YouTube Deleted a January 6th Committee Video for Spreading Election Misinformation
"We enforce our policies equally for everyone," said a spokesperson.

YouTube removed a video uploaded by the January 6th Committee that showed footage of former President Donald Trump contesting the results of the 2020 election.
Trump's false claim that voting machines erroneously "moved thousands of votes from my account to [Joe] Biden's account" was aired during the committee hearings, which are ongoing this week. Former Attorney General William Barr testified before the committee that he discovered no evidence to support Trump's assertions. Video footage of the hearings is available on YouTube.
The platform, however, has very strict rules against spreading election misinformation, which prohibit users from posting videos that observe that a false claim has been made, even if the user does not endorse the claim.
"Our election integrity policy prohibits content advancing false claims that widespread fraud, errors or glitches changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, if it does not provide sufficient context," Ivy Choi, a spokesperson for YouTube, told The New York Times. "We enforce our policies equally for everyone, and have removed the video uploaded by the Jan. 6 committee channel."
In essence, YouTube does not distinguish between Trump saying the election was stolen and a third party saying that Trump says the election was stolen. Suffice it to say this is not a very intelligent policy.
It is, however, the exact policy that ensnared Rising, the YouTube show I host for The Hill. In March, YouTube suspended The Hill's channel for violating the election misinformation policy. Our crime? We played a clip of Trump making false statements about the 2020 election. Neither I nor my co-host expressed any agreement with these statements; we simply reported what was said. It was an act of basic journalism, but YouTube said it was akin to promoting a prohibited viewpoint.
What happened to the January 6th Committee video is a powerful example of why this standard is so absurd. When policy makers, content moderators, and members of the media take a broad view of what counts as misinformation and disinformation, they are likely to incidentally forbid valid perspectives—including perspectives that are working to correct misinformation, as was the case here.
YouTube is a private company and can set whatever policies it deems best. But it seems fairly clear that the election misinformation policy is not working as intended; in fact, it is actively undermining good journalism.

Seems it should have been expected since it's no doubt controlled by AI. When you program a terminator bot to seek out and destroy a thing wherever it is encountered it should come as no surprise that it does just that.
This is a gross mischaracterization of how AI works. There are legitimate criticisms to be made about using AI in various ways, but this is not one of them. The way you're thinking of "programming a bot to seek out and destroy a thing" is how conventional software development works. The whole idea with AI is that you program software to learn within a bounded context and continually apply smarter and smarter discretion in its decision making, which is clearly not what happened here.

Do mean that Congress is controlled by an AI, or just the Youtube censor software?
No, Congress is controlled by Artificial Stupidity, as TPTB have decided it is less dangerous than genuine stupidity.
Trump's false claim that voting machines erroneously "moved thousands of votes from my account to [Joe] Biden's account" was aired during the committee hearings, which are ongoing this week.
I can remember a time when this would have been stated as, "Mr. Trump alleges that voting machines erroneously "moved thousands of votes from my account to [Joe] Biden's account", etc."
But no, these days the media is partisan. They can tell you definitively something is a "false claim" or a "big Lie". No ambiguities here!
Reason #815176 why the only proper response to a modern journalist involves giving him a face full of fist with the force of a thousand freight trains.
“Former Attorney General William Barr testified before the committee that he discovered no evidence to support Trump's assertions.”
And how do we know that this isn’t a false claim?
Absence of evidence is evidence of absence
It’s not a false claim if he didn’t discover any. But the statement isn’t definitive, especially in the time frame given and the amount of effort put into that discovery.
My kid fairly frequently manages not to discover things that are clearly present. That doesn’t make it false when he says he couldn’t find it. It just means he’s a lazy butt who can’t manage to apply effort to the cause at hand.
He was under threat of perjury? Of course when you don't look you're likely not to find.
Because it's carefully crafted to be exactly true.
Barr testified that he discovered no evidence that Trump's claim was true.
"HE"
He very specifically DID NOT testify that there was no evidence that Trump's claim was true.
Barr claimed that he personally didn't discover any evidence, which may be technically true, but he also didn't put any effort into looking for evidence.
