Some Officials Want To Keep Mandating Masks, Despite the CDC Guidance
Want to keep wearing a mask yourself? That's fine. Want to force fully vaccinated people to join you? The science doesn't support that.

For the duration of the pandemic, Team Blue has obeyed a simple refrain—one reinforced ad nauseam by Democratic politicians, the mainstream media, and the country's technocratic elite: Follow the Science and Listen to the Experts.
In liberal enclaves like Manhattan and D.C., compliance with the extremely risk-averse recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been nearly universal. Out of an abundance of caution, and in deference to people like White House coronavirus advisor Anthony Fauci and CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, many left-leaning people have worn masks, even while alone outdoors.
But last week, the CDC abruptly reversed course. While Walensky had up until recently warned of "impending doom" if people did not continue to practice aggressive masking and social distancing, the government's new position is that the vaccinated can go back to normal. People who are fully vaccinated do not need to worry about getting sick, and are extremely unlikely to contract COVID-19 and spread it to someone else. For them, the pandemic is over.
This wildly good news is, if anything, overdue: For weeks, if not months, it has been evident that the vaccines are incredibly effective and would likely significantly reduce transmission. No one should accuse the CDC of moving too quickly: It waited and waited and waited for a scientific consensus on the vaccines, and then it waited even longer, and now has finally conceded the truth.
Yet the reaction from the Listen-to-the-Experts crowd has ranged from disbelief to terror. Over on Twitter, many progressives have been shocked by the new guidance and have signaled they would ignore it. Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn't want to be mistaken for a Republican. On the streets of D.C., I have overheard other people make similar remarks.
MSNBC's Rachel Maddow candidly confessed that she had trained herself to see unmasked people as a threat and that she would have to work at rewiring her brain. (To her credit, Maddow suggested that her very progressive audience should do the same.) And there are now countless op-eds penned by liberals with headlines like "Why I Won't Quit My Mask. Not Yet."
If people want to keep wearing masks, that's their right. Everyone who objected to being bullied for not wearing a mask should intuitively grasp that it would be similarly obnoxious to turn around and start barking orders at people who fail to ditch them. I'm not interested in mask-shaming here.
But officials who mandated masks on the grounds that the experts had deemed this necessary should not get away with keeping such mandates in place now that the experts have turned against them. Case in point: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she would seek additional clarification from the CDC before making any changes—and in the meantime, she encouraged everyone to keep wearing masks.
"People need to continue to follow the public health guidance that has gotten us this far, and masks are a big and important part of that," Lightfoot said. Other Democratic officials around the country, from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, have echoed that sentiment. But the public health guidance says that masks are important for people who aren't vaccinated. It's not confusing. Wear a mask until you're fully vaccinated, and then don't.
The mask was supposed to be a temporary public health intervention, and it's regrettable that for many people these little bands of cloth have become Team Blue's version of the Make America Great Again hat. If officials keep forcing this choice on others even past the point of vaccination, they can't accurately cite the science in their defense.

Good thing you got that nasty Trump out that was pushing to end the charades.
Which did you actually view worse... lockdowns/masks or mean tweets? Wait, we know.

There's no confusion. Masks are irrelevant bullshit. The vaccines are marginally effective. COVID is an overhyped cold. Liberals are conspiracy nuts who masturbate to fear.
650,000 dead ain’t from colds, hasbro. Yes, it’s been over hyped, but comments like yours are similarly stupid.
you didn't give anyone time to recalculate down
650,000 (?) / 331,449,281 (U.S. Census Bureau, April 1, 2020) = .0019 = 0.19%. And when you figure 80% of these are old, most of those are very old, and with co-morbidities...Well, for most of us, even with the dubious 650K number, it IS like a bad flu (technically it is a cold virus).
And masks. You'd will probably reduce your risk more by ditching the thing and wearing a motorcycle helmet when you drive, or rigidly driving the speed limit, or quit smoking and staying in shape...
A mask might save someone's life, sure. Mathematically it's possible. Using math to deceive is not science. Rocks fall out of the sky too. One may hit you. You can die. Always best to wear your helmet outside. It might save your life...The math say it can happen. This is the 'science' they used to scare millions (for political power), destroy lives and businesses, ruin children's education...
I wear my mask to prevent tiger attacks.
Can't argue with that logic.
What are you trying to say? That Covid was a way of decreasing the cost of social security? What changes with the average age of those who have died? My mom is 85 years old and I still wouldn't like to lose her. If you're very lucky, you might live to be 85. Unless Covid or something similar kills you in your 70's. According to what you say, that wouldn't really matter.
I think his point is that, if you're older and/or have co-morbidities, sure, wear a mask. There's enough of a statistical difference to warrant such a thing. Otherwise, the risk is so small that you might as well concern yourself with other random absurdities (i.e. rocks falling on your head) and every other theoretical danger in the world, at which point one can hardly be said to be "living". Quantity of life is important, but quality almost matters a great deal. If you're profoundly concerned with the former and want real defensive respiratory efficacy, wear a gas mask.
Knowing that the disease disproportionately effects older folks tells us two things:
1. The severity of the disease is not super alarming if it mostly kills the immuno-compromised.
2. Mitigation could have been targeted for the easily identifiable cohorts. We didn't need entire population interventions.
No, you don't want anyone to die. But old people dying is less bad than young people dying. It just is Old people are going to die pretty soon in any case. That's what being old is. We should really be looking at quality life years lost, not raw numbers of deaths. A large proportion of people listed as covid deaths were probably going to die this year anyway.
When talking public policy, there is no room for sentiment. The only reasonable goal is to minimize the disruption to society.
...and the fact that the age distribution of deaths is so predictable that means it is easier to mitigate an easily identifiable smallish cohort.
Died with (when testing is positive for up to 3 months lost exposure) instead of died of. 3 million Americans die a year. Excess deaths was around 150k more than last year which is about a standard deviation from norm.
Where did the other 500k go?
Into booths to vote for Binden?
Please link to the excess deaths data. Been looking for this.
Anyone can find the excess death data to fit their own priors. It is just another estimate.
Good point! What we can hope for is that the politicians who insist on continued masking, will wear a really thick and large mask - like a muffler.
650,000 isn't the deaths from COVID or even the deaths with COVID. It's the deaths from all causes in excess of the normal death rate - and many of these are due to the lockdowns, not the disease.
Stress kills, and the lockdowns have left many people with a stressful cut in income. Social isolation stressed everyone who actually obeyed the rules, except extreme introverts. Sitting on the couch or at a home computer all day certainly added to the stress in increasing heart attacks and strokes. Suicides and murders are both way up. Many routine medical checkups and procedures have been delayed by up to a year, sometimes allowing cancer and cardiovascular disease to grow untreated.
Was watching a hockey game the other day, I think it was in Pittsburgh. They said there was 4,700 fans in attendance. The next day the restriction would be eased to allow twice that many to attend the next game. I thought, really? One more day? How random is that? They couldn’t just start the playoffs with the increased capacity?
The analogy that comes to mind is balancing a treat on a dogs nose, but not letting him eat it until you say it’s ok. People need to understand the contempt that their elected “betters” hold them in.
I’m grudgingly willing to give the benefit of the doubt that politicians just panicked and overreacted with lockdowns and restrictions early on when they were still trying to figure out how bad it might get. But man, they have milked this out while going out to dinner, having their hair done, and going on vacation in defiance of their own orders for the rest of us. It’s fucking evil.
Not sure that there is any will out there to punish them though. Too much fear. Gimme a fuckin stimee and the masked singer, and it’s all good. Haha.
No masks work, Vaccines are very efficient in both protecting you and those around you.
Throw the bones...
I am as apolitical as they come. Mostly because politics bore me because I believe that people should listen to the other side of an debate and address those concerns before trying to form a consensus that works for everyone. but I am a pollyanna, and that is not how it works.
So let me spell it out for you in a way that your orange demigod didn't have the balls to say last March when he should have.
COVID spreads through the air, from person to person. You don't need close contact, and in March 2020 the only way to control this spread of the disease was to isolate and mask up. A person could be standing next to you and have COVID and not even be sick or showing it.
That was true then and it is still true. Your beloved pumpkin just didn't have the balls to tell you the truth. That person could easily have been you or any one of us, and then you bring the virus home, and boom, you just killed grandma.
You think I am joking. You may think that it isn't serious, or fake news. Brother, I have 4 dead friends, and 2 others with "long COVID" who have significant, life altering conditions that no one knows when or if they will recover from. It is not a overhyped cold. It never was.
I have 5 year old niece, who is severely immunocompromised. Simply put, if she gets exposed, she dies. Not a single doubt in my mind.
This pandemic was an extraordinary worldwide emergency that even now requires extraordinary sacrifices to manage and keep under control. The virus does not respect politics, political boundaries or wealth. It is not liberal, or conservative, and respects no religion, creed philosophy, culture or race. It is not a china virus or a problem of the Asian people. It is not a simple flu or a cold or anything that any of us have ever seen.
Trump should have said that, and he would have had my everlasting respect. Instead, We have 586,000 dead in the US. 2,293 just in the last week. THREE MILLION, FOUR HUNDRED and SIX THOUSAND, THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE FORMERLY LIVING PEOPLE who are now in boxes.
