House Republicans Vote Ilhan Omar to Foreign Affairs Committee Just To Kick Her Off the Next Day

Rep. Ilhan Omar | Michael Brochstein/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom

"They put her on the committee only so they could pass a resolution to vote her off." Republicans are earning lots of headlines—and goodwill from team red—for voting to kick Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar off of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. And like so much of what happens in Congress, we can file this one under Political Stunt.

It's real enough that Republicans don't want Omar on the committee. "We just do not believe when it comes to foreign affairs, especially the responsibility of that position around the world with the comments that you make, she shouldn't serve there," House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) said after yesterday's vote. McCarthy was likely referring to critical comments Omar has made about Israel.

Omar's removal may also be retaliation for Democrats removing Republicans from committees last year, though "McCarthy has denied that ousting Ms. Omar or the other Democrats was retaliation for the last Congress," notes The Wall Street Journal.

But here's the thing: Republicans actually approved Omar's inclusion on the Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Yes, one day before voting her off the committee, they voted her on to it. House Democrats on Wednesday offered a resolution electing various representatives to various committees, including Omar to be on the Foreign Affairs Committee again. The resolution was agreed to with no objection.

"Congress is just political theater," commented former Rep. Justin Amash (L–Mich.) on Twitter. "Republicans themselves approved Ilhan Omar's election to the Foreign Affairs Committee just yesterday in a unanimous consent on the House floor. In other words, they put her on the committee only so they could pass a resolution to vote her off."

Not all House GOP members were thrilled with the stunt, which has led to allegations of discrimination against Omar because she is a black, Muslim woman.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) called the vote part of "the Republican Party's…racism and incitement of violence against women of color in this body."

"Is anyone surprised that I am being targeted?" Omar said during a floor speech yesterday. "Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy or that they see me as a powerful voice that needs to be silenced?"

"Who gets to be an American? What opinions do you have to have to be counted as American? That is what this debate is about," Omar said. "There is this idea that you are suspect if you are an immigrant, or if you are from a certain part of the world, of a certain skin tone, or a Muslim."

After the vote, "House Foreign Affairs member Ken Buck, R-Colo., was overheard in an elevator calling it the 'stupidest vote in the world,'" reports Roll Call. "Fellow Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, agreed and added that all it does is make Omar a 'martyr.'"

Super Bowl censorship struck down. An Arizona judge has ruled against a Phoenix law giving the NFL and the Super Bowl Host Committee permission to veto private yard signs in parts of downtown Phoenix.

"The origin of this dispute began on October 12, 2022, when the Phoenix City Council (the "City") adopted Resolution 22073," noted Judge Bradley Astrowsky in his decision, issued yesterday:

The purpose of the resolution was to establish a Special Promotional and Civic Event area in downtown Phoenix to support events and activities related to Super Bowl LVII. This Resolution permitted the use of temporary signs that would ordinarily not be permitted in the downtown area, consistent with Phoenix Zoning Ordinance, Section 705.F.1.b. However, Resolution 22073 added to the ordinary sign approval process the requirement that all temporary signs needed to be authorized by the NFL or the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee ("Host Committee").

The owner of two properties in downtown Phoenix sued, with the help of the Goldwater Institute.

"The ordinance effectively gave for-profit companies the unrestricted power to choose what messages they were willing to allow in a large section of one of the nation's biggest cities," points out the Goldwater Institute. "That's unconstitutional for many reasons. For one thing, the government isn't allowed to give its power away to private parties—something lawyers call 'delegation.' Yet Phoenix was giving the Committee and the NFL the power to decide what signs could be posted.…For another thing, laws aren't allowed to be vague—because otherwise, people wouldn't be able to tell what they can and can't do. But the Super Bowl Censorship Ordinance contained no rules explaining what kinds of signs were permitted."

"Handing over power to an unaccountable third party is totally antithetical to the principles of limited government enshrined in Arizona's Constitution," wrote Astrowsky in yesterday's order, further noting that the law "provides no standards to guide decision-makers' discretion."

"There is no legitimate government interest in content-based regulation of signs, let alone regulation of signs based on the content preferences of private businesses that are given special privileges by the government," the judge said.

