Congressional GOP Doctors Urge Americans To Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19
Physician Rand Paul is curiously absent.

So far 232 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the United States. Nearly 142 million Americans (54.2 percent of adults over age 18) have received at least one dose, and almost 97 million (37.4 percent of adults) are fully vaccinated. However, the rate of vaccinations in the United States has recently dropped from the April 13 peak of 3.4 million doses to an average of about 2.7 million per day in the last week.
This slowdown might be because the vaccination campaign is running up against people who are more reluctant to take advantage of the protection offered by the vaccines. In a recent CBS News/YouGov poll, 30 percent of Republican respondents said that they would not take the vaccine and 19 percent answered that maybe they'd get vaccinated.
Ten Republican members of Congress with medical credentials have just released a public service announcement video that urges their fellow Republicans to get vaccinated. The GOP Doc Caucus argues that these are very safe and highly effective vaccines. And importantly, the more Americans who get vaccinated the faster we can all return to pre-pandemic normalcy.
"I look forward to the freedom that I along with my loved ones will regain once the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated," Sen. John Barrasso (R–Wyo.) says in the video. Maryland Rep. John Joyce observes, "Operation Warp Speed brought us safe and effective vaccines, and all in record time." Maryland Rep. Andy Harris declares that "the FDA did not skip any steps," while Texas Rep. Michael Burgess adds that they "cut bureaucratic red tape, not corners."
One Republican medical doctor is a no-show in the video. Perhaps Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) was not invited to participate or had other obligations that prevented him from joining his colleagues in this worthy endeavor. The senator's office did not respond to multiple calls asking those questions.
In any case, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas is right when he says that once Americans are vaccinated, "we can throw away our masks and live life as free as we did before."

If the vaccine works you needn't worry about whether the entire population takes part in the world's largest unsupervised clinical trial along with you. Vaccination rates will also naturally taper off once you've forced 2/3 of the population to take it. But you and Ron are braindead bowls of shit so.
It's nice to see a new poster jump in so confidently and start insulting people without knowing anything about the community.
Or reading the article.
I've been around here since before user registration you stupid bucket of shit. Back when the dumbest person here was White Indian/Mary Stack. I was here when you first started spewing retarded shit here during the GWB administration. Before shreek welched welched on his bet. While Hihn was still in the late stages of dementia.
Nice try at gatekeeping a public forum though you retarded cunt. Really BTFO'd me there didn't ya?
I WAS THE DUMBEST PERSON HERE BEFORE REGISTRATION.
Flexin' again, eh, Fist?
I thought the slow down was from people who saw what their risks actually were and thought better of it. IE, if you are under 50 and not morbidly obese, it's about the same risk as dying from a car crash. Some people simply don't care once they realize this. Not everyone is a chicken little.
"...if you are under 50 and not morbidly obese..."
Given the large percentage of the population that is obese, what does your argument tell us? Looking at how the obesity rates are higher in the middle of the country and the south (mostly red states), what does that tell you?
"...it’s about the same risk as dying from a car crash."
And what lowers your risk of dying from a car crash? Well, I'm sure that there are still some freedom-lovers out there that shun seat belts, and others that are convinced that airbags are an elitist conspiracy.
Now, some will tell us that people don't get vaccines just to protect themselves, but to help protect everyone else. Especially those that can't get vaccinated. Ah, but whatever, right? As long as I would just get a mild case, if I even notice being infected at all, then who gives a fuck if someone else catches it from me and dies, right? At least I wasn't some pussy wearing a mask or being a chicken little and having to get some government vaccine.
I could go through, and point by point refute your doomer bullshit. But it's not like you would read it, or possibly change your mind. Instead, I'll ask you to go take your no-doubt-doubled N95 masks, tie the straps around your windpipe, and try to strangle yourself.
Fuck you. Fuck your poorly tested vaccines. And fuck your cowardice, you mewling piece of shit. You and your lot are managing to continue to wreck both this country's economy and its monetary policy, even after removing that orange-hued 80s Democrat your lot so despised. Kindly fuck off to Europe or somewhere equally sensitive, before you're made to.
"I could go through, and point by point refute your doomer bullshit."
No, no you couldn't. Or you would've. What do you actually know about how "poorly tested" the vaccines are? Probably nothing. Any actual research that you would mention or link to would undoubtedly be something you would be seeing for the first time just now, not some facts that you had already evaluated to base your opinion upon.
"And fuck your cowardice..."
Let's take that ~1% chance of dying and play with it. (The current fatality rate in the U.S. is about 1.8% based on the number of COVID deaths and number of confirmed cases. That is the case fatality rate. The infection fatality rate will be something smaller than that, as it can only be estimated, since not everyone infected ever gets tested.) As a big nerd, I have all of the dice for playing D&D, including 10-sided dice for rolling percentages. Are you willing to bet your life that you won't roll 0-1? What are you really gaining that is worth even that small risk?
It isn't cowardice to hold onto a handrail when you climb or descend a flight of stairs, or go into the clubhouse when you see lightning flash a couple miles away instead of staying out and finishing the 18th hole. These are all perfectly reasonable risk vs reward calculations, just like wearing seat belts, motorcycle helmets, and so on.
The chance that a vaccine will do real, significant, or lasting harm to me is so minuscule compared to the risk from the virus, that is an obvious choice. And since I care about other people, the benefit to them of virtually removing myself from the possible pathways for them to become infected makes the choice even that much more obvious.
"During December 14–23, 2020, monitoring by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System detected 21 cases of anaphylaxis after administration of a reported 1,893,360 first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (11.1 cases per million doses); 71% of these occurred within 15 minutes of vaccination."
The overall rate of reported "adverse events" was 0.2%, but few of those cases were even investigated further as possible severe allergic reactions, likely being due to the relatively mild nature of the events. None of those 21 cases of confirmed anaphylaxis above were fatal, and only 4 patients were hospitalized. 17 of the 21 cases were someone with a documented history of allergies or allergic reactions to various things, and 7 had a history of anaphylaxis (but they had been willing to try the vaccine anyway - who's the coward?).
Compare 0.2% chance of feeling bad enough to bother reporting it to the health care workers giving the vaccines, vs. a 0.2% death rate from COVID (172 deaths per 100,000 population is the current total for the whole U.S. Note that isn't the rate of dying if you get it, but the rate at which people have died out of the whole U.S. population).
A 0.001% chance of a life-threatening allergic reaction to the vaccine (but no fatal cases out of nearly 2 million in that period). Compare to the cumulative hospitalization rate for COVID for people 18-49 is 0.3%, 1.5% for 65+, and 0.5% of the whole population overall.
"Kindly fuck off to Europe or somewhere equally sensitive, before you’re made to."
Are you going to come personally to make me fuck off to Europe? Come at me, bro.
You're in Florida, right?
Yep. And I have a typical Floridian's stock of guns and ammo.
Of course, this just goes to show how little libertarianism actual exists among those that visit this supposedly libertarian website and how little "Reason" suits some of its readers. You want people to have freedom as long as they think that freedom means the same thing you do. You complain about the left and their "cancel culture", but you want only "real Americans" to live here.
