than one out of five taxpayer calls seeking live assistance during the 2022 filing season." Last year, the Treasury Secretary "announced that Treasury was committing IRS to an 85 percent level of service [percentage of calls answered] for the 2023 filing season, the highest in the last decade." (Going from roughly 20 percent to 85 percent will be a mighty big jump for these beleaguered employees.)
Also: "Between the start of fiscal year 2010 and March 2023, we issued 451 recommendations to IRS related to protecting taxpayer information. As of October 2023, IRS had taken steps to address the gaps in safeguards we identified and implemented 85 percent of our recommendations." Phrased differently, over the course of 13 years, the IRS still didn't implement 15 percent of recommendations.
This is all unsettlingly par for the course. After all, it was only in July 2022 that the IRS finally worked "to prevent employees from saving data to external devices, making it harder for taxpayer information to be removed from IRS's network." Given that an IRS contractor leaked confidential taxpayer information about some of the wealthiest Americans to major news organizations in 2021, it's fairly shocking that the agency seems to want plaudits for having taken 11 months to secure a major vulnerability.
As you might expect, retention is in trouble—"the agency loses about 23 percent of new recruits within 2 or 3 years"—and the IRS has mostly failed to work on improving its security systems. This is all after the agency blew past the initial deadline for releasing its report on how to use the Inflation Reduction Act funds. Deadlines for thee, but not for me.
One might be left wondering what the $3.2 billion in taxpayer services was for, if reps still can't pick up the phone, or the $25.3 billion in improving IT systems, if taxpayer data still isn't secured.
Middle East update: Today, the United Nations General Assembly will vote on whether to call for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. It's unclear what exactly this nonbinding resolution will do. Overnight, the United States fired on eastern Syria, targeting facilities allegedly used by Iranian forces. Strikes on U.S. targets have been frequent in that area over the course of the last few days.
In Gaza, "the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said that basic services were crumbling, medicine was running out, food and water were scarce, and sewage had begun overflowing on the streets of Gaza," reports The Wall Street Journal.
Israeli tanks went into the Strip again last night, though few details were released as to why. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported Friday "that it had conducted airstrikes against 250 Hamas targets in Gaza over the past day" purportedly hitting "tunnels, launch sites and command centers."
A Shabbat table was set up in Times Square with empty place settings for each hostage. The IDF now reports that the hostage count is 229, higher than previously reported. Two more were released this week, including 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husband remains a hostage in Gaza. That brings the total released to four.
Scenes from New York:
Competition in all things, even fuchka. (Jackson Heights is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city.)
QUICK HITS
- Speaker Mike Johnson's (R–La.) first act? The House just passed a bill that "would cut billions of dollars in consumer rebates for energy efficiency upgrades" and "rescinds more than $5.5 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act," per Bloomberg.
- ICYMI: Zach Weissmueller and I interviewed Marcos Falcone about Javier Milei's presidential candidacy, Peronism, inflation, and Argentina's future.
- Congestion pricing and the interstate legal battle playing out between New York and New Jersey.
- From The Nation, written by one of the founding members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA): "I left to protest the DSA leadership's politically and morally bankrupt response to the horrific Hamas October 7 anti-Jewish pogrom that took the lives of 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and saw over 200 hostages carried off to Gaza, both groups of victims including children and infants."
- Yes:
I love this point.
A lot of folks try to predict technology as if new ideas only create clean upward trends.
Nope. New ideas create reactions, ricochets, backlashes. Concerts and vinyl boomed during the music streaming revolution. https://t.co/4TpeHDOE2k

- Gen Z wants to see fewer sex scenes in TV and movies, says a new study from UCLA. Roughly 44 percent of people polled "felt that 'romance in media is overused.'" with 47.5 percent saying "that sex is not necessary to the majority of TV show and movie plots."
- Interesting piece on the soured collaboration between Kanye West and Adidas: "Working with Mr. West, one of the most influential artists in the world—a 'master of spectacle,' as one former executive put it—meant being tied to a provocative, polarizing and sometimes unstable personality."

Bureaucrats fight over the definition of broken.
Working as intended. Which means paying people not to work. Their role in The Resistance and the liberal groups they work for are more important. Tax records don't leak themselves.

You should care more about Robert E. Lee than Israel.

Is Robert E. Lee presently being held hostage?
No, his statue was removed and melted down in secret as an assault on American identity.
But fuck Americans, right?
And it will be turned into another piece of artwork that will be sure to be a total insult.
Staute of Biden in his aviators.
Transgebder George Floyd with a halo.
damn that made me LOL.
Anthony Fauci COVID Memorial Statue
A la Atlas, with a giant COVID virus on his shoulders.
I don't think that should have been done. But in terms of, ya know, urgency, people being held hostage overseas tend to get some priority. There's also some Americans who are held hostage-but fuck them because fuck Israel?
Your such an obedient subject
Or I just say "fuck you" to anyone who tells me what I'm allowed to care about.
There's that typical strawman based libertarian "edginess"
This is the same process Pol pot pushed called year 0. It's all about wiping away the history and replacing it with a false history
Yea, but foreign peoples are fighting in foreign lands, so all Americans should forget about the war being waged upon them by their own government and prioritize care for the foreign enthno-nation instead.
That's apparently the "thoughtful" position...
^This^
I have no issues with helping allies, but Nardz is right. The USG is waging war on its citizens, and we need to push back. Hard, if needed.
How are these things mutually exclusive?
Hell, given that it's the same worthless fucks that wanted the statue gone, destroyed, and repurposed, as are going about cheering for Hamas and their barbarism against Israeli civilians, I'd say that "fighting back" against any of it is actually linked.
It's the same enemy.
No, it's not.
A lot of the worthless fucks who wanted the statues gone, and worked to remove them, are whining about how their worthless fuck allies cast them as oppressors now instead of sacred victims and that their previously sacred victim ethno-state on the other side of the world is considered the oppressor.
Make no mistake about Israelians' true loyalties.
At best they see the US as an economic zone where their tribe is free to reign. At worst, America is an evil land of white supremacists that must be cleansed.
Palestinian supporters are merely a subset of the iconoclasts.
Robert E Lee's statue should have been torn down decades ago, better late than never. I can't believe that we ever allowed the south to put up statues of confederate assholes in the first place. After WWII we didn't allow the Germans to put up statues of nazis.
And yet FDR statues exist in the US.
Let? So, who is we in that sentence and what power do they have to dictate what others can or cannot put up?
There's one of Wehrner Von Braun right in front of NASA.
Don't harsh on Pluggo's narrative by invoking statues to actual Nazis.
Yeah.... I don't see Israel as having that attitude.
Is a goodly portion of their electorate a bunch of no nothing leftists? yes! Do they want to 'cleanse' the US because it is rife with supremacists? I just dont see it... and am frankly surprised by your passion on this point.
Can't figure that one out even reading the comments. A little help?
Can I care about both?
Is that permissable?
Sure, your priorities are up to you.
Given that there's functionally fuck all I can do about either of them...

