2022 Was the Year of Hubris
The tendency of those in power to topple or embarrass themselves by overreaching should provide a lesson to policy makers.

When Russian tanks rolled across the border into Ukraine on February 23, much of the world seemed to believe the conflict would be over quickly—that the brave Ukrainians would be crushed by the Russian war machine, one of the world's largest and most expensive militaries.
Whether Russian President Vladimir Putin shared that opinion is unclear, but there's no doubt that the invasion was a display of his own overconfidence: in his military, in the expected acquiescence of Ukraine, and in the world's willingness to let a dictator redraw the boundaries of a well-established, independent European country. It hasn't gone as planned. Instead of a quick victory, the war has turned into a churning, bloody stalemate. The U.S. estimates that Putin has lost 100,000 of his own troops while conquering relatively little new territory (to say nothing of the massive humanitarian disaster the war has unleashed).
Hubris—the arrogant pride that goeth before the fall—has been a fundamental part of the human experience since long before the ancient Greeks wove it into stories as the metaphorical Achilles heel that toppled heroes and villains alike. It's always been with us, but hubris had a real moment in 2022. Politicians insisted that government action was necessary to rein in social media platforms, but the market has largely done that on its own. This year also saw the spectacular collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto-trading-platform-turned-Ponzi-scheme, and with it the exposure of the hollowness of Bankman-Fried's "effective altruism" ideology. An anticipated "red wave" failed to materialize for Republicans in the midterm elections, the promise of "transitory" inflation was punctured on almost a monthly basis, and China was forced to ease up on its "zero COVID" strategy after lockdowns triggered protests and demands for freedom unlike anything seen there in decades.
On a moral scale, everything on that list pales in comparison to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, of course. And there's a big difference between overconfidently risking your own property and destroying what belongs to someone else.
Even so, the tendency of those in power to topple themselves (or at least lose a lot of money and support) by overreaching should provide a lesson to policy makers and the rest of us as we head into 2023 about the volatility and unpredictability of the modern world. It's not just those in power who are susceptible to hubris; it's anyone who thinks he knows what's going to happen next.
Indeed, what happened to Facebook and Twitter in 2022 should put to bed the hubristic declarations of people like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.), who has argued for government action to break up Big Tech. The market is beating her to it.
Facebook's revenue and user base are spiraling downward, and the site's parent company, Meta, announced in November that it was laying off 11,000 workers. Zuckerberg had a rough year, but Musk might have had it even worse. He lost $25 billion on January 27 after Tesla announced that it would delay delivering some vehicles due to supply chain issues. That was the fourth-steepest one-day drop in a person's wealth in the history of Bloomberg's personal wealth index. And that was well before Musk decided to go on his ego-driven Twitter misadventure, which has blown another $39 billion hole in his net worth, according to Bloomberg's numbers. Users unhappy with Musk's leadership have fled to other platforms, accelerating an existing trend of greater competition and fragmentation in social media.
Call it creative destruction. Call it voting with your virtual feet—like the ones that might someday be attached to those weird avatars in the metaverse. Either way, it should inject some much-needed humility into the debate over the future of Big Tech.
Meanwhile, Putin wasn't the only foreign leader left exposed by overconfidence this year. China's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic had been a point of national pride, and had been offered as evidence that authoritarian countries were better equipped to handle modern crises than democracies. Then, a new wave of the virus exposed the problems with China's zero COVID strategy—and protests against the resulting lockdowns forced the government to ease some of its strictest rules, including allowing people with mild cases to quarantine at home rather than in mass quarantine facilities. "Even in a historically authoritarian country, you can only keep your boot on someone's neck for so long," Reason's Emma Camp observed earlier this month.
American leaders who fret about the threat of a rising China—and who use that threat to counterproductively make America more like China—should take notice. China's zero COVID strategy has also sunk its economy and lowered expectations for the near future. "Until recently, many economists assumed China's gross domestic product measured in U.S. dollars would surpass that of the U.S. by the end of the decade," The Wall Street Journal reported in October. Now, more are wondering "if it ever will."
