After House Democrats' Midterm Defeat, Nancy Pelosi Says She'll Step Down From Congressional Leadership
The first female speaker of the House leaves behind a legacy of big government liberalism.

Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that she wouldn't try to lead the Democratic House minority in the new Congress but would retain her seat as a backbench member representing San Francisco.
"With great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress," said Pelosi during remarks on the House floor this afternoon. "For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect."
Republicans' winning of a narrow majority in this year's midterms marks the second time Pelosi has presided over the loss of Democratic control of the House of Representatives. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D–N.Y.) is widely expected to take over leadership of the incoming Democratic minority.
Pelosi became the first female House speaker in 2007, after midterm elections in 2006 saw Democrats win healthy majorities on the back of voter dissatisfaction with the Iraq War and the scandal-plagued administration of George W. Bush.
Pelosi's first speakership didn't force an end to the Iraq War but did shepherd through massive expansions of the federal government, including the Great Recession–era stimulus bill and bank bailouts, Dodd-Frank financial regulations, and Obamacare.
It was during the debate over Obamacare that Pelosi made her now-famous remark that Congress had to pass the bill "so that you can find out what's in it." The perceived high-handedness and lack of transparency over the passage of Obamacare helped fuel the 2010 Tea Party wave that ended Democrats' control of the House and with it, Pelosi's first term as speaker.
She managed to hang on as Democratic leader following that loss. The blue wave of the 2018 midterms returned Pelosi to the speakership. That second term saw her preside over two unsuccessful impeachment efforts against former President Donald Trump and trillions in COVID spending.
Pelosi skipped any direct mention of Trump in her emotional remarks today, although she did offer some coded attacks on his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
"American democracy is majestic but it is fragile…. Democracy must be forever defended from forces that wish it harm," she said, adding that during last week's midterms "people stood in the breach and repelled the assault on democracy."
Pelosi also took time to tout her successful work with Presidents Bush, Obama, and Biden, passing bills on everything from clean energy and climate change to health care and infrastructure.
Hers is a legacy of big government liberalism, and it's one Pelosi is obviously proud of.

Paul's finally free to go party without having to sneak them into the house.
Maybe not intentionally, but Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats big spending agenda has damaged the psyches of our youths, the prosperity of our future generation, and threatened our freedoms. If we had given her another two years, the damage might be irreparable, it not already. The young, and many in congress, are clueless in economics, finance, and civics, which they are supposed to know. She shouldn't have ever been given such power. Nor should any Speaker of the House in the future.

Bye, Nancy.
Now the real fight in the Democratic Party begins. My guess is the progressive/woke wing will probably win out.
The Wokes will win, get in power and find out it isn’t all fun and games , then get reabsorbed into the mainstream or get silenced. A few will actually have staying power, but it will be muted over time with just enough threat to have to move a bit to the extreme just to save face every now and again.
It was the same way with the Republicans and the Tea Party madness.
One of these days we’ll get a third party that wins enough votes to be taken seriously, but until then … oh well.
The Tea Party movement was an American fiscally conservative political movement within the Republican Party that began in 2009. Members of the movement called for lower taxes and for a reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit through decreased government spending.
OH the madness.
Yeah I never understood why the Tea Party was any more mad than Jo Jorgensen
Yeah, they said a whole lot ... but in the end you are judged by what you did. And they played hard-line and shut down the government (which isn't a bad thing) , but then folded and let th King of debt spending Trump (his words, I think) blow those limits out of the water. Trump gave deficit spending a turbo charge in spite of so called Tea Party control. They didn't stop Obamacare. None of the Tea Party darlings made much of themselves after the hype died down and the actual governing began. Ted Cruz, Michelle Bachman, Christine O’Donnell, where are they now ? Ted is around, unfortunately, but what is he doing? So what did they actually do besides make noise and disrupt the county ?
The Tea Party may have been founded on fiscal responsibility but soon enough morphed into just another right-wing white grievance group.
“….just another right wing white grievance group.”
Lol. Fucking white people and their grievances with socialists. What’s wrong with them?
Asshole.
You're an idiot. It's not just whites who are getting robbed by the tax man.

Pro Tip - Calling the Tea Party "madness" or some other derogatory term is a tell that you're a big government progressive.
Example: Reason Editors usually call the Tea Party racists or fascists or some other ists.
"the Tea Party madness."
Requesting fiscal accountability is insane.

The radical left has secured the Dem leadership.

