Neither Republicans nor Democrats have a clear advantage as we head into Election Day tomorrow. Polls show the two major parties nearly tied when it comes to potential votes.

One of the latest polls comes from NBC, which found that among registered voters 47 percent said they prefer a Democrat-controlled Congress and 47 percent would like to see Republicans in control. Among those who described themselves as likely to vote, 48 percent supported Democrats and 47 percent supported Republicans, a difference that falls within the poll's margin of error. And Democrats—who had been lagging on interest in the midterm elections—have now caught up to the enthusiasm of their GOP counterparts, NBC found. Seventy-three percent of each now rate their interest as a "9" or "10" on a 10-point scale.

But behind these numbers, some potentially bad news for Democrats still lurks:

Only 44% of voters approve of President Biden's job performance, while 53% disapprove; more than 70% think the country is headed in the wrong direction; and a combined 81% say they are "very" or "somewhat" dissatisfied with the U.S. economy.

Figures like these make it less likely that Democrats will be able to retain control of either the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate.

In the Senate—now split 50–50—gaining at least one more seat will give either side the majority. There are 35 Senate seats up for grabs, with 12 of these currently held by Democrats and 23 currently held by Republicans. "Though Republicans are defending more seats overall, only five are rated competitively by the Cook Political Report," notes Bloomberg Government. "Democrats are defending four seats rated competitively."

Republicans need to gain just five seats to take control of the House—and some analysts predict that they will do this easily. "The atmosphere is so murky that some Democratic strategists privately acknowledge that a loss of 20 seats would be a good night," The Washington Post reports.

Another broad poll released yesterday—this one from The Washington Post and ABC—also found a relatively even split between support for Republicans and Democrats. Among registered voters, 49 percent said they would vote for the Republican candidate in their congressional district and 48 percent for the Democratic candidate. And among likely voters, the split was 50 percent Republican and 48 percent Democrat. But Republican voters were significantly more likely to say it was certain that they would vote and to say they had been paying close attention to the election.

If you want to get more into the nitty gritty of polling on competitive races, FiveThirtyEight has you covered.

Politico also offers a thorough breakdown, focusing on the states likely to determine who control the Senate. "The midterms are coming to a close with a significant divide between some of the independent polling—especially surveys conducted using traditional telephone methodology, which has struggled to capture Republican support in recent elections—and polls released by GOP-affiliated firms, with their obvious self-interest," it notes.

The 10 most competitive Senate races include:

Arizona: Sen. Mark Kelly (D) vs. Blake Masters (R)
Colorado: Michael Bennet (D) vs. Joe O'Dea (R)
Georgia: Raphael Warnock (D) vs. Herschel Walker (R)
Nevada: Catherine Cortez Mastro (D) vs. Adam Laxalt (R)
New Hampshire: Maggie Hassan (D) vs. Don Bolduc (R)
North Carolina: Cheri Beasley (D) vs. Ted Budd (R)
Ohio: Tim Ryan (D) vs. J.D. Vance (R)
Pennsylvania: John Fetterman (D) vs. Mehmet Oz (R)
Washington: Patty Murray (D) vs. Tiffany Smiley (R)
Wisconsin: Mandela Barnes (D) vs. Ron Johnson (R)

In the House, the 35 races deemed most competitive by The Cook Political Report include contests in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

FREE MINDS

The University of Chicago canceled a class called "The Problem of Whiteness" after conservative students and activists complained. Conservatives of late have imagined themselves the defenders of academic freedom. But as recent right-wing enthusiasm for book bans, laws limiting how teachers talk about subjects like race and gender, and campaigns like this show, much of the right is still plenty happy to limit academic freedom when it challenges their worldview.

Looks like @UChicago caved to the censors. What a disappointment. You don't violate academic freedom just because some jackbooted Twitter thug throws a tantrum. https://t.co/vLJbxLIEWc

FREE MARKETS

Twitter's snowflake-in-chief. After promising to make Twitter more friendly to free speech and comedy and pledging to do away with permanent suspensions, new Twitter head Elon Musk changed his tune when faced with people poking fun at him. In response to some comedians impersonating him in a mocking—but clearly not-actually-him—way on Twitter, Musk declared yesterday: "Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying 'parody' will be permanently suspended."

pic.twitter.com/7LSoUNuh6I

— Katie Herzog (@kittypurrzog) November 7, 2022

Musk has also pushed back the rollout date for converting Twitter verification to a paid subscription plan. And after Twitter fired roughly half of its employees last Friday, the company is now reportedly asking some fired workers to come back. Meanwhile, many big companies are suspending Twitter ad buys. Musk's tenure as Twitter boss is—to put it mildly—not off to an excellent start.

QUICK HITS

• "Scores of pre-election lawsuits have been filed in battleground states ahead of Tuesday's election," reports CNN. "Much of the current litigation focuses on the processes surrounding how votes are cast and counted—with some lawsuits seizing on the same debunked conspiracy theories about election fraud that propelled the court efforts to overturn the 2020 election."

• Another win for Tofurky (and the First Amendment, and common sense).

 • Democrats' long goodbye to the working class.

• Facebook's parent company, Meta, is reportedly planning a huge round of layoffs.

• British researchers are testing lab-grown blood.

The incumbent party is always at a disadvantage in the mid-terms. Who has the advantage varies by state, but independents decide elections and they are not happy with Joe.
This is just Reason cheer-leading for the Democrats while trying to appear to not be doing that.

This Poll is completely useless for reporting on the horse race over the Senate and Congress.

Right, wrong or indifferent, senators are weighted with different populations. 2 senators represent Wyoming. 2 Senators represent New York. The popular poll from those two states would indicate a strong preference for a Dem Senate, but the result would be a split between the two.

Likewise, the fate of congress isn't up to a popular poll, it comes down to those few competitive congressional seats that could flip.

I cannot understand what possessed ENB to post this "Analysis". It is not germane. It is inapt. Citing this data would make all of her readers LESS INFORMED about the election, if people gave it any credence. Luckily, her reporting is increasingly seen as the stories that blue-checks tell each day over coffee to make themselves feel better.

Some reason writers are just liars; Welch, Shackford, and DeRugy come to mind. Some are just nuts like Sudderman. Brown, however, just seems really stupid.

        1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   3 years ago

I agree that ENB is really stupid, but she's also a liar.

              1. Zeb   3 years ago

It's part of the definition of lying. Has to be a deliberate statement of something the speaker knows not to be true.

      4. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

But don't you know that the Senate is racist? New York should get like 20 Senators, and Wyoming only one--contingent on approval from New York.

        1. CE   3 years ago

Yeah, the Dems see the Senate as a threat to democracy. Especially with rules like needing more than 46 votes out of 100 to pass their whole legislative program.

      5. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

This is a pretty hastily thrown together morning report.

        1. Utkonos   3 years ago

And they had all Sunday off. We deserve some meaty analysis after subsisting all weekend on Tofurkey!!

    5. Spiritus Mundi   3 years ago

Expect more middle of the night ballot dumps that push dems over the top. Obama, Biden, and company have been out there banging on about threats to democracy to get ahead of the criticism. And if bring it up here, ENB will do her part to toe the party line:
with some lawsuits seizing on the same debunked conspiracy theories about election fraud that propelled the court efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

      1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   3 years ago (edited)

I assumed that was to justify the violence that is scheduled to begin on November 9.

        1. CE   3 years ago

no, it is to discredit anyone who questions the results too loudly

      2. Nelson   3 years ago

Ballot dumps. For fuck's sake, Fergus. You still can't accept that every reported accusation of widespread fraud (like that one) was investigated and none were found to be vaild. Not a single one.

I know, I know. Your gut and instincts tell you otherwise. But when you have one narrative that has zero evidence and every accusation of widespread fraud has been baseless, your instincts are obviously wrong.

Trump lost. Build a bridge and get over it.

