Instead of Helping Americans Battle Rising Prices, Biden Escalates 'Big Oil' Blame Game
Removing tariffs could save American households $800 this year. What is the White House waiting for?

President Joe Biden says that his top domestic priority is helping Americans weather a surge in prices the likes of which haven't been seen in four decades—but the president's actions leave more than a little room to question his commitment.
On Wednesday, for example, Biden fumed about how gas and oil companies are seeing "historically high profit margins" as prices at the pump have climbed to a national average of over $5 per gallon. In a series of letters to CEOs of several major oil producers, Biden threatened to use "all reasonable and appropriate…tools and emergency authorities" to force gas companies to increase refinery capacity and output.
There's widespread agreement among economists that higher profits are not what's driving inflation—something even Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen acknowledged last week. Biden blaming "Big Oil" for inflation in gas prices makes as much sense as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) blaming grocery stores for higher food prices. Or, for that matter, as much sense as Biden blaming oil companies for higher gas prices…in November of last year. This trick has already been tried and it already failed.
Biden can't flip a magic switch to increase the gasoline supply or otherwise bring down prices at the pump. Expanding the available supply supply of crude oil or the capacity of refineries takes time and money—and those investments are less likely to happen as long as the federal government's long-term energy policies are aimed at reducing the role of fossil fuels in the economy.
But there is one magic switch that Biden could flip tomorrow to save the average American household about $800 annually: he could repeal the tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump on steel, aluminum, solar panels, and many other goods imported from China.
Yes, it's fair to point out that repealing the tariffs won't solve inflation. It's likely that only higher interest rates or a debilitating recession will do that. But there's no doubt that tariffs are contributing to higher prices throughout the economy.
A study released earlier this year by the Peterson Institute of International Economics, a trade-focused think tank, found that a "feasible package" of tariff removals could drop the consumer price index by 1.3 percentage points and translate into $797 in savings for the average household. That study has been cited approvingly by economists like Larry Summers, who served as President Obama's Treasury Secretary, and Democratic politicians like Colorado Gov. Jared Polis.
How many Americans would like to have an extra $800 to help cover higher prices for the rest of the year? If you're not raising your hand, I'll gladly take your share.
Rather than take action, however, the White House is reportedly still mulling just how much of that $800 the average household deserves to see.
"An influential study this year predicted that a move to lift tariffs could save households $797 a year, but administration officials say the actual effect would most likely be far smaller, in part because there is no chance Mr. Biden will roll back all of the federal government's tariffs and other protectionist trade measures," The New York Times reported Wednesday.
That's a rather stunning statement, one that sums up just how out of touch the White House remains, even after months of professing sympathy for Americans being squeezed by higher prices.
Biden is still focused on scapegoating the blame for inflation on oil companies, the Russian war in Ukraine, and other factors. It might be an interesting academic exercise to debate how much of the current inflation was caused by various factors—including the American Rescue Plan, which dumped $1.9 trillion into the economy but somehow always managed to escape Biden's scrutiny.
But most Americans are probably less interested in that debate than they would be in having an extra $800.