Today, the United Nations General Assembly will vote on whether to call for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
The United Nations springing into action!
Pouncing?
That is horseshit = cease fire. Why help Hamas?
Israel has a simple war aim: physically obliterate Hamas within Gaza.
Hamas delendum est.
The crowder bits are halarious. He will play a clip from an action movie, ie Braveheart where the noble slits Mel Gibson wife's neck then right before the rreveng part a cop blows a whistle walks in and calls cese fire
Israel has a simple war aim: physically obliterate Hamas within Gaza.
An interesting question to ask is why there is no effort to go after Hamas' leadership in Qatar.
After 9/11 the US demanded that the Taliban stop harboring al-Qaeda's leadership and hand them over for justice. Why is this not happening with Qatar?
Qatar is too important to the MIC neocons.
*ding ding*
Because Israel can't do shit about Hamas leadership in Qatar.
They blistered too much after the attack. Understandable, but unwise.
I think they're coming to the realization that they can't do anything more than bomb the hell out of Gaza and kill some Palestinians unless/until they're 100% certain the US will go all in on war.
I don't think they're there yet, but have to keep up "reasonable" rhetoric about targeting Hamas for optics.
I think they’re coming to the realization that they can’t do anything more than bomb the hell out of Gaza and kill some Palestinians unless/until they’re 100% certain the US will go all in on war.
I suspect they started with that realization.
You can kill as many people in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, or Jordan as you care to. Touching oil-producing Gulf States is where the world draws a hard line.
Does Mossad not have assassins any longer?
I suspect Israeli capabilities are a far cry from what they've been in the past
Because we still have AFCENT operating out of Al Udeid Air Base, is why. We're not going to risk access to a strategic asset for the sake of potentially embarrassing the Emir.
Indeed.
Are you sure about that = An interesting question to ask is why there is no effort to go after Hamas’ leadership in Qatar.
I don't think Israel's 'Hamas Hunt' is confined to just Gaza. Nor should it be. Stay tuned.
Oh I'll be staying tuned, but if Israel were serious about going after Hamas' leadership that's the first thing they would do rather than wasting time and resources invading Gaza. It's not like it's a secret where these guys live, and Qatar ain't a big place.
As Red Rocks points out, there's a significant US military presence in Qatar, and the US isn't going to allow Israel to risk that relationship by conducting strikes in Qatar.
You don't need military strikes in Qatar. Once upon a time, Mossad used to deal with assholes like these in a much, much quieter way. That may be how you take out the Hamas leadership.
That's what I mean by "strikes." Dropping actual bombs on Qatar is so far out of the question as to not even be a hypothetical.
But if Hamas leaders in Qatar start showing up dead from sniper fire, that creates awkwardness in the US relationship with the Sheikh, who is unlikely to pretend he doesn't know what's going on.
I actually think that probably the bigger hope here is that the other members of the GCC decide they've finally had enough and take it upon themselves to do something about him, but I'm not holding my breath.
You don't need sniper fire. Just good old-fashioned poisons, disappearances, slit throats, and the like. Make them look like crime victims.
That would be nice, but my money says Israel isn't going to do that.
Because we live in a kinder gentler age now.
SUDS...
Just get them to imbibe, ingest, or otherwise invade their body with something that will cause profound myocarditis...
Sit them in a giant jacuzzi with a couple nubile gals and let nature do the rest.
I do love how cease fires have turned into no retaliation when attacked by a favored country or people.
The wrestling low blow of state craft.
They must think Israel is winning.
And Hamas will certainly observe the cease fire, until it’s in their best political and military interest to violate it (and then blame Islamic Jihad or some other group).
The House just passed a bill that "would cut billions of dollars in consumer rebates for energy efficiency upgrades..."
United Nations Hamas circlejerk, eat your heart out.
Congestion pricing and the interstate legal battle playing out between New York and New Jersey.
Time for Jerksey to shut down a bridge or two.
Use Chris Christie as a traffic barricade. I'm sure he's good for at least two lanes.
I left to protest the DSA leadership's politically and morally bankrupt response to the horrific Hamas...
Maybe if they'd slaughtered people for the goal of a socialist utopia we could pop some champaign.
For 41 years, he didn't understand that socialism was politically and morally bankrupt.
They racked up one hell of a body count during the 20th Century. Made Hitler look like a piker.
Eggs, omelettes.
Walter Duranty's quote nowadays would be: "If you want salmonella, you have to break a few eggs and cut off the heat to cook them."
The National Socialists don’t count as socialists?
They did not govern exactly as socialists, but who does? That’s a feature of socialism - it becomes a dictatorship.
The National Socialists don’t count as socialists?
In important ways, no. The whole point of fascism was that it was the "third way" - i.e. it blended capitalism and socialism together in the hopes that this could unite people and forestall a communist revolution.
This is what makes it such a beautiful chameleon for modern political sparring - both left and right can accuse the Nazis of having been on the other side, when they actually considered themselves centrists.
It's still state control of industry and business. I don't see nearly as large a gap as the left likes to claim.
It’s still state control of industry and business.
It is. "Managed capitalism" as we say today. A government-directed economy that keeps profit in private hands. Right-wingers can fixate on the first part, left-wingers on the second.
"In important ways, no. The whole point of fascism was that it was the “third way” – i.e. it blended capitalism and socialism together in the hopes that this could unite people"
You're not wrong, but it was still definitely socialism. The Nazi's had successfully nationalized 45% of German industry by the time WWII started, and had a post-war goal of 95%.
The difference with Communism being that the corporations would be partners in their own nationalization, rather than victims, and that sole-proprietorships would still be legal and respected.
Agreed that if your poles are "free markets" and "government-managed economy," then National Socialism is a flavor of socialism.
If your poles are "Capitalism" and "Soviet-style Communism," then National Socialism is a compromise position.
This is why if you are pro-free market, National Socialism looks an awful lot like the other varieties of socialism, but if you are anti-Capitalist, it looks an awful lot like other varieties of government-protected Capitalism.
It did no such thing.
It's the difference between 90 percent state control of everything and 95 percent.
It’s the difference between 90 percent state control of everything and 95 percent.
No. It's the difference between an internationalist movement toward state ownership of the means of production with total erasure of profit motive and a nationalist movement toward state influence over markets that remain in private hands.
It was presented as the "third way" because it rejects both laissez faire capitalism and anti-capitalist socialist internationalism.
1. It was a nationalist movement - that then tried to conquor the world?
2. The markets didn't remain in 'private hands' though - only on paper. In reality the government directed everything.
3. It didn't reject anti-capitalist socialist internationalism though. They a) allied with the Soviet Union for a while and, b), uh, tried to conquer Europe with their fascist allies - who, you might recall, were 'fascists' because they didn't think the socialists had the courage of their convictions. All that 'everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state' stuff.
The name of the movement was, literally, National *Socialism*.
Uh, Hitler was a National Socialist too.
Yeah, he’s basically admitting that the only reason he’s leaving DSA is because the party supports Hamas against Israel, not because of their actual socio-economic positions. Which is fine in a vacuum, as there’s nothing wrong with leaving an organization that’s explicitly targeting your own ethnic group. But he certainly doesn’t see anything explicitly wrong with targeting white people for the same eliminationist agenda.
This is a situation where left-wing Jews who called themselves “white” for decades when convenient, in order to jawbone gentile whites into accepting their political agenda against “white supremacy,” and "anti-colonialism," and then shifting to calling themselves “Jews” to try and differentiate themselves for the same cynical purpose of deflecting fire from minority groups, are now finding that they can’t redirect that ethnic animus they gleefully stoked.
As much of a twerp as Ben Shapiro can be, at least as a right-winger he recognizes the double standard of complaining about white supremacy and then trying to beg off on that when you’re the one that ends up being painted with that brush.
Also, the absolute audacity of this piece of shit in this statement here:
My membership in SDS ended in 1969, when I was 18 years old, without any input or agency on my part, when the organization collapsed around me in a chaotic maelstrom of rival manifestos, mass walkouts, fervid chanting, and a few fistfights, all of which scattered the group’s thousands of members to the winds.
The fuckhead has been aligned with communist front groups since the 60s, saw first-hand what happens when his side goes into a purity spiral (which itself resulted in the rise and activities of radical left domestic terrorist groups through the early 1980s), and honestly believed it wouldn't happen again through the promotion of critical theory and anti-white/anti-western scholarship over the last 40-plus years.
I think a lot of this has more to do with the imagery than it does with the specific ethnic group involved. Decolonization is all well and good when it's just a magic word to assuage your liberal guilt, but it's a lot less appealing when it means wholesale rape and murder proudly posted online while all your buddies cheer and point at you and say you're next. Far left rhetoric didn't change at all between the 7th and the 8th, but the response to it (including by many Jewish and non-Jewish leftists) did.
Jews are supposed to be THE sacred victim.
How many holocaust museums do we have in the US? An event that didn't happen here and directly involved very few Americans.
Postmodern society is crafted from 2 foundation myths: the holocaust and american slavery.
This is the first time those have come into real, significant conflict because so many "black and brown" apparatchiks have risen up the ranks and consider the Palestinians closer kin than jews.
Now they're on the receiving end of the bullshit tactics they've always used against others.
Jews are supposed to be THE sacred victim.
Obviously not. Again, there has been absolutely no change in far left rhetoric. They are not any more antisemitic today than they were a month ago. The only reason anyone is getting "cancelled" for celebrating mass murder in the name of a leftist cause is because people saw it on video this time.
You're missing the point.
Obviously Jews aren't THE sacred victim to a large faction of the left anymore. But so long as no conflict between the 2 myths was present, Jews could continue taking advantage of slavery's input to advance themselves as top victim. Now that there's conflict between the two, jews are starting to see its not going how it was supposed to go.
"Postmodern society is crafted from 2 foundation myths: the holocaust and american slavery."
You might want to clarify that statement before Pluggo and Jeff get a hold of it.
No.
"Decolonization" and "white supremacy" are more than just generalized rhetorical devices, though--they've been explicitly weaponized, especially in academia, as a means of attacking and subverting American society as the the left took over the nation's cultural institutions.
Although they obviously weren't the only ones involved in the movement (Angela Davis and Corky Gonzales come most readily to mind here, as well as Paulo Friere, Kimberle Crenshaw and Frances Cress Welsing), left-wing Jews have been at forefront of pushing these narratives, from Herbert Marcuse (who taught Davis) and the other Frankfurt School communist refugees, to the more overtly violent individuals such as John Jacobs, Bill Ayers, and Bernardine Dorhn, to those such as Gayle Rubin, Judith Butler, Tim Wise, and Noel Ignatiev in more recent times. Wise, in fact, is currently pushing the Hamas line and still sperging about white supremacy in his Twitter account, only because that cannon hasn't been turned on him yet.
“Decolonization” and “white supremacy” are more than just generalized rhetorical devices, though–they’ve been explicitly weaponized, especially in academia, as a means of attacking and subverting American society as the the left took over the nation’s cultural institutions.
True, but I think the Davis/Ayers types grossly overestimated the level of real commitment they were engendering vs. the amount of LARPing they were encouraging.
