'Hero Pay' for Grocery Workers Is Terrible for Grocery Workers
Laws which mandate big wage increases for workers during the pandemic are leaving store closures in their wake.

"Hero pay" laws, which require big wage increases for grocery store workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, are sweeping the West Coast. Store closures, unemployment, and lawsuits have followed in their wake.
The first of these laws, passed in late January by the Long Beach, California, City Council, mandated that grocery workers at large stores get a $4-an-hour pay raise for the duration of the pandemic. By early February, Kroger announced it was shutting down two stores in Long Beach.
The locations had already been underperforming, the company said, but the new pay hike meant they were now unsustainable. It was the same story in Seattle and Los Angeles: In response to "hero pay" laws, Kroger said it would close three stores in each city.
Many independent stores that remain open say these policies have pushed them deep into the red. One analysis by Capitol Matrix Consulting (and commissioned by the California Grocers Association) found the laws have increased labor costs by an average of 30 percent.
Grocery store associations in California and Washington are suing every city that requires "hero pay." They argue that such mandates are preempted by federal labor law and violate the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause.
The grocery store unions that push these laws and the politicians who pass them scoff at store owners' arguments. Grocery store profits, they note, are way up during the pandemic. They argue that the store closures are merely an intimidation tactic.
Grocery stores "absolutely should be paying this increase," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Kortez. "And if they shut down stores, it's just out of spite." It's a strange argument that companies would be greedy enough to resist giving affordable pay increases to their employees but not so greedy that they don't mind closing profitable stores just to make a point.
Even with record pandemic profits, grocery stores operate on very slim margins. Big, sudden increases in expenses have to be absorbed somewhere. Those stores with the least room to make up added costs are the most at risk of being shuttered.
Most supermarkets, of course, will survive, likely through a combination of price hikes, layoffs, and employee hour reductions. These consequences are a compressed version of what we'd expect from the much-discussed idea of raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour: pay raises for many workers, job losses for others, and higher prices and fewer options for consumers. Unlike with a minimum wage increase, however, the costs of "hero pay" laws are obvious, immediate, and visible to everyone.

That’s why we Koch / Reason libertarians have always demanded open borders â we want to import foreign-born laborers (especially from Mexico) who won’t expect something extra just for “working during a pandemic.”

This isnât about a $3/hour pay bump killing the Long Beach Krogers. Those stores were marginal for one reason: they were too close to Compton and other bad areas. And with the laws being as they are, people could walk into the store, steal whatever they could carry out, and be unmolested by the store employees or the law. And in that area, they did just that. You canât have a business if payment for services/goods is optional. Especially one that doesnât operate on large profit margins. So the executives used the wage hike as a handy excuse to close those troubled and money-losing stores which were mostly just providing the ghetto with free groceries.
youre a poor liar.
You said ” no it isnt” indicating paying more money in wages was not contributory to store closure due to finances and expenses then you changed topics like Lying Trolls do, and stated it was due to financial losses from another cause and all that based solely on your opinion.
The deliberate dishonest topic shift” Red Herring” marks you as a Liar.
Yeah!

I work in Long Beach, dick! You have no clue.
Lol may i say that i think he is doing this on purpose?
Location matters.
Some locations are bad, some become bad.
Most people are smart enough not to open most types of businesses in or around the hood. For obvious reasons.
You mean racism, right?
Exactly right! America is just brimming with people who are so racist that they happily turn away from a chance at big profits just so they can stick it to the black man.
Cranedoc – why do the execs need some contrived excuse to close underperforming stores? They can just close them at any time for any reason they want.
They were content keeping them open until recently and then they decided to close them. The only thing that changed was the law increasing their labor costs by 30% or whatever. The cause and effect couldnât be more clear.
Probably just the last straw.
They don’t need an excuse.
The stores were underperforming. The forced raise made them unprofitable.
That’s why they were shut down.
As a retail worker at a store in a city with per capita murders that compare with Chi-Town, I see great truth in what you say.
Retail workers don’t need “hero pay.” We need a government that isn’t scared to protect Life, Liberty, and Property, even if it has to set up a police precinct in every superstore and mall parking lot.
(Armed citizenry helps keep the worst thugs away too, but expecting them to process the arrested or run CSI labs would be a bit much, so we defer to the professionals here.)
If governments would simply do their legitimate job of protecting Life, Liberty, and Property, stores would not lose so much to looters and vandals. People would be less wont to show their ass in stores like barbarians, the customer experience in stores would be so much better.
Stores would attract more customers and business, more profits would result, then workers could get greater investment dividends, greater bonuses, and “hero pay” with every regular paycheck, not just during a pandemic.
CEOs also need to grow a spine and tell the public:
“Look, damnit! If you didn’t make it yourself, it came from a store! And if it came from a store, it came here on a truck! Hell, even if you did make it yourself, chances are the raw materials came from a store and came off a truck! Treat us and our employees with respect! It’s either us or you get your groceries and merchandise from the damn woods! Most of you wouldn’t make it in the woods, and in fact you would be the food! I’m looking at every one of you ‘mostly peaceful’ types out there! It’s either Free-Market Capitalism or Mowgli’s ‘Bear Necessities!’ The choice is yours!”

The grocery stores should just hire all women and then they’d only have to give them a $2.80 raise.
????
Damn you for not accepting my LOL emoji Reason!!!
The true minimum wage is, and always will be : $0.00/hr. (Or whatever your currency and time units are).
That is beyond the comprehension of democrats everywhere.
Why do grocery workers only deserve $4/hour in hero pay? Shouldn’t they be getting $400/hour? I mean, it’s really heroic and all.
$4.00 / hour seems pretty low for all the extreme danger grocery workers face. Every time I go to the store, itâs new people because everyone that worked there last week is dead.
$50 / hour seems better , or osha should close these dangerous hell holes to stop all the deaths.
Change my mind.
youre a pathological liar.
Theres no extreme danger
Lol.

