Senators Want To Control Google Search Results About Abortion
Plus: Uvalde cops didn't check classroom door, Texas GOP slides further to the right, telemedicine deregulation in peril, and more...

Democrats ask Google to "limit the appearance" of anti-abortion clinic results. It would be good if people searching Google for information on abortion were presented with the most relevant and scientifically rigorous information, just as it would be good if Google results didn't tell someone with a leg cramp that he might be dying of some rare disease. But for this to happen, tech company employees would have to be both perfect arbiters of the truth and also able to personally vet heaps and heaps of websites. Since that is impossible, we settle for a system where Google serves up an array of web links and lets individuals take from this content what they will.
This upsets some politicians, who think Google should be serving up only government-approved information. In the latest iteration of this phenomenon, 21 senators have sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai complaining that people who search for information about abortions may be led to websites for crisis pregnancy centers.
Crisis pregnancy centers exist to persuade people not to choose abortion. They may be run by religious organizations or by secular pro-life groups. They often draw people in by purporting to be neutral sources of information and support for people facing unexpected pregnancies, but their goal is to convince people to continue those pregnancies. Sometimes this is done through positive means, such as emotional support and material aid, and sometimes it is done through negative means, such as guilt trips and misleading information.
From a pro-choice perspective, there is much to criticize about crisis pregnancy centers. But while some have been found to misrepresent themselves in ways that amount to fraud, most operate within legal limits and have every right to exist, to advertise, and to try to persuade people. Looked at another way, they could even be lauded as representing a non-authoritarian way to promote pro-life views—standing in contrast to the much more drastic tactics of trying to shut down abortion clinics, bar access to abortion pills, and criminalize abortion doctors.
In any event, in a free society they must be able to advertise anywhere pro-choice advertising is permitted.
If Google decided to ban crisis pregnancy center advertisements, that would be one thing. I don't think that would be a good idea, since I think we benefit when tech companies trying to remain relatively apolitical. But as a private company, Google is perfectly free to make that choice.
But whichever choice it makes, it should make it free of political pressure.
In their letter to Google, the senators—including Dianne Feinstein (D–Calif.), Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.), and Amy Klobuchar (D–Minn.)—give the impression that all crisis pregnancy centers falsely represent themselves as abortion clinics. "We write today regarding disturbing new reports that Google has been directing users who search for abortion services towards anti-abortion 'fake clinics,' also known as 'crisis pregnancy centers' or 'pregnancy resource centers,'" they state.
They call on Google to "limit the appearance of anti-abortion fake clinics or so-called 'crisis pregnancy centers' in Google search results, Google Ads, and on Google maps when users search for 'abortion clinic,' 'abortion pill,' or similar terms." They ask that Google attach disclaimers to crisis pregnancy center websites that appear in search results.
But it's inaccurate to suggest all crisis pregnancy centers are masquerading as abortion clinics. And those that are doing this in a way that runs afoul of the law should be dealt with by the legal system, not by federal lawmakers exerting censorial pressure on a private company.
The latter approach doesn't just undermine free speech and free markets; it's remarkably short-sighted as a political strategy. If senators pressure private companies into excluding speech that Democratic politicians don't like while Democrats are in power, what do they think will happen when Republicans are in charge again?
The best way to counter bad information is to get people good information, not to strong-arm private actors into spreading only your preferred messages. A government powerful enough to bully tech companies into obscuring information about anti-abortion centers is also one powerful enough to bully tech companies into hiding info about how to obtain an abortion—and about a whole lot else.

Uvalde cops didn't check if door was locked. News of the stunning incompetence of the Uvalde, Texas, police keeps coming. "As police waited for more than an hour in a hallway outside the classrooms where a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers, none of the officers checked to see if the doors to the classrooms were locked," reports ABC:
The new development in the investigation of the shooting came just days after Chief Pete Arredondo of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police, the incident commander during the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, defended his actions and claimed the delay in breaching connecting classrooms 111 and 112, where the gunman was holed up was because he was waiting for a janitor to get the key to the door.
But surveillance footage showed that neither Arredondo nor any other officers taking cover in the hallway outside the classrooms ever attempted to open the door before receiving the keys to the two connecting classrooms. That means there were 77 minutes between when the alleged 18-year-old gunman entered the school through an unlocked door and when police fatally shot him, a source with knowledge of the investigation told ABC News.

