Yes, the Government Is Coming for Your Gas Stove
State and local governments are moving forward with bans on gas stoves in new residences.

In May, the Democrat-controlled New York State Legislature and Gov. Kathy Hochul inked a $229 billion state budget agreement that included a ban on residential gas stoves. By 2029, only electric ranges will be allowed in new residences.
The policy is similar to bans imposed by local governments in places such as New York City and California. Advocates say those laws help curtail climate change by reducing natural gas consumption and protect people's health by reducing in-home emissions.
Opponents who cited studies finding no causal link between gas stoves and asthma won few converts in Albany, nor did they sway legislators with their argument that burning gas in power plants to power electric stoves is less efficient and therefore probably worse for the climate.
Defenders of consumer choice are fighting a two-front war. One week after New York approved its gas stove ban, the Biden administration proposed new energy efficiency rules for dishwashers that would require new machines to use less water and electricity. Such rules already target showerheads, microwave ovens, conventional ovens, refrigerators, and laundry machines.
The administration argues that the new rules will eventually save consumers billions of dollars on utility bills. Manufacturers say the savings will be eaten up by the higher prices of the machines they will be forced to make.
Higher prices driven by federal mandates historically have been accompanied by worse products. As efficiency standards for dishwashers got tighter under President Barack Obama, manufacturers met them by making machines that circulate less water over a longer wash cycle. Many people responded by hand-washing their dishes, a practice that uses more water.
One should expect unintended consequences when state mandates collide with individual choice. And even if the government could perfectly predict the results of its actions, that would not justify its interference.
People know their own needs best. When purchasing a new oven, dishwasher, or washing machine, they make tradeoffs.
Are you going to use your dishwasher a lot? If not, the cheaper upfront cost of a more energy-hungry model makes sense. Some people prefer the peace of mind that comes with an electric stove. People who care about price and efficiency may prefer gas.
Central planners tend to downplay the effects of their bans and regulations, assuming they acknowledge them at all. The U.S. Department of Energy has a whole FAQ correcting "misinformation" about its appliance rules. But consumers are feeling justified anger at these policies.

Gas stoves are racist and probably homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and misogynistic. Get rid of them and replace them with dung fires as Mother Gaia intended.

Jerryskids is right about the evils of gas stoves (and water heaters for that matter!) Dung fires are adequate for cooking, but are even more highly polluting than gas, and would require that some of those evil cows be kept around to produce cow chips (buffaloes being extinct in most states now).
Listen you peons. Who the hell gave you the notion that you should have hot cooked food (or hot showers) like your betters do. Our motto for you, with both meanings implied, is "Wash it off with cold water, then eat it raw, peon!"
Hey, shit-cooked bread was good enough for Ol' Zeke in Ezekiel 4, so it'll be good enough for all the Old Time Religionists, especially those who already buy Ezekiel 4:9 Brand Bread and eat it without reading the full Chapter. 🙂