Absolutely preposterous. Do you even listen to yourself? Nothing less than $100/hour will work to usher in our glorious Marxist utopia and cure all diseases forever.
You are right. I donât know what I was thinking. I should be more generous with other peoples money.
That day the USA turned communist and no reasonable person could logically deny it any longer.
Long Beach, California is not the entire USA.
no it isnt is the favorite baseless retort of a liar.
Prove it isnt.
Lol.
Is your schtick just calling everyone a liar? Is this the famous Liar Bot Iâve heard so much about?
Lol ok good one
âno it isnt is the favorite baseless retort of a liar.â <~~ THAT IS A LIE!! Just admit it, youâre part of The Conspiracy arenât you?!
Relax, buddy.
This was never about the workers.
What was it about then? The Long Beach City Council deliberately wanted to close grocery stores, particularly in the middle of a pandemic?
Interestingly, unions and workers are not identical entities.
Shameless virtue signalling after push back to the teacher bonuses they ready gave out.
You know all about virtue signaling.
Jeff, you always have been, and apparently will remain, an ignorant ass. This is a choice, not a fate. You can break free from it if you choose to.
Now. Ask yourself – if this was about the workers, why didn’t all the grocery stores WITH WORKERS doing the SAME JOBS share in this ‘hero pay’?
WHAT is the DIFFERENCE between the stores and companies that were supposed to pay this bonus money and the ones EXEMPTED? Why is there a difference at all? WHY?
The larger ones could presumably afford it while the smaller ones would be less likely to be able to afford it.
So, it wasn’t about the workers?
Once again; It was about how using Gov-Guns to *take* whatever other have is supposed to be deemed ‘good’… Armed robbery – the new ‘angel’ with dirty wings.

There is no economic problem that can’t be made far worse by ham-fisted price control stupidity.
-jcr
At least it’s not ‘impossible’ (non meat) ham-fisted . . .
https://www.theverge.com/2016/5/5/11592622/this-is-fine-meme-comic
True, but the pork producers’ association called and said you can’t call any stupidity “ham-fisted” unless you wrap it in actual bacon.
Bacon is not ham and pork butts are not (generally) from the butt. But they are from the butt-end of a ham hock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BZDZyRaGa8
I think you missed the joke.
Can we say something is “larded with fat,” even if the fat is not from pork?
What especially irked me about their hero pay pronouncements and mandates was forcing the businesses to pay more; if they truly deserved community thanks, why not pay it from community taxes?
Same with cops who destroy a house when chasing a bad guy. They refuse to pay, and the courts back them up, as the property wasn’t “taken”, and the police action was a community service. Well hell, if it was truly a community action, then the community should pay.
They have no problem spending taxes on decidedly non-community actions and projects. Why the sudden reticence for truly community benefits?
What irked me is how they carved out the exemptions to the rules so that local small-business grocers didn’t have to pay their workers anything extra; it was only the big chains that had to comply. So, were they trying to give an advantage to the small guys by letting them pay less, or were they trying to convince all the small grocer’s employees to quit Jim’s Market and work for Kroger instead?
Did they have any idea what they were doing?
Did they care?
“…Did they have any idea what they were doing?
Did they care?”
They care about votes and posturing, and the local news outlets framed the issue to deliver both.
Grocery stores “absolutely should be paying this increase,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Kortez. “And if they shut down stores, it’s just out of spite.”
Kortez, like his komrades, reveals not so much his ignorance of market economics as his financially retarded perception of how prices, pay, and other business decisions are made: purely on partisan and political criteria. I am sure people like him really have no clue (or desire) about how costs, benefits, and other factors determine business and consumer operations and decisions. For the Kortezes of the world, “pay” and “price” are just arbitrary numbers, to be determined by political power, and have absolutely no connection.
There is a part of me that democrats are doing this merely to shift the outrage of the bonuses abd payments to teachers by focusing on grocery workers. It is strange to me that those multi thousand dollar bonuses have gotten almost no coverage, paid by tax payers. Instead the media have suddenly launched on to the min wage workers and the stores that can not afford the labor cost increases. It is a shift to blame capitalism instead of teachers.
Hey JesseAz:
An idea: Why not give them that raise, but have the State take it out of the pay of the teachers who are NOT working at all, and are at zero risk, yet receiving their full salaries. I might be able to get behind THAT kind of “redistribution” of income.
While the irony is amusing, I am for simply ending teachers unions and state collusion largesse. That would do far more damage to these entities that are corrupt. Money follows kids. Let market forces work.
Yeppers to that!
Best to just eliminate all unions from representing anyone receiving any portion of tax funds, directly or indirectly.
Itâs corrupt to allow a system where those who benefit from public money can vote for the elected government that provides that money.
A person who works for the government still has the right to collectively bargain. And perhaps that is unfortunate.
However, we could do a lot more to de-fang public unions — by eliminating the virtual monopoly the government has on education. If we want the government to fund education — fund the kids. The same tactic could be used to eliminate, or at least severely reduce, the influence of government in many segments of society.
In many large towns and counties, municipal workers are basically hiring their bosses. Then their unions contribute to electing those bosses, who raise their pay, which fund the unions.
Itâs very corrupt.
The only solution is to eliminate all public sector unions.
Well, that would be nice, but it might require a “carve-out” of the first amendment. I am pretty sure that is not worth it.
Why not just eliminate the jobs?
A person who works for the government still has the right to collectively bargain.
That doesn’t have to continue to be the case. As tax payers are ultimately the bosses of government employees, I see zero reason why laws couldn’t be passed to make this kind of union illegal.
As regardless of what leftists like Obama & Biden might have others think, the “right to unionize” is not enshrined in the Constitution. And no one is stopping these individuals from freedom of association as they can always form informal voting groups if they like, they just cannot do so through a union.
Though I’m not a lawyer and haven’t even played one on TV, so maybe I’m wrong….
Sort of like the minimum wage hike efforts. We demanded that stores pay unskilled workers 30K a year (15 bucks an hour). They’re only shutting down out of spite! And the now unemployed workers are better off anyway.
We don’t need hero pay anymore. We’ve ended the harm of mean tweets.

The most important article of the decade. Read it and you will understand the left since Lenin’s days, until today. You will learn why you shouldn’t expect them to relent in their quest for power by any means necessary, or negotiate in good faith. [Link]
“As we approach the 150th anniversary of Leninâs birth, understanding him grows ever more important. Despite the fall of the Soviet Union, Leninist ways of thinking continue to spread, especially among Western radicals who have never read a word of Lenin. This essay is not just about Lenin, and not just Leninism, the official philosophy of the ussr, but also the very style of thought that Lenin pioneered. Call it Leninthink.
Lenin did more than anyone else to shape the last hundred years. He invented a form of government we have come to call totalitarian, which rejected in principle the idea of any private sphere outside of state control. To establish this power, he invented the one-party state, a term that would previously have seemed self-contradictory since a party was, by definition, a part. An admirer of the French Jacobins, Lenin believed that state power had to be based on sheer terror, and so he also created the terrorist state.
Stephen Pinker has recently argued that the world has been getting less bloodthirsty. The Mongols, after all, destroyed entire cities. But the Mongols murdered other people; what is new, and uniquely horrible about the Soviets and their successors, is that they directed their fury at their own people. The Russian empire lost more people in World War I than any other country, but still more died under Lenin. His war against the peasants, for instance, took more lives than combat between Reds and Whites.”
Tried all 3 tricks i know to trick the link eater filter. Wow. They really don’t want that link.

