If Glenn Youngkin Has to Answer for Trump, Terry McAuliffe Really Has to Answer for Randi Weingarten

Parents are at their wits' end and that might cost the Democrats the governor's race.

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is running against Republican challenger Glenn Youngkin to get his old job back as governor of the commonwealth. But McAuliffe clearly wishes that he was running against former President Donald Trump.

Indeed, McAuliffe is so eager to tie Youngkin to Trump that when the ex-president failed to appear at any of Youngkin's campaign rallies, the Democratic candidate simply fabricated a joint event. "Guess how Glenn Youngkin is finishing his campaign?" McAuliffe asked a gathered crowd at his own campaign event Monday night, according to POLITICO. "He is doing an event with Donald Trump here in Virginia."

This was not true. Trump is not in Virginia and has never come to Virginia to campaign on Youngkin's behalf. (Trump did hold a last-minute "tele-rally" for Youngkin that did not involve the candidate.)

McAuliffe has by now tried to associate Youngkin with Trump so frequently that Youngkin eventually released a campaign ad in response, making fun of McAuliffe for saying the word Trump so many times.

Trump is the de facto leader of the Republican Party, and very few Republican political figures are willing to denounce him and risk alienating his supporters. (Those who have denounced him were quickly marginalized.) It's thus fair to make Republicans own that association: Trump is their man, and they have to answer for him.

But if Youngkin has to answer for Trump—someone he has taken great pains to avoid—shouldn't McAuliffe be held responsible for the company he actively chooses to keep?

McAuliffe is closing out his campaign by elevating a close surrogate on education issues: American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, an individual who bears more responsibility than anyone else for the U.S. school system's total abdication of responsibility to families during the COVID-19 pandemic. "When history books are written about why U.S. K-12 schools were more closed than those of any other rich country, Weingarten will be on the cover," wrote Reason's Matt Welch.

McAuliffe recently gave parents the impression that he does not believe they deserve a say over school curriculum; after this proved to be a controversial remark, he half-heartedly tried to walk it back. But Weingarten's view on the matter is abundantly clear: She recently tweeted a link to an opinion column in The Washington Post titled, "Parents claim they have the right to shape their kids' school curriculum. They don't." Weingarten added the comment: "Great piece on parents' rights and public schools."

Great piece on parents' rights and #publicschools.  https://t.co/0DMghTjRBN

— Randi Weingarten ????????????????????????????‍???????? (@rweingarten) October 25, 2021

By any fair standard, McAuliffe has to own that view, too.

On Twitter, MSNBC's Chris Hayes writes that he's intrigued by the salience of "education" issues in the Virginia gubernatorial race, even though the complaints about schools seem to have changed. "A year ago it was going to be all about how schools were still closed!" he tweeted. "Then they opened and it was both masks and" critical race theory.

But there's a very clear link between the two. Throughout the pandemic, the education system asked working families to make tremendous sacrifices. Teachers expected parents to take a much more involved role in their children's school routines, ensuring that they turned on their screens and logged into virtual classes, etc. For many parents, this was a significant ask. Some of them did not like what they saw, and have questions about the curriculum. Now schools have reopened—though constant COVID-19 induced closures continue to cause frustrations—and parents are suddenly being told that they shouldn't be so involved, that it's the job of school boards and government officials to educate the kids.

Many parents are undoubtedly at their wits' end. That is why education has become the most important issue in the Virginia governor's race—and why it was such a mistake for Democrats to ignore irate protesters at school board meetings, or worse, insult them as potential "domestic terrorists."

McAuliffie recently suggested that he's proud of the Virginia school system, and strongly implied that he had sent his own kids to the commonwealth's public schools. "We have a great school system in Virginia, Dorothy and I have raised our five children, of course parents are involved in it," he said.

Four of McAuliffe's five children attended private school.

Why would he want to distance himself from Weingarten? He completely agrees with her.

    1. Zeb   4 years ago

Answer for is the same as distance from. He's got to own the crazy shit she says and that will not make parents happy.
I think that's what he's trying to say.