Yes, of course stimulus spending drove inflation. Stimulus spending during the COVID-19 pandemic played a "sizable role" in driving inflation to the levels we're now seeing, per a new report from the St. Louis Federal Reserve. Around the world, "excess inflation is significantly correlated to each country's own domestic stimulus and to various exposures of foreign stimulus," the report concluded. Here in the U.S., "fiscal stimulus during the pandemic contributed to an increase in inflation of about 2.6 percentage points." Reason's Eric Boehm has more on the report here.

Every single one of these congress critters has done something like this in their career...Support something in an amendment, only to vote against the bill. Vote against an item in an amendment even though they publicly support it. This happens because you can rarely vote on a very specific issue- you often have to vote on large bodies of work and decide whether a specific detail is a deal killer or not.

ENB, who is writing for a libertarian magazine that doesn't even have a horse in this race, is merely playing into exactly these optics games that she accuses the Republicans of playing.

      1. Hank Ferrous   2 years ago

I suspect 'libertarian magazine' might be more accurate since literally hitler, architect of WW3 stomped their favorite grievance grifter. It was after all, 'her turn.'

    Yes, Google is still censoring.

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/02/03/google-defender-of-the-blm-narrative/

In the debates over Big Tech censorship, the focus is usually on social-media giants like Facebook and Twitter. But the influence of search engines – particularly Google, which holds a monopoly over online search – should not be overlooked. Google has been policing the boundaries of acceptable thought for years now, both with warnings like this one and by suppressing politically inconvenient search results through its algorithms.

    1. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 years ago

So use duck duck go or others. Google doesn't have a monopoly, they do have a large share of the market because they were the best. I have an android and use duck duck go on it for about 50 percent of searches depending on what I'm looking for.

        1. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 years ago

I get that, I take issue though with the article. They claim google search is a monopoly and it is no such thing. And never once offer alternatives to Google search. Otherwise yes, I've no problem letting people know that they should be aware that every algorithm is going to have it's biases (same goes for with DDG) and that in Googles case will actively censor some idea mainly in favor of the progressive left.

          1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

To be fair, some things, like Google, have a monopoly on peoples' minds. They just can't imagine an alternative, or making any effort to change.

Hunter has friends in high and low places.

    https://nypost.com/2023/02/02/hunter-biden-begs-friends-dad-joes-employees-to-get-him-off-the-hook/

Two Delaware prosecutors whom the first son’s lawyer called upon to probe Hunter’s infamous laptop have deep ties to the Biden family — while a top DOJ official who received a similar demand is a veteran of the Obama administration and liberal think tanks, an analysis by The Post has shown.

    1. Cyto   2 years ago

This is actually a pretty revealing turn of events.

I didn't do any investigation, but I posted the article about his lawsuits and prosecution demands and stated that he would not have taken it to the Deleware prosecutors if he did not know what they were going to do with it in advance.

      These things are painfully obvious.

So we have a president taking bribes. We have some evidence that classified briefing materials were passed to foreign nationals. We have the FBI covering for Biden on the contents of the laptop and actually persecuting journalists over the contents of his daughter's diary.

We have a president's son using powerful political connections to attempt to silence and punish people who have revealed his bribery scheme. ... perhaps in response to the new development of a tiny number of mainstream journalists who have began to sift through the emails and messages on the laptop to piece together more details of the bribery scheme.

This is red meat for a libertarian. Abuse of office. Abuse of power. Using state power to silence journalists.

One would think that a libertarian publication would grab this banner and man the battlements.

But instead we get deflections that echo the propaganda in the NYT and the Atlantic.

A lawsuit against Florida's Orange County Public Schools district alleges that a mom was barred from volunteering at school after members of the school board discovered that she had an OnlyFans account.

I actually agree with this if she doesn't volunteer her OnlyFans as well.

    1. Cyto   2 years ago

I don't know what the actual details of the rules are, but I volunteer extensively with the schools here in South Florida, and they require a detailed background check.

I would imagine that any sort of sex work is disqualifying for working with kids, if not for actual evidence of a direct threat, then for the optics.

They have always been fairly tight, but post Parkland shooting and covid, they make volunteering actually fairly difficult. Even after having worked several hours per week for a decade at our elementary school, they still implemented a policy that said i had to be escorted by staff to and from the place I was volunteering. They only relaxed that this year... and that may not even be a formal policy.

