Blame the Government for the Adderall Shortage
Limiting the supply of a controlled substance does not remove demand. Users simply look elsewhere, including more unsavory sources.

The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic continues: This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that there is a shortage of Adderall. The pharmaceutical stimulant is prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurological disorder that inhibits focus in children and adults alike.
In its announcement, the FDA contended that Teva Pharmaceuticals, the largest manufacturer of Adderall and its generic equivalents, is "experiencing ongoing intermittent manufacturing delays," and while other companies also make the drug, "there is not sufficient supply to continue to meet U.S. market demand through those producers." Shortages may persist until March.
The FDA's announcement misses one important detail: the government's own role in the shortage.
During the pandemic, ADHD diagnoses skyrocketed. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had opened up the field of telemedicine by allowing physicians to issue prescriptions without an in-person visit. Then the sudden shift to Zoom schooling and parents doing double duty as their child's primary instructor revealed symptoms of hyperactivity and inattentiveness that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.
Adderall is classified as a Schedule II drug, meaning it has medicinal value but "a high potential for abuse." The DEA is empowered by federal law to "determine the total quantity of each basic class of controlled substance…necessary to be manufactured during the following calendar year." It then sets an Aggregate Production Quota (APQ) to "determine the annual quantities of controlled substances…available for national medical, scientific, and industrial use."
The Wall Street Journal reported today that even though the FDA only announced the shortage this week, "manufacturers and retailers have been signaling for months" that it was becoming harder and harder to fill Adderall prescriptions. Bloomberg reported in early August that "packaging capacity constraints" at a Teva factory were causing Adderall supply disruptions. Last month, NPR reported that a "labor shortage" was the culprit.
Despite the shortage, the DEA has indicated that it does not intend to raise the limit next year.
The persistent supply chain issues may genuinely have been the cause of the shortage. But it's worth contemplating whether there would have been an issue at all if the DEA didn't intentionally constrain the supply of Adderall that can even be produced. Teva and the other drug manufacturers know their own potential output best, and they're also better equipped to plan for any externalities like labor or packaging disruptions.
In fact, a Teva spokesperson mentioned DEA quotas as a contributing factor in the continuing shortage. In 2011, Shire similarly charged that the DEA caused shortages by not approving supply increases in a timely manner.
If untreated, ADHD can cause a child to fall behind in school, and adults' job performance may suffer.
Adderall is indeed ripe for abuse: In its 2021 APQ proposal, the DEA said that "approximately 5-10 percent of high school students and 5-35 percent of college students" use the drug without a prescription. But as with any controlled substance, limiting the supply does not remove demand; users simply look elsewhere, including more unsavory sources. Earlier this year, Ohio State University warned that two students died after ingesting counterfeit Adderall that contained fentanyl.

Supply and demand goes out the window when it comes to the FDAs controlled substances. But the terminology used here I believe is questionable.
Unsavory sources are mentioned – it is just the opposite! Anyone selling this stuff (legal or otherwise) is going to be rolling in the gravy. That sounds more like savory...

