DeSantis Announces Too-Online Campaign in Most Online Way Imaginable
Plus: A.I. helps a paralyzed man walk again, how Wall Street is preparing for a possible U.S. debt default, and more...

After months of speculation—and some brief technical difficulties—Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made it official: He's running for president.
DeSantis filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday afternoon and launched his campaign by joining Elon Musk for a Twitter Spaces interview a few hours later. The rollout was a bit rocky: DeSantis' speech was delayed for about 20 minutes as Twitter navigated issues apparently caused by too many users jamming into the virtual room. "The servers are straining somewhat," Musk said at one point. For much of that time, users (those who weren't dropped from the Space) heard a combination of silence, hold music, and intermittent crosstalk.
Once he got going, however, DeSantis rattled through a shortened version of the stump speech that he's been workshopping at conservative confabs around the country for the past several months—stressing his military background, his gubernatorial record of attacking anything deemed "woke," and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. "I am running for president of the United States to lead our great American comeback," he promised.
After first half hour of disaster, it was an awkward speech/podcast hybrid. But DeSantis was able to give long substantive answers on issues he wants to highlight: COVID, education, immigration, big tech. We'll see how they play in formats/news cycles that aren't this.

There will be plenty of time to dissect DeSantis' record and policy aims. What's most interesting, right now, is the decision to hold the long-awaited launch of his presidential campaign in such an unorthodox setting. Asked by Musk, after the technical glitches abated, why he would want to "take the chance" of holding the announcement via Twitter, DeSantis pivoted awkwardly to talk about COVID-19 again: "Do you go with the crowd," he said, or "cut against the grain?"
Upending the tired norms of campaigning is a fine goal, but there seems to be more than that happening here. Announcing a bid for the White House on Twitter, alongside Musk—who has become a cult hero to a certain type of conservative who spends too much time worrying about trolling the political left—is a deliberate choice, and one that tells you something about how DeSantis is framing his candidacy.
Because it's not as if there weren't other options available to him—options that might have provided a sunnier, more optimistic setting for an "American comeback" message than what effectively amounted to a conference call on a social media platform that most Americans don't use.
If I were the Republicans governor of Florida and I were running for President I'd announce at one of the many massive football stadiums in my state because I am tethered to the people of my state and they care about fun, faith and football, and I am a normal joy filled person
— Jane Coaston ????️ (@janecoaston) May 23, 2023
But it's conservatives on Twitter who DeSantis views as his national base, as he sets to the task of expanding his brand beyond Florida. As governor, DeSantis has cultivated support among what we might call the "Too Online" faction of conservative politics by engaging in a number of high-profile stunts seemingly designed to appeal to exactly that crowd. Whether feuding with Disney, banning critical race theory in schools, or cruelly shipping undocumented migrants to Martha's Vineyard, DeSantis has mastered the use of state power to raise his profile within the subset of Americans who get their jollies by liking and retweeting content that "owns the libs."
That doesn't mean it won't work, of course. Former President Donald Trump wielded Twitter as a powerful tool during his rise to stardom (and the presidency) within Republican politics. DeSantis probably isn't wrong to sense that cultivating support on Twitter matters—not least because the platform provides a conduit to speak directly to the fans, without having to use the traditional media. Other prominent conservatives have too:
https://twitter.com/Foudroyant/status/1661087366897909764
The downside, as anyone who has used Twitter can tell you, is that it's not a particularly serious place. If DeSantis' pitch is that he can be a more competent version of Trump, then Wednesday's rollout was a failure and not just because of the technical issues. Playing to the Twitter crowd is not a way to demonstrate leadership. If anything, it shows the opposite: that DeSantis is willing to let the online culture wars and political trolling guide his campaign, as it has guided his time as governor.
Throw Trump into the mix, and that's a recipe for a Republican presidential primary that seems unlikely to move the country closer to solving the big issues. A fight over who is more well-liked among the Too Online Republicans is going to be ugly and dumb:
Don't expect a campaign that appeals to suburban moderates.
Very conservative Republicans are the most up-for-grabs between Trump and DeSantis, currently solidly in Trump's camp but DeSantis previously tied post-midterms.
They are the key battleground in this primary. pic.twitter.com/Hlt6Qg8e0u
— Patrick Ruffini (@PatrickRuffini) May 24, 2023
And what to make of those technical glitches that derailed the start of DeSantis' Twitter town hall? Did we just witness another moment like Howard Dean's infamous "scream" or Michael Dukakis' tank—a campaign event so cringeworthy that it doesn't just sink a promising candidate, but becomes a permanent part of the political lexicon? Unlikely. Despite the overblown reactions from some in the media, this whole incident will be mostly forgotten by the end of the week and probably rates as little more than a humorous anecdote in the books that will be written about the 2024 campaign.
Here's the thing: The Republican primary contest is going to feature such a cacophony of terrible ideas—war with China, more immigration restrictions, banning gender transition treatments for adults, war with Mexico, more government control over the internet, etc.—that we'll probably end up fondly remembering Wednesday's mess, which denied freedom to no one except those of us professionally obligated to sit through it.

A man paralyzed below the hips in a 2011 motorcycle accident has control over his lower body for the first time in 12 years, thanks to an "artificial intelligence thought decoder" that translates signals from his brain into electrical signals that move muscles, The New York Times reports. If it's true that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, then what neuroscientists have accomplished with Gert-Jan Oskam should be regarded as miraculous:
In a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers in Switzerland described implants that provided a "digital bridge" between Mr. Oskam's brain and his spinal cord, bypassing injured sections. The discovery allowed Mr. Oskam, 40, to stand, walk and ascend a steep ramp with only the assistance of a walker. More than a year after the implant was inserted, he has retained these abilities and has actually showed signs of neurological recovery, walking with crutches even when the implant was switched off.…
Andrew Jackson, a neuroscientist at Newcastle University who was not involved in the study, said: "It raises interesting questions about autonomy, and the source of commands. You're continuing to blur the philosophical boundary between what's the brain and what's the technology."
Dr. Jackson added that scientists in the field had been theorizing about connecting the brain to spinal cord stimulators for decades, but that this represented the first time they had achieved such success in a human patient.
This is exactly the sort of thing that's at stake in the debate over how to handle the future development of artificial intelligence.
Amazing! ???? And each time you read another article about another little #AI or robotic-assisted miracle like this -- and it IS a miracle -- ask yourself how an "AI pause" might stop the next one from happening. https://t.co/IgueGXNW80

If the U.S. defaults on its debt payments next month, the stability of the country's financial markets could hinge on…"a series of conference calls." The Wall Street Journal takes a look at how investors are preparing for the possibility of an unprecedented event:
Under Wall Street's plan, though, investors would be able to keep trading all U.S. Treasurys, even those with past-due interest or principal payments. Chaos and confusion would be kept at bay through a series of conference calls, each with an agenda already organized by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association trade group….
The main purpose of both calls would be to answer a key question: whether the Treasury Department had decided to delay, by a single day, a principal payment due the following morning. Were that to happen, trading of affected U.S. Treasurys could take place essentially as normal.
QUICK HITS
• Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) says "some progress" has been made toward reaching a deal with the White House to avoid a debt default early next month.
• On the day he announced his run for the presidency, DeSantis also signed a bill changing Florida's law that required office holders to resign before running for another office.
• Inflation has slowed. Is it time to worry about deflation instead?
• Why people like sad songs.