Politically, it seems like the year of hubris has once again demonstrated why democracy is the least-bad form of government. Democratic countries still make big mistakes of course, but it's more difficult to launch a massively destructive war or lock your own citizens inside their homes for extended periods of time when you have to occasionally gain the consent of the governed to stay in power.
China's economic issues are tied up in its authoritarian ones. Simply put, democracies seem better positioned to handle a world where everything is in constant flux because elections serve as a sort of market mechanism.
"Authoritarian systems have a tendency toward groupthink and ideological rigidity, frequently proving unwilling or unable to properly assess information and change course when existing policies prove disastrous," Vox senior correspondent Zach Beauchamp wrote earlier this month. During 2022, he wrote, "authoritarian governments that were supposed to outcompete democracy floundered, while some of the biggest democracies staved off major internal challenges."
All governments are susceptible to hubris by their very nature. But democracy, like a free market, injects humility and uncertainty into the system. Those are benefits, not flaws. That's something I can say with utter confidence.

Except that they haven't. Many of those who "fled" either never really left after making a very public exit, or came right back as Mastodon apparently sucks. Even your very own ENB can't help it; she seems to have left Mastodon for Twitter yet again. Just ask @MikeLaursen2. In addition, apparently Twitter's actual user numbers (not bots) are higher now than before.
The hubris here was by the old Twitter guard in thinking that they, and they alone should be arbiters of truth and facts.
It’s a really fun situation to watch.
I can't believe Reason either.
Then don’t.
Mastodon is the new Canada.
Mastodon is what Tofurkey is to a T-Bone steak.
I thought it was the Canadian Twitter, where Trudeau has to approve every tweet before it's posted, and will freeze your bank account if it's about him.

Does this include the hubris of ENBs tweets?
Maybe...

Reason commenters make up a very small percentage of our readership, and are largely people who hate everyone on staff and all of our work, on any subject. They’re in now way representative of “libertarian audiences” overall

Twitter just got taken over by a right-wing nut job, who called himself a “free speech absolutist”, yet I just now discovered that I am BANNED from there, for reasons TOTALLY not explained to me! This is what I sent back to them…
https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/twitter-rules … Oh, fuck it, they ATE my comment! It figures! All that I can get to is…
Your account is permanently suspended After careful review, we determined your account broke the Twitter Rules. Your account is permanently in read-only mode, which means you can’t Tweet, Retweet, or Like content. You won’t be able to create new accounts. If you think we got this wrong, you can submit an appeal.
That’s OK with me… They own their own property. But will you right-wing bastards PLEASE stop pretending that ye are in favor of "free speech"? Hypocrites, all of ye! Including Elon Mucks-it-all-up!!!
Elon says "No free speech for you, pal".
He doesn’t tolerate child porn, dipshit.
Shrike hardest hit. With Fatfuck Groomer Jeffy right behind him.
Why am I not shocked that you’d get banned. Ever look in a mirror, Sqrlsy?
My best guess is that I am banned since I try to maintain my anonymity. With utterly violence-prone assholes like Nadless Nardless the Nasty NAZI, who posts violent threats or quasi-threats here (almost, at the very least) all day every day, WHO can blame me? For trying to stay anonymous, that is.
Yet anonymity has a long and respected history! See "Silence Dogood" and Ben Franklin... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silence_Dogood ... Elon Mucks-it-all-up can KISS MY ASS!!!! Utter hypocrite that he is!
"Ever look in a mirror, Sqrlsy?" I think not, because he fears that he'd recognize himself and destroy his anonymity.
ENB = Libertarian
Insane Troll, Jesse, ML, Rmac, Naardz et al = Trump Republicans.
Cite?
Youre an admitted Soros acolyte. Your opinion has no weight.
Really now. Do you have a citation for this, TDS addled pedo?
So ENB hates us; haven't seen her here in the comment section for a while, but she no doubt reads it and then gets all butt hurt about it.
Sure we have our share of trolls hereabouts, but what I see are people just calling her out on a lot of assumptions and a lack of, what can I call it, principles? More like accommodation to the powers in place, expect for Orange Man Bad.
