YouTube Abandons Election Misinformation Policy That Censored Political Speech
"We find that while removing this content does curb some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech."

YouTube will no longer remove content that promotes false claims about U.S. elections—a tacit admission that the platform's aggressive crackdown on misinformation about the 2020 presidential election had negative consequences for political expression.
The company announced the change on Friday.
"The ability to openly debate political ideas, even those that are controversial or based on disproven assumptions, is core to a functioning democratic society—especially in the midst of election season," wrote site administrators in a blog post.
This is a marked departure from the policy in place at YouTube for the last two years. Content moderators vigorously policed claims that former President Donald Trump had actually won the 2020 election. Indeed, their efforts were so aggressive that at one point YouTube actually censored a video released by the January 6 committee—which was attempting to hold Trump accountable for spreading election-related falsehoods—because the video contain footage of Trump saying something untrue.
Under the policy, YouTube was unable to distinguish between videos aimed at spreading misinformation and videos aimed at reporting on the spread of misinformation. These mistakes hurt Rising, the news show I host for The Hill, which is released primarily on YouTube. In March 2022, the platform suspended The Hill for violating the election misinformation policy after two of our videos included footage of the stolen-election claims. As I explained at the time:
YouTube has taken the position that merely acknowledging an utterance of the false claim is the same thing as making the claim yourself unless you correct and disavow it elsewhere in the video. (It is also sufficient to post a warning label in the video's description that a false election claim makes an appearance. YouTube is thus moving in the direction of trigger warnings.)
This is a policy that effectively outlaws straight news reporting on YouTube. Say a news channel creates a video that merely intends to provide viewers with footage of a Trump speech or interview—minus any additional commentary—where he makes claims about the election. That video is, according to YouTube, in violation of its misinformation policy if the creator does not call out or correct the claims.
By reversing course, YouTube seems to be acknowledging that policing misinformation comes with notable downsides.
"In the current environment, we find that while removing this content does curb some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech without meaningfully reducing the risk of violence or other real-world harm," wrote YouTube administrators.
It should be noted that YouTube still intends to take action against content that seeks to mislead viewers about how to vote and on what days elections take place. In the past, this policy has prompted social media companies to moderate election-related jokes and satire, so YouTube might have been better served gutting this provision as well. Even so, it's encouraging to see a platform moving toward greater transparency and permissiveness, albeit many years too late.