We are finally allowed to talk about DeSantis. We, are, aren’t we?
Be quiet sarc.
You never stopped.
Everyone always was allowed to talk about Desantis.
However, we gave Reason shit because of the clearly overtly hack, biased, Desantis hit pieces, making it painfully obvious they have a raging hate boner for the guy. So many pieces about how he's an evil authoritarian while skipping the overt, daily authoritarianism from the left, which makes their bias clear.
I don't think it's just that. Yes they hate him, but its more a demonstration that Reason is stuck in the leftist narrative bubble.
Right now the left needs Trump to win the primary, as he's really the only one Biden can beat. So hit pieces on DeSantis abound. Rather than trying to cultivate a libertarian narrative of their own, Reason writers use the one they're comfortable with.
And I don't think this is actually a coordinated strategy at Reason.
For all his condescension about Twitter as being an unserious place, Boehm and many Reasonistas live on the site. It is where they consume news other than from their cloistered burbs around DC. These idea bubbles are incubators for Leftist narratives.
He quoted that editor from NYT who says what she would do if SHE were running for president. Why? She is not an expert. She obviously doesn't WANT the GOP to do the right things. (Indeed, if he announced in a football stadium to play up patriotism and redneck social signalling, there is ZERO chance she would be praising it.) But it is one of thousands of hot takes circulating around Twitter among the Blue Bubble. That bubble quickly filters out chaff and promotes the most effective tweets for the Narrative.
And that is what is so sad. Reason is supposed to be the place of Free Minds, and yet ENB and Boehm are complete slaves to the blue bubble. Their work is nothing more than the lowest of low effort cherrypicking of unserious (by Boehm's own admission) blue-bubble takes. They would be utterly shocked to find that outside of their cloister, their takes are seen as completely tone deaf.
As long as Reason is run from DC it will be shit. Like everything else from DC.
KMW is killing it.
Let's see if Reason wrote anything disingenuous about DeSantis today...
On the day he announced his run for the presidency, DeSantis also signed a bill changing Florida's law that required office holders to resign before running for another office.
So, the Two-Minutes-Hate crowd is most likely to read that as: "DeSantis can't even run for President and still be Governor and is a big fat hypocrite with the power and willingness to change any rule inconvenient for him."
Just reading the link provided we can see that the hot-take, while technically not a lie, brings attention to DeSantis is an easily misunderstandable way for signing a law that the legislature claims couldn't have applied to DeSantis because he is barred by term limits from reelection. That meets the criteria for disingenuous to me.
The law was changed through the correct legislative process. Yet youre mad about it and think it is hypocritical. Why?
Apologies. Thought this was jeff complaining about the law change.
"Right now the left needs Trump to win the primary, as he’s really the only one Biden can beat."
LOL
Amazing how easily some fall for the regime narrative
Am I wrong? Where I live we had people running for the county board who won their seats by saying "I will oppose Trump." I have friends I used to be able to discuss politics with who lose all sense of reason and proportion when the name Trump is mentioned. He is a turnout machine for the Democrats. Who is left to convince? All the "I would have voted against Biden if I had known X" is just cope.
And just because he is the only one who Biden can beat, doesn't mean that Biden will beat him. I certainly will enjoy the delicious irony if Biden loses to his hand picked opponent and we get four more years of Trump. Just because that irony would be great doesn't mean we should be amplifying narratives by leftists who are hellbent on seeing Trump win the nomination.
Let me guess.,, California?
Yes, we know. Reason never says anything critical of Democrats:
https://reason.com/2023/05/25/taxing-the-rich-will-have-no-meaningful-effect-on-our-sky-high-national-debt/
"Whenever we have a national conversation about government debt, Democrats invariably respond that spending is not the reason the debt is now nearly equal to our national GDP. The real cause of our indebtedness, they inform us, is that taxes aren't high enough and the rich don't pay their fair share."
https://reason.com/2023/05/24/surgeon-general-report-vivek-murthy-social-media-kids-harm/
"In that sentence, Murthy neatly summarizes the position of various lawmakers, psychologists, tech whistleblowers, and now the Biden administration as well: Given a lack of overwhelming evidence that social media is completely safe, great caution is warranted."
It's the ratio fucknut. Picking two examples doesn't disprove the anything. On the same day the ran that article they ran multiple articles attacking the Republicans.
They continue to create strawman arguments about this. It is amazing watching. You can correct them as to what the argument is dozens of times but they continue to retreat to strawman arguments. Usually with claims we say reason never criticizes democrats which nobody has claimed.
Ironically if you go through the comments on the articles posted, the usual people called leftists here are either absent or attacking the right instead.
Look at the examples White Mike provided. Their criticism of Democrats is little more than passive-aggressive snark. Where they come right out and accuse Republicans of being authoritarian.
And none of the 3 actually blame the democrats. Just barely mentioned in any of them.
https://reason.com/2023/05/19/did-the-pentagon-just-make-a-3-billion-accounting-error-or-did-it-do-something-even-worse/
"The Pentagon’s “accounting error” will allow President Joe Biden to send an extra $3 billion in military aid to Ukraine without congressional approval. Was this deliberate?"
Was this deliberate?
Perfect example of passive-aggressive snark. They would gleefully explain exactly how DeSantis' actions were deliberate if he were the one funneling money to foreign powers with no accountability.
I.e. cruelly shipping undocumented migrants to Martha's Vineyard,
CRUELLY!!
Sending people with their approval to one of the most exclusive areas in the country is CRUEL.
I guess being among the smug, ignorant, unprincipled Progs really is cruel. Sorry I complained.
Hey look! Liarson Maneuver.
No one said they never criticize democrats. Mike is pulling shit out of his ass.
Do you think Mike does it out of religious zealotry or is he just contriving?
I said "conniving" but my phone put "contriving" and I didn't catch it.
Oh well, that works too.
This just in!
https://reason.com/2023/05/25/panicked-by-fentanyl-analogs-biden-embraces-the-mandatory-minimums-he-claims-to-oppose/
"When he ran for president in 2020, Joe Biden repudiated his long history of pushing harsh penalties for nonviolent drug offenses, calling for the abolition of mandatory minimum sentences. 'Biden supports an end to mandatory minimums,' his campaign said. 'As president, he will work for the passage of legislation to repeal mandatory minimums at the federal level.' But by endorsing a bill aimed at cracking down on fentanyl analogs, Biden is doing exactly the opposite."
Everyone always was allowed to talk about Desantis.
You need to discuss that with your fellow conservative commenters, several of whom have said it is not OK to talk about DeSantis.
Give a single example of someone saying that white Mike.
I feel certain he’ll provide a link, lol
Always were.
Everyone that complains just wants them to also talk about assholes like Roy Cooper.

the biggest complaint by those that hate is that he chose to use Twitter to announce his presidency. Clearly he is not qualified since he didn't us MSM for the correct blessings of his campaign
The above blog post does not rise to the level of “complaint” or “hate”. It is mere mockery. Are we so sensitive and so devoid of libertarian spirit that mocking politicians triggers us?
Are we so sensitive and so devoid of libertarian spirit that mocking politicians triggers us?
The amount of irony in this statement, given the source, is enough to blot out the sun.
Carping about DeSantis for not holding the standard, completely forgettable staged media event where you pack a stadium with a bunch of slathering, foaming at the mouth fans - that's all you got?
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35,000 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,000 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.

