Brickbat: Not Very Social

Under a law proposed by the British government, social media executives could face up to two years in prison if they repeatedly fail to remove content that could encourage suicide or self-harm. The bill would also force social media companies to actively search for controlling and coercive content and remove it, to counter disinformation from a foreign government, and to search encrypted messages for child sexual abuse.

Under a law proposed by the British government-
Brickbats are going to be consumed by things that start like this.
It’s funny because it’s already the law that it must be taken down in the good ol’ US of A. The difference is the UK is giving their version of the law some teeth.
No, it's not. In fact, all that content in the US would be fully protected under the First Amendment.
Good lord, if you're going to lie, at least don't be so transparent about it.

So social media platforms will not be able to have content from the Canadian health care system?
Yes, this!

Veterans Affairs Canada confirmed that an employee "inappropriately" brought up medically assisted suicide when a veteran called seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
You and Mickey are misunderstanding the UK/Canadian mindset. Lemme explain:
- X as the result of unvetted, unapproved decision making by individuals - Bad!
- X as the result of official recommendations, with all the right paperwork signed by authorities - Good!
Doesn't matter whether X is suicide or replacing some shrubbery in your front yard.
I stand corrected!
Although "X" also includes blowing upon cheap plastic flutes! (Butt only in the USA, the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave, among all of the nations upon the Earth.)
To find precise details on what NOT to do, to avoid the flute police, please see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/DONT_DO_THIS/ … This has been a pubic service, courtesy of the Church of SQRLS!
Online, Google paid $45 per hour. Nine months have passed since my close relative last had a job, but in the previous month she earned $10500 by working 8 hours a day from home. Now is the time for everyone to try this job by using this website…

remove content that could encourage suicide or self-harm
Every time I hear a member of Parliament talk, I want to kill myself.
They are always posting messages to coerce and control people.
California teachers sue for their free speeh rights against an under the radar policy.
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/california-teachers-sue-school-district-over-policy-of-hiding-childrens-gender-transition-from-parents/
“The federal lawsuit filed by attorneys from the Thomas More Society alleges that administrators at the Escondido Union School District and California State Board of Education violated the First Amendment with a policy that would compel teachers to aid in a student’s transgender “social transition.” The litigation was prompted by Escondido’s implementation of a series of new policies on the treatment of “transgender” or “gender diverse” students.”
“The policy states that “revealing a student’s transgender status to individuals who do not have a legitimate need for the information, without the student’s consent” is prohibited. Regardless of the student’s age or circumstances, the policy says “parents or caretakers” are individuals who “do not have a legitimate need for the information,” according to the lawsuit.”
caretakers” are individuals who “do not have a legitimate need for the information,”
And Newspeak births the Junior Spies.
If a kid isn't comfortable coming out to their parents, there might just be a reason. Outing is generally shitty behavior, but outing a kid to their parents is extra shitty.
Remember, it's not people committing suicide, it's social media that's killing them. Bridges, tall buildings, and garages with doors that close kill a fair number of people too, and will be banned shortly.
Um, yeah! Ass well ass ALL internal combustion engines that emit carbon monoxide!
It's talking about certain groups on social media sites which encourage suicides. People, including in the US, have been charged with murder for this. The law forces the social media sites to remove content that is already illegal in the US and UK, and merely makes it explicit.
DaveDave, thanks for your benevolent thoughts! Me personally, I have been (negatively of course) affected by suicides by people close to me. I personally think that the POSTERS and not the MEDIA need to be held accountable for such posts. Otherwise the greedy "deep pockets seeking lawyers" will go after those who did NOT posts the posts! If you look at Reason.com posts right here, there are MANY evil right-wing hate-filled pus-sacks who tell their political "enemies" to commit suicide all the time! I bet that if such laws were rigorously enforced against Reason.com, they (Reason) would take DOWN this forum, rather than go to all of the expense!
https://cutterlaw.com/social-media-lawsuits/suicide/ ... Yes, you can sue in civil court over this. I am curious... I looked (not for very long). Do you know of CRIMINAL laws concerning this? -Thanks!
Between causing suicides and casting shadows across ritzy residential neighborhoods in San Francisco, tall buildings are just plain bad! They’ve had their day and it’s time for something new. I’m thinking yurts. Yurts are the future.
I thought the whole point of Brexit was that the English didn't want to join the EU in their plunge into nuttiness, not that they didn't think the EU was nutty enough.
Then you have no idea about what happened. The Trumpian nutjobs took over.

I can well understand their desire to get out from under faceless, unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels, but I'm not sure replacing them with faceless, unelected, unacountable bureaucrats in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast is really much of an improvement.
Remember kids, Britain was where the Magna Carta was written — inspiring the US Constitution a few centuries later. Both documents being considered foundational to liberty and democracy. In other words, documents from an antiquated and savage era, promoting dangerous, uncivilized, and above all obsolete ideas that have no place in a modern technocracy where infinitely wise elites know what’s best for all.
The Illiberal Regressives wish to return to a simpler time, when rulers ruled and serfs serfed.
I can only imagine that if this passes, every social media company will block Formerly-Great Britain.
if they repeatedly fail to remove content
"You had 40 milliseconds, hence 800 opportunities. If that's not repeated failure I don't know what is!"