As a designer in the Engineering field, and I could easily make the factually correct claim that "I did not discover any design flaws in the construction plans" even if I never personally even looked at the construction plans. The statement is still technically true.
It used to be they gave you an Emmy for making those assertions (2005)
Um, 2020, Cuomo.
If Robby didn't call it a "false claim", Charles Koch would have ordered Sullum and Boehm take him out back and shave off his glorious hair.
"Hate" has no home here.
I dunno if Boehm could take him, but Sullum is probably armed and dangerous.
Still odd that this election, and this one alone, is not permitted to be questioned.
Why would you want to question the most secure election ever?
Yea, it’s amazing how Stacy Arbrams is allowed to continuously lie about “racist voter suppression” in an election where black voters voted disproportionately higher than non-black voters.
Abrams
It is pretty sad. My Journalism 101 professor back in the Stone Age pounded into our heads that "Nobody cares what you think." Every statement of fact or opinion in our news pieces had to be attributed to a source. He was also very strongly against anonymous sources. He thought they were rife with potential for abuse and should be used rarely or never.
He was a dying breed, even then.
And I just discovered that he died this year, back in February, at the age of 75. Bless him. I had him when he was in his '30s, though he seemed much older and more forbidding to me at the time.
Sad. My journalism high school teacher died recently. He was awesome, too.
I went on to major in computer science since I wanted to tell truth for a living instead of the opposite.
What a load of stupid shit. A fact's a fact, and Trump's claims are false.
You need to both sides flat earth, too?
2000 Mules, retard
Seriously, you wouldn’t know a fact if it your retarded far leftist ass.
I wonder if it would be deemed “false” if you said judges and executives extralegally changed election law, or that people were videotaped committing fraud, and taped desyroyong ballots, and taped ‘curing’ ballots, and that officials in some big cities manufactured crises to delay vote totals
Probably, since all that is just MAGAt moron conspiracisms with no evidence to support them.
Except it’s literally on video you fascist piece of shit
Maybe we don't actually need Youtube to counter misinformation.
That would be a BINGO.
Of course, since they will never bother to stop the metric tons of misinformation coming out of Demofascists on a daily basis.
Granted, on principle I don’t believe in censorship of anything. I’m not a leftist.
YouTube is a private company and can set whatever policies it deems best. But it seems fairly clear that the election misinformation policy is not working as intended; in fact, it is actively undermining good journalism.
There's so much to work with here, I'm not even sure where to start.
Point 1 : given recent documentation proving collusion between the doj dnc and you tube they are not a private company
And... and... the problem isn't that it only BECAME a problem when it undermined "good" journalism. Everything in the censorious regime that is Silicon Valley isn't a-ok until it takes out the good guys. If you believe that, then you're not a free speech advocate. You're just agitating for a constituency.
This is a better point 2 than mine.
The assertion, implicit though it may be, that the hill is good journalism is risible. Point 2.
I think the Hill DOES have good Journalisming. But my opinion on whether it's good or bad is irrelevant. Someone at Youtube thinks it's bad. And that's all that matters.
The Hill is not without fault, but compare it to the trash heap that is Politico.
O/T, but I thought of a discussion, I think you, cannot recall who else, had, sometime last year.
https://kirkegaard.substack.com/p/unnatural-hair-color-really-is-a?s=r
I want proof of good journalism before I weigh in.
Stick with “lulz”
What a joke. All right-thinking people know the election was rigged. If it wasn't rigged then Trump would have won. The fact that he lost is proof that it was rigged. Now prove it wasn't rigged. You can't. That means it was.
MAGA 2024!
Not a troll, folks.
Remember, sarcasmic never tries to start shit. It's always everybody elses fault.
I'm making fun of sore losers who will not be satisfied until they get their way. If you take personal offense then that's on your ego, not me.
Ideas!
Remember how last week you were ignorant about the sentencing for J6 protestors? Maybe sit this one out too while you research all of the rulings on illegal election changes, double voters, and high profile voting fraud cases still being processed.
If you have all kinds of proof that the election was indeed stolen, evidence that is so obvious that anyone who sees it will be convinced, then please share.