        1. Spiritus Mundi   3 years ago

Not a single ballot dump was denied. They were just dismissed as a large bunch of ballots from overwelmingly dem areas. After 80% of the vote counted there is no believable way there was a batch of ballots that spike the dem candidate then the slope of change goes right back to what it was the before the ballot dump. But you believe what you want.

          1. Ted AKA Teddy Salad, CIA/US Ballet Force   3 years ago

The delusion is strong in that one.

        2. Quo Usque Tandem   3 years ago

So you're going to stand by the results, no matter the outcome, right?

          Right?

        3. JesseAz   3 years ago

Well this is an easily provable lie as theybhave convictions for 2020 voter fraud. Likewise tbey have instances of known double voting they refused to prosecute.

        4. B G   3 years ago

Not to say that the fraud claims are proven, but the claim that "every accusation was investigates and found invalid" isn't exactly true. Generally, that claim is based on the outcome of the court cases which were filed, but a majority of those cases were thrown out on the basis that the groups bringing the cases lacked standing to bring the suits in the first place, or had brought the suits too late to be valid; the latter is probably a major driver for a lot of the cases which have been brought to court before election day this year.

People and media outlets looking for a reason to dismiss all of the claims (or at least the ones not coming from Stacey Abrams) took the dismissed cases as instances where the "evidence was examined and found insufficient", but in reality those cases represent instances where whatever evidence there might have been wasn't really examined to a level which supports a conclusion one way or the other. Determination of "standing" in a legal proceeding gets sorted out before the evidence is introduced.

If I were to sue Jussie Smolett for fraud over his "maga country" hate crime hoax, the case would get thrown out of court immediately, because I can't prove that what he did harmed (or really effected) me in any way. That doesn't mean he was telling the truth about the attack though.

          1. R Mac   3 years ago

This has already been explained repeatedly to the lying lefties like Nelson here. He will continue to ignore it and make the same claims again in the future.

      3. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

So, legally documented 110% turnout does NOT indicate fraud, right?

        1. B G   3 years ago

          Depends.

Among Chicago graveyards, 110% turnout is considered low.

        1. Minadin   3 years ago

I was doing a measure-up at a hotel the morning after, and the hotel manager was glued to the TV in every room type we visited.

Not because she was particularly political, she had just never seen every person on the news lose their collective minds all together at once like that before.

        2. perlmonger   3 years ago

2016 was weird. My co-workers were really broken up over it. First time I'd ever been in a notably different stage of grief than everyone else. All those people found out just that morning that they were going to hate the President. I'd known for months that I was going to be sad about whoever won.

Nobody seemed to appreciate the humor of my acting like I was really surprised Gary Johnson hadn't won.

        1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

So, parody accounts have to label themselves a parody now? Or is it just parodies of specific products?

          1. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

I don't know. It was just a vague tweet by Musk. Not sure if it means the user's handle has to have the word "parody" or their bio has to have the word "parody" or ???

What ultimately matters is what it says in the license agreement and the site rules. Even Elon Musk tacitly acknowledged that; he followed up with a tweet where he directed everyone to the rules.

The Twitter drama has certainly produced an ocean's worth of milk from the elite lolcows and various journoscum. Let's recap ENB's limited context posting here:

-Musk buys Twitter and promises to revamp it into something that isn't just some social media safe space for the Left.
--Says that Twitter can't survive solely on ad revenue and announces that he'll turn the internet sticker into a subscription service. Initially, this was $20 until Stephen King screeched at him, so he dropped it to $8 ("I know you're a prostitute, we're just negotiating the price").
--AOC does her typical middle school burn book stupidity, finds that her account is wonky and blames Tesla Man Bad despite the fact it was a site glitch that was affecting multiple users (a fact that of course was little reported by journoscum).
-Journoscum and other Hollywood malbushim migrate over to the Fediverse at Mastodon, only to be surprised to walk into an poasting environment that's more like the glory days of mid-2000s era internet.
-Rumors emerge that Twitter employees were running a black market for blue checks that went as high as $15,000--which sheds light on why some of the Blue Check Brigade is having a fit about the subscription plan--leading to additional speculation that people also paid under the table to get suspended accounts turned back on.
-Hollywood malbushim and journoscum are so ass-mad at Musk supposedly breaking up their heavily curated safe space that they start changing their Twitter handles to "Elon Musk," not realizing that part of the verification privilege means not spoofing other accounts just for burn book points, then actually believe they've exposed some sort of "hypocrisy" when their accounts get shut down.

And the best part is that Musk hasn't made ANY actual changes to the the platform other than the subscription service for the internet sticker and more features, and a rule about spoofing accounts. That's it.

If there was no other evidence that these people are a net drain on society and the country would hardly suffer for their absence, the last week is elegant proof all by itself.

There actually has been a slight change. Conservative shitposters have been able to marginally post more critical things/dank memes that would have gotten them suspended earlier (for example, Oilfield_Rando and Neville_the_Cat). Nothing horrendously obvious, but it's apparent that they are worrying less about self-censoring what they post, and they are not being punished for it. Whether this is a result of the tamping down of the censorship squad at Twitter, or mere overwork or lockout of employees, it is starting a more robust criticism of The Powers That Be, and allowing these accounts to be better aggregators of news/nonsense on the internets every morning.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

I believe Musk was supposed to fire pretty much the entire censorship, er, "content management" team, so a lot of the milder shitposts are probably getting through because those fuckers all got locked out this weekend. The whole "instances of people saying the 'N-word' went up 500%" was mostly trolls testing the algorithms and moderation environment, not Musk being okay with such language. From what I understand, most of that got shut down pretty fast because it's already embedded in the software.

      3. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

Addendum: Per that article David Frum posted a few days ago, there's a few tweets calling for Biden to strip Musk of his government contracts and security clearances after endorsing the GOP for the mid-terms, for "election interference."

Yeah, go ahead and cut yourself off from one of the two companies capable of putting our satellites into orbit that give you GPS in the middle of nowhere, because fuck knows you're too dumb to know how to read an actual map that doesn't order you around like a fucking dog, all to take down Tesla Man Bad.

Today, ENB linked to an article about how Democrats are abandoning the working class.

Yesterday, she criticized AOC. And linked to a review of Hillary and Chelsea's new Apple+ show that asks the question, "Presumably there's a point to 'Gutsy,' but what?" And she criticized the Socialist Workers' Party of Spain.

The day before that she questioned why the White House is bragging about Social Security increases that are automatically triggered by inflation.

They have been beating up on moderate, white, non-progressive more and more over the last decade. Which is pretty much punching down, the progressives being the overwhelming majority in power positions at universities these days. Anyone with any alternative opinion literally gets shouted down, and we hear reports of conservative speakers being branded Nazis almost constantly.

Someone says "I'd appreciate it if you didn't demonize me any more" just one time, and ENB suddenly thinks this is a both sides issue.

Go find someone minding his own business. Kick him in the balls, over and over and over. After the 20th kick, when he punches you in the nose, then its "White men sure are happy to use violence when it suits their political agenda!"

I’d like to feel that she’d be screeching about that that. And then recognize the inherent racism in the former is exactly like the inherent racism in the latter.

A “problem of whiteness” would seem to be based on the notion that people are born with inherent negative traits that are strictly associated with the color of their skin, but it would be anathema to imply that blacks or hispanics or asians or… have inherent negative traits strictly due to the color of their skin.

Somehow it’s OK to make racist assumptions about white people? It's not, it's still racist.

      1. mpercy   3 years ago

It's also perfectly OK in their book to use common racist tropes, provided that the POC being targeted is not on team blue.

"Herschel Walker's candidacy is a white insult to Black people."

"Walker is what they think of us, and they think we’re big, ignorant, and easily manipulated. They think we’re shady or criminal. They think we’re tools to be used. The Walker campaign exists as a political minstrel show: a splashy rendition of what white Republicans think Black people look and sound like."

