Cop Orders Reporter To Leave a Park for Daring To Interview a Child
Normal human interaction should not automatically be considered creepy or criminal.

A cop who ordered a man to leave a suburban New York amusement park for talking to a child has been reprimanded by his department and ordered to attend First Amendment training.
Kicking the man—a reporter—out of the park was a "violation of department policy," Jeffrey Weiss, commanding officer of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety's Special Investigations Unit, wrote in a department review.
According to the Rockland/Westchester Journal News, David McKay Wilson—a tax columnist at the Westchester, New York, newspaper—was visiting Rye Playland for a story on the park's changing tax status. He bought a ticket to the rides and was standing in line for the locally famous dragon coaster when he struck up a conversation with the kids waiting alongside him.
One of the kids told her father about how she had just been talking with a grownup. Outraged that a man spoke to his daughter without his permission, the dad reported Wilson to a guard. That guard called the police.
When a cop arrived, Wilson told him he was there on assignment. The cop called the newspaper, which confirmed this. Then the cop kicked Wilson out of the park, anyway.
Afterward, the newspaper requested a review of the officer's conduct. To its credit, the department concluded the officer had been in the wrong. "This department is committed to high standards of professionalism," wrote Weiss. "Misconduct by its officers will not be condoned."
Normal human interaction, on the other hand, should be condoned—even encouraged. And it will sometimes involve an adult talking to a child to which he is not related. (Readers may recall that I had a school supervisor called on me last year when I stopped to watch kids playing outside at recess at my local elementary school.)
There is something deeply misguided about a society that automatically sees this sort of thing as both creepy and criminal.

Wait. Reporters are not creepy?
There really is something creepy about a tax reporter talking to a little kid.
It reminds me of Ron Swanson explaining taxes to a schoolgirl on Parks and Rec.

Reporters certainly aren't human
Nadless Nardless the Nasty NAZI is certainly NOT human! It is the lizard-like servant of the Evil One!
Is SQRLSY a reporter? He certainly isn’t human.
That's the point where I thought the story wasn't adding up. He is a tax reporter visiting the park for a story about taxes. There isn't really a reason to talk to a kid about taxes. If he was talking to the kid in a professional interviewing capacity then the parents 100% should have been involved.
I'm actually completely sympathetic to this problem that adult men around kids is automatically viewed as creepy. I get looks at the playground with my daughter and check for other kids parents when their kids want to play games with us. A guy on his own is more suspicious.
I'm not seeing enough details here and we certainly are missing the feeling of the situation. I get the feeling the reporter was legitimately coming across as creepy.
I don't see any reason to assume it was "creepy" (whatever that means). And even if it might have been perceived that way by you or the parent or anyone, so what? People are allowed to talk to other people, even children. And creepiness is almost entirely in the eye of the beholder. If he wasn't suggesting anything lewd or illegal to the child, I see zero problem here. I really hate the perception that adult men talking to strange children is somehow inappropriate or suspicious.
Always assume the worst about people and their motives… Unless they are politicians, editorialists, or commenters that clearly belong to MY Sacred Tribe!!! Tribalism Uber Alles!!! Heil Tribalism!!!
The reporter clearly fucked up here.
Had the reporter turned the interview into Drag Queen Story Hour, then her interview would have not only been allowed, but celebrated.
I was thinking the reporter should have been asking about the kid's gender identity and then lectured on why that was wrong, and berated the father for interrupting them.
Lenore, why did you find it necessary to report that the newspaper confirmed the man was on assignment? Do you think that makes a difference?
The noble journalist is beyond reproach.
It should not be necessary. It does, however, support the reporter's story about his motive, which makes it even more ridiculous for the officer to make him leave.
Is it possible that the decisive factor here is that the guy worked for the local paper?
Apparently, this is a community which still *has* a local paper - a paper which has reporters to send on assignment. On local tax stories. That kind of paper may have some influence.
If the reporter was doing a story on children who frequent the park changing their gender, that would have been perfectly fine. To ask a child about changes to the park while doing a story on tax increases in relationship to improvements to the same park, is a bit too much, don't you think? I doubt the child is mature enough to understand the different nuances that are involved in increased taxes and park improvements and how such may affect her parents' ability to continue living in such an area . She is still of that age that thinks money for things you want just magically appears.
It would be a much better human interest story if the reporter was doing a story on the maturity and deep critical thinking of a girl of age 9 or 10 who suddenly decided she was a boy.
Interviewing children about tax policy is bizarre.
I am making $92 an hour working from home. A man gets sentenced to only 180 days in jail for rapping two young girls aged 4 and 8
Our criminal justice system has failed
[Link]
180 days seems excessive for poor choices in music.
Bad enough he molested them. But rapping? THIS is why we have capital punishment. Or he could be sent to DC and forced to listen to ‘The Squad’ endlessly. Which would be capitol punishment.
This pretty much confirms why, for an adult male, it is better to walk quickly away from any child in a park or on the street who appears to be lost, crying, or hurt. Call 9-1-1 if you must, but don't be caught helping the kid or you might be accused of being the "Pervey Samaritan."
That's my policy. I don't interact with children I don't know, period. It's not worth the risk. That also means that there's no way I would help a child in distress. I'll call 911, but they're on their own until they show up. Paranoid parents, you did this.
Don’t help women either. Don’t even Ty talking to an attractive woman in public. Avert your eyes. You wouldn’t want to commit a sexual assault.
Hey, talking to kids without parental permission is the government's job.

