21 Years After 9/11, TSA Still Insists on Grabbing Your Dick When You Fly
The Transportation Security Administration is one of the more useless, invasive appendages of the post-9/11 security state. It’s well past time to get rid of it.

Twenty-one years on from the destruction of the Twin Towers, it's becoming possible to tell which parts of the post-9/11 security state were passing expediencies or flashes of paranoia, and which have become institutionalized parts of American life.
Last year's withdrawal from Afghanistan suggests large-scale regime change wars with lots of American boots on the ground are over for now. The Biden administration, for all its foreign policy faults, has drastically wound down overseas drone strikes. Perhaps those too will become a relic of a darker time.
Many more elements of the War on Terror bureaucracy have become permanent, accepted features of American life. That would include the most visible, intrusive, and useless of them all: the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Created just two short months after the 9/11 attacks, the TSA nationalized a largely privatized, decentralized system of airport security that existed previously and replaced it with the federalized behemoth we know today.
It brought with it many of the things people hate most about airports: long lines, forced shoe removal, and dour government agents giving you the third degree for carrying too much toothpaste.
I got a good reminder of the TSA's many excesses just yesterday when going through one of the agency's once-controversial full-body scanners.
As I stepped out of the Orwellian picture booth in the Nashville airport, I was told that the machine had issued a "groin alert" and that I'd have to receive the requisite pat down.
A TSA agent took me aside and explained in minute detail all the places his hands and fingers would have to go—all, I guess, in an effort to reassure me that the coming molestation was all above board (legally, if not literally).
Having a gloved federal employee whisk his hands around your waistline and pat down your genitals provokes an interesting range of emotions—none of them particularly positive. It's an experience that's humiliating for the searched, and degrading for the searcher.
The agent's inspection produced no weapons or contraband of course. It didn't even produce an apology.
Perhaps TSA agents are worried that offering a simple "sorry" after conducting an unnecessary search might raise awkward questions about how often scanning machines that process 2 million people a day raise these false alarms.
They needn't worry. America seems to have convinced itself that treating every member of the flying public like a potential terrorist is a totally normal part of air travel.
Gone is the shock and horror that TSA agents "saw you naked." The agency's old foes in the civil libertarian left and populist right have largely moved on to other pressing issues. Travel-sized shampoos and Pre-Check have made some of the most annoying elements of our airport security regime less so.
Still, nothing has changed about the uselessness of the TSA.
The agency misses as much as 70 percent of the fake bombs, guns, and explosives that undercover government auditors try to sneak through their security checkpoints. Surveyed passengers report a near-90 percent success rate at getting illicit substances and items through security.
Improved safety obviously isn't the reason the agency is still around. Nor can its continued existence be explained by its employees' love of the job. The TSA ranks close to the bottom of all government agencies in terms of employee pay, morale, and turnover.
Perhaps the only thing keeping it alive is shamelessness. The TSA's media arm takes every possible opportunity to remind people of the tragedy of 9/11. The implication is clear: if you eliminate us, the events of that day could happen again.

Hardly. Its track record suggests we could safely eliminate the agency and its onerous security checkpoints without any heightened risk of terrorism.
The flying public would reclaim a little privacy and decency. Taxpayers would save a little money. TSA employees would get the nudge they need to leave a job they probably hate. It's a win-win-win for America.
Come November, the TSA will celebrate its 21st birthday. So let's buy them a drink of fewer than 3.4 ounces and wish they don't turn 22.

The one time there was an actual threat at an airport checkpoint, the TSA agents fled along with everyone else.

There is a certain population that lives by this credo.
I mean, I go to concerts and the opera and they've taken to setting up airport style security there. At the opera, all the metal detectors are going to find is fake hips, for fuck's sake, but the Symphony is worse.
Get this, the venue is outdoors. It is surrounded by a public walkway so people can journey along the waterline and visit the park. The public area and the grounds of the concert venue are separated by a fence that's about waist high. Seriously. You get gate raped and have your bags searched by surly asshole guards and the area is about as non-sterile as you can get. I mean, the fence is three feet high, if I want to cause mayhem there's no goddamned way I'm going to bother to buy a ticket to do it. Or if I need a weapon inside, like I'm trying to be a spy assassin and take out someone right in the middle how hard would it be to have someone pass the weapon over the waist-high fence?
This is what the TSA have reaped. People think this shit is normal. I feel like I'm the only one who finds it remarkably degrading and invasive.
Much of that is to prevent people from bringing food and drink inside the venue, forcing them to buy the high priced food and drink inside.
Reminds me of the time I had my little baggie of almonds confiscated out of my purse. Idiots took my back up snack for the road.
And if you question TSA you get shamed for not honoring the folks who were killed that day. Had I been one of them I'd be pissed for invoking my death as a justification for this pointless nonsense.