It only bothers people that use spittin tobaccy to run their car.
Were those letters written in Arabic?
Just the numbers.
They were obviously less greedy a few years ago when prices were lower.
Remember the day oil was so low it had a negative price?
$-35 a barrel for West Texas Crude one Tuesday afternoon.
Thought Dems wanted high gas prices? Why are they crying?
Didn't Kerry just last week say they were going to make it tough on oil companies?
You get what you voted for.
Thought Dems wanted high gas prices?
They do. Everything is going exactly as planned out in the Green New Deal.
Why are they crying?
They're not crying, they're laughing in their private jets. We're the ones crying.
Private jets that will be exempt from the jet fuel tax in Europe.
As long as they do not carry any plastic straws.
These aren’t the kind of people that snort their cocaine thru plastic straws.
Yup. People voted for his promises. Stupid minions.
You know what’s more terrifying then the thought of the Democrats stealing the election?
The thought that 81 million Americans are so fucking stupid that they legitimately voted for this shit show of a presidency.
Biden threatened to use "all reasonable and appropriate…tools and emergency authorities" to force gas companies to increase refinery capacity and output.
How about just getting out of their way?
Getting out of the way is not in the fascist playbook.
Getting in the way IS the fascist playbook.
'Removing tariffs could save American households $800 this year. What is the White House waiting for?
Fuck off Boehm. You're lying and also deliberately redirecting from the actual problem.
First he needs to stop working for the Saudis and Russians and allow North America to start producing again without bans, threats and chilling effect nonsense:
Biden administration freezes new oil and gas drilling leases 02/21/22
Second he's got to stop destroying North American transport infrastructure:
Biden Shutting Down Line 5 Pipeline Could Send Gas Prices Surging 11/08/21
Of course in crippling North American oil production, Biden is doing exactly what he promised: Biden Calls For Banning Oil Companies From All Drilling
"No more fossil fuel industry. No more drilling on federal lands. No more drilling, including offshore. No ability for the oil industry to continue to drill, period. Ends."
He's a man of his word.
What is so funny is that the greenies actually think switching from fossil fuels will end the mining and drilling for them. Even if everyone was able to switch to renewables and electric vehicles tomorrow (a myth but I'll grant it for the sake of discussion) there are no better sources of hydrocarbons around, and hydrocarbons fuel our modern economy, even discounting energy production. There isn't a facet of modern life (including solar panels and windmills) that don't rely on plastics or other products derived from hydrocarbons, mainly from fossil fuels. Medicine? Nope. Electronics? Nope. Solar panels? Nope. Windmills? Nope (in fact they require a huge amount of lubricants derived from petroleum, also). Clothing? Very few. Electrical lines? Nope. Computers? Nope. Television and radio? Nope. Etc. Ending fossil fuels for energy may decrease the demand but it won't even come close to ending the demand.
I’m reminded of that protest in California about a decade ago? where everyone took to their kayaks to fill a bay in California protesting oil drilling.
Most people barely pass high school chemistry. To them organic chemistry is akin to black magic.
I am very well educated, both in biology and chemistry. O-Chem was still black magic.
That said, most people lack the imagination to realize how much plastic benefits their lives, or were it comes from.
God help you if you start telling them about where Helium comes from, and how everything from medical applications (like MRIs) to industrial applications to science research depends on it.
Or how much a waste helium balloons are of a rare, but very needed, resource.
Oh, I agree, the only C I got in my bachelor's was O-Chem. Got A's in the two courses, both biochemistry classes, that it was a prerequisite for.
I understand the forces involved and how it impacts the shape and function of enzyme, but trying to draw the result of an organic reaction was much more difficult.
Organic chem convinced me to drop my hard science major for math. Pot and booze convinced me to drop math for Econ.
For the average urban liberal, with green pretensions but no hard-core renewable acolyte knowledge, energy comes from the wall socket, and other stuff comes from Amazon. Even general ideas about raw materials, production, and transportation are beyond them. But they "know" oil is bad.
Quite. I ran into a guy in St. Paul recently, at the Union Station, who was amazed I raised cattle. He thought they had all gone extinct. Didn't know people still raised them he said. I'm not sure how he figured milk and meat showed up at his store and restaurants?
If I didn’t already know you as a regular commentator, I wouldn’t believe this story. That’s fucked. And I’m still open to the possibility you’re bullshitting.
He quite likely was a transient, given the location and his clothing. But I don't know that for sure.
Maybe he’s one of those poor folk they’ve already got eating bugs.
I've eaten bugs a time or two. They really don't taste like anything.
I can believe it. There's a lefty/progressive idiot on youtube named Kyle Kulinski. Moron claims to be a policy wonk and doesn't even know what farms are.
He may be so citified he never knew cattle is a bunch of cows / steers.
There's a lot of that amongst the urban.
Thoughts?