      1. Zeb   4 years ago

        Is not the same.

      2. DesigNate   4 years ago

        Ahhh.

I don't think Democrats really care if they have to answer for anything after so many years of not really being held to account by voters.

        1. Zeb   4 years ago

Probably not. But you mess with people's kids at your peril. That gets people's attention.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

This is why I keep hammering on the fact that if you are resigned to have your kids in public schools, you need to start getting involved in the areas where this shit matters. That means things like school board and PTA meetings, and running for open slots when the opportunity comes up.

Contrary to what chemtard claims, it means being heavily involved in what your kids are being taught--the majority of teachers are just going through the motions, but there is a very specific, dedicated claque of commie true believers (especially the ones right out of college) that will maliciously undermine and subvert your relationship with your kids. It doesn't mean demanding that your kid wasn't being treated fairly if they don't get As--it means being cognizant of what your kids are being taught in the classroom. It's hardly a coincidence that a lot of this shit blew up after widespread distance learning started, as the teachers and school districts couldn't hide their agenda anymore.

Same shit goes for your local community as well. If you don't like your town being run by busybody shitlibs, start volunteering for local planning boards and attending city council meetings, and push back against shit you don't like. These places are all breeding grounds for people who go on to state and federal-level offices. Impact your community at the ground level, and you'll have the chance to do it with the big kids, too.

Until the non-left gets over its aversion to confrontation and starts putting some skin in the game, they're going to continue to be marginalized.

            1. Reshufflex   4 years ago

Dead on. The lunatic fringe isn’t interested in kids, parents, education or anything pedagogic. All a ruse. Its interest is historical necessity, ideological necessity.

The Cause. All is expendable for the Utopian power delusion. All things athwart traditionalism and the white guy pedigree are the targets. Divide and conquer, make that stuff the “other.”

Secondly, establish dominion of the minds. Start young. A Hitler youth redux. Then, control culture and the media. The institutions have to fall in line.

Time to unleash the dogs. Or one day you’ll wake up, and you won’t recognize anything anymore. Not even yourself.

        2. Patriotic Guy   4 years ago

Not accountable to the media either.

    2. Hank Phillips   4 years ago

Just like Youngkin agrees with Robert Dear and Donald Trump, but does not want voters to find out until after it's too late.
Youngkin on women's rights: “I’m going to be really honest with you. The short answer is in this campaign, I can’t. When I’m governor and I have a majority in the House we can start going on offense. But as a campaign topic, sadly, that in fact won’t win my independent votes that I have to get.” Republican National Socialism v. Democrat Soviet Communism is "both" Virginia Kleptocracy halves.

Terry McAuliffe Really Has to Answer for Randi Weingarten

    1. He's beholden to the teacher's unions.
    2. He believes that we would achieve utopia if only the right people were in charge. That's why you see this pattern of Dem candidates using "big names" like Obama, Springsteen, etc., to try and sway the electorate.

    1. Chumby   4 years ago

Springsteen once did a shoutout at a concert for that piece of shit Preet Bharara.

      1. DesigNate   4 years ago

        That's disappointing but not surprising.

  5. Enjoy Every Sandwich   4 years ago

Since I actually live in Virginia, I have no interest in Trump whatsoever. My interest is in what the next governor--whoever it ends up being--is going to do about issues here in the state.

Today 16 million Virginians will confidently vote for the status quo.

  6. Chupacabra   4 years ago

    Randi is one ugly dude.

    1. Hank Phillips   4 years ago

Stalin was uglier than Hitler. This whole Kleptocracy business imported from Europe now subsidizes National Socialists who want schools as HitlerJugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel and funds equally altruistic communists urging schools as Communist Youth League brain laundromats. We've seen how well this panned out for Europe, so why import it here?

  7. Chumby   4 years ago

Randi causes nobody to feel randy thus nobody will be feeling Randi.

  8. floridalegal   4 years ago

Anyone who believes that Randi Weingarten and the UNION representing teachers have the slightest interest in students and education is profoundly disturbed/misinformed. Bringing Randi Weingarten out as your political " closer " is delusional and detached from reality.