Until then I'm going with what I see, which is a bunch of sore losers sucking on sour grapes who will only be convinced that the election was fair if their guy is declared the winner.
Have you watched "2000 Mules"?
Sarcasmic would never watch something that would cause him to seriously analyze his tribal positions.
No. I'll look it up.
So sort of like the sore liberal losers that attacked anything they could about Trump's victory in 2016 (you remember, illegitimate president, voter fraud, Russian collusion, eliminate the terrible and unnecessary electoral college, harass the electors to change their votes) kind of like that Sarcasmic?
Yes. Kinda like that. Except more pathetic and whiny.
Nah, sorry, more pathetic is a multimillion dollar two year witch hunt over an idea of Russian collusion that was known false a priori because the investigators made up the claim whole cloth.
RESIST!
#NOTMYPRESIDENT
IMPEACH!
Without taking a position on Trump's claims, it is demonstrable that many states used COVID emergency declarations to change voting procedures in violation of their state laws. It is demonstrable that state courts nevertheless allowed these actions. It is demonstrable that biased outside parties pumped money into election boards, in such fashion as to create at least the appearance of undue influence, if not actual undue influence. It is demonstrable that bulk distribution of mail-in ballots created insecure ballot handling, where, for example, apartment dwellers reported receiving 4 or 5 ballots in the names of previous tenants. It is demonstrable that ballot harvesters and mail handlers could "disappear" opposition ballots. It is demonstrable that there were irregularities, procedure violations, and violations of court orders vis-a-vis "curing ballots", counting ballots, ballot security and chain of custody.
I *want* to believe that all these things were innocent and had no effect on the outcome. I can't say that any of them for sure did affect the outcome. I have very little faith that the system worked fairly and impartially.
I damn sure would prefer that our elections didn't have these things going on.
It's one thing to lose a close game. But no one wants to be on the field in a hard-fought contest when the referees have $50K down on the other team.
If you made a Venn diagram of "Trump won prove he didn't" and dads who pick fights at school sporting events, I bet there would be a lot of overlap.
You are an idiot
It's the same argument many on the left were setting up for had Trump won.
Illegally changed election laws. Kicking out poll workers. 2000 mules.
Meanwhile Stacy Gap Tooth Lying Abrams can claim her election was stolen over and over with all evidence proving that claim is bullshit.
And yet ENB quotes the Jan 6 committee as if its "work" is objective truth.
Disgusting. Get out of DC, you faux-libertarians! You can't even fake being faux-Libertarians, you have drunk so much Kool-Aid in the cocktail parties.
If Trump alleges that the machines erroneously reported the totals, then he has to prove it. It is not up to those who disagree to prove that the machines did not erroneously report the totals.
okay, then let the machines be examined by a 3rd party
easy peasy
oh wait, Dominion and Smartmatic don't want that
But if someone claims they legitimately won an election, no proof needed...
Go back and watch the coverage and you'll see Trump lose votes on live tv. How does that happen?
Everyone with a brain is fully aware that the Democrats have been running ballot stuffing operations in their safe Counties for decades.
What was really disturbing to people was the blatant ballot stuffing using their illegal mass mailed out ballot scheme.
The evidence? Democrat's HR1, which was written to make all of the ballot stuffing schemes permanently and nationally structured so people would never be able to stop the election fraud short of real rebellion. As it stands now the areas affected most by ballot stuffing schemes are being changed through grass roots efforts to make it far more difficult for Democrats to commit fraud.
Hopefully the coming SCOTUS decision on who makes the rules will come down completely on the State Legislature's side as the sole and unreviewable election law writers.
One of the worst problems in State elections is lawsuits designed to be turned into Consent Orders that unconstitutionally change election laws with little public knowledge. Like what Ratburger and Abrams did to get rid of any signature verification among other tweaks that made Georgia into election fraud central.
"Hopefully the coming SCOTUS decision "
Given the recent inaction on their part in the Pennsylvania undated ballots situation, I won't hold my breath.
The #Jan6Hearings can't even investigate disinformation without spreading disinformation. Sad.
Secret trials/star chambers being the obvious solution to that problem.