I think this does a lot to highlight the older concern that we may be overdrugging our kids. I have no issue with complaining about the government regulating this drug too much, but that paragraph doesn't lead me to the rest of the argument.
No, just get more pills, and make them more widely available. And free, provided by the taxpayer. Freedom!
“Hey where is Jackie? I’ve forgotten where she is since they stopped giving me that stuff, I think.”
You’re not going to let that die, are you?
Unless someone can finally tell me where Jackie is, I will remain determined.
Admittedly, it’s a grave matter.
I think it is unquestionable that children and young adults are over drugged and over prescribed. Nothing is more abused than Adderall. But opioids bleat the mindless sheep
"The pharmaceutical stimulant is prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurological disorder that inhibits focus in children and adults alike."
. . . is prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an excuse for teachers use to drug kids into compliance.
Perhaps if there wasn't so much pressure to force women into the workforce for "optics", the kids would be at home with a loving mother.
you're saying hyper kids should be homeschooled?
I think that the problem is rather that the female teachers prefer dealing with girls, instead of boys who want to run around a lot. The better approach for many boys is letting them exhaust themselves with physical exertion, and they will sit down just fine. Like giving them back recesses.
When I was growing up kids just couldn't pay attention. This was particularly true of boys. In fact in some cases there was a deficit in their ability to pay attention. The standard by which this deficit was measured was never published but the cure for this disease was dispensed by experts in the field, moms and dads. Sometimes a simple "straighten up and fly right!" was sufficient. Sometimes a day or 2 without dessert was required. In more extreme cases days or weeks without access to Rocky and Bullwinkle might be prescribed. Sadly we did not have access to Zoom in those days so parents day to day had no idea how diseased the kids were. Until parent teacher conference. Then all of your fuck ups were fully revealed. There were stern lectures and predictions of ultimate failure should you by some miracle ultimately reach adulthood. Somehow the species survived.
Seriously. Here we have libertarians advocating for drugging kids and snowflake adults because Top Men have decided that if you can't get your shit together you have a disease. When my son was in elementary school 25 years ago easily half of his male friends were on Ritalin. These are the people in charge now. And they never had an opportunity to get their shit together. The less adderall in the world the better as far as I can see.
+1,000,000,000
Yes we know.
Mental illness is imaginary.
Just "tough it out" and everything will work out just fine. Just like in the 1950's.
When I was in middle school in the early 1980s, there was maybe one or two kids in a class of 25 with ADHD, or the spazs as we used to call them. Now it’s half the class. Something has changed in the past 25 years or so.
Oh look, the fat obese mentally ill retard is going to lecture people on health issues. Must have been hard not to paint Gaear Grimsrud as Trump supporter for his wrong think.
“Sadly we did not have access to Zoom in those days…”
Speak for yourself!!!!

I stand corrected.
GG, I have to agree = When my son was in elementary school 25 years ago easily half of his male friends were on Ritalin. These are the people in charge now. And they never had an opportunity to get their shit together. The less adderall in the world the better as far as I can see.
I have a similar life observation, let me explain. I had a step-sibling who took adderall during his elementary school years. It is now 40 years later (yeah, I dated myself). He has never been able to hold a job consistently, lives at home (at age 50), has no girlfriend (or any significant other), and his future SSA benefit is awfully damned low (less than 1K monthly). It is tragic. I mean, he never realized his potential in life. I am 100% convinced that adderall did not help matters; quite the opposite, in fact. It took away his vitality, dulled his inner spirit, quashed his potential.
I am relating this personal life experience to you, and honestly, it makes me want to cry when I think about how lonely and isolated his life has been. I am certain there are theoretically appropriate cases for the use of adderall; but at the same time, I am firmly convinced that we (American society) are over-medicating our children. And Ritalin (adderall) is definitely a part of the problem; the long term effects are devastating.
You're right: We have a 'medicated' generation running things. You made a great point about that. Scary as hell. And tragic.
Adderal is a mixture of amphetamines.
It is a drug with an extremely high potential for abuse.
You think meth is destroying rural America?
Just let them make as much adderal as they want.
With diversion toward illicit use.
I know Reason and Libertarians want completely free drug use, no limitations.
But amphetamines are another level of toxic beyond narcotics.
I have to say that drugs are a conundrum.
Maximum freedom is indeed a good thing.
But putting millions of kids on amphetamines will have negative consequences
Isn't it possible to have freedom for adults to use amphetamines without forcing it on their children?
If we cut a dick off an 18 year old, what's wrong with doing it to a 13 year old?
Who is FORCING adderall on anyone?
They might not force, as in shove the pills down the kid’s throat, but they will definitely steer you in that direction. When my son was acting out in first grade, the first question they asked was if he had been diagnosed with adhd by the Pediatrician. They decide an adderall Rx based on academic performance, by since he was doing B work, that didn’t cut it with our doc. The school kept asking when he was starting his meds. We switched him to a more structured Christian school and there were no more complaints.
Parents.
Female education professionals.
We can give adults the freedom to abuse amphetamines as soon as we let them die from amphetamines without government help and give other adults the right to remove drug addicts and their encampments from their cities.
As long as the legal, social, and public insurance systems are burdened by the cost of drug addition, drugs will remain illegal.
I was diagnosed with adult ADHD and prescribed adderall about 10 years ago. It actually made it worse for me, greatly increasing anxiety and also cutting circulation to my hands and feet which actually turned purple. So I stopped and made sure I took time to run or exercise twice a day, also get more sleep. So far, this has worked pretty well for me.

I blame the government for getting generations of kids hooked on drugs in the first place. ADHD should be treated behaviorally, not by turning kids into drug users.
There was a movie, ‘To Sir With Love’. Drugging kids is about job creation and money.
I am making $35 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $9,000 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.

Once again, innocents pay the price for the war on drugs.
Remind me why we make the truly sick risk going without the drugs they need so that we can be sure the wrong people don't get their hands on any?
(Yes, I know the FDA and the DEA and everyone else insists that the truly sick are never impacted by the war on drugs but we never call them out on these transparent lies.)
It's simply immoral to punish the innocent for the (potential) behavior of the, well, call them "less innocent" (how much less depends on how bad you think drug abuse is). And yet, here we are.
This is a crazy world.
Innocents are getting addicted to amphetamines courtesy of public schools and government health programs; that is the real problem.
You write: "Then the sudden shift to Zoom schooling and parents doing double duty as their child's primary instructor revealed symptoms of hyperactivity and inattentiveness that may otherwise have gone unnoticed."

What other "neurological disorders" can be diagnosed by a counselor or social worker?
ADD/ADHD is a totally fake disease. 70%+ of people who take stimulant drugs will perform measurably better at tasks requiring focus, attention, organization, concentration etc. The "medication" is a performance-enhancing drug.
The 2 paths to a diagnosis are exhibiting behavior as children troublesome to an authority or engaging in "drug seeking behavior" as an adolescent or adult. People should be able to choose to take speed (with or without a "medical" diagnosis) but they probably shouldn't.
Ij don't know that that's totally true, but mostly, yes. There's no clear dividing line here. Authorities are uncomfortable with the lack of one, and will try to see or assert one when there's none there, because we have a thing against use of PEDs by normal people.
There are 2 ways to attack this. One is to debunk ADHD, or at least to cut it down to a much smaller class or persons. The risk there is that the drugs just become harder to legally obtain, and we reinforce the idea that you need excuses to take drugs. The other way is to accept PEDs for what they are and welcome them, just as we welcome other technologies that improve life for the average person.
You shouldn’t need excuses to take drugs, but you should be fully responsible for the consequences: loss of income, loss of home, poor health, lack of retirement savings, etc.
ADD/ADHD is a totally fake disease.
I agree. But thank god they found a cure for restless leg syndrome.
My experience as a mental health nurse, gave me a great deal of experience working with children on drugs like Adderall. It didn’t make children behave, cure the abuse/neglect they had experienced, lack of discipline from their parents, or make them less overstimulated from too much screen time. These children have chemical imbalances of the brain they tell parents, (but they can’t prove it or measure it.
The violent brain damaged meth addict males living on city streets are a consequence of legal gateway behavioral drugs, prescribed like candy, to children.
So many horrible parents and fatherless kids. It’s a damn shame.
Lancaster's failure to identify the drug he discusses suggests he may be suffering from the dread ADHD syndrome:
Amphetamine Denial Hyperbole Disease
Here’s my new plan: just assume everyone and every agency and every corporation has bad intentions. There. No more outrage. No more disappointment. Expect foul play, conspiracies, selfishness, and corruption. Embrace it. Do your part to hasten the end to this virus called life. We’re all just a bunch of faggots fucking each other in the ass. The universe is better off without us.
Why is it that no other news item on this issue talks about the DEA limits on production, and their refusal to raise those limits despite a shortage (Except Reason)? Dextroamphetamine is prescribed for ADHD, Narcolepsy, and sometimes appetite control and major depression, and god knows what other off-label uses. I know everyone is just trying to save the world, but it is a little offensive from a consumer's perspective to listen to groups of people getting together and talking about who needs how much of a particular substance. We are individuals. We should not require some sort of mental affliction in order receive a legal prescription from a reputable doctor who can document what is going on, and watching for any signs of abuse. Why do I take it? That's between myself and my doctor.
I think that the FDA is doing even worse for narcotics utilized for acute and chronic pain. My wife normally has some problems with her chronic pain meds. But things got far worse after major back surgery maybe a month ago. Couldn’t get her prescriptions filled any where near her surgeon’s office. It is, unsurprisingly, near several hospitals. The pharmacies around there all had FDA quotas for pain meds, and they weren’t about to waste vital quota slots on new patients with acute post surgical pain. Finally we went back to the hospital pharmacy across town in the hospital where the surgery was performed to get the prescriptions filled. Every time we got it filled there, I had to give them the surgery date and name of surgeon, before they would fill it.
Blame BIDEN'S Government for the Adderall Shortage
We never had these shortages before Biden was President. Give credit where credit is due. Biden's American where everything is a shortage except stupidity.
Google "Adderall shortage 2011" which predated Biden Presidency.
That is exactly my point. They blamed Trump for everything, and continue to blame Trump for Biden’s screw ups. So now we should in fairness blame Biden for everything and Biden for the next presidents screw ups. Just in for political fairness.
Remember no matter when problem started it is now
“Biden’s America”
What is amazing is how often we heard the phrase every time something was wrong under Trump even if the problem started under Obama, Bush or even Clinton, but never hear it when it is Biden’s fault. Now it is all Biden's fault regardless, if there is a problem Biden should solve it.
An amphetamine shortage! How will the addicts ever cope!
I found a solution, just find Adderall on the street in an open air drug market.
"San Francisco 'Woke' Policies Turned City Into Open Drug Market"
Democratic Mayor London Breed said during a press conference on the issue Oct. 5 that the "open-air" drug dealing is destroying the city.