Good. Reporters talking to kids without their parents’ permission is creepy.
It is groomer behavior. Reason not calling that out while also continuing to allow someone that posted cp on here is at a minimum horrible optics.
Was the reporter morbidly obese and gasping for air? If so it could have been Chemjeff.
It's also perfectly normal human behavior. Why shouldn't you talk to a kid you are next to in line?
"One of the kids told her father about how she had just been talking with a grownup. Outraged that a man spoke to his daughter without his permission, the dad reported Wilson to a guard."
A Democrat, no doubt.
But what were their skin colors?
This scenario could be a violation of the reporter's First Amendment rights, which protect freedom of speech and freedom of the press. However, it would depend on the specific details and circumstances of the situation, such as the location of the park (public or private property), the presence of any relevant laws or regulations, and the behavior of the cop and the reporter. If the reporter was indeed ordered to leave the park solely for interviewing a child, it could be considered an unjustified restriction on their constitutional rights.
Talking to random children sets a bad precedent from a parenting point of view. We teach children not to talk to strangers for a reason. If he wanted an interview, he should have approached the parent(s) and asked permission; then together they go to the child and he can ask whatever he wants with the parents present.
It's not a legal / constitutional issue, so much as an etiquette one. I'm not at all sorry for being concerned if a stranger is approaching my children.
We teach children not to talk to strangers for a reason.
But no reason that makes sense. It's pathological risk aversion.

In a public place, crawling with people, while standing in a line?
There is a line between caution and paranoia, and this example crosses it.
You do what you think is appropriate with your own children, but I think that is ridiculous. There is no reason for a general rule of not talking to strangers. The most interesting and socially well adjusted children I know talk to lots of people.
Most cops are perverts and rapists, so they see everyone as being like them.
Nearly right. Cops do spend a lot of their lives interacting with criminals, and that understandably leads them to have a somewhat jaundiced view of humanity.
Imagine working as a janitor in Congress. Wouldn't you have humanity pegged as a species composed of narcissistic jerks ?
‘…Normal human interaction, on the other hand, should be condoned—even encouraged…’. Yes, but a grown man alone and a tax reporter on a tax story, then getting on line with kids and then talking to the kids without parents involved is certainly not normal. The girl who told her dad probably thought his conversation was a bit creepy?
So what? If someone sees an interaction as "creepy" that's purely in their own mind. What would make something objectively creepy and why is that a problem?
As a father, step-father, and especially a foster parent for seven years, I am wondering about the status of the reporter and this author concerning their knowledge of today's world in being responsible for the well-being of children. Did the cop overreact, maybe? But the father had legitimate concerns in today's world. I also married into a family of cops, and most people do not realize or appreciate the psychological toll of dealing with the dregs of society every day. Plus, reporters today tend to be much more entitled than the ones I knew and dealt with 40 years ago. The point is that I feel this story was slanted by opinion from the beginning versus trying to report the whole picture.
"...ordered to attend First Amendment training."
I think I found the problem. He should have gotten that training in the police academy.
