Iran's Hijab Protests Are Part of a Long, Slow Revolution

Protests have been shaking Iranian cities for nearly a dozen nights, sparked by the death of a young women's rights activist in the custody of the country's morality police. The 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, was arrested for wearing her headscarf too loosely while on a family visit to Tehran.

Officially, Amini died of heart failure. But her family (and many, many others) believe she died from injuries sustained as police beat her during and after her arrest on September 13. "She was tortured, according to eyewitnesses," said Amini's cousin, Erfan Mortezaei. "She was tortured in the van after her arrest, then tortured at the police station for half an hour, then hit on her head and she collapsed."

The protests sparked by Amini's death in custody have led to more death, as Iranian security forces have turned violent on protesters. Thirty-five people have reportedly been killed in the protests as of last weekend (which is almost certainly an undercount, as the figure comes from the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting).

"It's the libertarian cliche: don't make a law unless you're willing to kill someone to enforce it," said Reason Editor in Chief Katherine Mangu-Ward during yesterday's Reason Roundtable podcast. In this case, the law Iranian authorities are willing to kill to enforce is a prohibition on women showing their hair. That says a lot.

Young Iranians "don't want this system any more," says Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis. "They want democracy."

"They want a new government… This generation is very, very different from us," she tells me, especially young men's solidarity with women's rights inside Iran. pic.twitter.com/Q5EXpwqJ8K

— Christiane Amanpour (@amanpour) September 26, 2022

But the current protests are about much more than Amini's death and Iranian women being forced to wear hijabs. Samira Mohyeddin, a Canadian journalist born in Tehran, told Slate:

Most of the people protesting are young….This generation had nothing to do with bringing the Islamic Republic to power. That's something their parents' generation did. So, they're like, "We don't want this. We didn't ask for this." It's obvious from their chants. It's not, "Where is my vote?" or "End the veil." Their chants are "Death to the dictator," "Clerics get lost," "We don't want an Islamic Republic." There are videos of hand-to-hand skirmishes between protestors and Iranian riot police holding tasers, guns, batons, and protestors are coming right at them. This is unprecedented. We haven't seen this level of fury and fearlessness. People are angry, and it's moved beyond the morality police and Mahsa Amini. Mahsa was the spark, but it's moved way beyond that at this point.

At least 1,200 Iranian protesters have been arrested, the state-backed news agency Tasmin said on Saturday.

Information coming out of Iran has been spotty, since the country's leaders disrupted internet access, blocking it entirely in some areas and blocking certain social media platforms in others, according to NetBlocks.

Elon Musk is responding by activating Starlink internet access in Iran, though the hardware required for it—and absent there—may mean Musk's efforts are futile.

At The Bulwark, Shay Khatiri offers a good analysis of how this protest movement fits into Iranian (and U.S.) history:

It was around this time of the year in 1978 that, thanks to the brutality of the shah's security guards, mass protests devolved into a cycle of violence that would give rise to the current regime. The coalition of dissent was split among the Communists, the nationalists, and the Islamists. But only the last group had a charismatic leader to offer, so the rest had to fall in line behind him. It helped that American and European media promoted Ruhollah Khomeini as a liberal democrat. Within months, the shah had fled his country forever, and Khomeini would be Iran's ruler.

Although this event is commonly called the "Iranian Revolution," it was anything but Iranian. Khomeini had condemned Iran's national traditions as a divergence from Islam. The revolution of 1979 was Islamist—sacrificing national character on the altar of religious identity—and it established an Islamist regime. More precisely, it was an anti-Iranian Islamist revolution, and it led to an anti-Iranian Islamist non-hereditary monarchy.

It was this Islamist regime that instituted a dress code that included women wearing a hijab. It was one of many moves to dictate what women could wear and do and to deny women full rights.

Protests have broken out many times since then, and have been especially frequent since 2017. Iranian lawyer Artoniss Ehsani called the current protests part of a "slow revolution." But others are skeptical:

I've heard the same predictions multiple times in my life. Hope it's true this time. https://t.co/W1fvpbpTRL

In yesterday's Reason Roundtable, Editor at Large Nick Gillespie suggested that the Iranian people would have overthrown the dictatorial government long ago if the U.S. hadn't invaded Iraq and destabilized the region.

The best thing the U.S. government can do now is probably to welcome more Iranian refugees.

Kind reminder: Any Western politician expressing support for Iranians, whilst simultaneously building borders to keep out Iranian refugees, is not in the business of human rights but is in the business of regime change & destabilisation of the Middle East.