What city, bitch?
The city of suck my fat one you cheap dime store hood. It was amusing at first to taunt you types, but it takes no manliness or courage to murder someone, so I’ll exercise a prudent amount of caution and not give you any opportunities to sneak up to me with some kind of ambush. See what I did there? Being intelligent about risk is far better than being all macho and pretending that you are tougher than everyone else.

Oh fuck off. You people are literally the worst fucking people. What is this shit anyhow.
A republican president helped to create a vaccine that GOP congressmen endorsed in the video above, but yes go on with the bullshit that this is some woke leftist conspiracy.
So I, an asthmatic, will have to continue to put up with this fucking bullshit because people like you don't want the vaccine? Because I am somehow a coward? You are a coward. Fuck you. You think I like following restrictions?
The vaccines increase freedom. They make it possible to go back to daily life without risking death more than normal. Its not a difficult fucking concept. I know people who are full no masks fuck restrictions, and honestly I'm a similar way, but guess what? I got the vaccine and so did they all.
But none of us can go to a concert, or be in large groups, not because we are cowards but because assholes like you don't give a shit.
The vaccine works and is perfectly safe. It is not poorly tested. Every doctor I know is a republican! They all endorse it! Its literally just conspiracy theorists like you.
"So I, an asthmatic, will have to continue to put up with this fucking bullshit because people like you don’t want the vaccine? Because I am somehow a coward? You are a coward. Fuck you. You think I like following restrictions?"
How is your health MY concern?
If you are so worried, then YOU follow whatever mindless rules they generate.
I am under no obligation to do a damned thing to help you one way or the other.
Basic human decency would hope that you are considerate of other fucking people. Apparently you aren't and would like to live in a society where these restrictions last forever and people born into higher health risks can't engage in the freedoms that society affords them ... because there is a risk for certain groups.
Freedom is we are all able to do things and live life as we were before the pandemic. Do you people, in pursuit of conspiracy theories, not want that?
And its your concern because things cannot reopen more without a sufficient amount of the population vaccinated.
Thats libertarianism for you?
I haven't heard a single guarantee from anyone that actually matters here that all these bullshit restrictions will end once we've reached some arbitrary percentage of vaccinated people--no masks, no restrictions, nothing. That goddamn ghoul Fauci is saying that kids are going to need to keep wearing masks through the end of the year. What's the fucking point?
If you get vaccinated and still have to wear a mask, then the vaccine is useless. Alma Hernandez, a Democratic state representative in Arizona who did all the rituals and was fully vaccinated, still caught the coof.
That's not even taking into account that the vaccine 1) never went through a full clinical trial, and 2) the companies making them are protected from liability if things go sideways.
And do you think you're the only one here with health issues, or have relatives with health issues? Don't wag your fucking finger at any of us about not being "considerate," when clearly you're only worried about yourself. So you can fuck right off with your guilt-tripping.
damikesc skipped the part of the Bible where we were asked to care about other human beings, it seems. You know, like half of what Jesus said?
The vaccine does not provide sterilizing immunity (https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-19-vaccines-and-sterilizing-immunity-5092148). In other words, even if vaccinated, you can still spread the virus. Other vaccines for some other diseases do in fact provide this anti-transmission protection, but I see people constantly conflating "effective immunity" with "sterilizing immunity", which is not the same thing. One could even argue that, given that the vaccine merely mitigates symptoms, a vaccinated individual who caught the virus but was asymptomatic might be at increased risk of spreading the disease. Why? Without symptoms, that person might be less likely to do the proper thing and self-isolate. Just a thought.
I'm sorry but this is just not true.
Read the article you just linked:
"the results do not reflect complete "sterilizing immunity""
That does not mean the vaccines do not provide it. That means that the clinical trials do not prove sterilizing immunity ... which, of course, because they can't! You can't measure that easily. The study wasn't powered enough to show it.
And it never was going to. They designed the study to measure efficacy, not transmission.
You are misreading the article. It would be very weird if the vaccine prevents you from getting it but you can still spread it.
And the article was posted December 24th. At that point we didn't know, but now, 4 months later, we do! And the results conclusively show that you do get sterilizing immunity (about 80%).
That does not mean the vaccines do not provide it. That means that the clinical trials do not prove sterilizing immunity … which, of course, because they can’t! You can’t measure that easily. The study wasn’t powered enough to show it.
Uh, that's not a good reason to get the vaccine in that case.
Diabetes disorders is growing day by day very frequently. these disorders involves, Cardiovascular disease, Nerve nbh damage (neuropathy), Kidney damage (nephropathy), Eye damage (retinopathy), Foot damage, Skin conditions and many more. but now you don't have to worry VCFDR about these depressions. What "protection?" The shot is NOT a vaccine. People that get the shot still get Covid and still die! I'll pass thank you.
Tuesday-Tuesday-Tuesday, I took my second Pfizer pinprick *Ding!*
And there was no "AAAAAAHHH!" Nor did I feel a little sick.
And as CSN sang about "purple berries": "Prolly keep us both alive."
I can't speak for anyone else, but I plan to live to fight many other days. "Eternal vigilance" and all that.
My only exhaustion isn't from vaxination, but from moral hazards supported by taxin' tha nation.
The get-paid-to-exist checks have got some workers at my store "calling in scared" i.e. "I'm afraid I don't wanna work," so for six weeks, I've been getting some rare retail overtime. No telling how long it will last, but the money's real good, even if I'm wore out and the abode turned into a mess for a while.
Folks, George Washington and his men fought a Revolution in the middle of an even deadlier smallpox epidemic by using social distancing from risky cities, quarantining the infected with armed guards at home doors for two weeks, --no one got in or out but the Doctor--and from variolation, the precursor to vaccines.
It won Independence for the U.S. and the Enlightenment experiment was saved!
Can we modern-day Americans get through a much milder plague with far less strict measures and get our freedom back? With vaccines, we can.
Suck it, Buttercups, take the COVID-19 vaccine if no medical conditions forbid you, and then we can "assume the powers of the Earth" and "secure the blessings of Liberty" in style!
One Republican medical doctor is a no-show in the video. Perhaps Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) was not invited to participate or had other obligations that prevented him from joining his colleagues in this worthy endeavor.
...
In any case, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas is right when he says that once Americans are vaccinated, "we can throw away our masks and live life as free as we did before."
Perhaps, and I know this will be hard to grasp after publishing the Basecamp article but stay with me here Reason; Sen. Paul is an actual libertarian that thinks we shouldn't be forced to wear masks and live our lives according to government mandates, good or bad, sensible or not, in the first place.
Sen. Paul is an actual libertarian
Agreed. Additionally, having already recovered, Paul is probably not planning to get vaccinated, relying on the entire history of immunology prior to 2020 for the conclusion that it is unnecessary.
For those who don't remember, Paul, who may have filibustered the first stimulus last year, got COVID just before the vote and was unable to participate.
