Brickbat: Watch Out, She's Got a Knife

Clare Nowland, 95, is in a New South Wales, Australia, hospital after Tasered by a senior constable. Nowland, who has dementia, is a nursing home resident. The constable had been called to that nursing home because Nowland had a knife. "At the time she was Tasered she was approaching police. It is fair to say at a slow pace. She had a walking frame. But she had a knife. I can't take it any further as to what was going through anyone's mind when he used the Taser," said Peter Cotter, NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner.

"Most blatant case of Failure To Respect My Authoritah I've ever seen."
I see you’ve played knifey spoony before.
lol right. "Here in America we don't tolerate that sort of crap, sir."
Australian policing vs US. The cop showed admirable courage, courage we do not expect of police in the US, in the face of mortal peril, and admirable restraint in not shooting her (or calling in SWAT to shoot her, however it is they get someone shot in Oz). Well done Australia!
She died. The cop is going to prison for murder.
Compliance or violence. That's the training.
What was going through his mind?
"Damn, I bet that aluminum walker will be a great conductor!"

I was logged in, and the comment was hit with 'you have to be logged in to comment'.
Had to log out and back in twice to actually post.
I've had that too. What apparently happens is you load the page logged in, but back at server central, some timer subsequently wakes up and marks you as logged out, of course without refreshing the page, and when you try to comment a few minutes later, the central server says nuh-uh, again without refreshing the page. If you reload the page, you'd see the logged-out status.
I don't understand the purpose of the logout timer. It's not related to how long since you last loaded a page or commented. Seems to be just some server-side timeout that kicks in without regard to any context.
Real life Granny!

Wait, this was a woman in a nursing home, supposedly with medical and health treatment professionals there. Why did they need to call the police to de-escalate the situation? Surely, if we're opting to send social workers instead of cops to check on people in a mental health crisis, we can trust social workers to intervene with a problem directly in front of them?
We may learn that the cops hopped out of the car with tasers loaded and fired within a few seconds. I would speculate that they weighed their options and decided they really didn't want to get stabbed, anymore than the people who called the police also didn't want to get stabbed, even by a 95 year old woman.
If you would seriously fear for your life in the face of a 95lb elderly woman with a serrated steak knife from the cafeteria, slowly hobbling in your direction because she'd can't stand up on her own without a walker, then you really need to join the police department. You'd fit in just fine.
Sarc, the internet hero.
At least he's not implicitly defending the cops here.
If Australian cops are anything like American cops, then you can bet that the entire department gathered around to watch the bodycam footage while the proud officer that tazed the woman said “Wait for it, wait for it… now!” as the woman’s head hit the floor with a loud crack, before everyone high fived and took bets on how long it will take for her to die from her injuries.
Edit: If you follow the original article the woman, after being tazed, landed on her head. She's currently bedridden, going in and out of consciousness, and expected to die from the injuries.
...and now she's dead. Does that tack another week of paid vacation, I mean suspension, onto the officer's punishment?
95 is the new 40 so of course you use caution and blast her until she lays lifeless before you, foaming at the mouth...
tv has led me to believe these places usually have large, gentle orderlies to handle situations such as ...
The sum total of my experience of reality thus far leads me to believe that she wasn't carrying an 8" carving knife either. *Maybe* a 5" steak knife, *probably* <3" paring knife, if not something more benign that would fit the euphemism "Australian letter opener" to a "t".
entertaining to see whether she was strong enough to actually stab me

I don't know how to feel about killing grandma until I know the vaccination statuses of everyone involved.
Also need to know the racial and gender identities. Skin color is the most important thing. Also, I assume the old lady didn't have a dog to shoot? Do the Australian cops like to shoot dogs as much as their Detroit counterparts?
Sometimes, it's almost as if a career where you get to be violent with literally anyone that doesn't submit to you, in any situation, attracts sadists and psychopaths, or something!?!
Crikey, what a hero!
Ned and Jimbo "It's coming right for us!"
So no thought of retreating as she advances?
She can’t go very fast as she is 95.
Just wait her out?