We should immediately expedite all asylum requests from Iran, Russia, Ukraine, Yemen, and anywhere there is an active war zone or uprising against tyranny.

We should be the most welcoming nation to those seeking asylum. We should be a lamp of liberty to the world.

A bevy of bad economic indicators. Companies are cutting jobs, the lowering of gas prices has stalled, and "and a long-simmering national housing shortage may be catching up with us," writes Jim Geraghty at National Review. For example:

Meta—you know, Facebook—plans "to cut expenses by at least 10 percent in the coming months, in part through staff reductions." Google is eyeing similar cuts, with CEO Sundar Pichai characterizing it as "being a bit more responsible through one of the toughest macroeconomic conditions underway in the past decade." Twilio has announced plans to lay off 11 percent if its workforce, and Snap has announced plans to lay off 20 percent of its workforce.

A lot of big companies, even outside the tech sector, are announcing the elimination of executive positions. The Gap is eliminating 500 corporate jobs. Boeing has announced that it will eliminate about 150 positions in finance and accounting in October. Last month, Walmart announced that it would eliminate 200 corporate jobs.

FedEx is enacting a hiring freeze and closing more than 90 FedEx Office locations.

It's not just big brand companies: It's also an ice-cream plant in New York; it's also a slew of hospitals nationwide. God help you if you work in real estate: "Some of the biggest players in the real estate industry, including RE/MAX, Redfin and Wells Fargo, have announced layoffs in recent months totaling thousands of jobs. Industry analysts are projecting the cuts could eventually be on par with what was seen during the housing crash of 2008."

More bad news here, if you can stomach it.

• An Oregon rape victim was held in jail for nine days to ensure that she would show up to testify against her rapist.

• Italy has elected right-wing populist Giorgia Meloni as its next prime minister. Meloni—who represents a political party called the Brothers of Italy—"is poised to lead Italy's first far-right-led government since World War II," notes the Associated Press.

It's striking that twice in this short clip Meloni stretches to blame "financial speculators" for scheming purposefully to inflict societal ills you might think were remote from financial markets as such. That's a rhetorical theme with a history we should recognize. https://t.co/4AdBgQbCVu

An Oregon rape victim was held in jail for nine days to ensure that she would show up to testify against her rapist.

    Prosecutors want their conviction.

    1. Social Justice is neither   3 years ago

Is she really a victim of anything if she has to be incarcerated for testimony? Or is this Reason deliberately misreporting protective custody or incarceration for something unrelated for a clickbait lead?

      1. GraniteLiberty303   3 years ago

According to the article Reason cited:

"Her lawyer, Donald Scales, acknowledged there were "legitimate concerns" about whether his client would show up to testify.

The 20-year-old woman was held for nine days beginning Sept. 6 with a bail set at $500,000 — an amount Scales described as "unattainable."

"They were not affirmatively recommending jail," he said. "They essentially were saying to the judge that they did not have any confidence in her making it to court and it would still be a struggle" for them to supervise her.

"This was really a last resort balancing the needs of the victim and the needs of the community to have this case resolved," he said.

Scales said he asked for less restrictive measures, including an ankle monitor and a commitment from her mother and older sister that they would keep "line of sight" on her, he said.

"The court felt it wouldn't be sufficient," Scales said, noting that the judge sided with the district attorney's office."

Not sure why an ankle monitor wouldn't have been sufficient. Or sending someone to her home to retrieve her for her testimony. I personally think it's an overreach.

Mussolini was a member of the socialist party for 12 years. He firmed the fascist party to save socialism in his own words. His party platform waas very similar to the current DNC platforms, authoritarianism by control of elites. Most left leaning papers praised him including the NYT.

This is another example of the religion of the left where they use historical revisionism to push bad outcomes as coming from the right.

There's really nothing far-right about any of the parties which made gains in these elections, such as Italy and Sweden. The media are simply freaking out about them because they aren't rim-jobbers to the globalists like the socialist left parties.

or exactly what right-wing is supposed to mean in Europe?

        1. Zeb   3 years ago

That's an important one too. Even if one can argue that fascists or Nazi's are in part properly called right-wing in a European context (I think that is somewhat reasonable in the case of Nazis, less so for Italian Fascists), it bears no resemblance to the American right and is a whole lot closer to American progressivism.