Now, if Youtube could just get after the people who claim the 2000 and 2016 elections were stolen . . .
https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2018/09/11/many-democrats-think-that-the-2016-election-result-was-rigged/
Prepping the ground work for claims of fraud should you lose is nothing new. Trump just carried it to an extreme.
2016 and 2000 are lesser examples by the Democrats. Lesser, but just barely. Also, my wife in 2012 helped monitor election sites against scary actors. None happened, of coursem. As soon as the polls closed, it was obvious the Democrat won our state, and they immediately declared the election fair!
Such a modern invention of power-covetous politicians!
https://youtu.be/9iMy0969BTw
How is 2016 "lesser"? Hillary Clinton literally crafted a false narrative, sold it to the FBI, and it was used for 4 years straight to attempt to unseat an elected president.
How is that any less a coup?
Because making false claims about your political opponent is qualitatively different then having a mob inside the US capital chanting "Hang Mike Pence!" on the day of the election certification.
If all there was was Trump's election fraud claims, then this would be a parallel situation. But there was also an attempt to alter the election results through intimidation and violence.
Eat a bullet, State Supremacist
Yea, it’s infinitely worse. Idiot
The entire BLM movement was an attempt to change the outcome of an election through violence. Difference is they actually killed 30+ people and did billions in damage instead of 10k
This is not hypocrisy, this is a careful and accurate assessment of the fact that Republicans have consistently tried to undermine democracy and steal elections.
They did it on prime time in 2000. I saw it happen. They tried to do it, again, on CNN in 2020. If they've done it in the years between, why would that be a surprise?
So now you're claiming that our elections are not safe and secure?
Not a single of the recounts, in Florida, changed who won the state.
If you saw it happen, it must have been in some hallucinations.
The LieCheatSteal party is the one known for cheating on election counts, not the Republicans.
Whenever late-found ballots get counted, it always means a LieCheatSteal candidate pulled ahead.
Democrats have stolen elections their entire history, fascist.
Our election was hijacked. There is no question. Congress has a duty to #ProtectOurDemocracy & #FollowTheFacts.
Nancy Pelosi
Point of order: YouTube (Google), like facebook, Instagram, twitter, other Internet media companies, are not free and indepent actors.
When government threatens section 230, which will open up lawsuits in a target rich environment, leading to collapse of stock prices as their business model contracts, their costs skyrocket, and their offering is massively curated, leading to less desire to watch by billions, they listen, and do the bidding of the censors in government holding this sword of Damoclese above them...waiting for it to drop...unless they censor in ways that please those in government threatening them.
Which was done. Right before an election. And continues to this day, to be wielded against a political opponent potential in 2024, the same way Fox News and Republicans kept Benghazi alive from 2012 to 2016, to hurt their own opposition.
Rich beatings all around are well-deserved.
And if anyone says either that's ok for Congress to do (a partisan congress, but nevermind) or over-exaggerated (hundreds of billions in value decrease among the trillion dollar club?) I have only one thing to say:
During the run up to the first Gulf War, Saddam Hussein gathered up over 2000 foreign nationals, and planted them about power plants and other infrastructure, as human shields.
He called them his "guests."
We were treated with a precious moment where he sits there while a terrified little blond boy stands there, Saddam pawing his head like petting a dog, and talking about his "guests".
That's you guys. Apologists for Congressional censors using the most vile and powerful censorship threat this side of bamboo up the fingernails. And for hundreds of billions of dollars, I'm sure many would choose the fingernails.
That's you, pawing the kid's head, pretending no censorship. These companies are just your guests.
"the same way Fox News and Republicans kept Benghazi alive from 2012 to 2016, to hurt their own opposition."
You forgot a word, LEGITIMATELY. I hope you aren't minimizing that CIA gun running operation and, regardless of what they were doing, the deaths of American agents including an actual Cabinet level Ambassador, as Clinton did.
It's obvious that the Democrat perverted DOJ would ignore the referrals but the point of making a stink about that absolutely evil OP and Clinton/Obama's response was not just publicity, but also a warning to the federal workforce that the Democrats will have you run guns in a nation they destroyed and allow even a Cabinet member to be murdered to cover it all up while using their power to ignore any and all inquiry.
