Brickbat: Say What?

An Alberta judge has sentenced two Calgary-based street preachers and a cafe owner to "preach science" after the three were convicted of contempt of court for inciting others to violate public health orders. Court of Queen's Bench Justice Adam Germain sentenced Artur Pawlowski to 18 months probation and a $23,000 fine ($18,620 U.S.), Dawid Pawlowski to 12 months probation and a $10,000 fine ($8,100 U.S.), and Christopher Scott to 18 months probation and a $20,000 fine ($16,190 U.S.). He said that while on probation if the men wish to continue to speak out against mask mandates they must present the other side of the argument. Germain suggested they say, "I am aware that the views I am expressing to you on this occasion may not be views held by the majority of medical experts in Alberta. While I may disagree with them, I am obliged to inform you that the majority of medical experts favor social distancing, mask-wearing, and avoiding large crowds to reduce the spread of COVID-19."

Let me guess, banning this sort of crap would be just as much an affront to liberty as the order itself, right?

You could scarcely engineer a better crisis for governments to use as an excuse to assert a level of control they've always wanted.
One of the conservative talk radio guys had this dude on yesterday... At least I think it was him. He has a church and got in trouble for opening his church. He came to the US to speak, and drew clouds because he grew up in the Soviet Union and had a thing or two to say about where we are headed.
The judge noted that he was speaking to the media and crowds in the US, so banned him from travel and ordered the compelled speech of self denunciation.
Soviet survivor took umbrage. Said he ain't doing it. Had plenty to say about how it resembled the show trials of his childhood. defendants had to read prepared statements praising the state and denouncing their beliefs.
Warns that we are headed the same way here in the US.
He drew crowds. There were large crowds. I mean, there may have been clouds too...
Darn, and I thought he had actually figured out how to cast the weather control miracle. That's an 8th level spell right there.
Perhaps the climastrologists should give him a call.
if you want to lose weight you have to read this first.... http://www.Fitapp1.com
One could say he was metaphorically drawing clouds concerning the future of the US.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still somehow, its clouds illusions I recall.
They don't see themselves as like the Soviets, but then I suppose the Soviet apparatchik themselves didn't do a lot of introspection either.
He d£ew c£owds. Not Craw, C£aw! Flown lice!
Take your meds.

No offense but I think you're vastly underestimating the level of control they really want. My guess is there's another 80% more that they'd really like. It wouldn't satisfy them mind you simply because it's a really slippery slope.
Canadians don't have a First Amendment that protects you from compelled speech. Here in America, we do have a First Amendment that protects your free speech rights. Which is why government has to lean on private businesses to suppress your rights, and may I say they're doing a wonderful job at it.
Exactly so.
Guess Canadians are left out in the cold.
Without abouts on their feet.
That is also why speech protections in the US are under attack. Whether it is section 230 or hate speech laws the government is trying hard to break people of their expectations of free speech protections. That business is willing and able to help them is just gravy for the feds.

Oh, Canada
Is there a link to the court transcript in its original German?
Only Roundhead English and Robespierre French.
Don't you mean Chinese?
Canada; so close, not so far away.
Just read the linked story and browsed through some of the comments; Canadians sure seem to love them some authority. Admittedly a brief observation on my part, but is there any real desire on the part of Canadian citizens to have actual freedom? At least Australians take to the street and provoke their authorities on a larger scale.
Americans love their authoritarians too.
In this case what they fail to grasp is that the remedy for 'bad' speech is more 'good' speech. Applying more force excites the indoctrinated but undermines them elsewhere.
Of course it does; no one who harps about needing more government ever seems to realize that what they empower them to do unto others, gets done unto them as well.
Sort of like an inverse golden rule; possibly related to the iron rule of oligarchy.

Reading from Science, Chapter 1, Verse 1:
In the beginning Man created the humors and the vapors...
BELIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEVE in the Science! The One True SCIENCE!
>>Germain suggested they say ...
those pesky Germans suggesting what people say ...
Only if they think it is germane.