EU Commission President Threatens Italy On Eve Of Election, Says Brussels Has 'Tools' If Wrong Parties Win

Von der Leyen added that those same tools are already being used against Hungary and Poland.

“We will see the result of the vote in Italy,” said von der Leyen.

“If things go in a difficult direction — and I’ve spoken about Hungary and Poland — we have the tools.”

Von der Leyen made the comment after a journalist at Princeton University in the United States said that there were candidates in the Italian elections “close to Putin” and asked her how the EU would react if they were elected.

But somehow they're not the fascists, it's the other guys.

        1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

I've come to learn that the modern world -- especially here at Reason -- sees self interest as far right, fascist, and any other pejorative.

It started with equating nationalism with racism like it was a century ago. Anyone who was America first was a "white nationalist" and that was the same as the grand dragon wizard of the KKK or some shit.

          But now it's everyone, everywhere.

I heard an interview on NPR some years ago about punk rock and playing for skinheads in England, but they didn't call them skinheads, they called them White Nationalists.

Hungary? Ultra far right evil racist nationalist so evil you shouldn't even listen to him. Italy? Farthest right since Mussolini. You cannot say "maybe if we look after our best interests first" without invoking Godwin's law, except in real life.

For fuck's sake, Italy is bearing the brunt of massive illegal immigration from across the Med, even if several refugee crises in Eastern Europe have gotten a lot more press. They are having cultural and economic come to Jesus moments over and over, and the economy isn't like it was 15 years ago, so they're doing national soul searching. They have their problems, and they are feeling it. Sometimes you change because you don't like the power base right now. Just to shake up the system.

Whether or not this is the "right" choice is, to me, a really big case of none of my goddamned business. Let the Italians do Italy and they'll figure it out. At least as well as they ever do. It's not the 20th century anymore.

Libertarian publications should understand the concept of you do you.

It's getting to a point where there's going to have to be a full-on dissolution of the FBI.

Seriously, was there ever a "terrorist attack" that these malbushim stopped in the last 25-odd years which they weren't already provoking from the beginning? Anyone notice how the mass shootings outside of the ghetto this year suddenly stopped when one of their crisis actors got ventilated by a corn-fed Indiana boy exercising his constitutional rights?

      1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

The FBI has been corrupt since Hoover took it over. It operated as Hoover's personal blackmail team for decades. Both Johnson and Kennedy used it to spy on their political opponents. The FBI should have been dissolved and replaced by a new organization after Watergate. The fact that it wasn't just caused the FBI to reasonably conclude it was untouchable and get even worse.

I don't believe there is any way to reform it. There is an alphebet soup of federal law enforcement agencies who are ready willing and able to take over the responsibilities currently served by the FBI. I would be very easy to eliminate the entire organization. Doing so would not only be justice being served for once in Washington, it would serve as an example and deterrent to every other agency in Washington that yes your agency can be eliminated if you piss enough people on one side off.

His name was Elisjsha Dicken and he has yet to be recognized by the Biden Administration. Just like Jake Ryker, the 17 year old kid who stopped the shooting at Thurston High in Springfield, OR in 1998 was never recognized by a Democrat President. The man is a certified fucking hero, but very few people remember his name. Why? Because he mentioned that his training at handling firearms was what led him to charge the gunman when the rifle misfired. Because he was well informed enough to jam his hand into the striker and prevent the pistol from firing and killing him when he got close. Because he was an Eagle Scout. Because he married and had 2 kids with the girl whose life he saved that day after they were both shot. Because he became a police officer.

Very few people remember Jake Ryker or Elisjsha Dicken because they don't fit the narrative. They refused to be victims.

Forcing kids to take that vaccine was a crime against humanity. The vaccine should have been given to people over 60 and who were at risk for whatever health reasons. For those people, the risk of getting COVID outweighed the risk of the vaccine. For everyone else and especially children, it wasn't even close. There will of course never be any accountability for this beyond Hell being a very crowded place.

      1. ElvisIsReal   3 years ago

Yep. The rush to get kids vaccinated should have ended the minute that Big Pharma said "Kids aren't really at risk of covid, so we're measuring antibodies to determine VE".

If kids aren't at risk of covid (they aren't), there's no reward for jabbing them -- only actual risk.

        1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

I'd almost -- almost -- argue that differently.

We always knew kids weren't at risk -- something that I think we could agree upon by the time vaccines were available. But for OG Covid where the mrna vaccines were remarkably effective there was a notion of achieving herd immunity.