Do I blame your dear leader for their deaths? You are damn right I do. Because he was the man in the Oval office. It was his solemn duty to manage this crisis like the leader he was supposed to be. Instead he spent precious months calling people names and paying attention only to which empty suit in politics was willing to blow his idiotic ego. How many could have been saved by the leaders telling you the TRUTH? We will never know, but it certainly is not ZERO!
This country used to know what to do in a crisis. We lost less than this in 4 years of world war II and to fight that we mobilized the whole god dammed country.
The difference between you and thousands of other patriots who did the right thing is that we have the depth of character to do something, simply to benefit you and keep your family safe. A sacrifice I gladly made, and will continue to make until there we are at least as safe as we were in the before times. I don't do this because I want too. And I certainly don't do it because some government bureaucrat said I should. I wear a mask because I do not want to be the cause of you being sick. And I will do so until I am absolutely certain that there is no danger.
So keep sitting there and looking at this through a lens of something so trivial as politics when people are still dying. You are free to not wear a mask, or not get your shots. Or even worse, fake vaccination records and claim you got them, when you did not. But know this: I indict all who bring this kind of talk and behavior before God as irredeemable a******* unworthy of serious consideration.
You really think anybody is going to read through that rambling and deranged word salad? Nobody cares what you think grandma.
Yes, that rant wasn't really designed for people with attention spans as short as those of a hubcap.
you first say "I am as apolitical as they come." but then two seconds later say "orange demigod"
apolitical or just TDS riddled....
Thats what I noticed too. Way to out yourself as a liar in the first paragraph. Also threw pumpkin in there.
I also hate trump, but this guy is a fuckstick that isnt going to convince anyone of anything. The more obnoxious those people are the more uncooperative Im going to be in response. No I dont care if I die from the cold, and I just flat out dont believe that Im increasing any old persons chance of dying by living life normally.
You cowards can eat shit. Go ban alcohol again karen.
Actually, when "we" say "TDS," we mean something QUITE different...
Actually you do need close and prolonged contact. Passing someone on the street doesn't cut it. Masks are useless to contain viruses. They're very small.
Sorry, but we are not going to continue with masking, social distancing, reduced capacity, etc. indefinitely for the sake of your niece and the extremely small group of immunocompromised people in the world. Whatever she's been doing to keep her safe for the past year plus, she will need to continue to do for the rest of her life. That's just the way it is.
We lost less than this in 4 years of world war II and to fight that we mobilized the whole god dammed country.
Hey, you ignorant, subliterate moron--you realize that just as many people died 100 years from the flu, and public policy back then was the exact same as it is now?
Uhhhh, do you know where you are you fucking retard? This isn't a pro-trump place, that's like going to axios and screeching about how they're all part of the alt-right. Fuck off slaver.
Your insults betray anything good you would have said. You can't get over Trump, and your arrogance isolates at least half of the population - So much for listening to all sides, as you promoted.
dude, you need healthier friends and family. they're probably the same people that want free health insurance.
Notice I said health insurance, not healthcare. healthcare is free, every day: eat right, get plenty of exercise and good sleep. that's healthcare.
apolitical my ass
Worst mass death event in US history. Sigh. Another idiot who thinks Covid is a hoax
Spanish flu killed 700,000 Americans in 1918. At a time when the US population was 30% of what it is today. The notion that covid is the worst mass death event in US history is so transparently false as to be laughable. Try not to be a moron when calling out morons.
And the 1918 flu disproportionately affected younger people. That is a huge difference. Pretending that every death is equivalent and equally tragic is just idiotic. It is not a tragedy when a sick, elderly person dies. Sorry, it just isn't.
It's not a hoax. But the numbers are inflated and the response has been a disaster causing far more harm than the virus.
worst mass death event? get a library card and read some books, idiot
^GOLD!
It's got a lot of the lefties so confused. Wear it and you're an anti vaxxer, don't wear it and you might be killing someone. This is why we say liberalism is a mental disorder and the mass media has created this situation along with scurrilous bureaucrats.
Haven't seen "liberalism is a mental disorder" in a while. Is Michael Savage still on the radio?
Nothing like an angry Jew with a microphone. Oh wait, Levine is still on.
Ben Shapiro !! Great, machine gun delivery.
Buy new car, rent new car or sell car
I think he went to podcasts. I would sometimes catch him while scrolling the radio dial. I can't understand how anyone could listen for more than a couple of minutes.
God damn, you even run to protect people being called liberals now.
LOL.
Jesse don’t you see, he’s being sarcasmic? What an edge lord!
You mean that dude that figured out he could get paid more for being an angry wingnut than an angry proggie?
That's how most of the neocon claque migrated over.
Nah, they just focus on that one anecdote where a vaccinated person might have gotten sick or passed COVID to someone else and that's all the excuse they need to keep wearing. If it saves even one life...
Some anti-maskers are starting to wear masks because there's a new conspiracy theory out there that you can catch Bill Gates' microchips from people who have had an mRNA vaccines. Their breath droplets and skin flakes can infect you and render your infertile. So wear a mask to be safe.
Yes, this is every bit as stupid as Sovereign types who scream about government documents getting their panties all twisted because Obama didn't have a government long form document. Sigh.
But he did have a disposition matrix
The Bee stings!
https://babylonbee.com/news/libertarians-to-begin-wearing-masks-now-that-government-says-they-dont-have-to
“Some anti maskers are......”
No, they’re not. That’s ridiculous. Microchips migrating through “ breath droplets and skin flakes”? Bullshit. You’re making that up, or someone else is.
Cite?
I would like some of those microchips. Can they be used for Bitcoin mining?
Ha! ???? Ha! ???? Ha! ???? Ha! ???? Ha! ???? Ha! ???? Yeah I saw that.
All I know is that since my second shot, I have gotten great wifi. The 5G is working wonders.
and the mass media has created this situation along with scurrilous bureaucrats.
you forgot about the medical community, which has been all over the map, and has created enough fear out of wholecloth to last a lifetime...
Libertarians should be pro mask. Facial recognition cameras no longer work.
no longer true. Theyve used this as an opportunity to improve facial recognition software.
"Team Blue's version of the Make America Great Again hat."
They follow the POLITICAL science.
State-mandated MAGA hat. Trump could only have dared dream...
Excellent point...
So let's look at these totems/badges in comparison to each other to think about what they reveal:
MAGA hat - "make America great again", calling for pride in one's heritage and self-determined action
Covid mask - obedience to neurotic diktats and encouragement to view your friends and neighbors as threats
Of maybe my COVID Mask means that I have a severely immunocompromised kid at home who will surely die if she gets it, so I cannot take the chance and will wear a spacesuit if I have to to protect her because, my personal freedom pales in comparison to the desire to keep her alive at all costs.
but sure. one of those.
None of that argument makes me responsible for your inbred child. Reality is not going to bend to your leftist theology and you have no right to expect others to participate in your delusions. Btw, what kind of defective children are you shitting out that is immunocompromised to COVID? You’re all fucking drama queens.
If you arent lying, your kid is a goner. Good thing I know youre full of shit.
so I cannot take the chance and will wear a spacesuit if I have to to protect her
You do know they sell MOPP4 gear at military surplus stores, right? Why are you putting your kid in danger by not being fully covered at all times?
I saw a guy in a red MAGA mask last weekend. Until I read that line, I hadn't really understood just how subversive such an item is.
Met some friends at a local venue this weekend, to listen to some live music and a beer.
The place was very open to outdoors, and noticed some patrons, socially distanced, sitting at the outside bar. They all had on masks, and would slip them to the side when they took a sip, and then immediately put them back on.
I guess the virtue is not going to signal itself.
..have a beer, not listen to a beer.
Though there are certainly worse things to listen to.
Dunno. Beer is always beckoning me with it's siren song.
It may not even be virtue signalling. I think a lot of people well and truly believe in the cult of the mask.
Possible, but they sure looked like douche bags to me.
I'm fine with that.
As long as they don't require me to wear one, or require businesses to enforce masking if they don't want to.
That's what worries me as enough people are narcissistic enough to think that their choices should be universal, and lacking in imagine enough to not understand what's wrong with it.
Good example. Q.U.T. listened to music and had a beer. I often went to a brewery that had a stage. They cannot run their open mic. They can't really do music either (though it's getting better) because you needed reservations, there was a time limit on guests, etc. The mandates make this mostly outdoors place NOT able to run their basic business model, which is largely drop in for the blues jam, play a song, have a pint while you're there.
I never wondered why people can't just mind their own business more than I do these day. Maybe having older sisters just taught me that "You're being selfish" is code for "I want something you have" and I'm just too jaded.
Maybe having older sisters just taught me that “You’re being selfish” is code for “I want something you have” and I’m just too jaded.
Other people are too self-centered to realize that I'm the actual center of things.
Totally philosophical statement. But for you, that's true. You are absolutely the center of your world.
As I am of mine.
It's the recognition of both as true that separates the social from the narcissists.
Agreed. Which is why "you shouldn't be self-centered" is a nonsense statement. If you are particularly aggravated by other people being self-centered, you may be a narcissist.
> require businesses to enforce masking if they don’t want to.