cruelly shipping undocumented migrants to Martha's Vineyard, …
That one word tells you all you need to know about the author!
DeSantis filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday afternoon and launched his campaign by joining Elon Musk...
Owning the libs right out of the gate.
“Announcing a bid for the White House on Twitter, alongside Musk—who has become a cult hero to a certain type of conservative who spends too much time worrying about trolling the political left—is a deliberate choice, and one that tells you something about how DeSantis is framing his candidacy.”
This says all you need to know about Boehm. If you are a conservative who has been concerned that the White House and various Alphabet Soup Agencies were conspiring with the private sector to silence voices, well you are merely spending your time worrying about trolling the left.
Let’s note that what Musk has revealed via the Twitter Files is not a conservative publicity stunt. But since it wasn’t Boehm tribe that was being singled out and silenced, anyone bringing it up is just trolling. Glenn Greenwald? Troll. Mat Taibbi? Troll. Bari Weiss? Troll.
Edit: Boehm, not ENB.
As pointed out Boehm. But st this point it is obvious they all push the same narratives. His last paragraph is straight gaslighting.
Remember, Boehm reluctantly voted for Biden.
Enthusiastically, reluctantly. Both mean the same thing.
there was a strategery to it or something
Here's the thing: The Republican primary contest is going to feature such a cacophony of terrible ideas—war with China, more immigration restrictions, banning gender transition treatments for adults, war with Mexico, more government control over the internet, etc.
And He'll do so again
Man, Overt, you have a real chip on your shoulder.
You whine here daily about your inability to sexually groom children.
It must be miserable being all that worked-up about politics while only having a one, single, meaningless vote. Not voting is freeing because you don't get worked-up, and your vote still doesn't matter!
I think it must be Overt 's mission to see to it that every soul on the Internet understands conservatives to be the kind, caring, sweet, innocent, gentle, generous, pure and noble creatures that he knows them to be. They do not have a single negative thought in their entire collective consciousness. So everything that they say is of course well meaning and full of good intentions. So how dare Boehm accuse Musk of trolling. Just look at the Twitter Files! That is PROOF that Elon Musk is a SAINT that is beyond reproach. Shame on Boehm! Shame!
Someone says something critical about conservatives and the whole troop throws poop in unison. It would be funnier to watch if it wasn't so gross.
Like you and Mikey do anytime anyone even dares criticize Reason?
Um, no. Like you and your buddies whenever Reason is critical of Republicans from a libertarian point of view.
It’s been a hot minute since they wrote something from a “libertarian perspective” that wasn’t bothaideism or Republicans bad.
Even when they tsk tsk Democrats, like in the tax post, it’s not necessarily a libertarian argument they’re making.
"Reason supports free trade! They're leftists hurr durr!"
*poops in hand and throws it*
"Reason doesn't want to build a wall! They're leftists hurr durr!"
*poops in hand and throws it*
"Reason supports states deciding abortion instead of a federal ban! They're leftists hurr durr!"
*poops in hand and throws it*
Also, if it's shit throwing, can you name which Republican candidate is pushing for war with China? Or wants to ban gender treatment for adults as Boehm contends? Which ones? Unless you can, then it appears you are the one throwing shit to defend an obviously biased and false statements by a Reason writer. If none of the candidates stated these positions than Boehm is lying and those criticizing him have a valid point and are not throwing shit. But you can't even entertain that thought.
I'm not defending anything. I'm laughing at people who are getting emotional and worked-up about things over which they have absolutely no control. Personally I think it's insane.
No, you're attacking people who criticize Reason and then claiming you aren't when called out on it. Which you do all the time. Kinda like you insulting people and then whining when people insult you. It's obvious to anyone who reads the comment section routinely. But you'll deny you do this because you never admit you're own guilt.
Is this going to be one of those days were you do everything you accuse me of doing while finding no instances of me actually doing what you said I did?
I've already posted an example sarc. This thread is also full of them.
Sarc still going with the 'I know you are but what am I' to deflect any criticism of him. Paul is that you?
Your posts are all emotional dumdum.
Is this going to be one of those days were you do everything you accuse me of doing while finding no instances of me actually doing what you said I did?
How is that not throwing poop? And you threw first!
Commentors consistently post examples of you doing things you say you don't and you just pretend those posts don't exist.
Yeah, notice when called on it he goes to the 'I know you are but what am I' defense. He always blames others for doing what he is the one actually doing. And then claims it's in self defense when if you look at the time stamps of comments, he is generally the one who drew first blood. It's fucking disingenuous and sanctimonious and hypocritical all at the same time.
"Someone says something critical about conservatives and the whole troop throws poop in unison."
My god how can one person be so self-unaware? I remarked on one specific point, and you and Chemjeff both get started on this "Hur dur, Overt so stupid!" circle jerk.
Your levels of projection are off the charts.
Can you get a little more worked up over nothing? It's funny to imagine you yelling at the screen.
Like you did upthread to me? Oh yes, you can insult others and expect them to take it but when we dare even criticize you, were the ones attacking.
Or was it someone else who posted this disingenuous shit take:
Is this going to be one of those days were you do everything you accuse me of doing while finding no instances of me actually doing what you said I did?
"It’s funny to imagine you yelling at the screen."
I'm not yelling, Sarc. I am laughing.
Just a little hint: If your life experience leads you to conclude that any disagreement includes yelling, that is a clue that you are incapable of even the most basic adult relationships.
So, just how much straw did you stuff into that strawman?
Enough for sarc to jerk him off.
"I think it must be Overt ‘s mission to see..."
Now, see, here is some examples of those Good Faith Arguments that Chemjeff wants. If only we could all follow Chemjeff's dispassionate and HONEST argumentation, this place would be so much better.
Chemjeff, I know you were a bit embarrassed engaging in hyperbole (once again) about those evil Conservatives last night. But the way to save face is not doubling down on your caricatured, spittle-filled, lies about others. You will get far more mileage by calming down and thinking before you go off half cocked.
Here is jeffy, just yesterday, dissembling deflecting and distracting like a madman in support of sex changes for kids. He doesn't counter a single argument with logic, just a maze of shifted goalposts, retreats to the motte, and outright lies.
https://reason.com/2023/05/24/no-one-will-become-an-american-untilthe-border-is-secure/?comments=true#comment-10077812
Just a correction:
I am not in support of sex changes for kids. I am opposed to using state violence to ban medically valid procedures to treat sick kids, to which all parties have undergone proper consent.
And while you claim you were trying to persuade me yesterday by appealing to the NAP, what you did instead was demonstrate that you don't really understand what the NAP actually is. Reading a book to anyone is not an act of aggression. Words are not violence, no matter how many times leftists, or you, might claim that they are.
And if you really do want to have a productive conversation, you might start by giving a detailed response to this argument:
https://reason.com/2023/05/24/no-one-will-become-an-american-untilthe-border-is-secure/?comments=true#comment-10078479
How about this. We leave medical decisions involving children for treating valid medical conditions up to parents, doctors, counselors and therapists. They know far better what is in the child’s best interest than Ron Fucking DeSantis or Joe Fucking Biden. Government’s role can be to create regulations to ensure the decision-making is sound and the procedures follow an accepted standard of care. So if the government wants to require that there be a waiting period, and that there be multiple consultations, and that there be multiple opinions, and to require that all parties involved expressly give their affirmative consent with full knowledge of all of the risks involved, and to require that medical personnel strictly follow an established standard of care, then I would fully support that. But I can’t support outright banning it. That goes too far in abrogating the liberty of the parents to decide what’s best for their children.
I already addressed it. Gender dysphoria is not an appropriate diagnosis for any pre-pubescent child. It is not a "valid medical condition". No child "knows" that they are a woman trapped in a man's body. The brains of children are not yet developed enough as sexuality is triggered by hormones. They are being coached to imitate behaviors they can't possibly understand. The adults who are claiming they "knew" as children are delusional. The doctors promoting the therapies are self-interested.
The rest of your argument would is exemplary, but when you apply it to what I and others claim is an inappropriate psychological (not medical!) condition and refuse to brook argument based on your false association, you are being disingenuous. And parents are without question initiating sex change in children prior to puberty. Neither the doctors, nor the parents deny this.
In general, I don't give a shit what people do to their own kids. Their fucked up kids will not compete with my well-adjusted kids. But it has a high price for society and not allowing it is not a net loss of freedom. Kids too young to decide for themselves sometimes need protection from their parents bad decisions.
I already addressed it. Gender dysphoria is not an appropriate diagnosis for any pre-pubescent child. It is not a “valid medical condition”. No child “knows” that they are a woman trapped in a man’s body. The brains of children are not yet developed enough as sexuality is triggered by hormones. They are being coached to imitate behaviors they can’t possibly understand. The adults who are claiming they “knew” as children are delusional. The doctors promoting the therapies are self-interested.
So sayeth Dr. Chucky. Where did you get your M.D. again?
https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/gradeschool/Pages/Gender-Identity-and-Gender-Confusion-In-Children.aspx
Development of gender identity starts at a very early age, way before puberty. So it is absolutely possible, sadly, for a child to have a disorder in which their gender identity does not develop normally, so that by time puberty happens, and the hormones commence, the disorder can lead to some serious psychological problems.
And let's ponder your argument more deeply for a moment. Let us assume for a moment that you are correct and that the parents are delusional and the doctors are self-interested. If this is the case, then under what conditions can we trust parents and doctors to act in the child's best interests? If a doctor claims "your child needs a vaccine", then how do we know the doctor really wants to help the child, or if the doctor just wants to line his own pockets with sweet sweet Big Pharma dollars? Hmm?
If the substance of your argument is correct, then you ought to be pushing for the government not just banning gender affirming care, but for the government to be making ALL SORTS of health care decisions on behalf of the parents and the doctors. Because ACCORDING TO YOU, we cannot know if parents are acting rationally or not; we cannot know if doctors are acting professionally or unscrupulously. So by your standard, what role should government play in regulating health care for children?
psychological (not medical!) condition
The brain is a part of the body. Mental health is a part of overall medical health.
In general, I don’t give a shit what people do to their own kids. Their fucked up kids will not compete with my well-adjusted kids. But it has a high price for society and not allowing it is not a net loss of freedom.
Consider the precedent you are setting here. Once you establish that parents can't be trusted because they are delusional, and doctors can't be trusted because they are greedy, then what other health care decisions will government now force upon everyone? Hmm?
Kids too young to decide for themselves sometimes need protection from their parents bad decisions.
I agree with this. But from a libertarian perspective, the line between permissible and impermissible parental authority should be drawn so as to defer to the parents' wishes to the greatest extent feasible. So parental decisions that violate the NAP against their children would be a no-no. But FFS, reading a book to a kid is not aggression.
There are doctors who claim children having sexual pleasure is valid. Lysenokism was full of supporters. Fuck off jeff.
So sayeth Dr. Chucky. Where did you get your M.D. again?
Fallacy: appeal to authority. My credentials are irrelevant to the accuracy of my argument. I notice that in your link to Dr Rafferty, he does not cite a single reference in support of his opinions like, "All children need the opportunity to explore different gender roles and different styles of play." An inquiring mind would ask why he feels it necessary to promote this notion when the high estimates for actual gender dysphoria top out at about 0.3% of the population. For fuck's sake he is a pediatrician and psychiatrist that uses the phase "assigned gender" to describe something that even laymen can assert with 99.7% confidence.
The brain is a part of the body. Mental health is a part of overall medical health.
True, but easily countered. Lobotomies mitigate a lot of mental health issues, but no reputable mental health practitioner would preform one at the patient's request.
The rest of your argument is all straw men. You assign conclusions that I did not make in every case instead of countering what I actually argued. Fun fact: when you write out "Hmm?", you are unquestionably a mendacious twat.
My credentials are irrelevant to the accuracy of my argument
Then what is the basis for claiming your argument is accurate?
Gender dysphoria is not an appropriate diagnosis for any pre-pubescent child.
Prove it.
It is not a “valid medical condition”.
Prove it.
No child “knows” that they are a woman trapped in a man’s body.
Prove it.
The brains of children are not yet developed enough as sexuality is triggered by hormones.
We aren't talking about sexuality, we are talking about gender identity. Irrelevant.
They are being coached to imitate behaviors they can’t possibly understand.
That is a purely speculative assertion. I dare you to prove it.
The adults who are claiming they “knew” as children are delusional. The doctors promoting the therapies are self-interested.
And that is slanderous speculation. You cannot prove it.
For fuck’s sake he is a pediatrician and psychiatrist that uses the phase “assigned gender” to describe something that even laymen can assert with 99.7% confidence.
For the umpteenth time, gender is not the same as sex.
Did you ever stop to consider that instead of the entire world being full of pediatricians and psychiatrists who are all OBVIOUS QUACKS because they "can't tell the gender of a child like any layman can", instead of there being this gigantic cabal of quacks, instead, that you take a nanogram of humility and consider that maybe they are referring to a concept that you are not yet familiar, and that you should learn more about that concept - in this case, the concept of gender? It does not hurt to learn about different concepts even if you later find they are wrong.
For the umpteenth time, gender is not the same as sex.
If that was true, troons and pooners wouldn't need radical reconstructive surgeries and opposite-sex hormones, they'd just do the LARP and that would be that.
Did you ever stop to consider that instead of the entire world being full of pediatricians and psychiatrists who are all OBVIOUS QUACKS because they “can’t tell the gender of a child like any layman can”, instead of there being this gigantic cabal of quacks, instead, that you take a nanogram of humility and consider that maybe they are referring to a concept that you are not yet familiar, and that you should learn more about that concept – in this case, the concept of gender?