And the lesson they will take is.... they didn't spend enough, or act boldly enough, soon enough.
And the average "good government" voter says "We just have to elect the right people."
Good govt types do not constrain the responsibilities of citizenship to voting once every few years.
the world seemed to believe the conflict would be over quickly—that the brave Ukrainians would be crushed by the Russian war machine, one of the world's largest and most expensive militaries.
Instead, the Russian war machine was confronted by weapons of the world's actual largest and most expensive militaries.
Exactly. This article is spot-on, except for the gullible take on the Ukrainian invasion.
If they would only believe the totally-not-lies of Putin and stop using things like evidence, intelligence, analysis, and sense the world would understand how virtuous Putin and the Russians are.
I mean, decimating the civilian infrastructure of an entire country in the middle of winter isn't cruel, it's bringing the battle to the real enemy: the innocent civilians who won't stop supporting their own government in the face of the angelic, kind, and emapthetic Russians who are killing them.
If a mushroom cloud is in the future, it is the fault of those who wouldn't knuckle under to the invaders, not the invaders themselves. Russia may have to use the most terrible weapons on the planet since no one will recognize their right to do whatever they want and kill whoever they want. It's completely justified!
Problems with reading? They were referring to the fact that America has sent hundreds of billions of dollars of our equipment and munitions, which without, Ukraine would likely have had to roll over months ago. On the plus side, we are now critically short of our own stockpiles, such that training is being majorly curtailed (my son is in and has had scheduled training cancelled due to low stockpiles multiple times this year) and we have to replace it all at inflated prices.
I was responding to "except for the gullible take on the Ukrainian invasion.". Apparently I'm not the one with reading comprehension problems.
As for us providing weapons to Ukraine, the alternative would be to do nothing when an agressive, immoral, expansionist nation, led by a murderous tyrant, continues to invade other countries. How has that worked out in the past?
If you accept the idea that appeasement of violent expansionist regimes merely encourages them to do it again, having our entire buy-in measured in dollars is the best possible result.
If you reject that idea, you have a belief system that lacks logic, sense, or historical awareness.
We aren't going to run out of munitions. We aren't being endangered by selling arms to Ukraine. More than 50% of every American budget has been military spending since long before I was born. They'll be fine.
You don't know what you're talking about. Our munition supply is rated at below critical levels. We have less than 6 month supply of heavy artillery rounds, even less anti-tank rockets, SAM etc. It is estimated it will take ten years to resupply all the munitions that Biden has given to the Ukrainians. And the gullible Ukraine remark was about how it isn't our job to get involved in a war in Ukraine that has no national interest. So, you're an idiot. Also, no the DoD is not 50% of the budget. It's 50% of discretionary spending but over half the budget each year is non-discretionary. Social Security is over 50% of the budget (and growing each year) dwarfing all discretionary spending by itself. Do some fucking research before spouting off about shit you obviously don't know anything about.
We actually have less munitions stockpiled then we did in 1941. And munitions today require far more technical skills to manufacture than they did in 1941, additionally, a good portion of them require components not manufactured in the US. Fucking civilian armchair generals who never served a day in their lives acting like they're fucking Clausewitz.
“Our munition supply is rated at below critical levels.”
That depends on the assumptions made for the conflict, isn’t it? We’re still operating on a two-front-war scenario from WWII, which is ridiculous. Sustaining a two front war for 6 months with availabke stockpiles isn’t “critically low”.
“It is estimated it will take ten years to resupply all the munitions that Biden has given to the Ukrainians.”
You mean replace the second-tier weapons we are selling them? Sure, for most militaries they are top-end, but for us? Please. And ten years? Come on. If that’s the estimate, it must assume the workers are on sedatives and the machinery breaks every three days.
“And the gullible Ukraine remark was about how it isn’t our job to get involved in a war in Ukraine that has no national interest.”
