Study: Russian Twitter Trolls Did Not Throw the 2016 Election to Trump

There is "no evidence of a meaningful relationship" between Russia's influence campaign on Twitter and the 2016 electoral outcome.

Russia's efforts to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential election in Donald Trump's favor by influencing voters on Twitter had no discernible impact whatsoever, according to a new study by New York University's Center for Social Media and Politics.

"We find no evidence of a meaningful relationship between exposure to the Russian foreign influence campaign and changes in attitudes, polarization, or voting behavior," wrote the study's authors.

This observation is well-supported by a few key findings. Just 1 percent of Twitter users absorbed about 70 percent of the so-called Russian disinformation, meaning that a tiny fraction of overall users encountered actual Russian trolls. These users were overwhelmingly partisan Republicans; there is no reason to think that masses of gullible swing voters who might have voted for Hillary Clinton were hoodwinked by Russia and opted for Trump instead.

And this finding closely tracks previous research on the same subject. A 2019 review by Science magazine found that just 1 percent of Twitter users were exposed to 80 percent of the misinformation present, and these tended to be older, extremely partisan users—people who were already voting for Trump, in other words. Another study by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that 94 percent of Twitter users never shared this kind of content.

The NYU study also replicates a central finding of these earlier reviews of the research: namely, the amount of time, money, and effort Russia spent on influencing social media users was a drop in the bucket compared with the work being done by the Trump and Clinton campaigns themselves, as well as the attention being paid to the candidates by U.S. media outlets.

"Content from the news media and U.S. politicians dwarfed the amount of Russian influence content the electorate was exposed to during the 2016 race," The Washington Post notes on the NYU study.

The Post's Tim Starks highlighted the study's findings in a recent article. The news probably came as a surprise to many readers; unfortunately, mainstream and liberal consumers of political news have been conditioned to believe that misinformation—often of foreign and Russian origin—is the source of countless modern maladies. But time and time again, data tell a different story.

As I wrote in my 2021 book Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future, "the fact that the professional pundit class are themselves excessively active on social media probably makes them especially susceptible" to the idea that everything is Twitter's fault.

Would've been a more meaningful study (and article) say like, five years ago. The "Russians Threw The Election" stuff was always bullshit, cooked up in a lab by Marc Elias and Hillary Clinton.

This is only a partial acknowledgement of their sin. It was clear to ANYONE that wasn't a far left, hyper-partisan hack that 70k worth of Facebook ads didn't affect the 2016 election.

What's still is not acknowledged is that the FBI was spying on the Trump campaign or that the Steele Dosier was fiction created by Clinton/Obama/McCain to smear Trump. AND, there is no acknowledgement that Reason Editors took the wrong position on EVERY aspect of this situation.

The FBI spying on Trump's campaign alone should be enough to enrage true Libertarians; regardless of how you feel about his mean tweets. This is a bigger deal than Watergate and it's not even close. Where did the foremost Libertarian website/magazine land on the issue? Too local? Nothing-burger? Save our democracy?

Truly pathetic. Robby, you should all be ashamed to call yourselves Libertarians.

Clinton lost to an opponent her own party had boosted ("Pied Piper Strategy") because she was a historically terrible candidate.

RUSSIA HACKED THE ELECTION was always a pathetic excuse. And given that Clinton didn't really try for the 2020 nomination, I suspect large segments of the Democratic establishment privately understand how unpopular she is. The Russia angle is just something they feed to their dumbest supporters.

    1. Fats of Fury   2 years ago

    3. Nardz   2 years ago

Sandra seems to actively believe 80 million people legitimately voted for Joe Biden.
If only he had run in 2016, eh?

      1. Nardz   2 years ago

Because Trump added at least 20% to his popularity in 2020. I mean, if the only reason he won in 2016 was because Hillary was so bad, he solved that problem. Did enough to beat a historically popular president, beating Obama's previous record.
So Sandra is saying that she sincerely believes that Joe Biden was such an amazing candidate that he not only bested the former record holder, but bested him by so much that he was able to defeat the unexpected huge rise to the incumbent's popularity.
        This is what Sandra believes.
This is what government and media tell us.
And yet this is still what Sandra believes...

        1. Sandra (formerly OBL)   2 years ago

"So Sandra is saying that she sincerely believes that Joe Biden was such an amazing candidate"

Trump dead-enders seem incapable of having a discussion without resorting to strawmen.