University professors have been promoting marxism as the cure of society's ills for decades. Doesn't mean they're correct, and no one should show humility in the face of those claims.
You cannot prove it.
Neither can any Doctor of Psychiatry. It is not a hard science. It is speculation based on anecdotal evidence.
Reading a book to anyone is not an act of aggression. Words are not violence, no matter how many times leftists, or you, might claim that they are.
Words are not violence. But since I never even hinted at that, bringing it up is a non sequitur, i.e., a fallacious distraction that plays on words to associate my position with authoritarian leftists in a vain attempt to discredit my argument.
That reading a book can't be an act of aggression is a reprehensible lie. Kids are ignorant. Preying on another's ignorance to promote your own ends is, without question, aggression, otherwise fraud wouldn't be a crime from a libertarian perspective.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fraud
So an ordinary lie is not fraud. The lie must be accompanied by the victim surrendering something of value or a legal right.
So once again, reading a book to a child is not aggression, it is not fraud, even if the book is full of lies.
You really don't understand this whole NAP thing, do you?
So an ordinary lie is not fraud. The lie must be accompanied by the victim surrendering something of value or a legal right.
A child's innocence has no value? Their mental health?
Their self-esteem? Their bodily integrity?
When they are taught that the Constitution is fundamentally flawed, and they advocate for hate speech laws and gun control, are they not giving up natural rights? When they are taught that capitalism is evil and socialism is inevitable, are they not deprived of their right to vote their conscience? When they are taught that human-caused global warming is going to end life on the planet and they suffer from anxiety have they not surrendered their mental health?
Yes, reading a book to a child can violate the NAP. Just because what they surrender is not immediate doesn't make it any less a fraud. It is shocking that you can't grasp that.
What should I feel embarrassed about? I am not the one who claimed I made some error in interpreting a candidate's words, when what I actually did was *use their exact words at face value*. What I didn't do, which is what you do continually, is give Republicans and conservatives the benefit of the doubt. I also wasn't the one who misused a logical fallacy that completely did not apply.
You constantly wail and moan about how horrible it is that the "deplorables" are looked down upon in flyover country. Maybe if you stopped trying to be the savior for the benighted conservative victims, and started looking at who conservatives REALLY ARE, you wouldn't be so quick to defend them all as pure noble saints who should be perpetually and continually given the benefit of the doubt. Both conservatives and liberals and libertarians and independents and everyone else are just people. Some are good people and some are bad people. And yes that means some of those "deplorables in flyover country" REALLY ARE DEPLORABLE and decent people like you should stop reflexively sticking up for them because they carry a Team Red label.
Stop being a White Knight for Red America and start instead looking at the world as it really is.
“What should I feel embarrassed about?”
Well I can't be sure, Chemjeff- but I can’t help but notice you are in here engaging on petty little snipes a mere 12 hours after I called out your perfidy. Maybe it has something to do with that?
“I am not the one who claimed I made some error in interpreting a candidate’s words, when what I actually did was *use their exact words at face value*”
I know. I pointed out the error to you.
For the record, when you are complaining that a candidate didn’t say something (as you did), it isn’t taking their words at face value. It is literally imputing meaning in words they *didn’t say*. You have accused these candidates of wanting to “violate Mexico’s territorial integrity”. And your “evidence” is that they have not denied such a thing.
If you don’t feel embarrassed about that, perhaps you should stop your childish lashing out, and spend some time thinking about what led you to such an embarrassing situation.
“”You constantly wail and moan about how horrible it is that the “deplorables” are looked down upon in flyover country. ”
To be clear, I “wailed and moaned” that you were misrepresenting what candidates have made a priority. And I was correct. Maybe instead of pretending you give any shits about what I believe deep down, you should focus on getting your facts straight.
“Stop being a White Knight for Red America and start instead looking at the world as it really is.”
If you gave an ounce of the skepticism to the left that I give to the right, I might believe your advice is anything more than so much shilling for your tribe.
Chemjeff: You are so blind Overt! I know you have criticized DeSantis’s stances against Disney, and defended Section 230. But all you do is run interference for the right! You should be more like me!
Also Chemjeff: Those authoritarians preaching lockdown and vaccine mandates meant well, so just give them a break, mkay? Let’s talk about evil Conservatives some more. Some of them (and by that, I mean all of them, obviously) aren’t that great, mkay?
You have accused these candidates of wanting to “violate Mexico’s territorial integrity”.
No, their territorial sovereignty. It is different.
Look, I don't know how I can make this any clearer.
DeSantis:
Last I checked, the Mexican drug cartels are in MEXICO. So he is literally saying that he wants to use the US military to go after Mexican drug cartels in Mexico. Now, you want me to ASSUME that he means "well, of course he would do so after proper diplomatic negotiations with the Government of Mexico". But that is an assumption. That is not what he said. And then, of course, you said:
You have made your own insane leap to conclusion that this does not include working with the Mexican Government.
See that? It is an "insane leap" to NOT give the benefit of the doubt to DeSantis or the other candidates and ASSUME that what they really MEANT when they said "use the military against Mexican drug cartels", was "let's do some peaceful diplomatic negotiations".
That is you White Knighting for Team Red.
And, by the way. I was not the only one in that discussion who said "say, that sure sounds like they want to invade Mexico". But I *was* the only one that you decided to criticize. If you're going to appoint yourself the Argumentation Cop, maybe you should enforce the rules a little bit more evenly. Unless... no.... that can't be.... unless, you were just being a tribal jerk about it. Could that be it? No way!
To be clear, I “wailed and moaned” that you were misrepresenting what candidates have made a priority.
No, you subtly shifted the goalposts about what issue was a "priority" or not. I don't give a shit about whether they think using the US military on Mexican drug cartels is a "priority" or not. Only you seem to care about that.
If you gave an ounce of the skepticism to the left that I give to the right, I might believe your advice is anything more than so much shilling for your tribe.
See, this is how it works.
Around here, there is a TON of criticism of Team Blue. Some of it is fair, but a LOT of it is completely unfair.
"Biden is a big-government authoritarian!" (fair)
"Biden is a COMMUNIST who hates America!" (unfair)
You will note that I don't criticize the fair criticisms of Team Blue. Because they're fair, and I largely agree with them. What I do take issue with, are the unfair criticisms.
Likewise, around here, there is (a little) criticism of Team Red, some of which is fair; there is praise of Team Red, again some of which is fair; but then there is praise of Team Red that is just ridiculous partisan shilling. That is undeserved praise, and I call that out.
"Trump started no new wars! Good for him!" (fair)
"Trump is the HERO that this country needs to thwart the RADICAL LEFT in their plot to DESTROY AMERICA!" (ridiculous)
So what I tend to do, is I criticize the ridiculous criticisms of Team Blue, and I criticize the ridiculous praise of Team Red. Since you don't seem to notice that I am actually not taking issue with the legitimate fair criticisms of Team Blue, nor with the legitimate fair praise of Team Red, you think I'm just being a tribal jerk. But that's not it. It's that you are not paying attention.
No, I don't think you should be more like me. One of me is quite enough. And no I genuinely do not believe that all conservatives are evil or "not great". Again as I said, conservatives, like liberals, like everyone else, are just people. Some are good and some are bad.
And yes I do think you tend to look at Team Red with rose-colored glasses. That doesn't mean you are a Jesse-esque abject shill, just that you see them as purer than they really are.
And while we are on the subject of the authoritarian COVID lockdowns. This gets back to the fair vs. unfair criticism thing again:
"Mandated government COVID lockdowns are a violation of the individual's fundamental liberties and should be opposed!" (fair)
"Mandated government COVID lockdowns represent the government trying to CONTROL you and force you to OBEY them in a scheme to transform the country into a dystopian hellscape!" (nutty and unfair)
Do you see the difference?
"It must be miserable being all that worked-up about politics "
Coming from ANYONE but you, this might mean something. But since you can't let a single article slip by without obsessively shit-posting the 50th retread of, "Conservatives are so mean to me and Reason. Waaaah!"
But let's note that once again, Sarc and Chemjeff- who claim to abhor bad faith insults and debate- both decided to engage in unsolicited ad hominem.
Coming from ANYONE but you, this might mean something.
You realize that's a textbook ad hominem right? You are judging what is said based upon the person. Then you accuse me of engaging in ad hominem attacks?
Too funny.
He's saying you cry "wolf!" a lot, but obviously you've, once again, managed to miss the point.
I just think it's funny when he accuses me of ad hominem attacks while making one. Like when the trolls accuse others of gaslighting while saying "You're wrong, this is what you really think!" The irony is so delicious.
Why are you amsued by that? You do it all the fucking time. That was literally Overts point. And everyone but you recognizes it apparently.
Must be quite something to be so self-unaware that one cannot understand that his comment started with an ad hominem argument and then he claims one was thrown at him.
sarcasmic 2 hours ago
It must be miserable being all that worked-up about politics while only having a one, single, meaningless vote. Not voting is freeing because you don’t get worked-up, and your vote still doesn’t matter!
Then Overt comments on this crap of yours:
Overt 28 mins ago
“It must be miserable being all that worked-up about politics ”
Coming from ANYONE but you, this might mean something. But since you can’t let a single article slip by without obsessively shit-posting the 50th retread of, “Conservatives are so mean to me and Reason. Waaaah!”
But let’s note that once again, Sarc and Chemjeff- who claim to abhor bad faith insults and debate- both decided to engage in unsolicited ad hominem.
If you didn't toss around the ad hominem arguments so willy-nilly, maybe you might not get anything tossed back at you.
Like when the trolls accuse others of gaslighting while saying “You’re wrong, this is what you really think!”
That is also not what gaslighting is. Your dissembling is just proving how ignorant you are.
It's also 100 percent accurate, given how worked up he is that kids might not get to have their sexual organs chopped off unless they go to their drug-addled zombieland blue state of their choice.
"You realize that’s a textbook ad hominem right? "
*shrug* Given that is how you started this conversation, you don't really deserve any better, do you?
For your comment to be an ad hominem attack, Sarcasmic would have had to have offered an honest and logical argument which you were refuting by pointing out something irrelevant.
“It must be miserable being all that worked-up about politics ” is not an honest and logical argument. It IS what he subsequently accused everyone criticizing him of: poop-flinging.
You realize that’s a textbook ad hominem right?
That is STILL not an ad hominem attack you dumbass!
That’s not an ad hominem as he’s not saying your argument about voting is wrong because X.
It’s just an insult.
I'm really starting to think Sarc might actually lack self awareness. I've been giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was being disingenuous and trolling. But I've come to realize he really doesn't understand why people criticize him and truly does believe it is all out undeserved, mean spiritedness. He really does believe he is the only true Scotsman on here, and thus anyone who disagrees with him is by extension a false Scotsman and obviously a conservative here only to defend the right. He truly does define libertarianism solely based on what Reason writes and that anyone who disagrees with Reason therefore cannot be a libertarian. Some people will never accept their own faults but project them onto others.
Sarc and Chemjeff- who claim to abhor bad faith insults and debate- both decided to engage in unsolicited ad hominem.
Speaking only for myself - If there is going to be a rational argument, then yes I expect it to be in good faith and properly conducted.
However, I refuse to treat every comment box as if it is a Master's level thesis in argumentation. Coming here is procrastination for me, and sometimes fun, and sometimes enlightening. So I reserve the right to also use the comment box for reasons other that pure reasoned argumentation. Such as with jokes, mockery, and the occasional trolling and shitposting.
People of good faith understand when an argument is intended to be an argument, and when a piece of satire or mockery is intended to be for what it is - not a comment in an Oxford-level debate, but an item of fun. People of bad faith, on the other hand, will read a piece of mockery, understand that it is not a serious argument, but nonetheless claim that it is an "argument in bad faith" only to try to denigrate the author.
" People of bad faith, on the other hand, will read a piece of mockery, understand that it is not a serious argument, but nonetheless claim that it is an “argument in bad faith” only to try to denigrate the author."
And then there are people like Chemjeff who will wail about how everyone mocks him and no one argues in good faith. Who laments that he can't have a good argument. And then will turn around and try to rationalize why it is ok when he does it.
I don’t think anyone here gets to say anything about being worked up by politics.
"Man, Overt, you have a real chip on your shoulder."
Perhaps. But that doesn't make what I said untrue.
"the Twitter Files is not a conservative publicity stunt"
Which is correct. It highlights bad actions by a bunch of individuals in big tech, the media, and govt. Those individuals just happen to all be progressives. Doesn't make it conservative to highlight the poor propagandistic behavior
No, it highlights bad behavior by people in government. The others were within their right as media site owners to moderate as they saw fit, or were in some cases coerced by the government.
Private actors were only bad if “bad” means they displeased conservatives.
What happened to Congressional efforts to fix it, by the way?
They worked at the behest of government to censor citizens retard. That is bad.
According to Mike, if you conspire to break the law it isn't bad.
So long as you conspire with government actors.
"who has become a cult hero to a certain type of conservative"
Member when Musk was the heckin space daddy, electric car making hero of the left? I member.
I too can *also* remember all the way back to "last year".
But DeSantis was able to give long substantive answers on issues he wants to highlight...
Boooooorrrring.
That's why ENB skipped over them, in order to tackle the more issue how Twitter sucks* (now that Elon took over).
*I agree but she doth protest too much with all the other tweets she goes on to reference and links to every morning.
Boehm!
My apologies to ENB. Boehm, you asshole, got me again!
Lol I didn't bother checking in my response either.
Meh, same initials. Probably the same person.
It's Boehm today. The absence of articles about abortion or hookers was the big tell.
and the this: "If it's true that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,"
Twitter does suck, look at all the mastadon links he referenced.

