The Education Establishment Fears You Might Teach Your Kids Unapproved Ideas
Public schools can barely teach kids at all, but their defenders don’t want you trying alternatives.

With families opting out of the faltering public schools in ever-growing numbers, the establishment's attacks on competing education offerings continues apace. Now, a retired teacher insists that private schools may become terrorist training camps. The over-the-top argument is the latest attempt to reinterpret the refreshing viewpoint diversity offered by chosen educational offerings as a danger to the American way of life.
"[T]he American public school is where we learn to be Americans," argues one-time journalism teacher Susan Johnson in a Charleston Gazette-Mail column. "In public schools, the public decides the curriculum. The public votes to elect school boards who decide the facts our children will be taught. We leave high school and enter college or the workforce with a common set of civic norms and agreed-upon facts that are derived from reason, critical thinking and the scientific method."
Johnson contrasts values taught in government institutions with what she sees as nefarious alternatives.
"In charter schools, a private board decides the curriculum. Same for private schools. One board might teach that the earth is flat. Another might teach that the pope is infallible; another might teach he is the anti-Christ," Johnson writes. "Many children are homeschooled using private instructional programs — some that are online — that are marketed for particular religious and political persuasions."
Oh, no! To what dire fate could all of these independently selected curricula lead?
Invoking fearful visions of fundamentalist Islamic schools training terrorists, she asks, "are we very far away from schools like that in America? Proud Boy Academy? Boogaloo Boot Camp?"
This is bang-your-head-on-the-desk silliness, rooted in a fundamental misrepresentation of what public schools are all about. Just last year, The New York Times' Dana Goldstein marveled at the contrasting ideological spin in textbooks crafted for public schools in California and Texas: "The books have the same publisher. They credit the same authors. But they are customized for students in different states, and their contents sometimes diverge in ways that reflect the nation's deepest partisan divides… [C]lassroom materials are not only shaded by politics, but are also helping to shape a generation of future voters."
If this conflict of interpretations is what Johnson means by "a common set of civic norms and agreed-upon facts" the schools in which she taught must use words in extremely unusual ways. Or maybe she's shading the fact that public school curricula are constant sources of struggle over emphasis and ideological content among people with "particular religious and political persuasions."
In truth, disagreements over what kids are taught in public schools are so common that the Cato Institute maintains an online map in an effort to track the various battles. The introduction notes: "Americans are diverse – ethnically, religiously, ideologically – but all must pay for public schools. The intention is good: to bring people together and foster social harmony. But rather than build bridges, public schooling often forces people into wrenching conflict."
Johnson probably knows this — she taught in those schools. Her silly warning that private schools might divert kids into the boogaloo movement is the latest expression of establishment fears that the state is losing its grip on young minds.
"A very large proportion of homeschooling parents are ideologically committed to isolating their children from the majority culture and indoctrinating them in views and values that are in serious conflict with that culture," Harvard Law School's Elizabeth Bartholet huffed last year in a high-profile Arizona Law Review article. Bartholet, who favors a "presumptive ban" on homeschooling, went on to argue that "[p]olicymakers should impose greater restrictions on private schools for many of the same reasons that they should restrict homeschooling."
Once again, it's fair to ask which "majority culture" Bartholet favors: that in California textbooks, or in those of Texas? But that would be missing the point. In less florid language, the Harvard professor preceded the retired teacher in advocating a state monopoly over what children are taught.
"The idea that only government schools can (or should) make people 'American' is a dangerously statist notion that should be rejected," the Home School Legal Defense Association's Michael Donnelly told me via email. "Freedom of education is at the heart of our founding principles of self-governance and liberty. In a free society education should not be one place and one system that seeks to create servile citizens. Rather, education is about helping all learners to achieve their fullest individual potential."
Despite the objections of Johnson, Bartholet, and company, freedom of education is enjoying a boom. In fact, while interest in education choice has been growing for years, (fueling experiments in charter schools, vouchers, tax credits, and homeschooling) it has really taken off in the past 12 months because of the abject failures of the public schooling establishment to effectively teach children during the pandemic.
"COVID-19 has created a strange natural experiment in American education: Families who would have never otherwise considered taking their kids out of school feel desperate enough to try it," Emma Green wrote in The Atlantic last September.
"Comprehensive national data aren't available yet, but reporting by NPR and our member stations, along with media reports from around the country, shows enrollment declines in dozens of school districts across 20 states," NPR reported in October.
And families, by and large, like their new options.
"Private school and traditional homeschool parents remain more positive about their children's progress compared to district school parents," according to February polling by EdChoice. The numbers remain stronger for homeschoolers and private schoolers than for district school families across academic learning, educational development, and social development.