Not familiar with several thousand years of history, are you. Brutal, oppressive, monolithic governments have been the rule throughout history, not the exception.
You missed the point, and the leninists thank you for doing so.
Corn, soybeans, and wheat have been trading at multi-year highs, with corn having risen from around $3.80 per bushel in January 2020 to approximately $6.75 now. Chicken wings are at all-time record highs. It is getting more expensive to eat.
Copper prices have risen to an all-time high. Steel, too, recently traded at prices 35% above the previous all-time set in 2008. Perhaps most famously, the price of lumber has nearly quadrupled since the beginning of 2020 and has nearly doubled just since January.
Naturally, with raw materials prices soaring, prices of manufactured goods are jumping, too. That is especially noticeable in the housing market, where the median price of existing homes rose to $329,100 in Marchâa whopping 17.2% increase from a year earlier.
The cost of driving is soaring, too. According to J.D. Power, cited in The Wall Street Journal, the average used car price has risen 16.7% and new car prices have risen 9.6% since January.

Man. That transitory inflation isn’t that big of a deal. Glad we could finally start upping regulations again. I’m sure Boehm will be right on it. He wrote doze s of stories on trade wars the last few years, all while ignoring inflation (the absence of significant increases)… Will he examine it now?
10 year Treasuries still show very little expectation of inflation at 1.6%. A reopening bump in a few commodities is to be expected.

By the way, why hunters laptop? You’d actually learn Joe has been corrupt for a decade. Something you also deny.

Sweet, sweet, hypocrisy.
They don’t know i do that as a reflection of their posts the last 4 years.
JesseAz is a one-trick-pony who accuses people of things they never said, did or thought, and no matter how they respond he’ll keep up the accusations.
That’s literally all he does.
Best on Mute. Unread and ignored.
They aren’t. I just use the terms on those who called others trump cultists for 4 years. In reality they are cultists of the state.
But SPB is special in that he denies Biden is even corrupt.
The economy is clipping along at 6% GDP growth this year after a pussy-ass weak 1% during Trump’s four (4) years.
Of course some commodity prices are rising due to increased demand.
Learn something about supply/demand sometime, you trumptard.
And this is the idiocy you excuse. That 6% growth started at the end of last year as the economy opened up in red states and now as blue states open again. You are completely ignorant to actual causes of economic changes, using your preferred political issue of the day as the narrative.
he’s not being clever; he’s too dumb to understand, and too stupid to learn to be otherwise.
“It is amazing watching biden cultists…”
Turd is certainly a cultist, but let’s be careful here.
His entire opus at Reason needs no further explanation beyond abysmal stupidity.
He’s not being clever when he cherry-picks data; he simply lacks the mental abilities to *UNDERSTAND* that he’s doing so.
See turd 11:21 for a demonstration of STUPID applied to data.
“Turd 11:21” was cancelled out of the bible for being too revealing.
Lumber prices are up 2.5x YTD.
Oil and copper are up 35% and 42% respectively.
âReopening bumpâ. Lol. The feds and the fed are drowning us in liquidity, and the chickens are headed home to roost. I guess they feel like they have to in order to offset Bidenâs anti-growth agenda.
Not all price rises are inflation. For example: all the examples you gave. These are real price changes that are occurring due to low supply and high demand. Inflation is price increasing due to broad currency devaluation. Inflation is happening, but not at any rate close to 4x multiples, which would be considered hyper inflation if true.
Oh, I didn’t notice the excess spending the last year. I get it, you’ve bought into the transitory inflation narrative people like Krugman are pushing. I’m not shocked by that fact. The fact is our currency has already devalued from paying people not to work. We see this in crypto currency and current inflationary statistics. You are welcome to deny this as much as you want since you don’t want to admit you were wrong for pining for a disastrous democrat. But that’s just rationalization.
This reminds me of this recent article I read where, when the gas price spiked to above $3/gal because of the pipeline shutdown, the Fox News anchors – the news anchors, not the opinion people – were deliberately making comparisons to the 1970s and the oil shortages then. The narrative has been set – Joe Biden is the harbinger of the 1970’s all over again. That is the reality that Team Red is going to live in until Election Day 2024. Every fact that emerges from now until then will be viewed through that lens.
What people don’t realize is that Joe Biden doesn’t want 1970s gas prices to come back. He has a bitchen Camero in his driveway that drinks gasoline like a mofo.
a pipeline shutdown does not change the value of a commodity already produced, so its a lie that shutdown causes price rise.
Its thivery of Retailers projecting how long something will not be available, and trying to extort money to cover loss of income from a period where they have no sales.
AFIC, It should be prosecuted under anti Trust or gouging laws.
Anytime the demand for something exceeds the available supply (operative term here,) there is always a jump in prices.
Also, consider this: during shortages or disruptions, retailers have the added expense of paying employees to keep lines in order and the expense of replacing vandalized and looted items from the angry rabble such as yourself, along with added insurance premiums that result.
And if you try imposing “price gouging” laws against that, this causes a run on the product until it runs out and nobody gets the product at all. Try to run your vehicle off of your vitriol, grumpy.
a pipeline shutdown does not change the value of a commodity already produced…
Umm….that’s a lie. I guess you fail to understand that commodity prices, like stock prices reflect what the market thinks future prices will be.
So shutting down something which isn’t yet finished, but when finished would reduce the price of a given commodity will raise that commodity’s price, because the existence of that thing they were working to finish was already cooked into the current price.
Lol. They were mocmong your side jeff. You take it as a personal attack while denying being on team blue.
Câmon Jeff. All of Bidenâs energy policies work toward higher oil (and therefore gasoline) prices. Makes their War on the Climate easier if the drive demand down as much as they can.
Yet at $65/bbl crude oil is less than half the price of its 2008 peak of $142/bbl.
INFLATION!!!! DEFP!!! HUNTER BIDENS LAPTOP! BENGHAZI!!! ARGLE BARGLE!!!
Iâm a petroleum engineer with 35 years of experience that spent the last 25 or so as an officer at a couple of public companies. I donât need you to tell me about the fucking oil market.
Funny that you picked the peak of a financial bubble as your inflation starting point. And something happened after 2008 and before 2015 that changed the supply situation generationally. Got any clue what?
Hint: itâs something Biden and his crew would outlaw if they could. Which would make 2008!oil prices seem dirt cheap.
And you also ignored all the other commodities. Try harder.
No one is going to ban fracking.
And so you know the wingnut claim that killing the Keystone XL had no effect on oil prices.
I don’t believe conservatives and their stupid claims since their track records are so poor. And I say that as a shareholder of Antero Resources. I would like to see natural gas above three bucks.
They canât ban it, although they would if they could.
So instead theyâre gonna slow it down best they can. No more leasing. No more permits, or at least indefinite delays. Try to shut down new (and some existing) pipelines so as to limit outlets for new production. Not Keystone, but the others.
Expectation of future supply (and demand) are contributors to current and future prices. The hostility of Biden et al to oil supply has contributed some to the increase in prices, and will do so more over the next 3+ years.
Wingnuts said that about Obama and watched while production and leasing increased every year of his two terms.
As you know, production kept increasing until the oil glut cratered prices.
I looked at the federal leases during the Obama years. He was very friendly to natural gas as a bridge fuel.
Coal is the real enemy. It is filthy. Good riddance coal. The electric energy companies don’t want your shit either.
Now the states are a different issue.
Except for the sheer number of Democrats who campaigned on the promise of banning fracking. Sorry, but while you might expect your politicians to lie through their teeth, I at least react to their statements. Obama campaigned against fracking while doing nothing of substance. However, while Biden might be spineless, Harris is not. I trust her to follow her campaign pledges.
So the oil embargoes of the 1970s didnât cause any inflation? Really?
Sure 1971-72 and the first round of oil embargos. Was that Jimmy Carter’s fault too?
What the fuck are you talking about? To begin with, it was 1973. Punishment for our support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War.
The second one was Iran falling apart during their revolution.
Why the fuck are you bringing politics into this? I was responding to the guy that said that price increases are not inflation.
Itâs best to just mute Plug.
NO price rises are inflation.
The two are not related except by myth.
Get a Macro Economics book.
NO price rises are inflation.
That is just plain stupid.
I’m not saying any current US price increases are due to inflation, but historically some price increases were due to inflation and to claim otherwise is just stupid.
& if it’s in a macroEcon book you have purchased, get your money back, but I suggest to you it is not there and you are trying to read between the lines and failing miserably at it.
Supply shortages cause price hikes, of course.
But dumping an extra 2, 4 or 6 trillion on the economy is like pouring lighter fluid on a fire.
lie. price increases are not inflation.