FACEBOOK, which owns Utube, is very much still in the censorship business. Try this: flip to the Washington Post page and a Trans article. Support parents rights and suggest that some folks stay away from kids, be polite but insistent. In 24 hours you will be blocked for 3 to 6 days.
ACEBOOK, which owns Utube, is very much still in the censorship business.
?!!
Google owns [You]Tube, unless 'Utube' is some platform I've never heard of.
Second, you're right about their disinformation policy in general. They've abandoned nothing, I suspect, just like the Feds "dropping" the Department of Disinformation hasn't caused them to curb their censorship efforts one iota.
This article is sad. Robby completely agrees with their labeling of false information regardless of any aspects having since been proven true. He also ignores that for the most part the stuff being taken down was never proven to be wrong. It was all claimed to be false by authorities who had conflicting interests and were shown to be lying about other things. He is only upset because his videos got hit even while he was sucking establishment cock.
This "change in policy" only tells me that it is no longer politically necessary for them to lay a heavy hand on this specific subject. I have zero faith that they will stop censoring on partisan lines since they have been doing it for far longer than 2 years. My assumption is that they will use the same amount of excessive force (as seen in the last 3 years) in censoring whatever is required as the next election season heats up.
Hamilton68 meant well.
facebook does not own youtube. get a clue
First impression: Don't believe, something else is going on inside Youtube.
Second impression: 2024 is coming up and it's not looking good for certain candidates. Denying elections might be the New Black.
Particularly if the electorate push past the fudge factor and the Russian fraud/#Resist narrative needs to be trotted out again.
Lying about elections is allowed of it's useful for Democrats so this policy will last only until it becomes useful to deny the people a voice again.
Denying elections might be the New Black.
Potentially a bit of paranoid schizophrenia about leaving up or pulling down "we have put together I think the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics."
A redeaux of 2016 Hilary Clinton and Stacey Abrams may be back in vogue in Fall of '24.
YouTube is still in the heavy moderation and truth editorial business (platform or publisher? Hmmm...). The "election denialism" is but one "topic" that they specifically look out for, within a broader policy of "truth detection" that remains rock-bottomed and copper-sheathed at Youtube.
"censored a video released by the January 6 committee—which was attempting to hold Trump accountable for spreading election-related falsehoods"
Yeah... that's definitely what they were attempting, Robby.
Say, if you go off narrative will Charles Koch steal your hair?
Why did it occur to YouTube to police misinformation in the first place?
It didn't. It was occurred for them, and they followed orders.
We'll see how long this lasts.
August 2024
I appreciate that absolutely insane, demonstrably false political commentary is allowed on Youtube.
For example the video in which Keith Olbermann announced Trump is finished in November of 2017. Because that was the era of Mueller-mania and KO was cynical enough to tell his #Resistance idiot audience what it wanted to hear. It's useful to have a permanent record of this stuff.
#TheBestComedyIsOftenUnintentional
Was Mueller a villain or a patsy?
A demented patsy.
I believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and YouTube.
Shall we openly debate vaccine efficacy and constitutional rights while we're at it? How many people will die because YouTube refuses to do its damn job and demonetize and delete content I don't like.
No. Only election disinformation is allowed. You’ll have to take your talk about all the evidence that Trump stole nuclear secrets and that NATO is probably supporting a war on the side that effectively perpetrated an act of war directly against NATO member states (and Russia) somewhere else.
This doesn't happen if Musk doesn't buy Twitter.
Word!!
They are getting ready for Biden/Harris to make claims of fraud in 2024.
No, they're positioning himself to be on the right side of Der Fuhrer should he get back into the White House, so the Great Orange Pussy-Grabber doesn't ban them.
Well, at least they're to the right side of TDS-addled steaming piles of lefty shit, TDS-addled steaming piles of lefty shit.
Fuck off and die.
OK, so we agree that the current WH does actually hold a ban hammer and derivative go/no go authority on any given story they publish.
So the operators of "Youtube" have learned essentially nothing from experience. The purpose of having principles is that they are not "situational" - that is, you can apply those principles to any novel situation you are facing to help you determine how you should react. If your policies change during an election, potentially influencing the outcome, only to be reversed two years later with an "Oops! Maybe we made a mistake back then" after it's way too late to undo the damage, that's an example of "situational ethics." If your principle - for example, "We simply provide the platform and take no responsibility for the truth of what is posted. We will only remove clearly illegal posts that threaten harm to others." - does not change from one situation to another, then it's worthwhile.
At least their meddling won't affect the 2024 election.
Thank goodness...
It's about time for the people to tell the Nazi's where to SHOVE-IT!
There might be hope for this nation after all.

Well, most Americans have been telling Nazis where to shove it since World War Two. The problem now is how to tell who the nazis are. Are the nazis limited to groups with Aryan or Nazi in their monikers? Or are the nazis anyone who believes that the group is more important than the individual and that everyone one must work towards the good of the group – as defined by The Leader – under force if necessary? I suppose it might help with the definition if the criteria included blaming scapegoats for all the problems you perceive with society.
[Na]tional So[zi]alist[s] - The term is already defined.
Thanks for the clarification. Which National Socialists have "the people" told to "shove it" finally?
YouTube telling the Nazi's in government to shove their censorship requests.
censorship is the mark of failure. and socialists.
Fascists, General; don't forget fascists.
They've always allowed democrats to claim the election they lost was stolen, youtubers claim that the Gore, Hillary and Abrams elections were stolen even to this day without issue, it was only the 2020 election they wouldn't allow anyone to claim was stolen.
Fuck youtube, the platform still heavily censors any opinions that run counter to the woke mob.
I think Musk/Twitter exposed that the real culprit was Nazi's in D.C.
Desperate to remain relevant now that Twitter allows free speech, Youtube relaxes some of their censorship.
The great irony is that Youtube never had the least ability to determine what was "misinformation." The arrogance in claiming that knowledge was the dead giveaway that it was political censorship.
A friend of mine recently advised me of a great site called Tubidy. This site works on the simple principle of converting music video formats to audio files. For example, from YouTube to MP3. Thus, all videos that can be played on streaming sites can be converted to M P3 format through this site. The website then also allows you to turn your favorite songs into an audio format for endless offline entertainment.