I'm opposed to businesses requiring them too. Although I suppose they can do whatever they want as private companies.
"No Burqa, No Service."
I did the same thing, but all but one person were maskless. The shocker, it was a generally leftist crowd in Massachusetts. I was absolutely astounded.
I dunno. The "Logan rule" of lifting the mandate when 70% are vaccinated seems like a reasonable choice.
As much as libertarians don't give a shit, the people in public health policy are trying to provide guidelines that help people who don't know any better, and to manage strain on the system. It's a government response to the tragedy of the commons.
You'd be pretty pissed if you died of a heart attack because the ICU was full of dumbasses who chose to get infected with COVID.
The emergency rooms emptied out long ago.
My expectation is that areas with covid infections ship those folks to nursing homes.
No, the people in public health agency only care about expanding the power of their burocracy. Notice that the solution to every problem is give them more money and power. They even go as far as to declare thing that have nothing to do with health to be a health issue that the only way to solve it is to onece again give them more money and power.
It is far to late to believe the "don't attribute malice what can be explained by stupidity". The health policy people have shown that they are evil.
hey... it worked for teachers unions
Hospitals have been well below capacity soon after the first wave of virus, so not likely anyone is going to "die of a heart attack because the ICU was full of dumbasses."
So just keep following the political science, why don't you?
the people in public health policy are trying to provide guidelines
Which is what they should do, rather than providing mandates. Because if nothing else, a big trouble with mandates is exactly what we're seeing right now - all of use live under the jurisdictions of multiple, overlapping agencies who are responsible for providing guidelines/mandates and they provide conflicting guidance/mandates.
Even when they are only "providing guidelines," they are indirectly creating mandates thanks to the leftist governors who listen to them when it expands their power, but ignore them if it lessens their power.
Also, if it's a mandate, I will resist it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Some things are more important than avoiding this one particular virus. Our basic right to operate in the world and not have our behaviors micromanaged is one of those things.
I'd be pretty pissed if I couldn't get my surgery due to dumb-asses who got too fat and took all the emergency rooms with heart issues.
What about if you couldn't get your surgery because it was deemed non-essential?
What if you were fat, dumb, needed surgery and were too scared to get it done cuz “public health officials” pimped fear of the coof?
Typical. Disagreeing with your methods means we "don't give a shit".
There's no reason to wear masks anywhere in the US - inside, outside, with crowds, without crowds. Anybody who has any significant chance of getting hospitalized from COVID has already had plenty of opportunity to get vaccinated. I shouldn't have to give up my freedom because some people are too paranoid to get vaccinated.
The ICU point is absurd - COVID would have to return to the peak rates for that to be an issue. Not gonna happen. Even if we're not at "Logan rule" herd immunity we are pretty damn close to herd immunity, certainly close enough that patients flooding the ICU's is not a reasonable possibility.
No point for you. I on the other hand have a immunocompromised child who cannot get COVID. I have absolutely no doubt that if she does, she will die. She is that sick.
So for me and my family, we were wearing masks constantly before COVID and we will keep doing it.
I would say walk a mile in my shoes before judging me in my mask. But seriously i would not wish this on anyone.
So I would say that kindness and compassion are not four letter words.
Pathetic asshole on the internet virtue signaling and begging for “kindness and compassion” from random total strangers. Fuck off already, nobody cares about your stupid and boring life, you Slaver. Leave people alone Karen.
The “Logan rule” of lifting the mandate when 70% are vaccinated seems like a reasonable choice.
"I'm just going to ignore that damn near half the country already has some form of naturally acquired immunity to COVID when creating my bright line."
I just checked the local figures and COVID hospitalizations in NJ are under 5% of total M/S capacity and 10% of ICU capacity (in a state where there's built-in slack of ~30% in a normal year); newly reported cases have plummeted by 80% in the past six weeks; over 50% of the state has had at least one shot; Rt is 0.6; and the % positivity rate is under 3%. Why bother with restrictions at this point?
The pandemic is done. Let your control impulse go and figure out how to properly readjust to meatspace.
The folks who tend to end up in the ICU, those 65+, are already 85% vaccinated. If the concern is hospital/ICU space, we should have opened a month ago.
Actually, you can take it further: if the main concern is hospital/ICU space, we should remember that hospitals are traditionally more full during winter months than during summer months. Arguably, public health officials ought start trying to trigger a COVID wave in a couple of months, when hospitals tend to be at a lull, so we can have as many people immune as possible before the hospital 'peak season'.
THANK YOU!
Even if you're worried that people will get sick and need medical care when you let them out, THERE'S NO BETTER TIME FOR THAT TO HAPPEN THAN DURING SUMMER.
Why do we want to drag the curve into flu season when the hospitals are full?
Yes (well maybe not the deliberately trigger a wave part, but I think seasonality is the main thing for when it happens anyway). I think it was a big mistake to encourage young and healthy people to isolate last summer and this winter would have been much less severe if most people had gone on as usual over the summer.
You’d be pretty pissed if you died of a heart attack because the ICU was full of dumbasses who chose to get infected with COVID.
Actually that would be great, since if you’re pissed you ain’t dead.
Exactly. If I was dead, I wouldn’t really give a shit about anything anymore. Plus, if the ICU fills up, we can just set up more multi-million dollar field hospitals that went largely unused (I don’t think the one at the Columbus Convention Center saw a single patient... the hospitals were furloughing staff though).
One problem with the herd immunity argument is that it is based on a really simplistic model of human interaction. Namely, it does not take into account the way actual human networks work. The assumption is that the population is homogeneous, meaning each individual can come into contact with every other susceptible individual in the population. But real human populations are highly heterogeneous, with small clusters of tightly-knit groups connected through few connections. Simulation studies assessing herd immunity in real-world human networks show that herd immunity threshold levels are generally lower than that given by the homogeneous assumption.
Another article on State-issued guidance and Reason can't even be bothered to mention that there is not a shred of evidence for the efficacy of masks. Every related to masks and facial coverings was an ab solute sham, an instrument of social control, a way to see just how far people would go to obey the experts and their political leaders, and finally, just another example of the government needing to pretend that they're "doing something about something." During the pandemic Reason became another rag that just reports on the Stateist circus and the chattering monkeys who dance around under the big tent.
The ICUs for the most part were not filled during the height of the COVID, why would they be filled now? Take off your mask and buy a t-shirt that signals your virtue.
Or buy a Prius to virtue signal. Just don't drive 65 MPH in the fast lane and slow all the normal people down.
Or just wear your “I’m vaccinated” sticker, like some of my coworkers. It’s the new “I voted” sticker. Everyone can know you’re a model citizen.
Shameless plug for the Bee - - - -
https://babylonbee.com/news/new-merch-alert-behold-the-i-identify-as-vaccinated-t-shirt
Officially, the ICUs in L.A. were totally overwhelmed about 5 weeks in to Newsom's "tap the brakes" lockdown during the holidays. It's really remarkable how quickly CA closed the gap with TX and FL as far as infections and deaths during that 3 months; something like 65-70% of all Covid cases in CA since day one of the pandemic (not counting the unknowable number of cases that went undetected in the 4-8 weeks when the virus was spreading wild on the US west coast and WHO was insisting that it was contained in Wuhan) happened during the second state-wide lockdown that was supposed to be getting it "under control".
Masks have been very effective for fooling the sheeple. There is no other explanation for why Dictator Cuomo and Dictator Murphy have approval ratings as high as they are. The latter might well get re-elected this year, despite a record of tyranny and incompetence.
@Nathanbotas
There is actually a fairly large body of evidence that masks work. For example, in "An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19," Howard et. al state that "The preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles in both laboratory and clinical contexts." I could cite more studies, but since you cited zero in your comment I think that that's good enough. A giant meta-analysis like that is certainly more than a shred of evidence. I personally started wearing a mask before the government mandated it, because it seemed like the kind of thing that a halfway-decent human being ought to do.
I think the issue is that we are used to statists crying wolf by claiming every single "problem" that they want the government to "solve" is a "public health issue." We are so used to statists making up fake public health issues to justify power grabs that we instinctively resist when a genuine public health issue comes along. This time though, they weren't crying wolf, the wolf was very real.
And even if masks' efficacy was disproven, which makes more sense, that politicians adopted a bad idea and didn't want to admit they were wrong, or that politicians were intentionally doing some kind of insane plot in social control? The latter is an insane conspiracy theory. Politicians are not that competent! They could not keep something like that a secret, someone would leak it.
Luckily it's a moot point now. We have the vaccine, so the masks are no longer needed.
They never were.
"...reduces transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles in both laboratory and clinical contexts." Bars, restaurants, grocery stores, event venues, etc, are not laboratories and clinics. You're comparing apples to oranges. There's absolutely no parity between such controlled and uncontrolled environments.
" reduces transmissibility per contact" By how much? Run a big enough experiment and you can detect a 1% change, but that's meaningless in the real world.
Another question is what masks were used and how the people wore them? An N95 surgical mask that is sealed to the face will certainly make a significant difference, but a bandana tied loosely around the face will let most of the virus particles either seep around the edges or pass through the cloth. The cheap or "stylish" masks I see all around aren't any better.