So if she has a porn site, I cannot imagine a school administrator sticking his neck out to approve that. I would have let the courts handle it too. People are in a mood these days.

"Who gets to be an American? What opinions do you have to have to be counted as American? That is what this debate is about," Omar said. "There is this idea that you are suspect if you are an immigrant, or if you are from a certain part of the world, of a certain skin tone, or a Muslim."

Ever notice our Enlightened Betters™ who reject organic blood and soil nationalism in favor of the "proposition nation" manage to ignore that the entity that will define the nation will be the state?

That's right. A "proposition nation" is by definition statist, because the nation will be defined by the interests of the state, not the citizens. The state gets to define the people, not the other way around.

You’d think these press organizations would have learned from their Trump Derangement Syndrome, when they burned trust in so many institutions, including and specifically their own, trying to fight President Donald Trump. Instead, they’ve simply substituted DeSantis in their activist, bile-filled, often-totally-wrong rants.

    They're scared of him.

    1. Sandra (formerly OBL)   2 years ago

Sometimes I kick myself for giving people the smallest benefit of the doubt.

Like maybe there was 1% of my brain that briefly entertained the notion that liberals would have the self-awareness not to do the "current Republican is always worse than previous Republican" shtick yet again. You'd think they'd see how absurd that sounds after spending half a decade saying Trump was literally being controlled by Putin.

No such luck! I saw them roll out the "DeSantis is worse than Trump" messaging while Trump was still in office. 🙂

      1. damikesc   2 years ago

For them he might be. Trump's disdain for deep state mixed with far better aim at his targets and a better group around him to advise.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Yeah, unlike Trump, DeSantis has actually been in the swamp and understands how it operates; he was one of the founders of the House Freedom Caucus during the Tea Party days. More to the point, he understands how disingenuous and hostile the media really is towards Republicans, and isn't willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

He seems, for the moment, to understand just how terrified the media are of him, but he knows how to largely play that to his advantage. By the logic employed by these people, all their propaganda against him should have sunk him hard when he went up for re-election, but instead he single-handedly turned Florida from a swing state into a solid Republican one during his time in office (whether it stays that way in the medium term after he departs office is another matter). That's ultimately what scares the media about him more than anything else--that if he became President, he'd figure out a way to help the GOP cockblock a lot of the election "fortification" that the Democrats execute in the upper Midwest, and would suddenly make Presidential elections and mid-terms extremely competitive.

Not all House GOP members were thrilled with the stunt, which has led to allegations of discrimination against Omar because she is a black, Muslim woman.

Is this an allegation ENB or Reason supports? If not, why do you think it was brought to our attention?

    1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

The morning links are about listing a few current events topics Reason readers can consume with their coffee. Part of covering current events is to relay what the major party spin is on this or that topic.

Are you trying to posit that mentioning what some Democrat or Republican politician said is tantamount to endorsing whatever was said?

      1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Do you even know what "revealed preferences" are?

        1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Nope. Just looked it up, and it doesn’t speak to the question at hand.

I asked a straightforward question: “ Are you trying to posit that mentioning what some Democrat or Republican politician said is tantamount to endorsing whatever was said?”

          1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

So she mentioned that this is about racism, but she declined to share McCarthy's remarks that this is response to her repeated anti-semitic remarks. So she chose to share the idea that Republicans are targeting her for being a woman of color, but declined to share that McCarthy is concerned about the anti-semitism she's demonstrated.

Do you think this reveals a preference to a certain narrative based on sharing comments from one side but not another?

            1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Keep in mind that one version of this narrative has the Republican vote, and McCarthy, fighting against racism and bigotry. The other version of the narrative is that McCarthy and the Republican voters are racist and bigots. Do you think she's being neutral in her choices of how she's presenting this story?

              1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Quoting from ENB’s blog post above: “House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) said after yesterday’s vote. McCarthy was likely referring to critical comments Omar has made about Israel.”

              2. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Just for the record, I'm not saying she has to carry water for Republicans. I'm just wondering if she buys into this narrative that it's all about racism and bigotry since she's come down on one side of it. I think it's very possible to be critical of political stunts and to be critical of how Washington does it's business without trying to force a racial angle onto literally everything.