Doubtful, given the narrative from the paleocons is that Putin is right to have invaded. And that assumption of national interest would be from an extreme-isolationist perspective. As I pointed out, leaders like Putin historically drag the rest of the region, if not the rest of the world, into war. Shipping weapons to allies with a vested interest in opposing such a leader/nation is in our long-term national interest, especially since it doesn’t involve any US troops. Opposing US military adventurism abroad makes sense. Assuming that we can withdraw from all world conflicts and they will never impact us is sheer idiocy.
“So, you’re an idiot.”
Demonstrably untrue.
“Also, no the DoD is not 50% of the budget. It’s 50% of discretionary spending”
Correct. And this upcoming year, that will amount to $858 billion. How will they ever manage?
“Do some fucking research before spouting off about shit you obviously don’t know anything about.”
I did. And it’s still $0.86 trillion. Mere pocket change.
“Fucking civilian armchair generals who never served a day in their lives acting like they’re fucking Clausewitz.”
Fucking veterans thinking no one but veterans should be allowed to comment on military matters. No one is talking about military strategy, where military experience makes a huge and important difference. We’re talking about resource allocation and the single biggest discretionary spending item in the federal budget for well over half a century.
Forgive me if I believe that (checks notes again) the better part of a TRILLION dollars will be sufficient to sell arms to allies fighting a vicious tyrant who invaded their country and still manage to resupply our own stockpiles. What a ridiculous belief, that (checks notes yet again) almost a TRILLION dollars could cover it.
The military crying poor and claiming they don’t have the resources necessary to defend the country is patently false. No one in their right mind looks at the massive spending of the US military and thinks, “Gee, how will they ever manage on such a shoestring budget”.
The US abandoned the two front war footing over a decade ago. So, yes you have demonstrated you're an idiot. That is 6 month supply against a near peer. Fuck, they aren't second tier weapons being sent either. They are first tier. As for veterans knowing more, it's because we fucking do, asshole. Take your the fucking L, your spouting shit about what you don't fucking understand. Over half of the DoD budget each year is personal expenses, training and post maintenance. Over a quarter is capital expenses (i.e. new ships, aircraft, tanks etc). The remaining quarter is for maintenance, replacing personal equipment, vehicle operation, munitions etc. So, when you quote that big number, remember how it's fucking divided. So, we are talking about a portion of $252 million, well less than a quarter of that amount. In addition to what we have to replace, there, the budget for munitions also must account for normal usage (in training and maintenance, plus expiration, especially of the more technical munitions). Which is less than $86 billion asshole.
Fuck, you're stupid. Oh the DoD budget is $858 billion, that's a big number. Until you realize that's divided between four branches, and above 1 million uniformed service members across all components, and must account for training, retention, recruitment, salaries (including civilians which actually is a larger portion than military wages), capital expenses, post and base maintenance, personal equipment, maintaining three academies, plus ROTC programs at hundreds of universities, benefits, vehicle maintenance, weapons maintenance, weapons storage, vehicle operations, munitions, food, uniforms, etc.
A single Ford class carrier costs $13 billion, a Virginia class sub almost a billion, an F-35 hundreds of millions, an Abrams tank around $10 million. Additionally, almost all of the munitions have come from the inventory of the Army, which is also trying to update all it's Abrams, replace the Blackhawk helicopter, replace the M-9 pistol, replace the M-16/M-4 (using a new caliber which means even more munitions costs), replace the HMMWV, replace the Bradley, update the M-109 Howitzer, update the MLRS artillery, replace the M-249, M-203, (some like the M-9 and M-203, the replacement were selected years ago but due to costs, procurement has slowed the replacement). Additionally, the Army fell well below recruitment goals and retention goals. The Army has been trying to replace much of this equipment or pay for these updates for over a decade, but due to combat operations and the over appropriation given to the Navy and Air Force (for the own updating and procuring priorities) the Army has lost much of it's edge in ground combat (Russian Artillery is either on parity or even slightly better by some estimates, and artillery is key to US ground doctrine, also artillery munitions are what we are most short of because we sent it to Ukraine).