I was wandering the campus I work at the other day and stumbled onto a "Free Gaza!!!" protest and you can just tell by the tenor of the crowd that this is not serious for them. They were so over-joyed to be waving their signs and jumping up and down and chanting. They were positively having a blast. These are not truly angry people ready to risk everything on a revolution, and you can bet that 95% of them will disappear the moment things start getting real.
That's a fair counterpoint, but I think we're at a point now where it's dangerous to simply dismiss campus radicalism as a lark done to fit in with peers. There's not only a very obvious dogmatic ideological status quo in academia now, but these kids are going to end up in management positions in both government and corporations in about 10-15 years, but also teaching children this crap as soon as they graduate.
The idea that "oh they'll outgrow this when they're in the real world" hasn't really been the case since the late 90s or so, and it's not something that can be hand-waved away anymore because they have top cover from the establishment now.
I think we’re at a point now where it’s dangerous to simply dismiss campus radicalism as a lark done to fit in with peers.
Agreed. These kids are goading each other on and at times real violence does happen. But this just further helps drive people away from them, as for most people violence is the line where they turn back.
Looking around for the last several years lots of major institutions have embraced this shit in a defensive posture, but it seems to me that things on the wokeness front have already come to a head. I tend to agree with John McWhorter that we've reached an inflection point and the pendulum is starting to swing back. You can't say questioning Affirmative Action is beyond the pale and makes people feel unsafe while saying nothing about the guy dressed up as a Hamas terrorist waiving a "From the River to the Sea" flag.
The contradictions within wokeness are getting harder and harder for people to ignore. At the demonstration I saw there were nearly as many people standing on the periphery shaking their damned heads and saying "what the fuck is it with these people?" I also talk to a lot of professors who are really sick of the constant stream of woke BS coming from the administration. One of my professor friends refers to it as "Wokenomics" and has dozens of examples of how it defeats the actual stated goals of this movement at nearly every turn.
At the same time we're seeing Disney and Pixar openly backing off the wokeness and admitting they took things too far and need to get back to basics.
To me it feels like a 1980s-style backlash against the activism is coming, and coming hard, in tandem with the last several years feeling like a hot-tub-time-travel back to the '70s. The wokesters in the institution are discovering that they've way overestimated how much the silence of the general public indicates support.
I tend to agree with John McWhorter that we’ve reached an inflection point and the pendulum is starting to swing back.
That could very well be possible, although I’m skeptical it will happen to the degree he thinks it will. The swing away from that in the 70s and 80s was already foreshadowed when Nixon absolutely trounced McGovern, and a lot of that energy dissipated after the draft ended and Nixon was forced out. The New Left wasn’t equipped to deal with the geopolitical and domestic economic forces during the mid-late 70s, and even with occasional flare-ups like the “no nukes” silliness and the later sperging over the religious right, the reality is that the culture had reached something of an equilibrium during that time, mostly due to Reagan’s sheer charisma.
There's pushback against this shit, but not at the institutional level yet, and that's where it will have to happen to really settle in.
There’s pushback against this shit, but not at the institutional level yet, and that’s where it will have to happen to really settle in.
Yes, and the good and bad thing about pendulums is that they swing both ways, and we have way more than just one pendulum swinging. Hopefully the institutions catch on before it starts swinging back again.
I think we hit a sort of phase-cancel in the '90s where the anti-activist swing in the '80s swung so hard that even with rising student leftism in the early '90s Clinton still had to pivot towards the right pretty hard on economics and the Republicans still had a lot of success in and after '94.
Even in academia by the early '90s you had Derrida and Foucault openly attacking Marxism, although they were literally getting booed and hissed at - I saw Derrida speak around '98 and the academics in the crowd mostly showed up just to hate-listen and stopped short of throwing actual rotten tomatoes at him. There was a fair amount of no-shit hissing and loud, outraged scoffing; and the dude was talking about Augustine's Confessions, not even anything particularly controversial.
The resurgence of the Christian right and "Americanism" in '00s engendered a major backlash on the atheist, multi-culturalist left (who thought they'd won a permanent victory), and I think we're reaping the last of that right now, with the '10s being almost like the '70s on steroids.
It won't take very long to forget, however, and whatever the coming anti-woke backlash looks like is going to drive a reaction against that, although I'm optimistic that this cultural moment has gotten so stupid that some of these things really will wind up in the dustbin of history, and that the next counter swing will be more akin to the '90s than to the '70s or the '10s.
I was just talking about this with a coworker. When I was working at the university, we had a work conference in which they put up a map from the diversity office to show land acknowledgement of native peoples. It was the fucking map from the Ft Laramie treaty of 1851, one which was imposed, artificial borders, on Native tribes by the US government and for which most of the tribes refused to recognize (especially the Crow and Eastern Shoshone, because it awarded a large portion of the Powder River Basin to the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne and that land was traditionally (right up until the 1860s) Crow and Eastern Shoshone hunting grounds. The fact that a diversity officer put up this map without realizing that their act of 'decolonization' was actually the product of literal, textbook, colonization is filed under can't make this shit up.
The fact that a diversity officer put up this map without realizing that their act of ‘decolonization’ was actually the product of literal, textbook, colonization is filed under can’t make this shit up.
Yeah – that’s right up there with being a “decolonizer” telling Spanish-speakers that their language needs to be revised to fit bourgeois white gender ideology.
Folks around here do a lot of land acknowledgments, and I pointed out to my daughter that these people would be far less likely to do this if they thought there was any chance at all that sovereignty was going to actually be restored to native tribes. I was heartened that she immediately recognized the truth of this, but she hasn’t gone to college yet.
What I think they were trying to do, because they did reference pre Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition (which wasn’t the first whites in this area either, as French and British fur traders were trading on the Upper Missouri in the 18th century) was they looked at a map of tribes which Lewis and Clark encountered and they saw no Northern. Cheyenne or Sioux in Montana in 1803-06 when Lewis and Clark came through this area (they didn’t encounter Lakota west of what is now the Eastern Dakotas and didn’t encounter any Cheyenne (who were still south of the Platte River). So they looked for the oldest maps with Lakota and Cheyenne on them. Because ‘everyone knows’ this is native Sioux territory (unless you ask the Shoshone, Assiniboine, Mandan and Eastern Shoshone).
So they looked for the oldest maps with Lakota and Cheyenne on them. Because ‘everyone knows’ this is native Sioux territory (unless you ask the Shoshone, Assiniboine, Mandan and Eastern Shoshone).
Oh I'm sure they thought of themselves as having good intentions and doing the best scholarship they could, not understanding that these were very far from being fixed, geographical "nations" like existed in Europe. I have absolutely no doubt that if you went to each tribe and asked them to mark out their natural territory on a map that you would wind up with a lot of awkward overlap. Almost like not all the tribes got along perfectly well before the Europeans showed up.
For that matter, prior to about the 15th century, borders even in Europe weren’t necessarily neat, fixed boundaries. Oh this river or that river might be considered the border (which always fucks things up when it floods and the river changes it course). But even then, that lord over on the other side swears fidelity to me and this lord here on my side of the river swears fidelity to both me and the king north of the river. And, because my I married the king of France’s ex-wife, who was Duchess of Aquitaine, and my great great grandfather was the Duke of Normandy, I consider both my territory but the King of France believes that I owe him fidelity. And so I’m going to start a generational war to reclaim my ancestral land, which my feckless grandfather lost. Eventually this will lead to my grandson’s grandson overthrowing his cousin, and then his son winning a great victory over the French. Which will then be lost by his children until another branch of my great (several generations) grandchildren starts a civil war against the other branch of the family, resulting in the downfall of my dynasty and some usurp Welshman (my sworn enemies) assuming the throne. But this will only last three generations (because the spinster queen can’t spread her legs and have an heir), and thus the crown will go to the Scots (my other sworn enemies). Which will result in another civil war, the complete destruction of the Monarchy by Parliament (gee thanks Grandpa John for helping create that body of governance with your ineptitude). Then will invite the same family we deposed a generation ago back onto the thrown, which will work out as well as you think it will, then we’ll have to invite some Dutchman in to overthrow that king, they don’t have any kids and somehow we end up with a German on the thrown (who will eventually change their family name so they can claim not to be German once it is no longer acceptable to claim being German). And through all this we will create (often by accident) an empire that the sun never sets on, only to have it completely destroyed in a generation.
And that's where Israel enters the stage.
I kind of went off on a tangent in that last post, but it reminded me of 'Do you have a flag?'
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uEx5G-GOS1k
That's a classic - that one.
"England - what have you got there behind your back?"
"Um . . . India and several other countries?"
"Put them back! Put them back!"
*incoherent muttering*
Of course, now he's "Suzy" and he isn't funny anymore.
And, yes, much of England's colonial expansion in India and Southeast Asia was a lot by accident.
'okay, East India company we want you to set up some trading posts in India to break the Dutch Monopoly on the Spice Trade (which of course they took over from the Portuguese).
'Oh shit the Dutch don't like that, and now we end up fighting three indecisive wars'.
'Oh shit, the Dutch went bankrupt (and since they were the bankers for most of western Europe shits totally unsettled).'
'You know that King Louis the XIV, we really don't like him, and now he's trying to horn in on India and we don't like the way he is looking at the Netherlands. '
'East India Company, we are going to fight a war with France so you can take over a few French Indian Trading post, but only a few, because we want to bankrupt Louis because there ain't no way we can field an Army in Europe strong enough to beat him (but our Navy is kick ass). '
East India Company in reply 'a war with France? When aren't we at war with France? And that Indian prince is to friendly with the French (wink wink).'
Rinse and repeat for several generations until Waterloo.
Enter King George IV.
'Holy Hell East India Company, what have you been doing?'
East India Company board of trustees 'Nothing sire, glorifying your kingdom.
George IV dies without heirs, William IV takes over, has no legitimate children, so enter Victoria.
'Fuck what's going on India?'
East India Company, trying to look innocent despite rampant fraud and mismanagement 'your highness, let us bestow you with the honor of being named empress of India.'
Of course the royal family could hardly play innocent themselves, since they owned major stock and benefited from EIC activities. But the point is the conquest of India was never really a sanctioned government policy.
Enter King George IV.
‘Holy Hell East India Company, what have you been doing?’
lol
"telling Spanish-speakers that their language needs to be revised to fit bourgeois white gender ideology."
A huge chunk of the Spanish-speaking population speaks Spanish *because* of colonization, with ancestors who wiped out the existing populations of South and Central America in the same way whites did in North America.
But somehow they always get a pass on that, and it's only what happened in the US that gets talked about.
"It's not anti-Semitism if it's only left-wing Jews I condemn".
That strawman has about as much credence as the one the Soros shills promote.