Is this the libertarian moment?
Not now; certainly not here.
You’ll know it when it happens. Hint: it will involve lots of mostly peaceful protesting culminating in a notable amount of democrats being deposited in local landfills.
The closest we've gotten to the libertarian moment was back in the mid-90s when the Democrat president was forced to announce -- however disingenuously -- that the era of Big Government was over, and when Forestry Service Supervisor Gloria Flora resigned because she and her minions got "compared to collaborators with the Vichy government in Nazi-controlled France" by the locals in northern Nevada. Since then the Empire has been striking back.
I recently, within the last 10 years, bought a 14Kw whole-house natural gas generator. I lose power a lot because the grid in NJ sucks too. If those motherfuckers come for my generator, it will be a cold, dead hands moment.
These assholes who feel the need to impose their shit on me need to get the fuck out of the way or die. I am okay with either option.
They’re not going to confiscate your generator, they’re going to make it so only the wealthy can afford one in the future. Meanwhile, reducing the number of wealthy people.
From the post, I really, really wonder why you live in NJ.
Is your generator registered? Did you complete a background check and have the mandatory waiting period before taking possession of said generator? 14kW is a high capacity generator and nobody other than government needs that many kilowatts. The founding fathers didn’t have generators such as yours.
They evidently want us to be like the Amish drug dealers who power their cell phones with pedal-powered dynamos.
Nobody needs a high capacity generator.
What are you? Some kind of transphobic rayciss?
They wont take the generator, they will stop the flow of gas. Get a big bottle.
Then they will make it a crime to possess the bottle.
Or worse, make it subject to timely inspection. You can potentially conceal possession of the bottle, but once it is registered...
They won't have to take your generator. They'll just make it illegal to sell you natural gas.
I have a 22kW Generac. Fucking awesome. Also in NJ.
The best part is now I get excited when the power goes out, counting down the 10 second until is starts up.
Now you’re getting it. Democrats won’t ever stop unless they’re stopped. You can’t stop a bunch of rabid sociopaths without leverage.
There was substantial leftist gaslighting about gaslit appliances not being a target.
They lit a pilot light at first with their idea, then put it out, then turned the valve wide-ass open and lit a match in the middle of the room.