I've refused to fly for more than a decade, and have only flown twice since the federal government imposed post totalitarian policies at airports after 9/11.

While the Kremlin controls the television airwaves in Russia and has blocked access to Instagram and Facebook, Telegram remains freely accessible and is filled with posts and videos from supporters and opponents of the war alike.
The widely followed pro-war bloggers — some embedded with Russian troops near the front line — amplify the Kremlin’s false message that Russia is fighting “Nazis” and refer to Ukrainians in derogatory and dehumanizing ways. But they are also divulging far more detailed — and, analysts say, accurate — information about the battlefield than the Russian Defense Ministry is, which they say is underestimating the enemy and withholding bad news from the public.....
It was the bloggers who first rang alarm bells publicly about a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive in the country’s northeast.
On Aug. 30, a Kremlin spokesman held his regular conference call with journalists and repeated his mantra: The invasion of Ukraine was going “in accordance with the plans.”
The same day, several Russian bloggers were reporting on social media that something was very much not going according to plan. Ukraine was building up forces for a counterattack near the town of Balakliya, they said, and Russia did not appear in position to defend against it.
“Hello, hello, anybody home?” one asked. “Are we ready to fend off an attack in this direction?”
Days later, it became apparent that the answer was no. Ukrainian forces overran Russia’s thin defenses in Balakliya and other nearby towns in northeastern Ukraine. By this weekend, some analysts estimated that the territory retaken by Ukraine amounted to about 1,000 square miles, a potential turning point in what had become a war of attrition this summer.
“It’s time to punish the commanders who allowed these kinds of things,” Maksim Fomin, a pro-Russian blogger from eastern Ukraine, said in a video published on Friday, claiming that Russian forces did not even try to resist as Ukraine’s military swept forward this week.
Some of the bloggers are embedded with military units and work for state-run or pro-Kremlin media outlets, preparing reports for television while providing more detail on their Telegram accounts. Others appear to operate more independently, relying on personal connections for access near the front line and adding their bank details to their Telegram posts to solicit donations.
Mr. Kuznets, a former Russian war correspondent himself, said that Russian military officials appeared to tolerate the presence of war bloggers despite their occasional criticism, in part because they agreed with the bloggers’ hawkish, imperialist views. And the bloggers play a crucial role in spreading the pro-Russian message on social media, where their audience includes both Russians and Ukrainians.
Still, among some bloggers, the anger over the Russian military’s mistakes reached a fever pitch on Saturday. One called Russia’s retreat a “catastrophe,” while others said that it had left the residents who collaborated with Russian forces at the mercy of Ukrainian troops — potentially undermining the credibility of the occupying authorities all across the territory that Russia still holds.
And while the Kremlin still maintains that the invasion is merely a “special military operation,” several bloggers insisted on Saturday that Russia was, in fact, fighting a full-fledged war — not just against Ukraine, but against a united West that is backing Kyiv.
The stunned fury reflects how some analysts believe many in the Russian elite view the war: a campaign rife with incompetence, conducted on the cheap, that can only be won if Mr. Putin mobilizes the nation onto a war footing and declares a draft.
“I am sure that they reflect the opinion of their sources and the people they know and work with,” Mr. Kuznets said. “I think the biggest group among these people believes that it is necessary to fight harder and carry out a mobilization.”
Both Western and Russian analysts said that Mr. Putin would need a draft to sharply expand the size of his invading force. But he appears determined to resist such a measure, which could shatter the passivity with which much of the Russian public has treated the war. In August, 48 percent of Russians told the independent pollster Levada that they were paying little or no attention to the events in Ukraine.
As a result, analysts say, Mr. Putin faces no good options. Escalating a war whose domestic support may turn out to be superficial could stir domestic unrest, while continuing retreats on the battlefield could spur a backlash from hawks who have bought into the Kremlin narrative that Russia is fighting “Nazis” for its very survival.
Ever since Russia retreated in April from its attempt to capture Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, the Kremlin’s goals in the war have been unclear, disorienting Mr. Putin’s supporters, said Rob Lee, a military analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
“The Ukrainians’ war effort is obvious, it’s understandable, whereas on the Russian side, it was always a question of: What is Russia doing?” Mr. Lee said in a phone interview. “The goals aren’t clear, and how they achieve those goals isn’t clear. Why Donald Trump Will Soon Be Indicted