What abuses do you anticipate?

I give you a lot of shit, but I do appreciate when you post things like this.
DeSantis is so terrible that if he wins the nomination he just might force Koch-funded libertarians like Boehm to vote for Biden again.
#CheapLaborAboveAll
I was just noticing that both sides of this article or criticism essentially come from Twitter *and* amount to "too online Republicans bad". Any thoughts as to which candidate between the Trump and DeSantis is just a straw man/stalking horse/staged opposition for the Twitterati?
Also, Joe's chances still at 100% without boots on the ground in Ukraine?
I appreciate you take the time to read my comments, but in the future it might help to paraphrase them more faithfully.
"Also, Joe’s chances still at 100% without boots on the ground in Ukraine?"
There's still time for Biden's health to decline to the point where his handlers don't let him run again, so no, his chances aren't exactly 100%. Assuming Biden is the nominee, I still think he's the favorite against DeSantis (unless the economy gets worse) and the enormous favorite against Trump.
And the Ukraine angle you've apparently forgotten isn't just "boots on the ground," it's "killed in action."
Sorry, in all the spin of earnesty vs. satire, actual opposition vs. structured opposition, and random Twitter quotes provided as veracity of said opposition, it gets hard to remember the specific details of who made which specific 12-D chess move and who's just playing Calvinball.
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) says "some progress" has been made toward reaching a deal with the White House to avoid a debt default early next month.
This is a lie. Dark Brandon doesn't negotiate with debt terrorists.
On the day he announced his run for the presidency, DeSantis also signed a bill changing Florida’s law that required office holders to resign before running for another office.
I can’t imagine a more boring political hay making potential.

The financial situation in the us is dire. After svc and signiture bank collapse, the goverment sent a clear message to banks:
You can do anything you want and when you go bankrupt we will make you whole if
1. You are big
2. You donate to democrats
"2. You donate to democrats"
That's important, but not as important as 3. A lot of prominent Democrats have money tied up in your bank.
Inflation has slowed. Is it time to worry about deflation instead?
Lol.
Why people like sad songs.
Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain.
Because they say so much....
They reach into your room.
Paywalled so I am guessing the US taxpayer spent 10 million on figuring out what Elton already taught us.

Sad.
If you want a deal, you've got to make cuts.
https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_c3fce186-fa51-11ed-9f59-0ba82aded91c.html
U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday that the White House must agree to spending cuts as part of a debt deal.
"You have to spend less than you did last year," McCarthy said at a news conference. "That's not that difficult to do, but in Washington, somehow, that is a problem."
House Republicans passed a bill to reduce spending by $4.8 trillion and increase the debt limit by about $1.5 trillion, or until March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. The Republican bill would strip energy and environmental tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act and formally block Biden’s student loan cancellation. It also would put work requirements in place for some federal social programs, such as requiring Medicaid recipients to work 80 hours per month.
The Limit, Save, Grow Act would return total discretionary spending to the fiscal year 2022 level in fiscal year 2024 and cap annual growth at 1% for 10 years, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the measure would reduce budget deficits "by about $4.8 trillion over the 2023–2033 period."
You have to spend less than you did last year,” McCarthy said at a news conference. NO! Last year they used COVID to jack up spending to GDP to over 30% of GDP (WWII it hit 40%; during the Great Depression it hit 10%). It should now return to historic post war levels of 18% of GDP (1947 -2007). Instead he's increasing spending 7% (many trillions) to 25% of GDP with a 1% increase per year for ten years. We add 1.5 trillion to the debt and up to 20 trillion more by 2033. Social Security and Medicare continue to proceed to bankruptcy. This deal is aimed at one person - Donald Trump. Pass it and you have ceded de facto control over to the communists and the globalists and there will be no reversing it.
"Inflation has slowed. Is it time to worry about deflation instead?"
You know what I'm worried about? Reason's sugar daddy's net worth.
Seriously, why is Charles Koch doing so much worse than other American billionaires this year? Lots of large green numbers in that year-to-date column, until we get to Mr. Koch and find his inherited fortune is down over $6,000,000,000 for 2023. 🙁
Slowed... to just double historical rates!
This must be why we just got a burst of attack columns against anybody-bad-for-Biden last week.
I assume bohem is being compleatly disengenuous and the links he posted are eighter taken out of context or complete lies.
The one is about a bill in Missouri that wasn't written by anyone actually running for president. Also, I haven't yet heard any Republican campaign for war with China. Notice that one had no links. Gee, wonder why? Hmmm.
Mike and Sarc say were not supposed to point that out.
Culture wars!!
Because you almost always defend Reason whenever anyone criticizes them. You also continue to claim that they don't have a bias against the right, despite this being one of several examples of Boehm and ENB especially toeing the leftist lines (like you defending ENBs hottake on the Durham report, which even Robby called out). Look at the lines Boehm provides. One is a year old statement from some no name state representative from Missouri, that I bet his own constituents couldn't pick out of a line up. He also doesn't link to any evidence of Republicans wanting war with China. And links to a rather tenuous reading of what Republicans mean by saying use the military against cartels (which, BTW, our military has been working with the Mexican government on and off for two decades, so what they're proposing is not new). And calling shipping migrants to Marthyards Vineyard, a self proclaimed sanctuary community and one of the wealthiest communities in America inhumane, really? Inhumane to who, the cocktail crowd Boehm lives with, who actually had to put up or shut up and failed?
Meant for Sarc above. Oh well.
Because you almost always defend Reason whenever anyone criticizes them.
Not at all. I defend Reason when idiots equate disagreement with conservatives based upon libertarian principles with allegiance to the left.
Do you have a specific example?
No, you accuse anyone who disagrees with you of being a conservative therefore you can call any criticism of Reason conservative pounce. Like today, calling everyone for poo throwing for criticizing Boehm. We noted very specific problems with Boehm's take, not least his disingenuously linking to a year old story about a state representative's statements to imply it's a major issue in the Republican primary. Or stating they're calling for war with China with no evidence to support that. That is well reasoned criticism rather you agree or not. But to you it's just another example of 'conservatives' shit throwing (and by conservative we all know you mean anyone you disagree with, because you've labeled just about everyone but Jeffy and Mikey as conservative).
New Hunter Biden laptop website worked overtime to ‘redact genitalia’
.
“It has proven difficult to redact all the genitalia in a timely manner,” said Garret Ziegler, founder of nonprofit Marco Polo, which is developing the website and already hosts all of Biden’s laptop emails and texts in a searchable public database.
.
“For some of the videos, it’s taken my guy 20 man hours to redact all the genitalia.”
https://nypost.com/2023/05/20/website-hosting-hunter-biden-laptop-photos-to-launch-in-june/
Congress got their Hunter uncensored.
If they take out the dick pics, there is nothing left!
turd, the ass-clown of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
Jealous, Turd?
"worked overtime to ‘redact genitalia’"
Whoops, there goes your narrative that it was only about "Dick Pics!".
'....such a cacophony of terrible ideas...... Sure. After reading this hit piece, I expect a declaration of war against China to take place during his inauguration speech. ('...all those in favor, raise your hands...'). The rest of the list seems pretty sage and moderate when you examine them in context.
Ignoring that droolin' Joe has the US involved in a proxy war with Russia already; no discussion required.
We should have taken Mexico in 1846.
We're not going to do it now because a war with Mexico would last about 45 seconds and congress needs longer than that to get their war-boners hard
After 120 million war refugees cross the border the US will surrender.
So we'd best set up the minefields beforehand.
There is one salient point, though. How will Trump or DeSantis, whichever wins the Republican primary, have any chance of successfully “racing to the middle” after positioning themselves as hardcore conservatives?
Biden/Harris will win again with a strategy of representing the pinnacle of mediocrity.
Why do you care your going to vote for the war hungry, liberty stomping pedofile dems anyway
It's always funny when Mike tries to concern troll.
Remember how you and reason fell for Biden being a moderate in 2019? Ignoring his campaign platform? Good times.
What was extreme in DeSantis announcement? Half of it was government abuses such as covid. Oh. I see why you're against it.
Who defines the middle – reason writers, mainstream media, the dems in congress?
Defined by these groups the 'middle' is crazy left of Johnson, Kennedy, Carter etc
So only the Republicans have to worry about playing to the middle? Have you seen the polling on trans athletes? Gender affirming care? Reparations? Federal Spending? Etc?
Student loan forgiveness? The border? The economy? It seems to me by the polling, Democrats will have a harder time playing to the middle.
No need to worry about polling. The elections will be extra fortified
yup
Biden/Harris will win again with a strategy of representing the pinnacle of mediocrity.
So they got your vote.
war with China, more immigration restrictions, banning gender transition treatments for adults, war with Mexico, more government control over the internet, etc.
No one is advocating war with China or Mexico, you lying cunt.
And i noticed you added "for adults" in the gender transition bit. Which party is pushing it for prepubescent children?
And 1 party advocates war with russia
Boehm provides the worst reading of every potential issue.
Musk is just a troll for the Liberals- not a guy who exposed actual censorship by proxy.
Some random legislator in Missouri suggests raising the age of trans surgeries to 25, and that becomes "the primary will be about banning trans surgery for adults".
Standard rhetoric about drugs becomes "they're trying to invade mexico, argh!"
Yeah, and I note he didn't even link anything that remotely supports his supposition about Republicans campaigning for war with China. The rest is really reaching, is the Missouri state Rep running for President? If not why the fuck bring him up except guilt by association? Which Boehm has also condemned when Republicans do it to Democrats. He is so libertarian.... Fuck, this is getting pretty fucking bad.
Progs don't needs links, citations, or evidence. They know their audience, and their audience is NEVER going to look into the substance of their claims. How many progs actually read the FL parental rights in education bill? They just heard "don't say gay" and had the emotional reaction the prog media was counting on.
I would support such a bill (as long as it also banned hormonal treatments) as 25 is about the age whatever pubescent processes humans need to be functioning, healthy adults complete. I don't understand our rush to mess with biochemistry we barely understand as is.
The derangement on race from the left is open and pernicious.
Black MAGAs are a clear and present danger
OPINION: As the American conservative movement has morphed from racist dog whistles and white-grievance politics to full-blown fascism and white nationalism, Black MAGAs have become foot soldiers in the fight against civil rights, voting rights and racial justice. All skinfolk ain't kinfolk.