"I make a hard distinction between Black conservatives and these tokens" – referring to Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and Walker – "who are out here right now, shucking and jiving for their white handlers."

"Walker has positioned himself into being a useful fool for those who don't have the best interests of Black people or this democracy at heart."

"[Herschel Walker's] irrelevant to the Black community, and we should treat him as such."

"Herschel Walker, the football star turned Georgia Senate candidate, is an animated caricature of a Black person drawn by white conservatives."

"Most white people in the South vote 'R' like their entire white supremacist project depends on it."

"Georgia Republicans want Walker because he's Black and Warnock is Black, and they think they can defeat Warnock in November if they can shave just a little of the Black vote..."

"Mr. Walker was merely a vessel for the G.O.P. and Mr. Trump's ambitions."

"He's a puppet on a string, and somebody's pulling those strings really good."

        1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

      2. mpercy   3 years ago

Not to be outdone in using racist attacks against blacks, the Democrats seem intent on racist attacks on Hispanics, too.

Democratic lawmakers and liberal media outlets alike have responded to the Republican Party's gains with Latino voters by attacking Hispanic Republicans. Flores's opponent in November, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D., Texas), argued in June that he is more qualified than Flores because he "wasn't born in Mexico." Weeks later, Arizona representative Rubén Gallego (D.) said a female Hispanic Republican running for Congress in the state was not sufficiently Latina because she took her husband's last name.

The New York Times, meanwhile, said Flores's win marked the "Rise of the Far-Right Latina," citing the Republican's support for religiosity, strong borders, and traditional values. A Texas political blog that has received campaign funds from Gonzalez also attacked Flores last month, referring to the congresswoman as "Miss Frijoles," "Miss Enchiladas," and a "cotton pickin' liar."

"Who does this Mayra Flores think she is? Somebody said she was crowned Miss Frijoles 2022 in San Benito," Texas political blogger Jerry McHale, who has received $1,200 from Gonzalez's campaign, wrote on July 2. "She isn't in congressman Vicente Gonzalez's league. She isn't even in the bush leagues unless she doesn't shave her p**sy."

Yeah, forgiveness requires actual contrition, not a disingenuous attempt to stave off fury when your team's about to get its shit pushed in.

Even Satan is deserving of forgiveness, but only if he humbles himself to do so, and like him, these people are far too proud to ever admit that they fucked up and indulged in rejection-obsessed behavior. When vaxx-pimping whores like Julie Powell catch COVID and die of a heart attack a few weeks later the day after getting hairy black tongue, you're not going to see anything other than grave-dancing.

“No more drilling. There is no more drilling,” Biden snapped at a young woman in the crowd. “I haven’t formed any new drilling.”

I'm beyond flabbergasted that this is the stance Reason would take on this. Not really surprised, just this is like the utter defeat of Reason/reason. After years of professors being hounded in their offices, accosted in the halls, violent disruption of speeches, first-hand videos of such, full receipts, hoax racial stunts propagated via Tweets, we get "A stupid *class* that conservatives *students* (aka, the customers, Reason) didn't approve of was cancelled because of their activism." without evidence beyond tweeting.

So, how long until we get the article cheerleading FIRE for defending professors' free speech rights to teach a "Problem of Whiteness" class to students against their will?

President Biden had hoped to preside over a moment of reconciliation after the turmoil of the Trump years. But the fever of polarizing politics has not broken ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Biden is helpless in this polarization. Ignore what he says or how he acts. It isnt his fault.

    1. JesseAz   3 years ago

And so these are frustrating, even perplexing times for Mr. Biden, who according to confidants had expected the fever of polarizing politics to have broken by now and was surprised that it had not. The presidency he envisioned, one where he presided over a moment of reconciliation, is not the presidency he has gotten. He thought that if he could simply govern well, everything would work out, which in hindsight strikes some around him as shockingly naïve if somewhat endearing.

Why won't they ignore the politicization of the FBI going after their opponents? Why won't they ignore the ineffective policies??

Along with not further polarizing the political environment. We'll see if his staff take this week's losses, assuming they're as bad as everyone expects them to be at this point, and goes the Bill Clinton route, or the Barack Obama route.

This reeks of hagiography. I think it's reasonable to talk about the complexity of politics, but when Biden's actions don't meet his sentiment expressed you have to question whether a known liar is simply lying, or worse, he's truly confused.

        1. Zeb   3 years ago

Yeah, the only way that makes sense at all is if Biden really has no idea what's going on. If he thinks things should be less polarized now, he has no idea what words have been coming out of his own mouth.

Serious question about the whole pronoun business. Are the woke grammatically challenged? If the nominative is He then of course the accusative is Him. If the nominative is She then of course the accusative is Her. If the nominative is They then of course the accusative is Them. I work around people who obsessively list their pronouns, including trans and non-binary peeps and have never seen a He/Her or a She/Him or any They whatsoever who didn’t put Them as the second one. WT actual F is up with the way they formulate all that?!

I am actually amazed ENB found a way to cite every left leaning polling agency while ignoring groups like Trafalgar Group that have been more accurate the last few years. She is also citing national polls instead if race specific polls.

Even in the national polls the GOP is showing an advantage with independents in the double digits, meaning the polls cited are skewed to democrats as their polling bias using predicted voting patterns.

Generally these polls under sample gop support by around 3 points.

      2. Mother's Lament   3 years ago (edited)

Let me ask you this. Are you fine with classes being supportively taught on Nazi Race Theory? Because that’s exactly what they were teaching, just with some of the races positions switched. But ENB is pretending it was a legitimate line of scientific social theory.

I’m anti-censorship, but it’s not hypocrisy to still be against publicly funded institutions using funding to promote subjects like racism, pedophilia and classism.

If they want to teach race hate they should do it without public financial support.

It's also important to note that conservatives protested the class, they didn't close it. The university did that, so ENB is misrepresenting the situation.

        1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

But ENB is pretending it was a legitimate line of scientific social theory.

Right on cue you insist that anyone pointing out censorship agrees with what is being censored.

          1. JesseAz   3 years ago

What is the censorship? Words have meanings and definitions. The college responded to outrage, they pulled it themselves. A separate entity did not ban the class. There was no law. There was no threat of accreditation being pulled. It was pulled due to market response.

Guess I will add censorship to the long list of words you dont know.

          2. Mother's Lament   3 years ago (edited)

What law was passed to terminate this class dummy? Consumer outrage to pull a product is not censorship but a market reaction.

        1. Roscoe Ioele   3 years ago

It's only a market reaction when every financial institution, ISP, domain registrar, payment processor, hosting provider, social media site, and software distribution platform simultaneously closes your accounts and refuses to do business with you all within the same day. When white people complaint to the dean about being compelled to attend a racist class castigating them as defective because of their skin color that's censorship.

Just curious. Would ENB support public dollars going to this class if it was labeled with other adjectives?

    1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

She's also lying by inferring that conservatives closed the class instead of merely shining a light on it.

Once again, ENB is propagandizing (i.e. spreading lies) in an eleventh hour attempt to help left wing carbon banning Democrats keep control of US Congress, and many state governments.

Average nationwide polling data is totally useless in predicting winners or losers in hundreds of different races in 50 different states, hundreds of Congressional districts, and thousands of state legislative districts.

The only thing that might prevent a huge Red Wave tomorrow is if lots of clueless folks vote for Libertarian Party spoiler candidates, which could help some left wing Democrats eek out tiny victories.

Twitter has always had a rule against impersonation not marked parody, especially for blue checks considered verified.

In response to some comedians impersonating him in a mocking—but clearly not-actually-him—way on Twitter, Musk declared yesterday: "Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying 'parody' will be permanently suspended."

ENB, you are a disingenuous shit. This has always been a part of Twitter's TOS.

    https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/twitter-impersonation-and-deceptive-identities-policy

You may not impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations to mislead, confuse, or deceive others, nor use a fake identity in a manner that disrupts the experience of others on Twitter.

