Interview: Libertarian Former Rep. Justin Amash Is Willing to Serve as Compromise House Speaker
"We have an oligarchy right now," says Amash.

Former Rep. Justin Amash, who became the first Libertarian member of Congress when he left the GOP during his final term in office, applauded efforts by insurgent House Republicans who have refused to confirm Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) as Speaker of the House.
"This is representative government," Amash says. "For people on the left who talk about democracy all the time, this is how it's supposed to work."
In an appearance on Rising, the news show I co-host, Amash explained that everyone complaining about the spectacle of Republican dysfunction was missing the point.
"I don't understand why we always expect outcomes to happen instantly, and I see that from people in the media all the time saying 'This is an outrage, this is chaotic, etc.,'" says Amash.
McCarthy previously served as minority leader during Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's tenure. Republicans now hold the majority, but 20 members have refused to vote for McCarthy, portraying him as part of an out-of-touch GOP establishment. He has lost five votes so far: It takes a majority of all votes cast to elect a new Speaker, and Democrats remain united around their current Minority leader, New York Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
Technically, the House speaker does not need to be a member of the House. Amash has offered to serve as a one-term, compromise speaker who would concentrate on diminishing the office's power and allow more actual debate and democracy on the floor of the House.
"We have an oligarchy right now," says Amash. "It's the leaders of the parties in Congress and it's the president of the United States. Those people are deciding everything."

So dreamy
Yeah, LOL at this Teen Reason clown show.
I get paid over 190$ per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I’d be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I’ve been doing..

Well, there is no requirement that the Speaker need be a current member of the House. They could pick an outside third party to be Speaker. Somehow, I doubt Amash would be a popular choice. I've suggested (for the ever-living hell of it, just to watch people go nuts) Trump as a possible choice. Just the effect of him as Speaker on the Democrats would drive them even more batshit insane than they've ever been before. I'd laugh my ass off if that happened.
You should try to be nicer, lest your betters conclude they should stop being so magnanimous toward the right-wing losers of the American culture war.
FOAD, Artie. You never have been my better.
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I'm now creating over $35,100 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,200 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.

Google pay 200$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12000 for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it outit.. ???? AND GOOD LUCK.:)

Ask Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber how that turned out.
Fuck off and die, asshole bigot.
Arty, if we ever met in person, I guarantee you would be the one calling me ‘master’. Not the other way around.
Problem is that Trump doesn't want to do the work necessary for the Speakers position. You could leave the position open and get as much done as you would with Trump in charge.
True, but it would be amusing.