Good thing you supported the guy that wants to keep us mired in Middle East conflicts.
Good thing you voted against the guy who engineered 3 ME peace deals, and for the guy who has been wrong on every foreign policy issue in his entire career.
Just need to read the entire cluster fuck of a story here about a school board berating a woman for ot wearing a mask, despite a medical issue, canceling the meeting, asking them to leave, restarting the meeting after they left, then threatening calling cops on the women.

And now because of the trespassing citation, the single mothers were instructed that they could be arrested and cited for burglary if they show up on district property to pick up their children from school or go to their childrenâs athletic events. Mcilwain would risk arrest going to her childrenâs graduations from kindergarten and fifth grade.
Sounds like a case for IJ.

Tesla Will Have to Ship Its Texas-Built Cars Out of State to Sell Back to Residents

Texas has always hated free market capitalism. They lard up the state with regulations to protect cronies.
Latest economic data shows red states crushing blue states.
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/latest-economic-data-show-red-states-crushing-blue-states-and-heres-why
You don’t have to be Milton Friedman to understand the various reasons shitty blue state policies are hurting them so much, which is why California just lost population for the first time ever.
He credits biden, see his post above.
blue = welfare juat like in this story.
All this Sham economics are part of a massive welfare bailout. And vote buying
Yes but they must be honest and educated to read Friedman…
that leaves Blue Staters out..their best is being hypnotized by “See B.S.”
Tesla isn’t free market by any definition.
Tesla is “Government chosen winners…”
Elections have consequences. That’s true for local, state, and federal elections. Either voters sooner or later make the connection between voting for progressives and the resulting disasters or this country is doomed.
I won’t hold my breath. Even Reason writers like Britschgi don’t make libertarian arguments (“hero pay is an infringement on liberty”) and instead make progressive arguments (“hero pay has bad consequences”). With people like that representing the libertarian and free market side of the argument, it’s no surprise that the US is rushing towards socialism/fascism.
libertarians are NOT Free Market advocates.
I bought their Official published platform documents and read them.
They are Liberal Democrats advocating Givernment Welfare thru giant infrastructure programs instead of Prog demoCrap individual welfare. ( water pipeline for example- stupidity…)
Its the same Vote Buying either way.
The word “libertarian” refers to an ideology, not a party with a platform. The “libertarian” ideology includes strong support for free markets.
The word “Libertarian” refers to a party with a platform, and one that, as you correctly observe, fails to live up to “libertarian” ideology.
Not everybody who claims to believe in “libertarianism” actually does; just look at the Reason writers.
I doubt most libertarians are Libertarians.
Lol i’m Schrödinger’s Llibertarian.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!?!?
Yes and no.
Unfortunately, most people who call themselves “libertarians” aren’t libertarians either.
Most “libertarians” seem to think (incorrectly) that libertarianism amounts to maximizing individual choices.
Seems that a significant number of people on this board think libertarian means leftist because it doesn’t mean Trump.
Military are Heros. Left Wing media meme.
So ” grocery store workers are heros” is STOLEN VALOR WHICH IS A CRIME.