There's early research indicating that vaccinating people who have already had and cleared the virus can dramatically increase the chances of adverse reactions as well.
https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/why-vaccine-side-effects-might-be-more-common-people-whove-already-had-covid-19
Mild reactions, yes. These kinds of reactions to a vaccine are mildly to moderately unpleasant, but are a fair tradeoff for being protected from a potentially very serious, even fatal, disease. Natural immunity from a prior infection may or may not be as effective at preventing future infections and may or may not last as long as the protection from being vaccinated.
Unless someone has a history of serious adverse reactions to vaccines (that amount to allergic reactions), or has some other medical reason that they cannot get vaccinated, there is no reason to avoid being vaccinated for COVID, prior infection or not.
Apparently you missed the already had and cleared the virus segment of that comment. Two persons in our household who already had the virus were ill for nearly a week after the initial vaccination - mild my ass.
He's a prior lefty troll, in the same vein as our usual ones. I felt like venting my spleen at it a few times, but otherwise, flagging's probably a better use of your time.
Other than that, Mr. Heinlein, how does it feel to see Friday's turn of events start to take shape in the US?
I have to agree. In my family, the reaction to the Moderna vaccine was worse than COVID itself.
The 5 or 6 T cell papers I've seen put natural and acquired immunity in the same place wrt T cell immunity. So the reason to not get the vaccine if you have a prior infection is that it is not needed. Zero good reasons to add additional risk by getting vaccinated if previously infected.
Conceivably those who've had the infection may need a booster somewhere (Years?) down the line, but that'd be also true for those vaccinated. Otherwise we'd have the anomalous situation of a vaccine's producing better immunity than the natural infection it's supposed to simulate.
Maybe. It will probably just fade into the common cold background.
Natural immunity may not be as effective, may or may not last as long? If so, it'd be a first!
It seems like there are a lot of unknowns for something that is thoroughly tested and understood, and should not be questioned.
Its not like the designated experts were wrong about anything else, right?
I'll be damned if I could find it now, but I read years ago about some vaccine in the 50/60s that caused fertility problems for women 10-20 years down the line. Too bad the information gatekeepers have made it impossible to track down old information or Id share it with yas.
Natural immunity from a prior infection may or may not be as effective at preventing future infections and may or may not last as long as the protection from being vaccinated.
By this logic, everyone that's had chicken pox should get a chicken pox shot.
Where is your scientific research to back up these assertions? There have been 57 reported cases GLOBALLY of coronavirus reinfection after initial infection. There have been 5800+ cases of coronavirus infection after being fully vaccinated. So, contrary to your assertions, natural immunity is far superior to vaccine induced immunity, in terms of efficacy. That's a VERY good reason not to get vaccinated if you've already had the virus; it's unnecessary. We don't vaccinate anyone born before 1957 with the measles vaccine because they've already been exposed to the virus and it's pointless. Just because this is a new "vaccine" it does not change the basic tenets of epidemiology.
With natural immunity in place, the worst he can be accused of is the perception that he is not ritual virtue signaling. Like wearing the mask even if you've had it or have been fully immunized. Without it, you're just not COVID-cool.
"With natural immunity in place..."
How long will any natural immunity he has last? Will it be effective against variants? If he does get infected again, will he still be contagious?
How many people have to die to reach "natural immunity?"
Also: Rand Paul is not a real doctor.
"Also: Rand Paul is not a real doctor."
Huh? He's not an opthalmologic surgeon?
Poster likely thinks Jill Biden is a real doctor.
Same questions about the vaccines.
Same questions re artificial immunity. On top of that I'd also like to know if there are any long term side effects to injecting a genetically modified virus into your self.
Im not particularly anti-gmo myself, but I do understand why people are hesitant about possible unknowable long term outcomes.
If the FDA has deemed them completely safe, why havent they moved on from the emergency use auth? Why are they still forcing the manufacturers to complete the trials?
Never ever trust anything that you arent allowed to question.
Why, the nerve of Dr. Paul, letting actual medical knowledge get in the way of his duty to shill for Big Pharma!
Some SJW twatter tried the "where did you get your medical degree?" snark at him, and got buried. It was amusing.
-jcr
I continue to be amused at the people who denigrate him as being 'just an opthalmologist' and thereby demonstrating their blissful ignorance of the fact that the Chinese doctor who raised alarms in Wuhan in 2019 and was forced to apologize was 'just an opthalmologist'.
I thought the original whistle blower went missing.
Dead of Covid, I thought.
Nope. (He and two colleagues) Blew the whistle about the number of unique respiratory illnesses in his hospital, was silenced, refused, forced to apologize, and then died of COVID, supposedly.
For what it's worth, ophthalmological surgeons are right up there with brain surgeons as far as how they are regarded for their skill and knowledge.
Right. Paul was busy organizing his mask burning rally.
Oh no! Not that!
I didn't mean to imply that mask burning is not important or shouldn't be given top priority.
Which reminds me...when I torch a wicker man on May Day, should it be wearing a mask?
He's also an ophthalmologist. Perhaps he doesn't think that he should be commenting outside of his area of expertise specifically 'as a doctor'.
And I do think that he has been on record (many times) as being pro-vaccine and yet against the government mandating them. Like, I like steak and I think it's delicious. I still don't think you should be forced to eat it - no matter how much you might like it too.
Yes. Within the last week even.
He really is the best of that lot, and I like Cruz. But still.
It's too bad we'll never elect a manlet. Especially a Republican one, now.
He has repeatedly expressed the view that people should get the vaccine... Voluntarily. With proper information.
But why?
Will this now be the case for every flu variant or other common viruses?
Or is it just covid19?
If it's just covid19, what intrinsic to this specific virus itself demands extraordinary caution/effort?
Most people don't get vaccines regularly. Some people occasionally get sick. The vast majority who do get over it, as millions of years of human evolution has adapted us to do so, and move on with their lives.
This fear mongering is designed to foster dependence and is producing literal insanity.
It is the greatest crime against humanity ever perpetrated.
"It is the greatest crime against humanity ever perpetrated."
Might want to slow your roll there. Though I agree, this hysteria is a terrible thing.
Think of the scale.
Hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people whose way of life was either destroyed or irrevocably changed overnight. Children traumatized, the elderly cut off from human contact. Mass hysteria, induced psychosis, developmental errors, mass despair, constant fear, and the new normal model that everyone you pass by is an invisible deadly threat. Obedience uber alles.
And it's all bullshit. It's deliberate, malicious bullshit.

What the fuck is happening [screenshots]
"Most people don’t get vaccines regularly."
If less than ~90% of people were vaccinated against measles, it would be all over the place, instead, we only occasionally get outbreaks among local communities that are under-vaccinated. And what about polio? Small pox? You don't hear about those last two, even though they were enormous killers in the past, because almost everyone got vaccinated for them.
Along with basic sanitation, vaccines are the public health measure that has saved the most people's lives.
"The vast majority who do get over it, as millions of years of human evolution has adapted us to do so, and move on with their lives."
COVID denial at its finest. 1.8% of people in the U.S. that had confirmed cases of COVID died from it. That's over 570,000 at last count, and no, the statistics aren't juiced to make it look worse than it is. The COVID death count is quite close to the number of "excess deaths" beyond what statistics would have estimated the U.S. should have seen in that time frame. If COVID deaths were being exaggerated, there would be a significant mismatch in that. You want to believe that this is no big deal, so you ignore everything that contradicts your preferences.
