In Purported Global First, Dutch City Bans Meat Ads
Haarlem lawmakers claim the ban will help fight climate change.

Earlier this month, reports indicated that Haarlem, The Netherlands, had become the first city in the world to ban advertisements for meat and meat products from appearing in public spaces such as buses. The city says it adopted the ban, which will take effect in 2024, to reduce meat consumption and combat climate change.
The ban made news around the world, with some outlets suggesting this global first could or should herald similar bans in other countries.
Councilor Ziggy Klazes, the local councilmember who drafted the ban, acknowledged stern opposition. "Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision outrageous and patronising, but there are also a lot of people who think it's fine," Klazes said in remarks reported by The Guardian. "It is a signal–if it is picked up nationally, that would only be very nice. There are many groups… who think it is a good idea and want to try it."
While Haarlem's ban could herald similar bans, that's not because it should. It's a lousy idea.
The ban is problematic for reasons beyond its attack on free speech—starting with the premise that meat makes some sort of outsized contribution to climate change, a claim that's been challenged. As an NBC News op-ed explained last year, "only about 15 to 18 percent of carbon emissions come from livestock. And that number includes all livestock on the planet as well as the entire process of raising, slaughtering, transporting and eating meat—including the carbon you yourself make while eating and digesting it…. Notably, only a portion of that process involves actual animals. The rest of it is transportation and processes that also produce carbon when growing and consuming vegetables, wheat and practically everything else we eat."
Even if eating meat contributes to climate change and that was somehow a good reason to ban eating or marketing meat—it's not—bans still ignore the fact not all meat has the same carbon footprint. For example, this producer in Manitoba says it's been carbon neutral since 2019. Others—including big American producers—could join that producer if they choose. A white paper published last year by UC-Davis researchers outlined steps the U.S. beef and dairy producers could take to become carbon neutral by 2050.
If the ban itself is dubious, the claim it's the first ban of its type may be as well. In 2017, Australian ad censors reversed course and banned an ad depicting a host of godly figures (including Zeus, Jesus, and L. Ron Hubbard) eating lamb after Hindu protestors complained about the ad's portrayal of Ganesha, a Hindu god (and vegetarian) received "less favourable treatment" in the ad than did the other religious figures.
Some governments have gone beyond banning the marketing of meat and just banned meat itself. For example, some cities in the Indian state of Gujarat last year banned the "preparation and display of non-vegetarian food in public," based on claims that displays of meat led to "traffic jams…. and had a negative impact on people, particularly children."
Calls to ban fast-food marketing—always heavy on meat-centric foods—as here and here, have been around for years and have even become law in places such as Australia. In the United States, ads for meat or any other food are protected by the First Amendment. But even that didn't stop Missouri lawmakers, in 2018, from banning the use of the word "meat" from appearing on any food not made from the flesh of animals.
While I oppose any government prohibitions on meat advertising, I am a staunch supporter of ending government-supported advertising of meat. In the United States, the USDA's beef checkoff program, as I explained in a column last year, is a mandatory, wasteful marketing program that forces farmers and ranchers to participate. I noted the "antiquated, mandatory, collectivist… expensive, pointless, and unconstitutional" marketing scheme forces American farmers and ranchers to spend around $750 million each year on government-approved marketing that may not benefit them (and which many farmers oppose) while raising costs for consumers.
Governments should not be in the business of promoting or restricting meat or any particular diets—including the marketing of such diets—any more than they should be involved in promoting or restricting any religion, hairstyle, or consensual adult relationships. Haarlem's meat-ad ban, despite its supporters claiming it's well-intentioned, is—as its author suggested—both "outrageous and patronising."