...47.5 percent saying "that sex is not necessary to the majority of TV show and movie plots."
Gen Z would like to be able to watch a show with their nana.
Or maybe the game of thrones renly/knight of flowers scene was just a bit too much show writer over book hubris telling us what we should want to see and like.
Gen Z needs to grow past puberty.
Half live with their parents. Nudity is awkward.
And act like adults? Nuh-uh.
As the parent of 3 members of the Gen Z, we are all aware that a good portion are below the age of consent, and this really does kinda get into the "Don't Say Gay." issue, right?
That even considering the issue as strictly talking about 16 yr. olds wondering Kevin Smith and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are packing lesbians in to the remake of He-Man is being exceedingly generous to the MAP troons.
Didn't there used to be bumper stickers or T-shirts that said, "Get sex off of television... and back in my bedroom where it belongs!" ?
Back in my day we used to call people who didn’t want unnecessary explicit sexual content injected into every plot on national television “homophobes”.
Personally, I can sympathize with the number of injected references to same-sex, trans, interracial or similar partners that don’t/won’t appear in the show being more cringe-inducing, plot-ejecting, and writer-inserting than if they’d literally just spliced in “The Message“.
Yeah, I wonder how much of it is the need to insert some kind of gay relationship into everything. I mean, I suppose there is enough of a gay market for there to be some gay shows, but does it need to be everything?
Which always gets the response, "You do realize, that gay people exist!"
Which is a retarded response. Viewers, perfectly reasonable *checks notes* secular liberal viewers-- some of whom (about 40% according to the latest data) are gay themselves have strong antenna to detect when it's being crowbarred in. And almost all of it in the modern era is being crowbarred in. As Chris Gore says below, they removed the one check box: fun and replaced it with a thousand others, and the 'gay/trans representation' is one of those checkboxes which is very high on the list.
The worst part to me is very little of it is two attractive lesbians.
Part of it must be the activist "queering the culture". Can't let anyone just be normal.
Back in the day, 'sex on TV' was very different. These days it means just shy of actual pornography inserted into the middle of a show for teens and actual pornography in the middle of shows for twenty-somethings. RE: Just about anything on HBO.
That, and the majority of relationships in modern television involve gay and/or trans issues, which is relevant to a very minor faction of TV viewership.
Back in the day, ‘sex on TV’ was very different.
Maybe that part should've come with a sarc tag.
I freely admit to being among the crowd that watch 1-2 episodes of "Will and Grace", wondered aloud how it was in any way better or different than, if not grossly inferior to, Bosom Buddies, Three's Company, Bewitched, Newhart, Cheers, Who's The Boss?, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Full House, It's Garry Shandling's Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Seinfeld, Friends, etc., etc.... and getting shouted down August Landmesser-style.
The critical drinker on the force ohura spok relationship is awsome
Consider what counts as a sex scene in Hollywood today and it will be more understandable. For an example, see the Baldur's Gate bear sex scene.
the Baldur’s Gate bear sex scene