Undoubtedly, many of the families choosing new educational options are teaching their kids ideas of which Johnson and company disapprove. But as children learn perhaps conflicting ways "to be Americans" that they can hash out in healthy discussion and debate, they're wonderfully free of force-fed lessons crafted by smug defenders of establishment-approved versions of the truth.

Now, a retired teacher insists that private schools may become terrorist training camps.
Well, they might have a point. Recall that all our legislators went to private schools...

I'm not sorry for saying this but some things are so beyond question that they are non-negotiable. Children need to learns that:
Black Lives Matter
No human is illegal
Love is Love
Trans rights are human rights
Science is real
The Holocaust happened
If ignorant parents don't believe that, then it is the nation's duty to teach those facts to their children.
ALL lives matter.
An ILLEGAL needs to be deported, and if caught a 3rd time, executed.
Love is love, but if a pedo tries to "love" a child, they need to be killed.
Trans are mentally ill.
Science IS real....and GOD made MEN and WOMEN, and if you were born with a d!ck, you ain´t a chick.
The Holocaust happened, and liberals are willing to make it happen again.
It’s ok to be white.
THE GREAT JOBS OF USA BOYS GIRLS AND OLDERS I must give my thanks to Ashley, who posted here last week comment About system she uses to earn onlin℮... Doesn't that yard sign also have water is life on it?
Women can be men, too!
"'Balls', said the Queen. "If I had two, I'd be King!".
The Holocaust happened and so did the Holodomor.
Our public education institutions downplay and ignore the failures of communism.
Let's give home schooling a chance. Let 100 flowers bloom.
Holodomore never happened and neighter is Chinese concentration camps. Biden told me so
This is exactly why people are seeking educational options.
Black lives matter? Yes, but no more than anyone else's. It should be All Lives Matter.
No human is illegal? Maybe, but their actions sure are. Entering the US without permission is illegal just like me enter your house without your permission is illegal - its called breaking and entering.
Love is love. This is a nonsensical statement that means nothing. One is One. Dog is dog. There is no additional information imparted by this statement. That's what we call a platitude.
Trans rights are human rights. Trans have the same rights as any other American. They can live however they want. That said, I should not be forced to agree with or acknowledge their delusion. If I think I'm the Queen of England, you are under no obligation to address me as "Your majesty."
Science is real. Except, apparently, when it comes to the fact that one's gender is binary and based on your chromosomes. XX makes you female. XY makes you male. If you are XY and 'think' you are female, it is a malfunction of your brain, not the rest of your body.
The Holocaust happened. This is the only statement you made that actually makes sense. You are one for six. A batting average of .167 won't get you in the Hall of Fame but it will get you a job as a public school teacher.
The fact that people want our children to be forced to learn such nonsense is criminal. The parents, not the state, should decide what their children learn. This is not Soviet Russia but we are on our way.
And FYI, Critical Race Theory is actually racist. Ascribing to an entire race of people a negative attribute and ignoring their individual actions or statements is racist. CRT starts with the premise that all whites are racist. How is this any less racist than "All Mexicans are lazy" or "Asians can't drive"? BTW, those statements, like CRT, are also patently false.
Well-stated, Your Majesty.
Love is Love
What they are hiding in this statement is a false euphemism. Making love is having sex. Ultimately, homosexuality is who you have sex with, not who you platonically love. The guy above who paired the statement with children and a threat knows what’s up.
They’ve hidden sex behind love. Instead of “sex is sex” (which it absolutely is not and they know it), it is “love is love”, which can now piggy back on every Christian and moral platitude on its way to decency.
Except, love =/= sex. They are not interchangeable outside euphemisms.
Apparently, calling them sodomizers really ticks them off, even though “love is love”. I guess it peels the blinders off so everyone can see the emperor wears no clothes.
Agree, very well stated.
Rabbi? You might want to brush up on the history of Nazi Germany. That children need to be taught the right things by the state is a page right out of the Nazi Youth manual.
Rabbi is channeling OBL. Nice one, Rabbi.
He's gotten pretty good at it, too.
But he's hot for AOC; ok, she has nice hooters, but still.
of the couple hundred home schooled people I iknow, they ALL hold
Black Lives Matter... yes, and some of them ARE black, yellow, brown, red, latino, chinese, korean, rwandan, indian.... and these kids now ALL of them matter.
No human is illegal they know this, too..... but they ALSO know that many humans are not legally present where they are, and do things that are illegal. The human him/herself is not "illegal". But manyb do engage in illegal activity.
Love is Love yes, love IS love... and sex is something else. God made both, and these kids know it and live it.