Delta evaded the vaccine well enough that it was transmissible again. THAT is the point where there was no doubt. You run out of arguments because herd immunity is impossible, so even the most collectivist anywhere cannot say "you need to get everyone to take it for the good of society" because, well, Delta's evasion made that moot.

Personally, I think vaccines are good where they're good. Do a risk analysis, if the benefits outweigh the risks, have your vaccine.

But collectivist's arguments have been mooted since August last year, yet they kept at it. It became religious at that point. Or face saving, we can't admit we were wrong. Or political, if we admit universal vaccination is not needed people will think we're MAGA racists white nationalist klan members. Though, honestly, I no longer see the difference between the three.

          1. ElvisIsReal   3 years ago (edited)

The vaccines never stopped transmissions. The data always showed it and we always said that the data always showed it.

Now Brix says that she always knew it, yet she was gung-ho for the mandates…….

            1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

              Brix is full of shit.

They're all full of shit. If they knew anything they were wrong at best, antisocial psychopaths at worst.

And if they'd just have admitted they were wrong as evidence mounted, instead of trying to save face by sticking to their guns, they might still have a shred of credibility. They could have tailored their response appropriately and gotten happy cooperation.

But, no. Had to make it a holy war. It is dogma. Have to be absolute, have to demonize anyone who isn't 100% on board. All because of some ridiculous notion that you can never admit a mistake or give ground in modern politics without looking weak.

If there are two opposing anti-libertarian things occurring, it might be prudent to go with the less vile option.

        1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   3 years ago

Millennials both lack the ability to perceive nuance and believe that hedonism is freedom. Teachers and professors are to blame.

        2. Quicktown Brix   3 years ago

By the 2 opposing anti-libertarian things, I assume you mean:
1: The feds telling corporations what/who to silence
2: The feds telling corporations to to silence no one or nothing.

Agree that option 2 is less vile, but I disagree that there are only 2 options.

I think the principled libertarian thing to do is to make it illegal for the government to order or influence corporations. Still, as JesseAz above pointed out, corporation and individual freedom are in competition. One of my biggest doubts about pure libertarianism is how corporations could suppress individuals. But, overall I think we need to move drastically in the direction of libertarianism and I don't make an exception here.

          1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

The problem is that it is already kind of sort of illegal for governments to order corporations to censor people. But as we've already seen they're doing exactly that.
In practice the Texas law prevents the federal and various state governments from censoring via corporate fronts, at least in Texas.

I view this law as chemotherapy. It's slightly poisonous but the cancer is far more deadly.

            1. Quicktown Brix   3 years ago

I know that the chemotherapy is the more practical and likely to succeed short term solution. My concern is the slippery slope of allowing internet speech regulation; how this new power will be used and how it will justify further regulations in the long term.

Back when trades had to be fully executed, there was speculation and risk. Today trades are initiated by computers at the speed of light and can be bought and then resold before the ownership is even registered. For something to be qualified as 'speculation' requires time to have passed. A lot of what we see today is just direct market manipulation.

The amazing thing is that a politician would address it.

And as long they are playing only with their own money, aren't "financial speculators" people too, whack-a-doo, whack-a-doo, whack-a-doo?

It's the "identity" thing and the lack of specifics about "financial speculators" that's throwing people such as myself.

Brandt admitted he ran the kid down for a reason that is deranged far beyond any angry drunken misunderstanding and has since shown no remorse.

He told a judge that he disagreed with the bail amount, stating that he is not a flight risk and has a life that he needs to get back to.

"I have a job, a life and a house and things that I don't exactly want to see go by the wayside — family that are very important to me," Brandt said.

The kid was actively fleeing from Brandt and called his mother as he was hunted down. Why would he be released at all? You can bet that in Bumfuck, ND the police are going to have to spend resources to keep him from getting murdered. Hell, I am sure people have volunteered to come from out of state to do it.

The Proggies screamed there was malice aforethought and wanted 1st degree murder for Derek Chauvin and Kyle Rittenhouse. Where do you think they stand on Brandt?

    Red love, for all

Family is a terrible way to satisfy our desire for love and care. The solution? Abolish it.

I like cooking for family, from sandwiches to elaborate dinners I'm the preparer of most meals. I also enjoy looking after my nieces and nephews. Maybe because I have an average person's generosity of spirit, familial affection and I'm not a narcissistic piece of shit.

It never occurs to these creepy leftist social engineers that their dysfunctional families and childhoods aren't the norm and that they're the outliers.