So, no you don't know shit about what you are talking about. You are an idiot who sees the big total number but has no understanding about how that number is divided up, nor how the military support for Ukraine has fallen disproportionately on one branch, that has been getting the hindtit for updating it's cold war equipment for decades, because infantry and armor and artillery isn't sexy compared to aircraft carriers and fighter planes to politicians (and considering how many of the new Naval ships have run over, plus require huge redesigns, because they've failed to meet criteria, and let's not mention how fucked up the F-35 has been). Even in this new budget, as bloated as it is, the Navy and Air Force made out better than the Army, despite how fucked up their R&D and procurement has been the past decade, or the fact that the Army has bared the most in support of Ukraine. The Army is the largest branch, but it's budget is $178 billion of that $856 billion budget passed, but over 90% of the munitions sent to Ukraine have come from the Army's inventory. The Marine Corp has retired almost all of it's tube artillery (which is completely asinine in itself), so every single 155 mm shell, every single tube, etc has come directly from the Army's inventory. Now you're talking $86 billion out of $178 billion. So, to replace those munitions, the Army would have to spend half it's budget, and half it's budget is already spent on personal and training, which leaves zero for procurement etc. Now do you get it, idiot? We didn't send Ukraine fucking Ford class carriers, we sent them ground warfare equipment. Which is almost exclusively from the Army's inventory, which has ranked third in the budget process, despite being the largest branch by far. Fucking idiot. Also, your defense of your take on the Ukraine statement is as much bullshit as your understanding of the Defense budget. Fuck you're a simpleton.
You are arguing with people who apparently believe that Ukraine is not our problem, any more than any other humanitarian disaster around the world beyond some air drops that have negligible impact on our day to day lives. If they are not part of NATO, too bad. Maybe not even then.
Which kind of makes sense from a libertarian perspective...on one hand you are supporting an albeit imperfect democracy vs a totalitarian aggressor with in kind military support, vs. minding your own business until such time an aggressor appears at you shores [I am assuming that would render a "just" war and not some current rendition of "better red than dead"].
Military contractors are doing great, by the way.

An entire column about hubris and your comment contains the only Biden mention.
I try to spread things out.
One look at the writer's name should tell you why Biden wasn't mentioned.
OTHERS may neglect to mention the Bider-Grunch, butt not MEEE!!!
The Bider-Grunch has stolen Trumpsmas!!! Get a grip, people, and focus on the BIGLY problems around here!!! Man the battle stations, full speed ahead, and DAMN the Lizard People AND their mind-controlled vote thieves!!!
How the Bider-Grunch Stole Trumpsmas
‘Twas the night before Trumpsmas,
And all through the lands,
Patriotic feelings were stirring our glands!
The voters ALL firmly fixed to vote RED!
Vote BLUE?!? They’d rather be dead!
Visions of Eternal Redness danced in their heads!
The Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpin-Father would soon be there!
All one-party Republican states would soon be square!
While every You Down in Youville Liked Trumpsmas a lot...
But the Bider-Grunch, who lived just north of Youville, Did NOT!
The Bider-Grunch hated Trumpsmas! The whole Trumpsmas season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
Whatever the reason, His heart or his shoes,
He stood there on Trumpsmas Eve, hating the Yous,
Staring down from his cave with a sour, Grunchy frown,
At the warm lighted windows below in their town.
For he knew every You would vote Trump,
THIS, bigly, made the Grunch a real grump!.
"And they're preparing ballots!" he snarled with a sneer,
"Tomorrow is Trumpsmas! It's practically here!"
Then he growled, with his Grunch fingers nervously drumming,
"I MUST find some way to stop Trumpsmas from coming!"
For Tomorrow, he knew, all the You girls and boys,
Would wake bright and early. They'd rush for their toys!
And then! Oh, the noise! Oh, the Noise!
Noise! Noise! Noise!
That's one thing he hated! The NOISE!
NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!
Then the Yous, young and old, would sit down to a feast.
And they'd feast! And they'd feast! And they'd FEAST!
FEAST! FEAST! FEAST!
They would feast on You-pudding, and rare You-roast beast.
Which was something the Bider-Grunch couldn't stand in the least!
