Biden's Presidential Address Was Actually a Campaign Speech
Plus: Backpage appeal hits the 9th Circuit today, E.U. petition would ban anyone born after 2010 from ever buying nicotine products, and more...

Standing in what looked like some sort of medieval crypt, President Joe Biden last night gave a televised speech on the "battle for the soul of the nation." On one level, it was quite ho-hum—so unrooted in anything of the moment, so lackluster in its delivery, so full of pablum and platitudes that it's easy to wonder what the point of it all was.
But of course, on another level, the point was very clear. Biden's soul of the nation speech was meant to rally people to vote for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections, through a combination of pointing out the things Democrats have (allegedly) done right and, more emphatically, things former President Donald Trump and "MAGA Republicans" have done wrong.
In the speech, Biden repeatedly distinguished mainstream Republicans, who he implied believe in all the good American principles that Democrats do, from MAGA Republicans. MAGA Republicans are the kind of conservatives who "do not respect the Constitution," "do not believe in the rule of law," "do not recognize the will of the people," and "represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic," said Biden. They "refuse to accept the results of a free election," "promote authoritarian leaders," and "fan the flames of political violence." They're "determined to take this country backwards—backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love."
Maybe the distinction was meant as cover against accusations that this was a totally partisan speech. Maybe it was an attempt to welcome "mainstream Republicans" or Republican-leaning independents over to Democrats' side. But Biden's premise here is tragically flawed, because "mainstream" Republicans today are MAGA Republicans. Maybe not quite the caricature of MAGA Republicans that Biden laid out. But Trump fans (with all that entails) are not some fringe. They're at the center of today's Republican Party and account for many of its candidates.
Biden is harking back to an era of "mainstream" Republicanism that no longer exists.
Holding up MAGA Republicans as particularly dangerous is also interesting given all the money Democrats have poured into MAGA Republican primary candidates. Their reasoning here is that it will be easier for Democrats to win in the general election against extremist, conspiracy-promoting GOP candidates than against nice, normie Republicans.
Even if these "MAGA Republicans" do not win in 2022 midterms, Democrats spending to boost the candidates' profiles gives them a bigger platform on the national stage — a platform that can be used to spread disproven theories about the 2020 election being stolen from Donald Trump. https://t.co/6RZexFnygK

Will it pay off as a political strategy? Maybe. But that doesn't detract from the moral bankruptcy of it—and also undercuts Democratic claims that MAGA Republicans are existentially dangerous to democracy and civilized society. If that were true, wouldn't it be more important to do anything possible to keep them out of office? If that were true, wouldn't boosting them just to better Democrats' midterm election odds be depraved?
There was perhaps a twinge of this convoluted strategy in Biden's soul of the nation speech, which went quite heavy on condemning Trump and Trumpism. Baiting Republicans to vociferously defend Trump, or simply continuing to associate Republicanism and Trumpism in American minds, may benefit Democratic candidates in the midterms when it comes to independent/swing voters, who have been losing love for Trump in the wake of the January 6 hearings.
There's a theory going around that Democrats want to keep focus on Trump—with the January 6 hearings, the Mar-a-Lago raid, etc.—so that he'll decide to run again in 2024, because they believe he'll be easier to beat than someone like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. To be clear, there's no particular evidence for this (and in what world wouldn't Democrats do January 6 hearings, etc., regardless?). But things like Biden's speech last night make it seem not entirely implausible.
In any event, Biden's soul of the nation speech last night was boring and entirely forgettable. But perhaps, in the post-Trump years, boring and totally forgettable isn't something we should take for granted. Boring and forgettable is much better from a president than actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections.
But there is a way in which Biden's speech last night echoed Trump speeches: It was not simply a speech for all Americans. It was not designed simply to convey information, celebrate some national win, or reassure Americans in the wake of a disconcerting event. It seemed pretty clearly designed to rally people toward Democrats and against Republicans, just as many Trump speeches were designed to do the opposite. And no matter who's doing it, it's upsetting to see the presidential pulpit used in this way.

That was one of the most bizarre aspects of the speech--the whole backdrop had a strong "Man in The High Castle" or "V for Vendetta" vibe to it.
If you want to project this as an forceful, rah-rah-sis-boom-bah America speech at Independence Hall, you do it during the daytime, with lots of red, white, and blue bunting hanging up everywhere. You don't do it at night, where you can barely see one of the most iconic buildings in American history, and then cloak the building in a lighted motif that will only show red and black on the screen.
See, they rub your nose in what they are doing to you. It's part of their plan.

That movie used to be on all the damn time. Ever since the pandemic started... nowhere.
Isn't it hilarious that the comic was essentially an attempt to condemn Thatcher, and the movie was commissioned to criticize Bush/Blair, and was run all throughout the Trump presidency...and yet now that we have Biden demanding that half the country is an enemy to the republic, it is nowhere to be seen?

This was a notable comment from the article:

These are salient questions, but they assume that the Democrats care more about anything other than winning the next election cycle and indulging their will to power. Nothing in this strategy, much like a lot of what these balloonheads have done the last 20 years since Pelosi essentially became the head of the party, suggests any kind of future-time orientation or awareness that their actions might not come back to bite them in the ass later. Sinema appears to be the only Democrat with this kind of capability, which is probably why her party hates her so much--they're far too addicted to the dopamine rush of short-term wins than ensuring the GOP can't cornhole them with it later on.
Boring and forgettable is much better from a president than actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections.
And yet they still manage to pretend that Trump was uniquely dangerous to Democracy (we're a Republic, right?) in the same breath.
"If that were true, wouldn't it be more important to do anything possible to keep them out of office?"
He really did not catch that that's exactly what Biden is promising to do. Just, whoosh, right over his head.
Seemed more like:
"The staging appeared to mark the return of Leni Riefenstahl. This was Triumph of the Will for dummies."
From Steven Hayward.
By dummies doo you mean voters?
American progressives invented propaganda, indoctrination, and eugenics at the beginning of the 20th century. Germany perfected it. Just like cars.
So, it's really American progressives returning to their roots.
He wanted to feel at home.
Seems fitting that the crypt was Independence Hall.
"Republicans have lots of (rightful) criticism about current public health protocols. But do they actually have any plans to reform public health bureaucracies?"
The plan is to get rid of all of them.
Sounds like insurrection talk.
That doesn't sound like a plan if you're a fan of centralized government.
It's more of an anti-plan, which is cool because anti-stuff seems to be the in thing.
I think it's fair to question if Republicans are actually going to stop all the things they're upset about, or if everything is going to keep chugging along due to bureaucratic inertia. It does help to have an idea about how to cute out the bureaucratic bullshit. I don't see a plan to disband the CDC and NIAID and the NIH, even if I'd like to.
It's instructive to remember that the Republicans did actually try to kill off Obamacare right after Trump took office, and that shitbird McCain saved it.
After bird shit John Roberts saved it (twice)
Well, McCain was actually a Democrat, so he was being honest.
McCain was a vain, angry, self-dealing a--hole who didn't give a f*ck about America or the American people.
McCain and Biden are cut from the same cloth.
To a large extent, Republicans can be guilty of the "Right People" mentality. It's why they're really pissed off about Anthony Fauci, but when Rand Paul proposes an amendment to actually eliminate the position of NIAID director, it goes nowhere. Too many Republicans just want the right guy to hold the same power and position, and if we can just get rid of the bad people, we can make government work.
This is a pointed observation that holds up quite well over the last 40-odd years. I think a lot of it is bathed in Reagan nostalgia that's persisted since the '84 wipeout.
The trick to to keep Rand Paul and then vote in a majority that will vote for his bill.
While Republicans are often shitty, it's also instructive to realize they don't hold a hell of a lot of power.
It's also instructive to realize the last time Democrats held a lock on power they passed the ACA, which is not something Republicans would do even though it originated with the likes of Romney. It was DOA until the Democrats decide to fuck over the entire healthcare sector.
Any time I hear a Democrat bitch and moan about 'recalcitrant' Republicans that won't cross the aisle, I'm reminded that Democrats gave Republicans the finger on the ACA and damned the consequences. It would be hilarious if it wasn't actively destructive. They like to fuck things up, then blame it on the minority party that couldn't do anything about it even if they wanted to. Somehow, this sells to a retarded populace.
Oh, they'll get around to it in 50 or so years, after jointly warping the SCOTUS (see also: Roe v Wade ...)
The dems can't be morally bankrupt. They never had morals to begin with
I'll give some latitude here. You can start with zero assets, find a sucker to loan to you, and then leave them holding the bag.
A short sale on morals, if you will.
Biden's Presidential Address Was Actually a Campaign Speech
Is there any other kind of Presidential Address? Is ENB new to life?
And no matter who's doing it, it's upsetting to see the presidential pulpit used in this way.
Seriously, are you new? Have you ever watched a president speak? They're ALL pushing their own political views to attack their opposition.
Never heard a President attack so many voters in a speech. Trump did not do that.
Remember how Biden campaigned on being a unifier, about how all the divisiveness that Trump brought to the position was detrimental to the country?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
That was always bullshit, but I'm actually a little surprised how diametrically opposite to that he's been pretty much since day one.
I do wish he disliked another country with anywhere near the fire he loathes Americans.
Biden hates Americans because Americans somehow don't see his intellectual brilliance, his benevolence, his skillful hand in governing the nation! It's because we are stupid! If we were smarter, he'd have a 100% approval rating because he is that great (in his own mind)!
It wasn't any different than Hillary's "basket of deplorables" speech. They both tried to split hairs by clumsily attempting to differentiate between "good" and "bad" Republicans, and ended up coming off like they were attacking all of them.
Note that the Dems try to pull this rhetorical trick a lot--Buttigieg has talked about "Republicans of good faith," for instance, and you see it all the time on various MSNBC chat shows. What they really mean is "Republicans who won't stand in the way of our political agenda." When they say "our democracy," they mean THEIR democracy, not the entire nation.
"and ended up coming off like they were attacking all of them."
That's because they are attacking all of them. This whole "We aren't talking about all of you" is their analog to "I have several black friends, damnit!" and they know it.
Only if said by somebody who's lying about having several black friends.
The one that always gets me is the "I have a lot of issues with the Democrats, but look at all this stuff the Republicans are doing!" and their disingenuous complaints about divisiveness. They then spend all their energy bitching about Republicans, and somehow never get around to explaining what they think the Democrats are doing that's so bad.
Probably because if they actually spelled it out, they'd be complaining that the Democrats weren't accelerating marxism fast enough.
The progressives I know think they're "holding Democrats' feet to the fire" if they complain that debt forgiveness isn't going far enough or the Democrats should have done more to protect Roe v. Wade. Then they go back to denouncing Trump, MAGA voters, and the "Fox News viewers" who live in their heads. They don't know anything about their opposition (and don't want to know) and only complain about their own tribe when they aren't getting everything they want.
Trump only attack his opponent, never the voters.
Remember how Trump said that there were 'very fine people' on both sides of the pro-statue/anti-statue demonstration but that he wasn't "talkiingi about the nazis and white supremacists, they should be condemned utterly"? And then the media pooped their pants and called him a fascist dictator?
yeah I remember that. He didnt do ENOUGH dividing for them.
How can you forget it? the press brings it up and calls him a Nazi again and again.
And Newsom is the governor of freedom, whereas DeathSantis is a totalitarian despot. These accusations are projection. If anything, I think progressives envy the right for having people like Trump and DeSantis on their team. If progs had the equivalent in their camp, they'd have made him emperor for life by now.
Come on, this is New Reason, where occasionally they write things that question the Democratic Establishment.
I would say the same thing about the speech. Almost any Presidential speech is political, and we have been seeing more of this with later Presidents. The President flies somewhere for a policy speech and then has a political rally that same night in the same location. Presidents use the White House or Presidential seal in political speeches. All wrong but how do you stop it?
Enforce the Hatch Act.
Nice try, but IIRC the president and VP are exempt. 8-(
Presidents use the White House or Presidential seal in political speeches. All wrong but how do you stop it?
You stop pretending the Presidency is some sacred thing that is supposedly above politics. It isn't, it never has been. FDR's first fireside chat included lines like, "The second step was the legislation promptly and patriotically passed by the Congress confirming my proclamation and broadening my powers..." showing that the patriotic thing to do was to expand the powers of the President.
Also: "The success of our whole great national program depends, of course, upon the cooperation of the public -- on its intelligent support and use of a reliable system." Do what we tell you because if you don't, you risk destroying the whole system.
The Presidency has always been political.
Biden got free television time for his speech by explicitly representing it as *non-political*.
That's bullshit. The president can't take a shit without it being political, he's the ultimate embodiment of national politics. We all know this.
An apt comparison of national politics and taking a shit. Well played! 🙂
Maybe I converse with the wrong people, but I don't really see much value in his well-branded Ultra-MAGA, semi-fascist campaign he's currently on. The handful of people that truly believe Trump supporters almost overturned the election walking around the capital taking selfies are never going to vote Republican. Everyone else sees this as a long, drawn out pile of ranting desperation.
Just like with the student loan forgiveness, the benefits are not likely to sway any undecided voters. But I read these as efforts to inspire turnout of the true believers. "Motivating the base" has become the primary strategy--and, IMO, the end of civilized democracy.
If it costs that much to motivate the base, the polling must be truly terrible.
Abortion is probably going to be the thing that swings votes more than any other factor in the up-coming election, assuming white middle class women remember the issue when the time comes.
I'm sure Democrats will remind them though, even though not a single one of them would ever get an abortion. Amusing how it's touted so hard yet it's still so stigmatizing among women, even among far left liberals.
Inflation will likely be a close second, but it kind of depends on how much oil Biden can siphon out of the strategic reserves I guess.
Abortion is a non-issue for 99% of Americans: they are either male, or past the age where they would need it, or happily married.
You can bet your ass the woman vote will come out for this issue, and we know this because it's happened before. The only real question, I suppose, is if it outweighs all the other massive issues facing the U.S. in the short term.
Since most people are retarded, it seems likely that abortion could very well be rated higher than issues that will actually destroy the first world.
I could well be wrong, but never underestimate people to be shortsighted fools.
It's sort of like gun ownership and gun rights. I might not own one myself, and have no desire to ever own one, but at the same time if the government tries to infringe on that right I'm going to be outraged over it. Unlike abortion though, if the government tries to get rid of that right I'm going to go out and get a gun immediately. Something tells me none of the abortion supporters will do that.
Women are split on abortion the same way as men.
Republicans could have owned this issue by putting some reasonable, European-style compromise on the ballot, e.g. abortion on demand until 12 weeks, and afterwards only to protect the life of the mother. But, oh no, they let Democrats turn this into "Handmaid's tale vs bodily autonomy".
Women might be split on abortion, but I think you'll find broad support among women in favor of it. And even if it's split, that's still far more than 1% of voters even while it's also something that the vast majority of women will never ever need or want.
As for Republicans and what they could have done to avoid shooting themselves in the foot, well, I'd have to agree with you there. State legislatures apparently have no idea what they're doing regardless of party affiliation.
My wife is pro-choice and has voted for Democrats in the past, but she loathes them now, and she definitely doesn't support the Democrat position of unlimited abortion up to birth. An n of 1, I know, but still, there are women out there who support a limited legal right to abortion but no longer associate the Democrats with their own position on the issue.
You know who else benefited heavily from women voters?
The people he's talking to are the ones he needs to fear the Trump boogeyman enough to turn out in significant enough numbers prevent losing the house and (possibly) the senate.
Honestly, that's the only game plan because there is pretty much nothing that people would be motivated to vote in favor of the regime for. Even student loans won't work unless you can raise the fear that if the dems lose it won't go through.
People are simple creatures - we are motivated to vote when we dislike things and less likely to vote when we do like things. That is why midterms tend to swing against the party of the President because happy people don't vote.
SleepyJoe is mentally ill.
No, Biden isn't mentally ill. He is a vile, mediocre, corrupt, angry old man with a massive chip on his shoulder because the majority of Americans recognize him for what he is.
[Slams fist on TV set] Why won't this damn thing *like* me?
Maybe not quite the caricature of MAGA Republicans that Biden laid out.
But still a grave threat to our cherished institutions.
"Maybe not quite"? Her olive branch has poop on it.
Biden is harking back to an era of "mainstream" Republicanism that no longer exists.
Yeah, a lot of Republicans or republican-leaning voters are tired of watching their elected leaders get punched in the face by the opposition and the media and just taking the beating. They want their side to fight back.
Also, speaking of main-streams that no longer exist, WTF has happened to the democratic slightly-left-of-center moderates the past 15 years or so? There are like 2 left in the senate and somewhere around 0 in the house. And those 2 senators are vilified constantly by the media and progressives.
Exactly. What happened to mainstream Democrats since 2000? It's like they've all been replaced with the far-left progressive numbnuts.
We're still reeling from the Obama administration, when you couldn't criticize anything the administration was doing for fear of being racist. Moderates just let themselves get dragged to the left because they're so scared of being racist.
Now if you leave, you're a Nazi.
They've been redefined as Far-Right Extremists that are Dangerous To Our Democracy.
There's a theory going around that Democrats want to keep focus on Trump—with the January 6 hearings, the Mar-a-Lago raid, etc.—so that he'll decide to run again in 2024,
Another, more accurate theory, is that the Democrats have fucked up literally everything they've touched in the past two years and need a platform to run on, so they're going with their tried-and-true "hate and fear" tactic.
And currently, the dumbass Republicans are running on the we'll investigate everything platform. It really is as dumb as it sounds. There should be some investigating into all the shady shit going on, and a real draining of the swamp, but they are realistically going to have a bunch of toothless congressional hearings. The Democrats have given them so much ammunition in the last 2+ years, but they seem unwilling, unable, or too stupid to use it.
"The Democrats have given them so much ammunition in the last 2+ years, but they seem unwilling, unable, or too stupid to use it."
Unwilling and too stupid. I've never seen a group squander political clout like the GOP.
For his faults, Gingrich, in 1994, did provide a vision of what the GOP would do. And then they delivered.
Now? Nope.
Yes, this is what I found disappointing about DeSantis, tbh. I think he has a lot of the right instincts- giving parents control over their schooling, freedom during the pandemic, etc. But he also is too easily drawn into the culture war stuff that isn't going to actually make meaningful reform at the government level.
I am hoping that DeSantis tacks back towards his more substantive work, and that he is just trying to build his warchest off of cheap fund raising gimmicks. But...never underestimate a Republican's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
The thing that gets overlooked here is that Gingrich was a rhetorical bomb-thrower, but also had the ability to sit down with Clinton and figure out what they could work on together, even when they were trading punches in the press. That time period also seems like a success because the GOP and the neocons almost completely gave up on the culture war, after Hollywood and MTV in particular threw their shoulders out from patting themselves on the back about how they got Clinton elected. The Contract with America was almost exclusively economics-based.
The problem is that by doing so, they ended up conceding the entire battlefield to the left, and look where we're at 30 years later. Look how much the left is freaking out about the right pushing back against them in that arena--it's specifically because they don't want their monopoly challenged here, and are trying their misdirection by down-talking these things as "pointless culture war issues" to get the right focused back on economic issues, where they can do a full-court press by promising endless gibs.
It's way easier to avoid the culture war when one side isn't letting teachers help elementary kids find their path to being trannies or in favor of full-term abortion. I agree that most of that stuff only leads to bad things for the opposition, but the left has gone batshit crazy on some of the cultural issues.
"The problem is that by doing so, they ended up conceding the entire battlefield to the left, and look where we're at 30 years later."
I totally disagree with this conclusion. What happened is that people realized that getting elected merely requires looking better than the other guy, not actually doing anything substantive. The Right defeated Militant Feminism and made a pretty good strike against PC culture during the late 90s. It would not come back until late in the Obama administration.
All the shit that happened in 2000+ can be laid at the feet of Bush and his swarm. They completely bailed on the ideas of limited government, giving us Medicare Pt Deux and NCLB. Bush's folly in Iraq was so bad that it set conservatism back for 8 years, during which time Obama was able to ram through Dodd-Frank and Obama care.
Post Obama, consider that nearly 60% of our economy has been totally taken over through regulation of Banks and Health Care. That happened because of Bush, not because of Gingrich.
How did Gingrich deliver? Did he limit terms? Did he balance the budget? Did he make Congresscritters abide by the same laws they make for everyone else? This Contract For America seems more like a Contract On America.
Congress will not vote to limit their own power any more than they will vote against an increase in salary for themselves. Getting a bill for term limits passed into law will be next to impossible. Getting any bill that holds members of Congress accountable for their actions, and to the same standards as any other citizen, likely impossible. Given that I tend to be biased, I am going to bet that the next time a bill that concerns either of these comes up the votes against will be (D) 100%, (R) 80%. (D)s will add some horseshit rider amendments, so the republicans and independents voting against may be higher. Gingrich may have been an ass, but don't lay other peoples' hypocrisy at his feet.
Well, that's assuming that they really want the clout. The same people funding Reason have been lifelong R's. It's hard to get filthy rich while rocking the boat. Notice how the coverage here is only really critical when it's too late to matter. Without Trump, there weren't any candidates that had the balls to beat Hillary other than Rand Paul, and that was a terribly low bar. Since he has principles, he's easy to beat in an election.
Hey McConnell is doing his damndest to make sure the wrong kinds of Republicans lose their elections. That's something ain't it?
Vote everyone out.
It's been a very long time since we had the power to do that.
Giant Meteor.
You really ready to do that? I'm guessing your like everyone else, hate Congress but always vote for your own Congress person or Senator.
I have never, nor will I ever, vote for Cori Bush.
No matter who runs against my moron, Sam Graves, I'll never vote for that asshole again. Too many people worry about the other side winning and refuse to vote out the pricks we have. I vote against the incumbent at nearly every level for nearly every office by default. It takes significant circumstances for me to authorize another term for anyone.
Both Durbin and Duckworth(less) and go fuck themselves. I have never, and will never vote for those shitheads.
Why would you guess that on a libertarian site?
He lacks principles and assumes everyone else is the same.
I never vote for the incumbent. It’s not supposed to be a career.
61 years old, never missed an election. Not one single time did I vote for the current congressperson, and not one single time did the person I voted for win.
No I hate my congressman but I live in a gerrymandered district. My small town is split into three congressional districts jammed into major dem areas.
but always vote for your own Congress person or Senator.
Well, ONE senator.
But that's because MY congressman and one of my senators are --or used to be, before the rise of liberaltarians-- the libertarian wet dream.
Haha, jokes on you, I always write-in Garfield.
Nah! Bill The Cat. Because drugged-out pussy cats can't harm a whole nation! 🙂

"Moderation4ever" knows how everyone else is. Knows what is deep in their souls, and knows exactly what they do in blind polls.
Because, like all lefties, Moderation4Ever projects. A lot.
I know the facts and the facts are that incumbents almost never get beat. We hate the institution but not the incumbent.
Right but as I stated you’re on a libertarian web, er, I mean comment section. So it’s a stupid assumption, surprising no one.
This just in: Local politicians represent local populace, not the nation at large. Details at 11.
"Boring and forgettable is much better from a president than actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections."
Wait? You don't think Biden isn't also looney toons? Seriously? This is not 'wrong, but within normal parameters'. We're waaaaay past that.
I don't know how anything about the last year and a half is boring and forgettable. Recession, runaway inflation, out of control spending, war in Europe, a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, huge expansion of he IRS, political prosecutions, fascistic propaganda, fascistic government interference in private corporations to make them serve as censors, etc.
There's nothing mundane and ordinary about this presidency.
Personally, I'm very happy that divisive Trump character is no longer in office. Just consider where we'd be as country if Trump was still nominally in charge...
If it hadn’t been for COVID, I was hoping the next step was going to be to start reducing welfare to correct the shortage of employees.
He's demented and his entire team of handlers are nuts.
The stage setting and lighting looked like something you would see in a movie about a post-apocalyptic totalitarian dictatorship. Or, as someone else I heard say: "like the Soviet Union and Hitler had a baby"
Speaking of Hitler's baby...