starting with the premise that
meat makes some sort of outsized contribution to climate changehumanity, let alone the Western World, is solely responsible for climate change one way or the other.Imagine for a minute that the same people telling you "Humans caused climate change. We are responsible. Science settled. No questions asked." are the same people saying "Nuclear power is wrong and evil and should be opposed at all costs."
I mean, if a guy said to you "I've discovered a comet that's going to hit the Earth and kill everyone, we need to do something now!" and you said, "OK, what?" and he pulled out a slingshot and said, "Help me find a rock." you'd *know* he was full of shit about the comet. But people saying, "Hey, none of these predictions have worked out and the people predicting catastrophe oppose the obvious solution that actually would make life better anyway, maybe the whole thing, soup-to-nuts, is a scam." are the crazy deniers.
Most people don’t actually think about solutions. They express in order to fit in and avoid ostracization. So “global warming is evil and nuclear power is bad but Tesla’s are good until Elon Musk is bad and republicans are evil but democrats are good please please please don’t reject me I have no where else to go and no marketable skills!”
It’s evolutionary: humans are social animals, many do not thrive at all based on their material contributions to society, and rely completely on the sense of social cohesion for their survival, and their thoughts never go past an emotional level of groupthink.
To me, I’m not so sure it’s a scam, as much a good example of how democracy can’t really solve problems: democracy will make global warming go away… any day now.
I will argue that human nature pushes us beyond basic group behavior into religion, and the innate need to codify and embrace beliefs. And then, of course, irrationally defend our chosen religion and do what we can to convert or eliminate non-believers.
IMO, most of the global warming zealots are exactly like all religious idiots since the dawn of our species.

Or nuts? And has anyone actually seen them served together? Where did saying come from, I wonder?
Soup is the first course of a meal. Nuts/cheese is the last. The saying in French is de la potage au fromage. Apparently the English prefer a variety of nuts.
Yeah, my gleaned understanding of the distinction, open to error, is that port and cheese concludes the meal in French and nuts and liquor does in England.

“Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear -- kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor -- with the cry of grave national emergency... "The protester appeared to immediately regret the decision to set fire to himself, and quickly put out the flames with his left hand while a small fire burned on the court next to him. A staff member smothered the on-court fire with a suit jacket while the protester calmly waited to be removed."
I humbly suggest that we should alway encourage and assist idiots with their bad choices. Next time the staff member should rush out and poor fuel on the protestor. Organic, of course.

Both!
I’d prefer more follow through.
Yes.
As tempting as that is with so many stupid movements, it might be a vehicle for arson against whatever the protesters hate. As with fire by itself, it can come back on you.
Tempt them to hunger strike instead. In a world overflowing with food and images of food, it would be exquisite torture for the protesters and exquisite delight for counter-protesters to come out and see them with a turkey leg, corn dog, or ice cream cone in hand. ????

“You gotta say hi to me,” Biden said mid-speech at the National Education Association headquarters in DC. “We go back a long way. She was 12, I was 30. But anyway, this woman helped me get an awful lot done.”

Also;
“Gun violence is on the ballot,” Biden said. “The idea that you start school this year and kids in many parts of the country are learning to duck and cover … rather than talking about reading, writing and arithmetic is a very different circumstance and it’s not right.”
Reading, writing, and arithmetic? Where has Brandon been? The tragedy is that shooter drills take time away from race shaming and transgender lessons.
They used to tell us that if we hid under our desk, we could survive a nuclear blast.
Russian disinformation!
Our local HS (where my oldest attends) had a lockdown 'scare' Friday last week. 22 min. lockdown to all clear, someone brought a BB gun to school, so no one was actually in any real danger. Still, about 20% of the students and 5-10% of the staff took the rest of the day off. Missing out on reading, writing and arithmetic not because of an actual gun or actual danger, but because of the fear that something bad *could* happen a very different circumstance and isn't right either.
Why was it that we never had lock down drills despite every other truck in the parking lot having a gun in a gun rack, perfectly visible?

California is withholding standardized test results until after Election Day
When they’re hiding stuff, it’s not because it’ll make them look good.