We prohibit the following behaviors under this policy:

    Impersonation

You can’t pose as an existing person, group, or organization in a confusing or deceptive manner.

It's right there, at the link, in black and white.

    1. JesseAz   3 years ago

They even used this policy to suspend mini AOC despite being marked as parody.

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

        THAT'S DIFFERENT!

democrats (enb) are not the part of truth. truth is not a leftwing value so this is completely expected.

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

        Old-fashioned objective truth is racist!

    3. SoSoCoCoMoFo   3 years ago

There's nothing in that policy that says, "without clearly specifying 'parody'". That is a new requirement, imposed by Lonnie because reasons.

Obviously, when the user's actual Twitter handle ("@whatever") is clearly visible in the handle field, no one with a brain would be "misled", "confused" or "deceived".

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

It still violates the policy, if you bothered to read it, Shrike. Of course, you never do read the entire link.

        1. SoSoCoCoMoFo   3 years ago

I couldn't care less about Twitter, but the policy does not, as I said, require clear specification of "parody".

  40. Knutsack   3 years ago

This whole Twitter thing has the vibe of a high school newspaper. Mean girls pissed because the editor isn't running the paper the way they want it, and this is all they have in life.

All the while, most of the students not giving a fuck because they'd rather watch a football game, or go to a party to drink beer and maybe some some weed.

"Scores of pre-election lawsuits have been filed in battleground states ahead of Tuesday's election," reports CNN. "Much of the current litigation focuses on the processes surrounding how votes are cast and counted—with some lawsuits seizing on the same debunked conspiracy theories about election fraud that propelled the court efforts to overturn the 2020 election."

Debunked? 2 dozen court cases have ruled on illegal election changes for 2020. Democrats have continued violating state election laws. These are not conspiracy theories dumbass.

    1. SoSoCoCoMoFo   3 years ago

Debunked. Trump & Co. lost 62 out of 63 election fraud cases filed after the 2020 election.

      But you knew that.

      1. JesseAz   3 years ago (edited)

No they didn’t. How fucking dumb are you? I’ve provided the numbers before. Vast majority he lost were on standing or mootness, not merits. The ones on merit he won 30+%

Then there again the 2 dozen cases since about illegal election changes.

"Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying 'parody' will be permanently suspended."

That makes sense. I can't go around pretending to be Abrams or Biden, unless I indicate that I'm not either.

I understand that all your friends are full on Spacemanbad, ENB, but I don't see what's "snowflake" about specifying you're not the real person.

    1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

Yet you're 100% fine with impersonations on this forum. Why is that?

      1. JesseAz   3 years ago (edited)

Do you have a citation for your claim? I mean your buddy White Mike admitted to doing it. Yet you support him.

        1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

Your ability to say things that are completely dishonest is really amazing, though one of these days you'll fuck up and say something truthful.

          1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

You used to switch nicks all the time, you hypocritical fuck. The fact that using the "mute user" button on "sarcasmic" in old threads will hide a half dozen names is proof of that.

            1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

I have never switched nicks. Ever. This is the part where you call me a liar for disagreeing with what you say about me.

              1. JesseAz   3 years ago

I'm still waiting on the citation of your initial assertion.

                1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

                  1. JesseAz   3 years ago

So not citation? Meaning you lied? You again do what you accuse others of.

              2. Roscoe Ioele   3 years ago

Yeah, you have you lying piece of shit. You have admitted to it several times, and on top of that you've also accidentally outed almost all of your socks because you're a moronic alcoholic who can't keep his browser windows straight and routinely copy and paste between your socks accidentally.

            2. sarcasmic   3 years ago

And no, that's proof that someone was impersonating me and others.
Tulpa bragged about it. Or are you going to insist that didn't happen?

              1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

It was funny as hell, but do you really want to go on record right now that you weren't doing it yourself?

                1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

Why would I impersonate myself? Yeah I'm going on record. You and your girlfriends will have a lot of fun with that since you know what I think and do, and whenever what I say deviates from your narrative then you insist I'm lying.

                  1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Don't get cute, you stupid fuck. You were impersonating others and you know it.

                    1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

I never once changed my nick. Ever. I know you can't believe that because it goes against the narrative, but it's the truth.

                    2. sarcasmic   3 years ago

Thing is, I can't. Years ago I forgot the password for the email I used to create the account, so I can't change anything on it because that requires responding to a confirmation email. I literally cannot change the nick on my account.

                    3. JesseAz   3 years ago

I like how sarc is careful to say he never changed his nick which doesn't exclude creating sock accounts.

                    4. Roscoe Ioele   3 years ago

Hey, remember how you started adding whitespace to other people's nicks to "prove" that you were "hacked" on one of the numerous occasions when you spent 18 hours drunk-posting and then sobered up and realized what a colossal fuckup and piece of shit you are and had to lie to cover it up?

See, it's funny, because you constantly fucking lie, loud, proud, and in public and then lie about the lies you told because you're such a stupid, drunken, troglodytic piece of shit that you can't keep them straight in your own gutrot-addled head.

                    5. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

"remember how you started adding whitespace to other people’s nicks to “prove” that you were “hacked” on one of the numerous occasions"

He remembers, but he's a dishonest fuck so he's going to pretend.

            3. sarcasmic   3 years ago

If you go to past threads and highlight "sarcasmic" you will find a lot of them are "sarcasmic " or something similar. Remember when I pointed that out and you insisted I was doing it myself? Yeah, you're all for impersonations as long as you don't like the person being impersonated. No principles at all.

              1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

You were posting shitfaced and then pretending it wasn't you. The mute button shows it was though.

                1. sarcasmic   3 years ago (edited)

The space in the name proves it wasn’t. But you will never accept that because it would mean you were wrong, and you're not man enough to admit to being wrong.

                  1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Oh yeah, your hairspace debacle. The mute button says otherwise.

                    1. sarcasmic   3 years ago

It shows the other names Tulpa was impersonating.

                    2. sarcasmic   3 years ago (edited)

What I don’t get is why you insist it was me even after Tulpa bragged about it. You’ve got someone saying “It wasn’t me” and someone saying “It was meeee” and you insist the latter is the liar. Well I do understand. You don’t care what the truth is. You just like to say lies about me to get a reaction and impress your girlfriends.

                    3. Roscoe Ioele   3 years ago

Tulpa never said anything of the kind. And since you accuse me of being Tulpa multiple times a week, it's fucking hilarious that you're incredulous someone doesn't believe you. It's even more hilarious because you're a known and proven liar.

          2. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Also, I'm glad you're trying to start shit with me today. I was in a pissy mood.

          3. JesseAz   3 years ago (edited)

What did I say that was dishonest? I also noticed no citation.

          4. R Mac   3 years ago

Right ENB, you're trying to cover for Team Blue. Why don't you just go work for Vox already?

This is from Politico, which does lean Democratic:

    https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/07/election-forecast-gop-near-house-majority-00065356

The final forecast lists six “Toss Up” races, one more than two years ago. But because four of those seats are currently held by Democrats and two by Republicans, it’s fair to describe the GOP as a slim favorite. If the two parties split those six seats evenly, Republicans will win a 51-49 majority.

Indeed, we would narrowly favor Republicans to win in Nevada and Wisconsin, though both races remain extremely tight. Republican Adam Laxalt is ahead in GOP-commissioned polling, though independent surveys still give Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto a chance. In Wisconsin, GOP Sen. Ron Johnson jumped out to a lead earlier this fall, but the final polls suggest that Democrat Mandela Barnes remains in contention.

The current breakdown of the House (allocating vacant seats to the party that last won them) is 222 Democrats and 213 Republicans. Even if Republicans fail to win any of the 26 “Toss Up” races — just 2 of the 26 would give them the majority — they are currently projected to gain 3 seats. An even, 50-50 split of the “Toss Up” districts would translate to a 16-seat Republican gain.