For my part, with every mask I've tried (except an expensive medical grade one with a valve that lets the exhale bypass the filter), when I exhale I can feel my breath around my nose rather than pushing through the filter. If I was sick, not even the expensive one would do anything to protect others from my germs. It's possible that on the inhale the mask sucks down to my face so the air comes through the filter, but the pores are still much larger than the virus.
And those masks fog up my glasses unless the humidity is exceptionally low. That's dangerous even inside a store.
There are literally hundreds of studies on the efficacy of masks. You actually have to make an effort to NOT find them.
Pull your head out of your ass
There are literally hundreds of studies on the efficacy of masks.
"literally hundreds"--no, dumbshit, and prior to April 2020, the consensus was that they were useless outside of controlled settings. That's why the NEJM had to walk back their statement when the narrative changed that we've always been at war with Eastasia and masks always work to prevent community spread.
Either over 500,000 died from the coof or masks work. Take your pick.
BTW, how many people died from the coof in your nursing homes?
I've seen some models and some mechanistic studies. But nothing that actually demonstrates any significant positive effect in the real world.
Precisely. And it's pretty much impossible to test "in the real world". I suppose all you can do is try to compare similar geographical locations (with as much in common as possible) where one region had a mask mandate (and it was mostly followed) and another region did not.
Case in point: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she would seek additional clarification from the CDC
That's a common phrase used when a politician either wants to focus group something before making a decision or wants to ignore something entirely by dragging out the decision making process until people forget a decision needs to be made.
She and others like her have made their stand, and wearing the mask [while appropriate in certain times in places, but much less so now] is their badge of honor.
You cannot very well just expect her to take it off and look like a "Covidiot," can you? It's going to take a while for that dust to settle.
or as Rachel Maddow states, Lori Lightfoot needs to rewire her brain so she doesn't see herself as the enemy which will also take some time.
Well, these people who need "you don't have to wear a mask if you are vaccinated" explained or clarified always seem to be people who need "shall not be infringed" explained and clarified.
What [sic] to force fully vaccinated people to join you? The science doesn't support that.
Now, prove to me you're vaccinated.
It's going to be like when we had to display our fishing license on our hats. At least where I'm at. That way the warden could see you have one.
"My caughd"
You can tell because they aren’t wearing a mask.
Further, prove you didn't catch it.
If you're vaxxed, you're at near zero risk of hospitalization or death from the disease, at least from any current variants. So, the unvaxxed unmasked person is mostly a risk to themself. They'll get the disease eventually, and that's their risk choice. I don't see a need to monitor it. Some people can't get the vaccine for medical reasons apparently, so I guess the unvaxxed unmasked affect them, but a card isn't really going to get checked anyway, so realistically they're just going to have to take precautions as they feel appropriate.
And the people who cannot get vaccinated are generally people who are immuno-compromised. These people are at risk for lots of shit every time they go out. For them, nothing much has changed.
Now, prove to me you’re vaccinated.
this highlights the idiocy of the virus mitigation; without some visible indicator of vaccine receipt, the whole thing was bogus from the get go...if I refused the vaccine, I'd make sure to tell the mask nazis I'd gotten the jab...
I went into Potbelly’s on Sunday mask less, and Chipotle yesterday the same way. I carry my card in my wallet in case anyone wants to press the issue. No one said a word at either place. This is Cook County, Illinois, by the way.
I think lefties don't know how to walk back their goose stepping of how they followed the science in the last year. Now they have to admit that this was mostly bullshit and if they follow they are conceding that it was a lie. So I will continue to not wear mine, except at work because I will be fired. But we all have a price and that is mine.
They will never admit they were wrong. Even here we see people who largely defended the left/biden in last year's elections circle around and around how Trump was so much worse from Covid to taxes, even as the left marches forth. It is amazing to watch. Even in this thread you see it with sarcasmic. They refuse to acknowledge they were wrong for falling for mass hysteria and will continue on with it.
Posted in the roundup, relevant here.
Related, and totally pathetic example of brain washing.
I will
“ Whenever Joe Glickman heads out for groceries, he places an N95 mask over his face and tugs a cloth mask on top of it. He then pulls on a pair of goggles.
He has used this safety protocol for the past 14 months. It did not change after he contracted the coronavirus in November. It did not budge when, earlier this month, he became fully vaccinated. And even though President Joe Biden said on Thursday that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear a mask, Glickman said he planned to stay the course.”
Well, to be fair, does anyone believe anything Biden says?
Related, and totally pathetic example of brain washing.
Sounds like his brain wasn't very cluttered and was pretty squeaky clean before being washed.
I can't quite convince myself this is a real person. I mean, he seems like a bad caricature of a person you'd use as an obvious idiot character in a bad novel or TV show. No nuance, just "here's the guy you're meant to hate" as a foil for the protagonist.
I mean, look at the compounding stupidity. What he did didn't work -- not on him there. The 'rona is very contagious, there's no judgement in being unlucky. But, I mean, It already didn't work for him, so why does he have confidence?
Then, he got the 'Rona. Covid very seldom reinfects. Like one in millions seldom. Call it one in a million. IN the US, lightning strike probability is about 1:500,000 . So, he's pretty immune. But he's still more confident in the mask and googles. That didn't work last time.
But, then, he's also vaccinated.
And, STILL, he's this paranoid. There's just NO WAY a normal, rational human goes this far.
Alas, I'm sure he's real. And I see idiots cover their face with their shirts walking past me, outdoors, 10 feet away who also don't really have a good grasp of the risks, so sure. They exist. But he can't be typical. The writers had to sort through a lot of potential case stories to find someone this far beyond the pale. There's no way they had some random people's stories and just pulled one off the pile. They want specifically to present extreme cases.
Copied it from an article on yahoo. Too lazy to add the link.
Not typical, but there are people like that out there. I have an aunt who has only left her house three times (each time for some medical thing) over the past year. She’s not yet 70 and is fully vaccinated, but she’s scared shitless. I can hardly believe that anyone would be that afraid even to face certain death, but she is. There’s an agoraphobia that runs through that side of the family, but she was pretty normal and fully functioning before last year. This whole thing has really exacerbated mental illness among people who were already susceptible.
I bet that guy was a germophobe before this started.
unfortunately, there are plenty of people like this, and i work with them. their paranoia is off the charts, they will never recover. the good part is, i'll never see them in the office again.
PRES. BIDEN: "Those who are not vaccinated will end up paying the price." https://t.co/qQ7cAyoYUW
Oh, you know what he meant: "I will be signing an Executive Order requiring those without proof of vaccination to pay a COVID Mitigation Fee."
COVID taxes? COVID trading? COVID credits?
an extra bill when the hospital determines you have covid even though you died from a car wreck.
Still on that nonsense conspiracy Ron?
All the Covid deaths are actually natural causes? Hahaha. That’s some Fox News level idiocy
Who claimed they were all "natural causes"? We know for sure that many covid deaths have been "with" but pretty clearly not "from" covid. Hard to say how many now. Hopefully someone will make an honest assessment of it soon.
Are you threatening me, Biden?
I went to a federal office today that had a mask requirement for visitors. All the employees there were wearing masks. I'm fully vaccinated, but visitors were not asked about their vaccination status. What's the point of CDC guidelines when even federal offices do not follow them?
They gave you something that turns out to be nothing.
Biden ordered it. He has to remove the requirement. Executive orders outweigh the CDC.
In Michigan, Governess Whitless has arrived at the following:
As regards the CDC directive [she can hardly just ignore since she has been claiming to follow it for over a year now] businesses can:
1. Put up a sign stating that vaccinated persons do not have to wear a mask.
2. Request proof of vaccination [no one is doing this for obvious reasons]
3. Just keep up the old signs requiring everyone to wear a mask.
Thus far I'm still seeing the old signs that are being increasingly ignored.
Yes, seen mainly number 3 here in metro Detroit. Still waiting for der fuhrer Whitler to admit the "science" she was following was wrong after all.
In New Jersey, Lord Murphy has chosen to ignore the CDC entirely and keep his edicts in place.
Fuck Phil Murphy.
I feel genuine sorrow for anyone who lives in that place, unless they like it and vote for the assholes who run it.
I will be happily voting against Phailing Phil in this November's election. Your sympathy is much appreciated.
I suspect they'll go away after Memorial Day weekend (everyone in my bar is vaccinated! Scout's honor!). Can't be seen encouraging the super-spreader activities of all the rowdy guidos between Belmar and Seaside.
"lol Phil yous gots this one guy on Reasons who fuckin' hates yous"
I'm one of many.
Two. How badly do you need to suck in Massachusetts, to carpetbag down to New Jersey, to be elected Governor? How badly does New Jersey suck, that we voted him in?
you can't even pump your own gas in NJ
In Ohio, Dewine announced that the mandates will end soon... right before a bill to curb his powers (that also overrode his veto) will take effect.
Even left-leaning columnists in New Jersey have begun to say that the restrictions won’t end as long as Murphy is an office
What’s the point of CDC guidelines when even federal offices do not follow them?
To shift the news cycle.
It just takes a few weeks for the science to trickle down to where the plebes do their business.
Are you confused about what “guidance” means?
The CDC issues recommendations. States, corporations and other entities issue rules based on their consideration of the guidance and other factors. You seem to think Fauci is some kind of dictator
Yeah. And?