"One should expect unintended consequences when state mandates collide with individual choice."
The consequences are hardly UN-intended.
Elect fascists, get fascism.
Yeah, we saw that from 2016-2020. Good call.
Read the Durham report for more details.
Yeah, RaspberryJeffy, they worked against the President during those years as the #Resistance assholes.
Serious question, what do you consider from Trump's presidency to be fascist?
Must be the huge drop in regulations.
Or maybe the improvement in the economy. (Especially for "minorities")
Perhaps the income tax rate cuts?
Energy independence, maybe.
Can you give some examples? Is it the over zealous lockdowns from blue state mayors? What did he band?
You really need to look up facism since you don't understand the meaning.
Mean tweets triggered her little ego.
Thought this issue had been put on the back burner.
If people knew their own needs best we'd still have leaded gas, polluted drinking water, and drunk driving would still be legal.
What an asinine article.
When we let asshats like you decide what is best we get the trail of tears, slavery, wars, eugenics, and genocide. So yeah, letting people choose what is best for them is clearly the lesser of two evils. Also, individuals where not running around crying 'muh leaded gas' you moron. Technology improved and in that case, the replacement, MTBE, was just as bad and polluted drinking water.
You get a lot of things when people have independence but if you yourself are not an asshat then you know what to buy into and what to reject. If you learn everything you know from your government then you know nothing. Government wants to disarm you so you will be easier to teach- readin', ritin' and Ruger makes it too hard for them. Why do police carry guns when they hardly ever use them? Because you are not worth it...
Ok , Tony.
It's Jeffy. He exposed himself in a thread last week by using a "raspberry" comment under his own name.
https://reason.com/2023/06/26/anticlimactic-end-to-wagner-groups-armed-rebellion-in-russia/?comments=true#comment-10126543
jeffy claimed it was, "Someone who hates me and has far too much time to spend here at Reason trolling and shitposting all the time", which would not even be a lie if he is being honest with himself.
I saw where that it occurred again and he claimed that because it didn't get muted if you muted jeffy's handle, it wasn't him. Ironically, his white Mike pointed out that the "spoof" contained no additional Unicode text. Which would seem to mean that it couldn't be anyone but jeffy for the same reason SPB had to became SPB2 when his account got deleted; the requirement for unique Unicode text in every handle.
But, if you change your handle, that handle can be used on a different account. Which would seem to indicate that jeffy uses not just multiple accounts, but multiple handles on multiple accounts. Not a shocker, considering how disingenuous he is. His name is Legion.
I don’t call him Lying Jeffy for nothing.
You do realize that the people who “know best” are still people, right? What makes them so special?
Every totalitarian government always has the peons who will gladly deflect and go along with whatever authoritarian dictate the government wants to instill. You serve that role well.
Tony is so much smarter then the rest of us. Hey if we listened to Democrats we would still have slaves. We would be great then.
Government is never wrong! Who makes up government Tony? Wait it's people.
The KKK would be a major political party
Precisely.
However, in the specific issue of gas stoves, banning them will accomplish nothing for climate change as long as the electricity to power them is generated by burning fossil fuels, which is the case in NYC. The concerns about asthma are real but the research is mostly decades old and may be irrelevant for modern gas stove designs. And ventilation -- now required by building codes for other indoor gas and oil appliances like heaters and clothes dryers -- is an option not allowed by the purists.
This is progressive overreach. To show you how stupid this is, wood stoves -- orders of magnitude worse than gas stoves -- are still legal in most of NY. (NYC did finally ban them a few years ago.)
Asthma became very popular with young children of divorced mothers in the 1980s. Don't know why. And then peanuts became deadly. Still don't why.
x
What an asinine commenter!
Lead in gas, paint, and pipes is a threat to individuals physical and mental health and keeps people from living peaceful, sovereign, independent lives. Ditto with Murcury-polluted water. And drunk driving threatens Life, Liberty, and Property on the road.
A free society would have both civil and criminal remedies for polution, poison, and dangerous driving. Natural gas is in no way comparable to these pollutions, poisons, and crimes.
In fact, the Roman Government used Lead pipes for it's water supply, which probably explained Nero, Caligula, Elagabalus, and other looney Roman Caesars and may explain Kolonel Klink Klaus.
Your copper water pipes are sweated with lead solder. Plus stop drinking leaded gas, eating paint chips, but you are independent and can choose for yourself.
Drunk driving is an industry for government revenue. Excessive speed is number 1 cause of traffic fatalities. Following too close is number 2 and number 3 is driving too fast for conditions. None of you would mind a fine equal to DUI being applied to speeding convictions would you?
Romans built stone aqua ducts for transporting water and I bet most of that water turned to wine. How did they mine lead anyway? They did not have dynamite, rock drills or haul trucks. How about smelters? And how does mercury get into water? Where does it come from? Discarded thermometers?
You know where lead acid batteries go? Same place computers go- little islands that the people melt solder off circuit boards over open flames and batteries are drained of the liquid (electrolyte and acids, hydrogen gas just floats away) and it flows down to the ocean like all liquids are want to do! Copper wire insulation is burned off the copper. It is against the laws of United States to do all this that is why they do not brag about it.
When did this stop being a conspiracy theory?
It never was a conspiracy theory since it was always true. However, the claim that is was a conspiracy theory was apparently officially being dropped as of May this year when Hochul signed off on it.
It never was you gaslighting retard.
And yet, it was promoted as such by the left.
The first news of it was the announcement of the policy. Conspiracies are hidden. Stop encouraging the gaslighting trolls.
I think we need to add gaslight to list of words you do not understand.
One doesn’t need a gas cooking appliance to make a Cuban sandwich.
Just a bonus hole.
Sarc is a weak little bonus hole.
When then town drunk is also the village idiot, that is the result.
If he were literally Oscar the Grouch it would be a step up for him.
I understand gaslighting just fine. It's what you are doing right now - telling me I don't understand something that I understand.
Now why don't you go look up conspiracy like a good little troll. You might be surprised to find it means something secret, not a stated policy.