Trans rights are human rights Nope. TRans have no more special rights than anyone else. They are HUMAN EINGS< made in Gods image, and have precisely the same righrs as all other humans, These people are intelligent enough to know that there are two classes of people.. some have two X chromosomes, some have one X and one Y. there are NO other types of people, and one type can never become the other. And speaking of science (below) every one of them can explain this to you or anyone else based in pure science.
Science is real Yes, but if you mean the 'science" that has brought us the virus pandemic, mask mandates, lockdowns, three bogus vaccines, the greatest economic reversal in history, the rewrite of "data" to support the UNscientific bilge that half a million people have died BECUAUSE of the viru,s again they willl trear you apart with science. They'll do the same with global "warming" and climate change" too.
The Holocaust happened Yup. They also understand HOW and WHY it happened, and will tell you why they fear a similar event is coming before too much longer, and indeed is already in the works. They are ALSO well aware of the Japanese INternment in the 1940's, because SOME OF THEM are directly descended from some of the victims of that travesty, and many more have learned about this from some who went through that. Many can also tell you of genocide and what is effectively slavery in many other lands round the world, and some have been there or are living there now.
Your list of things smacks of the very stuff being taught in today's gummit skewls that underlies the degradation of society here and now.
Stop lying. No private school teaches the Holocaust didn't happen. My wife and I sent our kids to a private school for one reason: the teachers there, unlike those in government schools, are INTELLIGENT! Public school teachers have ed. degrees, which degrees teach almost nothing worthwhile, despite the name. My father was an Electrical Engineer by trade, and he was 1000 times better at teaching math than ANY teacher at ANY level, AND he taught history better than any public school teacher, and he did so after busting his butt woring 15 hour work day.
^THIS -- The fowl stench of swamp ruts created by welfare education. The most "common" respected professors who know/learned absolutely nothing of the REAL world around them beyond a wood box and book text written by another who lived in a wood box and book text written by, etc, etc, etc....
The fact is the commie-money yielding commie-education has taken the most IMPORTANT part of education away. How to create VALUE instead of how to STEAL it from others using deceitful dodge and shift criminal trickery and gov-gun forces!!!
It’s fine to be white, cis, heterosexual, male, and all 4 or any combination.

"In public schools, the public decides the curriculum. The public votes to elect school boards who decide the facts our children will be taught. We leave high school and enter college or the workforce with a common set of civic norms and agreed-upon facts that are derived from reason, critical thinking and the scientific method."
Puke. "Agreed-upon" isn't how facts work, you stupid cow, and we know goddamn well the only reason you get away with brain-washing the kids is because the public doesn't know what the hell is going on and the brain-washing has nothing to do with reason, critical thinking, or science.
A charitable reading of the statement is that they choose what facts to ignore and not teach because they are inconvenient.
More amusing is this joker saying kids enter the workforce with a common set of civic norms, when they don't even teach a full year of civics and not even a full year of economics. Yet they'll probably have two years of physical education.
And last I checked, public schools like to use the banking model of education which generally doesn't teach reason or critical thinking.
I do not know if it changed but when I was in school federal law mandated you be enrolled in a PE (or health) class for every semester you were enrolled in any other classes.
So 4 years of PE in high school
At my private high school, we did not have PE. All students were required to participate in an interscholastic or intramural sport, no exceptions. Well there was one exception, but the kid had no legs. Still, he was required to be the manager for one of our varsity teams. The regular school day was for academics only. So essentially, our school day ran from 8:15 am to 4 -5 PM every day.
"So 4 years of PE in high school"
#MeToo but it was only worth 1/2 a credit each year.
You get exemptions for other activities. Playing in sports or martial arts can earn you an exemption from PE.
More amusing is this joker saying kids enter the workforce with a common set of civic norms, when they don’t even teach a full year of civics and not even a full year of economics. Yet they’ll probably have two years of physical education.
To be fair, those kids will need to be in good physical shape when they're sent off to the work camps. "Work makes you free" and all that.
I don't know why people hate PE so much. I had it every semester in high school I think and quite enjoyed it.
I had it every semester in college too, despite it not being required because I'm a veteran. Why wouldn't you want to get an A for lifting weights if you already do that, or for playing volleyball, etc... with girls?
beach volleyball with girls [my hands down favorite spectator sport]
LOL! One of mine too! (Although after-game "Hands On" is not a spectator sport, it is always the one most eagerly looked forward to.)
“Agreed-upon” isn’t how facts work
Bingo. But then again, this stupid cunt probably thinks the scientific method involves a bunch of "high priests" in lab coats developing a consensus, not hypothesis, experimentation, and conclusions.
