Biden: It's Time for Afghanistan Forces 'To Fight for Themselves'

Plus: YouTube and radicalization, the infrastructure sham, and more...

"I do not regret my decision," President Joe Biden told reporters yesterday when asked about the U.S. finally withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

Some 3,000 U.S. troops were scheduled to leave the area on May 1, per Trump administration orders after negotiations with Taliban leaders. But in April, Biden inexplicably pushed the withdrawal date back to September 11, despite Taliban threats to increase violence if the troops stayed beyond May. Then, in July, he again moved the withdrawal deadline, now to August 31.

These days, Biden is still promising to stay the withdrawal course—despite recent Taliban takeovers of some Afghan cities and war hawk rumblings that it's our duty to stay.

"We spent over a trillion dollars, over 20 years. We trained and equipped with modern equipment over 300,000 Afghan forces," Biden said Tuesday. "They've got to fight for themselves."

Biden echoed Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, who said on Monday "it's their country to defend now; this is their struggle."

This is the right decision. As John Glaser and Alex Nowrasteh wrote for Reason back in April, keeping U.S. troops in Afghanistan isn't helping:

The fundamentals of the war have remained unchanged since nearly the beginning. The Taliban insurgency can and will outlast the U.S. occupation and the U.S.-backed regime in Kabul is too corrupt and weak to establish itself as a sovereign. … The fact that we have failed to defeat the Taliban or to effectively establish a new government after almost 20 years of trying strongly suggests it is an unachievable mission and, far from a reason to stay longer, is in fact a compelling reason to leave as soon as possible.

If the U.S. really wants to help the country's people (instead of just pursuing forever-war lust), it should open American borders to more Afghan immigrants.

"The first step is to restart the refugee program that was effectively canceled by President Donald Trump," wrote Glaser and Nowrasteh back in April. "Biden said he wants to welcome 125,000 refugees, but he hasn't taken the first step—authorizing an additional 62,500 this year—even though the presidential determination is sitting on his desk waiting for his signature. Biden could permit entry to 40,000 Afghans a year if he wanted to."

"A second step would be to allow Americans to privately sponsor refugees at their own expense," they add.

The Biden administration has started moving to welcome more refugees, though it's been ridiculously slow moving and narrowly tailored.

The State Department finally announced earlier this month that it would allow more Afghan refugees, but only those who were associated with the U.S. government. "This designation expands the opportunity to permanently resettle in the United States to many thousands of Afghans and their immediate family members who may be at risk due to their U.S. affiliation but who are not eligible for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV)," the Department said.

And "the program will not offer evacuation flights for these Afghan refugees, who would have to find a way to leave the country on their own," NBC reported on August 2.

The infrastructure bill passed the U.S. Senate yesterday, promising $1.2 trillion in new spending if it goes on to pass the House. Peter Suderman explains why it's "a sham"—and not only that. "It's a sham that sets up a much bigger round of explicitly partisan spending later in the year," he points out:

In a climactic vote this afternoon, 19 Senate Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–Ky.), signed onto the bill, which calls for $550 billion in new spending as part of more than $1 trillion in funding for roads, bridges, waterways, and broadband. The bill also includes essential infrastructure provisions like, er, requiring unproven new drunk-driving-prevention technology on cars, a vaping ban on Amtrak, and new reporting requirements for cryptocurrency.

The Republicans repeatedly claimed that the spending would be fully paid for, despite plenty of reasons to suspect that it won't be. As Reason's Eric Boehm reported, the Congressional Budget Office, Congress' nonpartisan scorekeeper, estimates that the bill would add at least $256 billion to the deficit, and probably more like $400 billion. Nineteen Republicans voted for it anyway.

The same Republicans also claim that while they support the infrastructure spending, they are deeply opposed to the rest of the Democratic agenda, which is being moved separately as part of a $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package that Democrats plan to pass on a party line.

You might think of the budget resolution as the "everything else bill." It funds the bulk of President Joe Biden's agenda that is not physical infrastructure.

I was blown away by the two guys kissing on TV to advertise HIV drugs. That was surprising to me.

I felt badly that my first thought was, Woke means you Choke (looking at you Rapinhoe), when I heard about the womens soccer team. Then I heard them talk, blaming everyone but themselves, and did not have anymore regrets.

To me, we cannot confer legitimacy to the communists of China.

        1. mad.casual   4 years ago

          That was surprising to me.

Saw that before elsewhere. It was disgusting. Not because homosexuality is disgusting, but because for decades, ED and matchmaking commercials avoided (and still do) showing people kissing (even, notably, putting them in separate bathtubs) but when it comes to the spread of HIV suddenly we can show people getting intimate.

More surprising to me was that the bronze medal team in Women's soccer had a 2-2-2 (3-2-1) record, the silver medal team had a 2-0-4 (3-1-2), record. Admittedly, I don't watch a lot of soccer and maybe that's how it is (seemingly would be) across the board with smaller sports/leagues and games that can end in a tie, but it seems like if you're going to give medals to teams that only win 50% of their games, you might as well give medals to everyone or just not hold the games/event at all.

          1. mad.casual   4 years ago

Again, I don't want to confer legitimacy to Communist China to begin with. Combine that with supporting preachy, whiny, medal-winning teams with a 50/50 record? Fuck no.

          2. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

Showing adult male homosexuality will never really work no matter how hard you normalize and force it. There's a biological revulsion in most men that can be suppressed but never overcome. It's not the male equivalent of girl on girl, it's its antithesis.

In any previous human society that had normalized male homosexuality, it was always pederasty with feminized boys and twinks. Never bear on bear.

            1. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

No arguing on your personal tastes, but the army of Sparta encouraged homosexuality for group cohesion and all soldiers were roughly in the same adult age range and pretty burly to boot.

And 300 of them managed to stave off the entire Persian Empire at Thermopolae. Various units of the Continental Army during The Revolution took inspiration from this battle and held banners with Spartan helmets and King Leonidas' famous slogan "MOLON LABE!" ("Come And Take It!")

Again, no arguing on tastes, but all this strikes this freedom-lover as exquistely beautiful! So if that's what they want, I say kiss away, you big libertarian lugs!

              1. mad.casual   4 years ago

the army of Sparta encouraged homosexuality for group cohesion and all soldiers were roughly in the same adult age range and pretty burly to boot

Your account/assessment is both inconsistent with Spartan law (males over the age of 30 were punished for being unwed and/or producing no children) and less reliably accurate than Xenophon's, who contrasted the Spartan army's preference for character-based platonic relationships with Greece's preference with physical ones (a debate that was in Greece itself, contentious).

Again, I don't exactly have a problem with homosexuality, it's the between patently false and speculative revisionist history in support of it that really nauseates me.

                1. criticaljeff racial theorist   4 years ago

Sparta was actually pretty down on homosexuality in general, even boy-fucking which was Athens' deal.

There’s a biological revulsion in most men that can be suppressed but never overcome.

I can, somewhat less than anecdotally, confirm that it's not just men. Informal polling indicates that women don't like to watch men kissing other men in any sexual context and more concrete and sophisticated studies indicate that when watching porn, women of all stripes watch porn to perceive themselves as the women (as opposed to men who are largely there to see naked ladies). Straight men don't like it and all kinds of women, at best, don't care for it.

              1. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

Try as people may, Rule 34 is not to be denied.

It's eight words long and you can't even understand it. "It exists" makes no assertions to its popularity or wider acceptance, biological or otherwise, much less the implications of associating it with any given cause statement or policy. Tentacle porn exists, that doesn't mean women really want to be penetrated by tentacles or that portraying women getting penetrated by tentacles is a great way to advertise calamari.

It's getting hard to tell if you're always this retarded or you're choosing to be so in this specific case.

With his signature snark, my least favorite journalist Glenn Greenwald manages to express why AOC is so awesome.

AOC is making more history as the first-ever radical, subversive threat to bipartisan consensus, two-party rule, corporatism, militarism, and the capitalist system to be celebrated with prime-time CNN specials and Vanity Fair covers: an exciting mark of progress.

He's actually correct. AOC — like most American "socialists" — exists to give voters a pretense of rebellion as they obediently line up behind Wall-Street-funded, billionaire-approved establishment Democrats like Joe Biden.

It has often been suggested that Republicans are better at overseeing the economy than Democrats. However, an analysis of economic performance since World War II under Democratic versus Republican presidents shows that claims that Republicans are better at managing the economy are simply not true. While the reasons are neither fully understood nor completely attributable to policy choices, data show that the economy has performed much better during Democratic administrations. Economic growth, job creation and industrial production have all been stronger.

In fact, a recent paper by economists Alan Blinder and Mark Watson states: “The superiority of economic performance under Democrats rather than Republicans is nearly ubiquitous; it holds almost regardless of how you define success.” Fact-checking groups have investigated similar statements and have found time and time again that they are true. Moreover, past research shows that stock market returns are also higher under Democrats.

Still, figures like Edward Snowden, Tom Drake, Chelsea Manning, John Kiriakou and a host of other whistleblowers loom large today above a world full of mostly sycophantic, cowardly and selfish adherents to the "rules."-Such truth tellers actually better represent the traditional nonconformist American ideal than any of their rule-of-the-road, stick-to-the-script fellow citizens.

I wasn't speaking to his oath (cost) but the value (benefit) or definition of calling him a whistleblower. When everything is quiet and you blow a whistle to draw everyone's attention to something that should be disquieting, you're a whistleblower. When you wade into a war zone and all sorts of air horns, alarm bells, sirens are going off, people are dying, and shit is exploding around you and blow a whistle, you aren't a whistleblower, you're somewhere between an attention whore and a plain old fucking moron.

  32. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

"I do not regret my decision," President Joe Biden told reporters yesterday when asked about the U.S. finally withdrawing troops from Afghanistan."

This is like Bill Clinton taking credit for NAFTA and GATT--only worse.

"Facing collapse of Afghan peace talks before they even start, the Trump administration has threatened to withhold up to $2 billion in aid unless President Ashraf Ghani and his main rival put aside their political differences and open negotiations with the Taliban.

Rebuking the Afghan officials as “irresponsible” and dishonorable, Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo publicly warned that U.S. aid to the central government could be slashed after his emergency visit to Kabul on Monday failed to resolve the dispute between Ghani and his former coalition partner, Abdullah Abdullah.

“Because this leadership failure poses a direct threat to U.S. national interests, effective immediately, the U.S. government will initiate a review of the scope of our cooperation with Afghanistan,” Pompeo said.

The threat was the sharpest sign yet that the Trump administration is distancing itself from its Afghan ally and moving closer to the Taliban. The longtime U.S. adversary has in effect become a wary partner as President Trump seeks to withdraw thousands of American troops before the November election and end America’s longest war.

----Los Angeles Times, March 24, 2020

    https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-03-24/us-afghanistan-taliban-peace-talks

Biden decided not to screw up what Trump had done--once Trump had done all the heavy lifting. Trump negotiated a full withdrawal agreement with the Taliban--something Biden would never have done--and signed it on February 29, 2020, bringing an end to hostilities between the United States and the Taliban.

When the U.S. backed government in Kabul balked at naming a delegation to negotiate its own peace agreement with the Taliban or release the Taliban prisoners they were still holding, Trump sent Pompeo to sort it out--and threatened to withhold U.S. aid to the U.S. backed government in Kabul. The Kabul government subsequently released the thousands of Taliban prisoners they were holding and named a delegation to negotiate peace with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar. The Kabul government then stalled for time in the hope that Trump would lose the election in 2020--because they assumed Biden wouldn't withdraw.

    1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

The Biden campaign criticized the peace agreement Trump signed with the Taliban on social justice grounds--for failing to protect the rights of women. If Biden won't withdraw from Afghanistan until the fundamentalists who run the Taliban embrace his progressive ideas about feminism, the Kabul government reasoned, then Joe Biden will never withdraw from Afghanistan. Once it became clear that the Taliban would restart hostilities with the United States if Biden failed to withdraw before May 1, 2021, as the Trump agreement stipulated, Biden decided to not go back to war with the Taliban.

There were no American casualties from the day Trump signed the agreement with the Taliban on February 29, 2020, and Biden deserves credit for not restarting the war--I suppose. Biden does not deserve credit for deciding to negotiate a peace agreement with the Taliban; Biden does not deserve credit for signing the peace deal with the Taliban; and Biden does not deserve credit for holding the Kabul government's feet to the fire until they released all the prisoners they were holding as required by the peace agreement. Biden never would have done any of those things, because of the political risks, and he criticized the agreement.

Biden could have screwed it up. He's basically accepting a participation trophy for being on the championship little league team--even though he never had an at-bat and never made it onto the field. When Biden was elected, all indications were that he was planning to cancel the win and make us all keep playing until the other team finally decided to let the girl on our team hit a grand slam. To the extent that Biden decided not to screw the pooch after all, he deserves credit for that. Personally, I wouldn't give Biden or anyone else a trophy for unexpectedly NOT screwing the pooch.

        (posted wrong place below)

        1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

Most countries are like that, which is why the U.N. is such a joke. People look at it as if it were a representative body, but the regimes in most countries are necessarily representative of the people in those countries. Even in a democratic country like Mexico, if the local police and the governor of the state don't like what the national legislature and the president are doing, they often just ignore it. The United States and Europe are probably unusual in that the government generally can implement the policies it enacts. Colombia was like that, too. The government controlled a handful of cities, and that was it. The rest of it was controlled by forces beyond the government's control.