This was my favorite story. A high school focused on social justice in California (it isnt happening says jeff!!l)
https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-school-with-social-justice-academy-has-19-math-proficiency
San Leandro High School has a 19% math proficiency rate and 21% science proficiency rate, well below California’s average of 30% proficiency in both math and science, according to U.S. News and World Report. The school’s reading proficiency rate is 57%, also below the state average.
.
The vast majority, 92%, of San Leandro High School’s students are minorities, and about 57% are considered economically disadvantaged.
...
The high school has a graduation rate of about 92%, above the 2019 national average of 86%.
Despite utter failure they still graduate the activists. The students are required to become activists their senior year. Pure indoctrination.
'The curriculum teaches students to “challenge and criticize power, oppression, capitalism, white supremacy, imperialism, colonialism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, cisheteropatriarchy, ableism, and xenophobia on the internal, interpersonal, institutional, and ideological levels.”'
With all that, who has time for addition and subtraction?
Eh, if they can’t do addition and subtraction by their senior year they’re already fucked. Honestly, by my senior year I’d already been accepted to college and spent most of it fucking off anyway.
Public school has made promises it can’t deliver for a century, and now they’re stuck trying to keep impossible promises.
Intelligence is largely genetic: some kids are going to do calculus in middle school, and some kids will never learn fractions before they die. In a society that’s more and more based on intelligence as the primarily valued skill, public education promises they can make anyone intelligent, and solve all social problems. And it’s a lie, and they’ll never do it.
I attribute it to rationalized equality: they assume everyone is equal, and would be equal, except for discriminatory environment, because that gives them the option to blame their own lackluster outcomes on their environment, as well a dream of a day their substandard performance doesn’t matter, and never happens to anyone else! But it’s emotion, not based on fact. It will never come true, and the more they try, the more they prove themselves wrong.
So they’re on plan B: find something else to do with these kids.
And this explains critical theory: they’ve realized they can’t blame substandard performance solely on discrimination, so they declare standards systemically discriminatory. But history rhymes: they’ll spend a few decades proving that, yes, standards have a purpose, and it’s not to keep people down.
It only partly explains CT and similar BS. IMO the bigger driver is ideological, with teachers educated by professors taught by other professors who have a very biased and determined agenda.
And that agenda is usually authoritarian equality.
All SJW crap is explainable by subsidizing science and higher education. It encourages people to keep on going to school past their natural ability, so schools have to find fields that the marginal students can pass. It similarly encourages the creation of sciency fields for the marginal sciencyists.
If higher education and science were not subsidized, STEM fields would keep on keeping on, but all this marginal SJW crap would disappear.
And like most industries, public education has become self-serving and sclerotic. Even if we endorsed current educational goals, actual education science has long shown that common methods are wrong and unproductive.
Take foreign languages. Are people better off if they can speak more than one language? Probably. Does 3 years of instruction in high school teach a second language? Not even close. Are there other learning values in spending 3 years that do not achieve the stated goal? Debatable but unlikely.
There are certainly other learning values. They're just not worth spending years on.
I pretty much only took a foreign language in high school because everyone said it was required for college.
How we can continue to place so much emphasis on foreign languages while pretty much ignoring financial literacy is mind-boggling.
Hey, why even have "free speech", unless the government is able to control information for our (their?) best interests?

“Hence, after a year or two, guess what? A new scapegoat has to be found. And on and on the vicious spiral goes.”
I actually don’t think that’s accurate. Usually the same scapegoats are used for decades.
Communists have hated the middle and upper classes for over a century. The Nazis didn’t invent anti-semitism in the 20’s and 30’s, weren’t the first Germans to think it, and have pretty much kept that up for a century now. Republicans and democrats have hated each other for over a century.
The idea that human conflict can be reduced to silly scapegoats that change every couple of years is a ridiculously wrong over-simplification of human conflict. What’s the point?
Seriously, does the author think the Jewish Palestinian conflict is not a conflict of nationalism? Or that there are scapegoats being invented every few couple of years in that conflict?
This is yet another example of people who can write assuming that means they have something smart to write, when really all they have is theories they’ve cobble together from incredibly limited information to try to make some convenient point in the moment. It was a jury decision. At this point court is useless as they will always vote dem even in the jury box
Libertarians only care about journalism when some guy mean tweets about fake news.
New Zealand PM speech at the UN is fucking disturbing. Calling for global collectives and government ruling information.