Exactly what "(surprisingly) absurdly sane “Gen Z sensibility”" is referencing.
The game journalist reaction is gold, though. They go from junior anti-sex league members to horny teenage boys catching sight of a nipslip in the blink of an eye.
They can probably handle this classic TV sex scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hNMwxY4-Vk
"Working with Mr. West, one of the most influential artists in the world—a 'master of spectacle,' as one former executive put it—meant being tied to a provocative, polarizing and sometimes unstable personality."
No, autotuned personalities are what sells shoes. That or a correct social credit score.
I am wondering when Adidas stopped working with athletes, who tend to be far more unstable and polarizing.

The complete costs of "fueling" an electric vehicle for 10 years are $17.33 per equivalent gallon of gasoline, a new analysis from the Texas Public Policy Foundation says.
The study authors say the $1.21 cost-per-gallon equivalent of charging a car cited by EV advocates excludes the real costs born by taxpayers for subsidies, utility ratepayers for energy investments, and non-electric vehicle owners for mandate-and-environmental-credit-driven higher vehicle costs, which they say total $48,698 per EV. Those costs must be included when comparing fueling costs of EVs and traditional gas-powered vehicles, TPPF maintains.
“The market would be driving towards hybrids if not for this market manipulation from the federal government. We’d be reducing emissions and improving fuel economy at the same time on a much greater scale,” study author Jason Isaac told The Center Square in an interview. He then cited Toyota estimates that the batteries from one EV can power 90 hybrids and reduce emissions 37 times more than that one EV.
“The real cost of a Ford Lightning is closer to $172,00 and no one would buy them at that. I know their sales have tanked. The [electric] Silverado sold 18 electric trucks last quarter,” Isaac said. “Buying a car is more expensive today and people don’t understand why that is. I’m trying to help them understand if they buy a gas or diesel car they’re paying for an electric vehicle for a wealthy EV owner.”
Lies all the way down. People have been pointing these facts out for years. EVs are dirtier, heavier so more damage to roads, rarer metals, harder to fix, and use more energy. Which is obvious when you look at weight and energy conversion efficiency rates.
No. No. No. EVs are just really popular and Tesla makes fundamentally better vehicles more available to the masses, with no downsides, than Ford or GM.
It's those stupid snobs like AOC with their religious devotion to equity that are fake, virtue-signalling, reality denying, destructive-policy implementing, with-the-best-of-intentions totalitarians.
Economics with numbers is racist.
There's a commenter here who tried to claim you could do math without numbers. I think his handle started with the letter "s".
Technically set theory can be done without numbers, but it still utilizes mathematical concepts. Set theory is used to describe language models.
But sarc wasn't saying that.
Shithead? Close enough?

There is a lot of math that you can do without numbers. More or less depending on exactly what you mean by numbers.

That’s like saying California has no political meaning/motive.
When your politics drives people into the the depths of human depravity and despair, while sneering about how awful Republicans are… physician, it’s time to heal thyself.
Gang/drug violence isn't politically motivated. Poor people don't naturally want to kill each other - see Appalachia.
Of course the drug WAR is the major factor and you know that. Different subject entirely.
Gangs do want to kill each other, and they do politically ally with people in the city council, twerp.
From 2012, but still rings true: https://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/January-2012/Gangs-and-Politicians-An-Unholy-Alliance/
A few months before last February’s citywide elections, Hal Baskin’s phone started ringing. And ringing. Most of the callers were candidates for Chicago City Council, seeking the kind of help Baskin was uniquely qualified to provide.
Baskin isn’t a slick campaign strategist. He’s a former gang leader and, for several decades, a community activist who now operates a neighborhood center that aims to keep kids off the streets. Baskin has deep contacts inside the South Side’s complex network of politicians, community organizations, and street gangs. as he recalls, the inquiring candidates wanted to know: “Who do I need to be talking to so I can get the gangs on board?”
At some of the meetings, the politicians arrived with campaign materials and occasionally with aides. The sessions were organized much like corporate-style job fairs. The gang representatives conducted hourlong interviews, one after the other, talking to as many as five candidates in a single evening. Like supplicants, the politicians came into the room alone and sat before the gang representatives, who sat behind a long table. “One candidate said, ‘I feel like I’m in the hot seat,’” recalls Baskin. “And they were.”
The former chieftains, several of them ex-convicts, represented some of the most notorious gangs on the South and West Sides, including the Vice Lords, Gangster Disciples, Black Disciples, Cobras, Black P Stones, and Black Gangsters. Before the election, the gangs agreed to set aside decades-old rivalries and bloody vendettas to operate as a unified political force, which they called Black United Voters of Chicago. “They realized that if they came together, they could get the politicians to come to them,” explains Baskin.
Street gangs have been a part of Chicago politics at least since the days of the notorious First Ward bosses “Bathhouse John” Coughlin and Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna, who a century ago ran their vice-ridden Levee district using gangs of toughs armed with bats and pistols to bully voters and stuff ballot boxes. “Gangs and politics have always gone together in this city,” says John Hagedorn, a gang expert and professor of criminal justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It’s a shadowy alliance, he adds, that is deeply ingrained in Chicago’s political culture: “You take care of them; they’ll take care of us.”
While they typically deny it, many public officials—mostly, but not limited to, aldermen, state legislators, and elected judges—routinely seek political support from influential street gangs. Meetings like the ones Baskin organized, for instance, are hardly an anomaly. Gangs can provide a decisive advantage at election time by performing the kinds of chores patronage armies once did.
In some cases, the partnerships extend beyond the elections in troubling—and possibly criminal—ways, greased by the steady and largely secret flow of money from gang leaders to certain politicians and vice versa. The gangs funnel their largess through opaque businesses, or front companies, and through under-the-table payments. In turn, grateful politicians use their payrolls or campaign funds to hire gang members, pull strings for them to get jobs or contracts, or offer other favors (see “Gangs and Politicians: Prisoner Shuffle”).
That a sitting alderman would help pay for the funeral of a notorious gangster shows how the interests of politicians and gangs can intertwine. For the Ali twins, the connection conferred an above-the-law aura. For their mother, it offered the opportunity to work in the community as part of the alderman’s inner circle. For Shiller, the relationship seems to have brought street cred and political muscle that helped her fend off tough challenges at the ballot box.
For some politicians, gang members can be a source of political strength—all the more so given that the once-formidable City Hall–Cook County patronage system, the lifeblood of the old Machine, is mostly gone. In the heyday of the Machine, recalls Wallace Davis Jr., a former 27th Ward alderman, political chieftains could simply snap their fingers and marshal a large cadre of city workers to go door-to-door with “a pint of wine and a chicken” to turn out the vote.
And though gangs are anything but a monolithic voting bloc, they can, and sometimes do, offer enormous numbers come election time, especially when you count their relatives, friends, and those they muscle at the polls. “An alderman ain’t nothing without the backing of the neighborhood,” says a top-level Gangster Disciple from the South Side. “Without the gangs, it’s hard [for politicians] to exist.”

Fuck Chicago. It has no political meaning/motive.
Even if it’s got no meaning or motive, the argument doesn’t get any less insane even at a literally pig-stupid level of pattern recognition and self-preservation.
Even you’re able to perfectly distill why two Jihadis murdered 3 people a decade ago 2,000 miles away it’s utterly irrelevant to the fact that 6 people were killed 30 mi. less than a week ago and likely the same number will be killed in the next several days, just like they have in the intervening.
And even the reaction is very much revealed intentions. I didn’t say anyone got murdered because of Chicago or because of any politics or policies in Chicago. Draw a smaller arbitrary polygon on the map, give it whatever name you like, more people were killed there for unknown reasons in recent history at a rate orders of magnitude larger than the amorphous irregular n-dimensional polygon they’re creating to get to their (false) “Deaths by Jihadis/Right Wingers/Incels in the US since 9/12/01.”