And THEN They'd do something He liked least of all!
Every You down in Youville, the tall and the small,
Would stand close together, with Trumpsmas bells ringing.
They'd stand hand-in-hand. And the Yous would start singing!
They'd sing! And they'd sing! And they'd SING!
SING! SING! SING!
And the more the Grunch thought of this You TrumpsmasSing,
The more the Grunch thought, "I must stop this whole thing!"
"Why, for four years I've put up with it now!"
"I MUST stop this Trumpsmas from coming! But HOW?"
Then he got an idea! An awful idea!
THE GRUNCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
"I know just what to do!" The Bider-Grunch laughed in his throat.
And he made a quick MAGA hat and a coat.
And he chuckled, and clucked, "What a great Grunchy trick!"
"With this coat and this hat, I look just like Saint Prick!"
"All I need is a Proud Boy..." The Bider-Grunch looked around.
But, since Proud Boys are scarce, there was none to be found.
Did that stop the old Grunch? No! The Grunch simply said,
"If I can't find a Proud Boy, I'll make one instead!"
So he called his cat, Chairman Meow. Then he took some red thread,
And he tied a big MAGA hat on the top of his head.
Then he loaded many bags and sacks, made ‘em all fit somehow,
On a ramshackle sleigh, and he hitched up Chairman Meow..
Then the Grunch said, "Giddap!" And the sleigh started down,
Toward the homes where the Whos Lay asnooze in their town.
All their windows were dark. Quiet snow filled the air.
All the Whos were all dreaming sweet dreams without care.
When he came to the first little house on the square.
"This is stop number one," the Grunchy fake-Trump hissed,
And he climbed to the roof, empty bags in his fist.
Then he slid down the chimney. To his fat gut, a punch.
But, if Trump could do it, then so could the Grunch.
He got stuck only once, for a moment or two.
Then he stuck his head out of the fireplace flue.
Where the little You ballots all hung in a row.
"These ballots," he grinned, "are the first things to go!"
Then he slithered and slunk, with a smile most unpleasant,
Around the whole room, and he took every vote!
This, surely, would get the You’s goat!
And he stuffed them in bags. Then the Grunch, very nimbly,
Stuffed all the bags, one by one, up the chimney!
Then he slunk to the icebox. He took the Yous' feast!
He took the You-pudding! He took the roast beast!
He cleaned out that icebox as quick as a flash.
Why, that Grunch even took their last can of You-hash!
Then he stuffed all the food up the chimney with glee.
"And NOW!" grinned the Bider-Grunch, "I will stuff up the tree!"
And the Bider-Grunch grabbed the tree, and he started to shove,
When he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove.
He turned around fast, and he saw a small You!
Little Cindy-Lou You, who was not more than two.
The Grunch had been caught by this tiny You daughter,
Who'd got out of bed for a cup of cold water.
She stared at the Grunch and said, "Lord Trump, why,”
"Why are you taking our Trumpsmas tree? WHY?"
But, you know, that old Grunch was so smart and so slick,
He thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick!
"Why, my sweet little tot," the fake Lord Trump lied,
"There's a light on this tree that won't light on one side."
"So I'm taking it home to my workshop, my dear."
"I'll fix it up there. Then I'll bring it back here."
And his fib fooled the child. Then he patted her head,
And he got her a drink and he sent her to bed.
And when CindyLou You went to bed with her cup,
He went to the chimney and stuffed the tree up!
Then the last thing he took Was the log for their fire!
Then he went up the chimney, himself, the old liar.
On their walls he left nothing but hooks and some wire.
And the one speck of food That he left in the house,
Was a crumb that was even too small for a mouse.
Then He did the same thing To the other Yous' houses
Leaving crumbs much too small For the other Yous' mouses!
It was quarter past dawn... All the Yous, still a-bed,
All the Yous, still asnooze When he packed up his sled,
Packed it up with all of their ballots… ALL of their votes!
THIS, the fake Lord Trump grumped, will get ALL of their goats!
Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mt. Crumpit,
He rode with his load to the tiptop to dump it!