Few things are more instructive than listening to what Republican Party looters say about Democratic Party looters and vice-versa. Remember those things on election day and vote your local LP.
Dave Smith 2024
People actually died at Benghazi.
Well, Uncle Sam owns them since goog is a D.A.R.P.A startup, so they bought it.
"YouTube is a private company and can set whatever policies it deems best."
Just don't have your private company choose to not bake a cake.
The Democrats questioned the 2016 election. And are still.
They questioned the 2004 and 2000 elections and protested and rioted and objected in Congress over all three.
Hell, in 2016 they tried to subvert electors.
But none of that qualified as an 'insurrection'.
3 House Democrats protested the 2016 election and were quickly shot down by Biden as VP and Senate chair. No Dem Senators supported them. By the way, Trump list the popular vote in that election by 23 million and had Russian help, especially on the damaging to Hillary DNC emails.
In 2020 147 GOP House members object with 6 Senators and the loser Trump tried to stop the proceedings with rioters and Pence.
Hillary conceded the night of the 2016 election, Obama opened the WH to him and his transition teams, and both went to the inauguration. Trump never conceded, blocked Biden's transition teams until well into December, and was too much of a coward to show up at the inauguration of Biden.
Conclusion: All Democrats but an inconsequential number of House members (3), and including all their leadership supported the peaceful transition of power on which democracies depend. Trump on the other hand is a lying losing dick and was supported in his efforts to steal the election by many in the GOP leadership.
If you don't get the difference AZA you're an idiot or also a lying sack of losing shit and should have your head examined.
these platform censors are mentally retarded people
The January 6th Committee is disinformation, more often called propaganda.
Yes, these sorts of policies tend to be stupid because the people working at Alphabet have no expertise to make intelligent, unbiased judgements on these sorts of things. No one really does, which is why such policies violate the principle of free speech and open debate as a societal norm.
It is a bit self serving that Soave can muster up indignation at a platform's foolish policies when some content is slagged that is similar to a piece he worked on that got booted.
It seems pretty obvious that Youtube's nonsensical policy is based almost entirely on being able to make sure they cannot be accused of ever including "false" speech at the least cost to them. To be able to do so in a reasonably rational way would require some sort of human monitoring; it is far cheaper to use software to identify easily modeled video and audio en masse and simply target it.
After Molly Ball's article in Time magazine documented how the dem operatives stole the election, after 2,000 Mules independently showed that the election was stolen, the big lie is that the election was honest.
Atlas Shrugged was supposed to be a warning, Not A Newspaper!
I am among those who lived in the USSR. The language and wording used in US media during the Trump administration was very similar to that used by state media over there.
It started with "Trump claimed without evidence that....", and evolved to "Trump falsely claimed....". My favorite was watching the news and hearing the phrase "Trump falsely claimed today that the Covid vaccine would be ready by the end of the year".
And it was.
But the wording implies that the reporter thoroughly investigated the claims, and found absolute proof that Trump's claims were impossible.
But Trump gets such treatment even with remarks he had just made, which could not have been investigated, and for claims that later turn out to be true.
The claims about election shenanigans are particularly absurd. Major democrats, including at least two members of the 1/6 committee, have made claims that previous elections where republicans won were illegitimate, stolen, and opposed the certification of electors.
Anyway, in the USSR, we learned to discern much of the truth by listening to how state media lied about events and issues. The "falsely claimed" language sounds to me like not only are they lying, but they are afraid of what might happen if the lie were found out. Everyone must stay on message, and anyone expressing doubts must be shamed or punished.
I've heard it said that one tool of the left is to have one institution make a statement, and coordinate with another to back it up. You can see it in the fake Russian Dossier for example, one party throws it out, another picks it up and runs with it giving the impression for the weak minded that it represents some kind of truth.
This seems to be going along with the playbook, they put out the video of President Trumps statement and then rushed to quash it in a spectacularly public fashion and not only do they get to reinforce the idea that Trump spreads misinformation, but that You Tube 'gets tough' on their own kind.
Its an action that serves all their purposes.