ACLU: Trump’s gag order in federal case is unconstitutional

It's not that the woke believe all Jews are literally "white." It's that Israel embodies Western values, and the woke code "the West" itself as white. Regardless of skin color, anyone who espouses Western values is viewed as de facto white, and thus an oppressor.
The woke want to destroy the West and everything it stands for. That's the end goal. And they exploit Western values of tolerance and free speech (when it's convenient) to achieve it. They've already hijacked our institutions to this end. Wokeness must be rejected in the strongest possible terms. It's time to march Western values back through our institutions.
It’s totally not racist to think skin color is the most important thing.
Here's your buddy, Nazi Nardz! Evidently, Putin is "Woke" against the West too:
Putin Rips Israel Over 'Illegal Actions Against Palestinians; Hamas'Actions Are Not Unprovoked'

Putin has an interest in calling things "provocation".
How is Nardz a "Nazi"?
Jeff and Shrike, yes, but I'm failing to see how what Nardz has said here is Nazi.
I thought Jeff was Shrike?
"One might be left wondering what the $3.2 billion in taxpayer services was for, if reps still can't pick up the phone, or the $25.3 billion in improving IT systems, if taxpayer data still isn't secured."
And if one wonders aloud too much, one might find out.
After dumping Kanye, did adidis put out a pro hamas statement like others
'Gen Z wants to see fewer sex scenes in TV and movies, says a new study from UCLA. Roughly 44 percent of people polled "felt that 'romance in media is overused.'"'
Translation: these adult children think touching is icky.
OK, so the real story is that well over half the people do NOT want sex reduced.
You can't trust anything out of UC-anywhere.
And they really want more tranny sex shown 'for diversity'.
Translation: these adult children think touching is icky.
Just to be clear, right about half of Gen Z is under the age of 18 so a good portion of this is rather literally minors telling the adults to lay off the sexualization bullshit.
The same thing happened with the Climate Alarmism about a decade ago. Every class had the Climate Doom message injected into it until they started looking at whether pushing the message was having an effect and discovered that (Holy Shit!) when you tell second graders the world will end before they can vote, they tend not to care about your sociopolitical bullshit and even despise you for it.
I suspect it may have at least a little bit to do with how very easy it is to come across any sort of actual porn you may (or may not) want. I've noticed that it seems like the movie genre of the titillating suspense thriller like Basic Instinct or Jade has been waning, too.
Nowadays, if you want porn, just watch porn. You don't need to pretend you're in it for some kind of art product. Once you have that attitude, you're more struck by thoughts like "I'm not sure I see how this ten-minute super-explicit gay sex scene is actually advancing the plot of this cartoon show."
"IRS's policy is to generally respond to correspondence within 30 days of receipt. Responses that take longer than 45 days are considered late, or what IRS calls overage. As of the end of the 2022 filing season, about 55 percent of IRS's correspondence inventory was overage."
It takes longer and more resources to communicate with Donald Trump than it does the rest of America.
> with 47.5 percent saying "that sex is not necessary to the majority of TV show and movie plots.
Gosh, I've been saying that for years! Now I don't mind a bit of porn, a bit of T&A, etc., but the idea that a show need sex to be edgy is just stupid. Once again it's Hollywood's inability to link two brain cells together and form a cogent thought. If a show needs sex to garner interest, then it's an inherently uninteresting show. Period.
And it's not just bad shows, it good shows. The Americans was fantastic. But did we really need to see a nude 69 scene? The recent Perry Mason (also with the same nude butt) did not need sex on the side. The brutal murder was salacious enough. And why the hell was there explicit fingering going on in the background of one season of Game of Thrones? WTF? I fully understand why Clark refused to do any more nude scenes, she was quickly getting typecast as a slut. Good on her.
We don't need it. We can put actors under bedsheets. We can fade to black. We don't need scenes of "OMG are they really doing it? Let me rewind!" to tell a good story.
Again, I'm not an old fart in my attitude here. I'm not a prude. And it seems the kids agree with me.
Gosh, I’ve been saying that for years! Now I don’t mind a bit of porn, a bit of T&A, etc., but the idea that a show need sex to be edgy is just stupid. Once again it’s Hollywood’s inability to link two brain cells together and form a cogent thought. If a show needs sex to garner interest, then it’s an inherently uninteresting show. Period.
This makes sense on paper, but modern television shows and movies are considerably worse than they were 30 years ago, when there was almost always a little sex thrown in to raise the heart rate of the viewer. If removing sex had IMPROVED movies and television, I'd be tempted to agree. But it hasn't. They've removed the sex AND removed the adult, mature writing. And I do believe the two are connected.
Mature, adult writers often-- as a device will throw a little sex in. It's not the SEX that made the shows better, it was a byproduct of having mature, adult writers, writing television and movies.
Never a single sex sceen in an episode of Comabt!. Can't say that would be true if they made it today.
No, a show where there was literally no need for a sex scene to be thrown in would now feature a bipoc lesbian relationship. Without the common fucking decency to at least throw in a pair of titties.
See someone else watched the first season of 'The Lioness' on Paramount.
A lesbian sex scene between a half Arab-hispanic domestic abuse survivor who becomes a totally bad ass Marine special operative working for the CIA and her mark, the daughter of an Islamic terrorist bankroller. Not sure how many more tropes they could have fit into that scene.
30 years ago sex on TV was portrayed much, much differently than it is today.
Now, there are plenty of shows that are basically rated X. The theory seems to be that every show is better with porn included.
The theory seems to be that every show is
bettermore popular with porn included.I think we went through a cycle where HBO and Showtime got extra viewers for their original programming because they could include explicit sex scenes, which network TV had been teasing as close to as they could get away with.
I feel like the high point of this was the first season of Game of Thrones, but I remember being struck by this as far back as Rome. Rome had a great cast, was well-written, was reasonably historically accurate, but pretty much every episode had a soft-porn scene shoehorned into it complete with the sleazy sax music that says "settle in - we're going to watch these people have sex for a while."
Once the novelty wears off, it's like "why do we have to stop and watch people have sex every twenty minutes? Can we just get on with it?"
The writing is way easier than things like "plot" and "dialogue", though.
True. You can get out of several pages of writing with a simple "these two characters have sex."
That's pretty much where I'm at. I couldn't even watch Game of Thrones and I'm usually the first one in the door when it's science fiction or fantasy content. The sexual and sexually violent content just isn't what I'm looking for to wind down at the end of the day.
I don't necessarily mind when it helps drive the plot, but it rarely has anything to do with the plot.
To be fair, I thought it was pretty silly when Polly Walker stopped showing her boobs during her sex scenes in season two. I mean, damn girl, you already established a baseline, don't get all prude now.
Pretty sure she had a baby in between seasons
Mmmm... Polly Walker.
This is a complex and multi-faceted topic, which I’ve been trying to work through over the last few years.
There has always been a conservative (often religious) set who have complained about “gratuitous sex” being shoehorned into entertainment. Those people have always been with us. And I’m not making a criticism of that sector, I’m merely stating the fact of its existence. What’s going on in the culture is something entirely new, and it exists in a kind of duality:
1. Scantily clad women/nudity/sex is objectification and exploitative. The male gaze passing over a woman’s ankles is harassment. Attractive women/models are literally culturally out. Victoria Secret now uses overweight models and pushes “comfortware”. Women are not to be portrayed in any way that presents them as objects. Saying you don’t think Lizzo is attractive is fat-shaming and bigotry.
2. Porn is ubiquitous. Tens of thousands 17 year old girls yearn to get their OnlyFans page when they turn 18. Sex work is work. Get over your hangups. Showing your ass and tits for tips and likes on social media is “influencing”. Video game streaming sites devolved into titty-streamer sites and anyone who complains (not out of prudishness, but a desire for the site to not devolve into another porn site is called a misogynist). And so on, and so on.
Say what you will about Gen-Z, but they’re not a bunch of conservative Christians who have finally had enough of “gratuitous sex” in popular entertainment. Gen-Z, (and I have Gen-Z kids and all my friends have Gen Z kids) live and operate in both of the above worlds, at the same time. And one crystalline example of what I’m talking about was a controversy where a popular twitch streamer who literally did nude body painting for tips got a bunch of stage dancers at a tech show fired because it was “exploitation”.
The discussion you guys are having is perfectly valid, but has been a discussion as long as I’ve been alive. What I’m alluding to a kind of generational schism that has nothing to do with prudishness or discomfort with sex wafting across their eyeballs, but a highly selective view of sex that often contradicts itself in real time.
The belief seems to be that if you're not monetizing it, it's exploitative. It's the same sort of mentality that led to "slut walks" in the 2000s and bra-burning in the 1970s.
Actually, Victoria secret just announced that they lost to much money and are stopping woke and going back to sexy as their brand:

I think what you're seeing is a blend of the good-old-fashioned "popular culture is trashy and corrupting the youth" stuff with a cultural moment in which feminism has both careened off the tracks and become an unexamined "Good Thing" that "Good People" "advocate for."
When I was in grad school in the late '90s, early '00s, feminism was in a state of bona fide crisis, as you had the whole run of views that you mention, but this wasn't some unified front - it was different schools of feminism in conflict with one another.
However, at the same time, the Democrats, bereft of sensible policies and thus presenting themselves as "The Civil Rights People," needed "Feminism" to crusade on behalf of.
Now I think it's summed up perfectly the way my Gen Z daughter puts it - "Feminism" doesn't really have any meaning other than "Good Thing that Good People support."
In other words, we've moved from conflicting theories of feminism to an environment in which the political/media/educational establishment just rams anything with a search tag "Feminism" right down your throat without one iota of thought about whether these various things are self-consistent, apropos of your point - i.e. you'd better not male-gaze a female, you thought-rapist, but you'd better not not male-gaze Lizzo, you fat shamer!
And all of this is being combined with the fact that Gen-Z is still too young to really care whether or not they're contradicting themselves.
Jeepers.
It's the game of thrones plot:
Boring Exposition
Sex
Boring exposition that undoes previous exposition
Violence
Boring exposition that undoes previous exposition
Roll credits
And preferably the boring exposition happens while people are having sex.
Deadwood was great at this, though it was just Ian McShane crushing monologs while getting blown.
That was a great scene. Haven't seen him pull off something like before or since.
HBO was absolutely killing it in the early-mid 2000s. Legitimately some of the greatest TV shows in the last 40 or 50 years. It's really a shame that "Rome" in particular was so expensive to make, because they could have gotten probably 4 or 5 seasons of great TV out of that series, maybe ending with the assassination of Caligula or Nero.

Boring Exposition
But enough about Christopher Nolan films.
We don’t need it. We can put actors under bedsheets. We can fade to black. We don’t need scenes of “OMG are they really doing it? Let me rewind!” to tell a good story.
I can’t count the number of movies/actors/scenes that I watched as a kid 30ish yrs. ago and thought nothing of, but watch now and realize “Oh, that’s what that was!”
Two characters shyly avoiding eye contact. One announcing where they themselves are going. The other announcing someplace else that they're going. Both coming back on scene together later, inordinately longer than it should’ve taken to do what they announced… the writers, directors, actors all weaving together the subtle narrative, the pacing… brilliant.
Same here, a bit of some R-rated steaminess when the movie seems to call for it ("9 1/2 Weeks", "50 Shades of Gray"...) is perfectly fine by me. Want porn? Watch porn, I like some porn now and again.
But nonsensical and gratuitous insertion (pun intended) of extended sex scenes when the movie doesn't seem to warrant it does kind of creep me out too.
One example that has always stuck in my head..."Watchmen"...a favorite of mine, going back to the original graphic novel. But right in the middle of it is a sex scene that runs far too long, uncomfortably long, in a super-hero movie. It could have been a much shorter scene with the sex implied by the hand slapping the button that causes the ship to fire flamethrowers; could have even started out with a brief bit of the nudity, then cut to the hand on the button and the flamethrower. But it just kept going...the plot needed the characters to have had sex, but this overly long and graphic scene just jars the whole movie off kilter for awhile (and this is a movie where one character's giant blue schlong is swinging around in most every scene he's in).
‘Gen Z wants to see fewer sex scenes in TV and movies, says a new study from UCLA. Roughly 44 percent of people polled “felt that ‘romance in media is overused.'”
Um, I've been alluding to this in the comments for years now.
Case in point, the sequel to Quantum Leap.
with 47.5 percent saying "that sex is not necessary to the majority of TV show and movie plots.
To pump this subject for a little more commentary, again, this might look good on paper, but there are many facets to this-- all of which touches on the strange conundrum about how "sex" is perceived in society.
We're living in an era with this very weird tension between sex "It's no big deal, it's just sex... sex work is work... it's all uncontroversial" and the "Sex is so dangerous, any hint of it in the workplace is problematic/NPR: Telling a woman in the work place she looks 'great' or 'nice' is sexual harassment/keep your male gaze off my ankles/#MeToo on steroids" era.
Reason has had several interviews with guests who live in this sphere: Keep your hands and eyeballs off women and hey! Subscribe to my OnlyFans!
In fact, I was thinking about this very subject just last night. I increasingly find myself watching television shows or movies that were made or produce before The Entertainment Cultural Revolution.
I wasn't even consciously doing it, I just suddenly noticed I'd watch ten minutes of a modern show... or just look at the poster or trailer for it, shake my head and say, "no, this is terrible".
To give a specific example, I recently started re-watching Counterpart which is, by my estimation, one of the best television shows ever produced. And almost no one has heard of it. (another subject).
It's essentially a John Le Carre story with a sci-fi backdrop... which always raises a few eyebrows when I explain to people what it is, but once explained, people almost universally say, "Oh, that does sound good."
I'm n ot going to give a plot summary which will extend this comment out to 3000 words, so, in sticking to the subject of the post, there are, just off the top of my head, three sex scenes in the show with female nudity. In each case, the scene is useful for character development, but not entirely necessary. They could have removed the nudity and still used other mechanisms to establish that sex had occurred. Again, Gen Z would argue that the nudity was exploitive or problematic, but yet it was a byproduct of a grown-up writing a grown-up show-- which is seriously lacking.
Chris Gore discusses why modern films are so bad.
The essence: They removed the single most important tickbox of filmmaking "fun" and put in a thousand other checkboxes (see my linked article, Hollywood's New Rules" above).
When you uncheck the 'fun' box, the sex is going to be the first thing to go. All Gen Z cares about is that a Strong, girlbjoss BIPOC lesbian with a sideshave is the protagonist.
Chris Gore on why modern movies are complete shit, part 2.
He digs into “gender swapping” and “representation”.
I think modern movies are generally too long too. Oppenheimer was fucking 3 hours long.
Strong, girlbjoss BIPOC lesbian with a sideshave is the protagonist.
And some chick that used to have a penis is her sidekick.
I am guessing that does not mean the penis in question was inside her vagina.
Possibly some "chick" that still has her penis.
Looking at numbers...they SAY they want that, but they clearly do not watch that nonsense and they definitely do not PAY to watch that nonsense.
BTW, I feel like this needs to be addressed. That's the living in both worlds that contradict each other in real time.
1. Your movies need to be more inclusive. Make sure every piece of entertainment has a trans character, a strong woman bipoc, a lesbian, an example of body positivity, include themes that take on current day topics like global warming. ESG the fuck out of the plot. Gender swap all formerly male roles.
2. "You goonna see the latest ___________ movie this weekend?"
"Hell no, those movies are trash."
They clearly don't. Look at how much the girl boss movies are bombing
Indiana Jones, star wars, snow white, little mermaid etc
When you uncheck the ‘fun’ box, the sex is going to be the first thing to go. All Gen Z cares about is that a Strong, girlbjoss BIPOC lesbian with a sideshave is the protagonist.
As I point out above, there's some slurring of Millennials and Gen Z going on here.
There are some Millennials and Gen Zers who legit fit the bill you describe. There are, however, some legit Gen Zers who closer fit the "Uncle Diane-Paul was watching a TV show where you could see the girls' boobies." bill.
There are some Millennials and Gen Zers who legit fit the bill you describe. There are, however, some legit Gen Zers who closer fit the “Uncle Diane-Paul was watching a TV show where you could see the girls’ boobies.” bill.
Why do you think my kids leave the room when I say, "Oh man, I love this movie!"
It is worth pointing out, once again, that part of the IRS's problem is that the Congress has created and overly complex tax code. Simplifying the code would certainly help to reduce the burden.
I would also suggest that as the IRS calculates most people taxes as a check, that they simple calculate the taxes, send people a bill/refund. People should be free to challenge the bill, but my guess is that challenges would amount to less overall work than helping people correct errors. I say this because as well all know math error are the greatest mistakes and I would expect this to be reduced.
Simplifying the code.. like doubling the personal exemption so most taxpayers don't have to itemize? Wish a president had thought of that.
It will go right by him/her.
It was a good idea and we have Paul Ryan to thank for it. Speaker Ryan set a goal for simple the tax code but in the end did little beyond what you mentioned. There is still plenty of code to be simplified. I would suggest a good place to start is the treatment of social security payments which I consider far too complicated. It is also silly that the government pay SS funds to people and then take some of the money back as taxes. Would it not make more sense to pay less and take back none?
When did Paul Ryan get it passed?
The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed on December 20, 2017.
We should go back to the income tax code during the Taft administration. The irs had 0 problems then
The complexity of the tax code is intentional, and lobbied for. The more complex it is, the easier it is to find loopholes.
And it keeps the tax prep business going. The IRS has all the info they need to send you a bill. But there are an awful lot of accountants and tax prep companies that would go out of business if that happened.
Plus, they get more money if you guess wrong.
And these companies don't just get money for doing your taxes, they often advance tax refund for a fee, allowing them to make money off some of the most vulnerable people.
Yeah, it's a racket. On top of another racket where way too many people have been convinced to be happy that they give the government an interest free loan every year.
I have to agree with you. The wise person knows that it is better to have underpaid the tax and then to have to pay in. But human nature thinks it is better to get a refund.
I would say that there are many reasons for the complexity of the tax code. One significant reason is that it is easier to give away money in the tax code that to give it directly. During the pandemic the tax code credits were a way to give money away to people to help the economy. There is simply too much of this. If you feel you need to help people give them the money don't put in a tax credit.
Step 1. Define "income".
Bet it takes thousands of words, if not thousands of pages.
"All personal income, including wages, salaries, dividends, capital gains, rents and interest" sounds simple enough.
If grandma gives Johnny $100 for his birthday, does she have to provide a 1099 with it? It's income to Johnny... If Uncle Joe gives Susie $20,000 for college, is that income for her? Are life insurance proceeds income to the beneficiary? How about gambling winnings (vs gambling losses?)? Are those capital gains net CG or gross CG (how are losses counted)? How about if a bank allows a short sale on writes off the loan difference? Are federally forgiven student loans income? If my house burns down and the insurance company cuts me a check to build a new one, is that income? I sold a used car (at a substantial loss from what I original paid for it). I sold my house and made some money on it (but really took a loss when interest, etc. are figured in; do I have to /get to figure that in?)...
This can keep going and going and going. That's just for "income"...
Failure to detail "income" completely will cause some wise guy to circumvent taxes for awhile. "Those were not wages, that money was a gift." Then gifts become taxable, but not Garndma's gift to Johnny does need a 1099...now we need limits (single gift, vs annual total, one person versus multiple...).
Gifts to family are not taxable until they exceed $15K in a single year. So, Johnny does not need to report the gift as income.
Income can be defined simply as the amount of money you take in a year as wages, winnings, investments, and retirement benefits. Twenty words in all. Where the tax code gets complicated is in the definition of wages, winnings, investments, and retirement benefits. I do think there is room here for simplification.
So if I go to work for my uncle, he can gift me $15,000 instead of paying me a salary (covering) for some of my labor? Can my aunt, part-owner off the family business, also gift me $15,000, so the first $30K of my "salary" is tax free? And they can avoid any payroll taxes on that $30K, too?
Or they can loan me the full amount of my salary for the year, then forgive the loan, since apparently forgiven loans are not income?
The income tax is a total travesty and should be eliminated entirely.
That and property tax