“We chose truth over facts”.
SleepyJoe
Not to be overly quibblous, but science seldom follows hypothesis and experimentation (or observational gathering of empirical data) with "conclusions".
Usually, after the experimentation and data show how accurate a hypothesis was, or how it needs to be altered, it may become a "theory". Now, it can become a "well-supported" theory, like the orbital structure of moon/sun/earth system which predicts quite well the rising of the sun each day and the times of equinoxes, solstices and eclipses; but most of the time a "theory" appears to accurately conform to factual observation BUT we recognize that more data might require that it be changed.
I mean, the CDC has presented us with lots of "conclusions" about how to deal with a pandemic, which are then freely altered for reasons having little to do with science. Leading to my theory that virology is downstream of political power.
Which isn’t much distinguishable from the caricature of the Holy Roman Empire during its heyday.

A madrassa is an Islamic religious school. Many of the Taliban were educated in Saudi-financed madrassas in Pakistan that teach Wahhabism, a particularly austere and rigid form of Islam which is rooted in Saudi Arabia. Around the world, Saudi wealth and charities contributed to an explosive growth of madrassas during the Afghan jihad against the Soviets. During that war (1979-1989), a new kind of madrassa emerged in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region -- not so much concerned about scholarship as making war on infidels. The enemy then was the Soviet Union, today it's America. Here are analyses of the madrassas from interviews with Vali Nasr, an authority on Islamic fundamentalism, and Richard Holbrooke, former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. (For more on the role of madrassas in producing militant Islamists, see the story of Haroun Fazul.)
an authority on Islamic fundamentalism
All of these groups are rooted in a network of seminaries, or as the term is called in the local vernacular, "madrassa." My argument was that the main source of funding for these groups is Saudi Arabia. In fact, this whole phenomenon that we are confronting, which Al Qaeda is a part of, is very closely associated with Saudi Arabia's financial and religious projects for the Muslim world as a whole. ...
You said that the main source of funding for these Islamic extremists--
Or at least the institutions that train them.
-- is whom?
It's Saudi Arabia and its network of charities and the like.
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/saudi/analyses/madrassas.html
What you're saying is that, if we wanted to look for the causes of what's happened -- Al Qaeda and the movement worldwide -- we would have to look to the schools, to the educational system which Saudi Arabia has fostered in the Islamic world?
Just so you know. Ken Shultz has this anal rule he declared is in effect over all conversations between that you can only talk about “Saudi Arabia” if you are referring to their government.
If you are referring to their people or culture or whatever you have to make it explicit you are not talking about the government per se, or Ken will get all pedantic about it.
"Just so you know. Ken Shultz has this anal rule he declared is in effect over all conversations between that you can only talk about “Saudi Arabia” if you are referring to their government."
TDS-addled shit is bent on proving he cannot understand a point someone made.
You're quite good at missing all points other than orange man bad.
Does anyone else imagine this moron's comments in the voice of Nathan the retarded kid on South Park? That would be the one with the sidekick named Mimsy?
That always bugged me about South Park. Jimmy and Nathan were obviously not retarded, they just had speech impediments. Timmy!!!
In order to have terrorists, in order to have supporters for terrorists, in order to have people who are willing to interpret religion in violent ways, in order to have people who are willing to legitimate crashing yourself into a building and killing 5,000 innocent people, you need particular interpretations of Islam.
Those interpretations of Islam are being propagated out of schools that receive organizational and financial funding from Saudi Arabia. In fact, I would push it further: that these schools would not have existed without Saudi funding.
See my note above about the rules Ken has unilaterally imposed on debates about the Saudis.
"Once again, it's fair to ask which "majority culture" Bartholet favors..."
I'd guess Leftist, Progressive, Woke, anti-racist, and Democratic, but that's just me.
Neo-racist, for progressives how words sound is more important than what they mean. Don't ever use the term anti-racism unless its with a qualifier like "anti-rascism, also known as neo rascism", unless you want to ceed the battle to them.
I recently figured out that by anti-racism, wokes mean racism against white people. By racism, they mean racism against black people.
Everyone who is paying even a modicum of attention knows that the prefix 'anti' doesn't mean they are against the thing. It means doing the thing against a different from historic target. Anti racists are racist against whites. Antifa uses fascist tactics against people protesting for limited government. On the right, the anti-woke are trying to go around and cancel progressives.
You use 'non' if you are actually against the thing. Non racists are against racial discrimination. Non fascists believe in the freedom to peacefully advocate for your ideas. Non woke stay the hell off Twitter.
She does not fear a child will become an Antifa terrorist, for example.
Better than a Nazi.
Same as a nazi.