"National test results released on Thursday showed in stark terms the pandemic's devastating effects on American schoolchildren, with the performance of 9-year-olds in math and reading dropping to the levels from two decades ago," reports The New York Times.
To the shock of everyone.
I can't wait to see how the Times-Democratic Party cabal will decide how to spin this in their favor. I assume it will focus on Racism.
See the Reason Rundown below. Apparently they're going to try to blame it on the Bad Orange Man.
KJP let everyone know yesterday that it was Trump's fault only 40% of schools were open. Also, she let us know that R's voted against the money-burning stimulus that miraculously made it safe to open schools by building turf ball fields and wasting trillions.
Yes, Trump's power with Democratic governors can't be denied. That's why only states with Republican governors reopened schools as early as possible.
Damn those Trumpist Californians!
1000% guarantee.
Of course it somehow won't highlight the fact the democrats and teacher's unions knowingly closing down for WAY longer than was necessary was the thing directly responsible for the disparate impact that happened to POC during lockdowns.
Itll just jump to POC's disparate outcomes and then postulate that racism, R's, and Trump probably did it.
Unfortunately for them, parents know which party shut down the schools and which one kept them closed for almost 2 years.
Yeah but the other party is full of dangerous fascists, so what are you gonna do?
Sounds like that might be a good thing, I've been assured of the horrors of No Child Left Behind so going back before it might do us some good.

Standing in what looked like some sort of medieval crypt,
Everywhere Biden goes looks like a medieval crypt when he's standing in it.
I'm convinced that guy from the Holy Grail with the cart full of bodies just follows him around, waiting for his moment in the sun.
Even before this, I heard someone calling him The Crypt-Keeper! 🙂

Here is a start.
In New York City, around 36 blocks surrounding Times Square will now be declared a gun-free zone.
I did not realize city governments could simply declare the Constitution void in designated areas.
Surprised they didn't designate the area from The Battery to Hell's Gate and between the Hudson and East Rivers as Times Square.
I just declared my house a burglary-free zone. Now I no longer need to lock my doors.
Uh, what's your address?
They have a phone and a pen.
Does this apply to cops and body guards, too?
Whose bodyguards?
This needs to be turned into a tshirt with one minor spelling adjustment.

WTF is a "Sears Video Game System"?
Sears sold a store-brand version of the Atari system in the early 1980s. Yes, they used to be that important and big. They've fallen quite far since.
There should be a lesson here about commercial scale and monopolies, and how quickly things change, but probably not.
They even did that with guns. Still have a Sears 12 guage...errr I did until it fell out of the boat while duck hunting.
I also have a Sears 12ga and a Montgomery Wards 20ga.
They won't come for the Fudd guns. All of the democrats said so.
I used to have a Montgomery Wards 12 ga pump. Excellent working gun.
I've got a Sears bench grinder. Kinda under-powered, actually, unless all you're doing is sharpening a knife.
Along with all semi-autos the Australians banned pump actions as well.
The Brady Bunch want an Australian style gun ownership plan here.
Greatest thing in the world in ~ 1977 was to beg my parents to go to Sears in November when the toyland was setup and we could wait in line in front of the Atari 2600 system to get a chance to play it. No way we could afford to get one of those but I could dream as a child.
I had Adventure. That was the worst fucking title of all time. But I suckled at its teat every day...with my little square avatar...yes, just a square and the sword that was an arrow that I picked up using magnetic force that held it to my square. The the dragons that looked like seahorses would attack through the walls.....
I will never understand how that unseated BMX for so many kids..
Loved that movie when I was a kid. Always got it and Delta Force mixed up in my head, so for years I was sure that Chuck Norris was the star of Mega Force.
Lacey and Larkin appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, arguing that retrying them would be an unconstitutional exercise of double jeopardy.
We all know it's not double jeopardy if some other part of the government tries them.
What if the judge is Alex Trebek? (or his ghost)
National test results released on Thursday showed in stark terms the pandemic's devastating effects on American schoolchildren...
The great memoryholing has commenced.
I thought they all died?
Because right...the PANDEMIC'S devastating effect.
It grinds my gears to no end that in a libertarian magazine they do not by default say "pandemic response" instead of "pandemic".
^ This. I don’t trash the writers much cuz they’re not why I’m here anyway, but this is big. Can’t overstate how badly the response was handled, but just not addressing it at all is fucked up.
People like Jeff might say that they have provided mild criticism. People like joe would say there’s nothing to criticize.
People like fuckin joe really exist. Damn. And no, that’s no defense of “no team” Jeff. He just pretends not to be joe.
Republicans have lots of (rightful) criticism about current public health protocols. But do they actually have any plans to reform public health bureaucracies?
"Dismantle it and prosecute it corrupt tin-pot dictator leaders" is a plan.
Boring and forgettable is much better from a president than actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections.
How certain can you be that Biden is not both of these?
Arresting political rivals and show trials does not undermind democrocy
Know what does?
Mean tweets.
In New York City, around 36 blocks surrounding Times Square will now be declared a gun-free zone.
See, citizens? There's no need for armed self defense. Look at the sign.
Criminals always follow the rules.
I can sense the racism in the assumption that they can't read the sign.
I'm sure they've got a nice pictogram of someone holding a Glock sideways with a big X over it.
That sign just means shoot straight and don't hold it sideways like a dumbass.
Isn’t it racism to assume criminals are of a certain race?
That's why statistics have been banned
Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that Biden had two WHITE and MALE Marines standing behind him?!?! Where are the people of color? Where are the brave womyn? This entire thing was just one giant dog whistle. He may as well have been wearing a MAGA hat.
Unless they tell you how they identify, how can you assume they are male, bigot? (or white for that matter... paging Rachel Dolezal).
The fat tranny "admiral" was initially going to do it, but they didn't want him to drop over from a heart attack from standing up for more than 10 minutes.
how do you know they identify as male?
Republicans have lots of (rightful) criticism about current public health protocols. But do they actually have any plans to reform public health bureaucracies?
Right after they repeal Obamacare.
Fuck you cut their funding sound like a great plan to me. We can certainly question the Republicans' sincerity and ability to follow through with that. I do not, however, see how anyone who understands this issue can criticize them for not having a plan, since the only solution is to raise these agencies to the ground. I don't want a plan. I want someone with an axe.
raise these agencies to the ground
Like a reverse Amish barn-raising?
Perhaps they are now subterranean.
Most Amish live in areas that are way bigger threat of tornados than floods. Seems like a smart strategy.
Hey, that does not sound very compromise-y to me. How about if instead of achieving a complete authoritarian nanny state in ten years, we make it twenty years?
razing is the word you wanted
And replace it with — well, they have no idea.
Too busy culture warring with Team Blue to sit down and come up with any governance ideas.
Statist.
Replace it with nothing. Give the power back to the states where it belongs. The states run public health not the feds you fascist totalitarian fuck.
In that case, poor Florida. Can it withstand another influx of blue locusts escaping the devastation they've wrought back home to vote it in anew there?
Culture warring?
Only you would ignore the call for genocide from the leader of the democratic party. Last night's speech wasn't a call for culture war, it was a call for extermination.
Only you would be alarmed only by the shit Team Blue pulls, but not at all by the shit Team Red pulls.
It was highly inappropriate on Biden’s part, but you exaggerate when you say it was a call for genocide. That’s an insult to people who have truly been threatened with genocide.
I've never seen Team Red call political adversaries enemies of the state.
There are ten stages of genocide. It doesn't happen overnight. Your boy just cruised passed stage #6 with applause from Team Blue. A large portion of this country are being threatened with genocide. The historical comparisons are undeniable.
If you go around calling Biden “my boy” you are engaging in JesseAZ-ism, showing you are not interested in serious political discussion.
Or he’s making obvious observations based on your posting history.
Nobody called anybody “enemies of the state.”
You’re evil.
WTF are you talking about? Enemies of the constitution, the founding principles of our country, the rule of law, etc etc. What would you call that if not an enemy of the state?
For someone who insists she’s not a Democrat, Dee sure spends a lot of time defending Democrats. Even when they’re being disgusting.
Go search the transcript of Biden’s speech yourself, as I did. There’s no use of the word “enemy” or “enemies”. Idaho Bob is making up quotes.
How about “threat” to our way of life, democracy, etc. If you’re a threat to something people care about, you must be neutralized. Playing word games doesn’t make you less evil.
Amazing you criticize nardz, but give the fucking president a pass for similar rhetoric.
I listened to the whole thing. You can't simply proclaim that because the word 'enemy' wasn't specifically used that Biden wasn't calling them enemies of America.
I can claim that that specific word was never used, and I am correct in my claim.
It is telling that the same exact phrasing, using the word “enemy”, is being used by several right-wing commenters here. You are all repeating the same taking points, meant to escalate your victimhood narrative.
By the way, the topic was whether Republicans have any plans for public health. You switched subjects to Biden’s speech, which was something I made zero comment on.
What do you have to say on the actual topic of discussion?
Culture warring with Team Blue is a governance idea. Simply opposing all the bullshit is a plan.
You don't seem to understand that most of us would be fine with a government that does as little as possible. It doesn't take a lot of planning to pull that off.
^This^
Somehow I've been roped into going to "Punk in Drublic" next month. Means my money for your moniker.
"Too busy culture warring with Team Blue to sit down and come up with any governance ideas."

It is now crystal clear Trump is monster. If you still support him, you are a bad person. There is no ambiguity, no wiggle room anymore.
"culture war" means "opposing any one thing democrats push for"
And replace it with — well, they have no idea.
Replace it? Why? get rid of it entirely, like most of the federal gov and its programs.