"Pooh-Pooh to the Yous!" he was Grunchishly humming.
"They're finding out now that no Trumpsmas is coming!"
"They're just waking up! I know just what they'll do!"
"Their mouths will hang open a minute or two,
Then the Yous down in Youville will all cry Boo-Hoo!"
"That's a noise," grinned the Bider-Grunch, "That I simply MUST hear!"
So he paused. And the Bider-Grunch put his hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow.
But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at Youville! The Grunch popped his eyes!
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every You down in Youville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any Trump-votes at all!
He HADN'T stopped Trumpsmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grunch, with his Grunch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?"
The Grunch-light came on! “Yes! Now I know!
The Yous down in Youville, they’re really quite slow!
Their election’s been stolen, but the whole Trumpsmas glow,
Overwhelms EVERYTHING, even democracy!
They’ll lie bigly, and impose mobocracy!”
So the Bider-Grunch whipped out his cell phone,
Called the Lizard People, who send out a drone,
Mind-controlled them ALL, as is Lizard habit,
Now NO ONE could save them, not even Saint Babbitt!
So THAT’s the Sad Story of the bad Bider-Grunch,
Who stole Trumpsmas, the elections, AND your lunch!
Has the supply chain crisis impacted your supply of clonipin?
Read carefully... The below lines (from above) explain what happened, not just to ME, butt to ALL of us!!!!
So the Bider-Grunch whipped out his cell phone,
Called the Lizard People, who send out a drone,
Mind-controlled them ALL, as is Lizard habit,
Now NO ONE could save them, not even Saint Babbitt!
GTFOH.

Democratic Projection 101…
Here Boehm is blasting everything the “democratic” USA is doing and heading for while compulsively praising it’s limitless “democratic” treasonous empire.
This is what leftards do…. Endlessly.. The *REAL* USA is a *CONSTITUTIONAL* Republic not a “democracy”. Democracy is only a very *LIMITED* part of it.
That is the best government system for this nation. So stop trying to pretend a foreign form “democratic national socialism” into it’s place.
[WE] mobs RULE doesn't ensure Liberty or Justice for anyone.

“Meet the world’s youngest transgender model, Noella McMaher: 10 years old. Part of a ‘queer family’ with non-binary parents Dee and Ray McMaher, the ultra-confident little boy already considers himself a trans activist.” I think he’s being abused.

Hubris—the arrogant pride that goeth before the fall—has been a fundamental part of the human experience since long before the ancient Greeks wove it into stories as the metaphorical Achilles heel that toppled heroes and villains alike.
Nope. According to the Oxford Companion to Classical Civilisation, this interpretation is a mistranslation arising out of a contextual misunderstanding. Hubris was actually the humiliation of a social inferior for pleasure, which was regarded as a grievous sin by the Greeks, and would bring down the wrath of the gods. As no such sin exists in the (relatively) modern world, translators lacked a true context and simply got it wrong.
(A similar error is seen wrt the sin of Onan. As Christianity lacks the concept of a levirate marriage, the rationale for Onan's punishment was not correctly understood by Christian writers.)
But democracy, like a free market, injects humility and uncertainty into the system.
Exactly why Biden and the Democrats are out to destroy democracy in favor of dictatorship. We can all be certain with Biden, certain of failure.
We don't need to worry about humility with Biden either, Biden is right, and everyone else is a fascist!
It is those who are self-aware enough to recognize the human tendency to hubris that are to be thanked for the formalization of the philosophy of libertarianism: I am not smart enough to run your life, and you are not smart enough to run mine, so let's agree to leave each other alone.
"let’s agree to leave each other alone"
LIMIT Gov-Guns against other people?
But, but, but... Those 'poor' people have NEEDS! /s
The NEED to make a wealthy living out of Armed-Robbery and Corruption.
Which is why libertarianism and socialism can not co-exist. (Note that libertarianism and voluntary charity [and philanthropy] are not at all at odds.)
Lord Acton's dictum about the corrupting effect of power is typically understood in terms of moral corruption. But power also corrupts one's ability to think straight and face reality.