I've repeatedly described Biden as a dementia patient. He's a weaker than average Democrat. But that's the point: he didn't need to be "amazing" to beat Trump. He just needed to be a little less off-putting than Clinton.

          1. Nardz   2 years ago

You still don't understand the implications of your own logic because you're blinded by your AWFL obsession with Trump.
It's not a strawman at all.
Sandra believes Trump beat Hillary because Hillary was the worst candidate ever. This is plausible.
She also believes Biden beat Trump because incumbent Trump was the second worst candidate ever.
            Right?
Both are plausible hypotheses, but only if you completely ignore the numbers and focus only on the binary result of win vs loss.
Trump's popularity increased overall and within every demographic (except the AWFLs). He went from ~63m votes to 75m+ votes. This improvement was despite the most massive, intense, advanced propaganda effort in human history being waged against him.
Such improvement is inconsistent with the belief that 2020 Trump was a worse candidate than 2016 Trump.
Sandra believes Biden won because he wasn't as bad as Trump or Hillary. But the numbers belie this position. Biden won fewer counties than Hillary, and lost more "bellwether" counties (18/19) than Hillary. Beyond that, "not as bad as Trump or Hillary" doesn't explain Biden getting the most votes ever, significantly more than Trump or the previous record holder Obama.
The dem candidate went from ~65m votes in 2016 to 81m+ votes in 2020. "Not as bad as Hillary" apparently improves performance 25%, which is believable, but also 10% better than chocolate Jesus?
Not only are you asking us to believe a result that is inconsistent with the data, you're asking us to ignore basic human psychology as reflected in both the data and broader context (such as truly unprecedented rally sizes for Trump vs extremely underwhelming shows of popular support for Biden). People are more motivated to vote "for" something than they are to vote "against" anything, yet AWFLs would have us pretend otherwise. Further, Sandra would like us to believe that the hate-vote is much, much stronger than even the enthusiasm for Obama in his first run.
Sandra's obsession with Trump's shittiness as an explanation for his loss can only be legitimate if we throw out hundreds of years of evidence regarding human behavior and completely ignore all 2020 election statistics beyond the final vote total.
            That is no strawman.

            1. WoodChipperBob   2 years ago

Not only is it a plausible hypothesis that Trump beat Clinton because she was the worst candidate ever and Biden beat Trump because Trump was the second worst candidate ever, it's a hypothesis that is borne out by all the numbers, not just the W/L column and vote totals.

The raw numbers for both Biden and Trump increased substantially from 2016 to 2020, because ~22 million more people voted in 2020 than in 2016, and third parties got about 5 million fewer votes in 2020 than in 2016. So that's ~27 million votes that were up for grabs. Biden got a lot more of those votes than Trump did, which we can see by noting Biden's 51.3% of the vote, compared to Clinton's 48.2%, and noting that Trump improved his vote share from 46.1% to 46.8%. Whose results showed a greater improvement? That would be Biden, by a substantial margin. The additional 22 million voters had nothing to do with how good or bad a candidate Trump or Biden were.

While it's true that people are more motivated to vote "for" someone rather than "against" their opponent, Democrats were highly motivated to "Vote blue no matter who" and that drove a *lot* of turnout, and Biden benefitted from the fact that he was the "no matter who". And of course, the Democrats all-out-blitz to do that also motivated Trump fans to show up to vote "for" him in increased numbers.

And if Russian influencers HAD "influenced" American voters or changed the outcome of the election, so what? The voters decide how to vote based on whatever silly ideas they prefer, whether they're Russian ideas or not. Study: Russian Twitter Trolls Did Not Throw the 2016 Election to Trump

    Spoiler Alert!

  20. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

Come on, this is clearly fake news. The real facts: people at least inclined to vote for Hillary were and are extremely sensitive people, and thus highly susceptible to even a mild hint of political persuasion. Thus, even if they never saw a Russian tweet, if their sister's neighbor's friend happened to read one, the evil influence was somehow transmitted and easily overcame their noble but feeble political desires, and made them vote for the Donald (at the same time infecting them with incurable TDS).

  21. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago

Wait, it took a 'study' to reveal this?

    Okay, fair enough.

Russia's Twitter campaign did not influence the 2016 presidential campaign in Donnie's favor BUT....... Twitter threw the 2020 campaign TO Joe by NOT retweeting the HUNTER BIDEN PENIS story from the NY Post?

Wingnuts, you're still all idiots by maintaining only the latter is true. But you can only admit the former.