A GOP sweep of those “Toss Up” races would represent a gain of nearly 30 seats, and it’s not unusual for one party to win the lion’s share of competitive contests. In 2020, Republicans won 26 of the 27 seats rated as “Toss Up” by POLITICO. In 2018, Democrats won 15 of POLITICO’s 22 “Toss Up” contests in their 40-seat wave election.

The most recent district to shift into the red column is in California’s Central Valley, where Republicans are now favored to pick up an open seat that Biden would’ve carried by 11 percentage points in 2020. It’s another example of Democrats’ struggles in blue states — especially in seats without an incumbent on the ballot.

    1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

Neither Wisconsin nor Nevada are close. Those are almost sure Republican wins, especially Wisconsin. Note, the best Politico can say about the Democrat in Wisconsin is "he is still in contention". Yeah aren't we all.

I think Warnock's slum lord scandal has finished him off. I bet Walker wins 50% and doesn't even have to do a runoff. Lurch is done in Pennsylvania. Even the Philadelphia fraud machine wont' save him. The Democrats best chance is Kelly holding on in Arizona. The Republican floor is 52 and their ceiling is 55. They could win in Arizona, New Hampshire, and Washington all three.

      1. JesseAz   3 years ago

Masters surged after Victor dropped and endorsed him.

        1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

I think Masters will win too. I don't think Wisconsin should even be on the board as competitive. I think the Republicans win Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Nevada all four. That is 53 seats right there. Then they have a good shot in both New Hampshire and Washington. If it is a real blow out, they end up with 55 seats or maybe more if there is a miracle in Connecticut or Colorado, which is unlikely but possible.

          1. Commenter_XY   3 years ago

Briggs, I don't think PA is quite in the bag, but POTUS Biden talking about stopping all drilling does not help Fetterman at all. To me, it is very, very close and still favors Fetterman. There are already 500K+ mail-in ballots for Fetterman...he has a pretty big lead heading into election day.

Weather will be good tomorrow in PA.

        2. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

I have a hard time believing a Libertarian candidate has impact either way.

          1. JesseAz   3 years ago

Masters polling jumped 1.5 the week victor posted his announcement and endorsement.

Kelly has stayed a flat 45% for a while now. Usually a death knell for incumbents.

      2. Bill Godshall   3 years ago

Since the Libertarian US Senate candidate in AZ (who was polling at 6%) dropped out of the race last week and endorsed Blake Masters, most of his supporters will likely vote for Masters as well.

  46. A Cynical Asshole   3 years ago

None of which means anything when it comes to predicting who will win each individual race, which is all that really matters. A national poll is pointless.

    1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

Is Brown so stupid she doesn't understand that or is she just that desperate to put up something that isn't negative about the Democrats' election chances she is willing to say something that obviously stupid?

*dons tinfoil hat* It could be that we’re seeing this narrative that the R’s and D’s are in a virtual dead heat come out now, on the eve of the election, for two three reasons:

        1. They’re desperately trying to give potential D voters hope so that they’ll go vote instead of staying in and doing laundry or watching Netflix or some shit. E.g. “Go out and vote! It’s not as hopeless as we all thought!”

        2. They’re getting ready to run their own version of the “sToLeN eLeKsHuN” playbook. They’ll point to these polls as “proof” that the GOP shouldn’t have picked up as many seats as they did so they obviously cheated somehow (because election denial is only bad when the other side does it).

        3. Edit: Just thought of a third possibility: the fix is in and they'll point to these polls as proof that the GOP never really had a large lead and anyone who thinks otherwise is a dirty, filthy "elekshun denyer" (because again, it's only a bad thing when the other side does it).
        *doffs tinfoil hat*

        1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

The fix is not in. It might be in for one or two senate races but that is it. And even those might be beyond the margin of fraud.

          1. A Cynical Asshole   3 years ago

Yeah, to clarify, the three options are in descending order of likeliness. Option 1 is the most likely, in fact I don't think you really need to have your tinfoil hat on all that tight for that one to be believable, then 2, then 3 which I'll admit, you've got have your tinfoil hat strapped on pretty tight to believe that one. But it occurred to me right after I originally posted the comment, and I believe in being thorough when engaging in blatant conspiracy theorizing.

        2. Moonrocks   3 years ago

          the fix is in...

The fix is in, but not to the extent that they need to get a "draw" or a win. Many of the states they need Fortified have taken steps to clean up their election procedures, and many others have (possibly) swung far enough that their Fortifications won't be enough. Democrats' dirty tricks have probably saved them 10 or so seats in the House and maybe a Senate seat, but I don't think that will be enough to stem the tide.

        3. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

Fourth possibility: they did a poll, and that’s the results they got.

          1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

Sure. They polled the newsroom, friends at a recent party, and the hipster coffee shop crowd across the street.

A fourth possibility, one that I attest to, is this article is thrown together quickly each day and isn't well researched or well thought out. Election politics are not what ENB is familiar with, and so, like many days, a lot of this information is just collected from her Twitter feed and rebroadcast.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

And to be fair to her, election politics are fucking boring. I hate this time of the year, it's all boring hypotheticals and moving around margins of errors. It's sports betting for nerds.

          2. Moonrocks   3 years ago

a lot of this information is just collected from her Twitter feed and rebroadcast

In other words, it's the leftist narrative du jour, leading to the same question just with ENB's name removed.

    2. damikesc   3 years ago

Also, historically, if Dems had less than 3 or 4 point lead on the national generic ballot --- they got slaughtered.

As has been asked elsewhere: When have polls ever OVERESTIMATED Republican votes? They do so with Democrat votes with consistent regularity.

  47. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

I live in Maryland Virginia media market. I had not seen a single political ad all fall until last night. Last night on the Chiefs Titans games well over half of the commercials were Democratic ads. They all had the same "oh my God they are going to take your abortion rights and are election deniers" message. For the Democrats to spend the money it takes to do that big of a prime time ad dump in an NFL game in the DC/MD/NOVA market this late in the campaign, tells me they are in a lot of trouble. No way should they be spending that kind of money in a media market that is normally somewhere left of Trotsky.

Second, you can't overstate how pathetic their message is. People who are using their credit cards to pay for their electric bill and groceries don't give a f*ck about abortion or January 6th. Anyone in this area who cares about those things would vote Democrat no matter what. I think the Democrats would be better off saying nothing than running the ads they have. All the ads are doing is telling the voters, "we couldn't care less about your life or any of your concerns and only care about culture war b.s."

    https://6abc.com/pennslyvania-mail-in-ballots-pa-election-2022-midterm-supreme-court/12409385/

Pennsylvania officials cannot count votes from mail-in or absentee ballots that lack accurate, handwritten dates on their return envelopes, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday, a week before tabulation will begin in races for governor, the U.S. Senate and the state Legislature.

    1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

Here is the thing about PA. They got rid of universal mail in ballots. You have to request a mail in ballot if you want one. In 2020, everyone got a mail in ballot. So, the Democratic machine in Philadelphia had pretty much an unlimited supply of names from which to print fake mail in ballots. This year they don't. Democrats are generally COVIDiots and love their mail in ballots. So, the majority of mail in ballot requests come from Democrats. The number of requests from Democrats in Philadelphia is way low, like 146,000 or something. So, I don't think the Philly printing presses are going to be able to save Lurch like they did Biden in 20.

As a rough estimate, the Dems gained 400K votes overnight.
The only state that was really out of whack for mail in votes vs in-person votes was Pennsylvania. In most states, the mail-in votes ran about 5 percentage points higher in favor of Dems than the in-person votes. In Pennsylvania it was like they shipped them in from California. Instead of going 55-45 in a toss-up state, they were like 65-35.

          1. CE   3 years ago

The only thing more amazing was that none of the big TV networks called the race the wrong way on Election Night. They all said that the Dems had assured them they expected enough mail-in votes to make up the deficit. Before they were even counted.