Extreme heat and humidity killed thousands of cattle in Kansas this week so far. An estimated 10,000 heads of fat cattle dead.
[Link]
Pre cooked steaks!
"humidity killed fat cattle" = "city folks with no fucking clue"
Probably feed lot finishing cattle, that's generally what they mean when they say fattened cattle. It's an industry term for cattle in the finishing phase. 10,000 head is a lot, probably a significant percentage of finished cattle, so expect boxed beef prices to raise in conjunction with this die off.
It's an industry term for cattle in the finishing phase.
"10,000 head*s* of *fat* cattle."? Killed by heat and humidity? No. They don't know what they're talking about.
Further, sorry no, unless it spontaneously got up to 180°F in the middle of Kansas, those animals died because somebody locked them in a feed lot and didn't give them any shade or water (assuming they weren't all given bad feed, weren't deliberately culled by being put in a feed lot to roast, etc.), not because of the heat and humidity.
Did you see the video? It's not entirely clear that he's not calling them 'fat' because he doesn't understand that the carcasses are bloated in the heat.
No, I didn't watch the video. But fat cattle is an older industry term, not as much used today but still in use. As I didn't watch the video, I don't know if he was using it correctly or not. As for how and why they died, heat and humidity can contribute to respiratory illness (especially) and other pathogens. That's a lot of money lost. Figure average weight is 1400 pounds. Live cattle are selling for $1.38/pound. That means they lost $19,320,000. No, that isn't due to negligence or conspiracy. As for heat and humidity, most cattle breeds in the US are mostly Bos Taurus breeds, which tend to be much more head sensitive, and especially when humidity is high. This is especially true of British breeds like Angus and Hereford (the two most popular beef breeds by far). As a animal scientist I find nothing suspicious about 10,000 head of cattle dying because of excessive heat and humidity (the nighttime temperatures are the key). Most high producing cattle states tend to have low humidity (humidity is the killer) and even if they have high day time highs tend to have cooler nights. Florida and East Texas are the biggest exception to this rule, however, they tend to have a high percentage of Bos Indicus in their herds. Bos Indicus are tropical breeds and much better adapted persistent heat and humidity (also less susceptible to pathogens associated with heat and humidity). Bos Indicus however have tougher meat and don't finish as well as British Bos Taurus breeds. Looking at the picture, the cattle appear to be primarily Angus, who really aren't the best breed for heat and or humidity tolerance. They're far more susceptible to heat stroke than other breeds. Especially black Angus.
It's quite possible however, that your point about shade played a huge factor. A lot of feedlots don't have shade. There are some reasons for that, but it's definitely probably a contributing factor.
No, I didn't watch the video. But fat cattle is an older industry term, not as much used today but still in use.
OK, I'm being too polite. Post was made by Ian Miles Cheong reposted From Viral News NY. Dude looks almost exactly as much "country" as Tim Pool.
And more my point isn't exactly to ascribe motive as to say it wasn't *just* heat or just *heat and humidity*, and per the shared point, it's *accumulated heat*. I'm certain we've both seen animals in distress from the heat. I'm fairly certain neither one of us would accept "They were all dead before we could turn around!" or "They were all fine just a minute ago!". It was 100-104 over 3 days with peak 35% RH. Which absolutely will kill animals locked in a feed lot for all 3 days but is very survivable by grazing animals and easily fixable in 3 days for well less than $19M. Whether they couldn't get diesel fuel or parts to ship the cattle off to market or back to pasture or whomever put them in the feed lot drove into a ditch and is waking up in the hospital right now or what, I don't know, but it wasn't 'just the heat and humidity' that killed them.

Sort'a like the Libs who think "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is in the Constitution.
They also do not seem to grasp the issue of needing an on-demand electric grid. Solar and wind might be nice and all...but they sure as hell are not on-demand (plus, as others point out, solar panels require mining that would make environmentalists vomit).
Their lifestyle crumbles if the lights are out for any length of time, and a grid heavily focused on solar and wind will be out frequently.
You gotta stop taking these people at face value, man.

One of the WH peeps was just on I believe ABC talking about how awful the profits of these companies were, how they should be taking losses to help out Americans during this time. In the same interview she said their goal is still to get people off oil in 5 to 10 years.
So she is asking the companies to invest at a loss now so they can be put out of business soon.
It was amazing to watch.
Hard to tell if someone like that is retarded, evil, or both.
Both. Evil is as evil does. Retarded or genius, he is evil.
So,e are retarded. All are evil. As the democrat party is life evil.
I just love the "record high profits" mantra of the left. If I sell a barrel of oil at 1% profit and that barrel sells for $20, I make $0.20/barrel. If the price of that barrel increases to $120/barrel, I make $1.20/barrel. If oil companies are making record profits, that is the result of our government, not the oil companies.
Want a hoot?
Ask Biden who makes more on a gallon of gas, oil companies or the government?
https://simulationcommander.substack.com/p/joe-biden-ready-to-use-emergency
Biden did exactly that, bypassing normal rule-making procedures and using executive orders to shut down the Keystone pipeline and numerous other domestic energy projects. At the time, ‘cause-and-effect theorists’ pointed out the obvious consequences to these actions, namely higher energy prices that translate into higher everything prices.
Now that these theories are turning into reality in the form of $5/gallon gas and outrageous grocery bills, Joe Biden is once again prepared to ignore normal rule-making procedures and instead order the nation’s largest oil companies to increase production. Yet even when a normal person would admit they were wrong and beg forgiveness, Biden continues to lie and blame everybody else for our problems:
There is reason for those “I did that” stickers on the gas pumps.
The Nazi-Regime cares nothing about the USA.. The USA never gave the 'feds' any authority to shut-down pipelines. Regulating trade amongst the States doesn't include shutting down entire resources - it was specifically there to prevent trade wars amongst the States.