If actual evidence came to light that reverses the outcome of the election and Congress voted to undo the certification of the election, what do you think should happen? Shouldn’t Biden have to leave the WH?
If Hitler rose from the grave and successfully invaded Britain, what should Parliament do? Should Boris Johnson resign?
If Hitler rose from the grave and re-entered politics leftists everywhere like you would be big fans of his.
The only problem with that is that the evidence doesn’t exist except in the fevered minds of diehard Trumptards. If actual evidence did exist someone would have found it by now.
There is circular reasoning going on here. People say “oh, a careful audit doesn’t make sense because Biden is irreversibly president, so why subject the country to it” and then at the same time “nothing has been found, so everything must be legit”.
Then people confuse absence of evidence with evidence of absence. The fact is that US elections are effectively unauditable, and that is a problem in itself.
Arizona is the first time auditors are seriously trying to match up paper ballots with recorded data. Careful forensic examinations can take years. And how that affects Biden or Trump simply isn’t a consideration. And there are three conclusions: (1) demonstrably no significant fraud, (2) demonstrably substantial fraud, and (3) we couldn’t find any fraud. Here, (3) is even worse than (1) and (2).
Personally I figure too many people would need to be involved to not have someone come forward with something credible by now.
No one needs to come forward, the whole plot was quite public.
Because of the pandemic, mail-in ballot rules were relaxed, making it easier to harvest them. Ballots were mailed to everyone, not just those who requested them. Twice as many to harvest. In some cases even the signature matching rules were relaxed or the envelopes destroyed. Once the ballots are collected/harvested/generated, recounts don’t matter.
And it was all legal and above board, except maybe changing the rules by making an end run around the state legislatures. But that’s water under the bridge as they say.
So the Repubs are wisely trying to tighten up the rules to ensure better ballot integrity next time. For which they are being labeled racist, of course.
I’m all for genuine efforts to improve election procedures.
I don’t think it’s gone far enough in some areas: In my opinion, states should require open source vote scanning/tallying software.
But, as chemjeff points out, what is the legitimate, genuine goal of not sending out mail-in ballot applications, of limiting drop boxes for ballots?
Limiting drop boxes, I disagree with. However, Mail-In ballots are known to be a security risk. New Jersey had to completely redo a primary due to mass theft and falsification of mail-in ballots.
The outcome of the election could have been changed by a handful of people all acting independently. No conspiracy or “widespread” fraud was needed. That’s because ballots are handled in open boxes by individual officials, with no supervision or tracking, often away from observers and public view.
In other countries, ballots are on paper, and all ballot boxes are unsealed, counted, and then resealed by half a dozen people in full public view. That is how US election should work.
If a handful of people can rig an election, then what’s the point of having them?
Because not having them would be racist.
The election is over. Even the Arizona legislature says that the current questionable audit is only for purposes of improving future elections.
And the literal answer to your highly hypothetical question is that the Constitution totally bails on outlining any process for major fraud discovered well after the Presidential inauguration. So, I suppose the Supreme Court would end up ruling on what to do; it certainly wouldnât be Sidney Powellâs decision how it should be handled.

All the coroner said is that he was not directly killed by the rioters. Nobody has said it was non-related.
The deaths of Sicknick, Liebengood, and Smith are clearly _related_ to the Capitol riots.

_I_ say it was related. Because I am not a partisan hack, and I have common sense, and I can see plain truths.
“Nobody has said it was non-related.”

Wow, the bald faced liars posting here!

Except thatâs not a lie sarc. Sicknick wasnât killed by the rioters and Mike trying to say the three officers deaths are related to the riot IS partisan hackery.
“Unhide Username. Yep, JesseAz. Take it for granted that anything he says is a lie. Heâs best on Mute. That way youâre not tempted to respond to his attacks on things you never said, did or thought.”
Yep, a direct quotation, to this brain-damaged piece of lefty shit is a “lie”.
Of course the “hero pay” mandated by the state is a stupid idea. But all of the criticism here is missing the point of why this pay was enacted in the first place. It wasn’t some nefarious plan to close grocery stores or impose socialism. It was a recognition that low-wage workers often do thankless but very necessary jobs, and they are very often overlooked and ignored by society at large.
It reminds me of this Facebook discussion that I observed, regarding wearing masks and mask mandates – some were defending mask mandates, others were opposed to it – and another person, trying to offer a compromise, suggested “well, why can’t we have an hour or so in the grocery store devoted to people who don’t want to wear masks? That way if you don’t want to wear a mask you can go shopping then, and if you do want to wear a mask you can avoid that time.” This person was genuinely trying to find a reasonable compromise between the two sides. But of course this person was taking the workers for granted. The workers would have to put up with people spewing plague everywhere just so they could shop in a more convenient manner to them. And this sort of thing happens all the time. How many times did we see angry patrons yelling at low-wage employees about their mask policies, when those employees had zero power to do anything about it? Heck even before the pandemic, how many people would take out their frustrations at the minimum wage worker behind the counter who had little power to do anything about it?
It behooves all businesses to treat their employees fairly and justly, and it behooves all people to treat others respectfully and courteously. Too often those at the bottom of the economic ladder are shit upon by everyone else. That is the inspiration for these “hero pay” bills. We can oppose these ideas while still recognizing the basic human dignity of everyone and proposing an idea that will serve the same purpose, but without the government coercion.
How about (just spitballing here): A business that gives its employees a “pandemic bonus” receives a tax deduction proportional to the bonus *as a share of the employee’s compensation*. So if a worker who makes $10/hr gets a $1/hr bonus, that company gets a 10% tax deduction. But some CEO who makes $1,000,000 per year would have to get a $100,000 bonus to earn the same 10% tax deduction. Obviously it makes more economic sense to give the bonus to the low-wage employees rather than to the CEO. Something like that.

So angry and emotionally you know the fake reason you hate the gop instead of actually admitting you’re a leftist.
So, Jeff – the Long Beach pols believe that the workers at big chain grocery stores have to be treated with dignity and paid a fair wage? So, by inference they must believe that the workers at small, locally owned independent stores should be treated like subhuman dregs, right?
Thatâs the only explanation that fits the your interpretation. It couldnât be that hero pay renders marginal stores unprofitable.
It is a stupid solution to a real problem.
“…It was a recognition that low-wage workers often do thankless but very necessary jobs, and they are very often overlooked and ignored by society at large…”