Even a cursory review of the redacted version of the affidavit submitted in support of the government's application for a search warrant at the home of former President Donald Trump reveals that he will soon be indicted by a federal grand jury for three crimes: Removing and concealing national defense information (NDI), giving NDI to those not legally entitled to possess it, and obstruction of justice by failing to return NDI to those who are legally entitled to retrieve it.
When he learned from a phone call that 30 FBI agents were at the front door of his Florida residence with a search warrant and he decided to reveal this publicly, Trump assumed that the agents were looking for classified top-secret materials that they'd allege he criminally possessed. His assumptions were apparently based on his gut instinct and not on a sophisticated analysis of the law. Hence, his public boast that he declassified all the formerly classified documents he took with him.
Unbeknownst to him, the feds had anticipated such a defense and are not preparing to indict him for possessing classified materials, even though he did possess hundreds of voluntarily surrendered materials marked "top secret." It is irrelevant if the documents were declassified, as the feds will charge crimes that do not require proof of classification. They told the federal judge who signed the search warrant that Trump still had NDI in his home. It appears they were correct.
Under the law, it doesn't matter if the documents on which NDI is contained are classified or not, as it is simply and always criminal to have NDI in a non-federal facility, to have those without security clearances move it from one place to another, and to keep it from the feds when they are seeking it. Stated differently, the absence of classification — for whatever reason — is not a defense to the charges that are likely to be filed against Trump.
Yet, misreading and underestimating the feds, Trump actually did them a favor. One of the elements that they must prove for any of the three crimes is that Trump knew that he had the documents. The favor he did was admitting to that when he boasted that they were no longer classified. He committed a mortal sin in the criminal defense world by denying something for which he had not been accused.
The second element that the feds must prove is that the documents actually do contain national defense information. And the third element they must prove is that Trump put these documents into the hands of those not authorized to hold them and stored them in a non-federally secured place. Intelligence community experts have already examined the documents taken from Trump's home and are prepared to tell a jury that they contain the names of foreign agents secretly working for the U.S. This is the crown jewel of government secrets. Moreover, Trump's Florida home is not a secure federal facility designated for the deposit of NDI.
The newest aspect of the case against Trump that we learned from the redacted affidavit is the obstruction allegation. This is not the obstruction that Robert Mueller claimed he found Trump committed during the Russia investigation. This is a newer obstruction statute, signed by President George W. Bush in 2002, that places far fewer burdens on the feds to prove. The older statute is the one Mueller alleged. It characterizes any material interference with a judicial function as criminal. Thus, one who lies to a grand jury or prevents a witness from testifying commits this variant of obstruction.
But the Bush-era statute, the one the feds contemplate charging Trump with having violated, makes it a crime of obstruction by failing to return government property or by sending the FBI on a wild goose chase looking for something that belongs to the government and that you know that you have. This statute does not require the preexistence of a judicial proceeding. It only requires that the defendant has the government's property, knows that he has it and baselessly resists efforts by the government to get it back.

Hate to tell you, but while not as severe, Covid is running amok where I live. Numerous work associates - including subs and all their employees - are catching it and it is usually, but not always easy. 2 guys I know in pretty good shape - one about 55 the other maybe 45 - really struggled with it, were out 2 weeks plus with the 1st week really bad, and both still feel low energy a month later.

"Saving millions of lives" is a bit of a stretch based on Sweden's experience (tell gramma and grampa, and the neighbor on chemo to stay home, but let everyone else get on with their lives). In fact, Sweden has a total death rate to date only about 2/3 that in the US.
Hardly anybody is masked now, but they should be indoors if they don't want to catch it, and depending on where you are that is the CDC recommendation.

Here's a tip: you're never obligated to go through the full body scanner. You can ask for a pat down from the start. Yes, it's not fun, either, but in my opinion it's less degrading than "assuming the position" in the "Perp Box" (like a criminal being arrested) and it forces an actual person to have to deal with you instead of hiding behind anonymous automation.
If enough people refused the scanner and insisted on pat downs where the government thugs had to look them in the eye, they'd eventually get rid of the scanners.

No agency or organization is “monolithic” - the criticism should be directed to the “top management” not the poor TSA guy forced to frisk passengers.
Subordinate employees take orders from superiors. These employees have rent, mortgages, families and college tuition also. If they refuse unconstitutional illegal orders - from disloyal superiors - they can’t provide for their families.
The “top management” (ie: TSA Director, Congress, presidents, etc) swore a supreme and superseding loyalty oath - Oath of Office - not to violate rights. If they stop giving illegal orders, so will the poor guys stuck frisking passengers.