Gazanukkah continues space!
So, they want fewer movies like Top Gun, and more like Top Gun: Maverick?
I believe the answer to that is "yes".
Seems that way. Gen Z forgets, or wants to ignore, that romance and sex are part of adulting.
No, they KNOW it's part of adulting which is why they want nothing to do with it.
A lot of incels in gen Z...don't want to be reminded of their failure to launch?
I know somebody who submitted an amended return last spring and a couple weeks later told me they must have processed it by now. I was dubious. Six months later the IRS sent a letter saying the return had been rejected for lack of a signature.
2 years ago I paid what I owed, got a payment letter from the IRS, paid it as it isnt worth my time fighting, 3 weeks later got double in refund what my payment letter was for.
IRS is full of incompetence.

Also, to keep the conversation about bad movies going... Pixar has apparently admitted that Woke is killing them, without admitting Woke is killing them. I believe the message was "We've drifted "too far" from our Story-telling roots".
Which is interesting on a couple of levels. 1. You admitted you weren't telling stories but pushing narratives. 2. Drifted 'too far' which suggests that there's a drift away from story-telling which is prudent and necessary, you just have to find the right balance between narrative and story-telling.
holy fuck! did you head the Gaza Health Ministry has the dead-rolls at like 7000?? names and everything! and here I am merely worried about a handful of hopefully alive American hostages
Rule #1: Hamas is like Turd. Hamas lies. Hamas lies when they know they lie. Hamas lies when we know they lie. Hamas lies when they know we know they lie. Hamas lies and is probably full of pederasts too.
I’m still shocked that this is the highest number Hamas can pull out of its ass after nearly three weeks of constant Israeli Warcrime bombing.
Any more, and Hamas risks using the actors too many times. People might start asking questions when the same guy has more lives than a cat.
7,000? That wasn't even like 2 days of the Pandemic in this country. Harden the fuck up Gaza.
Gaza could replace those numbers with like, a single day's worth of illegal immigrants, if only they'd accept those peace loving entrepreneurs from our southern border. Think of what they'd accomplish for the Gazan economy!

Not because they are uncomfortable with depictions sex, mind you. Rather because they are uncomfortable with depictions of *consent* and the concept that some people can have preferences that do not include them.
Years of playing Bioware and Larian 'rpg's' and their in-game sex dolls makes them uncomfortable with anyone not 'player-sexual'.
We're all NPC's to them.

Seriously?
What would you call the new agency that has to collect the sales taxes? Would you move current IRS staff into the new agency or hire new from the start? Would you tax all products or are some exempt? Many sales today are for services, are those taxed too or are services exempt? I could go on but let us just start here.
This is so weird. I'm a GenXer and I find my fellow cohort members on both the right and left are, on average, more libertarian and less prudish than the boomers before us, and now the zoomers coming up behind us. Since when did the younger generation become the ones who are stodgily anti-sex, drugs, and rock and roll? What a bunch of whippersnapper traditionalists!

And yet, at the end of the Civil War, General Lee was A) not charged with treason, and B) nearly universally admired, as a general and as a person. This admiration continued for decades, even past the living memory of those who knew him or knew of him.
It has only been in the past couple of decades, more than a century removed form the conflict, that a new generation of Americans decided he was problematic and statues memorializing him should be removed and destroyed.
Not to mention he was fairly crucial as a staff officer and scout for Winfield Scott during the Mexican American War, designed several important port fortresses for the US Army, oh and Lincoln offered him command of the Army of the Potomac first.
He did for a long time after WW2, and there is still a placque for him on Broadway in NYC. And as late as 2018, Paris considered naming a street in his honor.
You're out of your depth here, you dumb bitch. People here read real, actual books.
Expand slavery? Slavery was not going to expand much beyond east Texas, it simply wasn't a viable economic model outside the plantation system.
Your time is almost up, lynn.
LOL, the hilarious part of your tard-raging is that you actually believe your side won’t be looked on in 150 years with the same level of contempt you do for those you deem “problematic.”
lets hope it doesnt take 150 years!
i was hoping maybe 2024 plus maybe 6 months
What “side” are you talking about?
I love how shitlibs suddenly start playing dumb when their tard-raging is called out.
In 150 years folks will find it absurd we ever let people glorify treason in the first place.
In 150 years, the global world order will be long dead, as will the left-liberal consensus.
The insults are entirely deserved. No explanation is needed.
Oh I get it: most the people in this comment section are nut jobs!
Woof, the projection in this comment can be seen from Pluto.
Have a nice day. Please seek help!
Shush, fembarker.
Economically, it made no sense, but they still wanted to keep spreading slavery westward. Very badly.
Many southerners were willing to kill to spread slavery to Kansas in the 1850's. They violated their own free speech rights to ban speaking against slavery in much of the south. They walked out of the Democratic Party in 1860 because Stephen Douglas, the Presidential nominee, refused to force new states to allow slavery based on their latitude - and by splitting the Democrats, they got Lincoln elected.
Yeah, try "Battle Cry of Freedom" to start with. If you want to learn about how slavery was perpetuated in the southwest before and after the Civil War, you can check out "Borderlands of Slavery."
Now shut your stupid hole and go do your homework.