What we really need is a government committee to tell companies how much oil to drill and how much to sell it for. That's what will fix the market, surely. We just need the right experts.
We could call it the “central planning committee “.

Biden should be looking back at how FDR enlisted the private sector to gear up for WWII. We may not like all of FDR, but he gathered CEOs and asked what they could provide and sent them out to do the work. The rest of his new deal shit was nuts.
That won’t work. Biden can’t beat them down with one hand and simultaneously ask them to stick their necks out to help. The only solution is to remove the democrats and replace them with Americans.
Biden should also be put on trial for child rape.

Democrats can fix the problems by not being Nazi's (National Socialists)... Your indoctrination is entirely B.S.
Higher prices are supposed to induce more production.
Oh, I wonder why that's not happening. Shocking development: when you increase costs of compliance and advertise further pressure on an industry, aggregate supply from that industry both declines and becomes less elastic.
More justification for ending the democrat party now, and criminalizing the practice of Marxism. The mere existence elf a democrat party is damaging this country.
Wouldn’t we all rather have a free, prosperous country than tolerate the existence of leftists who only want to destroy us?

When government threatens to shut you down...why would you spend millions upon millions to increase capacity? Government picking winners and losers is not capitalism.

Like most people i wont save $800.00 since I'm not buying steel or solar panels and I can quit drinking beer if I'm worried about the price of aluminum. another failed argument. that said as a building designer if people quit building houses I'll loose more than $800.00 but that has little to do with the tariffs and more about our failed country since the tariffs were there before JB destroyed it.
See my comment down thread. Investment banks all over the free world were punished for fossil fuel investment, per the Paris Climate Accords and Green New Deal Democrats. The SEC now wants to move to a green credit score, more punishment and shaming.
Can’t build houses without cement, which needs investment in fossil fuels.
The global unelected bureaucratic government, world bank, IMF, WHO, there’s a global climate bureaucracy are a bunch of diversity equity inclusion majors. It’s all collapsing now.
"...It’s all collapsing now..."
Unfortunately on those with skin in the game, not the bureaucrats.
Remove tariffs? That's a good one. During the Obama Administration a local Specialty Steel Plant's Union was begging for a tariff. Obama ignored them. Trump gave them the tariff that they wanted and the Union whined about it. The Biden Administration is in the pocket of the Unions, there's no way they are going to get rid of tariffs. I find it funny that tariffs were one the original ways for the Federal Government to finance itself, before there was an income tax.
Four materials rank highest on the scale of necessity, forming the four pillars of modern civilization: cement, steel, plastics, and ammonia are needed in larger quantities than are other essential inputs. The world now produces annually about 4.5 billion tons of cement, 1.8 billion tons of steel, nearly 400 million tons of plastics, and 180 million tons of ammonia. But it is ammonia that deserves the top position as our most important material: its synthesis is the basis of all nitrogen fertilizers, and without their applications it would be impossible to feed, at current levels, nearly half of today’s nearly 8 billion people.
Mass scale depends on the combustion of fossil fuels
The socialists Climate Jihad divestment was always going to starve us, only now it’s realizing the socialist motherland Utopia.

Still waiting for the mea culpa from reason for their Biden votes. It's like it never happened.
Instead of Helping Americans Battle Rising Prices, Biden Escalates 'The Big Lie' That is He is Somehow Competent
-Adolph would be so proud of Biden
Since tariffs are just taxes, that means either taxes go up $800 per household or (more likely) the debt goes up $800 per household.
In other words, eliminating tariffs would have the same effect as taking on another $80 billion in debt and using it as a stimulus payment for American households. That's the last thing we need in this inflationary environment.
Really, Boehm, your suggestion is idiotic.
It is really indicative of the state of "libertarianism" that the knee-jerk reaction of a Reason writer in light of 8.6% inflation and $31 trillion national debt is: "how can we reduce government revenue, increase the debt, and hand out more money to consumers to spend".
Inflation is the market's way of telling consumers "buy less stuff". You can't fix inflation by somehow giving consumers the means to buy more stuff again.
US government debt is upwards of $300000/household. Like it or not: US households will pay that back, either through inflation, or through taxation, or through recession (lost growth).