Why not air them on the alternate channels? Long-haired libertarian-impersonators urging everyone to vote for Trump and Greene Teeth advertise all sorts of alternatives to Youtube.
In essence, YouTube does not distinguish between Trump saying the election was stolen and a third party saying that Trump says the election was stolen. Suffice it to say this is not a very intelligent policy.
But we're pretty sure that LaMDA has a soul.

Election officials found more than 2,600 uncounted votes in Floyd County, Ga., northwest of Atlanta. Most of the votes favor President Donald Trump
Those uncounted ballots are not evidence of voter fraud...
I'm sure NOTHING EVER will be.............
And all undeniable evidence will be auto-marked as misinformation.
Floyd County is red you stupid twit and those ballots were found on Nov 15 and counted in the Georgia totals. It changed Biden's margin by about -800.
Oh thank goodness they found the "evidence" and corrected it...
Now that "evidence" is just misinformation and conspiracy theories.. /s
"Uncounted ballots *aren't* evidence of voter fraud...", Joe Friday...
Start with the name of one of the companies that makes voting machines - Dominion - and work back wards.
The owners of Dominion are out of the country (Canada I do believe) and all of them are members of a "Greener Society" lobbying group.
"U.S. finds no evidence flaws in Dominion voting machines were ever exploited"
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dominion-voting-machines-2020-election-cisa/
""I told them it was crazy stuff and they were wasting their time on it, and they were doing a great disservice to the country," Barr said of the Dominion conspiracy theories, which were consistently pushed by Trump and his allies. "I saw absolutely zero basis for the allegations, but they were made in such a sensational way that they obviously were influencing a lot of people.""
As the Jan. 6 committee continues to lay out its evidence surrounding the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election, a federal judge on Thursday ruled that a defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion -- a voting machine company at the heart of a number of "Big Lie" conspiracy theories -- against far-right news outlet Newsmax is allowed to proceed.
Judge Eric M. Davis denied Newsmax's motion to dismiss the $1.6 billion civil suit. .....
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/dominions-2020-election-lawsuit-newsmax-move-forward-judge/story?id=85468016
Worship CBS and ABC.. Let's get right to the point Joe.... When mail-in voting was agreed on by State Legislation it's authenticity was defended BY its results being consistent with in-person votes... It's "authenticity" was BLOWN-AWAY by the 2020 election.
There are you-tube video's of people's TVs on YouTube showing crazy number changes right in front of the entire World (Some with actual vote subtraction numbers).
Your CBS and NBC reporter "evidence" isn't going to convince me it wasn't a dirty election... PROVE why all these abnormalities are legitimate and then I'll listen... So far the only 'PROOF' of legitimacy has been "where's the proof it wasn't" while compulsively being ignorant and waving away any evidence that obviously DOES exist.
Bad decision by You Tube, but hey, they can ddo what they want. Obviously stupid fucks like TJJ aren't paying attention anyway, but most sensible people watching, including independents and Republicans not brain dead can see that Trumps own team knew the fraud claim was and is complete bullshit from a desperate loser too many believe. As Cheney noted. Trump will be gone someday but the dishonor of most in the GOP leadership will remain.
Prove it Joe... Support changing voting laws to In-Person with valid picture I.D., transparent counting per-ballot and multiple 3rd parties to verify legitimacy. It's not as-if the suspicion couldn't be addressed THAT simply..
When I went to vote they jumped off their chairs when I went to show them my photo I.D... "No, no; We just need any utility bill from this year.", they stated... So ?any? Utility Company is validating citizenship for voting authenticity now???

Hoisted by their own petard! Hilarious.
A police officer is called to the scene of a dead body. Upon arriving, he sees there is a bullet wound to the back of the head. He finds a handgun 20 feet away. There is no fingerprints on the gun. No witnesses and no other evidence found. This was obviously a suicide because no evidence was found that another person murdered the victim.
Just because you cannot find evidence of something does not mean it didn't happen.
Robby, I'm old and starting to forget stuff. Will you please remind me what's 'good journalism.'
Why we are discussed about trump. What happen?

This should be in the new definition of 'Irony'.