O/T: Here’s the Team Red game plan for 2024.
https://theweek.com/articles/979505/republican-plot-steal-2024-election
Step 1: Manufacture massive doubt in the electoral system itself, by continuing to propagate The Big Lie.
Step 2: When 2024 rolls around, if Team Blue wins the requisite number of states to ensure an Electoral College victory based on the *popular vote*, generate enough doubt in the process so as to refuse to certify electors, have legislatures send slates of electors different than what the people chose, etc. – in effect, gum up the works so much so that the Twelfth Amendment is invoked.
Step 3: Because, as a result of the 2020 Census, a majority of the state delegations will be safely gerrymandered in favor of Team Red, then the Team Red candidate will win in 2024, regardless of what the popular vote was, or even regardless of what the Electoral College vote was.
Yet you still pretend you aren’t a leftist.
Why is voting such a difficult subject for wingnuts?
Because we got rid of poll taxes, literacy tests, Jim Crow laws etc and so the GOP just wants to make it as difficult as possible for people in cities to vote.
At their core, they don’t truly believe every citizen deserves a vote. Instead, it should be a privilege that should be earned. People fought and died for the right to vote, and if you don’t treat your vote reverentially, and with the respect that it deserves, then you dishonor their memory and should have your right to vote taken away from you. That’s the basic gist of it.
Or maybe voting should be a tiny bit difficult so that people who would never choose to vote, who are being encouraged to vote the Democrat party line by their favorite celebrities, say “Fuck it” and stay home.
Yes, I live in the small rural town of Dogdick, Georgia as I have said many times. I have never waited to vote as there are 16-20 vote machines here.
In Atlanta and the metro area people wait 5-6 hours to vote and there are very few machines to service millions of people. This is by design to limit urban votes. They just don’t want Atlanta votes to count -black, white, Latino, Asian or anyone.
Rednecks? COME ON AND VOTE FER TRUMP BOYS!
So you are accusing the Democrats in charge of Fulton county of deliberately buying too few voting machines in order to limit urban votes out of racist motives?
I know, right? Why don’t poor districts create money out of thin air in order to buy more voting machines?
Lol
“I know, right? Why donât poor districts create money out of thin air in order to buy more voting machines?”
Dishonest shit like this is the reason you’re held in such contempt, asshole.
Atlanta, with a rich tax base, a poor district? Who are you trying to fool?
Man if only Democrats, who run nearly every major city in the country, werenât such fucking racist pieces of shit, they might actually try to open more polling places so people wouldnât have to wait in line for 6 hours.
Literally every other modern democracy has strong voter ID laws. You prove who you are at the polls and then you vote. Once.
You don’t think that city people can get ID? Don’t they need it to get on a bus, or get a vaccine? What about banking or cashing a paycheck?
Shrike is a racist who doesnât think very highly of others.
You donât need an id for a vaccine at any chain drugstore.
You donât need id for a bus.
I agree with your premise, but those two examples are wrong.
While you don’t need an ID to get on a bus, you do need one to get a bus pass, at least the last time I had one. In fact, that was my first government-issued photo ID. You do need one for both planes and trains last I checked.
And I did need to show my license to get my COVID vaccine and as part of my check-in process for my doctor.
So Minadin’s not completely wrong.
Or getting a phone, except for a burner.
giving affordable pay increases to their employees but not so greedy that they don’t mind closing profitable stores just to make a point.
I think the counter-argument is that the grocery store chain as a whole is profitable, so they should just take the profits from the big central pot of money and subsidize (if need be) the unprofitable stores. Essentially, like back and enjoy it.
Subsiduzing failure is Left Wing Big Government tactics, not wise corporatemanagement.
O/T: Well well well. New voting rules in Texas.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/texas-republicans-finalize-bill-that-would-enact-stiff-new-voting-restrictions-and-make-it-easier-to-overturn-election-results/ar-AAKw6Tt?li=BBnb7Kz
The measure would make it illegal for election officials to send out unsolicited mail ballot applications, empower partisan poll watchers and ban practices such as drop boxes and drive-through voting that were popularized in heavily Democratic Harris County last year, according to a final draft distributed by legislative staff to voting right advocates Saturday morning.
So they want to ban sending out unsolicited mail ballot *applications*? Why? And they want to ban drop boxes and drive-through voting? Why? This is ridiculous.
Is there any evidence whatsoever that drop boxes were a significant source of fraud? No? Then banning drop boxes has nothing to do with “election integrity” and everything to do with simply making it harder to vote in general.
Not in the US, but that’s because US elections can’t be meaningfully audited. There certainly has been in other countries, which is why many countries require in-person voting on a single day, with exemptions only in special, justifiable cases.
That’s what “advanced democracies” and “civilized countries” do, as opposed to the banana republic style system Democrats are pushing for.
So the answer is no. And yet you want to restrict it anyway. Because this isn’t about ‘election integrity’, it is about stopping Democrats from winning.
Stopping Democrats from winning is what election integrity means, dumbass. Don’t you know anything? If Democrats win then the election is rigged, by virtue of their win. If Republicans win then everything was honest.
I love you are best friends with the one true libertarian Jeff. It does lore to destroy your character than I could ever dream of. Lol.
This is Team Red’s version of “never let a crisis go to waste”.
They have been wanting to tighten voting rules for a long time now. And now they have the pretext to enact the changes they have long desired.
Except in this case, the “crisis” was entirely manufactured out of whole cloth.
I suspect that THIS is why most of them continue on spreading the Big Lie. It is not that they actually believe there was MASSIVE FRAUD. It is because a *widespread belief* in MASSIVE FRAUD gives them a fig leaf of a rationalization to do what they’ve wanted to do for a long time now.
It’s not only bad for voting rights generally, it is not only bad for the health of the Republic, it is particularly bad for third parties as the political process becomes more and more dominated by voters that the Republican Party themselves choose.
It is not that they actually believe there was MASSIVE FRAUD. It is because a *widespread belief* in MASSIVE FRAUD gives them a fig leaf of a rationalization to do what theyâve wanted to do for a long time now.
You’re probably right. Just mass shootings rationalizes violating gun rights, kidnappings rationalize taking away parental rights, and offended minorities justify taking away speech rights.
Conservatives used to take the high road, but thanks to Trump they’re no different than the people they hate.
Conservatives used to take the high road, but thanks to Trump theyâre no different than the people they hate.
lol – rephrased: Conservatives are using our tactics against us. It’s not fair!
Since Democrats have found this to be an effective means of pushing important legislation, why should Republicans not use it as well?
Auditable, consistent voting procedures as found in other countries are good for the health of the Republic.
The absurd schemes that Democrats are pushing are not.
Auditable, consistent voting procedures as found in other countries are good for the health of the Republic.
Then why doesn’t the Texas bill provide for that? Hmm?
Because in the US, the details of how elections are run are up to local government. It’s a lousy system, but it’s not something they can change with a simple bill in Texas. What they can do is improve access for observers, required identification, and strengthen penalties, all of which they have done.
The answer is because the Texas legislature is not interested in ‘secure elections’ for its own sake. They are interested in passing a wish list of ‘reforms’ that they have been wanting to pass for a long time now, which may or may not have any connection whatsoever to fraud, using The Big Lie as an excuse to do so.
The answer is that the Texas legislature did what they could do quickly, and what they are doing is helpful.
What they did do is entirely reasonable and brings us close to what other nations do.
I hope that in the future, they will limit voting to a single day, require paper ballots, and improve counting and retention requirements. I expect you will be losing your mind over those requirements too.
No, that is a copout. You are inventing excuses for them. Why?
What they did, was make it more difficult to vote, in ways that are unrelated to any claims of fraud, without providing any more resources to help people vote. It really is a type of voter suppression.
You have to realize that one reason why early voting became popular in this country is because it was so inconvenient to vote in person on election day. So, with early voting diminished, but with making no additional accommodations to help people vote on election day, it is still just as inconvenient, even more so. What are you going to do about that?
Having everyone vote on the same day is great – PROVIDED that the resources are available to make that happen smoothly and effectively. You can’t have one without the other.
As you’ve been told, specifics of voting is up to local politicians, so if you live in Dallas and don’t like waiting in long lines to vote, elect people who will change that. Or – STFU.
…using The Big Lie…
You’ve been told on this website that the “Big Lie” has historically been used to describe the holocaust and their deniers.
Why continue to use for a single election given its connection to millions of deaths?
Is it because like Rob M you don’t believe in the holocaust? Or you’re just an anti-Semite?
Seems like everyone still has the right to vote. It’s not that complicated.
I want a requirement for in-person voting using paper ballots on a single day with voter ID requirements because it is the right thing to do.
Why should such simple, straightforward voting procedures “stop Democrats from winning”?
I want a requirement for in-person voting using paper ballots on a single day with voter ID requirements because it is the right thing to do.
Okay then. How many polling places should there be? Will it be proportional to the number of registered voters in a certain district? Are you willing to provide money – taxpayer money – to make sure that the number of polling places is equitable among all of the different districts, so that some places don’t have voters waiting in huge lines, while other places have very little waiting time at all? What are you willing to do to help voters get ID’s? Will they be free? What are you willing to do to help lower the obstacles that people may face in trying to get a voter ID? Will the ballots be printed only in English? Would you be willing to make election day a national holiday?
Of course.
Of course. And paper ballots and hand counting are cheaper than machines anyway.
Furthermore, we could make ballot counting similar to jury duty: half a dozen ballot counters get chosen randomly from among registered voters for each location. Between paper ballots, using schools and government buildings for polling, and free ballot counters, the cost for holding elections would be dramatically reduced.
States already need to issue free Real ID’s to everybody. I believe we should make sure that every American citizen and legal resident has such an ID (without being required to carry it).
The languages used should be left up to local and state governments.
Sure, why not? Or we could hold elections on Sundays, like other nations do.
Are you willing to provide money â taxpayer money â to make sure that the number of polling places is equitable among all of the different districts, so that some places donât have voters waiting in huge lines, while other places have very little waiting time at all?
Of course.
So what are you willing to do to make that happen? And, is this a deal-breaker if this doesn’t happen?
If the state of Texas, or some other state, wants to say “elections will be held only on one day, but no more additional money will be given to local boards of election to help people vote on election day”, will you support that or oppose that? Because that WILL mean long lines on election day and people turned away from voting. And that is the type of stuff that states are doing now.
I believe we should make sure that every American citizen and legal resident has such an ID (without being required to carry it).
Again, what are you willing to do to make that happen? Right now, it is just a diktat from the state: go get an ID, on your own expense, on your own time. I believe that if the state is going to require ID’s for voting, then the state should bend over backwards to help citizens get IDs. Go door-to-door if need be with ID equipment and hand out IDs to verified people, for individuals who can’t make it to the DMV office for whatever reason.
The point is that it is insufficient for the state to just make more rules. They have to provide the resources to help people satisfy those rules. Do you agree?
What are you willing to do to preserve your life?
“go get an ID, on your own expense, on your own time.”
Every other country in the world does that. Why are Americans such candy-asses?
I should have been more specific:
Every DEMOCRACY in the world does that.
“How many polling places should there be? ”
The same number as there were per square km in CA 20 years ago.
You don’t get it. Trump’s loss is proof of election fraud. Had he won then there would be no need for any audits or new laws or anything like that because his win would be proof that there was no fraud.
Lol. When jeff is your best friend on these boards youre a leftist.
Evidence of election fraud: unprecedented changes to rules that destroyed any semblance of election integrity, anomalous behavior such as stopping vote tallying for false or mysterious reasons after which a massive shift in results occurred, and internally inconsistent statistics that not only broke all historical precedent (such as 17/18 bellwether counties going for the “loser”) but are also otherwise inexplicable (massive disparity in mail in ratio for states like GA vs FL or PA vs OH).
Can anyone explain why PA, MI, WI would see Biden win mail in votes by a 50+% margin and only a 5-10% margin in OH, IN, and WV?
Several swing states that had been comfortable leads for Trump as the night of Nov. 3 ended turned into Biden wins due to mail in ballot ratios orders of magnitude more lopsided than any other states.
Yes. You believe all main stream narratives without a thought. We get it.
lots of Trolling off topuc…
odd, that. Fake comments dragging the topic off.. ” Red Herring..
Exactly. Why the heck would anyone care about sending out a mass mailing of mere applications.
I mean you could argue itâs a waste of money, or wasteful and therefore bad for the environment, but thatâs not the argument being made. If something is wrong with the application verification process, allowing fraudulent applications to get through, then fix that.
“Exactly. Why the heck would anyone care about sending out a mass mailing of mere applications…”
You, too, can act like you’re just asking “innocent” questions; I’m sure turd will go for it.
Legislation mandating so called hero pay raises violates businessesâ rights under the Equal Protection and Takings clauses of the U.S. Constitution and many other state laws which prohibit the unlawful taxation of groceries/confiscatory practices politicians love so dearly. Let the people see what this atrocity amounts to; another power trip created by power hungry people who should know full well that steep pay raises leads to higher prices which hurt the poor the most. So much for how much the leftists care about people.
Yes but your intellugent comment us much Pearls Before Swine in the face of Liberal Psychopaths that think nothing of mass baby murder
Kroger made $2.8 billion in profit in 2020. I think they could have afforded to keep two stores open…
Would you support a law that prohibits chains from closing stores if the local politicians don’t like it? That would fix everything.
1. What you think is irrelevant.
2. youre attacking the vuctim.
3. Deception by overgeneralization.
2.8 B over how many stores and how much in expenses? Net or gross?
God I hope your level of stupidity doesnt have any part in running a businesd.
You kidding? That level of stupidity stays clear of business! Instead it runs the government that tells businesses what to do.
“Kroger made $2.8 billion in profit in 2020. I think they could have afforded to keep two stores open⊔
Here folks, is the ultimate “I’m a fucking business ignoramus, and proud of it!” comment.
Their business; their decision.
Why is that hard for you to understand.
I’m pretty sure they made a profit through many mechanisms, one of which is by closing stores which are not profitable.
I mean if you owned 5 restaurants and 2 were failing badly after 3 years of operation do you a) continue to throw good money after bad or b) shut them down?
I’ll give you a hint – if you want to be successful, it’s a.
Grocery stores “absolutely should be paying this increase,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Kortez. “And if they shut down stores, it’s just out of spite.”
And if I ran a grocery store, and would say “yes, it is out of spite, and fuck you” to councilmember Kortez.
Easily fixed. Pass a law that prohibits businesses from closing, and the penalty is death. Then those greedy bastards will be forced to run at a perpetual loss. They’re rich. They can afford it.
Good to see you giving in to your chosen leftist ideology