    1. Marshal   4 years ago

Why do you think their appeal is the same as yours? Only a minority of people have children in public school at any point in time, and half of those support the indoctrination plan. On the other hand McAuliffe is speaking to government employees "right" to be free of oversight. For people who self-selected for government work where standards and accountability are notoriously lacking the right to continue without accountability is a major lifestyle issue.

  9. Overt   4 years ago

This whole parents rights thing just shows how the left and Unions want to have it both ways. They will be the first to show you that a child's success is heavily dependent on the education level of the parent; they will be the first to insist that parents volunteer in the class room; that they read with the kids at night. But the second it comes to their jobs and money, they suddenly do not believe that parents are so important.

    1. Mickey Rat   4 years ago

And if the school is failing to educate its students, it is the parent's fault.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

More to the point, they want parents to be involved ONLY if that means pushing the left-liberal agenda. Notice how they're throwing out buzzwords like "politicization" and "toxicity" and "divisive" as pejoratives during a period where they are getting serious, hard pushback, as these are the first go-to complaints when they can't roll their agenda on through without resistance. The left got VERY comfortable using these posts as sinecure slots with little real oversight from the community, and they weren't prepared for an environment where they'd have to take on any kind of real, actual pushback.

  10. Jerryskids   4 years ago

I would rather see McAuliffe pressed to answer for the Clintons.

That McAuliffe quote about him and his wife raising their children juxtaposed to praising the the public schools is master full phrasing for being misleading without technically lying.

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

Depends on what the meaning of is, is.

  14. Kristian H.   4 years ago

"McAuliffe recently gave parents the impression that he does not believe they deserve a say over school curriculum;"

He said, and I quote, "I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach." Gave parent the impression. What twaddle.

  15. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   4 years ago

Parents are at their wits' end and that might cost the Democrats the governor's race.

Not likely. Remember, this is the state which embraced and ignore Governor Blackface's scandal-- a version of blackface that ACTUALLY WAS RACIST.

As Iowahawk pointed out, Governor Blackface didn't have a miraculous comeback in the public eye, his "comeback" was, "if you do something racist, be a democrat".

  16. Dillinger   4 years ago

With 65% reporting, the (R) is leading by just over 10%.

The vote is counted electronically. Ballots are scanned as they are cast.

Yet the big democrat strongholds have yet to report.

They are reporting that mail ballots take longer to count. Why? They should have been counted before polls close, just like the others.

Now we shall see if the R elections team learned anything. It sure doesn't look like it. If you let the other team count their votes after you give your total, don't be shocked if they figure out a way to find the number needed.

I went to high school in Fairfax county, VA. It's one of the best-funded school districts in the country.

At the time, only one of the teachers there was a blatant lefturd piece of shit, and I remember him handing out a sheet that he claimed was the LP platform, which did state many of the LP's policy positions, but omitted any of the reasons for them.

He passed it out and told the kids "this is the Libertarian platform, it should be good for a laugh". It was the first time I realized that a public school teacher was an agent of state indoctrination.

Fuck you, Mr. Woods, you commie scumbag.

The LP platform in its entirety takes about 20 minutes to read--now as in 1972. The Kleptocracy platforms each take several hours to wade through. The Virginia LP lists "agree" and "disagree" comparisons with Kleptocracy factions on its website. The simplest comparison is:
Libertarian: maximize defense of individual rights and minimize coercion at service-pistol gunpoint.
All Kleptocracy factions: minimize defense of individual rights and maximize coercion at service-pistol gunpoint. They disagree only on priorities when it comes down to cases.

You know, by now I can think of many ways to taunt you very hard for this post, given how things are shifting right now. I learned that on twitter, youtube, foxnews and here from folks like you.

      But I won't.

      However:

"the GOP got fucking crushed in California and what we’re expected to learn from that is that California is just full of wierdoes."