My very unlibertarian proposal:
Take all the people who really were deeply enthused and motivated by Biden's speech, and ship them all to east and west coastal enclaves--at least the ones who don't already live there. Carve off two new nations.
Then take all the people who really, truly think Trump is a divinely anointed strong man leader, and ship them all to, I don't know, Alabama (sorry, Alabama). Make that a new nation, too.
Then gather all the other people and come to a joint agreement that foundational personal liberties are indeed the most important thing, and that MYOB is the fundamental guideline for social and commercial freedom.
Unity!
You’ll have some issues with all those people in your new country that believe in open borders.
Here's mine.
Take all the people who really were deeply enthused and motivated by Biden's speech, and ship them a single west coast enclave that stretches from LA to San Francisco. Tell them good bye and good luck and cut them off.
The rest of us will then go about our business.
Eventually, we will re-annex the San Angeles People's Republic.
Oh, just as an FYI, this--
Then take all the people who really, truly think Trump is a divinely anointed strong man leader, and ship them all to, I don't know, Alabama (sorry, Alabama). Make that a new nation, too.
is the way a REAL San Angeleno thinks, if you understand what I'm saying.....
So Biden's campaign speech was calling half of America evil fascists who are a threat to democracy and need to be purged from society? A real uniter that guy is.
Biden gave the most divisive, creepy and nasty speech maybe ever given by a President. One can only imagine the kittens reason would be having if Trump had ever given a speech where he called every one who disagreed with him a threat to Democracy and by implication called for their extermination while standing in front of Marines in a red background that looked like it was designed by Leni Riefenstahl's retarded granddaughter. Biden does just that and ENB calls it "a campaign speech". Well okay then.
But but but Biden's press release about the speech said it was about unity. What are you going to believe - a press release or your own stupid ears? Trust the experts, damn it.
It is all about "unity" of real Americans against the evil MAGA. Half of America must unite and destroy the other half.
Yeah, it was all about unity.
When all the MAGA Republicans have been sent to gulags, then we *will* have unity among the remaining half of the nation, Comrade.
Of course it was about Unity. One People. One Nation. One Fuhrer.
I am so stealing that
Please do. It's not a very original thought. The imagery and rhetoric of Biden's Triumph Of The Soul speech was a tad goosestep-y even for some loyalists.
But it fits so perfectly. The truth doesn't have to be original and in fact often isn't.
Watch the moment CNN slowly adjusts the camera settings when the blood-red lighting behind Dark Brandon is looking a little too authoritarian.
By the end, the stripes on the American flag are pinkish-purple.
https://mobile.twitter.com/MiaCathell/status/1565533698795208704
Almost like CNN is being directed by Biden's propagandists.
“…. even for some loyalists.”
I dunno. The Brandon “loyalists” I know don’t think he went far enough. They’re very hateful people.
looks like half the country got upgraded from 'deplorables' to 'fascists'
Better deplatform them, cancel their credit cards, freeze their bank accounts and publish their addresses because of the danger, right?
So, when does it go from rhetoric to actually rounding everyone up?
Hey Shrike and Jeff! Did they give you guys a date for it yet?
This is my exact take from The Party. Last night went from othering to something darker, more sinister. I honestly think we'll see Trump in chains, paraded in front of CNN cameras, charged with something like sedition or treason. Not even being hyperbolic.
I do too. They're definitely going to perp walk Trump in front of the cameras before the election.
The charges will be indistinct and probably eventually dropped, but the imagery is what will be important for them.
I expect it will be for some vague offense of dubious constitutionality that members of both parties have flagrantly ignored for the past half century (e.g., Logan Act, classification of presidential documents, privilege disputes, etc.).
Trump will be tried for the same crimes k committed in the trial
I don’t think so. That could backfire. I think they’re hoping that keeping a cloud over him is enough for now. I think they’d rather outlast him than imprison him as long as that still works. Big losses in November might require a new strategy for 24 however.
For now, they’re still trying to pretend they’re not the ones who “go low”. Haha.
“….a date for it yet?”
As the rev likes to say, it’s for as long as our betters permit. Getting more specific leads to miscalculations like climate alarmism predictions.
Besides, they don’t wanna spoil the surprise!
Unable to defend her candidate's Hitleresqe speech she ducks for cover and declares it boring, forgettable and irrelevant. But still offers redemption because Hitlerden is sure better than that scary Orange Man.
“Campaign speech.” Well, sure.
You know who else launched a campaign on September 1?
" Maybe. But that doesn't detract from the moral bankruptcy of it—and also undercuts Democratic claims that MAGA Republicans are existentially dangerous to democracy and civilized society."
You don't get it. Democrats are correct that Republicans, and all non-compliant seditious rebels, are existentially dangerous to the nanny state, private-public partner economy, elite-managed one-world utopian vision that Democrats seek.
You don't get it. Democrats are correct that Republicans, and all non-compliant seditious rebels, are existentially dangerous to the nanny state, private-public partner economy, elite-managed one-world utopian vision that Democrats seek.
The truth is that they are nothing like that. If only we had a Republican party that was as this describes. Instead we have a pretty bland party that can at best be depended on to stop the Democratic insanity for a few years while making the odd change at the margin.
One would think that the response of a "libertarian" magazine to such a charge against Republicans would be either to take it seriously and think "gee maybe Republicans are not so bad afterall" or see it for the ridiculous lie that it is and laugh at it.
Umm, I like that my vote is dangerous to the Nanny state. Unfortunately, sometimes the best application of that miniscule power is with the Republican Party.
The voters are like that, though. Which is why the party is at war with its own voters.
OMG Biden's speech was awesome! Great visuals too! 🙂

Yeah, very 1930s, central European of them.
The Nazis had more style. Even they would have found last night boorish and over the top.
Biden isn't nearly popular enough to get someone like Hugo Boss onboard.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Biden well lit, with dark red in the background — everything about it screamed anti-fascist to me.

Maybe but as noted above not a single BPOC or Trans individual was on the stage. Sorry but racist, homophobic and trans exclusionary is not a good look for the commander in chief.
Jonah Goldberg on Twitter last night said he agreed with "nearly all of what Biden said".
The guy who got famous writing a book that really unfairly slandered Democrats as fascists, falls right into line and goose steps as ordered the moment a Democratic President really does go fascist.
Irony really is ironic sometimes.
A lot of "conservatives" made a new niche for them selves by simply being Anti-Trump. He left NRO to start his own anti-Trump place, the Dispatch, sort of a cut rate Bulwark.
The question is, how many were generally broken by TDS and how many just do it because they are making money off of it? (The same could probably be said for extreme Trump supporters)
"There's a theory going around that Democrats want to keep focus on Trump—with the January 6 hearings, the Mar-a-Lago raid, etc.—so that he'll decide to run again in 2024"
Huh? That can't be right. Mr. Buttplug told us way back in May 2021 that Drumpf would go to prison for a classified documents scandal that broke in August 2022. He obviously can't run for President from behind bars.
No, the 2024 nomination is between Ron DeSantis and Liz Cheney. And we know who our benefactor Charles Koch prefers.
#LizCheney2024

actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections.
Wait—which party are you talking about?
Dare I sat it, both?
"say it"
Starts with a "D" and rhymes with "rats"?
A campaign speech? Nah, a display of the damage done by a raging case of TDS:
"Biden sounds newly strong alarm: Trumpism menaces democracy"
[...]
" President Joe Biden charged in a prime-time address that the “extreme ideology” of Donald Trump and his adherents “threatens the very foundation of our republic,” as he summoned Americans of all stripes to help counter what he sketched as dark forces within the Republican Party trying to subvert democracy..."
https://www.bangordailynews.com/2022/09/02/national-politics/biden-trumpism-warning/
Finally find someone who was 'armed' - with an aluminum tube flagpole:
"Ex-NYPD officer gets 10 years in prison for U.S. Capitol attack"
[...]
"A retired New York Police Department officer was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison for attacking the U.S. Capitol and using a metal flagpole to assault one of the police officers trying to hold off a mob of Donald Trump supporters...."
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ex-nypd-officer-gets-10-years-in-prison-for-u-s-capitol-attack/ar-AA11n301
That is the same sentence the BLM thug in Minneapolis got for setting fire to a building which resulted in a death.
Good thing we don't have two sets of laws in this country, one for leftists and one for everyone else.
You mean, one for Resistance! heroes, and one for everyone else.
There's also the one guy who had a gun that he didn't draw, nobody saw, and people only knew about it because he later mentioned it to his son.
"National test results released on Thursday showed in stark terms the hysterical and irrational overreaction to the pandemic's devastating effects on American schoolchildren"
Fixed it.
"do not respect the Constitution," "do not believe in the rule of law," "do not recognize the will of the people," and "represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic," said Biden, describing the entire Federal government.
"...In the speech, Biden repeatedly distinguished mainstream Republicans, who he implied believe in all the good American principles that Democrats do, from MAGA Republicans..."
So we have Liz Cheney and every other R?
"Mainstream" means Republicans who won't actually change anything if elected. The problem is not that people are Republicans. It is that they are Republicans and expect the Republican Party to actually stand for something and change things when they win elections.
They might actually oppose something droolin' Joe does!
Trying to win an election is an attempt to overthrow the government, which is INSURRECTION!
If you want to understand who he's talking about, you might look at the Alaskans who would vote for a Democrat before Palin.
They're perhaps a minority of the Republican party. But there are plenty of people who favor conservative policy while rejecting the kind of idiocratic extremism currently dominating GOP politics.
Alaskans didn't vote for a Democrat over Palin. They voted for Palin. Thanks to "ranked choice voting" the Democrat won because more people put the Democrat second.
The midterms are going to be a disaster for the fuhrer and his party. You guys are going to have to just dissolve the people and get a new one.
With political ignorance like this, it's no wonder that Trump has such a committed fan base. But it seems you don't understand how RCV works.
Lots of Alaskans voted for Palin, sure. 58.9k put her as their first choice. Another 27k put Beglich down for their first choice, but Palin as their second. So Palin got a total of 85.9k first or second-choice votes.
Lots of Alaskans voted for Peltola. 75.7k put her as their first choice. But another 15.4k put Beglich first, and Peltola second. That means that, while a majority of Beglich voters would have preferred Palin over Peltola, more than a third preferred Peltola over Palin. Those voters are the ones who put Peltola over the top.
There's another 11k who had "exhausted" their ballots after Beglich. If they had all gone for Palin, then she would have won. So one might ask why they didn't do that.
The fact is that 60% voted for a Republican candidate, 40% voted for a Democrat. The Democrat got in.
And the Democrat got the plurality of the vote in the first round.
You know the line that always gets trotted out, about the electoral college? That's just not how it works, etc.? Same goes here. That "60% for a Republican candidate" is meaningless in RCV, unless there's only one Republican candidate. Same goes for my point about Peltola getting a "plurality" of the vote in the first round. That's just not how you win in RCV.
60% isn't a majority majority. No one says that the Democrat wins in an actual vote. Just stop it.
Hey, it's not my fault that Palin was a poor-quality candidate.
That isn't how it works. It is assumed that people vote for individual people not parties.
If it was all about parties, we'd have ballots that listed parties not individuals.
"The fact is that 60% voted for a Republican candidate, 40% voted for a Democrat. The Democrat got in."
So what? This is really weak tea. The evidence indicates that if there had been a runoff (which happens in traditional cases), Palin would not have won. All RCV did was handle the run-off automatically instead of waiting another 6 weeks to do a second election.
In the initial primary vote 73% of Alaskans voted for someone other than Sarah Palin.
You make this point well.
Simple Simon's counting on some good ol' electoral fortifying this fall.
You know the funny thing? RCV would move us a lot further, a lot faster, in favor of third-party politicians - which seems to be something that Reason spends a lot of time complaining about.
Here in NYC, we used RCV to select our mayoral candidates. While Adams is a clown, and I voted against him, RCV turned out to be a good way of giving Democratic voters their preference. He was chosen by a broad, multiracial coalition of voters who wanted a stronger anti-crime message, a "return to establishment" politics, a more centrist platform.
There's no reason any libertarian-leaning Republican should fear RCV. All you have to do is know how to do it. Put your preferred candidate first, your back-up candidates next. You can vote for your preferred libertarian first, then the Republican second, if that's what you'd accept if you didn't get your first pick. It's a great system.
The only reason any Republican opposes that kind of system, in this country, is that on some level they understand that their coalition is weakening. Democrats are pitching for their "centrist" wing, and if they lose it, they can't win. So they're manipulating the rules at every level to try to keep the populist "base" together with the "centrists."
::claims RCV would give more heft to third parties::
::points out that the Democrat was elected yet again::
I'm sure it made sense to him.
I'm just going to let his comment stand as its own refutation.
Fuck off and die, asswipe.
You know the funny thing? RCV would move us a lot further, a lot faster, in favor of third-party politicians
No. It wouldn't.
The purpose of RCV is to get leftists elected 'legitimately'. That is what it's for.
The purpose of jungle primaries is to get leftists elected.
The purpose of non-partisan races is to get leftists elected.
The purpose of universal mail in balloting is to get leftists elected
Whatever it takes to make it more difficult for people to see a clear path from vote to winner is there to get leftists elected.
"Alaskans didn't vote for a Democrat over Palin. They voted for Palin. "
This is absolutely wrong. At no time did Palin get more votes than Petola.
In the very first round, the primary, the leftist came in fourth. Palin came in first.
RCV is designed to use Republican prevalence against them.
In Florida, the Dem gubernatorial primary got 1.4 million votes total. The Republican primary got 1.6 million. But DeSantis was unopposed. No one needed to vote at all.
In the Alaskan primary more people voted for Republicans than voted for Democrats. And even with the vote split far more on the Republican side, Palin still got 4X what Petola got.
Yet somehow, Petola is in office.
That was the primary. Not the election. At no time in the election did Palin get more votes than Peltola
"In the Alaskan primary more people voted for Republicans than voted for Democrats."
Which means nothing. People aren't electing a party, they are electing a person. And had those people really wanted ANY republican in the office, then Palin would have been their second choice. But she wasn't their second voice, so very obviously people weren't voting for "a republican".
"And even with the vote split far more on the Republican side, Palin still got 4X what Petola got."
This is ridiculous. It was a primary. That shit happens all the time in primaries. And Palin got *27%* total of the vote. This really is as bad as people saying Gore (or Clinton) ought to be president because more people voted for them. It is neither technically nor morally correct.
Stuff your TDS up your ass, steaming pile of shit.
The only acceptable Republicans are the ones who are indistinguishable from normie democrats.