So, can we figure out which commenter is the one just arrested for the U of I slayings? He describes himself as a libertarian. J/K (at least partially).
Being a (small "r") republican or a (small "d") democrat doesn't mean a person can't also be criminally insane. Being a (small "l") libertarian doesn't mean a person is necessarily sane either.
It was a joke, but a couple commenters popped to my mind when it was mentioned he identifies as a libertarian (as did more than one Reason Editor).
"Authoritarian systems have a tendency toward groupthink and ideological rigidity, frequently proving unwilling or unable to properly assess information and change course when existing policies prove disastrous,"
This perfectly describes the democrats.
Funny, I was thinking it was a good description of what the Republican party is going through right now, with some people finally turning away from the MAGA madness.
The question is do they double down on a smarter, more disciplined version of Trump (DeSantis) or do they move away from using government force and legislation to coerce people into cultural conservatism (in behavior if not in belief)?
Funny; You just made the best case possible that Republicans aren't anything like the description. Heck they cannot even groupthink well let alone agree on a disastrous authoritarian system to adopt.
100% different than the Democrats.
"using government force and legislation to coerce people into cultural conservatism"
And where exactly have they done that?
Florida. And any state imposing abortion bans, of course.
Ironically; Concerning MAGA madness - Trump was Pro-Choice.
Over half of Republican voters supported Roe v Wade.
Point being; Power-Mad RINO'S make up the Anti-Choice crowd.

Musk ended the DOJ censoring news at Twitter and released the documentation proving it was happening. How does Reason see this?
And that was well before Musk decided to go on his ego-driven Twitter misadventure, which has blown another $39 billion hole in his net worth
Perhaps government gate-kept social media infotainment is central to the half-assed journalism
that dominates our political discourse now. No wonder then that Musk is current public enemy #1 to the left, and apparently left-libertarian publications as well.
Do you remember Al Capone's Vault, hosted by Heraldo Rivera? There was more significant stuff in the vault than in the Twitter Files.
My New Years Resolution this year is to create more conspiracy theories. Try this one on for size: "Fauci funded EcoHealth Alliance to contract with the Wuhan Virology Laboratory knowing that the bat coronavirus gain of function experiment would leak and cause massive damage to the economy of China as part of Trump's trade war with China." Codename "Make Trade Fair Again." Genius! [insert image of red and gold MTFA hat]
Overreaching governments are just fine, so long as they are "doing the right thing." And of course they will never misuse that power against anyone who believes this.
I believe that is, essentially, the progressive mantra.
Better Or Worse?
2022. An awful year — for the world; for this fragmenting, declining nation on fire; and for a majority of American citizens. Hope springs among them that 2023 will be a better year.
There are four cornerstones to every society; namely, government, law, education, and medical delivery. In these United States, each is crumbling.
Governmentally, 2022 bore witness to a corrupt, tyrannical state becoming even more so, especially via its administrative agencies that have no constitutional basis. Legally, to corrupt agencies of national security both international and national becoming even more so. Educationally, to a corrupt system tattering the already tattered moral fabric of the nation even more so. Medically, to Sovietization of our delivery system with nurses play-acting as physicians and televised medical delivery substituting for in-person delivery with decreased quality becoming even more so.
There is a road out as described in the semi-fictional novel, Retribution Fever. It is a road paved with Science not abstract ideology divorced from reality nor politics polluted by power-hungry persons of questionable quality. It remains a road untravelled.

Yes. That's because that's what WOULD have happened in a real war.
Russia is an enemy on the scale of China and the US. Any serious attempt to take Ukraine would have happened as fast as Russia carving off parts of it at it's leisure in the Obama admin.
The only 'overconfidence' on display here is that of the left thinking people are too stupid to notice that Russia, who previously just walked in and took sections of it's former soviet republics whenever it wanted, is suddenly unable to do so in such a ridiculous fashion.
This is a horrible political exercise being carried out over people's dead bodies.
They will all pay for this.
Why does Reason display this kind of garbage?