I don't know what you want to say by that. I think the CA result was way more predictable and less indicative of anything than what we might be seeing tonight. CA is ideological-warrior-style blue. Newsom isn't sucked-dry and colorless, but slippery-slimy and colorblind. McAuliffe losing where he is means orders of magnitude more than Newsom winning where he is.

    Hey guys,

Isn’t it time for Terry to refuse to concede, throw a fucking tantrum, get his friends in the Virginia legislature to try to overturn the election, go to court and file ridiculous and frivolous charges. Then, if all that doesn’t work he can get his supporters together to attack the police and legislators. Sounds like a plan.

And when Randi Weingarten supports him in this, it will be reasonable to compare her to Trump.

That you missed the satire here is telling.

        1. 5.56   4 years ago

Satire born out of butthurt is still something that indicates being triggered. That is what Jimbo pointed out. The whoosh award goes to you.

          1. JasonT20   4 years ago

No, because Jimbo bringing up Stacey Abrams is not comparable to anything Trump did.

Jimbo (and you) are the ones being "triggered" here. Anyone trying to point out the blatant attack on democracy itself carried out by Trump and his allies has you all scrambling to try and engage in whataboutism and failing badly at it.

If Glenn Youngkin Has to Answer for Trump, Terry McAuliffe Really Has to Answer for Randi Weingarten

Uh, in what universe is anything Randi Weingarten has done comparable to the things that Youngkin won't respond to about Trump?

Did something keep you up all night?

      1. JasonT20   4 years ago

Not this election, no. But I saw this headline in the morning and just boggled at the attempted false equivalence here between anything Randi Weingarten has ever been accused of by her detractors and the things that Trump has been accused of and criticized for.

Do I have TDS? Yes. I am constantly appalled by the degree to which Trump's most rabid supporters are deranged and try and twist and excuse everything about him.

        1. 5.56   4 years ago

          "Do I have TDS? Yes."

Noted and bookmarked. The recent developments must keep you up at night then. Especially after every time the left loses, it must be a victory for Trump. I would bet that Trump is one of the most commonly occurring names on the internet by now. The man is really a big deal to you.

          1. JasonT20   4 years ago

He's a really big deal to his followers as well. The ones that insist that, any day now, the irrefutable proof that the election was stolen from him will come out and the Supreme Court will have to reinstall him as the real President. The ones that stormed the Capitol to try and stop Congress from doing its constitutional duty to read and announce the results of the Electoral College votes.

            "Noted and bookmarked."

Oh, and I don't doubt that you will continue to quote that statement just like you did there, without the context of the following sentence explaining my sarcasm in saying that. That is, that my "Trump Derangement Syndrome" is due to the derangement of the rabid Trump supporters, which apparently includes you, that will do anything to excuse and dismiss and distract from any and all criticism of Trump.

New Jersey Governors race... It is 6:30 am the next day ..... And only 84% of the vote is counted.

    How is that possible?

All you have to do is copy everyone else. Florida had that problem with the Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach areas.... So they replaced the elections supervisors. Done. The very next election, the results were reported on time.

Everything is electronic these days. There is no legitimate reason for things to take days. And it isn't everywhere... It is always just a couple of counties, and always the same counties.

There is your clue, people. Either incompetence or corruption. Either way, get new people and increase your oversight.

When it comes to School Boards versus Parents, it appears Parents won. Not only did the GOP win the Virginia Governor's race, they also won the Lt. Gov and Atty General races as well. And, the big bonus is that it appears they flipped six seats in the House of Delegates to have the majority 51 to 49.

I don't understand why the Dems thought vilifying parents was a winning strategy. Also, I told several people last year when school districts sent the children home to have their education monitored by their parents, that the parents were not going to like what they learned. The push back against progressive indoctrination in schools was an unintended consequence of the teacher's union pushing for the teachers to stay home and collect a check while at the same time thinking they could keep pushing their leftist views onto the students. The parents become "woke" in a way the left were not expecting.

A positive side effect from Covid? Children at home and parents got a first had view of what their children are being taught.
The case for school choice has never been greater.