It doesn't. But when you add places like Chicago to the aggregate, it makes the average much higher.

We have a Fed...why?
"We can't put out this fire we started!"
Wait, what??? This is the same Fed that maintained QE (expanding money supply at exponential rates) well into the Trump years when the economy was healthy and expanding on its own?
I have my own questions about whether QE was ever necessary but the idea it was needed after about 2012 is absurd.

""But that doesn't detract from the moral bankruptcy of it—and also undercuts Democratic claims that MAGA Republicans are existentially dangerous to democracy and civilized society. If that were true, wouldn't it be more important to do anything possible to keep them out of office?""
To do anything possible? Like cheat in an election?
I don't believe the election was stolen from Trump. But I can see why people would believe it.
Is it plausible that the party of get him out by any means would resort to cheating when every other means failed.
If Biden truly got all those votes the last time, would he be this worried about Trump and his supporters?
Look what worrying did to Nixon. The difference being, Nixon didn’t have a DOJ and an FBI at his disposal, like Biden apparently has.
And Nixon actually did win in a landslide.
I maintain the election was rigged to ensure Biden's victory, but not stolen. The two are not the same thing, yet it is easy to conflate the two so it is perfectly understandable if people believe it was stolen.
They are just articulating the (legitimate) feeling that something was 'off' in the way the election was one that caused the results to be different than they would have been if the rules hadn't been changed.
Most of the outrage is because the tactics used came as a shock to anyone who doesn't already live in a Blue state where they've been used repeatedly (see Gregoire vs. Rossi) and we've become resigned to them.

to the delight of every liberal, and the surprise of no one
Well, yeah, this was why that Facebook "whistleblower" was a total work--the whole point was to jawbone Facebook in to censoring more, because they weren't doing it as much as the administration wanted it to.
Emails. Because, the actual POTUS telling us during press conference he was ACTUALLY doing this wasn't clear enough for Reason Editors and progressives. The same, I know.

"There’s nothing unusual or wrong with a President delivering a political speech — it’s inherent in the job description — but doing it against a backdrop of two Marines standing at attention and the Marine Band is a break with White House traditions."
This is what every speech after a coup looks like: a president flanked by uniformed soldiers and bathed in red light as he delivers an address that every network must carry.

Look at the photo of Biden in there. Fuck, it creeps me out with the vibe coming through.
Some people are saying that this is part of some plan to bait Trump supporters into rioting. Maybe. I think it is more likely that there is no plan and Biden is just fucking nuts.
Why would something like this bait Trump supporters in to rioting? As much of a drama queen as Lindsay Graham is, he's a lot closer to the truth in warning that it would happen if Trump is brought up on charges by the DoJ, and even then it probably would be a bunch of low-energy rallies with huge Antifa-led counterprotests.
The right isn't as stupid as the left. Or at least not the far right. They won't go out and burn down their own neighborhoods. They will take revenge in much more subtle and dangerous ways that rioting. They will just stop paying their taxes and stop playing by the rules. And that is a hell of a lot more dangerous than any riot.

That's weird because this just looked like "Liberal Fascism" to me.
Liberal Fascism was a good book. It's disappointing but predictable that its neocon author has become exactly who he warned us about.
Jonah Goldberg suddenly understands the appeal of wearing a snazzy uniform and being a part of a large cause to purge the nation of the lesser races.
Also TDS.
And greed. He is on someone's payroll and being paid to spread the talking points and concern troll Republicans. What a pathetic life that must be.
Liberal Fascism was a good book
I found it to be rather tedious and question-begging myself, and checked out about 1/3 of the way through. It's really just a TLDR version of "Dems R Da Reel __________" that the National Review and Weekly Standard crowds parroted for most of the post-Y2K period. It's biggest weakness is the complete obliviousness to the left's will to power, and the assumption that they can be cowed by accusations of hypocrisy.
It was very tedious and an unfair slander against Democrats. Yes, Democrats like central planning and thought things like the Autobahn were pretty neat. They are certainly guilty of not understanding the full nature of Hitler and likely for being willfully naïve. They were not, however, fascist within any reasonable meaning of the term. I can honestly say I thought that book was crap when it came out. My mistake was not admitting to myself what that said about the book's author and pretending Goldberg was still someone worth paying attention to after writing such a bullshit book.
Goldberg is way too much of a lightweight to construct substantive long-form works. I clearly remember that he didn't really take off as a go-to pundit for the right until he started his NR blog feature. The format allowed him to seem more intelligent than he really is because it accentuated his skill at glib, snarky takes. Anything longer than a couple of paragraphs, and he quickly becomes repetitive, with gigantic holes in his thesis.
He's clever enough if you're looking for some pithy catchphrase that doesn't actually mean anything; his writing style is practically made for Twitter, which is where he thrives.

Passed on Biden's speech last night, for a real presidential address.
Calvin Coolidge's Address at William & Mary College
Title: States’ Rights and National Unity
Date: May 15, 1926
Excerpt:
It is impossible to lay too much emphasis upon the necessity of making all our political action of the Federal Government harmonize with the principle of national unity. For many years now this course has been greatly impeded from the fact that those who substantially think alike have so oftentimes been unable to act alike. Our country ought to be done with all sectional divisions and all actions based upon geographical lines. Washington warned us against that danger in his Farewell Address. Experience has time and again demonstrated the soundness of his advice and the breadth of his wisdom. It would be difficult to suggest anything more likely to enhance the progress of our country than united political action in all parts of the Nation in accord with the advice of Washington for the support and maintenance of those principles of sound economics and stable constitutional government in which they so substantially agree. All sections have the same community of interests, both in theory and in fact, and they ought to have a community in political action. We can not deny that we are all Americans. To attempt to proceed upon any other theory can only end in disaster. No policy can ever be a success which does not contemplate this as one country.
He was the best president ever.
So says Mike "We need to replace government programs before we can dismantle them" Laursen.
So - just to be clear - Reason agrees that the "mainstream Republican party" is on the side of memory-holing attempts by foreign governments to swing American elections, subordinating national security to domestic political priorities, engaging in a coordinated attempt to create confusion and chaos around an election so as to enable a seizure of power contrary to the will of a majority of Americans (even as expressed through a strongly counter-majoritarian electoral process), prompting a violent takeover of the Capitol building to further that end, electing poor-quality, extremist candidates to control future elections when that doesn't work, anonymously threatening election officials when they refuse to comply with the program, and so on?
The same "mainstream Republican party" that is also actively working in multiple state governments to impose draconian restrictions on abortion rights, to ban books and purify school curricula so that they're consistent with Republican orthodoxy, to criminalize parents of trans youth, to revisit battles over same-sex relationships, to penalize companies that have the temerity to oppose the Republican agenda (on fossil fuels, on voting rights, on abortion rights, etc., etc.), to limit the franchise by imposing voting restrictions carefully tailored to suit how their own constituencies vote, and on and on? While playing defense for a former president whose mishandling of top secret government information just-so-happens to have coincided with a significant trend of spies getting killed?
If that's the "mainstream Republican party," then Biden is absolutely correct to claim that they're a threat to American democracy.
One party, one nation, one people, one fuhrer!!
You tell them Simon. When do we get our snazzy uniforms? Does that come later or do we get them now?
It's an awful strange thing to say about Biden's speech, when his point throughout was for people to vote.
For Democrats, sure. We can debate the propriety of the president's coming out with a rather loaded campaign message, in the venue that he chose.
But if we have a free and fair election in November, and Republicans still win, what do you think Biden will do?
It's an awful strange thing to say about Biden's speech, when his point throughout was for people to vote.
No, the point was to call out anyone who disagrees with him as guilty of treason and no longer a part of the country. The only strange thing here is that you could think anyone is stupid enough to believe your claims otherwise.
But if we have a free and fair election in November, and Republicans still win, what do you think Biden will do?
Ignore Congress and continue to break the law and use DOJ as his personal Gestapo. The same thing he has been doing all along.
If the Democrats don't win in 24, Biden or whoever is controlling him, likely will not leave power peacefully. Biden made that clear last night. Anyone who doesn't support him is guilty of treason and thus could never be allowed to take office.
If the Democrats don't win in 24, Biden or whoever is controlling him, likely will not leave power peacefully. Biden made that clear last night. Anyone who doesn't support him is guilty of treason and thus could never be allowed to take office.
They weren't going to do it in 2020, either, as Time Magazine so clearly outlined. Even before that article was published which showed what Time quite literally called a "cabal" and a "conspiracy" to make sure Trump didn't take the seat again, the Biden team was openly wargaming scenarios in which they didn't concede, and Hillary was blatantly telling them that they shouldn't.
If Trump had actually won, I guarantee the left would have been the ones storming the Capital on January 6th, and the inauguration would have turned in to an absolute shitshow.
The left would have stormed the capitol and burned it down. When a Republican wins in 24 and that is a very good bet, that is exactly what they will do. They will have a full on insurrection. You know they are going to do that if for no other reason they keep claiming the Republicans did it. Why would they do that when everyone knows it isn't true? Because they want to rationalize doing it for real themselves in 24.
No, the point was to call out anyone who disagrees with him as guilty of treason and no longer a part of the country.
Look, you can find the words he actually used. He didn't say that. If you inferred that from what he said, then perhaps you are guilty of treason, since you apparently are on the side of people promising violence if they don't get their way.