Adderall isn't good for us unless your have a legitimate prescription. The government has a right and in fact an obligation to restrict the amount of dangerous drugs produced to reduce prescribing. People who use Adderall without a prescription need to be arrested and given SEVERE punishment.
Had the Reason writer looked deeper in the the subject (as fucking if) he might have noticed the strange coincidence that there are multiple other new brand name only stimulants currently hitting the market just as this ‘shortage’ is occurring.
Including the return of Benzedrine (racemic amphetamine), now branded as Evekeo ODT.
Strange that.
Here are some of the others:
Mydayis
Adzerys ER ODT
Dyanavel XR
Jornay PM
Azstarys
While Adderall can be abused, it also is a lifesaver. I have a child with the real-deal ADHD with dyslexia and dyscalculia - verified with neuropsychological and neurological testing, (not covered by insurance by the way). We tried everything prior to going a medication route, including dietary, neurofeedback, special schools. And even with medication, our child didn't like the side effects (also have a non-ADHD child who is doing great). Having worked in substance abuse field, I am well aware of the dangers and was loathe to try it on my child.
Adderall turned out to be the key to positive change for my child - it has been truly a gift.
For those who think ADHD doesn't exist or that the kid just needs more discipline, you are just plain ignorant. It's like saying a depressed person should just lighten up, or a person nearsightedness should just be able to see better. The withholding of this medication is horrifying to me as a parent - to see a kid going from flunking out with horrible self-esteem from being treated differently by both students and some ignorant teachers, to starting to thrive, grades much improved. Then having the possibility of that being pulled out from under him is frightening and heartbreaking. And where I live there is no shortage of illegal substitutes that have been decriminalized and are all too available - walk down the street and there is NO shortage of those!
It's government overreach - they just keep attacking the wrong people. The DEA should spend their time tracking the fentanyl and meth flooding the streets and causing absolutely insanity, not cracking down in ways that punish legitimate users. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get a doctor to prescribe these? I know there are "pill-mill" doctors, but there is a legitimate use for this as a medication. It just another version of the pain pill overreach, where it was a few doctors providing lots more prescriptions than any legit one - pretty easy to crack down on the the ones with an open prescription pad doing no real medical evaluation vs the ones trying to treat actual pain. But overreach is the signature of too many government agencies and I'm not optimistic about change.