WEF going to WEF.
Besides to the Maori (who should definitely eat all the white invaders and their sheep), and LOR fanboys, does New Zealand even matter?
Canaries in a coal mine. Work towards transitioning smaller countries first.
This.
What's happening in Canada, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand right now is what they'll be doing in the US in 2023.
And the constitution won't stop them because they'll just ignore it. State governments might be a bit of a roadblock, but that's it.
From what I've read New Zealand has some awesome fly fishing and red stag hunting.

FBI raids home of Catholic pro-life speaker, author with guns drawn as his terrified kids watch
The warrant charged Mark with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, due to a claimed “ATTACK OF A PATIENT ESCORT.” Ryan-Marie stated this charge comes from an incident that had already been thrown out of the District Court in Philadelphia but was somehow picked up by Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice.
Since the Biden administration has taken power in January 2021, Garland’s Department of Justice and the FBI have committed dozens of SWAT team raids that have been characterized as a political “weaponization” of the federal agencies against pro-lifers, Trump supporters, conservative Christians, and medical freedom advocates.
For example, in contrast to left-wing rioters who caused enormous damage in cities across the nation in 2020, and the vandals who have attacked dozens of pro-life centers this year with little or no legal ramifications, the Department of Justice implemented the harshest of consequences for those they identified as having anything to do with the disturbance at the Capital on January 6, 2021. These actions have included early morning SWAT team arrests, ransacked homes, confiscation of property, indefinite pre-trial solitary confinement without bail in a dedicated D.C. prison, significant physical abuse, and the violation of the Constitutional right to a speedy trial.
In March, the FBI rounded up 10 pro-life activists, including Joan Andrews Bell, with SWAT team raids that serve to intimidate and humiliate the accused through an exercise of excessive force.
A surfaced video of one of these raids shows armed agents holding pro-lifers at gunpoint and ordering them to put their hands up, drop to their knees and scoot backward out their front door in the middle of the night. The pro-lifers are respectful and compliant throughout.
Does anyone, even the lefties, still seriously believe that the FBI aren't the Biden Administration's Stasi?
This is how you turn 'protesters' into honest-to-god revolutionaries, for what it's worth.
Put people who are already irate about a situation into prison without trial for a few years, and suddenly they are a little more than just 'irate' about the situation and may be inclined to actually perpetrate some true violence.
Everything the Progressives claimed the Trump Administration would be, the Biden Administration, their administration, is. A classic case of four years of projection followed by those whining the most actually being the very fascists they claim to be against.
But I have been assured it was Trump who was going to do this shit. I mean it's right there, all fascists are right wing. The left is the defenders of Democracy™.
Democratcy, not democracy.