Amen. Was kinda hoping she would join demented Joe in a dementia care facility. Just hoping this exceptional country can survive the next 2 years. Career politicians (of both parties) as Mark Twain said ..”like baby diapers need to changed frequently”..& likely for the same reason!
There's parts of SF which have been designated as open-air sanctuaries for the mentally unwell.
When everyone is being encouraged to self-medicate, there's no real need to make distinctions between the dementia "patients" or the schizophrenics or the ones with PTSD from living on the street for too long.
Yes, despite all her efforts the American democratic republic still staggers on.
“Yes, despite all her efforts the American democratic republic still staggers on.”
From my point of view, it’s been “staggering” for my entire life — seven decades worth. Such “staggering” is not, necessarily, a bad thing. It seems rather healthier than everyone being in lock-step (goose-step).
From my point of view, it’s been “staggering” for my entire life — seven decades worth.
What a coincidence! The House has been controlled by Democrats the overwhelming majority of those 70 years. For fuck's sake, from 1952 to 1994 straight. All that time we have been staggering to fiscal insolvency with brief plateaus of fiscal sanity. It took a long time for the Titanic to sink. During the next decade the legacies of the New Deal (D) and Great Society (D) will fully reveal themselves.
It's hammer time.
She's neither modern nor classical liberal. She's a crony who favors power above all else. She'd be anti-woke the minute the polls said that was the key to power.
"big government liberalism."
Britches, do you know words means.
Democrats and journalists haven't known what "liberal" really means since 1932. FDR was a progressive running against another progressive. To pretend there actually was a difference, FDR pretended to be a "liberal" instead of a "progressive", but once in office, FDR's policies were not significantly different - although FDR and his cheerleaders in the press pretended there was a big difference.
So give up already on pretending that "liberal" in US politics means anything that John Stuart Mills would recognize as "liberal" rather than socialist.
>>legacy of big government liberalism.
lol. fanboy.
As I expected a lot of trash talk about Speaker Pelosi. Her worst attribute was that she could run her caucus, something the GOP has not been able to do for years. For that Republicans can never forgive.
her worst attribute is she believes her delusions of royalty.
That's what happens when you come from a family with ties to the Mob.
she missed the lesson of every mob story ever.
"Her worst attribute was that she could run her caucus,"
Wow, I never thought M4E would go with "He got the trains to run on time," but here we are.
I fully expected it. Was not disappointed.
I like people who can do their job and I am not afraid when that person is a woman.
Jesus, all you people can do is virtue signal. You’ve got nothing else.
Yes, Nancy's staunch commitment to insider trading was quite impressive--for the children, of course.
“True, but at least she’s a woman!” -M4E.
I would not term Nancy Pelosi to be a liberal. I find her to be more dangerous than Trump. Self-centered power mongers like Pelosi and Trump have no place in legitimate political parties. Pelosi's racist anti-white Identity Politics, where she actually threatens to replace whites as soon as the minorities are a majority of the voters is wacko, is delusional, but the paranoid Alt Right takes her at her word. Her decades of Identity Politics have polarized the nation along race lines.

“American democracy is majestic but it is fragile…. Democracy must be forever defended from forces that wish it harm,” she said, adding that during last week’s midterms “people stood in the breach and repelled the assault on democracy.”
That was not a coded attack on Trump’s [perceived] actions in 2020. This is the Democrats’ singular, and well-coordinated mantra going forward. Opposition to Democrats or their policies isn’t opposition to Democrats or their policies, it’s an assault on Democracy. If you haven’t figured that out, turn in your journolisming card, decoder ring and whistle.
And Americans are stupid enough to think we live in a Democracy. Well done communists in the education system.
great news. now that she has time she won't have to make paul sub out the ass play to late night hobo underpants party rentboys. she can peg her old man herself.
This kerfuffle with her husband may be another reason she's stepping down. Who knows what's about to break?
Reason seems extremely apprehensive to criticize her.
The amount of time the article takes to focus on Trump is revealing. If the article of a long-serving member of the House losing the leadership position after a few terms as both majority and minority leader then maybe focus on what laws she pushed and how she controlled her party. If the writer actually was libertarian, then the article would be full of criticisms of her leadership and the thought of dragging Trump into it wouldn't make sense.
Reason, somewhat refreshingly, actually reports the news more often than just doing negative article hit pieces, the public has been brainwashed into accepting as the news. There is negativity here however, if you were a libertarian. The phrase "Hers is a legacy of big government liberalism, and it's one Pelosi is obviously proud of." Is a pretty big negative criticism. But only from a libertarian point of view.
"American democracy is majestic but it is fragile…. Democracy must be forever defended from forces that wish it harm"
Is that why her party supported Maga candidates with major money this election year? Cause MAGAs are so scary and a dangerous to democracy?
Good riddance. She was a divisive speaker who ruined the House. She and her positions should be the platinum standard of how NOT to be a Speaker or Politician. Too bad she didn't resign from the house. She needs to go. A worthless politician who herded the Dems like lemmings. No loss to her leaving.