Literally the opposite.
Lie, shitstain.
Fascist- wore black outfits, thought they had license to use violence against political opponents.
Antifa - wear black outfits, think they have license to use violence against political opponents.
I am not seeing a clear opposite, except in the label, but 2hat people do is more important than what they say.
I am not seeing a clear opposite, except in the label
One could also point out that the Nazi's official title was the National Socialist German Worker's Party if we're being pedantic. So for anyone claiming they were far-right, the proof that they aren't is right there in the title.
Of course, people have been stupid about these kinds of minor differences for a loooong time.
So much stupid.
The defining characteristic of the Nazis was maniacal religious devotion to genocide, not their social welfare programs.
So, what you are saying is a self proclaimed socialist party set about genocide and atrocities after they rose to power from obscurity.
My, what a surprise, mein wokenfuhrer.
"So much stupid."
You claim to be educated but are abysmally ignorant of most things. Before you make an ass of yourself (again), Read Tooze' "Wages of Destruction" wherein he tracks the Nazi's control of the economy, neatly paralleling what Lenin did in the USSR (Pipes, "Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime"); Hitler wasn't given enough time.
The Holocaust has to do with Nazism as Stalin's purges have to do with Communism.
Oh, and fuck off and die
Literally the same. Nazis are and were socialists. History, right?
You all do realize that you are wasting your time, right?
But if you just enjoy interacting with a perennial whining adolescent, that of course is up to you.
My late great grandmother had a saying: "I hear what you say, but I see what you do". In other words, my dear Horatio, If you walk, talk and act like a Fascist? No matter what you say? You're a fascist.
I find it funny. Not 10 years ago, the Harry Potter series had Voldemort ban all all private and homeschooling as part of his tyrannical reign in the final book. It was shown as a huge blow to freedom as he now would have total control of the education of all future wizards.
How are so many of the actions of the progressive movement transparently emulating fictional villains?
J.K. Rowling is a bigoted, ignorant TERF!
Rowling has the evil power to observe reality and express her observations in simple, unequivocal statements, which means she's literally Voldemort. If she ignored reality and generated unending streams of incomprehensible word salad, citing Judith Butler, then she's still be cool.
Rowling has the evil power to observe reality and express her observations in simple, unequivocal statements, which makes her literally Voldemort. If she ignored reality and generated unending word salad, citing Judith Butler, she'd still be cool.
How are so many of the actions of the progressive movement transparently emulating fictional villains?
Because they interpret these books as how to manuals? Their favorite is 1984, but they sometimes take inspiration from other sources.
Do you want to
A) Move public money toward private schooling or B) Create a two-tiered system of increasingly shitty public school for poor children and nice private schools for rich people?
More broadly, why do you have all the worst ideas? Is it a gift?
>why do you have all the worst ideas? Is it a gift?
Oh, the irony.
Public schools aren't shitty because of a lack of funds. We spend billions on them, and more per pupil than either private schools or homeschooling.
Public schools are shitty for three reasons:
- They're run by the government.
- They're staffed by unions.
- They're the default. Every single parent who doesn't give a shit about their children's education has their kid in public schools.
The final one is the primary issue. Back when I was in school, this was most evident in foreign languages. As you had to take a foreign language, Spanish was seen as the default, and everyone who had no interest in any language took it. The amount that was learned was abysmal for anyone who genuinely wanted to learn Spanish. On the other hand, French and Latin were only taken by those who genuinely wanted to learn, and those students were at the level of reading literature by graduation.
The trend to eliminate high-achieving schools and advanced-learning tracks is due to reasons 1 and 2. Same with the woke and SEL curriculum changes. If 1 and 2 were better, there would be separate tracks for slow and fast Spanish learners. Problem solved.
But public schools are for the masses, and the masses don't want ambitious types pulling ahead. It's the tyranny of the majority.
I took 2.33 years of Spanish 35 years ago in high school. Both my kids took 4 years in high school. I speaker more Spanish than they do.
BINGO! The balloon Tony floated, with the imaginary scenario on it...neatly popped!
and how would that be any different than our present public school system is now. or are all public schools equally equitable. From the reports I hear they are not.
They are not. It’s patently absurd that your future prospects are dictated by which neighborhood your parents happen to live in.
And private schools give a pressure release for those who care enough about their children's educations to improve their lot in life. Charter schools and vouchers enable them to do that.
Please also, don't forget that low income and failing schools get MORE resources per student. Somehow, it never seems to work because throwing money at a problem not caused by lack of money NEVER WORKS.
It’s patently absurd that your future prospects are dictated by which neighborhood your parents happen to live in.