See the comment below Congress doing nothing wrong for the past two days and counting. For most of us, Congress "getting nothing done" is a feature, not a bug.
Cite?
Any independent Speaker would either have to align quickly with one party or the other, or end up being completely compromised and unable to conduct business.
The whole point of the Speaker's role is to ensure legislation gets shepherded through the House voting process. Any independent would immediately come under attack from everywhere and their authority undermined, and be kicked out in short order.
It's a nice fantasy, but if Amash really wants to get back in Congress, he should run for a seat instead of treating Congress like a fantasy football team.
Who's going to vote for him?
No Dem will, most GOP won't.
Dems won’t since he’s even worse than a R. GOPE won’t since he is from the libertarian wing of Team Red and not a warmonger or spendthrift. Populist conservatives won’t since he voted to impeach Trump. So he’s good for about 3 votes.
He's a globalist totalitarian piece of shit, whether he calls himself "libertarian" or not
Why, because he's pro-free trade or because he voted to impeach Trump for obstruction?
You mean pro selling us out to China and railroading Trump for something that didn’t happen? Yeah, those are problems. And not the only ones.
Amash is out for Amash. Not much else.
Justin Amash "selling us out to China" is what didn't happen. And Trump has been his own worst enemy and the gift that keeps on giving to Democrats. His ego railroaded itself by committing obstruction over bogus Russian collusion allegations.
Diminishing the office's power? Allowing more debate and democracy? Who the hell would want that? Crazy talk!
I want to know who he is a compromise for? The establishment didn't like him. The tea party caucus shed no tear when he left. He has basically been unemployed since losing. How is he a compromise?
He's not (a compromise), he's just trying to be relevant (albeit unsuccessfully).
I am making $92 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $16,000 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.
Everybody must try this job now by just using this website. http://Www.workstar24.com
That's the libertarian conundrum. Finding people who will seek power in order to dismantle it is difficult enough, but finding people to support them is even harder.
"This is representative government,"
Silly me. I thought the representative part was when the people voted in the Republicans, not when 10% of the Republicans decided the voters were wrong.
On the plus side, the congress has done nothing wrong for two days and counting.
Wtf? lol
The people who elected everyone who isn’t voting for McCarthy should just shut up and do what they’re told?
Soc Sec
Dep of Ed
Welfare
Gun rights
Etc
GOP is the rear guard of the democrat party catfishing people who ALLOW themselves to be played every election.
Former Rep. Justin Amash, who became the first Libertarian member of Congress when he left the GOP during his final term in office, applauded efforts by insurgent House Republicans who have refused to confirm Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) as Speaker of the House.
Has the Jan. 6th committee looked at Amash since he applauded efforts by Republican insurgents?
Amash was perfectly happy to side with the oligarchs and violate his oath of office if it meant enriching himself and punishing his enemies. That the spineless, lying snake is out of power is a good thing.
Amash was the most principled member of Congress while in office and a pro-life conservatarian. The only people who on the right who legitimately hate him are neocon interventionist establishment types, butthurt Trumpers, and people who uncritically consume butthurt Trumper media. Okay, so most of the right.
Compromise?
Capitulate, more like.
Amash or Jeffries, what's the difference? They'll both do as their leftist masters decree.
I, too, am willing to serve, modestly and moderately, ass Speaker of The Truth of the House! ON the House, even-Steven! Butt the Truth is... A house divided, can not stand! And today, we have tribalism run amok! Which mocks ALL that is good and decent!
Ass we see in these comments right here and rightist and rightest here... ALL compromisers (traitors to The Holy Cause) and peace-seekers and unifiers must be TORN DOWN and degraded, if they disagree with MY SACRED TRIBE in ANY small way!
The intelligent, well-informed, and benevolent members of tribes have ALWAYS been feared and resented by those who are made to look relatively worse (often FAR worse), as compared to the advanced ones. Especially when the advanced ones denigrate tribalism. The advanced ones DARE to openly mock “MY Tribe’s lies leading to violence against your tribe GOOD! Your tribe’s lies leading to violence against MY Tribe BAD! VERY bad!” And then that’s when the Jesus-killers, Mahatma Gandhi-killers, Martin Luther King Jr.-killers, etc., unsheath their long knives!
“Do-gooder derogation” (look it up) is a socio-biologically programmed instinct. SOME of us are ethically advanced enough to overcome it, using benevolence and free will! For details, see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/ and http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Jesus_Validated/ .
In conclusion, troglodytes, thanks for helping me to prove my points!
Then they crucified Jesus, 'cause Jesus made them look bad! ALSO because Jesus made them look bad FOR THEIR STUPID, HIDE-BOUND TRIBALISM! "The parable of the Good Samaritan" was VERY pointed, because the Samaritans were of the WRONG tribe, in the eyes of "Good Jews" of the day.
Well, we could do worse.
Too true! Butt at the VERY least, we could STOP TRYING to do worse!
I can see it now. All sides in Congress coming together in unity to say to each other, “What the hell did Speaker SQRLSY just say? You don’t know, either? Huh, I thought maybe it was just me.”
You’ve got my vote!
Thank You Kind Sir! If'n ye vote fer me... I will vote fer ye!
(Log-rolling... THIS is how it is actually DONE!)
The Security State and establishment love this idea