If you look at political maps of the ancient world or colonial America, they give a distorted picture in that they may show this area controlled by Rome, that part controlled by the Parthians, and the rest of it blank. In colonial America, you get some areas marked English, some French, some Spanish, and the rest of it is blank. There are actually millions of people in those blank areas who have been living there for thousands of years.

It's the same way with modern political maps of the globe. Much of the area of Indonesia, Nigeria, and Peru may not be under the control of the government. Pakistan is like that. The government controls Karachi. The areas in the north and along the border with Afghanistan haven't been under the control of the Karachi government for a long time.

Trump wanted to give the Kabul government a fighting chance at not having a bloodbath, and so he gave them an opportunity to negotiate an agreement with the Taliban. It was like a golden parachute being negotiated for a CEO who's company is being taken over in a corporate merger. The Kabul government could have made things hard for the merger to happen, and he wanted them to cooperate with the merger--since we were selling the Kabul government short.

          They blew the negotiation.

    1. mad.casual   4 years ago

Didn’t know that push-button switchblades were legal now.

"Legal" is the better term. In many places the legality of the knife is as much dependent on the manner of carry as the mechanical function. Freddie Gray's knife was completely "legal". Even if it had been a switchblade, as long as some part of it was showing, it would've been "legal". In IL, switchblades are still illegal unless you have a FOID card.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Still can't legally carry them across state lines, and some states have maximum blade length. But shit I just bought a push-button switchblade and I think that's cool.

        1. mad.casual   4 years ago

Several widely-sold brand name knife and toolmakers, for years if not decades, have made standard folding knifes that, with less than a quarter screw turn, effectively become gravity knives. Though "illegal", I've carried one for years (I have a FOID, but I carried it before it was "legal" with a FOID) and never had a problem.

I'd make a comment about your ability to enjoy the freedom to own a switchblade being dependent on other peoples' lower cultural aversion to various forms of risk but I wouldn't want you feeling like you just bought in to the company of people who want Grandmas to die. So, enjoy your switchblade.

As a teen reading about weapons in things like Colby Books and Soldier of Fortune Magazine, I used to love the idea of a switchblade. I understand the allure. It has the seeming supernatural quality of coming out of nowhere.

Now that I'm older, wiser, more experienced, and have "given up foolish things," I say "Meh!"

Just oil up the swivel of a standard lockblade, hold the the back of the blade, and flick your wrist forward and you get the same effect as a switchblade. Same with a butterfly knife but you hold one end of the handle.

And you don't have to say "Big Brother May I?" to own a lockblade or butterfly knife (though stores now ask if you are age 16 or 18, depending on jurisdiction. Hell, what's up with that? I had a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife and a deerbone-handled mini Buck Knife at age 9 and never harmed myself or anyone else with them.)

      1. mad.casual   4 years ago

It has the seeming supernatural quality of coming out of nowhere.

As a teen bailing straw with gloves on, holding a line or other object, or needing to get my knife out repeatedly or frequently, I loved the idea of a switchblade or gravity pocket knife. It has the actual natural quality of being opened one-handed, in a single motion, without having to take your gloves off.

Driving the news: The study, conducted by nference and the Mayo Clinic, compared the effectiveness of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the Mayo Clinic Health System over time from January to July.

Overall, it found that the Moderna vaccine was 86% effective against infection over the study period, and Pfizer's was 76%. Moderna's vaccine was 92% effective against hospitalization and Pfizer's was 85%.
But the vaccines' effectiveness against infection dropped sharply in July, when the Delta variant's prevalence in Minnesota had risen to over 70%.
Moderna was 76% effective against infection, and Pfizer was only 42% effective.
The study found similar results in other states. For example, in Florida, the risk of infection in July for people fully vaccinated with Moderna was about 60% lower than for people fully vaccinated with Pfizer.

    1. mad.casual   4 years ago

Oh, huh, it's almost like with a 95% effective vaccine and the inviolate law of herd immunity the chances of 800 people, 70+% of whom were vaccinated, turning up with infections, was a statistical impossiblity.

Pretty amazing that after 20 years and literally trillions of dollars (with a T), The Afghan government is unable to defend the major cities of Afghanistan.
The government has armored Humvees, tanks, artillery pieces, and lots of helicopters and ground attack airplanes.
The Afghan government has basically unlimited amounts of ammunition, courtesy of the American taxpayer.
Include American air power in addition to the government air force.
The Taliban don’t have a single tank, artillery piece, helicopter or airplane.
Yet the Taliban is about to conquer the entire country.
Our American Generals should be ashamed of themselves that they could not put together an effective Army after all that time and money.
Better to have just given the money to local warlords who would have defended their own local area