Just checking since someone using your name is still whining about the ‘deadly’ protest in January, so either you need a checkup or you remain a fucking ignoramus.
I am not a troll.
Muting someone you disagree with is lazy and childish. Especially when you can just scroll past. I mean, I hate Tony with the passion of a thousand suns, but I wouldnât even mute him.
But you do you I guess.
JesseAz doesn’t say anything worth agreeing or disagreeing with. He just makes personal attacks to try to draw you into an argument about you, not the topic. That’s what makes him a troll, and that’s why everyone should Mute him.
As evidenced right here, you are incapable of posting anything which rates a reply to what you claim to be the topic.
YOU, or some idiotic logical failure, are the topics of every one of your posts, lefty shit.
There’s always an excuse/rationalization for it, but it doesn’t make it right.
Additionally in your first comment about this you listed 4 people you have muted, when pushed on it, you examine only one.
Seriously if you have to mute that many commenters, why come around? or why not try to fix whatever is wrong with you to make this necessary?
“with is lazy and childish.”
not when a person takes up excessive bandwidth and only trolls extraneous matters
There’s always an excuse to fall back on; it still doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to mute anyone other than spam bots.
Agreed completely.
Give Joes Whore some time. Hes babbling incoherently while shes busy subverting the Nation!
“Then those greedy bastards will be forced to run at a perpetual loss.”
Thats the outcome of Obama Care.
Now that theyve destroyed insurance, theyre after grocery stores.
Remember that from their point of view, taxation is paying your fair share while profit is theft. Speaking of fair share, the fact that the rich are still rich is proof right there that they don’t pay their fair share! If they had then they wouldn’t still be rich!
Socialism requires capitalists to create wealth for the socialists to steal.
Truly pathetic strawman:

If you are enraged about Kamala Harris saying “enjoy the weekend,” you forever forfeit the right to complain about snowflakes, crybullies, cancel culture, political correctness, etc.
Yup. Team Red aren’t really being snowflakes here. They are just pretending to be snowflakes in getting outraged at her comment, because they hate her and will object to whatever she says. It is DDS – Democrat Derangement Syndrome.
Tell that to the widows of the fallen.
Whos she screwing this weekend for her political gain?
I disagree, although Krunk Kacklin’ Kammie isn’t the only one to blame.
Memorial Day should be a somber time to remember the fallen. Veteran’s Day should be the better time to celebrate the living. Somehow, the activities on these days got mixed up.
And both days should be a time to think about how to see that there are no more war dead and no more physically and mentally mangled Veterans.
Sadly, very few people are good at any of this anymore.
I should clarify:
I disagree totally with Froot Sushi’s asinine moral equivalence between respecting for the fallen and totalitarian ideologies. (I didn’t even realize who that was until I clicked the link. Geez!)
I do fully agree with you, Nardz, that Froot Sushi created a whole acre of Strawmen.
If it wasn’t for the fallen we remember on this day, depending on the outcome, Froot Sushi might not have hair to primp and preen and might not even get fruit in his daily sushi…and might not have the freedom to say “To be sure!”

Quote the tweet. No oneâs following Twitter links, because theyâre a bad company that shouldnât get traffic.
Understandable, but it’s a cartoon

An awful lot of “libertarians” are extremely useful idiots to the Woke. It’s a good question as to why. Either way, shame on Cato.
_Peter Suderman
If McSuderman used Wikipedia instead of HBO and Twitter for his “source” he’d know the actual number is 26. Twice the number of white residents killed in the riot.
Hold on, Wikipedia is a “lib” site that can’t be trusted, no?
I read that on Wingnut.com.
Funny thing, there is no wingnut.com
Itâs about 300 blacks who got killed in their gated, upper class community, when one of their own raped a white young woman, and when confronted about it, fired guns at the whites, killing two dozen.
Citation, please?
Since there are workers who “call in scared” as a result of stimulus checks and unemployment benefits, I get “hero pay” in the form of time-and-a-half overtime anyway.
Oh, and I got a nice little bonus for my two shots of Pfizer! #ReasonAndScienceForTheWinBitches
OT: why the fuck won’t Tim Tebow go away?
Every Fundie Wingnut type thinks Tebow is some remarkable athletic specimen held back by reverse racism.
Tim Tebow – YOU SUCK. RETIRE NOW AND SHUT YOUR FU”CKING PIEHOLE!
Gee, maybe he got the chance because his former coach knows something about his work ethic and leadership skills? Not to mention the willingness to take a less glamorous job than QB just to help his hometown team.
No NFL team is going to hand anyone a job unless he helps them win.

Under the law that states may not pass laws to impair the obligation of contracts, you’d think that suddenly a tyrant”s machinations to, er, “do good by re-imagining rights” would be held accountable in a court of law. Kroger, however, has the corporate structure and perhaps no guts to defy law, being subjected to regulations in all stares that would turn any mule green.
A sad state of affairs if to manage owned property and contracts means living in terror of government backlash for opposing any related largesse from acting state regents.
Better to have no groceries sold than to sell groceries with the aim of sharing profits with the actual owners of a business when stockholders — stockholders of California vs. stockholders in the USA and around the world invested in Kroger.
“…pay raises for many workers, job losses for others, and higher prices and fewer options for consumers…”
Every one of those is a consequence explicitly preferred by those who have favored this (and other similar) policies. It’s almost like that’s the whole point…
Like the cat named Boz Scaggs, you, Dave Boz, are giving us “The Dirty Lowdown.”
And for that, “You Make Me Smile,” a song by Dave Coz.
It’s like the old “Pop-Up Video” show up in here. đ
Never forget that these noble cities that are patting themselves on their backs over “hero pay” closed down a gazillion businesses over covid orthodoxy. Just think about the state of mind of restaurant owners as they spent thousands to erect outdoor patios and tried to survive on 25% capacity. And science generally proved eateries outside of bars to be safe. Why were waiters and kitchen workers denied jobs and the chance to he “heroes”?
Look, damnit! If you didnât make it yourself, it came from a store! And if it came from a store, it came here on a truck! If governments would simply do their legitimate job of protecting Life, Liberty, and Property, stores would not lose so much to looters and vandals. People would be less wont to show their ass in stores like barbarians, the customer experience in stores would be so much better.
Stores would attract more customers and business, more profits would result, then workers could get greater investment dividends, greater bonuses, and âhero payâ with every regular paycheck, not just during a pandemic.
CEOs also need to grow a spine and tell the public:
