Brickbat: Fining Free Speech, Eh
All online services that offer audio and video with at least $10 million ($7.35 million U.S.) in revenue in Canada must register with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission by November 28. The requirement applies to streaming services, social media, adult websites, online news, and podcasters. Those services could also become subject to rules mandating a certain amount of Canadian content. Only video games and audio books are exempt from the requirement to register.

What happens if you just don’t register?
Then the True North, strong and free, comes down on you with all its might.
You’ll be made to eat poutine covered in maple syrup .
I think there would be a punishment, not a prize.
Pirates of the Northwest Territories.
They get a visit from Dudley Do-Right…with extreme prejudice.
If you continue broadcasting, the penalty for an individual is $25k per day and the corporate penalty is $250k per day.
If you violate a regulation or order, it’s $25k for an individual’s first offense and $50k for each subsequent offense and $250k for a corporation’s first offense and $500k for each subsequent offense.
Presumably, if the order is “stop broadcasting” and you continue anyway (perhaps in the misguided belief that Canada allows free speech), they will apply both charges in an attempt to bankrupt you faster.
I don’t see how that would be applicable to any broadcaster in the US.
They can just pound oil filled sand.
There are fewer and fewer Canadians politely volunteering to climb into the barrel, we will see if there are enough of them to get rid of Juthtin and all of his fangirls. Of course, we face the same problem here with the Obamists and their ‘fundamental change’ to the US.
Ya, ‘obamist’ is something we need to worry about…
Or maybe we could look after some actual problems.
The Biden Administration staffers are mostly Obama Era retreads, just saying.
Dude, Obama as the ku-klux-exorcist’s reincarnation of Black Satan is all the hobgoblin girl-bullying Trumpanzees have left to appeal to.
In an unrelated story, social media companies leave Canada.
So another prohibition law against production and trade is now being retasked to bust communist anarchists who want to ban energy and whack-job mystics eager to reenslave women for Hitler and Jesus. With any luck, all three entities–the bad law, the Dems and God’s Own Prohibitionists will cancel each other.
On April 28, 1944, Ku-Klux Klan national officials gathered in secret and voted to disband the Invisible Empire. This was because the IRS billed them 685,000 1944 dollars back taxes on their profits during the Harding-Coolidge-Hoover 1920s. Like U.S. looters, big govt Canucks miss the days when a couple of corporations censored all news at the whim of the Political State. Since they lack a Klan, small media is a tempting target.

Right, but, being libertarians, we recognize the difference between “It exists in the corners of the internet where I’m not going to look.” and “It exists on all platforms in order to comply with Canadian Law.”