Wow, that's a lot of debunked establishment left conspiracy theories and phony invective packed into one comment.
When there's so many lies and propaganda tossed at you all at once it's hard to know where to begin...
I believe this style of rhetorical technique is called Gish gallop.
Nothing I said has been "debunked." I in fact steered clear of characterizations or assertions that are likely factual but not yet shown by public evidence. Everything I said is well-documented - just superficially denied by people like you.
You can choose to wave off the litany of things that Republicans and Trump are in favor of, that are clearly a threat to our country, its institutions, and our democracy. I frankly don't expect anything less of the neo-Nazis who occupy Reason's main commenter pages.
Everything you said has been debunked. Russia didn't influence anything. The whole thing was a hoax invented by the White House and Hillary Clinton. Everyone knows that. If you are going to lie, try telling lies someone might believe.
Russia hacked the DNC. They got internal emails that they intended to release in a way to embarrass the Clinton campaign. They engaged in information warfare designed to increase political division and frustrate progressive would-be voters. They reached out to the Trump campaign to try to coordinate on their efforts.
We don't know to what extent Trump and his campaign actively participated in those efforts. But we know they occurred. And we know that Trump engaged in several acts of obstruction that have limited our ability to know how much he and his campaign participated.
Now, you may maintain that all of that - the Senate findings, the Mueller Report, etc. - is all a "hoax." But you will need to explain how you know that. Because that would seem to suggest that you have superior knowledge of what happened behind closed doors than any of those people do.
You do realize that the whole "Russia hacked the DNC" narrative is based on what the DNC itself was saying, right? They didn't let the feds investigate, and the feds let them not let the feds investigate, which was kind of crazy if it actually was thought to be the Russians.
Everything we know is based on what the DNC's own employees told people happened.
You can choose to wave off the litany of things that Republicans and Trump are in favor of, that are clearly a threat to our country, its institutions, and our democracy. I frankly don't expect anything less of the neo-Nazis who occupy Reason's main commenter pages.
It's not "our democracy" or "our institutions" that it's a threat to, it's YOUR democracy and YOUR institutions. Fuck, your side doesn't even LIKE this country, so it's not YOUR country, either. You just don't like it when your agenda is vigorously resisted, which is why you think anyone who does so is a fascist that's trying to keep the glorious marxist utopia from coming about.
"I frankly don't expect anything less of the neo-Nazis who occupy Reason's main commenter pages."

lol
Wow! Everything is so mother fucking terrible and unfair!!!!
“Draconian”. The drama queens love this word. So cliche’.
So wait....Let me get this right.
ENB correctly points out that ""mainstream" Republicans today are MAGA Republicans." That is, all those millions of Americans who identify as Republican are the people Biden was talking about, even if Biden demurs that he isn't really talking about them.
And we have the President of the United States going on the air to tell the country that these millions of republicans, ""do not respect the Constitution," "do not believe in the rule of law," "do not recognize the will of the people," and "represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic," said Biden. They "refuse to accept the results of a free election," "promote authoritarian leaders," and "fan the flames of political violence.""
As ENB tepidly admits, Biden's caricature of these republicans is incorrect. But there is no doubt in her (or mind) that Biden's speech was "clearly designed to rally people...against Republicans". Not against a fringe, but against Republicans, period. MILLIONS of American citizens. And he declared them all threats to the republic.
And this...to ENB..." was boring and entirely forgettable." Got that? The president going up on stage and demanding that 25 - 35% of the country are enemies of the republic is a ho hum, forgettable thing. Contrast that with the endless tut-tutting and hand wringing when Trump declared "Fake news" the "enemy of the people".
What is bizarre is that I think even ENB realizes how stretched and implausible her hand waving really is. Because she follows up at the very end of the screed and says, that "perhaps" it is "upsetting" after all that this rhetoric is being used.
SMH.
And this...to ENB..." was boring and entirely forgettable."
That tells you how horrible of a speech it was. Reason never criticizes Democrats without the "but Republicans are just as bad" qualifier. In this case, the Republicans were not involved. So, she couldn't make that qualifier. But the speech was so bad, there is no defending it. So, she goes to the tried and true "nothing to see here" "it was boring and forgettable" trope.
Well said.
Yeah... pretty stark contrast.
Trump said "You're fake news" to a CNN reporter. You know, when CNN was reporting lies about Trump as if they were facts, in the news.
And Reason is unanimous that this was an existential threat to the republic and freedom of the press, because when the chief executive who controls the FBI says you are fake news, that is a direct threat.
Matt Welch got comically red-faced as spittle flew from his lips trying to speak about the outrage.
But Biden, who is documented to have participated in ordering the FBI to frame incoming national security advisor Flynn for a crime, calls for the FBI to investigate and track people who speak at school board meetings as terrorists, who immediately directed the FBI to label all right wing groups as the number one threat to America.... that guy... when he uses rhetoric like using fighter jets to kill supporters of the second amendment and calls Republicans dangerous fascists who seek to destroy America, no big deal, move along, nothing to see here, business as usual....
ENB sounds like the CNN reporter in front of the burning building talking about the mostly peaceful protest.
We have been warning that they are using social media to suppress opposition voices for a decade and a half... the White House just got caught actually directing censorship via social media platforms... we know the FBI was involved in directing censorship in the last election....
Ho hum. Nothing to see here.
Trump called a liar a liar and Reason blew a gasket that a president dare comment on anything the press might do.
Biden is using the FBI to target enemies.. not just rhetorically... and they also have a history of using the IRS. But the worst this could possibly be is "just a campaign speech"
If that is all it was, it was actually a crime, by the way. This was an official white house event. 100% taxpayer funded. The White House vehemently denied that this was a campaign event at all. Because if it was, using taxpayer funds is illegal.
Missed that angle too.
that guy... when he uses rhetoric like using fighter jets to kill supporters
Side comment, the President, and his supporters keep pointing out that the second amendment is not useful in deterring the government because you'd be turned into a stain on the ground by the overwhelming might of the US Military.
Yet a group of people sitting in the speaker's char, throwing papers around and shouting while in bear costumes were a grave threat to the foundations of the American Republic.
It's called doublethink. It's exactly the same process that allows them to believe a speech justifying the murder of half of the country is unifying.
TDS has broken ENB & Reason Editors. Along with most of the MSM. When you understand that, as a group of far left progressives, they believe the ends justify the means.
With this in mind, their behavior makes perfect sense. It's deplorable, but you can understand it.
And we have the President of the United States going on the air to tell the country that these millions of republicans, ""do not respect the Constitution," "do not believe in the rule of law," "do not recognize the will of the people," and "represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic," said Biden. "I wish he was wrong, but he's not. You see it every day in these comments."
You see every day in these comments that half the fucking country "represents an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic"?
That is absolutely delusional. Like 50 people post in these comments. 50.
"Mainstream" vs "MAGAt" republicans is a matter of semantics and someone needs to define terms. Biden meant by "mainstream" what the party used to be and what many of it's leaders (mostly senators) still are, while the author means the majority of present day Republicans voters - the base - and what many of it's leaders are but also what the rest pretend to be to avoid being primaryed. The latter wouldn't piss on Trump if he was on fire, unless someone is looking who would report on the incident. The base chose Trump in 2016, not the leadership, and so in this case the lunatics are indeed running the asylum, and these are some ignorant cult member fucks. We'll see how long this reactionary and resentment driven movement of a demographic who thinks they are dying and losing out in modern America lasts, but it is not the future unless the American future is a turtle fully withdrawn on the side of the road hiding from the unending traffic.

Yes, continue to eat his shit Shreek. It is what you do. If I were a better person, I would feel bad for you. Instead, I just find it funny that someone could be as degraded and pathetic as you appear to be.
Fuck off.
Powerful argument Don't. Give me a little time to consider it.
I really hope that you do.
It wasn’t an argument.
Please make sure to spend some time outdoors this weekend, as it will increase the chance of you getting hit by a bus.
This is the most honest thing Joe has ever posted here and exposes not only his mentality, but that of other establishment left bien pensants.
As Joe says, Biden didn't call out some fringe, he called out the base. He called 70 million Americans a "clear and present danger" to the United States of America.
That's what President's do when they're authorizing drone strikes.
He's setting the stage for a Hitlerian purge of the United States... and look at how excited Joe is.
Mother, I think we agree, but no need for drones, Hitler, or the other nightmare fantasies you MAGAts think are aimed at you. Biden almost doubled Trump's numbers among those 18-35 in the 2020 election. You're the past.
Uh, 18-35s have mostly voted Democrat for decades, you dumb mook.
If the voting age was raised to 30, Democrats would never win another election.
I think I recall that we agreed 25 was actually a good starting point, as if you weren't old enough to run for Congress, you shouldn't be voting for them.
Works for me.
But they can buy AR-15s and shoot up schools at 18, right?
Most school shootings are done with handguns, idjit.
Sure, Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Texas are nothing to worry about and WGAF about those kids anyway.
As if you give a damn about kids shot in your deep blue urban shitholes. Stop play-acting.
What do they use in the glorious deep blue urban utopias?
Oooh, I forgot! Everyone votes for Democrats. The GOP has won 1 popular vote for President since 1988 and that was in 2004 when they had the advantage of an incumbency which they also didn't win - the SC gave it to them.
Well, sure, the mentally ill tend to flock to each other.
People vote for Democrats until they get a decent job or fully mature into adulthood (which many people never do).

Does ADM report their profits in corn fields? Do banks report their profits at the branch offices where people do their banking? Does VISA report their profits over the entire country?
Yes, I can easily believe that Biden counties account for the corporate headquarters of most large companies.
"The GOP has won 1 popular vote for President"
Let me know when that matters when deciding who becomes the president.
Go fuck yourself, shit-weasel.
Dude, you're totally wrong. Republicans are now the Trump tribe. Kiss the ring or be thrown to the lions.
If this is our semi-senile president, how bad will it get when he goes full bore?
There has got to be more than a few Dems in the House and Senate who are thinking 25th amendment. Kamala is looking better every day.
I think so too. He is nuts. And they know he is nuts. That is why the networks didn't broadcast the speech and the talking points this morning are "it was just a campaign speech and not worth talking about".
Watching Biden you might wonder, "who is actually in charge?" The answer is it's the same people who were already in charge, and Kamala wont change that.
It's the old Obama gang, now with more neocons!!
Yeah, we're really pissed about all the legislation he's getting passed.
Lots of legislation being passed is not a good thing.
Biden is harking back to an era of "mainstream" Republicanism that no longer exists.
Yup. Which is sad. I used to vote for those guys every now and then. No more.
There is a famous article from the early 40s called "Who Goes Nazi". In it the author explains how lots of people you wouldn't expect will in fact go full fascist when the time comes.
The article remains as true today as it was then. There is something about designating an "other" to hate that many people find irresistible. You finally feel like you belong don't you Sarcasmic? You are part of the smart set that is doing something about the evil other that is ruining America.
This never ends well.
There is something about designating an "other" to hate that many people find irresistible.
You show it here every day with your deep hatred of anyone who dares to criticize Trump.
I don't at all. Like all people suffering from your condition, you project your own actions onto everyone around you as a way of rationalizing what you in your heart know is wrong.
You have no self awareness at all.
This is just too rich.
Oh wow!
Yeah, but…
You finally feel like you belong don't you Sarcasmic?
No, actually. Because I'm not a member of either tribe. You on the other hand have millions of fellow haters on your side, ready to go out and murder anyone with a Biden sticker on their car. It's pretty ironic that you're calling out others for being Nazis when it's your team that wants to kill people over politics.
You are absolutely a member of the left's tribe. Stop living in denial. Your "pox on both houses" act is fooling no one. It is just you virtue signaling that you are not part of the designated "enemy" and are part of the good guys.
This is how totalitarian states are created; appealing to the vanity and desire to fit in of people like you.
Talk about projection. You see the world as two teams. Team Trump and "other," which is the object of your hatred.
You're the people you're talking about.
Don't you spend all day neatly dividing the commentariat into exactly those 2 camps?
Nope.
lol
When I want your opinion I'll shit on some french fries and call it poutine.
You probably would, you're a strange little man.
He's technically correct, he spends part of his day getting drunk so I was a little extreme in saying he spends ALL day here being a hypocrite.
You're winning big points with the trolls today!