    1. Cronut   3 years ago

They're also usually sexless harpies whose biological clock is ticking but they don't want the responsibility of actually bearing and raising their own children, so they're going to demand that society fix that problem for them.

      And this delightful nugget:

"The hard work of care – looking after children, cooking and cleaning – is hidden away and devalued, performed for free by women..."

      It's hardly "performed for free."

Their solution is to only care about their own desires and needs, never lift a finger to care for others, and ignore the suffering and problems of men. The things they routinely claim as proving the moral superiority of women--their empathy, selflessness, compassion, and willingness to care for others--are also what they are most anxious to discard.

God, that whole article is a case study in left-wing utopian self-indulgence. She kicks it off by lauding the Fourier communes, notably leaving out the fact that none of them survived because of their complete inability to function as stable enterprises. They actually show the folly of what a society run under direct democracy will result in.

And of course, these movements she cites in the article all formed under the framework of marxist utopianism.

This is the most telling statement here:

Lewis is clear-eyed and witty about the inevitable knee-jerk reaction to calls for family abolition. (“So! The left is trying to take grandma away, now, and confiscate the kids, and this is supposed to be progressive? What the fuck?”) And it’s true that family abolition, like other abolitionist movements, presents certain discomforts. Maybe you love your family! Or maybe you just like cooking in your own kitchen. Lewis acknowledges these discomforts, and asks us to imagine beyond them.

No, she's definitely not "asking." She's demanding, primarily because she hates her own family and will never be in an emotionally fufilling relationship. I'm certain this is why so many of them own pets, because animals don't actually have opinions on anything and will never disagree with these solipsists.

Society really doesn't need to suffer for the daddy issues of these ugly-ass, unloveable women.

I think I've found where Reason writers hang out.

Go look at his Socrates section

To put that in a modern context, picture if America’s 1%, led by radical devotees of Ayn Rand, carried a coup backed by China or Russia, and overthrew the US government. Then they installed a radical libertarian government, and rolled rights back to the days when only the propertied upper class got to vote. To cow the population into submission, they then sent out death squads that killed about sixteen million Americans – 5% of the country’s 2022 population.

Imagine if Americans rose up in revolt to overthrew a radical libertarian regime of Ayn Rand devotees that had killed sixteen million of their fellow citizens. If Ayn Rand was still alive, even if she had not personally killed anybody, she would probably not fare well.

How anyone could think Ayn Rand or libertarians would cooperate with Russia and China in a coup is beyond me.

I've never encountered this kind of ignorance before except in wokists like Tony. The rest of his history on this page seemed ok, but when I ran into this crap, it made me wonder. How do seemingly serious people get this misled?

It starts out by conflating different types of peasantry and then move on to ignoring 'paid' and 'unpaid' work - and the comparing only paid work when in reality while 'paid' work hours has increased, unpaid work (basically chores - cleaning house, cooking, yard work, home maintenance, shopping, etc) have greatly decreased.

So we do more work outside the home nowadays but lot less inside of it. In ye olden days it would have been like 1:2 hours in the field compared to in the home while today it's reversed.

This has all been debunked years ago and anyone who thinks that peasants worked fewer hours is an idiot.

JAMIE RASKIN (D-MD): Ray Epps is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful MAGA-head I have ever known in my entire life.

"We're going to throw the book at you all, except this one guy here who was leading everyone, because reasons. But don't you dare suspect he was an FBI provocateur"

    1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   3 years ago

Nope, nothing suspicious about that. Stop asking questions, peasant.

    2. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

Epps is literally on tape telling people to storm the Capitol. Yet, somehow Mr. January 6th was worse than 9-11 loves the guy. I mean it is almost like Epps was an agent provocateur and the whole thing just a false flag operation or something.

suggested that the Iranian people would have overthrown the dictatorial government long ago if the U.S. hadn't invaded Iraq and destabilized the region.

And Nick Gillespie would be flat wrong.

    1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago (edited)

Whatever the criticisms of the US invasion of Iraq, saying it prevented a revolution in Iran has to be the dumbest one I have ever heard. How does the gay Fonzi even think that would happen? The US destabilizing Iraq caused Iran to intervene spending billions of dollars and a few thousand lives trying to influence the place. The Iranian people have no more desire to make Iraq a satellite state than the American people do. If anything, the invasion of Iraq, by causing the Mullahs to get involved so heavily, has made the Iranian government more unpopular and more likely to be overthrown.

