Brickbat: Aww, Shoot

|

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy is under investigation after accidentally firing his or her weapon in a courtroom. The sheriff's department did not issue a notice of the shooting as it typically does when a deputy fires a weapon. And it refused to answer questions from the media about the circumstances of the discharge or whether anyone was injured. The Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources, said the bullet struck another deputy's radio but no one was injured.

  1. “I’m the only one in this room, that I know of, professional enough to carry this Glock 40.”

Should be an instant firing, and whatever criminal sanction L.A. has for unlawful discharge of a firearm. ‘Should be’…LOL.

Modern handguns don’t fire unless you pull the trigger (Sig 320 woes, aside…). But they will always fire when you do. So don’t mess around near the trigger.

Jesus, it’s not that hard. (Which sounds like the punchline to a bad joke.)

    2. “Glock Leg.”

I spend a lot of time with and around firearms; I’ve found that as soon as you begin to “assume” you’ve got the safety all down, that bad things can happen. A weapon you were “certain” you unloaded still has a round in it; a loaded weapon [aren’t they all?] is left unsecured. Etc.

Everyone needs to be aware of the four rules, all the time. Not obsessed, but aware.

      1. All weapons are loaded all the time [unless I’ve broken it down myself and am cleaning or servicing it, in which case it damned sure better be unloaded]
      2. Never point the muzzle, intentionally or unintentionally, at anything or anyone you do not want to kill or destroy
      3. Always be aware of what is beyond or adjacent to your target, as well as the target itself; whatever the bullet fired from you weapon hits, is on you.
      4. And most importantly, and for this officer, KEEP YOU FUCKING FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE ON TARGET AND READY TO FIRE!

      1. 2) Does that mean I shouldn’t point the muzzle skyward unless I want to kill the sky? Or towards the ground unless I want to kill the Earth?

        1. Don’t be stupid.

I know it’s hard, but do the best you can.

      2. This is why I don’t have a handgun. Too many rules.

I’d totally use it to scratch my ass and wind up a bloody mess.

  2. That’s inexcusable. Firing a gun in a courtroom should only occur in the most dire circumstances.

  3. . The Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources, said the bullet struck another deputy’s radio but no one was injured.

The radio reached for it’s waistband. 🙂

    1. I am certain the radio was black – – – – – – – – – –

  4. accidentally firing his or her weapon in a courtroom.

The word you are struggling for is negligently. And I thought the style guides had all been updated with a pronoun for just such an occurrence. Firing their weapon would make so much more sense.

    1. “style guides had all been updated”

      Charles Oliver has no style.

    2. Negligent discharges result in unwanted kids.

  5. sonofabitch! you shot me in the radio!

    1. This sparked a gun duel in which 17 innocent bystanders were wounded. Both cops went home safe.

    2. “Shoot them in the BroBox — it destroys their will to live”

  6. Seriously I don’t know why more people haven’t tried this, I work two shifts, 2 hours in the day and 2 in the evening…FLT And i get surly a check of $12600 what’s awesome is I m working from home so I get more time with my kids.Try it, you won’t regret it!………https://bit.ly/3Bf4vNG

  7. The unarmed radio might have been about to commit an insurrection. Shooting justified.

    1. The radio reached for it’s waistband.

  8. Don’t play with your Glock in public, that’s just gross.

    1. At least don’t short stroke it.

  9. Finding the right set of cooking gear to take on your motorcycle camping adventure can be a challenge. There are many alternatives available, from high tech light weight backpacking stoves to do-it-yourself alcohol stoves, titanium mess kits to eating out of a large soup can made into a cooking pot. In this article I will try to shed some light on the various commercially available stove alternatives and hopefully give you some ideas for you next big motorcycle camping adventure.

  10. Since it’s the main stream media, of course there’s no mention about the make or caliber of the firearm in question.
It would not surprise me if the current question is a Glock.
They are famous for negligent discharge usually injuring the owner in the leg, that’s the famous “Glock leg syndrome “.
These types of guns have no external thumb safety so as soon as anything touches the trigger, they go off.
Flicking off a safety takes about 1/10 of one second..
Yet it adds so much to safety when you have an external thumb safety.
The other problem with Glock and other similar pistols is the need to pull the trigger when you take the gun apart for cleaning.
This is design flaw that also results in many negligent discharges.
There are plenty of striker fired pistols that are available in models both with and without safeties that do not require pulling the trigger to field strip.
For instance the Sig 365 among many others.
Why people continue to buy guns with this serious design flaw is beyond me.
When I teach people about guns I make a huge point tell them buy one that does not require pulling the trigger to take it apart.