"Belgium announced on Friday that its Doel 3 nuclear reactor will disconnect from the grid and cease operations, even as the country fears blackouts this winter. It is one of four reactors at the Doel plant near the port of Antwerp, and is the first nuclear reactor to shut down in Belgium’s plan to exit nuclear power completely.
The move moves even as thousands of Belgians took to the streets on Wednesday to protest soaring electricity prices and high costs of living. In a recent Belgian media poll, 64% of Belgians are concerned that they might not be able to pay their energy bills.
It also comes as Belgium stainless steel maker Aperam was forced to stop production as the high energy prices became untenable."
The cleanest viable form of energy we've got and they're turfing it for the unicorn farts of wind and solar.
It's likethey're deliberately trying to destroy their countries.I hope one day after the dust clears that these politicians, bureaucrats and climate alarmists are brought before a war crimes tribunal to answer for all the deaths and destruction they caused.
I half wonder if actions like this, along with the full throated assault on ag, is because the population bomb didn't happen naturally so they're going to force it to happen. Also, all the apocalyptic predictions about Climate Change™ haven't panned out so they'll cause harm and blame it on Climate Change™.
The proles should learn their place. Only their betters in government and titans of 'private' enterprise deserve electricity. The proletariat can freeze to death knowing that their sacrifice will at least receive lip service from their betters.
Of course, this is all in service of the planet you see. There are too many people on Earth, and killing off a billion or so of us will make the Earth a more sustainable place to live for those who remain.

All captured on video.
Mind blowing stupidity to leave their cruiser on the tracks, but I'm glad it wasn't intentional.
Crazy to see though.
I don't think it was intentional but I think it qualifies as criminal negligence.

Chinese President Xi Jinping rumoured to be under house arrest, social media suggests hostile PLA takeover
The reports, which have not been confirmed by either Chinese credible media, further claimed that international and domestic flights to and from the Chinese capital have been halted, and that the city has been cut off from the rest of the world.
It claims that President Xi Jinping has been put under house arrest after he was removed from the post of PLA chief.
According to News Highland Vision, former Chinese President Hu Jintao and former Prime Minister Wen Jibao persuaded Song Ping, ex-member of the Standing Committee, to join hands with them and take charge of the Central Guard Bureau.
The CGB is reportedly responsible for the security of the President, and the standing committee of the ruling Community Party of China.
Several videos surfaced on the internet from unverified accounts suggesting that large army convoys taking rounds around the city. The tweets also mention that President Jinping has been sacked, further adding that the large army convoy is over 80 km long, heading to Beijing.
Interesting. A possible coup?
Bitch please. Sure they have an 80km convoy, but not a single fire extinguisher? They can't do anything
You have a Chinese coup, and you want another one an hour later.
If it is real, I doubt that the PLA is going to put in power someone better.

https://mtracey.substack.com/p/a-fairy-tale-version-of-world-war
Wherein Michael Tracey explains the neocon plan for WW3
" World War II remains the ultimate cudgel with which to beat people over the head if they dare to depart from prevailing foreign policy consensus. Anyone who’s ever dipped their toes into public discussion around the war in Ukraine will be familiar with the reflexive invocation of World War II as an exquisitely clear-cut, morally unambiguous analogy that compels interventionist US policy. The idea, of course, is that the moral dimensions of the war in Ukraine today are as absolute and unassailable as the moral dimensions of World War II — which is understood to have been a metaphysically binary war between good and evil, in which the US intervened to ensure the triumph of good over evil."
There’s nothing new about this argumentative tactic. On July 28, 1965, Lyndon Johnson justified his escalation of large-scale military intervention by proclaiming: “Nor would surrender in Vietnam bring peace, because we learned from Hitler at Munich that success only feeds the appetite of aggression.” On May 31, 2003, George W. Bush offered a thunderous justification for the Iraq War by proclaiming his determination to avert “the treachery of another September in 1939.” Countless people who appear to have a Facebook-meme-level understanding of “Neville Chamberlain” nonetheless invoke that name at every possible opportunity to bludgeon skeptics of whatever US military intervention happens to be on the menu.
A recent person to do so was Congressman Darrell Issa of California, who on February 12 of this year denounced Joe Biden for “appeasing a tyrant” — that is, Vladimir Putin. This made Biden the latest incarnation of Chamberlain, according to Issa, even though Biden would go on to launch a massive armament provision and “intelligence-sharing” intervention in Ukraine. At present, Biden’s intervention includes operational engagement by the US in the offensive warfare of the Ukraine military.
On September 21, Putin announced what is unquestionably a major escalation in its own right, ordering a “partial mobilization” of Russian forces and a plan to formally annex several Ukraine provinces. He also threatened nuclear reprisal. Over the past seven months, even to wonder if US policy may be contributing to this escalatory spiral in Ukraine would invariably invite avalanches of furious condemnation. Simply noticing observable reality as to the effects of US policy, it had been decreed, was moral turpitude of the highest order — an affront equivalent to opposing US intervention against Nazi Germany in World War II.
Biden just repeated on September 18 that notwithstanding any escalatory risks, the US will maintain an “ironclad commitment” to doing “whatever it takes” to inflict total defeat on Russia. In light of this, it’s worth re-examining some of the assumptions that underlie the constant invocation of World War II to justify present-day interventionist US policy. And to assess whether these analogies really do carry the absolutist moral weight that so many people seem to automatically presume they do.
Interestingly enough one of the main arguments Japanese admirals and generals made to attack the US rather than the soviets (during the summer of 1941 Japanese high command was actively debating which one to attack) was that despite being neutral the US and British material support for China (the Soviets had been China's largest source of arms until Operation Barbarossa) which allowed China to continue to resist Japanese conquest.

What were some of the first actions that Stalin, Mao, Kim, Pol Pot did when getting power? Try to dictate how agriculture should be conducted despite having absolutely no background in agriculture (I think a certain Austrian vegetarian failed painter also dabbled unsuccessfully in agriculture). What were the results? Combined over a 100 million preventable deaths by some estimates.
I propose a constitutional amendment: neither Congress nor the executive branch can dictate agricultural practices if they can't correctly differentiate between a harvester, a drill and a hoe or a Hereford and a Holstein. Neither party can receive outside help to answer these basic questions.
Careful with your caviats, something tells me Biden would have no problem identifying a hoe
Okay, chisel hoe.
And one is a moo cow and the other is a chew cow. (from my wive that grew up on a beef farm)
Failed, you had to seek outside help.
I'm not looking to set ag policy, just looking to give you money for good steak
From my point of view, the latter is a worthless, pain in the ass, the former is a decent cow but has a propensity for prolapses, and tends to be a more nervous mother.
On a related note I applied for a feed consultant with a major AG company (I have a MS in Animal Science with a focus on nutrition) and was told they were looking for people with business degrees. What does a business degree have to do with consulting on feed for ranch customers?
I once also had to explain to a USDA representative what a ruminant nutritionist is. She had a communication degree and was working as a field tech for NRCS.
I've pretty much stopped applying for USDA jobs, because they'll hire you if your female or some other favored group with a BA communications degree for tech jobs and consulting jobs before they hire someone who has a MS in Animal Science, worked seven years as an agricultural extension agent and owns his own ranch, because diversity.
Tell them your esg score is high
Been hoping to stumble upon you soldier. Curious if you have an opinion on “true velocity” synthetic cartridges?
I'm afraid I don't have enough information on the subject to make an informed opinion. That being said, synthetic cartridges that don't utilize brass have been something they've strived for for decades. I remember when I was younger, the caseless cartridge was the next new thing (this was three decades ago) and several companies marketed platforms using them and ammunition. It never really caught on. Also, I reload when I have the time, so I would like to see how this impacts reloading. For military use I could see benefits, especially as our military is adopting larger caliber rounds, thus heavier ammunition. For infantry every ounce counts. Maybe for hardcore sheep hunters or others alpine hunters it may also be somewhat beneficial. For me, doing day hunts on the prairie, brass isn't to much of a detriment. All that being said, one of the reasons I reload is cost so if the ammo is cheaper not being able to reload may not be an issue. I would definitely be open to trying some in my AR or some in my new sig.
I never heard of this until you mentioned it. It's polymer based, so what residue does it leave in the gun? I looked on their website and they don't say
Whenever you see a negative reference to "climate change" replace that phrase with "undeserving people being happy."
