A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy is under investigation after accidentally firing his or her weapon in a courtroom. The sheriff's department did not issue a notice of the shooting as it typically does when a deputy fires a weapon. And it refused to answer questions from the media about the circumstances of the discharge or whether anyone was injured. The Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources, said the bullet struck another deputy's radio but no one was injured.

Should be an instant firing, and whatever criminal sanction L.A. has for unlawful discharge of a firearm. 'Should be'...LOL.

Modern handguns don't fire unless you pull the trigger (Sig 320 woes, aside...). But they will always fire when you do. So don't mess around near the trigger.

I spend a lot of time with and around firearms; I've found that as soon as you begin to "assume" you've got the safety all down, that bad things can happen. A weapon you were "certain" you unloaded still has a round in it; a loaded weapon [aren't they all?] is left unsecured. Etc.

Everyone needs to be aware of the four rules, all the time. Not obsessed, but aware.

1. All weapons are loaded all the time [unless I've broken it down myself and am cleaning or servicing it, in which case it damned sure better be unloaded]
2. Never point the muzzle, intentionally or unintentionally, at anything or anyone you do not want to kill or destroy
3. Always be aware of what is beyond or adjacent to your target, as well as the target itself; whatever the bullet fired from you weapon hits, is on you.
4. And most importantly, and for this officer, KEEP YOU FUCKING FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE ON TARGET AND READY TO FIRE!

Since it’s the main stream media, of course there’s no mention about the make or caliber of the firearm in question.
It would not surprise me if the current question is a Glock.
They are famous for negligent discharge usually injuring the owner in the leg, that’s the famous “Glock leg syndrome “.
These types of guns have no external thumb safety so as soon as anything touches the trigger, they go off.
Flicking off a safety takes about 1/10 of one second..
Yet it adds so much to safety when you have an external thumb safety.
The other problem with Glock and other similar pistols is the need to pull the trigger when you take the gun apart for cleaning.
This is design flaw that also results in many negligent discharges.
There are plenty of striker fired pistols that are available in models both with and without safeties that do not require pulling the trigger to field strip.
For instance the Sig 365 among many others.
Why people continue to buy guns with this serious design flaw is beyond me.
When I teach people about guns I make a huge point tell them buy one that does not require pulling the trigger to take it apart.