You're absolutely right here, but here's the thing: this is exactly what's WRONG with public schools.
It’s patently absurd that your future prospects are dictated by which neighborhood your parents happen to live in.
I'm sure I won't find any evidence of you pooh-poohing efforts to expand school choice on these very boards or anything, because you have a well-reasoned worldview and are totally immune to hypocrisy.
"immune to hypocrisy"??? lol.
Tony's label reads "contains no more than 50% natural and artificial hypocrisy". So...could be worse.
Right. And that is what government run schools get you.
Life is a multi-generational effort. You may not like it, but that's the natural order of things.
+100
“.....happen to live in.”
It’s always somebody else’s fault. Everything Is So Terrible And Unfair! (tm)
Perennial, whining, adolescent.
Do you want to
Nope. Dishonest argument. For 2 reasons:
1. We already have a two-tiered system of shitty schools for poor kids.
2. Parents in poor inner city neighborhoods could take a tuition voucher and use it to go to a better school.
Well Tony at least you admit Public schools are shitty and not doing the job. So let's get rid of them, give all families and kids a voucher and let each choose the best school of their choice. That way all kids can have good schools. Bad ones won't exist for long like they do under the current system.
"In a free society education should not be one place and one system that seeks to create servile citizens."
Isnt that the whole point of the progressive compulsory public education system?
Exactly.
The opposite would be that every child must be taught to read, write, do arithmetic, and have a basic knowledge of geography. Beyond that, they actually have to do most of the work themselves; a well run school (IMHO) does nothing more after that than help organize and provoke additional inquiry and learning.
But then, I'm a dreamer.....
More "Pierce vs. Society of Sisters," please!
"the Harvard professor preceded the retired teacher in advocating a state monopoly over what children are taught."
Did someone forget to tell her that Harvard is a private school?
She knows. OBVIOUSLY there should be a separate system for the children of Our Betters (and a small handful of token, selected poors). The problem here is the proles are getting out of line, and thinking they can evade state indoctrination.
Alternative educational options are experiencing a boom right now, which probably has a lot to do with the CDC's changing guidance on opening schools. Too many proles are getting all uppity and finding their own solutions to the problem. Too many proles are finding that they like their own solution better than the public option. They need to get them back in the public schools ASAP before the lose control of the middle class.
Let’s see. Did someone forget that children don’t go to Harvard, so the quote must not be talking about a Harvard professor opining about how children should be educated _at_ Harvard.
Could you possibly have missed the point of that statement more?
If it ain't 'orange man bad', the TDSS-addled shit has no recognition.
The public education establishment fears that parents might escape the public schools ideological indoctrination, and are saying this openly. Johnson invokes the word "public" as if it were magic, instead of being a euphemism for the state. The idea that the state is properly the sole source of shaping how people think is an idea attractive to any totalitarian regime.
I strongly support public schools as a coalition of Americans coming together as taxpayers to accomplish one goal, to prepare the next in line with the proper communication skills, mathematical skills and hands on mechanical skills they will need to survive in a society that exists because of the exchanges of goods and services. A big problem with public schools is when they include history, civics and racial culture teachings with the above mentioned.
As there are literally trillions of facts that could be learned, no one, except oneself, can decide which small number of facts one can learn. One's education doesn't stop at the end of high school or college unless one chooses to stop. Formal education needs to teach basic principles of lifelong learning habits and what is important to the society in which one lives. Beyond that, it is up to you.
Meanwhile if you push back you wind up on a 'hit list' published by a group of teachers and the local DA.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/loudoun-teachers-target-parents-critical-race-theory-hacking
I’ll believe that public school endows children with a common set of unbiased facts when they start covering public choice theory in middle school social studies.
My junior high civics teacher was quite the cynic. My high school civics teacher was a damned John Bircher. While I was never taught public choice theory in school, I was taught a healthy disrespect for gub'ment.
The education establishment are working on steps that will ensure that such bigots are not allowed to corrupt our children's minds.
"To call something public is to define it as dirty, insufficient and hazardous. The ultimate paradigm of social spending is the public restroom."
-P.J. O'Rourke, "Parliament of Whores"
Susan Johnson fears a private school may teach that the Pope is infallible instead of the "public", who are the proper arbiters of what are facts in her mind. Of course, school boards are generally elected in off year and off month elections with the lowest participation rates and therefore dominated by educator class, serving their narrow interests and prejudices.
BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!111!!!!1!!!!
Comedy. Fucking. Gold.
The Ozzy and Harriet colored glasses of education. It's a vision that never existed but which some people think was somehow true during the 1950. But only if you were middle class WASP. Blacks knew better. Latinos with an X knew better. The working poor of any ethnicity knew better.