They're off the plantation and therefore seen as not unlike Nat Turner.
I tried to read that drivel, but that's beyond aluminum foil hat level stupidity.

Legislation in Springfield would prevent highway crews from one county being contracted out to other counties.
Senate Bill 895 would amend the Illinois Highway Code and provide that a county cannot construct, improve or repair a road or transportation-related project that is outside the county’s borders.
“It prevents counties from becoming private contractors in other counties and has the work performed by union labor contractors that exists within those counties,” Johnson said.
A recent study by the Reason Foundation found that Illinois roads, particularly downstate, are in rough shape. The study ranked Illinois 44th in the condition of rural roads.

Is it time to worry about deflation instead?
You misspelled collapse.
"But that's kind of a deflation"
Pardon my economic ignorance, but wouldn't a bit of deflation reset and stabilize the currency?
If it was even slightly controlled, possibly.
This wouldn't be that.
Also somewhat economically ignorant, but not really.
Basic supply/demand curve - Inflation is a factor of decrease in production and/or increase in amount of money people have to spend. Deflation is the inverse of that.
What you want, economically, is mild inflation which would signify that the job market keeps growing (higher salaries, career growth, etc.) and that production is being led by demand (minimal inventories, solid supply chain logistics, etc.)
Uncontrolled deflation in our current economic state would mean people no longer have money to pay for anything they deem non-essential which creates an oversupply of product which causes the prices to go down which decreases profits which results in layoffs which results in people no longer having enough money to pay for anything non-essential.
The Republican primary contest is going to feature such a cacophony of terrible ideas—war with China, more immigration restrictions, banning gender transition treatments for adults, war with Mexico, more government control over the internet, etc.—that we’ll probably end up fondly remembering Wednesday’s mess, which denied freedom to no one except those of us professionally obligated to sit through it.
Only one in this list is even true. Lol. Wow Boehm. You outdid yourself.
It's bohem. If it was ENB abortion wold be mentioned
I edited in time. But yes I had ENB.
Just say you're gonna vote for Biden and be done with it, Boehm.
Fuck, I don't know how Mikey and Sarc can defend the blatant dishonesty that paragraph entails, but I see Mikey is already doing it.
What am I defending? I don't read JesseAz's lies, I mean posts.

He was busy calling everyone who disagrees with him conservative again yesterday. But youre never allowed to point out he is a drunk leftist retard.
I didn't even mention you retard.
You know what is really dumb? Making incorrect assumptions about people you've claimed to have muted.
What lies? He quoted Boehm. So, you admit Boehm is lieing?
Whatever makes you feel good about yourself.
Nice comeback. Which basically means you just admitted you made yourself look like an idiot, so you go with the old Pee Wee Herman 'I know you but what am I?' next it will be 'I'm rubber and you're glue'.
Keep the insults flowing. It impresses the trolls.
Says the person who labeled everyone he disagrees with poo throwers without any provocation. Are you really this unaware or is it all an act?
It's the booze.

You said the secret word! AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!
I laugh each time I scroll past this.
It is past noon. So guess it is time for full retard.
Your reading comprehension this morning must be inhibited by the amount you've imbibed already. If you weren't so inebriated, you'd notice that he said "I don’t know how Mikey and Sarc can defend the blatant dishonesty that paragraph entails..." As in he can't see how it can be defended, but then goes on to talk about Mike Laursen, "but I see Mikey is already doing it." He never once said you are currently defending it.
For not defending it, he still spends a lot of time giving Jeffy a reach around and calling those of us criticizing the dishonesty 'poo throwers' but he totally ain't defending it.
Because they're malignant tumors, not people.
Manipulating searches; tipping elections.
https://nypost.com/2023/05/24/how-google-manipulates-search-to-favor-liberals-and-tip-elections/
While the focus has been on Twitter and Facebook’s censorship and liberal bias, the worst Big Tech culprit of all has been getting a free pass — and now it’s coming for our children.
That’s the warning from research psychologist Dr. Robert Epstein, a Californian Democrat with a Harvard Ph.D, who has spent the last decade monitoring Google’s manipulation of newsfeeds, search results and YouTube suggestions.
Epstein’s research shows that Google has the power to change minds and move elections to suit its liberal corporate worldview.
For instance, he found that YouTube’s “Up Next” suggestions to adults for the next video to watch were biased towards liberal sources 76% of the time.
But for children and teens, initial data from the past three months shows the percentage of suggested videos on YouTube which come from liberal sources is 96%.
Out in the wilds of cyber space just 38% of video sources are liberal. The rest are conservative or centrist. But YouTube wildly skews its content in favor of the minority viewpoint.
He says the best way to stop Google is to expose what they do, so he has built a public dashboard which he hopes will go live later this year at americasdigitalshield.org, in time for the 2024 election.
Hillary Clinton’s largest donor was Google/Alphabet.
Google’s boss of almost two decades, the $25 billion man, Eric Schmidt, played a crucial role in Hillary’s campaign, as emails released by Wikileaks showed.
The IRS whistleblower is going public.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/irs-whistleblower-goes-public-accusation-doj-slow-walked-hunter-biden-investigation
IRS agent Gary Shapley, a 14-year veteran of the agency, said he immediately noticed "deviations" prosecutors were making from the normal process when he assumed oversight of "a high profile, controversial" investigation. That investigation is, in fact, the DOJ's inquiry into the president's son's finances.
"There were multiple steps that were slow-walked — were just completely not done — at the direction of the Department of Justice," Shapely told CBS News in an interview. "When I took control of this particular investigation, I immediately saw deviations from the normal process. It was way outside the norm of what I've experienced in the past."
"Each and every time, it seemed to always benefit the subject," Shapley told CBS. "It just got to that point where that switch was turned on. And I just couldn't silence my conscience anymore."
Shapely also alleges that the DOJ and IRS retaliated against him after he raised concerns about the process. He said he had a meeting with prosecutors in October 2022 that became "charged." After the meeting, he and his team were effectively pushed out of the investigation, according to a letter from Shapely's attorneys.
Get with the program, be a team player!
And I just couldn’t silence my conscience anymore.
Just to be clear, you consider yourself an exception to the rest of the IRS because you discovered a conscience, correct?

Should be bigger than Watergate, but hidden by our party-aligned media.
https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/scandal-hit-america-bigger-watergate
It is clear from the Durham report and the work of House Republican hearings that the current scandals in the Biden White House – and senior bureaucracies at the Justice Department, IRS, and elsewhere – are much deeper and more cancerous than Watergate ever was.
It may be hard to remember, but Watergate came about due to a weird, dumb, and fairly narrow set of criminal behaviors which mushroomed into 69 officials being indicted and 48 imprisoned.
Mitchell is an extremely important parallel to the current disaster, because Attorney General Merrick Garland seems to be doing a lot more obstructing of justice than Mitchell ever dreamed of doing. Garland’s Justice Department reportedly instructed the IRS to disband the unit investigating Hunter Biden’s taxes.
He has used the FBI to harass former President Donald Trump and a wide range of Republicans. And he’s turned a blind eye to every report of foreign money going to the Biden family ($3 million in one Chinese transaction, a diamond sent to Hunter Biden, millions of dollars sent by the widow of the Mayor of Moscow, etc.).
Garland’s also done nothing with the clear references to "the big guy" in various Hunter Biden emails. He’s ignored the testimony of Hunter Biden’s associates that Joe Biden was actively supporting them as vice president. The list goes on.
If Nixon’s White House was trying, unsuccessfully, to manipulate the IRS, the FBI, and the CIA, Biden’s White House has become quite good at it. These institutions are now so corrupted that their senior leadership is instinctively willing to break the law, frame the innocent, and obstruct justice in defense of their chosen leader. This includes lying to FISA courts, leaking falsehoods to the equally corrupt elite media, and isolating and punishing would-be whistle blowers.
When the tide turns, and honest people are once again openly enraged and demanding action, we are going to learn just how much corruption there is.
The New York Times and Washington Post would return their Pulitzer Prizes they received for reporting on this, if they had a shred of integrity.
Mike was arguing this is nothing like Watergate a week or two ago.
It's not.
It's infinitely worse.
Yeah, Nixon had the wherewithal to resign.
self awareness rather than wherewithal
Morals, ethics, political awareness, self-awareness, trust in advisors, moral/ethical/aware advisors... wherewithal. Whatever it took to get it done. Whatever it was, Nixon/the Nixon WH/the GOP had it, Biden/the Biden WH/the DNC didn't/doesn't.
Whether feuding with Disney, banning critical race theory in schools, or cruelly shipping undocumented migrants to Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard may as well be Gitmo as far as Boehm is concerned.
I heard the pizza was no good.
Fortunately, the residents of Martha's Vineyard were reimbursed for their hardship and sacrifice.
They are still washing down all the surfaces in town.
Well, not the residents themselves, of course, but the "good" illegals that work for them.
Ending corporate favoritism for one of the biggest companies in the world = fascism. True Libertarians (tm) like Boehm, ENB, and White Mike understand this.
"Martha’s Vineyard may as well be Gitmo as far as Boehm is concerned."
Well, to be fair, one of the residents of Martha's Vineyard compared the immigrants coming into their community to garbage. It's a hateful place.
Oh, yeah, really hateful place. They put up the asylum seekers for two nights at a local church and fed them pizza. Mean!
What a lack of imagination. The people on MV are the superrich. They could have given all of those people jobs and condos without noticing. They won’t because then the migrants would never stop showing up.
“Fed them pizza.” Jeesh, what a maroon.
Your church is so super rich the SEC fined it for trying to hide it’s assets. Your church could stop asking for tithing and for missionaries to pay their own way.
ex post fuctup
Boehm is mad because De Santis took Martha's Vineyard at their word that they're a sanctuary community and then they failed to live up to that. He exposed them for the hypocrites they are.
Just like Abbot, who literally has had to deal with millions of illegals, exposing NYC and Chicago by sending about two hundred to their cities (combined).
If the U.S. defaults on its debt payments next month
Stop buying into this narrative. Debt ceiling doesnnt equate with servicing current debts.
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) says "some progress" has been made toward reaching a deal with the White House to avoid a debt default early next month.,
jesus christ, TWICE in the same set of links. Are you stupid or something?
Yes, Boehm is stupid.
Theyve pushed it a dozen times. Payment on the debt is just over 10% of estimated monthly receipts.
And this is the "economics" guy at Reason.
Payment on the debt is first priority by law and the Constitution (that pesky 14A that Biden says mean he can raise the debt level without congressional approval, but actually states that the government has to pay debt no matter what).
What's so mendacious about it is Reason used to understand these things. They used to promote them.
But this time they are apparently pissed off the GOP House did pass a plan with cuts with democrats fighting it and encouraging constitutional fights. Veronique even criticized the spending cuts for not being big enough while ignoring the actions of the democrats.
Inflation has slowed. Is it time to worry about deflation instead?
(facepalm). The absolute state of jOuRlAsM today.
I could use a little deflation. Considering how bad inflation's been the last two years, is a bit of deflation really a bad thing?
no it's just that you have to be a complete moron to think deflation could be on the horizon.
I get that. I was pointing out that pants shitting over a little deflation, like it's the worst thing possible, is so elitist.
It'll be continued inflation on food, fuel and the everyday things you buy. It will be deflation on your property and financial accounts. Either way taxes will be going up.