Progressive argumentation basically amounts to issuing long series of definitive statements involving highly arguable and subjective assumptions that are treated as already decided and beyond the point of reasonable disagreement. It's as though the argument already happened, the progressive viewpoint conclusively won, and the "argument" is just laying out the victorious conclusions for everyone else. If you disagree, you're not just mistaken, you're also a bigot and a fascist. Nearly all progressive opinion journalism follows this model. An editor can't help with that.

Stacy Abrams is a great example of the corrupting nature of our national politics. I read a long article about her when she was in the Georgia government before she rose up to be a nation figure. She was liberal, but well liked. She was willing to talk to people, to hear arguments, and to work with folks on the other side. She had a good reputation among those in the Georgia congress.
So, that article could have been a lie, I don't know about Georgia politics, but I think we do see this happen. Relatively reasonable actors are incentivized at a national level to move towards the absurd rhetorical style we have now. That's too bad, and seems to tell us something about what people want from national politics.

The report published by the British-founded charity Oxfam Monday based its findings on detailed analysis of the investments of 125 of the world’s richest billionaires.

It found that, contrary to average people, the wealthiest individuals’ investments account for up to 70% of their emissions.

“These few billionaires together have ‘investment emissions’ that equal the carbon footprints of entire countries like France, Egypt or Argentina.

          Abstract:
The world’s richest people emit huge and unsustainable amounts of carbon and, unlike ordinary people, 50% to 70% of their emissions result from their investments. New analysis of the investments of 125 of the world’s richest billionaires shows that on average they are emitting 3 million tonnes a year, more than a million times the average for someone in the bottom 90% of humanity. The study also finds billionaire investments in polluting industries such as fossil fuels and cement are double the average for the Standard & Poor 500 group of companies. Billionaires hold extensive stakes in many of the world’s largest and most powerful corporations, which gives them the power to influence the way these companies act. Governments must hold them to account, legislating to compel corporates and investors to reduce carbon emissions, enforcing more stringent reporting requirements and imposing new taxation on wealth and investments in polluting industries.

There's no hypocrisy here. This is basically saying that rich people have productive investments since things like emissions are tied to people doing productive work.
To associate that with hypocrisy is just doing the leg work for the more extreme edge of environmentalism which actively argues that the only true solution to environmental problems is to be less productive.

The working class going Dem has made the Republicans so much more fun than they used to be and the Democrats so much less fun. For all of my life the Republicans have been the political equivalent of the Omegas and the Democrats the Deltas. Now it is the exact opposite, only the Omegas rather than being preppies have purple hair and are "nonbionary" but every but even more conformist and dreary.

It’s a more erudite description of what Rev calls “our betters”. Think it was first coined by an urban planner, Richard Florida https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Florida

          1. A Cynical Asshole   3 years ago

            From the Wikipedia link:

Florida's theory asserts that metropolitan regions with high concentrations of technology workers, artists, musicians, lesbians and gay men, and a group he describes as "high bohemians", exhibit a higher level of economic development.[5] Florida refers to these groups collectively as the "creative class." He posits that the creative class fosters an open, dynamic, personal and professional urban environment. This environment, in turn, attracts more creative people, as well as businesses and capital. He suggests that attracting and retaining high-quality talent versus a singular focus on projects such as sports stadiums, iconic buildings, and shopping centers, would be a better primary use of a city's regeneration of resources for long-term prosperity.

That's a really long way of saying "this motherfucker invented gentrification."

        1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

Depends on the state. Here, in Illinois, they are strongly controlled by public employee unions (AFSCME and SEIU) as well as the "knowledge class". It's not really a struggle between them so much as both trying to pull the wool over the eyes of private employee unions.

          1. NoVaNick   3 years ago

    https://apnews.com/article/africa-arrests-united-nations-only-on-ap-e6ebc331460345c5abd4f57d77f535c1

In the ruins of a tropical hideaway where jetsetters once sipped rum under the Caribbean sun, the abandoned children tried to make a life for themselves. They begged and scavenged for food, but they never could scrape together enough to beat back the hunger, until the U.N. peacekeepers moved in a few blocks away.

The men who came from a far-away place and spoke a strange language offered the Haitian children cookies and other snacks. Sometimes they gave them a few dollars. But the price was high: The Sri Lankan peacekeepers wanted sex from girls and boys as young as 12.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/01/02/handing-out-unemployment-aid-people-who-refuse-get-vaccinated-is-silly/

From an economic perspective, it is also bad policy to be giving aid to those who would rather be fired than get vaccinated. The fate of the U.S. economy hinges on getting the coronavirus under control. When cases spike, people stay home and don’t spend as much money, which hurts local businesses and vacation destinations.

Unemployment compensation is supposed to be for workers let go for no fault of their own, such as when a business downsizes during a recession or a factory closes in a town. If someone is fired for cause, they are not supposed to receive unemployment aid. By refusing to get vaccinated, these workers are violating company policy and being fired for cause. Even worse, they are endangering the lives of co-workers and customers.

    THE EXPERTS HAVE SPOKEN!!!

Should you save a dying stranger if you know they eat MEAT? Oxford philosopher controversially argues that it can be ethical to let them die because of the suffering they cause to animals (and he's not even a vegan!)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-11389953/Should-save-dying-stranger-know-eat-MEAT.html

Argument stems from the great suffering a meat-eater inflicts on animals in life
Expert says chickens in factory farms suffer for months in tortuous conditions
So the lesser evil could be to let carnivores die in emergencies, the expert claims
Even a promise to convert to veganism might not make them worth saving

Reading the article, this is definitely all one big "what-if" which is what philosophers do.
And, I think he's right. I don't know where his thinking is coming from, but I think he's making an argument that is logically coherent from a lot of recent animal rights logic.
That this should be taken seriously and consider something to give pause to animal rights logic is another matter. If one listens to animal rights folks, and increasingly people take it very seriously at least in the US, then there is no clear delineation between humans and animals and therefore eating meat is a pretty vile act.

There's also a big Utilitarian aspect to this argument, which is a different problem and I think we're reaching the absurd conclusions of utilitarianism anyway. I hope we can ultimately do away with it.

      1. BYODB   3 years ago

Of course, if one is to engage in that line of reasoning it also becomes a moral imperative to kill all carnivorous animals as long as you don't eat them and do it quickly.

  71. Moderation4ever   3 years ago

While a lot has been said about the outcome, I think one of the most interesting questions to answer will be on turnout. The midterms generally don't get the attention that Presidential election get, and I am looking to see if people are more interested in voting this midterm election. A lot has been said about the outcome, but what if we start to see people more interested in voting. I would think this is a good thing whatever the outcome.

    1. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

Are the Republicans still shooting themselves in the feet by eschewing convenient voting methods such as mail-in voting?

      1. Moderation4ever   3 years ago

I don't think they are doing that this year. There is a lot of early voting this year. Republican have been strong early voters and most of the rules supporting early voting in Wisconsin were made by the Republican controlled legislature. With Trump out of the way I think Republican can go back to early voting in good conscience.

    2. Demosthenes of Athens   3 years ago

I can't remember which Sowell book it was, but one of his assertions was that higher voter turnout was a sign of political instability and often a precursor to conflict in many African nations. Its a good thing when the government doesn't have that much power over your life, and therefore you don't really have to care about it.

More turnout isn't always a good thing.

    Child Rape in Hollywood
    https://elizabethnickson.substack.com/p/child-rape-in-hollywood

Most of these girls were so beautiful they were sexualized early. The moment they have a bit of fame, they turn to yachting where they can make a few million every summer. Meghan Markle, Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, all participated, were invited to lavish yachts where they sleep with billionaires, industry executives, and are paid six figures per night. Howie Mandel’s wife is said to have supplied them out of the cast of Deal or No Deal. Ariana Grande cancelled a concert because a yachting gig would pay her more.