SPOILER ALERT
McCarthy has already lost again in Round 6 and they barely started roll call
Why does he keep doing this to himself?
He’s watched too many Rocky movies.
A big part of the problem is that most of the Republicans want McCarthy running things, but they don't have enough numbers to get him in the seat. So the chances are that he goes to Jeffries and asks him for some Dem votes to get him over the top, which is then going to result in him having to bend over and give the Dems the equivalent of the Russell Wilson trade.
We are only two days into the fight, and I think it premature to talk about an outside speaker. The problem is the Republicans have to get behind someone and there are no real options to McCarthy. Paul Ryan brought enough gravitas for the party to go to him for Speaker. Are there any in the House now with that sort of prestige? I suspect there are some but these are not the people who seek the limelight and so we don't know them.
Amash has been pitching this idea for a few months now.
We are only two days into the fight, and I think it premature to talk about an outside speaker. The problem is the Republicans have to get behind someone and there are no real options to McCarthy.
Bullshit. Any of the current GOP reps can serve as Speaker. The problem is that he's the only one who actually wants the job. So he either begs the Dems for votes, or some of these Gen-Xer politicians are going to have to put on their big kid pants, stop depending on the Boomers to run everything, and step up to the job.
Leave the job vacant. Let’s see what happens.
Ryan accepted the speakership on the terms that he gets to run things his way. His way was the Pelosi way, shut-up and vote on an omnibus bill.
Ryan supposedly gave his entire staff copies of Atlas Shrugged but when told the the author was an atheist his reply was basically "Ayn who? Never heard of her".
That's the kind of person who gets to be speaker.
The Speaker job is leadership that means taking names and kicking ass. You can't run a football team that doesn't answer to the quarterback. Same is true for the House.
Speaker Pelosi will go down as one of the great Speakers. She moved legislation through the House with a 4-seat majority. Republicans have a majority twice as large, and they cannot even elect a leader.
She moved legislation through the House with a 4-seat majority.
If by 4 you mean 11, after having had 38 the previous session. 4 is what the Republicans have right now.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw on the 20 Republicans who refuse to back Kevin McCarthy:
"We cannot let the terrorists win."
Yikes.
Yeah, Eye-Patch McCain certainly turned out to be a huge disappointment.
Honestly, after a remark like that, if I'm those 20 members, I'd be going to Jeffries and asking him whether he'd like to be Speaker. If the GOPe is going to dig in their heels to deny what are mostly extremely reasonable policy proposals from the Freedom Caucus, that's essentially an admission that they just want the same old neocon governing once they're in charge. What's the point in re-hashing 2000s-era Republicanism?
Yikes? I cannot distinguish this from any comment you make on this site.
I'm not a sitting congressman, nor am I the author of that tweet.
But I'm sorry if your delicate fucking sensibilities are offended.

I’m sorry but how can you not enjoy watching Kevin McCarthy get slapped around like this, how often does it happen that a politician who thinks they are untouchable and can get away with whatever is subjected to humiliation before millions of people

President Joe Biden said today that he spoken "at length" with Damar Hamlin’s mother and father.
Biden also said he doesn't think the NFL has become too violent. “I think working on the helmets, the concussion protocols, that makes a lot of sense. But you know, it’s dangerous.”

So many current & former players are scared of what this vax is doing to their friends & they’re not allowed to discuss it publicly
I promised him I would be his voice
But my God what is happening to us
This is horrible

Back in his day, Joe taught a young man the basics of the game and spent many an afternoon chasing him around the field at the high school. That young man’s name was Jim Brown.
True story, hero!
Joe only resigned from tutoring Mr. Brown when he won a full academic scholarship to Harvard, Yale and Princeton to attend their law schools, medical schools, and theoretical physics programs.
By the way, Jim Brown's nickname was CornPop.
I heard he also invented the Delaware Wing-T and taught it to longtime advocate Tubby Raymond.
Biden did that as well as inventing the forward pass?
And he hand painted all the Delaware helmets. Then told Michigan to use the design

Pfizer has habitually engaged in illegal and corrupt marketing practices, bribed physicians, & suppressed adverse trial results.
This is no secret, yet this fact continues to be brushed under the rug by politicians & the media.