Everyone knows the truth of the pedophile sex pizza.
See above for an example of shitstain's mental limitations.
Johnson is flailing about for any justification she can find. The unions have been fighting a rearguard action against other forms of education for years. With their behavior over the past year, they're (hopefully) starting to collapse.
I agree. Particularly with what we have to dealing with in the People's Republic of NJ and the Teachers unions. It is almost criminal.
The delivery of educational content has changed forever, thanks to Covid. It will accelerate the departure of children from a sick and rotting public school system. One can only hope their tax dollars follow their children. But the future looks bleak for public schools.
I tell all the younger people I know with school-aged children to school their children in a religious day school, wherever possible. Do it, even if it hurts a lot financially. Public schools are morally valueless, intellectual woke wastelands now. You know what, more and more are listening and pulling out their kids. There will be a cadre of younger parents that opt out of public school. They see how their kids are falling behind. They will find alternatives.
The sooner we can dismantle the intellectually limited and morally valueless public school system, the better.
Which moral values would you prefer the education system force on children?
Judeo-Christian ones.
Just the bits you like I presume. Not the bits about giving all your money to the poor.
"...Not the bits about giving all your money to the poor."
I'm an atheist, but I seem to recall that as being 10%, shitstain
This is all too common among a certain segment of educators. They don't trust parents. I have a friend who is a teacher in SF and he often displays this attitude. I come from long like of teachers, and I can sort of see where this attitude comes from. Parents are human beings and human beings are inherently stupid.
But...
The teacher is not the parent. Choices for the child must come from the parent, not the teacher. This attitude must supercede all others. The Exceptions are for harm. Gosh, I do wish parents wouldn't raise their kids to be Dumbocrats, but it's not my place to intervene. I wish dads wouldn't teach their sons that being smart is for sissies, but it's not my place to intervene. I wish parents with strange cultish religions wouldn't teach their kids weird ass stuff about magic underwear or UFOs or whatever, but it's not my place.
As hard as it is for me, a libertarian who thinks children learn best when children are free to goof off and explore on their own, it's so much harder for teachers from a progressive background who's central guiding principle is that human beings can be molded into "ideal" citizens.
Maybe parents will teach their kids about creationism. So what? If I teach evolution instead and the parents yank their kids out of school for that (true story, I've seen it happen), well they are the parents. Their children will grow up and make their own decisions soon enough. It's not my job to force their kids to attend my school.
This is not what progressives think. This is not what cultural conservatives think. And it's certainly not what wokes think. It's classical liberals and other individualists who disagree and say it's for the parents to raise their children. Others can help, but the the ultimate responsibility is on the parent. Not the state or the school or the teacher.
I’m not sure what’s automatic about the idea that parents should have absolute authority. Not even you believe that anyway when it comes to things like neglect and abuse.
You believe that society can set and enforce standards for how to raise children, if we’re talking about not starving them or keeping them prisoner down a well. Why draw a bright line somewhere between that and making sure they’re properly educated?
Ask literally any human being if they wish they had less standardized education and more parental influence over their future. Some like me were lucky enough to have parents who, for example, gave good financial advice.
Others will probably resent being raised under the assumption that the rapture was imminent, so why bother even reading books?
Because the parents are the people most likely to have the child's best interests in mind. There are bad parents, of course, but until proven otherwise, anything else is second best. The government is incapable of providing love.
"Why draw a bright line somewhere between that and making sure they’re properly educated?"
Oh, I think we have a new user. Looks like he came here from a more liberal outlet. Hello Tony, welcome to reason!
To answer your question, many of us here a so-called libertarians. It is more or less a term that describes a fundamental level of government skepticism when it comes to making the best decisions for a free society.
To answer your question, I, like many libertarians, believe that the role of government is merely in harm-prevention and guaranteeing your rights. Like not being hurt or abused by your parents. Or being able to enforce a contract. However, as libertarians we believe that it is best to leave people alone anywhere where we don't want to prevent destructive events anymore, but where we actually seek to become productive and make progress. We believe that in these productive fields, markets and large groups of people know best about their own interests and therefore the government should certainly not be the only competitor in education. We believe that parents have a better understanding of the best interests of their children than the government. Therefore we draw the line on the border between "preventing destructive effects" and "allowing people to be productive on their own terms".
Oh, I think we have a new user.
I hope this is sarcasm. The Tony sock is older than threading.
Serious question, why do you think Tony (or anyone other than the obvious parodies) is a "sock"? Or are we all sock puppets because we don't use our full legal names (well, except for a few weirdos like Ken Schultz)?
I have no reason to believe Tony is a sock; he's simply a TDS-addled lefty ignoramus.