That's still a whole lot so stupid. If it's a policy then it is not a conspiracy theory.
You are a whole lot of stupid
He’s a whole lot of pussy too.
It was not a policy. Until suddenly it was. During the "it's not the policy" period, arguments against the proposal were in fact falsely derided as conspiracy theories.
It was a policy in some places already, specifically California. That means it was not a secret. The politicians deriding people by calling them conspiracy theorists were altogether full of shit, because what they were calling a conspiracy was in fact already policy. That policy spreading isn’t evidence of some secret plan because policies start in one place and spread all the time. So no, it was not a conspiracy nor a conspiracy theory. It was just another asinine policy that started in California and then spread like mold.
You do understand we are all making fun of the fact that it really wasn't a conspiracy theory, that it was actually happening, and that morons like Chuck Schumer calling a conspiracy theory were the ones who were wrong, right?
Your comments read like you think everyone here actually thought it a conspiracy theory. It seems you're missing the point pretty impressively.
Maybe so. I’m so used to you guys believing such ridiculously retarded shit that I figured this was just another astoundingly stupendous, mind-bogglingly stupid, heartfelt belief.
Translation: You read into the comments what you wanted to read as opposed to what was actually there and then behaved like your normal spasoid self accusing everyone else of behaving the way you always behave.
You really need to grow up.
I admit to possibly misunderstanding what was said so you have to launch into name-calling? You do realize that that’s why people dig in their heels and become contrarians, right? They know that they’re going to be called names either way, so they figure fuck it and fuck you. Then every conversation is a battle instead of an exchange of ideas.
Every time my opinion of you goes up a notch you knock it right back down. Fuck off.
I launched into name calling? Where did I call you names?
Why is it that you go all half cocked in your commenting and then immediately complain about name calling when no such thing has occurred?
You do realize that your own behavior is what promulgates the conversations turning into battles, right? I mean your first comment in this thread stated: “It never was you gaslighting retard.”
How is that not doing exactly what it is you are now decrying?
Why is it that you go all half cocked in your commenting and then immediately complain about name calling when no such thing has occurred?
Alcohol is a hell of a drug. Sarc really needs to step away from the bottle before posting here as either drunk or hungover.
Oof. That one was especially brutal, sarc.
Maybe time to check back into rehab?
I admit to possibly misunderstanding what was said so you have to launch into name-calling?
After accusing multiple posters of gaslighting and defending his own gaslighting, when presented with unassailable evidence he finally posts a qualified admission of being wrong and in the same sentence laments that sane people react with disdain.
I bet he also wonders why his family abandoned him.
This comment doesn't make any sense.
I'm so tired of that part of the leftist playbook:
1. Demand something
2. Deny you ever demanded it and claim such is a conspiracy theory
3. Move forward with implementing it claiming its not the same as
the conspiracy theory
4. Admit it's the same as the conspiracy theory but it's for your own
good so the ends justify the means.
I'm so tired of the rightist playbook:

I don't know why you post that shit, either, and it seems you are very selective in your reading of my posts, TDS-addled shit.
I generally have you on mute because all you seem capable of is screaming "TDS addled pile of shit." I did look below at your comment, and of course it's you stating "advocates are full of shit." Then there's you calling people "pieces of shit" constantly. It's just the same old accusations over and over against people you disagree with. No substance, just always some form of calling people shit.
The truth is that both the nutty far left and the insane far right use similar tactics. A plague in both their houses.
Fuck off, FBI guy.
But but but boaf sydez!
Hochul was proudly announcing the legislative proposal that led to this law the day after the Biden Administration claimed it was ridiculous to suggest that anyone was banning gas appliances.
As this thread makes clear, sarc doesn’t actually know what gaslighting means.
Gaslighting is not just claiming "you don't understand," which is a refutable argument.
Gaslighting is someone claiming that something that is clearly happening right in front of both of you is not really happening and that you are crazy for believing the evidence of your own perceptions. It is irrefutable in that the gaslighter denies reality while presenting the circular argument that you can't be trusted to know what is real.
A perfect sarcasmic-worthy example of the behavior that cloaks the denial of reality in mockery:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2023/01/11/biden-ban-gas-stove-not-happening-health-concerns/11031761002/
Yes, but you aren’t starting at the beginning in that recap of the history of the leftist campaign to ban gas stoves. Go back further to announced policy in California, for example.
Will New Yorkers grill their legislature over this?
Put their feet to the fire?
How? A New York Strip followed by tarring and feathering? I doubt it. New Yorkers are such meat-heads.
The trial balloon didn't go well and yet they went forward anyway. So what was the point of the trial balloon?
To see who objected so they could create a list to hand over to the NKVD.
Confirming the validity of the old joke “How can you tell when a politician is lying? Answer: When his lips are moving”.
But here’s the thing about a joke, it’s supposed to be funny, not tragic.
This is how a black market for gas stoves will arise.
It will be an impossibly steep hill to climb. They aren't really banning gas stoves or furnaces in new construction, they are banning gas hookups. You'll still be able to go to Home Depot and get a gas stove, you just won't have any gas line to connect it to. Once the ban is expanded to encompass existing construction they'll just shut off the gas service entirely. (probably ban propane tanks at the same time)
Hank hill hardest hit?
Just corral all the democrats behind this into the Mega Lo Mart, then blow it up.
Listen here, Twig-Boy......
Well, boy howdy!
One of the biggest reductions in carbon emissions in the past fifty years has been the use of natural gas over goal. And innovations such as fracking have only improved this. So of course the government wants to punish it.
If you want to reduce or eliminate an efficient energy source, the best way is to find a cheaper source and bring it to market. NOT to just pass laws and think that the government fairy will leave a quarter under our bed for voting the right way.
For example, electric is a good way to go, but we don't have the infrastructure for it (yet) and clean battery technology is not there (yet). But we can move more easily in that direction with more efficient and thus cheaper electricity production: nuclear power. Half the cost is the government hurdles just to get a plant approved and built. Anyone serious about climate change who doesn't have nuclear power on the table is a fucking idiot.
Agree 100 percent.
The consequences of mandating electric heat in cold climate zones may be catastrophic. We lost 47 people to cold in last December's Buffalo snowstorm that downed power lines. Had everyone been using electric heat there would have been thousands of frozen human corpses.
Electric heating is the worst way to heat a home. It is not only inefficient but exposed to power fades and blackouts.
All while overloading the electrical grid too at the same time.
What more could a progressive want?
"...Advocates say those laws help curtail climate change by reducing natural gas consumption and protect people's health by reducing in-home emissions..."
Advocates are full of shit.
I have this woodchipper....
Require everyone to use electric appliances, cars, etc. and quit generating electricity with fossil fuels that currently provide almost 65% of electricity generation.

Then get into your "Quiet Place" and say: Ohmmmmm! 😉
Only when people misuse chargers. Electric car batteries almost never catch fire. Neither to batteries in computers or smartphones. The problem is mostly limited to electric bikes charged using the wrong chargers.
Ackshuyally, charging a battery while simultaneously powering something can cause a fire. Instruction manuals of many battery-powered items also warn against mixing battery types e.g. Alkaline with Ni-Cd or Lithium-Ion.
While much safer than Amish oil lanterns, battery-operated devices, like everything else in existence, are not 100 percent safe.
And no one has, nor will do fuck all to stop it from steamrolling onward. Unless you are writing about comparative advantages of energy sources, no!
These kinds of regulations at a national level make little sense. The most obvious example may be the water saving restrictions. In some areas, particularly California, water is a huge issue. Living in a desert will do that. Saving every scrap of water is important if you are going to put tens of millions of people in desert cities.
But in other areas, water is not a scarce resource. The great lakes region has water coming out of their ears. They dont need low flow toilets and shower heads.
Banning plastic straws in Indianapolis is just silly, there being no màrine life to endanger. And natural gas for heating, hot water and cooking is necessarily going to be more efficient than electricity, being a direct use of heat for the heat itself. You might have a region where solar or hydro is preferable for peculiar local regions, but it still argues for keeping this stuff local.

In short, this is a terribly regressive environmental policy.

Urbanites forget that rural dwellers need gas appliances that continue working when the electricity goes out. (At most, then we only need generators to run a water pump and refrigerator.)