Clearly the point of this was to make a symbolic gesture against a member of the House who is unpopular to Republican constituents. McCarthy had made a promise over a year ago that if Republicans take the house, he's kicking her off the Foreign Affairs committee. She's extremely unliked, whether you think that's fair or unfair, among GOP voters. She also didn't mention that this is a follow-through on McCarthy's campaign promises from last year, but she did present the racist and bigoted narrative being presented. Do you think that reveals that she prefers the accusations of bigotry as a reason this happened? Or do you think she's being completely neutral on the question because she's choosing not to present those narratives and is instead presenting just the bigotry narrative?

                1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

“Do you think that reveals that she prefers the accusations of bigotry as a reason this happened? Or do you think she’s being completely neutral on the question because she’s choosing not to present those narratives and is instead presenting just the bigotry narrative?”

I’m trying to fathom first of all why sussing out ENB’s opinion on this matter is important, and why one would try so hard to puzzle out her hidden agenda based on the scant input of whom she chooses to quote in a blog post.

I don’t have an opinion. It’s not an interesting question and not worth spending my time on.

            2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Quoting from ENB's blog post above: "House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) said after yesterday's vote. McCarthy was likely referring to critical comments Omar has made about Israel."

              1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Keep in mind that she was critical of McCarthy's claim that this was retaliation. She didn't just neutrally report on it. She said this:

Omar's removal may also be retaliation for Democrats removing Republicans from committees last year, though "McCarthy has denied that ousting Ms. Omar or the other Democrats was retaliation for the last Congress," notes The Wall Street Journal.

In 2021, Bill Gates became the largest farmland owner in America. Now, we’re in the midst of skyrocketing food prices and food shortage concerns.

And what may be most notable is Bill Gates’ $55 million investment in BioNTech in 2019 — before just about anyone knew a thing about mRNA technology or COVID-19. That turned out to be a substantial payout, as that $55 million grew tenfold to over $550 million in just two years.

The science has changed AGAIN - Face masks were useless

The interesting part here is that several of the studies cited in this report is from during the 2009 swine flu pandemic, so here we have data from long ago included.

Looking at data from 12 different trials, they found that wearing medical/surgical masks did more or less nothing to stop the spread of both covid and other influenza like illnesses.

Sen. Dan Dawson, who chairs the Ways & Means Committee, has introduced a serious measure that will continue Iowa’s historic tax reform progress. Dawson’s bill calls for the individual income tax to be lowered to a flat 4 percent in 2025 and then falling to 3.9 percent in 2026. By 2027, the rate would fall to 2.95 percent and by 2028 the rate would be lowered to 2.5 percent.

The real meat is in the government response:

Fighter jets — including F-22s — were prepared to shoot the balloon down at President Biden’s direction and he was presented with options after which he proposed that the balloon be shot down, but his military leaders recommended against it out of safety concerns for civilians on the ground.

Safety concerns for civilians on the ground may be a plausible excuse, but it does nothing to explain why they didn't shoot it down over the ocean. But it continues...

“We have communicated to them the seriousness with which we take this issue,” the official said. “We have made clear we will do whatever is necessary to protect our people and our homeland.”

So the actual response was literally a strongly-worded letter. This reads like a sketch comedy script if sketch comedy was funny.

Catholic students kicked out of Air & Space museum for wearing pro-life hats

"Once in the museum, they were accosted several times and told they would be forced to leave unless they removed their pro-life hats.
The group all wore the same blue hat that simply said, “Rosary PRO-LIFE.” Other individuals in the museum were wearing hats of all kinds without issue.

The museum staff mocked the students, called them expletives, and made comments that the museum was a “neutral zone” where they could not express such statements.

When asked by the press about this incident, the museum responded as follows:
Asking visitors to remove hats and clothing is not in keeping with our policy or protocols. We provided immediate training to prevent a re-occurrence of this kind of incident, and have determine steps to ensure this does not happen again,” said Alison Wood, the museum’s deputy director of communications."

Also the Democrats resort once again to the racism, women of color argument. Yet they didn't use it when a woman of color Marjorie Taylor Green (color white) was kicked off a committee!