The statements about homosexuality—as well as additional stances on abortion that called for students to "learn about the Humanity of the Preborn Child"—were among more than 270 planks that were approved by a platform committee and voted on by the larger group of convention delegates using paper ballots. The results of those votes were still pending on Sunday, but Mr. Wesolek said it was rare for a plank to be voted down by the full convention after being approved by the committee.

At Johns Hopkins Medicine, some patients and their families now have to switch doctors or drive hours to different states when previously video calls from their homes would have been allowed under the looser regulations, said Dr. Brian Hasselfeld, the health system's medical director for digital health and telemedicine.
The major barrier is licensing: a requirement rooted in the 19th century that a doctor must have a license from the state where a patient is located, even if the doctor is licensed elsewhere.
"Most states now are back to the pre-pandemic licensure rules, where you must be licensed in our state if you're going to see patients in our state," Hasselfeld said.

I think it is worth attempting to do so, understanding the opposing viewpoint aids in discussing it as well. Good opposition begins with steelmanning an argument.
Here is my attempt to do so. Do not take this as representing my views.
Expert understanding is necessary for people to make the right decisions. With these experts, acting dispassionately, people are able to gather the information needed to act correctly in regards to what is best for them. Women's Health organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, are known experts on women's health. They are able to provide women with the information they need to make the decisions that are best for them.
Crisis Pregnancy centers, on the other hand, inherently come from the view that abortion is wrong. They are not neutral actors. Thus, their interactions with women are inherently dangerous. Because possible options for aiding women in their time of need are taken off the table, they fundamentally are immoral as they they prevent women from acting in full knowledge to determine their best interests. This lack of neutrality makes them dangerous to women who are not aware Crisis Pregnancy Centers are not acting specifically for their health, but for an underlying agenda of anti-choice.
To prevent this misinformation from being given to women, and to make sure women make the best choices in regards to their needs, it is important to get rid of Crisis Pregnancy Centers entirely as they are inherently immoral due to their lack of neutral expertise.

On the one hand, thank fucking god someone finally came out and said this. This has been obvious for years, and it is only that this was reaching a tipping point ending female sports that a governing body finally woke up to it.
On the other hand, even setting the age of 12 is problematic. First of all, even in the womb, boys are getting significant advantages in bone and muscle density from their hormones. The degree of difference is just smaller. And it is noteworthy that there isn't a large body of work studying the development of biological males who transition prior to puberty.

It's basic math if the left is at a baseline of - 5 (on a scale of - 10 to 10) and the right is a baseline of 5 the middle is 0. Now if the left shifts to - 9 the new middle - 2 thus the right is farther away from "the center"
There clearly are planks they put in that would give me pause about voting Republican if I lived in Texas. It's not just a case of the left moving further away from where they were, they added things that are not going to appeal to moderates in the Republican party. I wouldn't make it part of the platform that Biden "was not legitimately elected," even if I see a lot of election irregularities.
I don't like that they added language about homosexuality to their platform because it's not the job of the government to have an opinion about what types of relationships people have. I don't know why they describe it as "an abnormal lifestyle choice," which gives me a lot of pause. I also don't know if I agree with their proposed changes to the curriculum regarding human reproduction, I think it goes to the point of being propaganda. I certainly dislike their plank that "jobs are a fundamental right" because it sounds almost like Marxism, a very odd thing to come from a Republican plank.
So it's not bog-standard conservatism there.

Beyond that, even if the platform is just trying to state, "This is a trait that belongs to a small minority of the population," why the fuck does that belong in your political platform? I thought the whole point of crisis pregnancy centers was to offer material aid for people who are on the fence about pregnancy. They can put the mother in touch with adoption agencies, and they function as a charity that helps with medical expenses, or material things for the baby if they choose to go through with it.
The idea of the crisis pregnancy center that tries to shame a woman for thinking of abortion, or even pretends to be an abortion clinic, seems like the TV movie version of what these things are. If you can point me to an actual case of one of these things fraudulently pretending to be an abortion clinic but actually not doing that, feel free. I've run a quick search but all I find are allegations that EVERY crisis pregnancy center is a fake abortion clinic, which is clearly bullshit.
I donate regularly to one of these. We buy diapers and formula and other items. Not what is shown on TV or by the media.
Does the center help with medical costs associated with pregnancy, like prenatal visits? I've always assumed this is part of it, if they're running a charity, though I'm not 100% informed.
Most of them provide or give referrals for those things.
They do. Many of them help with adoption as well, if that's the direction the mother chooses. There is a lot of them though, so I can't vouch for what everyone does and if some are acting in particular bad faith or whatever. But, that caveat is just how life works in any large system.
That goes against the narrative that pro-lifers only care about fetuses.

