A Nebraska City High School teacher and the two paraeducators who work in her classroom have been charged with child abuse after authorities said they were caught on audio and videotape abusing a special needs student. Teacher Melissa Valenta has been charged with felony child abuse, and aides Emily Kent and Deborah Stidd have been charged with misdemeanor child abuse. Officials said the three, among other things, hit the student with dodgeballs, made him sit in soiled pants, and made him mop floors and climb stairs for extended periods.

Yup. Other than the sitting in shit, this stuff has been around since I was a kid walking to school in the snow uphill both ways.

Positions of power attract people who desire to abuse power. And while teaching is a petty power role, the profession does attract those desiring petty power.

Not insulting teachers. My entire family were teachers, I taught myself for two years, many of my best friends are teachers, etc., etc. But it's like cops, priests, scoutmasters, etc. Most are good and honorable people, but the system evolves to protect a few bad eggs.

What I find puzzling in these often-reported abuses, is where are the dads? If an admin soaked my kid with dirty mop water, one of us is taking a beating. Since the person in question is 56 yo woman, I think I'd get to dish out the beating rather than take one 🙂

I do agree that these students do not belong in Gummint Skoolz, but only because I think all students need to be the Hell away from Gummint Skoolz!

To give you an idea of how schizzy and messed up Gummint Skoolz were in my time, a preteen saying four-letter words would be sent to some reform school or shot up with Ritalin, yet my Fourth Grade Teacher pressured us kids to watch Scared Straight on broadcast TV shortly before bedtime, with all of its profanities and obscenities and violent imagery!

It took a lot of philosophical and Libertarian reading as a teen for me to overcome that cognitive dissonance, rote parroting, and brainwashing, and it still takes mental exercise for me to avoid it, but I think I succeeded and I think no kid should have to undergo that 12-year-long mentally damaging ordeal.

Paraeducators Option:

Forces/Equipment Committed: If the paraeducators went in, they would send in no less than two personnel and as many as one for every 5 children under the supervision of an actual special educator regardless of the total number of children or disability. Due to the nature of their mission, they would be allotted the amount spent by your average Ranger Company and complain that they didn't have the budget of the SF Team too.

Mission Preparation: The administration and special educators would double-check and argue work experience and CE certificates until the candidate pool had been winnowed to equivocation, and then choose the ones who were the "acceptable kind of firm" with "the right kind of corrective actions".

Infiltration Technique: The team would insist on separate travel orders with Max Per Diem, and each would get to the site of the hijacking kidnapping classroom by their own means. At least one third of the team would insist on jumping in HALO.
