The new rules are apparently a reaction to online criticism of the government's continued efforts to battle COVID-19 with lockdowns.

Seems to imply the CCP isn’t doing a very good job of monitoring their internet. I doubt more than a fraction of 1% of users use VPNs to hide their identify, but even if 10% do, it still seems to imply the non-VPN users are being naughty and the CCP can’t do anything about it.

It’s an easy assumption the NSA or some other TLA monitors the internet well enough to know who sends most of the spam, who controls which botnets and what the control mechanisms are. Both sides want some level of this treatment. Fighting fake news requires we know exactly who is posting what. I’ve seen calls for this. Some websites actually do it. Reason requires an actual account with an actual email. And Reason is fairly anarchy about stuff. Other websites want user validation. Facebook removes any user they deem not a real person. Which is hilarious because I know accounts that are fake that are still going strong.

The problem is the call for government to demand this of all websites. It’s one thing if Facebook makes a policy for Facebook, but quite another for Biden/Trump/Xi to send thugs over to Zuckerberg’s house to demand it. And plenty of people on bothsides who would cream their pants in joy of it actually happened here.

When China does it then it’s bad, when Trump/Biden does it then it’s good. We gotta battle the forces of phake news mocking Glorious Leader! Hurr durr!

Woke websites solve that problem by eliminating the comments section. For example, SFgate doesn’t allow comments. I expect to see much more of this in the US in the near future as a way to eliminate “misinformation.”

A lot of websites don’t. When they don’t have the capability to monitor the comments section, sometimes it’s just easier not to have a comments section. This stuff doesn’t come for free.

It’s not just woke websites. Any website that doesn’t want a toxic website either moderates the comment section or eliminates it. Reason comment section is pretty bad, but I’ve seen much much worse. It’s not about left versus right, there’s just a lot of people who like to fling the most noxious poo about.

And unfortunately moderation algorithms just aren’t there yet. So it takes human eyeballs. Think of those poor schmucks who have to scan the worst porn to find the illegal stuff. Imagine being subjected to every variant of 2G1C eight hours a day. Now comment sections are a written analogy to that.