CDC guidelines have been elevated to the level of divine revelations for the past 12 months. So why are states, corporations and other entities not being consistent, and are not treating guidelines from the CDC as sacrosanct now?
Anthony Fauci is the director of NIAID, not of CDC. And he seems to be keeping his head down of late. Surely that's got nothing to do with the revelations that NIAID had funded coronavirus gof research! Who's with me that in the near future, he'll be allowed to quietly step down and retire into oblivion?
Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn't want to be mistaken for a Republican.
Republicans were most relieved to hear this news.
Heaven forbid he looks like someone with a brain.
That is just not possible. And thus far he has exhibited a level of closed mindedness that just will not allow him to get any smarter.
Hogg is such a virtue signaler that I'm surprised he hasn't picked a female name and started transitioning.
You mean he hadn't transitioned yet? maybe he is waiting till he decides on what he wants to be, maybe a unicorn
Hey, he's identifying as a human being, but nobody's fooled.
And then put his fingers in his ears and went on to say "nanananananana, I can't hear you." Acting like a friggin' child.
Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn’t want to be mistaken for a Republican.
Better to be mistaken for a Parkland School shooter than a Republican.
Seems like he doesn't realize that when the "emergency" edicts expire, or are cancelled by the legislature, or go away some other way, the existing laws in many places making the wearing of a mask other than at Halloween will still be on the books, and a lot of localities can make up budget shortfalls by fining those wearing masks.
Just wondering - - - - - -
Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he
doesn't want to be mistaken for a Republicanwants to hide his resting bitch face.> many left-leaning people have worn masks, even while alone outdoors.
I suspect a few of them wore them while alone indoors as well. I suspect this because I see people alone in their cars with their windows rolled up on the freeway wearing masks.
When one is signalling one's progressive bona fides, don't forget to signal to the mirror as well.
p.s. I will continue to wear a mask shopping because I have no idea of the other people around in me close proximity are vaccinated or not. So grocery stores, barber shops, etc. Basically if the PRIVATE venue asks for me to remain masked I will. But I won't wear them when around people I know are vaccinated, or while walking outdoors, jogging or driving my car, or other stuff like that. Jeepers.
If you are vaccinated yourself, that should be good enough to not wear it at all.
The vaccination protection is only 80% or so. So an unvaccinated person is still a tiny threat. I'll wait until we reach 80% vaccinations rates first.
A tiny risk is still a risk. One that must be weighed against the costs, but a risk is still a risk. When a mild case of the flu makes me miserable why would I want a mild case of the Rona? Besides the STORE ITSELF is telling me to wear a mask, so I will. No shirt no shoes no mask no service. Don't tell me you're one of those assholes who insists on dining at restaurants without a shirt. What do you do when they tell you to leave? Pee on their floor in Constitutional Protest? So brave.
"Don’t tell me you’re one of those assholes who insists on dining at restaurants without a shirt. What do you do when they tell you to leave? Pee on their floor in Constitutional Protest? So brave."
I made a very simple and civil statement; I do not see why or how this triggered you into being an asshole, but you are.
He's not telling you to ignore restrictions; he's telling you that your risk tolerance is absurdly low.
Also, most masks aren't doing shit for the individual; that's more of an aggregate impact thing (and the masks worn generally suck, hence the double mask absurdity.
Go get a shirt and come back without pants. (And call my boxers "yoga shorts" when they complain)
Wow.
If by the 80% protection, you mean the efficacy rate is 80%, this does not mean you have a 20% chance to get infected. It means the rate of getting infected is 80% lower with the vaccine than without.
For example, the Pfizer trial had an efficacy rate of 95%. The interim look that brought about the EUA was done in Nov 2020. At that point the trial had enrolled 43,661 participants with 41,135 of those having received a second dose. 170 people tested positive for COVID in the trial, 162 in the placebo group, and 8 in the vaccine group. So to get the efficacy rate you take 1 - the rate in the vaccine group divided by the rate in the placebo group. Since the sample sizes in each of the two arms are about the same, we can essentially cancel them and get that efficacy rate = 1 - (8/162) = 0.95, the 95% efficacy rate.
Looking at it this way (the correct way), this means your chance of getting it is really, really low.
In other words, 8 out of ~21,000 in the vaccine group got it over the period of the trial: 0.04%. Six months after vaccination, Pfizer reported that 50 out of ~21,000 had gotten symptomatic COVID: 0.24%.
Trials are great for getting good data, but they are too small for low chance things, so we can't read too much into the fact that no hospitalizations have been reported so far by the trials. Fortunately, the CDC reports breakthrough cases, and they report 794 hospitalizations of fully vaccinated people with COVID, where the hospitalization wasn't known to be unrelated to COVID. This is out of ~115 million fully vaccinated people: 0.0007%. Note that this 115 million is disproportionately people who are likely to have a bad outcome if they had caught COVID pre-vaccination.
In other words, your risk from COVID post-vaccination is lower than your risk from flu post-vaccination (which often has an efficacy below 50%).
To be clear: you are welcome to your mask. However, please understand why most people believe COVID to be effectively over for them two weeks post-vaccination.
That is not necessarily "the correct way". A full consideration examines ARR and NNT as well: https://www.healthnewsreview.org/toolkit/tips-for-understanding-studies/number-needed-to-treat/
"The vaccination protection is only 80% or so. So an unvaccinated person is still a tiny threat. I’ll wait until we reach 80% vaccinations rates first..."
You'll be the first to hear when all risks are removed from the world.
If you drive a car, or ride in a car, this comment is pure bullshit.
So then you have stopped driving or riding in public transportation, cause those risks are massive (3-4 orders of magnitude) compared to the risk associated with an immune person relative to covid.
I usually take advantage of the pants loophole. Those signs never say I have to wear pants.
Watch out, sarcasmic will call you a savage listener.
I follow the dietary guidelines set by Savage, and snap into a slim jim
If Randy Savage wasn’t already dead, I’d rather have him as Governor, than Murphy. Murphy doesn’t even have enough common courtesy to give Jerseyans a reach-around.
Team Blue has obeyed a simple refrain—one reinforced ad nauseam by Democratic politicians, the mainstream media, and the country's technocratic elite: Follow the Science and Listen to the Experts.
Perish forbid the refrain should include "Decide for Yourself".
I'm unclear on this whole "Decide for Yourself" thing. Who would I get to scold afterwards?
Oh, that's easy. "Listen to the Experts."
"Who would I get to scold afterwards?"
Yourself.
Tsk, tsk. Someone's been listening to the government again.
"Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn't want to be mistaken for a Republican. On the streets of D.C., I have overheard other people make similar remarks." So have I. One of them was Peter Suderman.
There was recently a study published (I can't be bothered to google it) saying that things like salt and dietary cholesterol were mostly harmless, then at the end of the study the recommended a low sodium and cholesterol diet.
"We have concluded the world is round and not flat. But we recommend caution when sailing into the open ocean as you might fall off the edge of the world."
Which makes one wonder about where the dogma is coming from. Is it the researchers blindly believing in a myth they just debunked? Or is it the bureaucrats that can cut off their funding if the researchers don't include the dogmatic recommendation?
Definitely a bit of both.
"For the duration of the pandemic, Team Blue has obeyed a simple refrain—one reinforced ad nauseam by Democratic politicians, the mainstream media, and the country's technocratic elite: Follow the Science and Listen to the Experts."
What's the point of being a progressive if you can't lord over average Americans? There's really very little difference between the contempt progressives have for average Americans and the idea that people shouldn't free to make choices for themselves.
Meanwhile, the experts at the NIH were funding research at the Wuhan Virology Institute to make souped-up coronaviruses from bats transmissible to humans, and if that isn't profoundly embarrassing to progressives everywhere, it certainly should be.
"A year ago, the idea that the covid-19 pandemic could have been caused by a laboratory accident was denounced as a conspiracy theory by the world’s leading journals, scientists, and news organizations.
----MIT Technology Review, May 13, 2021
"A group of prominent biologists say there needs to be a “safe space” for asking whether the coronavirus came out of a lab."
https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/05/13/1024866/investigation-covid-origin-wuhan-china-lab-biologists-letter/
In a safe space everyone can hear you scream.
+1 Ripley
mostly.
I think its fair to say that the a large portion of the blame for the pandemic falls on the NIH and their practices. This isn't about covering up for the chinese.
What I'd like to know is: Shouldn't mask littering be a Federal Hate Crime by now?
I hear rats are using them for hammocks.
It's no real surprise. The same people bitching endlessly about the CDC are now saying we need to listen to them.
It's almost as if a lot of people had no true principals behind their rationale and were just clinging to whatever was convenient.
"The same people bitching endlessly about the CDC are now saying we need to listen to them."
LOL
The same people saying the CDC shouldn't be making our choices for us are now saying the CDC shouldn't have been so stupid for so long?
And there's hypocrisy in there somewhere. There must be. Otherwise, you're probably just another progressive without even a fig leaf to hide behind.
CDC is the false god of the morons who needed to be told the coast is clear and they can stop crying ... the rest of us were just waiting ... are you the morons or are you the waiting for the morons to stop crying?
Constantly sniping and bitching, with no meaningful dialogue whatsoever...sure sounds a lot like Tony.
Prove you are not or get muted, bitch.
It’s almost as if a lot of people had no true principals
Leave it to shitlunches to put principals ahead of principles.
Spelling is hard.
And racist - - - - - - - -
No, we are pointing out that all those people who were bitching that we needed to listen to the CDC are now saying we should ignore them.
The major criticisms here were that the CDC were overly cautious and behind the science. That has not changed.
Your second point remains valid, but not about the people you think it applies to.
"...It’s almost as if a lot of people had no true principals behind their rationale and were just clinging to whatever was convenient..."
We've noticed that about you, pod and the other lefty shits.
Unfortunately, we backed ourselves into an impossible corner.
Premise 1: Mask mandates are necessary to protect the population from the worst plague since the Black Death.
Accepted.
Premise 2: Masks aren't really required if you're vaccinated.
By accepting premise 1, we have no way of knowing or enforcing premise 2 without instituting some kind of "passport" or set of official documents (to be checked at the entrance of every public space and business) that verifies that you're exempt from Premise 1.
By accepting premise 1, we have no way of knowing or enforcing premise 2 without instituting some kind of “passport” or set of official documents (to be checked at the entrance of every public space and business) that verifies that you’re exempt from Premise 1.
Feature, not bug.
So premise 3 is: You're only allowed to do things if you can prove you were vaccinated or have a negative test.
I offered to show a copy of my CDC vaccination card at a federal office (with a mask requirement for visitors) today. I was told that it would not matter.
I've been informed today that I will need to either show my vaccine card to the official prior to the game, or continue to wear a mask while playing softball. It's a league run by the city.
I'm not sure how that is going to go over, but most people on the team don't seem bothered by it, so, probably, less resistance than I would have expected.
Yeah but how do you drink beer in between batting and fielding with a mask on?
Don't wear a mask. Don't volunteer your vaccination status. If they insist on enforcing it, walk out.
>>Want to keep wearing a mask yourself? That's fine.
it's strange.
If you're not taking my appendix or my wallet, I would prefer you not wear a mask.
Honestly, in a few months anyone wearing a mask is going to be seen like someone wearing neon-colored hair has been the last 40 years--a weirdo or attention-seeking masochist who gets off on not integrating with normal society.
Or a criminal, as lots of localities still have laws on the books that outlaw wearing a mask except at Halloween.
Please stop calling authoritarians "liberals"
That battle has long been lost. It bugs me to no end.
I blame Rush Limbaugh. For a lot of years he'd say "Liberal" for anything Democrat or generally left. Now that progressives (authoritarians by nature -- progressivism is about using the power of government to enact social changes) are extra powerful with the Dems people who bitch about the left keep using "Liberal". The use of that as a pejorative has spread well beyond 90s talk radio.
"Liberal" and "Conservative" as defined by the American political spectrum these days in no way resemble the meanings of the words themselves.
You can blame Rush all you want, but it goes back to FDR who appropriated it after "progressive" became unpopular due to prohibition.
...and Progs of the period were to comfortable with the Nazis and Italian Fascists.
Yeah. Hayek was complaining about the appropriation of the term “liberal” before Rush was even born. Limbaugh effectively conceded the point but succeeded in making “liberal” a dirty word, so that by the end of the Clinton era, nobody would admit to being a “liberal.” Instead, the statists took the term “progressive” out of mothballs and rebranded themselves as that.
And now you hear progressives using "liberal" as a derogatory term for lefties who are insufficiently progressive.
As Glenn Loury put it: Masks were necessary when there was no other way to protect yourself. Now there is.
Masks as used by the public protected no one, especially the wearer...
Staying home was a way to protect yourself.
Not coughing on people was a way to protect yourself.
Foregoing spending several hours in a broom closet with non-family members was a way to protect yourself.
Interacting outside was a way to protect yourself.
Standing crosswind, inside or out was a way to protect yourself.
Not being morbidly obese was a way to protect yourself.
Not being one viral infection away from a ventillator was a way to protect yourself.
The whole thing started with "Two weeks to flatten the curve." not "Two weeks so you can avoid dying."
The science doesn't support any of the Contagion Theater we've been subject to since March 2020...
And the papers that have come out in defense of it have been severely flawed but we do, like masks, have a flurry of studies showing lockdowns were an epic mistake of Biblical proportions.
NOTHING we did was rooted in science or data.
Literally nothing.
I have no idea where this mask nonsense emerged. Prior to 2020, it was very we'll understood and accepted masks have little to limited effectiveness. As such, it's the reason why we never went close to mandating them. Then suddenly out comes a coronavirus and it mysteriously becomes the main line of defense?
It's a NON-PHARMACEUTICAL INTERVENTION for a reason. It's because it's not evidence based they work.
People babble about that unethical weasel Fauci about masks on 60 Minutes, but he was RIGHT in that instance.
Even here the clowns running the show said the same thing. Masks are a joke.
Then poof! Masks were holding society together and protecting life.
This script belongs in the garbage bin it's so stupid.
He was right a lot before they told him to be wrong. Asymptomatic spread has never been a worry, masks don't work, it's too late to stop the virus from spreading.......
All of the theater was dependent on the idea of asymptomatic spread...which turned out to be bullshit.
"Prior to 2020, it was very we’ll understood and accepted masks have little to limited effectiveness. As such, it’s the reason why we never went close to mandating them. Then suddenly out comes a coronavirus and it mysteriously becomes the main line of defense?"
They didn't have any other defense. So they applied the politician's syllogism:
We must do something!
This is something.
We must do this!
", and it's regrettable that for many people these little bands of cloth have become Team Blue's version of the Make America Great Again hat."
Yet no one was forced to wear a MAGA hat to be allowed into a retail establishment or their place of work...
People pepper-sprayed or punched in the face for wearing
a masksomething resembling a mask will see their attackers duly prosecuted for assault rather than lauded for giving Nazis their just desserts.Mr. Soave: (Or Ms.? Who can tell? Why I loathe diminutives...)
Agreed that government mandates are past their "sell by" date. But a point you don't address: Some wag suggested that now we'll have two sets of people: the vaccinated and liars. This puts business owners in the unenviable position of having to believe people who SAY that they're vaccinated. KNOWING that some are lying.
And please hold the "only the unvaccinated are at risk" nonsense. Effectiveness is wonderfully high but not 100%, and we still have a few subsets (certain immunocompromised come readily to mind) who can't be vaccinated. So if some business owners want us to keep masking for a bit, let's give them a break on that at the same time that we're insisting that the government step back. Remembering that there was no shortage at all of people invading businesses, maskless, when it was very much an issue for all of us. And THERE's your real "Contagion Theater," Enemy of the State. Or maybe you think that those 600K corpses were all crisis actors. You know, after they finished up at Sandy Hook and Orlando.
Agreed that government mandates are past their “sell by” date. But a point you don’t address: Some wag suggested that now we’ll have two sets of people: the vaccinated and liars. This puts business owners in the unenviable position of having to believe people who SAY that they’re vaccinated. KNOWING that some are lying.
Side note: You could believe the vaccinated AND the liars and there would be no measurable difference in the results column.
wow dude you made my fucking day with the parody
Mr. Soave: (Or Ms.? Who can tell?)
Especially with that hair.
The whole point of the vaccines is that The People (including business owners) no longer have to care. If you choose not to get your shot then that's on you. Yeah, you might still get COVID. You might also get mumps, measles, shingles, or any number of things which could conceivably kill you, but probably won't. But if you somehow do get infected with COVID and somehow do have complications after that then there are wonderful facilities filled with people that will be happy to care for you until you're better. Life goes on.
"Especially with that hair."
I always just use "Rico."
Efficacy rates are just 1 - (rate in vaccine group/rate in placebo group). In the Pfizer trial, of 43,661 enrolled subjects, with 41,135 having 2 shots at the cutoff date for the EUA submission, 170 people got COVID, 162 in the placebo arm, 8 in the vaccine arm. Since the sample size is so large, we can reasonably assume the sample size in each arm are close enough to ignore. So efficacy is 1-(8/162) = 0.95. Note that these numbers mean that the likelihood you get COVID in a short window of time is incredibly small. Now with more exposures over time, this does increase the probability of exposure, but it is still really low.
Exactly. Ve = .9 => Rvacc is 1/10 of Runvacc, Ve = 0.95 Rvacc is 1/20 of Runvacc...etc.
Get some common sense Brujo. Yes, vaccines are not 100% effective, but once vaccinated the flu is literally a greater risk to your person, flu shot or not.
By your logic, we would need to keep restrictions in place forever, as neither the flu nor a range of other communicable diseases we lived with previously are never going away.
Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn’t want to be mistaken for a Republican.
The immunocompromised are/were susceptible regardless of COVID. Even if the COVID vaccine were 1000% effective, they would still be susceptible and you could still be a carrier for the influenza, RSV, adenovirus, etc. that may kill them.
There are people rolling around with no legs, should we chop off yours? There are people who suffer from debilitating arthritis, should we mash your hands? There are people who are blinded by cataracts, should we poke out your eyes?
Gun control activist David Hogg declared that he intends to keep wearing a mask because he doesn’t want to be mistaken for a Republican.we still have a few subsets (certain immunocompromised come readily to mind) who can’t be vaccinated.Huh...
I thought it worked pretty well as a sort of rhetorical point. You should have just silently left it.
Silence is violence.
He's still trying to hog the attention this little shit?
The vaccines - or whatever the heck they call them - don't protect from getting a virus. None does. Show 'unvaccinated are at risk' is a meaningless statement. We're always at risk of something all the time just like we're asymptomatic of something every day we walk on easy.
Nor is this virus like smallpox. You can't eradicate it. So to vaxx or not vaxx is one of the great false equivalence of our times.
It's, dare I say, a neat scam.
I'll let my natural immunity deal with it. It's not selfishI LOGIC and science. The odds are in my favor. People are foolishly and absurdly living to NOT catch a virus. That's not living. It's living in fear and tyranny.
99.9x% survival people.
WORK WITH ME.
And shove that mask up the ass of some self-righteous pearl clutching, pant shitter. I'd love to shove one up Fauci's ass.
“I’d love to shove one up Fauci’s ass.”
Always enjoy your comments Rufus.
Not sure if he goes that way but to each their own.
Amen. Thank you, sir.
For all PRACTICAL PURPOSES only the unvaccinated are at risk. If you want 100% safety from everything then you should lock yourself in a bubble at home and never expose yourself to any contagion, let alone risk going outside where you're not 100% safe or go in a car or plane or engage in any other behavior which is not 100% safe.
There is no discussing Covid with absolute zero risk advicates.
Yeah, it's just not a rational position. Can't reason people out of those.
"lock yourself in a bubble at home"
And when you die young from a heart attack because of a lack of exercise, you'll find it a relief - because you never dared to live.
Want to keep wearing a mask yourself? That's fine. Want to force anyone else to join you? Fuck off, slaver.
Those who live in blue states and are sick of the senseless restrictions should be thankful Biden is president.
For if Trump were still president, the media and blue state governors would be so biased they would keep restrictions in place through all of 2021 and into 2022 no matter what the science said.
This is probably true, sadly.
OMG yes. Compared to Newsom Biden actually seems to have at least a tiny bit of common sense - and Newsom doesn't seem willing to buck Biden.
And so speaks "officialdom", or might one describe it as "officialdumb"?
Masks have not been determined to be effective at preventing the spread of covid or influenza, but at least their use has been scientifically investigated in randomized controlled trials of their effectiveness at limiting the spread of influenza. Anecdotal observational studies and models (the bases of covid "studies") are not scientific evidence. "Although mechanistic studies support the potential effect of hand hygiene or face masks, evidence from 14 randomized controlled trials of these measures did not support a substantial effect on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."
Nonpharmaceutical Measures for Pandemic Influenza in Nonhealthcare Settings—Personal Protective and Environmental Measures - May 2020 (Emerging Infectious Disease (CDC) Journal)
Jingyi Xiao1, Eunice Y. C. Shiu1, Huizhi Gao, Jessica Y. Wong, Min W. Fong, Sukhyun Ryu, and Benjamin J. Cowling
Lol. The body of evidence on RCT and meta-analysis reviews going back decades falls way in favor of the opposite of that.
Masks have NEVER been found to be effective against influenza. I bet you that study is just another flawed piece of crap like the other ones that support one of the most useless measures out there.
Masks. JFC.
And here are the conclusions from the CDC about those flu studies:
"Unvaccinated Asymptomatic Persons, Including Those at High Risk for Influenza Complications:
No recommendation can be made at this time for mask use in the community by asymptomatic persons, including those at high risk for complications, to prevent exposure to influenza viruses."
Please note the emphasis on 'including those at high risk' - - - - -
How about I won't wear a mask unvaccinated because the SCIENCE NEVER SUPPORTED such a stupid behaviour to begin with.
So the CDC and everyone else can kiss my ass. I have never worn one - and I live in one of the biggest mask cults on the continent in Quebec - from day one. The notion I may have 'unwittingly killed people' is perhaps one of the most evil lies that's come out of this whole idiotic hysteria. I asked someone who said this 'did you you kill people during flu season when we never wore masks?' The idiot cunt just froze unable to respond. That's right fool, wear your false-virtuous amulet. You're nothing but a scared dimwit incapable of contextualizing the actual threat.
Blech.
Especially since they never really meant "masks". Their guidance was always for "cloth face coverings", specifically saying DO NOT WEAR A MASK; those are for professionals only.
Just wondering Rufus what is your objection to vaccination which is proven by blinded placebo controlled studies as well as under real world conditions to be highly efficient and safe. The mRNA ones you can get are the best available.
Your choice of course.
Time will tell in regards to safety. The vaccines do provide some degree of immunity, but no one knows what long term effects (if any) these freshly-minted vaccines might have. We just have to wait for the sand to pass through the hourglass, unfortunately.
How much sand would that be?
>>For them, the pandemic is over.
for some, it was just a giant fucking distraction and power grab.
So now there's a flag comment/mute user option but NOW EDIT FEATURE?

evidencing need is good tactic.
Nothing gets past you.
The 'mute user' feature has been really effective at removing the spam-bots from my view.
The 'edit' feature is scheduled to be installed sometime in the 3rd quarter of fiscal 2027.
I finally got Brayson Tay yesterday.
The political calculus that led to the recent guidance didn't seem to consider that the ability to control people is now significantly reduced.
I'd be more excited about this news if it actually affected me more significantly. Other than briefly donning one when entering private property such as a grocery store that required it, I never had one on. We never worried about antisocial distancing, we never limited gatherings in our home or elsewhere, we never "hunkered down" or engaged in excessive hand-washing or "sanitizing". In short, life didn't really change that much. So now we've been given "permission" (little children) to do what I've been doing all along. So what?
People do realize there's no pandemic right? It's ENDEMIC now.
/rubs temples gently.
Not sure I'm ready for Tony.
We are now all ready for Tony. See the new little icon in the upper right of posts?
He seems to be on rarely now, though he is still around.

I wrote to my governor: if you don’t lift this mask mandate, I’m moving. I’m so beyond fed up.
I’m sure the governor will miss you. Where are you planning to go?
I don't know how Newsom's decision is legal. While the original mandates should never have been upheld, and only were because our judiciary is a bunch of pussies, this rule is just a punishment of the vaccinated to create an advertisement to the unvaccinated. It isn't to stop the spread, which in CA, doesn't exist, even in unvaccinated populations right now. He is admitting that he wants to provide an incentive to the unvaccinated but how is that justification to imposing a pointless restriction on the vaccinated?
This is f'ed up:

Well, he isn't wrong--King was never buried like a fucking Pharoah despite being a deadbeat dad, a drug addict, and a convicted robber.
"If people want to keep wearing masks, that's their right. Everyone who objected to being bullied for not wearing a mask should intuitively grasp that it would be similarly obnoxious to turn around and start barking orders at people who fail to ditch them. I'm not interested in mask-shaming here."
I don't care if they wear masks. I also don't care if they spontaneously burst into flames. Not caring about shit is very liberating. I plan to do a lot more of it.
When I was a kid, I often went to the pediatrician for a follow-up visit, when I was sick.
If the doctor said I was well enough to go back to school, my mother often let me stay home another day, because I still looked miserable.
If the doctor said I needed to stay home another day or two, I often went back to school that day. I was often bouncing off the walls due to excess energy, and my mother felt I was well enough to go back to school.
If my father were alive, he would still wear a mask, despite being vaccinated. Meanwhile, my mother would not wear her mask.
Simply put, my father was a hypochondriac. My mother thought doctors were over-educated idiots.
My father was a very skilled and and accomplished physician. It was not that the doctor was an over educated idiot. Far from it. It is simply that mother knows best.
The doctor knows that as well. Mothers, bless their hearts, are the decision makers when it comes to such matters.
We have little scientific evidence that chicken soup and a few days of rest at home are good if the kiddo gets a cold or flu. Only thousands of years of experience.
Miso soup is the Japanese penicillin.
There was never one shred of evidence that masks did anything at all. There was SO LITTLE evidence that they had to completely misrepresent the Kansas county mask data -- and then released it KNOWING THAT DATA GATHERED SINCE ITS COMPLETION NULLIFIED THE WHOLE THING. They didn't care.
The real issue is that even the idiots in the closed blue states were starting to wake up to the fact that numbers are still cratering in wide-open, maskless states.
Maybe one day they will question the lockdowns, too.
It's fucking embarrassing how you people have bought into this ridiculous culture war panic over a goddamn hygiene measure.
If a piece of cloth is your biggest problem in the world right now, why should I care about any of your problems?
The federal government has given laissez-faire guidance on this matter, against my better judgment. That means individual business owners are free to impose their own rules, and individual communities are free to impose theirs.
The only real problem here are people who insist that a hygiene measure is a signifier of their tribal identity or emotional self-worth.
Just stop whining. It's sad.
Yes, it's sad, and shitstain is the prime example.
Cowardly lefty shits could always crawl under a rock and stay there.
FOLLOW THE SCIENCE TONY
THE SCIENCE SAYS MASKS ARE WORTHLESS
WHY KEEP PRETENDING
Well, they sure don't protect against stuck caps-lock keys.
Masks aren't harmless. Stop pretending there is no downside.
Also, there really isn't evidence that they work in practice. They probably do something, but it is quite possible that people are being given a false sense of security by wearing masks. And that could actually be making things worse. We don't know the answers to all of these questions. Stop being an asshole and pretending that it's all obvious and settled because it just isn't.
A plastic bag would prevent the spread better than a silly cloth mask, you know, if you really want to stop the spread. Science.
I saw a young kid skateboarding today with a mask. No helmet, no knee or wrist pads. But this cool potato was sure staying safe.
change my mind And MOD your post

"Everyone who objected to being bullied for not wearing a mask should intuitively grasp that it would be similarly obnoxious to turn around and start barking orders at people who fail to ditch them."
I disagree, Robby. I think it's our duty to call people out for posturing, especially those who wear a mask outdoors, alone. It's been theater the whole time, and these nincompoops need to be reminded of that.
Somebody wearing a mask outdoors has absolutely no bearing on your life. Why would you harass someone for their personal choice, particularly when it has zero impact on you. I thought this was a libertarian site? What are you, a petulant wannabe fascist?
On the other hand, when an unvaccinated selfish person was not wearing a mask in the presence of others, they should rightfully be called out. Those are pretty different circumstances.
"...On the other hand, when an unvaccinated selfish person was not wearing a mask in the presence of others, they should rightfully be called out. Those are pretty different circumstances."
Fuck off, slaver.
How many people died from the coof in your Silicon Valley nursing homes?
Libertarians are allowed to talk to people and tell them what they think. Don't be a dick, but pointing out to people that what they are doing might not make sense is not fascism.
Harassing people, as the original poster advocated for, is total bullshit.
Yeah, fine. That doesn't make it unlibertarian or fascistic behavior, just being a dick.
This behavior is encouraged by government officials. Fascist governments encouraged mobs to harass and even physically attack their neighbors. I doubt this is a trait unique to fascism, but it is a trait of fascism.
Trump is gone, the virus is an afterthought and yet the delusional mob acts as if nothing happened. They act like petulant children.
Masks - as well as school & playground closures and many other aspects of Covid theatre stopped being about science and safety a LONG time ago
Masks are the incredibly effective at stopping the transmission. It’s boneheaded to lump them into the same category as playground closures.
Playground closures were initially put in place because it was thought that surface transmission was a viable mode of infection. It became pretty clear last year that was not the case. Playgrounds should have been reopened much earlier.
You're incredibly stoooooopid.
Masks are the incredibly effective at stopping the transmission.
You are just making that up. Or repeating something that someone else made up. We don't know how effective masks are. And no one is even seriously claiming that they are "incredibly effective". At best they are marginally effective, somewhat reducing the chance that someone's respiratory droplets end up in your face while you are talking to them.
Living with your head in the sand must be tough when confronted with reality, huh?
What does that have to do with what I said? If you really think masks are incredibly effective, I'd say you are out of touch with reality and are engaging in wishful thinking.
What backs up your "incredibly effective" assertion? No one is seriously claiming that. Especially not with cloth "face coverings". To me "incredibly" implies that you can have high confidence that a mask will prevent you from getting infected in a situation where you would be likely to without one. That's just not how it works with the half-assed masking people do in the real world. At best it's a small marginal reduction in risk.
Zeb, I'm firmly in the camp that holds an ounce of experience as worth a pound of theory. I note that surgeons, and EVERYONE else in any operating theater (or site of contagion) is ALWAYS masked. I'm going with "effective."
Note that I am NOT advocating any mandate for anything here.
I'm not, nor have I been up to the point an anti-masker. I have worn mine indoors in stores and restaurants the entire Covid period. Also outside on recreation trails where required. I am vaccinate too and anyone over 18 that wants to be vaccinated has had ample time to do so.
With that said those still wearing masks have the right to do so. Those expecting anyone but themselves to wear a mask, vaccinated or not, are anti-science and simply bad human beings. No, you DON'T "care" about others. You are lying to yourselves and others if you thing you do. You are oppressive and inconsistent. The risk of getting Covid now is extremely low, the risk of getting a serious case is beyond extremely low and the risk of dying is almost zero. Those worried about living in a zero risk world should not leave their house. That should be the new stay at home order.

I think the bigger issue right now is that less than 40% of America is fully vaccinated. We’re nowhere near the levels required for herd immunity, though with children being vaccinated this summer that should make a big difference.
However if I operated a retail establishment, i would absolutely still require masks on all customers. There are way too many unvaccinated dipshits out there willing to lie and to compromise other people’s health.
COVID has been the largest mass death event in US history. More than 650,000 dead based on confirmed cases alone and excess deaths was even higher considering the regular flu was non-existent last year. It’s still serious and deadly and we have a ways to go before we’re out of the woods.
"...However if I operated a retail establishment, i would absolutely still require masks on all customers..."
Which explains why you're a loser.
COVID has been the largest mass death event in US history.
Wrong, moron, the Spanish Flu was actually worse based on the illness rate alone, and the EXACT SAME public health measures were taken then as they were today.
Got the same result too, who could have seen that coming?
Wrong, Moron.
We’ve reached the same death toll in far less time from COVID than for the Spanish Flu. Check your facts. Didn’t realize we had N95 masks and public sanitation in 1918... dipshit
We’ve reached the same death toll in far less time from COVID than for the Spanish Flu. Check your facts. Didn’t realize we had N95 masks and public sanitation in 1918… dipshit
Wrong, fuckhead. You've already claimed the death toll is higher than what was reported, so you have no standing there.
Masks, isolation, social distancing, public gathering restrictions--these were all put in place 100 years ago. And they failed now just like they failed then.
I've cited these pieces before for subliterate morons who think Harry Potter is high literature, but you can read "Butte and the 1918 Influenza Pandemic," the Kathleen Fargy's Army Center of Military History study of that time period, (money quote: "Despite
quarantines, sanitation efforts, and the isolation of patients, influenza and pneumonia affected hundreds of thousands of soldiers."), and Phil Goodstein's discussion of that time period in "Robert Speer's Denver."
Now quit pretending like you know anything other than jack shit, moron.
It’s almost embarrassing to read your replies and thinking that an adult may have typed them.
You are operating under the fallacy that because protective measures were put in place and that people died means that the protective measures didn’t work. That’s just embarrassingly false. Masks, social distancing, and our modern sanitation have made a huge difference. Without them, we would be looking at millions dead.
Ever wonder why the worst outbreaks took place where people gathered, where social distancing and mask guidance was ignored, why Covid infections and deaths spiked after holidays, and so forth?
Pretending that the response in 1918 was the same as it is today is just the height of dishonesty. Come off it
So you're just going to blow rhetorical smoke instead of reading the cited material? How typical.
No wonder you're a dumbshit progressive.
Without them, we would be looking at millions dead.
::accuses others of using fallacies::
::begs the question::
Ever wonder why the worst outbreaks took place where people gathered, where social distancing and mask guidance was ignored, why Covid infections and deaths spiked after holidays, and so forth?
The top four states for COVID death rates are blue states, you moron.
Pretending that the response in 1918 was the same as it is today is just the height of dishonesty. Come off it
Try reading something that doesn't revolve around the adventures of teenage wizards.
And the intensive care, life support and diagnostic measures were exactly the same. So outcomes are comparable. There was also a war I heard about.
Just because you don't want to deal with the fact that these measures failed twice in 100 years doesn't change the reality.
You want to live like a cowering sheep, have at it. But leave me out of it.
No cowering here. Just fact-based reality and living my life normally.
Take your nonsense elsewhere
There is no point in debating masks.
The vaccines we have are powerful. They are safe and proven effective. Go and get it. So easy now.
Many people are still either confused or mistaken about the efficacy of masks, and considering 60% of America is not fully vaccinated, masks are still very important.
Totally agree about the vaccine though. It’s free and super easy. Just get it.
everyone has had a chance to get the shot. we will never reach herd immunity. good luck with your mental health, you're gonna need it slaver
Team Blue hasn't been operating by the mantra "follow the science", but it was 2020s version of "four legs good, two legs bad".
One of the best indicators that someone is fundamentally ignorant about science is their eagerness in proclaiming how much they love/trust/follow "the science".
LOLOL ! The shots are safe/ the shots aren’t safe. Mask has to be minimum of N-95 rated, when there weren’t enough to go around they changed their tune to wear ANY mask.so, you get the “ vaccine” and still have to wear your mask and social distance. AND, even though vaccinated you can STILL catch Covid. Folks this isn’t about saving lives, it’s about controlling the populace of sheep, ole biden on tv threatening Americans who refuse the vaccine. All it is is an illegitimate usurper in office trying to validate that he actually belongs there. Right now it’s a toss up which one is a bigger POS, fauci or biden, right now they are neck and neck up each other’s rectums. I for one will NOT be threatened by any POS politician OR his witch doctor whose license came out of a Cracker Jack box. And I will NOT be getting the vaccine simply because biden wants me to, so he can somehow legitimize his occupation of the White House.

COVID-19 has not disappeared. Although there is guidance from the cdc, I personally think that for safety, we should continue to maintain some restrictions and wait for most people to be vaccinated to form an immune system. This will be much better.