And yes, I know that the NY Post story was one you wanted to "Benghazi" - meaning you wanted to repeat it in the media often enough to imply some guilt that isn't there.

But when a clearly compromised copy of a hard drive contains only some dic pics and a vague reference to a 10% bar tab you got NOTHING any credible journalist would ever print.

Less than a week ago you still pushed the Russian collusion hoax.

Hunters laptop is real. The hoax is not.

      1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   2 years ago

Russia's collusion with the Trump campaign is not the same as "Russian trolls interfered with the 2016 campaign enough to swing the election".

The Trump campaign met with Kremlin officials in the Trump Tower. That is beyond debate and no "hoax".

Trump says son's Trump Tower meeting with Russians meant to 'get information' on Clinton
“This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics — and it went nowhere,” Trump tweeted.

        NBC

        1. JesseAz   2 years ago

The entire basis of the hoax claim is based on these ads you retarded leftist fuck. That is the most the GOP report you post claims. Every other claim was dismissed by the Mueller report.

Getting information on a candidate is not even collusion. Hillary paid foreign British nationals to pay Russians for dirt.

Respecting the democratic will of the people is paramount in any democracy – including Brazil. Canada strongly condemns the violent behaviour on display there today, and we reaffirm our support for President @LulaOficial and Brazil’s democratic institutions.

The entire world has a stake in the success of Brazil’s democracy. Together, we must reject any effort to overturn or disrupt the will of the Brazilian people and affirm the peaceful transfer of power as a cornerstone of democracy.

Today’s attacks are exactly why I pushed for the Senate to pass a resolution backing free and fair elections in Brazil. This is about whether Brazil is a democracy or not. We stand with the country’s democratically elected government and condemn this authoritarian violence.

Unfortunately, the scene of political violence that took place in Brazil this weekend is one all too familiar. It serves as a reminder that democracy under attack anywhere is democracy under attack everywhere.

    1/ BIDEN CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS

Just days before the 2022 midterms AG Garland secretly ordered the FBI and US Attorney John Lausch to seize the classified records Biden retained while serving as Obama's VP left in a closet in a multitenant office building in Washington DC.

Given the Penn Biden Center didn’t even open until 2018, that would have to mean these classified documents were taken there by the current president (or one of his underlings) after he no longer had the right to possess them, right? And an out-of-office vice president certainly doesn’t have declassification powers.

And there are still readers at NYT and WaPo, and a few at Reason, who still believe Trump and the Russians stole the 2016 Presidential election from Hillary. They should be ashamed to admit they still believe it, but they aren't. Heck, they also believe Trump had nuclear secrets at Mar a Lago that he planned to sell to Putin.

while it might be nice for a reminder that republicans are not the only ones who have to pretend there was something nefarious when they lose, this was already pretty clear to those not entrenched in the tribalism.

what Russia did was never even intended to change any votes. they did not target independents or fence sitters, they went after the most fevered partisan extremists they could find.... the ones who already have hate for the other "side" who would never vote for anything but their preferred party. they targeted them..... and tried to work them up, whip them into a frenzy, and make them as angry as possible based on their already existing allegiance. they were filling the echo chambers created by social media with more fuel.

the only real question is if they added enough fuel to make any difference, or if we were already doing it enough to ourselves..... not the partisanship or how people vote or general political allegiances, but how much we let those things drive us to irrational hatred and vitriol. considering the way things have gone since they were caught, i really don't think they deserve much of the credit.

I'm pretty sure most of the issue was with Facebook and not Twitter. This is like a study showing that Tesla hasn't lead to an increase in exhaust fumes. Also, if you try to aid a bank robber and it doesn't work, you're still an accomplice. The Trump Campaign, including Manafort was giving internal polling information to Russian Intelligence officers. The only reason they would be doing that, is to look for aid from them in the election or a payment of a debt, which would be even more serious.

    1. Fetterman's Hump   2 years ago

" The Trump Campaign, including Manafort was giving internal polling information to Russian Intelligence officers."

Good grief, give it a rest. The whole "Russia, Russia, Russia" story was just a Democratic smear campaign. Congratulations, it was effective, as evidenced by people like you still trotting out the BS, and it got us a president who thinks the salvation army is secret service.

  31. Fetterman's Hump   2 years ago

Now do a study on the effect of the social media giants suppressing thoughts, opinions, and facts they didn't like (and still don't). Throw in the influence of the bureaucratic state in suppressing free speech as well.

Compare and contrast the effects of these two propaganda campaigns.