100 hours of community service.

Just fucking amazing. But the idiot leftists here like sarc, jeff, and Mike will never admit we are in an unequal political form of government.
Add this to the guy in ND who ran down a kid with his car, killing him, and the prosecutor is saying they can't prosecute him for murder because the kid wasn't killed by being struck, he was killed when he was subsequently run over. The killer admitted he was politically motivated because the kid was an outspoken Republican. And the kid was on the phone with his mom while trying to run away when he was struck.

DeSantis will be out by the Florida primary.
The Florida voters want him there longer, so his ambitions will be his undoing.
The argument for DeSantis is theoretically sound, but requires complete denial of the reality we live in.
It's pure cope to look at the actions of the federal government and corporate America over the past decade and think "we just need a respectable, competent executive".
Let's assume DeSantis is genuine and what he's shown as governor. You think the globalist deep state is going to let him win, and then let him do with the federal leviathan what he's done with Florida's state government?
You think all the crimes committed against Trump and Trump supporters were just about personality?
If DeSantis is truly a threat to the system, you think the totalitarian globalists will just throw up their hands and stomp away in frustration?
Yup. Not to forbid him from running for POTUS by any means, but we don't need a POTUS DeSantis, we need 50 POTUS DeSantises serially, 50 Gov. DeSantises concurrently, or a combination of the two. POTUS Trump doesn't intrinsically jeopardize a governorship.

*clicks link, skims article*
Oh I see, it’s an article from over a year ago about a bill that was being considered by the MO state legislators (did it even pass?) wherein some random Republican said something kind of dumb.
IOW, the usual media gaslighting where they take something that a random Republican from Dogdick Nowhere said once and imply that it’s a mainstream, national level Republican Party belief – and that obviously whoever their 2024 nominee ends up being they must believe the exact same thing.
And then, instead of spending time discussing the eventual nominee’s actual ideas, we’ll be treated to half the election cycle being wasted on “when did you stop beating your wife” style questions and demands that the nominee disavow the aforementioned dumb thing said by some random Republican from Dogdick Nowhere. Funny how that never works in reverse. But the media’s totes not biased.
Yes we know.
Republicans are individuals, and if one of them says something dumb, it is not necessarily a reflection on the beliefs of everyone else.
Democrats on the other hand are a singular collective mind so if one of them (AOC) says something dumb, it represents the beliefs of everyone on The Left and we all should be gravely concerned.
Literally what Boehm does in his last paragraph retard. What you also do all the time.
But this is just your need to virtue signal what team you are on, Democrats.
so if one of them (AOC) says something dumb, it represents the beliefs of everyone on The Left
Allowing avowed socialists into your party is going to get you splattered with the shit they spew.
“Allowing avowed socialists into your party is going to get you splattered with the shit they spew.”
Allowing avowed perverts into your church is going to get you splattered with the cum they spew.
wherein some random Republican said something kind of dumb
To be clear, actually said something dumb or said something completely reasonable that’s only dumb in a superlatively more stupid narrative that exists in the speaker’s head? Asking for Elizabeth “Abortion and sex changes for adults should be completely unregulated, like breast implants.” Nolan Brown.
Yeah, that one was great. It was almost as stupid as the pro choice people saying abortions should be as easy as buying a gun. You mean require background checks. Barred if you have a criminal history? Barred if you have a restraining order, rather or not you've ever been convicted of violence? Different rules based solely on looks rather than functionality? Etc.
I've also heard Biden and Obama and other Democrats say it's harder to check out a library book than buy a gun. Or harder to buy groceries than buy a gun.
They lie. I've never had a background check to get a book from a library or to buy groceries. All they ask for at the library is evidence you live in their district, like a water bill. Groceries are even easier if you don't buy any alcohol. They just want payment.
“They just want payment.”
More white supremacist culture. Inner city black youth ain’t down wit dat.
Your use of the word "rather" instead of "whether" constantly throws me off.
Never seen it anywhere else
Oh well. Shit happens.
It's interesting.
Wondering where you picked it up
Good ol' Idaho public education, paired with being educated on the Rez. And not really giving enough of a fuck to copy edit a post.
To be clear, actually said something dumb or said something completely reasonable that’s only dumb in a superlatively more stupid narrative that exists in the speaker’s head?
A little late to respond since most people have left the thread, I'm sure, but what the hell. I meant the latter. While I'm not against consenting adults doing whatever they want to their own bodies, with informed consent, pushing transgenderism on unsuspecting kids is fucking insane.
From the linked article:
In a perfect world doctors and psychiatrists would already make sure that any permanent, life altering decisions made by their adult patients are fully informed decisions that take into account any positive as well as negative consequences before they decide on a course of treatment, so no one would feel the need to propose laws like this in the first place. And when it comes to children they wouldn't be recommending they undergo treatments that will leave them permanently altered.
But we know from many de-transitioners stories that they were not fully informed and in many cases they were lied to and told that if they changed their mind later they could go back to the way they were. That the puberty blockers and cross sex hormones have zero permanent side effects and the cosmetic surgeries are (somehow) reversible.
Why would doctors do this when they usually tell patients about every minor side effect of medication? Because we live in Clown World, where the medical and psychiatric communities have been co-opted by a secular cult, so here we are. In general I don't like using the blunt instrument of the State, especially when it comes to private medical decisions by adults, but I understand where laws like this are coming from.
The linked article may be from a year ago, but controversy in Missouri over “gender-affirming care” for adults is a current topic in the news. The attorney general tried, recently, to impose new regulations that would only allow adults to receive such care if “they had resolved all mental health issues, undergone at least 15 hours of therapy and displayed three documented years of gender dysphoria.” That first requirement was effectively a ban, since it was likely an unobtainably high bar.
The attorney general recently withdrew the new rule after it was challenged in court and the Missouri legislature passed a bill banning “gender-affirming care” for minors. If I understand correctly, it is still not signed by the governor, but expected to be.
Is the Missouri Attorney General running for president? If he isn't why would you state that is a stance of the GOP Presidential candidates? Oh guilt by association. We get it.
Note also, it is a topic in Missouri, pretty sure there are, I don't know, just spitballing it here, maybe 49 other states and this is a national not state election. Why bring it up if none of the candidates are actually pushing for this? We all know why. It's guilt by association. And you know it to, but you pretend otherwise.
The Republican primary contest is going to feature such a cacophony of terrible ideas—war with China, more immigration restrictions, banning gender transition treatments for adults, war with Mexico, more government control over the internet, etc.—that we'll probably end up fondly remembering Wednesday's mess, which denied freedom to no one except those of us professionally obligated to sit through it.
That is the direct quote. Why will something that is going on in Missouri be part of the GOP Presidential primary, or it's focus? Where is Boehm's evidence that's all the primary is going to be about? Or that the primary will even mention any of these subjects? No one said they'd declare war on China who is running. No one said they'd declare war on Mexico. No one said they want to ban gender affirming care for adults. If this gets brought up it will be because of dishonest reporting like Boehm does here, trying to paint all the GOP by the actions of one. It's fucking dishonest and biased and you know it is, but since you agree with Boehm, that Republicans are all bad, you won't admit it. You'll try this sorry level of deflection.
Also, border enforcement doesn't mean more immigration restriction. You can enforce the border while also making it easier to legally immigrate. Again, conflating illegal immigration with legal immigration is a sign of someone who is not making an honest point. Anytime you falsely conflate two or more ideas you are not being honest. Boehm is being completely dishonest in just about everything published above. I mean this is Rachel Maddow level of dishonesty today. This is Sean Hannity level.