I like to stir shit up. So what.
I am the guy saying "don't demonize half the country" and you are the one saying "those fucking Trumptards deserve it" but somehow I am the one who has gone Nazi.
Whatever gets you through the night sweetheart.
I am the guy saying "don't demonize half the country"
You're the guy saying don't demonize MY half of the country, and the rest are demons!
you are the one saying "those fucking Trumptards deserve it"
Um, no. I never said anything of the sort.
but somehow I am the one who has gone Nazi.
Just pointing out how the words you used to describe me actually describe the guy in the mirror.
If what you said were correct, I'd support lowering the voting age to keep Democrats in a perpetual majority. Yet just above I agreed with Red Rocks that it should be raised.
My support for the left is all in your head because anyone who doesn't support Trump is the enemy. The "other" that becomes the scapegoat when the mass murder starts.
I'm not sure why I need to keep repeating this, but the whole "liberal/conservative" political dichotomy is fucking dead as disco, and has been for some time.
This is a political realignment, and it's still shaking out, but when it's settled, the divide is going to be nationalists vs. globalists for the next few generations. Liberal/conservative doesn't even apply here anymore; that's a 20th-century construct based on very specific geo-political and socio-economic factors of the time.
The same thing happened during the decades when Rome morphed from a corrupt, dysfunctional Republic in to a de facto imperium--you were either a populare or an optimate.
I don't know about that.
I am seeing a lot of open talk about bringing communism to America. Passionate defenses of communism as an ideology and vehement denials that the Soviets or the Maoists were ever communist. They even deny Castro and Chavez. Those guys betrayed Lennin and Marx.
This is the AOC wing... this is Antifa and BLM.
The Kamala faction of the mainstream think they are playing the divide and conquer game, ginning up their outrage for a mob of useful idiots.
They had best be careful, as those collaborators are the first against the wall.
I am seeing a lot of open talk about bringing communism to America.
Communism IS globalist--it's a hermetical belief system that all property around the world should be abolished, in order to return to the true social state of community before the division of labor took place. That's why these freaks are so hung up on world government tropes and institutions like the Paris Accords, the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the International Monetary Fund, etc., and why the World Economic Forum openly promoted the elimination of private property in that infamous "you will own nothing, and be happy" video they put out a couple years ago. They literally envision a world under a single system where everyone (with a few elect leaders, of course, just like Marx proposed) lives under the exact same conditions, under a global entity.
That's been going on for a long time. Remember NAFTA and all the crying about globalization?
NAFTA is a different sort of animal from what I listed above. The two aren't even in the same universe from a functional or ideological standpoint.
I'm w/ Cyto. There's the authoritarian vs individual/libertarian scale, then there's the social and fiscal scales where conservative vs progressive can still be useful descriptions. Yes, there can be overlap.
On the authoritarian vs liberty scale, there is you, me and maybe 3 guys from the comments over on the liberty side. And you got all of team D, all of team R, plus the greens and the commies over on the authoritarianism side.
When a quasi-socialist like Glenn Greenwald is the closest thing we have to a national voice for liberty, you know things are bleak.
Pure bloods vs. Jews, you mean.
What the fuck is a globalist? Please explain.
Pure bloods vs. Jews, you mean.
Whoa, hey, cool it with the anti-Semitism, there, faggot.
What the fuck is a globalist? Please explain.
Your side.
After reading this article all I know is if Biden were a 'Libertarian' he would have given the speech in German.
Hard to follow the meaning of your comment. Normally, a reference to German would be taken as a reference to Hitler or Nazis, but that makes no sense since ENB’s blog post wasn’t supportive of Biden or fascism or Naziism.
Is there a new trolling technique I'm not aware of that involves acting autistically literal in order to diminish a joke?
It's not exactly new. He's been doing it for years.
Some in the European Union want to ban anyone born after 2010 from ever buying nicotine products.
And there's nothing else of interest going on in the EU right now, certainly not to libertarians!
Angry political speech, demonizing opponents, blood red background, military guards on either side... all Biden was missing was a stylish little toothbrush mustache.
What a vile little man.

That speech reminds me of a phrase that Youtuber Viva Frei is fond of: "confession through projection."

Not the worst I've seen from him, but it's up there.
The maudlin self-pity, the emotional appeals, the crazed accusations. He has to be a Texas Mickey and a case of beer in at that point.
I would think he was 13 except for I have been watching him post for 5 years and he would have to be at least 18 by now. His ex-wife and daughter probably puts him in his 40s. Some people just can't mature past middle school.
I'm glad we had that conversation. You made it clear that every argument you make is against me as a person, not against what I say. You've got no desire to discuss topics or ideas. Just people.
Which means I have no use for you. Have fun with the rest of the girls!
You've got no desire to discuss topics or ideas. Just people.
This is a bizarre insult from someone who claims to fuck other commenters mothers and homophobically insist they give blowjobs to each other.
What excellent Ideas! these must be.
Plus remember the time he admitted he's only here to piss off other commenters. Whoops! Sometimes people mess up and say what they really mean, the Kinsley Gaffe.
Plus the fact that the discussion started about what he actually wrote and came back to what he actually wrote. The only person making it all about him personally was him.
"You've got no desire to discuss topics or ideas. Just people."
Does anyone else here worry that sarcasmic's lack of self-awareness is so dense that it may collapse in on itself and create a world-destroying black hole?
Perhaps we should have physicists examine his posts.
Does anyone else here worry that sarcasmic's lack of self-awareness is so dense that it may collapse in on itself and create a world-destroying black hole?
Convergent thinking. With slightly different wording, I have made the same query about the sheer weight of his denial posing an existential threat in the past.
You made it clear that every argument you make is against me as a person, not against what I say.
That is exactly the opposite conclusion of the conversation we actually had. Everyone can read it for themselves. Of course, if you could learn anything from constructive criticism, we wouldn't have been having the conversation in the first place.
Never change, buddy. We wouldn't know how to be nice to you if you did.
You can tell when someone is butt blasted when they reply 4 times in a row like that.
My favorite part was posting and the refresh showing that he posted 3 increasingly anxious accusations while I was composing a reasoned response. You can't script that kind of comedy gold.

Yesterday's write-along satire translation of Biden's speech:
https://simulationcommander.substack.com/p/man-without-soul-preaches-about-soul
Biden (and leftists generally) like to pretend this is about Trump. But remember a decade ago Biden claimed Mitt Romney Republicans want to put American blacks "back in chains". The simple truth is that he's always been a demagogue and the left cannot produce a leader who isn't because that hatred is the only unifying force among the left. Without scapegoating others as racist / fascist the only thing they offer is a destroyed economy.
“Boring and forgettable is much better from a president than actively looney tunes and attempting to undermine democratic elections.”
Nice attempt at begging the question. Except “boring and forgettable” do not foreclose on the demonizing aspects of his dark speech, nor the dangers-and revolutions-they invite.
The spectre of shunning the citizenry -and a shunning this was-is that it doesn’t require fireworks. It doesn’t require fire and brimstone. It just requires a social imprimatur and the warped psychosis of groupthink.
Biden is certainly boring, but his stigmatizing words last night were the “looney tunes” that “undermine democratic elections.”
Those who complain that our President stole the election are extremists, fascists, dangerous, sore losers and have bad breath.
Only one thing: I'm talking about all the DEMOCRATS claiming that TRUMP stole the 2016 election.
Below is a wonderful compilation of Democrats complaining that Trump's 2016 election was a fraud.
As far as I know, not ONE of these complainers has ever been "cancelled" for their comments by the MSM, or by social media.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6qJCCg45Ow
Only one thing: I'm talking about all the DEMOCRATS claiming that TRUMP stole the 2016 election.
Remember elected Democrats officially protested the electoral vote count for Bush in 2004. It's important to note these antics predate Trump, it's just who Democrats are. They believe undermining elections is only wrong when Democrats win, and any election they don't win is illegitimate.
Let's not forget the Democratic bellyaching after the 2000 election as well. BDS went into full swing until the morning of 9/11/2001.
Bush lost the popular vote then the Supreme Court arbitrarily halted the count in Florida to ensure a Bush win 5-4. You'd be mad too.
In fact the Supreme Court prevented Florida from allowing different standards to determine valid votes between counties. Leftists believed counties with historically disproportionately Dem voters should have looser standards.
That's how Dems work: one standard for me, another standard for thee.
Nope, just I think the guy who gets the most votes should win instead of the guy who gets fewer votes.
Nope
Again Tony reveals he cannot understand what is happening because it differs from his fantasies. It's a sad state of affairs.
Nope, just I think the guy who gets the most votes should win instead of the guy who gets fewer votes.
What you “think” and reality clash.
Not even comparable. All Trump and many of
his followers do is continue to make unsupported and vague claims of a stolen election.
Truly it isn't comparable since Dems have a decades long history of unsupported and vague claims of stolen elections.
Yet Hillary conceded, and Trump hasn't.
Oooh.
Big whoop.
Shh, that doesn’t fit the”they did it, too!” justification narrative.
REGARDING BIDEN'S HATE SPEECH: As a Germanic Jew who lost most of my mom's family in the NAZI death camps, all I can say is
Mein Führer!
Less than 24 hours, he is already backtracking on the speech - https://nypost.com/2022/09/02/biden-walks-back-attacks-on-trump-voters-in-anti-maga-speech/
"“Come on, look, guys, you keep trying to make that case. I don’t consider any Trump supporter to be a threat to the country,” Biden said."
Must have polled like rotting fish.
There are no "mainstream" Republicans any more. 97% of Congressional Republicans supported Trump's Sedition, as did 86% of Republican voters. They supported Trumps January 6th effort to use violence to overthrow this government. That is literally terrorism. The USA has been at war on terrorism since shortly after 9/11/01, so terrorists are acting against the USA in a time of war. That is the Constitutional definition of Treason. Treason carries the death penalty. The court system would have trouble with 84+ million Treason trials, and some Republicans are in high office and might resist their trials. Therefore we will need to declare Martial Law, as Presidents are authorized to do (by very bad law on the part of Congress, but that is another issue). Once Martial Law has been declared we can simply kill all Republicans. The President could make it easy for citizens to join in this effort by issuing a pardon to anyone who commits any crime against any Republican in any circumstances. Naturally anyone who tries to stop this would also be "giving aid and comfort to the enemy in a time of war" and are, therefore, also all traitors too.
LOL, Biden's already walking his rhetoric back today. It didn't even go 24 hours before he had to clarify that he doesn't consider Trump voters to be terrorists. Meanwhile, you guys are so mentally ill and drug-addled, you can't even figure out what gender you are.
Alaskan15 sounds like another libertariantranslator. Kept thinking he'd bring up the Comstock Act.
Drama much?
Lol every time a Democrat does something amazing you freaks call it boring. Nothing to really argue with or criticize, so you try to make sure your sheeple don't even watch.
Trump's already saying he's going to pardon January 6th terrorists and cancel elections. This was all written in a room with Orban and Bolsonaro at the table. What do you idiots think you'll get out of that besides knowledge that you participated in turning the US into just another shithole?
Lol. “Amazing”? You are easily impressed tony.
And frightened.
Let me get this straight. Biden is now Hitler because of the severity of his stage lighting.
Even though his speech was about preserving democracy against fascists, and he even threw in a supportive word for the rights of the protester who was interrupting him the whole time.
In other words, you people have latched onto a criticism that is 100% about style and 0% about substance. No wonder Trump took you for the fish-brained morons you are.
Even though his speech was about preserving democracy against fascists,
When fascism comes to America, it will be in the guise of anti-fascism - Some Guy.
you people have latched onto a criticism that is 100% about style and 0% about substance.
Revealingly Biden's assertion is zero percent about substance, and thus so is this comment in his support. Left wingers just aren't capable of making intelligent comments. If they were intelligent, they wouldn't be leftists.
You're so fucking stupid it makes me want to claw my eyes out.
Maybe if you didn’t obsess over what other people think as much as you do, you wouldn’t be so miserable.
Might help with your eyesight too.
Biden's speech was hate. Hate because he is a failure. Biden vilified half of America. Biden divided America even more. Biden threatened patriotic, peaceful citizens.
And all all Reason can say is it was political. Pathetic.
And Republicans are always so nice to Democrats.
Threatened?