If you want to know what is preventing a revolution in Iran, the biggest reason is they can still pay their security apparatus. The main reason they can do that is the hundreds of billions of dollars Obama gave them as part of the JCPOA. Take that away and the Iranian government may have fallen already.

And Joe Biden is begging the Iranians to take American money in return for meaningless promises about nuclear weapons right now as we speak. Biden will if he can, ensure that the Iranian government can pay its security forces to murder and oppress the Iranian people for another ten years. Joe cares like that you know.

      1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   3 years ago

Wasn't there an almost-revolution back in 2009/2010? I recall Barry quietly ignoring that, too.

        1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

There was. And Obama did nothing to support it. The Left loves the Mullahs and loves radical Muslims. They are natural allies. Obama and Biden both see Iran as an ally and Israel as the enemy.

      3. Hank Ferrous   3 years ago

When all the information that one will accept is from left-leaning sources, it shows. Gillespie may favor individual liberties, but many of his viewpoints and opinions are strictly leftist/progressive. It is obvious each time he makes an ignorant claim like this.

      4. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   3 years ago

SPB will be along shortly to inform you that the pallets of cash Obama delivered to the Iranians was their money that we were holding illegally, despite what Clinton had said it was. And that it definitely did not get looted by the military and politicians. It probably went to buy baby formula and condoms to hand out to teens.

With no coherence or support from his troops, Putin cannot possibly carry out his war and win. The only and question is when and how he will be defeated.

Here I was thinking the populist revolt was over. After all, the neoliberal elites said it was. They pronounce populism dead every six months or so – seemingly convinced that one election result or external event has finally finished it off for good. Covid was supposed to kill populism, by reminding the supposedly ignorant oiks of the importance of experts. Then Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was supposed to kill populism, by reminding ‘nativist’ voters of the importance of international cooperation and the folly of authoritarian strongmen – something they are supposedly enamoured of. And yet those pesky voters just keep on electing the ‘wrong’ governments. If the triumph of the Sweden Democrats in supposedly sensible Sweden earlier this month wasn’t symbolic enough, Italy has just made the right-wing, anti-immigration Brothers of Italy the largest party, paving the way for what the media breathlessly call the ‘most right-wing government since Mussolini’.

      1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

The establishment has screwed everything up to the point that populations are no longer going to tolerate it. We live in very interesting times. As the song says, "you better start swimming or you will sink like a stone".

Hey Peanuts - for all you in a perpetual state of bewilderment concerning the "far right" label properly given to fascists check out the Wall St Journal:

Brazil’s Right-Wing Leader Spends on Poor Before Elections
Trailing in polls ahead of October’s vote, President Jair Bolsonaro is giving out cash and land titles as he campaigns against his leftist rival

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/brazils-right-wing-leader-spends-on-poor-before-elections-11664025028

Like Trump he is spending to buy an election.

And this is the great part:

Ahead of the first round of voting on Sunday, baseless accusations of electoral fraud are circulating on social media, and President Jair Bolsonaro is laying the groundwork to contest the results — echoing Donald Trump's claims of a stolen election. For many, it raises fears that Brazil is being engulfed by its own internet-fueled "big lie."

    https://www.npr.org/2022/09/27/1124835910/2022-brazil-election-presidential-disinformation

Bolsonaro has baselessly alleged that Brazil's elections are rigged, that electronic voting machines can't be trusted, and that polls that show him trailing his rival, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, can't be believed.
Those claims are finding fertile ground online, with posts claiming electronic votes can't be verified and smearing polling agencies gaining traction, said Natália Leal, CEO of fact-checker Lupa.

    That makes sense.

The Iranian protest is irrelevant. Why? Because, at the end of the day, it's just undirected rage, people lashing out and destroying what is near to them.

They'll tire themselves out, the regime will capture and kill some to make an example of them. The others, their rage spent, will cower and submit.

And it all goes back to normal.

Everyone knows that if you want to fabricate overwhelming support for your narrative, 98% is the magic number. Perhaps the voters are pragmatic and don't care as much about which assholes are in charge as they do about their homes not being reduced to rubble. Its not like they won't need to pay for protection from the local tough guys regardless of their nationality. It matters slightly more to the tough guys who have to bribe a whole new set of political officers. They must be the 4% in opposition.

That is the reality for those who live in the taint of Eastern Europe. One side pisses on your doorstep, the other shits on your back porch. Both options reek.