...According to servers at these parties, the attendees are executives at huge corporations, filthy rich, incredibly successful, managing billion dollar companies. They are so rich and powerful that “they do the most inhumane things to feel some sort of rush, the goal is the adrenaline. It’s the power over a child, that makes them feel unstoppable”.

The rape rooms at Disney parties are well known. Buying a young star’s virginity for huge money is better than a limited edition Ferrari. Anyone can buy that.

    1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

Epstein and Weinstein were just the tip of the dick here.

I used to discount conspiracy theories about the rich and well-connected being a bunch of pedos. I can't discount them as conspiracy theories so much as they appear to have been spoilers.

      1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

It makes sense. These people have no religion or value anything except money and pleasure. The problem with money and status and pleasure is that there is never enough of it. To an average person it might sound great to have your pick of Hollywood actresses as you cast movies but after a while it would lose its thrill. If you have no morals or any commitment to anything beyond money, power, and pleasure, you will go looking for something kinkier and more exclusive. And that usually leads to kids if it involves sex.

You can see this with more ordinary people with child porn. Very few people start out being into child porn. They start out with regular porn and then when the thrill of that wears off end up looking for something kinkier and that inevitably leads to kids. It is not that everyone who looks at porn ends up being into child porn. It is that people who get addicted to the thrill of porn often end up into child porn.

        1. perlmonger   3 years ago

I'm not sure I buy it as being even that abnormal. Isn't this the way members of various aristocracies have behaved basically forever? "Older male Homo sapiens wanting to engage in sexual activity with much younger, recently fertile, female Homo sapiens" actually sounds likely to be the sort of thing that goes back to Homo habilis and beyond.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't attempt to do better, just that I don't find it even slightly shocking.

It’s been rumored that's how Markle met Harry, and he got so irritated at Prince Phillip telling him that he needed to stop tomcatting around and settle down like William, that he married a yachting hookup that he didn’t even really like as a “fuck you” to Grandpa.

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

I don't know the situation enough to comment, but I've honestly found that more rules that are clearly defined are better for forums then fewer that are applied on a whim. If Twitter is moving in the direction of more, but clearly defined and applied rules, I think that's probably a good thing.
Really, the only real irksome thing with a lot of moderation I see is the vagueness of the application and the lack of transparency as to why. Even if I disagree.

Hint: it’s not going to be the hard-Left progressives, who come from almost impossibly safe House districts and deep-blue states for Senate seats. It will be the centrists that get wiped out, along with the more-Left liberals. The rump Democrat caucuses will be almost entirely hard-Left if not completely so, and will elect leadership that will keep leading their party down the primrose paths that Sullivan outlines so clearly."

    https://hotair.com/ed-morrissey/2022/11/07/wsj-poll-the-red-wave-is-real-and-also-black-and-brown-n508672

Too bad. I don't feel bad for centrist democrats, if they even exist anymore. Any centrists left in Congress willingly threw their lots in with the hard left and chose to vote party-line on every piece of shit progressive policy. They deserve to lose their seats.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

The centrists clearly failed to moderate their party. If Wokeness is the cancer that caused their death, and the centrists refused to treat it, then imagine how badly they'll lose when they're 100% woke instead of 85% woke?

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

Years, maybe even decades of losses at the Senate and Presidential levels. A loss of most governorships. It might just be enough to turn the Donkey Party into a party like the Libertarian Party - a minor party.

      2. Cronut   3 years ago

It's mind blowing how badly any remaining centrists acted against their own self interest. Rabid left progressive policies are not popular with normal people, and normies- especially independents- are a necessary voting block to win elections. How shitty was their internal polling on issues, for them to think that throwing in with the extreme left was a good way to keep their jobs? You expect the hard left progs to live in a bubble of smug, but any centrists should have seen what was coming and started acting in their own self interest a while ago.

Substitute any other race for the word 'Whiteness' in that course name, and tell me it would still be taught / tolerated.

There's a difference between 'book bans' - not that you would know what one is anyway - and deciding not to teach racist bullshit.

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   3 years ago

You do understand that the term "whiteness" does not stand for "people with white skin", right?

      This is what "whiteness" means:

Whiteness and white racialized identity refer to the way that white people, their customs, culture, and beliefs operate as the standard by which all other groups of are compared. Whiteness is also at the core of understanding race in America. Whiteness and the normalization of white racial identity throughout America's history have created a culture where nonwhite persons are seen as inferior or abnormal.

This white-dominant culture also operates as a social mechanism that grants advantages to white people, since they can navigate society both by feeling normal and being viewed as normal. Persons who identify as white rarely have to think about their racial identity because they live within a culture where whiteness has been normalized.

      https://nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race/topics/whiteness

          1. Minadin   3 years ago

No. We think that it's wrong to collectivize people based on any one thing and then ascribe some set of shared attributes and / or RACIAL guilt to them based on biases and stereotypes.

            'The problem with Jewishness'

            'The problem with Orientals'

            'The problem with Hispanicness'

None of that would be acceptable, and it shouldn't be, because it's wrong to view people in that manner. People need to be treated with respect on an individual level and not just assigned to a category.

            3. chemjeff radical individualist   3 years ago

Here is the problem with Team Red and Team Blue right now when it comes to race.

Team Blue wants to make everything about race. In their view, most if not all social problems have some racial dimension that must be explored and addressed ad nauseum. And some of the supposed connections to race are, shall we say, tendentious.

Team Red, in totally reactionary fashion, has instead decided to deny that race is relevant AT ALL. Not only is Team Blue wrong about making everything about race, instead, NOTHING is about race. The Civil Rights Act solved all racial issues and therefore there is no need to ever mention the word ever again, and the only reason why we aren't living in a color-blind utopia right now is because of that nasty Team Blue always bringing it up. That's basically the Team Red position.

In reality both of these extremes are wrong. Not everything is about race, but neither is it true that NOTHING is about race. Refusing to even talk about race ensures that problems that are, at least in part, due to racial discrimination or bigotry never go away. For example, the maternal mortality rate for pregnant Black women is almost three times higher than the rate for all other women.

              https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/maternal-mortality/2020/maternal-mortality-rates-2020.htm

Why is that? Team Blue wants us to believe that the reason is 100% because of racial discrimination. Team Red wants us to believe that the reason has absolutely nothing to do with race at all. But reality is probably somewhere in the middle.

              1. JimboJr   3 years ago

The right's majority position can be summed up as "yes, we understand history has consequences", and a desire to have the CRA enforced equally.

The left's position can be summed up as demonizing/stereotyping based on race, an unevenly (purposefully) applying rules based on immutable characteristics. AKA, they want to be racist.

Again, I know you all think you are on the correct side of history, but it really isnt going to be kind to you. The fascists and Nazis the left complains about have so much in common with them its scary

          2. mad.casual   3 years ago

What is the word or phrase that you would like to give to the phenomenon of “a set of cultural assumptions that are treated as normative”?

Fiction. You would think someone identifying as an individualist would recognize that a group coalescing around a norm doesn't causally prescribe or enforce the norm to the group, much less any given data point, unless the 'individualist' was just playing stupid.

The issue, as you well know isn't the name. Or even really the content, it's the bad faith presentation and disingenuous disparity in the name of 'equality'.
Right: Uses Twitter like Yelp! to convince local business adding "shit burger" to their menu whether in name, or an actual sandwich containing actual shit, is a bad idea.
Left: Uses actual own feces to write "shit burger" on the wall. Then uses Twitter as over-the-fence propaganda mill to foment outrage about "shit burger" being written on the wall. Then doxxes, harasses, and assaults anyone who dares question "shit burger" narrative after hours, for no credit, at no cost to anyone, in a tangentially university-oriented way for being "shit burger conspiracists". Then goes on to further use Twitter to complain about the brutal oppression of shit burger conspiracists and the normalization of shit burger supremacy.

Again, find another schtick to hock your shit burgers, nobody's buying. Better yet, do yourself and everyone else a favor and stop trying to hock shit burgers altogether.

              Fiction.