TDS
I think the coup de grace was when Trump claimed that Goldberg couldn't even buy pants, or something like that. That was the moment he went full TDS.
What are you talking about, "my" democracy? I just want people to be able to vote, and to have elected representatives acting to further the common good. I don't care about how the vote comes out. If conservatives win, fair and square, then that's just how it is. I support our democratic institutions, and I think Biden does, too. I'm not in favor of manipulating the process so that "my side" always wins. Republicans are.
I just want people to be able to vote, and to have elected representatives acting to further the common good.
No, you want people to vote the way you think they should, and if they don't, you pitch a fit and threaten to move to Canada. Get the fuck out of here with that "I just want people to vote" motte and bailey bullshit.
I don't care about how the vote comes out. If conservatives win, fair and square, then that's just how it is...I'm not in favor of manipulating the process so that "my side" always wins. Republicans are.
Yeah, this is a flat-out lie, too. You have no credibility whatsoever when you make this claim.
Well, everyone, except you apparently.
Emperor Palpatine also looks old and decrepit.
Biden let's the hate flow through himself, that gives him the power of the dark side.
I always thought the choice of John Hurt, two decades after starring in Nineteen-Eighty-Four in 'V for Vendetta' explicitly contained this aspect of a feeble tyrant clinging to/merely projecting power. Maybe selective memory, but IIRC, High Chancellor Sutler's health gets noticeably worse as the movie progresses.
What I mean is that, while I might want a particular outcome, I can accept that not everyone agrees with me, and I might sometimes find my preferred candidates rejected by a majority of Americans.
The only way to know what the people prefer is to ensure that our elections are free and fair. If they come out my way, great. If they come out another way, that's too bad for me, but it's on me and my pet causes to try to convince people they should vote differently. And if I can't manage that, then I don't deserve to "win."
That's democracy, and that's what I think Biden is trying to protect, and that's what I think Republicans are attacking. They don't want to "win" by convincing me to vote for them. They want to "win" by making my vote irrelevant.
If you're going to believe whatever you want, regardless of what I actually say, how am I supposed to earn any credibility?
You're giving the trolls wood.
nearly no one votes for the individual over the party after the primary level.
Independents might. But I think the majority of independents are smug democrats that want the assumed authority of being “non-partisan”.
And there you have it. You do realize that independents form roughly 40% (ie a plurality) of voters in the USA. They are the major influencers of elections.
The plain fact is that in the initial at-large primary about 73% of voters showed a preference for someone other than Sarah Palin. Now let me make it plain I have no objection to Sarah Palin other than the fact that she believes in witches as evidenced by the fact that she enthusiastically accepted a "blessing" from an African "witch-hunting" pastor at her church. That might not be that big a deal except for the fact that this was after this "pastor" incited a mob to hunt down and cause the death of a women that he had accused of witchcraft.
Now, if after that had the people of Alaska voted for her, I would have said, "fine". But as it is for reasons possibly other than my objections to her the people of Alaska expressed a preference that she should not be their Congressperson. Sorry but that is how democracy works.
In fact self-described "independents" have long skewed conservative. The fact that Republicans are losing their hold over them this election cycle should be a warning sign for them.
I have no doubt that our rank and file soldiers will do what they are commanded to do- even if that means bombing a block filled with "enemies of the republic". But at some point, someone in the chain of command is going to look at American soldiers shooting american citizens and ask if they are the baddies.
Being armed may not protect you from an M1 Abrams. But it protects you from a single GI marching you off to a camp. And if a leader has to actually order in M1s and Jet planes against american citizens, that is a huge escalation that (I hope) would lead some people in the chain of command to object.

I only show up to watch the clowns duke it out while tossing in this or that provocation. Bread and circuses. This is my circus.
If you're going to believe whatever you want, regardless of what I actually say, how am I supposed to earn any credibility?
You're a leftist, you have no credibility to begin with.
If you truly believe any of that you are dumber than a box of rocks and so easily manipulated that you are dangerous to allow out in public.
Let's just run down some of that protecting of free elections you are so proud of.
1. Proof of who you are to vote. We have requirements... be a citizen, be over 18... so one proposal is to require that you show who you are when you vote. This establishes that you are indeed an 18 or over US citizen. Bonus, it ensures that only you cast your vote.
So, is that actually a good way to protect the integrity of the election?
2. Secret ballot. One important part of democracy is the secret ballot. There have been times when companies would force employees to vote for their slate, sending proctor to watch their votes. They would even have polls in the workplace so they could coerce the vote.
To protect against this they want to institute a secret ballot that your employer cannot force you to show, that you cannot be bribed to fill out (also something thar used to happen).
What do you think? Protecting free elections? Or attacking democracy.
I don't object to a fair and uniform method of confirming a voter's identity when they show up to vote, or ensuring that anyone who votes absentee is actually the one doing so.
What I object to is specifically crafting that requirement in a way that unnecessarily excludes some legal voters from being able to exercise their rights, or manipulating the requirements from election to election in a way that confuses voters.
In their proposed legislation to address electoral subversion, Democrats compromised to include some form of national voter ID. Republicans did not seem interested in exploring the possibility of imposing a uniform set of rules, negotiated with Democrats, that balanced their concerns about the "integrity" of the vote with the Democrats' concerns over ensuring that every legal voter have reasonable access to the polls.
3. Sending ballots to every resident.
Regardless of registration or eligibility, everyone should be able to vote with little inconvenience. So send everyone a ballot that they can fill out at their leisure. No notary required.
To make It even easier, allow community groups to go to citizens and collect ballots to bring on their behalf. They can assist in filling ballots out if needed.
Allow several weeks for this process to play out.
Is this a good way to protect the integrity of the election?
I am not sure how the "secret ballot" makes this list, because as far as I'm aware no one is trying to make ballots for political candidates less than secret.
If you're talking about union elections, then you're clearly presenting the issue in a misleading and self-serving way. Union votes should be conducted via "secret ballot," as well, but that's a point often made by conservatives to try to justify anti-union shenanigans in union elections.
4. Count all ballots electronically and record the results immediately, but do bit publish any results until all ballots have been collected and counted.
Why? There has been a history of shenanigans using the knowledge of the ballot counts. If an election is close, perhaps a couple of extra boxes might be found down at the country club that ensure victory for the preferred candidate. Making sure all ballots are submitted and counted at the same time makes stuffing ballot boxes difficult.
How does this attempt to secure the ballot sound?
I believe that voting should be easy. Not easy to corrupt, which is why there are and should be various means to ensure that absentee balloting is secure, which - as far as we've seen in jurisdictions that employ it on a widespread basis - seem to work. That said, if there is some evidence that it's not being done properly in some particular case, I would be on board with refining how it's done.
This didn't use to be a partisan issue. Conservatives led the way on enabling rural voters to vote absentee, by mail, and most states have whole structures designed to help people living in nursing homes vote (even with assistance). They flipped on this issue only when they began to believe that they stood more to lose than to gain by easing access to the ballot through absentee or mail-in voting.
5. Clean the voters rolls.
Cleaning up the list of registered voters, removing dead people, people who have moved away, etc. And adding people who were removed for reasons like prior felony convictions, to ensure that the precinct head has an accurate list of all eligible voters. This way nobody gets turned away who should be allowed to vote.
Is that a good protection?
6. Allow enough time
Instead of voting on one day, or one week, or even one month, spread the electionnover as much time as possible. This allows voter activists ample time to visit every voter to ensure that their vote is collected. It also allows advocates to know what voter turnout in various areas is and to target their actions appropriately.
Good protection?
So... how ya doing?
Do you have any real opinions on those proposals? They are actually in play. Some are Biden proposals. Some are Repubican. Some are the inverse.. things under attack if Biden gets his way, or if the opposition gets their way.
If you divorce these proposals from their source, it is unambiguous.. Some of these things severely undermine the integrity of the election.
Any leader would be right to fight them.
The question is.... which are the good ones and which are damaging, and who supports which.
I don't have any problem with a process that ensures that all legally valid votes are counted, and protects manipulation of the counting process.
But, again, this obscures and mischaracterizes some of the "reforms" that Republicans have actually pushed for, which have less to do with "shenanigans" than they do arbitrarily shutting the door on legally valid votes that they don't expect to help their candidates to win. Count the votes as they come in, and keep the count secret until all votes are tabulated? Sure. Require that mailed-in ballots be received and counted before the close of the polls on election day, so that results can be announced that evening? That invites and facilitates manipulation.
"Cleaning the voter rolls" is a normal and ordinary part of election administration. The issue with these "purges" is that, too often, they are conducted in a sloppy fashion, tossing thousands of legally registered voters, and people who are tossed often don't realize they've been tossed until they show up at the polls. If they are then entitled to vote at all, they usually must do so using provisional ballots, which in turn require them to follow-up by jumping through additional hoops, in order to have their vote counted.
Voter rolls need to be cleaned. Democrats can't argue to the contrary. But the process needs to be careful and rigorous. People shouldn't be purged because their name matches a felon's, they are merely suspected of being ineligible, they didn't respond to a mailer despite voting in recent elections, etc. People who are purged should have notice to that effect, and should be able to easily get back on the rolls once they've been notified.
"Allow enough time" - again, I think it should be easy, but secure, to vote. I don't see any issue with an election period being open long enough so that people who can't vote on Election Day proper have ample opportunity to go in and vote.
I also don't see any particular problem with advocates taking steps, during an open election period, to try to GOTV. Is there some problem with too many people voting? As long as the ballot and the tally is secret, none of these advocates can know with any certainty that the people they're helping get to the polls will vote for their preferred candidates.
If the concern that such a process favors one side over the other, then that to me raises two questions: why is that, and how can you be so sure? If, for instance, working-class voters are more likely to vote for Democrats, and are less likely to be able to show up for Election Day, due to their work and family responsibilities, then why in the world does that count against advocates trying to help them get to the polls over an open election period? Or if, on the other hand, elderly voters are more likely to need a ride to the polls and have trouble getting one on Election Day, and they're more likely to vote for Republicans, why should we try to make it harder for them to get that kind of assistance?
More to the point - I reject that we can so easily assume that advocates know how populations will vote, such that open election periods present much genuine concern about manipulation. As Democrats have learned in 2016 and 2018, Hispanic voters are not at all a "given" for them, and neither, increasingly, are Black voters. Asian voters, too, tend to split in favor of more conservative candidates in certain elections. Here in NYC, absentee and early voting catered to the city's white, educated, "progressive" voters. But we elected the most conservative Democrat on our ballot as mayor, who won largely with the support of a diverse, multi-borough coalition, which apparently was not on board with the "progressive" agenda.
I think all citizens should be able to vote. Voting should be easy to do, because that's the best way to ensure accountability among our elected representatives. I also agree that it makes sense to use common-sense and reasonable measures to ensure that only legal voters actually cast ballots. I think there's plenty of room to compromise on the process, which I think should be uniform across the country and not manipulated on a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction basis to favor one party or the other. We should all know the rules, the rules should be stable, and there should be a rule-governed process for identifying and correcting problems wherever they occur.
It's because Republicans don't agree with this, which is why I disagree with Republicans.
Unless it is.
What really concerns Biden is that, in the event of civil war, all the fighter jets in the world won't let them go out in public without taking a bullet if they make enough people hate them. Gun control is meant to make political assassination a lot harder, so that politicians can freely piss people off.
That's why it really only took off after the Kennedy assassination, when they started to get scared.
After all, you really think that, in the event of civil unrest, insurgents are going to form up into neat columns to be bombed? No, they'll be too busy taking out infrastructure and capping enemy leaders.
Gun control is preemptive self defense by politicians who know they're going to royally piss off enormous numbers of people.