Most of these organizations also do what the left claims pro-life people NEVER do: provide support and connect women with resources to help them with their pregnancy. Therefore they must be stopped. We can't have women thinking there are other options.
If Google decided to ban crisis pregnancy center advertisements, that would be one thing. I don't think that would be a good idea, since I think we benefit when tech companies trying to remain relatively apolitical. But as a private company, Google is perfectly free to make that choice.

Whether or not one agrees with the content of the letter, the fact that this letter was sent on official Congressional letterhead is a bit disturbing. It is an attempt by a minority of members of congress to give a private entity the impression that this is an official request from congress, rather than individuals expressing their personal opinions. This should not be allowed. They are using their position in Congress to intimidate private entities to bow to their wishes. (Imagine a police officer writing a personal note to request that his neighbor mow their lawn more often on a citation pad!) If these people want to ask Google to do this, they might be able to do that in an unofficial capacity. But to make it look like it is an official request from Congress is a deceptive abuse of their position. As I previously discussed, the new idea of America was that nobody was above the law, and that government officials who passed laws were held to account by voters. Over and over during his short administration, Joe Biden has ignored the proper rule-making process of our Republic while proclaiming to be saving it.
With executive orders, he shut down the Keystone pipeline and suspended other energy projects. He sanctioned Russia (long before the war) and shut down travel that Trump had opened. Vaccine mandates were executive orders. Now, certainly Biden isn’t the first president to use the executive order, but he may be the most hypocritical by sidestepping the proper lawmaking procedures of the country for the biggest issues of the day.

Let’s settle the abortion issue once and for all. I make three assumptions, and from those assumptions comes my position.
1) Human rights are universal and objective.
2) The rights of all persons are equally valuable (in themselves).
3) The social contract- the government can cause people to sacrifice some rights in order to protect other, greater rights.
The first two of these assumptions are stated in the Declaration of Independence and the third is implicit. Therefore, US policy is also obligated to make these assumptions, since the Declaration lays out our founding philosophy.
If a fetus is a person, then a fetus has a right to life. The right to life (of anyone) is more important than the right to abortion (of anyone), just as the right to safety (of anyone) is more important than the right of someone else to drive drunk.
Therefore, via the social contract, the government should restrict a woman's right to abortion so the greater right to life of the child is protected. The same logic would be behind laws banning infanticide, just fewer rights of the woman are in play (having an infant is less intrusive than being pregnant).
If a fetus is not a person, then abortion should be unrestricted. A woman's right to an abortion is the only consideration.
Obviously, at some point a fetus becomes a person. But that specific point is unknowable, whether conception, heartbeat, viability, or birth. Too many participants in the debate simply pick one of those and hold it on faith. If abortion is illegal, we risk unnecessarily violating women's right to have an abortion. But if abortion is legal, we risk killing persons. The former is a safer bet. Yes, it involves infringing on a woman's rights, but the alternative risk of killing so many is worse.
The US government's founding assumes the first three premises I make. Therefore its policy deliberation should accept them. Unless there's an error in my logic, then my position is correct. Please phrase replies in language of human rights, not personal morality or emotion. The issue is unresolvable because of too much emotion.

Even the example used is imperfect. The criminalization of actions that place others at risk is not a violation of a right. My issues with drunk driving laws are how they are arbitrarily enforced without the establishment of actual impairment and when they involve punitive action taken without due process. I don't completely agree that fetuses currently have no legal protections, because they seem to often be treated by the law as a sort-of person, with minor rights.
There would have to be a logical justification to extend citizenship (of a sort) to unborn humans. Ought a fetus be legally considered a citizen? The deeper question is "why should any person be considered a citizen?" That's hard to determine, but the best answer probably involves present, past, or future potential to contribute to the group (in other words, participate in the social contract). So based on this, I'd suggest that a fetus ought to be given legal protection. Note: I include future not because of anti-abortion bias, but because doing otherwise would strip infants of legal protections.
This may not be perfect, but it's the best I can come up with. I'd welcome your response.