Bullshit. Of course there are certain cultural assumptions that are considered normative. For example, the two-parent nuclear family. Why not polygamy? Why not large communal family arrangements, meaning, many unrelated people living together as if they were a family unit? Those exist but are generally considered 'weird' or 'abnormal'. There was even a whole TV show putting polygamists on display for how weird they are.

a group coalescing around a norm doesn’t causally prescribe or enforce the norm to the group

Oh, so you DO acknowledge the reality of certain cultural assumptions considered normative. I said nothing about how those norms are 'enforced'. Sometimes the only enforcement is social pressure, but in the case of polygamy, enforcement is with the use of state violence. I fully support the liberty of individuals to 'do their own thing' (without violating the NAP of course), but that doesn't mean that there isn't a set of normative standards.

If you're scrolling on mobile, phone or tablet, the reply button gets in the way when trying to advance the screen, and often causes you to start a reply when that wasn't your intention.

The data says you can fudge the numbers, shift categories, of all sorts of violent crimes - except murder.

You can't hide it when the bodies are stacking up.

Hence why the murder rate is the proxy for total violent crimes.

Huh. If only the administrators at the University of Chicago were more like these guys...

More recently, President Hanna Holborn Gray observed that “education should not be
intended to make people comfortable, it is meant to make them think. Universities
should be expected to provide the conditions within which hard thought, and therefore
strong disagreement, independent judgment, and the questioning of stubborn
assumptions, can flourish in an environment of the greatest freedom.”

The words of Harper, Hutchins, Levi, and Gray capture both the spirit and the promise
oftheUniversityofChicago.Because theUniversity is committedtofree and openinquiry
inallmatters, it guarantees allmembersoftheUniversity community the broadestpossible
latitude to speak, write, listen, challenge, and learn. Except insofar as limitations on that
freedom are necessary to the functioning of the University, the University of Chicago
fully respects and supports the freedom of all members of the University community
“to discuss any problem that presents itself.”

    https://provost.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/documents/reports/FOECommitteeReport.pdf

    1. mad.casual   3 years ago (edited)

They were. The discussion took place and you don’t like the outcome. It’s a funny twist on “The Emperor’s New Clothes” where, at the end, rather than the Emperor insisting the procession march on, you suddenly start scrambling to cover your own nakedness and point fingers shrieking, “You told me I looked gorgeous!”

Nobody, but nobody, is unclear on exactly what the issue with the class and/or title is and its potential for abuse. But you won’t let that stop you from showing up to play retarded.

      1. chemjeff radical individualist   3 years ago

So, are you going to commit right here and now to your support for a class on "The Problem with Trannies"?

          1. JimboJr   3 years ago

            that would require intellectual honesty.

Somehow this 'individualist' interested in equality has come down on the side of "its ok to group THESE certain people into negative stereotypes, but not these other groups favored by the elites in power" because we apparently have never had that go wrong in human history

          2. chemjeff radical individualist   3 years ago

I am not going to object to any institution of education offering any class on any relevant topic of intellectual pursuit in a professional and age-appropriate manner.

So no of course I object to a class called "The Problem With Trannies" because the name itself gives away the lie that the class is unprofessional and insulting.

But if the University of Chicago wanted to offer a class about transgenderism which included as a part of its content a critique or criticism of transitioning between genders then go right ahead. I won't stop you. Why would I?

            1. JimboJr   3 years ago

              "professional and age-appropriate manner."

Is that why you were against Desantis' Florida bill, because you agreed that topics including sexual orientation and different types of sex acts were age appropriate for K-3rd grade?

        2. mad.casual   3 years ago

No no, I get it. What they really meant was

I didn't say you didn't get it. Or that you didn't understand what it meant. "Play retarded" means you actually aren't retarded and fully understand what's going on, you just want to pretend that you don't.

You can play your "Universties should be free to torture people and call it an education." retarded game all you like. That doesn't mean everybody else has to be discomforted to whatever degree you or the University pleases.

Again, for an individualist, this isn't that hard... unless you're playing retarded.

Polls of the overall preferences of the entire electorate just before an election are worse than useless. Even the polls of likely close Senate and House races are misleading. Having said that, control of the Congress is highly over-rated. With a Democrat in the White House the only role for a GOP Congress would be to stop the Democrats for the next two years, and the GOP has a very sorry track record even for that limited goal. Also, when the Congress and the White House are firmly in GOP hands, they never ever repeal any of the Democrat agenda, preferring to focus on implementing their own worthless platform.

    1. Agammamon   3 years ago

With a sufficient lead the GOP can override those presidential vetos.

That scares the fuck out of the GOP - maybe having to deliver - so they'll fuck it up. They always do.

      1. SoSoCoCoMoFo   3 years ago

I'm not sure the polls are predicting veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate...

  95. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

So, this probably is pollyannish (Pollyannaish?) but I request everyone here who is voting tomorrow to please pay extra attention to your local and state races.
I've seen over the last decade a split in American politics. We have a completely disfunctional national political culture that is buttressed by a large amount of relatively reasonable local and state politics (I know California and Illinois are a shit-show, but I still think there are more reasonably run states than not).

One of the worst things we've seen in recent years is a move towards everything being brought up to the national level. Push back against that. Take your local elections seriously and engage with the laws being passed and the officials being elected.

    1. MWAocdoc   3 years ago

Although true, the main reason everything has been nationalized (even further) is that the two-party system eliminates any possibility of depolarizing the hot-button issues. The two-party system guarantees that either a Progressive Socialist or a Fascist Nationalist will win almost every election at almost every level of government - except, of course, for the corrupt big city elections where party doesn't matter. The only practical way I can see to defuse the situation at this point is to put all of our resources into establishing the ranked-choice, at-large election system to achieve proportional representation at every possible level of government in every state legislature and the Congress.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

I've been wondering something lately. So, I do think we have a variety of pretty well run states, that mostly fit the needs of people who live there. I'm starting to wonder if putting all of our anxieties into the federal government is what takes the energy from local politics and allows it to function a bit better.

I have no idea though. This is more my concern that systems are a pretty delicate balance, and that it's difficult to predict the consequences of changes. This isn't really pressing for anything though, this is just a thought.

        1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

Probably the best result though is that something non-political becomes the major siphon of focus for people. National politics are something akin to entertainment these days (and I'm clearly not free of that sin) and I think that's also not helpful.

    2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

    > The University of Chicago canceled a class called "The Problem of Whiteness" after conservative students and activists complained. Conservatives of late have imagined themselves the defenders of academic freedom. But as recent right-wing enthusiasm for book bans, laws limiting how teachers talk about subjects like race and gender, and campaigns like this show, much of the right is still plenty happy to limit academic freedom when it challenges their worldview.<

Is there no level of viciousness and irrationality on campus that should ever be objected to? Isn't the objection itself a form of speech? There’s no context in a declaration of equivalence like this. Would Reason magazine say that it would be wrong to protest the instituting of a course advocating mass murder of members of a particular group because doing so would impair “academic freedom”? It matters what exactly is being protested and whether the protest itself is just or unjust. How can these aspects be simply irrelevant? "Academic freedom" is not an ultimate end in itself that must be upheld regardless of any other consideration and even at the expense of one's own destruction.

    1. mpercy   3 years ago

White House climate envoy John Kerry is planning to develop a system where developing nations can earn “carbon credits” by cutting fossil fuel emissions, according to The Financial Times.

The plan would reward countries with carbon credits if they reduce CO2 emissions from their power sector and in turn, large corporations would be able to buy the credits to offset their own carbon emissions, the FT reported, citing sources familiar with the plan.

      https://www.tampafp.com/report-john-kerry-wants-to-pay-poor-countries-to-stop-using-fossil-fuels/

    2. mpercy   3 years ago

So it seems like the "rich countries" will create carbon credits out of thin air, give them to "poor countries" to not use fossil fuels (like that will work) then demand that corporations buy these credits.