re: "Technically, the House speaker does not need to be a member of the House."
Well, that's an interesting loophole. I agree with the comments above that Amash doesn't have a chance of getting the nod (though I would be cautiously optimistic if he did) but what an intriguing idea...
Jfc
It does open it up to a potential number of contenders, should they throw their hats into the ring.
I’ll do it.
I will accept the position of speaker of the house. I am well qualified, you can trust me on that.
Have Hump, will travel!
Herschel Walker is available.
Would be fun if only to piss off Buttplug.
What about Arnold Schwarzenegger? Everyone loves Arnold.
I actually find this rather amusing, and not very concerning.
Honestly, I don't know why people are flipping out about it. The demands are nowhere near what Nancy Pelosi had to deal with when the 'Squad' did their little insurgency.
Probably because everyone knew Nancy had that shit on lock and the Squad was just being their typical noisy selves. McCarthy's position has been precarious ever since he took it on, because he doesn't exude any confidence or agility at all, particularly in contrast to ball-busters like DeSantis or even practiced politicians like Chris Christie.
Personally, I think this "who is going to be Speaker" thing needs to be left to fester and grow and take over the whole of the House of Representatives to the point where they have to dissolve the House. No more House of Representatives, no new laws, no new taxes, etc, etc. And then can we do the same to the Senate?
F. Joe Biden would declare martial law.
Without any monies to pay anyone to enforce it, I am pretty sure that would not really matter...
The Deep State would do it from a sense of duty, and the promise of unlimited future power.
Obviously it'll never happen, but this is actually an outstanding idea.
I don't agree with Amash 100% on every issue, but he's a million times better than sorry-ass "Ukraine first, Communist China second, and America third (maybe)" McCarthy, the repulsive slimy swamp rat who has absolutely no intention whatsoever of even trying to change a single damn thing.
+
You have to be kidding.
Amash 100% endorsed the Russia hoax/coup and defended Biden's corruption with Ukraine.
He's neither less corrupt nor better than Pelosi, AOC, McConnell, McCain, or any of the rest of them.
How easy is it to trick libertarians?
Amash endorsed the Russian collusion narrative, did he?
I swear, you MAGA heads have such a tenuous relationship with the truth.
You may want to look into Amash and China.
By "look into," do you mean actually investigate, or do you mean swallow the Trumper conspiracy theories that emerged during the impeachment process claiming Amash is in bed with Communists and only opposed Trump's protectionist tariffs because he's invested in Red China?
Somebody should let Rand Paul and Thomas Massie know immediately. I'm pretty sure they're all still friends.
Ukraine first, Communist China second, and America third (maybe)
Don't forget Saudi Arabia and Israel. America fifth maybe?
Now I have to read up on who this McCarthy guy is and why the bad guys wont/don't want him, and why the good guys want/don't want him.
To avoid confusion, this Kevin McCarthy is not the one who got away from the pod people. Congressman McCarthy fell asleep and was replaced by a pod.
We Libertarians didn't fall all over ourselves welcoming him like the messiah when he made noises about the LP Presidential nomination... he knows his path to relevance in the LP is closed with the Mises Cult, so he's sniffing back around Capitol Hill. It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up some lobbyist.
Not sure why I am seeing more reason headlines that seem like they are really Onion headlines.
If we don't have a House speaker, no legislation can be passed. I'm not seeing the downside here.
Of course I would prefer Justin Amash as the House Speaker, its not very probable. My guess is that eventually Kevin McCarthy will become speaker with some concessions to get the votes.
Justin Amash would be a great choice if this was about freedom. It's not. It's about MAGA. Justin won't be nominated.
Jeffries is gonna back door his way into the job. Republicans are too stupid to govern effectively.
Yeah, that's what the holdouts are fighting for: A NeverTrump Speaker rejected by his own voters.
A much larger segment of the GOP voting population will be Never(Again)Trumpers this time around. His IDGAF megalomania went from being an asset to a major liability, and his midterm sycophants suffered the consequences.
I think you're confusing "NeverTrump" and "EhLetsFindSomebodyNew". I agree his former voters are moving on from him, I certainly have, but if 2024 hideously confronted me with a general election choice between Trump and Harris, or Bernie, or any of a dozen plausible Democratic candidates, I can't say I'd be NeverTrump. I WOULD make sure my passport was in order, though.
I can think of one or two prominent Democrats I'd vote for. Oh, wait, Gabbard already jumped ship.
I meant that in the context of the Republican primaries, where the term "NeverTrumper" originated, even if neocons and institutionalists (e.g., the Lincoln Project) took it even further to voting blue in the general.
Sure, there's the 'Let's find somebody new' crew which, for the most part, is still okay with MAGA sentiment, but is frustrated with Trump's single-minded 2020 election obsession and realize it isn't 2016 anymore. They're populistic national conservatives, but want a fresh, more disciplined figurehead such as DeSantis. They generally like Trump and what he represented. They appreciate Trump's presidency. They entertain the claim of election shenanigans. They don't want him to be nominee again---if for no other reason than because they don't think he's the strongest candidate the GOP can put forward. I associate this view with middle class Republicans.
Then, I think, there is more disenchanted segment of 'We're over this shit' conservatives that voted for Trump once or twice because he was such a thorn in the side of the establishment left, but believes he and his core supporters have completely gone off the rails, that he went from unmanageable disruptor with strong political instincts, who loves America, to unhinged chaos agent who loves only himself and would rather see the party that bent over for him go down in flames than concede an election. They look back on the last several years less fondly, wondering what they were thinking going out of their way to defend such an illiterate, reprobate asshole. This view I associate more with upper-middle class Republicans.
Lower and lower-middle class Republicans will remain as committed to Trump's present and future glory as lower and lower-middle class Democrats are to wearing cloth masks around their chins.
Leaving the party seldom endears you to the party faithful, he has less chance than McCarthy.
Kyrsten Sinema in the Senate will also find that out soon.
He resigned costing Libertarians a voice in the house, now he wants to "offer" his services. Silly grandstanding by Amash, very disappointed in him.
Go to hell, Justin.