Future leaders of America:
"At High School Debates, Debate Is No Longer Allowed
At national tournaments, judges are making their stances clear: students who argue ‘capitalism can reduce poverty’ or ‘Israel has a right to defend itself’ will lose—no questions asked."
We must have purity of thought.
These assholes have no business judging a dog show much less a debate.
Some ideas are beyond debate. The fact that they would take such a position, even though it was assigned to them, proves they deserve to lose.
Counterpoint: Their position is akin to Israel defending itself and our position deserves to lose as much as Israel has a right to defend itself.
Debate judge Shubham Gupta’s paradigm reads, “If you are discussing immigrants in a round and describe the person as ‘illegal,’ I will immediately stop the round, give you the loss with low speaks”—low speaker points—“give you a stern lecture, and then talk to your coach. . . . I will not have you making the debate space unsafe.”
Almost forgot about words being literal violence.
I will not have you making the debate space unsafe.
Seriously? I was taught that was the entire point of debate; rigorous challenge to every premise.
Hopefully the debater would then go punch that stupid motherfucker in the face.
Why does this feel like it's not an application of AI here?
FYI, I'm 100% against any government interference into AI research, but this story feels "fake" to me. Like you know, how ten minutes after a law limiting abortion takes place, the most edgiest of edge cases pops up and makes headlines around the country. This feels like a 10 yr old got raped by someone deportable and was impregnated who lived close to the border of a less restrictive state and just happened to land at an abortion clinic run by a well-known activist who gave speeches on this very subject the week before.
And to be clear, I'm not saying "This man wasn't made to walk", I'm saying he was made to walk with something that might just be a sophisticated radio transmitter-- but there's not really any AI in play here.
I agree, seems like not an application for AI.
The AI would be used to parse the data for rules prior to implantation. Although machine learning is likely more appropriate.
Most people, and especially journalists, don't understand the distinction between AI and ML. At least based on the number of times things get described as "AI" that are really "ML."
I would go so far as to fail to distinguish AI from ML and Black Swans.
1,000,000:1 odds (or worse) the implant works at any other point on the spinal column.
1,000:1 odds (or worse) it doesn’t work for different injuries at the same point.
10:1 odds (or worse) it doesn’t even work for same injury, same spot, different patient.
All of the above with the same years of unprecedented medical care and rehab confounding any strictly AI/ML clinical outcome.
Totally agree.
I thought AI was just used to make images of people with a weird amount of fingers and limbs.
You've been to that site too, huh.
I wonder what a machine that learns from the internet thinks the average size of male human genitalia must be...
Why does this feel like it’s not an application of AI here?
Because "Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot" at the bottom of the spinal cord is an *awful* generous interpretation of "thought" to be "decoded"?
To the point that if you need an adaptive neural network to translate "left foot" into "move the left foot", you've probably massively fucked something up and/or are using a hammer to fix a broken egg.
Not to be pedantic (fuck who am I kidding, of course I mean to be pedantic) but coordinating the muscles necessary to walk is a fairly complicated task, especially as it isn't just your legs and feet but also you midriff and back, plus the whole balance and sensation that is also required. Bipedal walking is a pretty difficult task.
fuck who am I kidding, of course I mean to be pedantic
My argument is conceptually quite a bit pedantic.
Bipedal walking is a pretty difficult task.
I didn't say it was easy, I said difficulty or facility isn't the metric of intelligence or thought. Cats and squirrels aren't geniuses for their ability to balance on 2-4 legs and adults having difficulty with multiplication tables are arguably retarded.
Per my comment above regarding odds. The jurinalist describes this as a "miracle" but the guy underwent several procedures and PT over the course of a decade for a partial sever. Someone regaining the ability to walk using a walker over the course of a decade and after several surgeries isn't exactly miraculous, in an objective/scientific/medical sense, even without an implant. It's the same as Ron Bailey's biomedical testing article. The guy got absolutely boutique bespoke treatment which has yet to be tested against any sort of rigorous scale of standard treatment.
What's... "Mastodon saying" about this DeSantis kerfuffle?
If I were the Republicans governor of Florida and I were running for President I’d announce at one of the many massive football stadiums in my state because I am tethered to the people of my state and they care about fun, faith and football, and I am a normal joy filled person
I can't decide whether I want to admire the fact that you're literally choosing non-blue-check randos to "feature" on your too-online article, or laugh.
The downside, as anyone who has used Twitter can tell you, is that it's not a particularly serious place.
Reason Writers: Can I put in Mastodon links?
Nick Gillespie: Do you want to keep working here?
Reason writers: *scratches 'Mastodon' links off subjects to talk about during Morning Huddle*
On the plus side, the webspace where Reason FNGs can openly tell ENB to make a sandwich and shove it sideways identifies itself.
This really is such a sloppy post from Boehm. It is the sort of shoot-from-the-hip writing that ultimately led me to throw in the towel on support for the site last year.
This entire post is Boehm trying to dunk on DeSantis while trying to appear as an impartial analyst. Boehm feigns interest in a Republican Primary that targets "serious issues" and rationalizes that the technical issues weren't really that big of a deal...But the content of his post is a bunch of unserious takes on the rollout.
A decent editor would look at the statements by Boehm, and say "Wow, you really aren't supporting your assertions here." And even if they didn't review Mourning Lynx, an editorial climate where Blue Bubble Twitterati Hot Takes get an ounce of challenge would make Boehm far, far better.
I have been saying it for some time now, but KMW is not doing a good job as editor of this magazine. If Reason is really interested in spreading the ethos of Free Markets and Free Minds, they need to come up with more than standard Democrat talking points. Because that isn't going to do anything but convince people to be Democrats.
Apparently, as long as KMW does Charles Koch's bidding, she'll have a job. It'll ultimate sink Reason, but I don't think Koch cares as long as he and his WEF buddies get their message out.
Reason is not interested in spreading the ethos of free minds and free markets.
They're interested in using deception to advance the agenda of totalitarian globalist progressivism.

Hey now, early onset* Alzheimer's is no laughing matter.
*Or is Comey old enough for just regular Alzheimer's as opposed to early onset?
Sens. Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley want to know why Special Counsel John Durham didn’t compel testimony from James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Bill Priestap, Kevin Clinesmith, former FBI attorney, Glenn Simpson.
They're all going to get away with it, aren't they.
They already have
Yes, with a smile on their faces.
They’re all going to get away with it, aren’t they.
Get away with what? There was No CrImInAl InTeNt!
Durham didn’t want to accidentally commit suicide or “get mugged” and have none of his valuables stolen.
"or cruelly shipping undocumented migrants to Martha's Vineyard"
Get that? Shipping immigrants to Martha's Vineyard is cruel for...um...reasons. Again, this is all you need to know about Boehm.
After schlepping across Mexico and sleeping in fields for a month there's nothing crueler than a warm tour bus ride to the richest sanctuary city in the world.
It was cruel for the residents of Martha's Vineyard
Dammit!
"Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!"
Notice he didn't say who it was "cruel" for. It was cruel to force all those virtue signaling champagne socialists to have to look upon dirty brown people who weren't there to mow their lawn or clean up their leaves. Hell, most of them had never seen a brown skinned man
since their grandparents bought onewithout a leaf blower in hand. They probably just assumed they came with leaf blowers and lawn mowers. To be fair, shipping immigrants to a Sanctuary political district could be construed as cruel, because you know it's the one place in the country where they're not wanted.
It's cruel to give people exactly what they want.
can someone explain who dafuq is Benjy Sarlin and why is his tweet worthy of posting?
>>thanks to an "artificial intelligence thought decoder" ... indistinguishable from magic
somebody knows whether it's science and can explain.
Boehm doesn't know. Ergo, it is unknowable.
Is it science or SCIENCE!™?
oh and long live Tina Turner. we don't need to know the way home.
Trump vs DeSantis in.... THUNDERDOME!
cave in Raiders 2 where the guy pulls people's hearts out would suffice too
Tina wasn't in Temple of Doom. I'm confused.

saw Brandon yakking yesterday he looks like he'd lose to a stiff breeze
There will be plenty of time to dissect DeSantis' record and policy aims.
Should take about 5 seconds and the work has already been done. He's a Nazi, even worse than Trump, and he intends to unleash the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse unless he's acclaimed Lord High Emperor For Life of the US. Plus, he once ate pudding with his fingers, killed tens of thousands of illegal aliens, gay and lesbian people, and pregnant pre-teens. Only a raving lunatic psychopath on meth would even consider voting for him.
Only a raving lunatic psychopath on meth would even consider voting for him.
Of course, how do you think he got elected governor of Florida? /sarc
You forgot to add that he once drank Bud Light and locked Goofy in a closet with nothing but a lighter and a jar of farts.
” he once ate pudding with his fingers”
Well, sure, but how many scoops of ice cream does he get? Are his salt and pepper shakers bigger than everyone elses? Those are the real marks of a literal-Hitler.
After urging the FL legislature to ban abortions at 6 weeks (before many pregnancies are discovered), DeSantis WILL NOT BE ELECTED POTUS in 2024 (as >60% of US voters support a women's right to abort prior to the 12th week, including >65% of voters in swing states and districts).
Trump is wise to move the center to win votes of moderates, independents and pro choice advocates (as Trump has virtually locked up the GOP nomination (as he has huge and growing leads in GOP polls in virtually every state, including Florida).
It still appears that the best GOP ticket for 2024 is Trump/DeSantis.
Even if DeSantis declines to run as Trump's VP, he'll likely get a nice appointment in Trump's next administration (and he'll be the leading GOP candidate for POTUS in 2028).
It still appears that the best GOP ticket for 2024 is Trump/DeSantis.
not allowed - President and VP can't come from the same state
Other than that pesky Constitution, which says the President and Vice President can't be citizens of the same state.
Abortion is state level now. Federal doesn't have the power.
literally the president has nothing to do with abortion restrictions now. There is no reason to ask or debate a candidate about abortion anymore.
But they will.

Can't it be both?
It's definitely both. And he's in love with Senator Hawley.
First they have to dissect every word that came out of his mouth for hidden doubleplusungood meaning.
And weed, ass sex, and Mexican hookers.
They are:
From the days of Malcolm X’s ”The House Negro and the Field Negro” speech to Black South Africans who helped the Afrikaner rulers under apartheid, we have known those in our midst who would sell out Black people for a plate of grits and salt pork. Or chicken wings. Enter the Black MAGAs.
"plate of grits and salt pork. Or chicken wings."
Or maybe watermelons or collard greens, right David Love? What a racist.
the googles say he's the Washington Bureau Chief of something I've never heard of ... Semafor
He is having a bad couple of days being unemployed again. At least that is my guess.
Sarc is a broken alcoholic.
sell out Black people for a plate of grits and salt pork. Or chicken wings.
It's weird how they always end up spouting the most horrible racist epithets when they finally lose their shit and break. Almost like they were barely holding it back...
First truthful statement he has had in months.
No mean tweets are a helluva drug.