IFR is around 0.15%.
That is way too low to account for the number of deaths from COVID in the U.S. Unless you think that literally everyone in the country has had it already.
And further, how deadly does a virus have to be to use this level of coercion or more to force people to get vaccinated? If it only killed 300k would it be acceptable? What about 150k?
its also possible the Rand wasn't invited. i don't think many GOP like him
Rand Paul is not an actual libertarian. He is a Republican with some libertarian beliefs. Anyone that puts an (R) next to their name on the ballot is making it clear that being Republican is more important to them than being libertarian
"I look forward to the freedom that I along with my loved ones will regain once the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated," Sen. John Barrasso (R–Wyo.) says in the video.
Where do you think you live man? And do your constituents care more about a shot, or their livelihoods getting wrecked by poorly thought out energy policies of the Biden administration.
GOP in Congress needs to stop playing by democrat rules and start punching back.
Buckleup that quote looks like it caught my attention at the exact same time.
Should have never lost our freedoms.
Some of us didn't.
Not Fair!
What's that got to do with it?
GOP doesn't play by Democrat rules. The GOP thinks they're at a white glove cotillion at a country club, while they're in a knife fight in a back alley with the Dems.
I see the GOP attempting to engage in a political debate against a regular headliner at a comedy club on open mike night. They are not understanding why they are getting booed while the mocking and ridicule of the opposition has the audience laughing and playing along. When they express frustration, they look even more like rubes.
"What's the deal with these Republicans? They want you to show ID to vote? Like they could tell two black people apart who were standing side by side? Ha!"
Incidentally, knifing someone is now socially acceptable in woke circles.
"GOP in Congress needs to stop playing by democrat rules and start punching back."
Um, if more members of the GOP in Congress did more to "start punching back" than have already done so, we'd have yet another violent attempt at overthrowing Congress.
LOL. So violence. Much anger.
If it was a violent attempted overthrow of Congress, don't you think they'd have brought weapons? At least as many weapons as during one of your Antifa peaceful protest nights this year?
Again, to Hell with you, you gaslighting piece of shit. Stop. Fucking. Lying.
Our biggest mistake is not being violent.
These fucking psychotics live in a programmed fantasy that doesn't allow reality to intrude, so restraint won't be admitted anyway.
If reality is not forced upon them, if it doesn't contact them, they will continue to dictate your life via overwhelming State force.
The only violence was when Ashli Babbitt was murdered by a congressional thug.
Who we still don't know the name of. Or why he shot her.
He murdered her because later that evening, while home, a Capitol police officer was going to die of natural causes. That’s why.
"GOP in Congress needs to stop playing by democrat rules and start punching back."
Yeah. Not sabatoging your own senate candidates would have been an excellent start to that, but now that that happened ... they don't control the government. What would you have them do?
The carrot is not beating you with the stick...
He lives in DC. The deplorables in Wyoming don't exist until eletion time.
"I look forward to the freedom that I along with my loved ones will regain once the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated" maybe make it sound less authoritarian. It makes people want to say f off when you treat folks like this.
Yeah, the problem is that that freedom was taken from us by force and government whim, not by the pandemic.
Vaccines are great and it looks like these ones work pretty well, but the key to regaining our freedoms is to either curtail or ignore government dictates.
Fake news. All the GQP wants you to not get vaccinated or wear a mask. Just ask any Democrat.
Oh look, Bailey shilling again for Team D. Pathetic POS.
And, if not shilling for Team D specifically, then expressing favor for the notion of following politicians of all stripes around asking if we're allowed to suck their dicks yet.
"Sen. Barrasso said people should go ahead and suck his dick, I don't understand why Sen. Paul won't return my phone calls. As a doctor, you'd think he'd recognize the inherent social and medical benefits of getting your dick sucked."
Specifically, it was Democrats who loudly and regularly expressed anfi-vaccine sentiments for the better part of a year. Prominent Democrats, not just some obscure back bencher. Members of the leadership. Many of the national media as well.
So much so that it took many weeks before they figured out that Biden is president and it was time to switch sides.
Remember when Cuomo said he wouldn't let New Yorkers get a 'Trump' vaccine?
Very few people are saying don't get vaccinated. They are saying
1. If you are healthy wait a month or 2 so high risk people can get it first
2. People should be allowed to choose to get or not get vaccinated
3. People that don't get vaccinated shouldn't be thrown out of society or extorted until they get vaccinated
4. If you choose to not get vaccinated, and you get sick and [as I have seen myself] die, don't blame anyone but yourself.
The idea would never cross my mind.
5. If you choose to get vaccinated and die within a week as some 5,000 people already have, or you have a miscarriage or stillbirth, as thousands of women already have, or you lose your hearing or vision or become paralyzed, as hundreds of people already have, don't worry, because these vaccines with 6 months of clinical trials and only provisional emergency FDA approval that have never been studied for long-term side effects or efficacy are quite literally the best thing that has ever happened to humanity and your death or dismemberment was just a coincidence.
By the way, I really, REALLY hope that you die you bootlicking piece of shit fascist cocksucker. FUCK YOU.
There is a metric crap-ton of stupid in there.
Let's put a finer point on it. How many people died within a week of watching the Superbowl? How many miscarriages were there last year within a month of eating at McDonald's?
This is why they have epidemiologists look at this stuff instead of internet trolls. There have been more than enough vaccines given to know the risks to a metaphysical certainty.
I think my favorite thing about libertarians is that they constantly employ the appeal to authority fallacy.
Thousands of cases of the exact same symptoms following within hours or days (not weeks) of administration of an experimental vaccine only approved on an emergency use authorization is quite a bit more than the coincidence of having eaten at a burger chain. That's why the epidemiologists that you place so much trust in - the same epidemiologists who, for example, encouraged people to replace animal fat in their diet with hydrogenated vegetable oils for half a century resulting in a huge increase in heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and death - put a "pause" on the experimental vaccine that they approved on a provisional emergency use basis despite it not having gone through the same trial and approval process as every other vaccine since the FDA was established. Since you're self-admittedly too fucking stupid to analyze information without a credentialed expert to help you, just take their word for it that the J&J vaccine poses unacceptable risks. IN 5-6 years after the 6 billion person unsupervised clinical trial that is the COVID-19 vaccine program has finished, we'll find out how many millions of people suffer the long-term side effects that were also missed in the 6 months of trials that were conducted before your trusted overlords decided we all had to take an experimental vaccine in order to leave our house. Hopefully you'll get to watch your parents and kids die of cancer or become vegetables. Maybe an expert can help you understand why you're dying.
The scientific method is the exact antithesis of appeal to authority.
And nowhere did I proclaim the leadership of the CDC as the first last or even any relevant word on the topic.
Cute that you still think science applies. There is only The Narrative.
Did you hear what all those differing scientific opinions from actual Doctors had to say about vaccines and masks? No, me either once they were removed from every outlet.
Keep on parroting chump, they are depending on it.
So you are saying you like the way the FDA normally works? What a libertarian.
"I think my favorite thing about libertarians is that they constantly employ the appeal to authority fallacy."
You've confused Reason with libertarians.
Citation and Medical Sheep-Skin, please.
4. If you choose to not get vaccinated, and you get sick and [as I have seen myself] die, don’t blame anyone but yourself.
Even if my wife feeds me aquarium cleaner?
"4. If you choose to not get vaccinated, and you get sick and [as I have seen myself] die, don’t blame anyone but yourself."
If someone chooses not to get vaccinated, and then they get sick, and someone else they come into contact with catches it from them and gets sick and dies, then I will absolutely blame that person that was selfish and chose not to get vaccinated without a valid medical reason.
“I will absolutely blame that person that was selfish”
Everybody lookout for St. Peter’s judgment over here.
Ill blame the person that caught it from the non vaccinated person for having a body that couldn’t use the vaccine they got well enough. See we can keep the blame going
Yeah, and that's stupid.
As opposed to Jason's comment? Seriously?
Now do AIDS
5. Stop telling people who have already had it that they need to get vaccinated.
There is a guy in my office who has had it, got both shots of the vaccine - weeks ago - and still has to put a mask on to pick up a print from the copier.
There are also just a lot of people out there who have serious concerns or have been told there are risks to particular health. It's okay to not trust "the experts", and particularly those experts who have already been wrong many times over. There's not a single person in the world right now who has any idea if there are any downsides to this a year or more out.
In my state right now, the risks of dying in a car accident on any given day are 3X what they are of dying from covid. So a lot of folks out there are not seeing the wisdom of putting something with unknown long term side effects into their body to cut risks that are substantially less than other risks that we don't even think about.
There are not a lot of serious people who have the data and the ability to understand it who have concerns.
Vaccines are the bestest is not the only opinion. There are serious concerns about mass vaccination of people who recently had covid.
https://www.aier.org/article/if-you-had-covid-do-you-need-the-vaccine/
No serious immunologist would take 'you should get vaccinated after having covid' as the null hypothesis. That would be a surprising result.
Yet interestingly enough, the same epidemiology experts you have told us to unquestioningly worship like you do because you are mindless and unable to analyze information by yourself without some kind of authority's dick to suck, have all encouraged people who have had COVID to get vaccinated anyway, despite early research indicating that previous COVID infection may be associated with a much higher incidence of complications.
Guess how many "serious immunologists" prior to 2020 recommended wearing 2 or 3 fabric masks to prevent transmission of respiratory viruses?
Fuck yourself blind you bootlicking piece of shit. If the 'rona doesn't get you, make sure you don't drown from guzzling Fauci's cum.
Psst, I like the ire. But it's probably better directed at the out and out doomers in this thread, not Cyto.
I agree with you on the vaccine, FWIW. Not being over 75, or (now) a fatass, and also having an autoimmune disorder, why in the hell would I take this thing? For a viral pneumonia with a like 1 in 2,000 IFR for my age and health cohort? Yeah, no thanks.
My 75+ parents and inlaws, OTOH? Sure, take it.
Yes, you already told us upthread that you're too fucking stupid to analyze information yourself and instead worship state authority and look to the state to tell you what to put in your body. Some of us aren't as stupid as you are and also aren't bootlicking statist cocksuckers, so we're comfortable assessing our own risk.
Nice projecting. You are the one who keeps bringing up the fact that the vaccines didn't go through the standard FDA process. Sounds like you love the bureaucracy.
"There are not a lot of serious people who have the data and the ability to understand it who have concerns."
Would these be the same people who have spent the last 15 months constantly lying and supporting the complete rejection of the concept of inherent human rights?
1. Most of the people that are at more risk have gotten at least their first dose by now. Vaccine scarcity is less of an issue, except in more remote locations and poorer neighborhoods.
2. When I am the only one affected by my choices, then my freedom is the obvious highest priority. But infectious diseases go beyond the boundaries of my freedom. I am a potential risk to other people as long as I am not fully vaccinated, so I accept restrictions on my freedom. If people don't want to get the COVID vaccine just because they want their freedom, then other people should have the freedom to not have to be around them.
3. If people don't get vaccinated, entirely by choice, then there will be consequences for choosing not to help protect the rest of society. If you love liberty and freedom, then you love people being held responsible for their choices.
“I am a potential risk to other people as long as I am not fully vaccinated”
The “experts” have been telling people to wear masks after getting vaccinated, which would suggest that even the fully vaccinated are still a potential risk to others, no?
No, it just suggests that the 'experts' are so cautious that they won't commit to even the tiniest amount of risk. Do you remember last year when Fauci said that people might never be able to shake hands again?
"I am a potential risk to other people as long as I am not fully vaccinated, so I accept restrictions on my freedom."
Then, frankly, you don't understand freedom.
Viruses are an act of nature. They are as much your fault as wolves crossing your land to get at your neighbor's cattle. They are as much your fault as a tornado ripping up your fenceposts and driving them into your neighbor's car.
And you have no more right to demand that I get a vaccination, than I have rights to demand that you erect barbed wire around your property to keep the wolves out. If I were to recklessly engage in behavior likely to infect you, like knowingly go out after testing positive, that would be wrong. But in no way is that the same as expecting me to stick a needle in my arm to reduce risk to you or "the public".
I write this, having completed my second dose last week. I urge everyone to get vaccinated. And I urge those making some argument about freedom-infringing moral imperatives to fuck right off. The idea that the government or you has claim on what I stick in my body is wrong with heroine and with vaccinations.
"I urge everyone to get vaccinated."
Why?
If an obese person drives a car there’s an increased risk (v. other people) of a heart attack, which could lead to incapacitation and loss of control, and thus striking a pedestrian. Should obese people be banned from driving?
oh ya I totes believe the (R) guys because (R)
"oh ya I totes believe the (R) guys because (R)"
There are those that are so partisan that they need confirmation that at least some people on their side also believe something in order to not automatically be against whatever the opposing side has to say.
also, John Barrasso (R) Wyoming is an idiot.
"I look forward to the freedom that I along with my loved ones will regain once the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated," Sen. John Barrasso (R–Wyo.) says in the video.
Maybe you shouldn't have surrendered it in the first place.
The same GOP that was a den of insurrectionist liars the last time you wrote an article you pathetic fucking hack?
How about this: put your money where your mouth is. If these vaccines are, indeed, utterly without any risk whatsoever and more effective than any other vaccine ever released, give them non-emergency full FDA approval and rescind the PREP Act so that vaccine makers have to face liability for the damage caused by their products like every other purveyor of food and medicine.
If all is as claimed, nobody should have a problem with that, including the manufacturers. And if nobody balks, taking responsibility would certainly deliver the confidence in the product and process that they claim is due. But then again perhaps you'd hear about folks who actually do have problems.
The reason vaccines have pooled liability is because of a flaw in our legal system. It uses judges and juries to make scientific judgements.
Remember Dow Corning and their breast implants? They never caused any of the harms alleged. Yet they went bankrupt due to lawsuits. We even had a court determine that talcum powder caused ovarian cancer, despite a complete lack of evidence or plausibility.
Vaccines are given to tens of millions of people. In any group that size there will be significant numbers of extremely rare diseases. Some will even be disproportionately represented. This is how statistics work. A court cannot handle that.... Particularly in a world in which causation is unprovable but sad stories are more persuasive than rules of proof.
Vaccine makers do not have "pooled liability" you ignorant fucking toad. They have ZERO liability. The government granted them total exemption from civil liability for their products. The government itself was supposed to backstop this with a special fund for vaccine damage. Congress has never funded it. And even if they did there's just a wee bit of incentive for the government to understate or completely dismiss evidence of damage.
Tell me, state worshiper, is there any particular reason why vaccines are different from any other type of medicine used by millions or billions of people? Or any foodstuff consumed by millions or billions of people? Any reason why juries cannot be trusted to render justice in cases of vaccine damage, but they can be trusted to render justice in medical malpractice or product liability cases? Any reason why if vaccines are safe and effective an insurance company would be unwilling to handle the liability instead of the government?
Fuck off and die you fucking authoritarian piece of shit. God I fucking hope you get some unbelievably lingering, debilitating illness.
A. Flagged your comment, because it’s despicable trash.
B. You’re wrong. There is a vaccine compensation fund.
"rescind the PREP Act so that vaccine makers have to face liability for the damage caused by their products like every other purveyor of food and medicine."
Libertarians for tort liability. I think. Really? If you make fraudulent statements and get sued for fraud, sure. But simply because your products might cause harm? Thats the antithesis of libertarianism!
Seriously, where tf are the actual libertarians at?
Hmm. Maybe Rand Paul thinks it's not the job of a senator to give out medical advice. If so, I'd say that is to his credit. I do not want politicians to be moral leaders, or whatever it is these people think they are doing. Their job is to legislate. Preferably as little as possible.
It's the duty of every cretin who scraped through medical school at the bottom of their class and then turned to a career in politics after a few years shoving whatever their local pharmaceutical rep sold them onto their patients to tell us all the proper way to run our lives. After all, if we do exactly as they say they will let us live!
He's an eye surgeon. That's not a bottom of the class sort of speciality.
Well, it's no doctorate in education, we must admit.
But apart from being a senetor it literally is rand Paul's job to give medical advice (grated I think he's the only MD in congress)
Which would be why, while he may advise patients differently and on a case-by-case basis, he doesn't do it as policy. If you look, it seems like he's actually somewhat careful about this. I'm hard pressed to find him giving medical advice to the public. He absolutely uses his medical expertise in confirmation hearings and Senate investigations, but he doesn't generally tell people to "trans kids should avoid getting surgery" or "people who aren't immune should get vaccinated".
Try getting a doctor who has never seen you to write a script for anything... 800 mg ibuprofen for example. They won't do it because despite the fact that ibuprofen is almost universally tolerated in limited amounts, to prescribe for an unknown patient is professional Russian roulette, and they could be held liable and lose their license. Yet it's okay to use those same professional bona fides to prescribe for 300 million patients? Here they can do that without liability because they hide behind their 100% immunity for everything done and said while in the capacity as a legislator.
Doesn't seem to stop some doctors from telling you that (e.g.) you have Coeliac's Disease because your food contains wheat or that a sex change will help your personality disorder.
Yeah, it's his job to give medical advice to his patients as individuals.
Senator Barrasso (R-WY) was a board certified orthopedic surgeon for 24 years before becoming a full time politician. Georgetown University MD ahd Yale University residency.
I ran into a neighbor during my walk this afternoon at lunch. I had worked with him for many years at a previous employer and we talked about the work situation there and how we both were working form home. He has not been vaccinated. Was still deciding. I told him my entire household was. I would have guessed that he would have been one of the first in line, but nope, still deciding.
many people are "still deciding". i've decided to opt out. there is no need for the vaccine. the survival rate is above 99% so i simply see no reason. over the last year i have not change my life except where the king (governor) forced me. we’ve traveled, shopped, gone to the theater, gone out to eat, been in crowded bars and all mostly without a mask or any of the other nonsense -- and i’m still alive and well. the fear machine is working well but i'm not buying what they're selling.
there is no need for the vaccine. the survival rate is above 99% so i simply see no reason.
Both medically and socially. If I get vaccinated, I still have to wear a mask and, as Barrasso unwittingly laments, have forfeited all manner of freedom up to and incluing habeas corpus for marginally increased risk and marginal benefits.
unfortunately there are consequences for opting out, that i'm willing to accept. it seems likely that international air travel will only be allowed for the vaccinated and those with a "vaccination passport". that is a hard pass for me -- won't do it. maybe someday we can travel again but in the mean time we'll enjoy home.
The ones I feel bad for are those working for woke large corporations. Bank of America has told all employees they MUST be back in their office in September, even though most have higher efficiency ratings working from home. But they MUST also prove vaccination or they won't be allowed back in the office. They aren't saying you'll be fired without it, but they really don't have to. Everyone gets it.
is BofA really doing that? isn't it illegal to force someone to take a non-approved, experimental, emergency use only drug?
It would have been under the last administration. But the adults are in charge again.
I wasn't aware that employment law or FDA policy had changed in the last 3 months. Can you point out what changes were made to the law that would make firing an employee for failing to take an unapproved emergency-use-only vaccine not grounds for a wrongful termination lawsuit? Oh wait, let me guess, you know absolutely fuck all about the topic and are waiting for a government official to tell you what to think.
Depends, is it an employment at will state? E.g., Houston Methodist (one of the two or three giant hospital systems here in Houston) is shitcanning anyone not taking the vax. Likely, that'll be found OK, depending on whether they've an employment contract, of course.
I think it's garbage, and I'm neither a lawyer, nor an employment law lawyer. I'm certainly not your attorney. But it's probably OK under Texas employment law.
Youd think, but many colleges are doing the same thing. They allow for religious exemptions signed by a church authority with statement.
it seems likely that international air travel will only be allowed for the vaccinated and those with a “vaccination passport”. that is a hard pass for me — won’t do it. maybe someday we can travel again but in the mean time we’ll enjoy home.
Actually, again it's marginally different than it was before. You used to have to demonstrate immunity to some diseases to travel to some parts of the world. I never went there and AFAIK, nobody's ever checked to make sure I was immune to measles before I went to Canada, France, or Mexico. Go to a doctor to confirm I don't have a disease before going to India or Africa? I shoudn't have to, but I was probably going to do that anyway, vaccine or not. Doing it anyway, no reason to get the vaccine since they're going to take my temperature an do a swab anyway.
"...nobody’s ever checked to make sure I was immune to measles before I went to Canada,"
Which, if we're going to freak about a nasty, contagious disease, should be at the top of the, right? With its R0 of something like 12
But medical consistency was never the point.
"Top of the list," autocorrect. Fuck it, you got the idea.
And persistent. I'm not sure what the common variable is for the number of times the disease has been eradicated from any particular area/population but, in the US, the value is something like 3-5.
My friend is a few years older than me, 60+? so slightly higher risk so I was surprised. My 84 year old father has been vaccinated with no issues. I go out to eat 2 times a week and consciously avoid/limit mask usage when possible. It is not worth pissing everyone off around me at times but I am not supporting those demanding mask usage, if practical. Even vaccinated, I don't think travel overseas is practical now. I was looking into going to Spain but that is not working out. I did spend a week in Hawaii last February though. And I have traveled throughout the midwest.
I did my research and decided to get the vaccine. But that's just for me personally. The 'vaccine passports' can go straight to hell. And hopefully they will, eventually.
I'd have been first in line, too, being in my 60's, and extremely pro-vaccine. Except that I went and caught it before I had the chance.
At first I refrained from getting vaccinated anyway because my doctor told me to wait a bit, and so people who needed it more could get my dose, but now I'm so pissed off about the CDC pretending that natural immunity suddenly isn't a real thing, that I'm on a strike about it.
I didn't spend 4 years in college studying human biology just to be told that I didn't actually have an immune system, and that vaccines are magic.
The CDC has pretty much blown all credibility. The line scientists are elite, but their leadership is entirely political... Which is terrible... And partisan at that, which is worse.
LOL. Yes, government work certainly attracts the elite of the research and medical communities. Good thing the egregious politicization and incompetence is only limited to the leadership that... that you insist we worship and obey and submit to unquestioningly.
Cyto has never once posted anything close to that
Is Reason even pretending to be libertarian anymore?
No, they are now Emote, not Reason.
Ron Bailey hasn't been libertarian for a very long time. There are still a couple libertarians hanging around, but for the most part it's just a bunch of "No borders. No walls. No USA at all." globalists at the helm of Reason.
once Americans are vaccinated, "we can throw away our masks and live life as free as we did before."
Uh, huh. Simply determine "once Americans are vaccinated" and specify the other conditions.
And then next year they'll tell people they need to get vaccinated again.
My uncle got COVID, and he's almost 90. He survived, despite having a couple of other health issues that kept him on his back for several months. Six months later they told him he "might as well" get vaccinated, and then he had an adverse reaction. He didn't die but it was quite a scare for a couple of days.
At this point it's clear too many medical professionals are just going with the flow, afraid of the stigma of suggesting something even slightly different than what feels like popular consensus. And that's not science. Science has gone to shit.
Mass Governor Baker has already talked about the need for booster shots.
Getting vaccinated after having recovered from covid seems a bit silly. I mean, how could a body overflowing with live virus stimulate less immune response than a few drops of solution injected into your deltoid?
That being said.. the wife and I got vaccinated after having had it. For the same reason that we wear a mask around casual acquaintances. To shut people up. We saw the writing on the wall. The wife knows little science, but she can read the room.
You and your wife are so obedient little sheep. Pathetic. That you know better makes you even more worthy of contempt.
Yup sheep.
Sheep who volunteer 6 days a week with children at church and in sports leagues.
We prefer to keep the parents mollified so that we can continue our work helping children.
Prioritizing real people over internet trolls is an easy call.
Nurture and nature. Ugh.
Nice, so you're a child predator as well as an authoritarian bootlicking piece of shit. I hope you get to watch your wife suffer and die slowly and that you follow her after a long, lingering, painful and humiliating illness.
I may not be as enthusiastic as cyto about vaccines, but I think you're reading his comments too negatively.
Overall, I think you'd find yourselves on the same side against totalitarian leftists (aka Global Socialist Worriers Party members).
Do you force the children in your care to wear masks?
Your face mask is as helpful as a swastika armband. I hope your work is as valuable as Herr Schindler's, mask Nazi.
You could do what the illegal aliens do, say you were vaccinated and didn’t get a proof card because you didn’t have a US-issued ID.
All the major pharmacy chains have agreements not to turn away anyone without ID. (The feds will reimburse them and it’s good for the rest of us if the illegals get vaccinated).
^^^^
"Perhaps Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) was not invited to participate or had other obligations that prevented him from joining his colleagues in this worthy endeavor."
Perhaps a real reporter (not a twit cut-and-paste clerk) would have found out which before "going to press".
I disagree on the 'worthy endeavor'. I suspect the only people sitting around waiting for Barraso, Joyce, Harris, and Burgess' approval to get the vaccine are people like Bailey, who've alreay gotten it. People looking for an excuse to call literal state propaganda a 'worthy endeavor'.
Yeah... I am rather sure the effect of this ad is "Who?".
You mean you didn't recognize the names of these biological EXPERTS?! Shame on you! What will they say at the next Authority Worshiping Dick Suckers meeting?
Maybe he didn't want to participate in any messaging that places a condition on personal liberty. But, Reason not being a libertarian publication, I can see how they could miss that angle.
Or, as others have suggested... Ask. These guys like to talk to the press. And they even have people at the office to handle that.
That would assume that Bailey had any interest in finding out why Paul didn't participate, and that this article is not just an advertisement for vaccination, as well as an opportunity to shit on Rand Paul for not encouraging Americans to open wide if they want their freedom back.
"I look forward to the freedom that I along with my loved ones will regain once the vast majority of Americans are vaccinated,"
Idiot. liar, or Stockholm Syndrome? In any case, you're not getting your freedom back. You surrendered them, you showed yourself to be undeserving of them. Whatever they tell you about what hoops you gotta jump through to "regain your freedom" is a lie, they're just going to be forever moving the goalposts. Ask Dr. Fauci about what we have to do to be free and his answer is always "Enough". When the numbers are low enough. When enough people are vaccinated. When enough people follow the rules. Ask him to be more specific about what constitutes "enough", and the little fucker refuses to answer the question, he knows there's never enough "enough". You will never be free unless and until you show that you're willing to fight for your freedom. And I don't mean march around chanting and waving signs, you're going to have to be willing to shoot people in the head, you're going to have to be willing to get shot in the head. These people are playing for keeps, they're not fucking around.
"you’re not getting your freedom back. You surrendered them, you showed yourself to be undeserving of them."
Yeah but he traded his liberty for a little bit of security so he's got that going on. On second thought he probably won't get either.
Correct.
When Jerryskids isn't going for Dadaism, s/he's one of the most prescient, truth-spitting posters who still bothers to show up here. Ignore what they write, at your peril.
So prominent they even named a charity after him!
Another statist rant from RB. Why am I not surprised.
Yeah his articles are always worst case or fear mongering it seems. Was he ever different as a writer?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but a medicine that doesn’t actually stop you from getting the virus isn’t actually a vaccine. It’s more a symptom suppressant.
That's pretty damn racist of you to imply that words have precise meanings.
A vaccine doesn’t stop you from getting the virus. A vaccine causes your immune system to attack a virus. For that to happen, the virus must be in your system, so you’ve gotten it. A vaccine will either prevent the virus from entering cells, or attack the cells that have the virus inside.
LOL
A vaccine has always been introduction of the virus in significantly weakened form to stimulate immune response. The body learns how to respond to the virus in mild form, reducing risk. Then if the virus makes it in again, the immune system already knows what to do.
The mRNA vaccines are brand new, this is first use of them I believe, in that they don't just introduce a low threat version of the virus and let the body do what it's evolved to do, but program cells according to external direction.
Not all vaccines are live virus vaccines with weakened versions of the virus, though many of the big ones are, like the MMR vaccine.
Killed (inactivated) vaccines are made from a protein or other small pieces taken from a virus or bacteria, like the whooping cough vaccine.
Toxoid vaccines contain a toxin or chemical made by the bacteria or virus. They make you immune to the harmful effects of the infection, instead of to the infection itself. Examples are the diphtheria and tetanus vaccines.
Biosynthetic vaccines contain manmade substances that are very similar to pieces of the virus or bacteria. The Hepatitis B vaccine is an example.
Then of course there is the unique situation of smallpox where the first vaccine was cowpox, another, but related, virus.
Yes, thanks for filling in the details
Actually Jeff it is not a libertarian philosophy. Putting other people at risk is a form of aggression.
You've stolen a number of bases both moral and scientific/logical there and violated due process to arrive at your conclusion, dummy.
People without the disease not getting vaccinated aren't increasing anyone's risk, they can't increase your risk of catching a virus they don't have, and passively increasing someone's risk itself isn't an act of aggression. If we hop in your car and you don't fasten my seatbelt for me before you drive off, was it an act of aggression?
You would think that someone who supposedly groks atheism as 'not theistic' in any/all forms would understand that non-actions aren't aggression.
It is not a non action. I can’t pass on the virus unless we come into close contact. I am taking a known increased risk of passing on the virus by not taking an available precaution.
It is more like not fixing the brakes on my car and causing an accident.
People can do as they wish but there is nothing libertarian about it.
It figures mandatory vaxxer Ron Bailey would go full SILENCE IS VIOLENCE !!!
why is reason not live streaming the biden address to congress
One Republican medical doctor is a no-show in the video. Perhaps Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) was not invited to participate or had other obligations that prevented him from joining his colleagues in this worthy endeavor.
Jesus... even reason.com is trolling Mr. Libertarian now. He’s gone onto greater things than you, Ron Bailey. Like appealing to QAnon freaks and people who think the Democratic Party is extracting the blood of their infants. That’s the future. Limited government is the past.
Fuck off. And pay your mortgage and your bets. Both would be surprised to see it.
Pay your bills.
Mr Bailey, I've been gone for several months, and I come back to see you still...broken. What a shame.
There is no factual basis for your conjecture. Could the decline in vaccinations be due to Republican voters' skepticism? The evidence in the survey says no. Independents- a larger population that Republicans- have basically the same outlook. But for some reason, Scientific Writer Ronald Bailey skips over those facts, and instead dives into some screed against Rand Paul.
Here is a Hypothesis, Mr Bailey: The US was creating a stockpile of vaccinations for months while working through testing. And at the same time, we were identifying the people most required to get a vaccination. Perhaps we used the stockpiles we had to get the most at risk pushed through, and now we are getting the "Nice to Haves". Also, we are rolling out vaccinations to rural areas, where you physically cannot vaccinate people with as much density.
Does Mr Bailey consider that the decline in vaccinations might just be the fact that we got all the low hanging fruit? Nah. There's libertarian leaning senators to be bashed here, after all.
According to WorldInfoMeter, 7 Million people currently have Coronavirus. Whether they intended to get vaccinated or not, they cannot do so for medical reasons. So there is another 2-3% of adults. We further have another 26 Million people verified recovered from the virus. With 78% of US over 18, that means around 20 million additional adults who have had the virus and don't need to be vaccinated. Who knows how many are also among the vaccinated, but it is likely that many who know they had the virus didn't bother, or have at least been waiting.
So ultimately ~25 Million adults or so cannot be or don't need to be vaccinated. But, man, let's really keep flogging that "Rand Paul root of our problems" drum.
7 million who had symptoms and were tested. Past tense. Not 7 million current cases.
There’s another billion who had it and had no symptoms. Past tense.
No according to worldinfometers, there are right now 7 million active cases of Covid in the United States. 25.6 Million have "Recovered."
But, man, let’s really keep flogging that “Rand Paul root of our problems” drum.
Flogging a drum makes it sound reasonable and purposeful, just excessive. Like Rand has been speaking out about people getting the vaccine or is otherwise anti-science, anti-economy, pro-lock down, or anti-liberty. This is more like flogging a cat.
Oh good, a vaccine article.
This is where we get a convergence of the Narcissist Libertarian philosophy, i.e., "if it doesn't affect ME then I don't give a shit about anyone else", and the Tribalist Republican philosophy, i.e., "I won't get a vaccine because it makes Team Blue mad".
First, if the only reason you are not getting a vaccine is because Democrats (and a lot of other people BTW) want you to, then you are an idiot. And your name is probably Jesse.
Second, if you are not getting a vaccine because you have determined, based on your M.D. from Internet University, that the risk to you from COVID is small, completely ignoring that while unvaccinated you are a potential plague rat spreading disease to a lot of much more vulnerable people, then you are a sociopath who deserves to be exiled to a small island where your choices won't have any impact on anyone else. Your type is what gives libertarians a bad name as a bunch of self-absorbed narcissists. Go away and die alone somewhere far far away from the rest of us.
So what about the 30% of independents who do not intend to get the vaccine (A larger population than the Republicans, BTW)? How about the 24% of Blacks? In your race to stereotype all those who have declined, how do they fit into your narrative? Are they selfish libertarians? Are a quarter of blacks really crypto-republicans?
The idea that you will call someone selfish for declining to stick a needle in their arm for your benefit is rich, rich irony. But it is good to see that in my absence, you have not changed at all, chemjeff.
Jeff to make a point pretty much all degrees have been internet in the last year.
Works for me. Have the US govt seize an island large enough for all of us, and let us set up our own country.
I have never been so disappointed in america as when I saw the bipartisan panic ruin our country last year.
You create risks for other people every day by going about your business. For example, by driving a car. Are you a narcissist?
You are if you refuse to stop at stop lights or you drive drunk. Lots of things are risky but we take steps to mitigate those risks when we can.
Also some people cannot get the vaccine such as those on chemotherapy or immunosuppressive drugs.
It is not entirely altruistic. Even in younger people a moderate case really sucks and can have lingering effects.
Also it is clear that these masks and mandates are not going away until there is a high level of immunity no matter how much we complain about it. There are also shared economic costs.
So what is the big deal? The longer we wait the longer we need to put up with this crap.
I'll eventually get the shot but i'll wait till the rush is over so I'm not seated next to some sick drunken scum bag at the government center. How many people are like me just waiting for the crowds to thin out
Do they have it at the pharmacies where you live? They gave up on vaccination centers here. It is not bad. You make an appointment. The waits have thinned out. When my wife went for her last one there was no wait at all.

Reason just has this thing with the Pauls..somehow any libertarians who reach out to the "undesirables" must be smeared at every opportunity. Rand's sister died recently, maybe he is in morning for god sakes. Sorry Ron, Rand doesn't live in cosmo world and is a lap dog to the NYT marxists like you...get a GD engineering degree or physics degree before you write any more "science" articles...
Your sarcasm meter, Dizzle. Tap it.