Why would anyone bother to invent a sock like that?
Yea, well my comment only works if you know Tony is the veteran user that he is. Because even after years, the appropriate responses to his posts would totally fit a new user. I used the ELI5 style for a reason.
'"[T]he American public school is where we learn to be Americans," argues one-time journalism teacher Susan Johnson in a Charleston Gazette-Mail column."'
Or learn to be good little soldiers?
I think Reason sees the handwriting on the wall for free-market hucksterism and is trying to cash out on charter school scams (naturally, by getting lawmakers to funnel public money to them). By reason I mean the Koch brother or whatever.
If you funnel tax money to charter schools but insist on lower standards, such as permitting those tax dollars to fund religious indoctrination, apart from the constitution shredding, the system begins quickly to look indistinguishable from simply having public schools with lower standards.
In short, this incessant peddling of a repeatedly discredited cash grab makes no sense from a libertarian perspective or any other. If you think all kids need to be educated, just support robust funding of public schools. If you think school should only be available to those whose parents can pay tuition, say that, and be taken even less seriously.
Tony advocates for public schools like the one he went to in Baltimore.
Someday maybe you'll wake up to the indoctrination you suffered.
I am fully (mostly) aware of the indoctrination I was subjected to. I will take a secular, well-rounded public school curriculum over the insane dogshit most parents would shove down their kids’ throats in the name of a bronze-age fairy tale.
You can’t escape indoctrination totally, but you can make it as secular and well-rounded as possible.
No, your mental abilities are such that you have no idea how indoctrinated you are.
You prove it pretty much every time you comment.
You nailed it, Sevo. But Tony (and people like him) really does not see it. It is an attitudinal and cultural thing for them.
To clarify, you want to shove a dreary useless genitalia-obsessed fairy tale from ancient times down our children’s throats because that would somehow be good for them.
"You nailed it, Sevo. But Tony (and people like him) really does not see it. It is an attitudinal and cultural thing for them."
THX, but it doesn't take much more than a (decent) grammar-school education to see that when you're handed such evidence as:
"To clarify, you want to shove a dreary useless genitalia-obsessed fairy tale from ancient times down our children’s throats because that would somehow be good for them."
I have no idea what triggered that steaming pile of shit, but over here, shitstain 'argues':

You think a free society is one that forces people to sell their labor at market prices, without any concern for human well-being whatsoever (libertarianism)."
There is simply no use addressing such issues as how food gets to people when dealing with a kindergarten-level 'intellect'.
"If you think all kids need to be educated, just support robust funding of public schools."
Even if you think something should be publicly funded, it doesn't follow that it should be publicly provided.
Government is a lot better at stealing money at gunpoint and writing checks than it is at actually providing services. Do you oppose Social Security in favor of government farms and government nursing homes?
You do realize that not all charter schools are based on religion. In my community non of the charters are religious if people want religious education here they go to the two private religious schools that have been around for over a hundred years.
"the system begins quickly to look indistinguishable from simply having public schools with lower standards."
There is a huge difference between a system where 51% of voters get to choose standards for a monopoly and one where parents can choose from among a variety of lower standard public schools. The choice forces schools to exceed standards. The monopoly only has to meet standards. You can force the monopoly school to buy textbooks that talk about evolution, but you can't force tenured teachers to make it comprehensible.
In practice, charter schools have almost without exception been shown to be corrupt, low-quality scams.
It’s yet another privatization scheme by interests who see a pool of public money they feel would be better off in their hands.
There is simply no libertarian case here except for the shilling for said evil money-grubbing interests. Either we have public schools or we have public money going to private schools, and if you aren’t lowering standards in the process, what’s the damn difference?
Really? The most negative of the studies I had seen were that charters performed roughly on par with public schools. Which, given that some charters are "corrupt low quality scams" would imply that quite a few are outperforming.
Of course one of our resident low-watt bulbs offers yet more lies:
"Statistics on Public School Vs. Homeschool"
[...]
"Academics
Do home-schoolers truly outperform their publicly schooled peers?
[...]
Consistently Higher Percentile Scores
While standardized test scores aren't always the best way to measure academic achievement, studies consistently find that home-schoolers do seem to outperform public schooled students on tests such as the ACT and SAT..."
https://home-school.lovetoknow.com/Statistics_on_Public_School_Vs_Homeschooling
I do have some shirt-tail relatives who home-school for religious reasons, to the detriment of the the kids educations; for shame, for shame.
OTOH, kids growing up imagining that humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time are far less damaging to society than shitstain here who claimed in another thread:
"Tony

Pretty sure it's as worthless to argue against that sort of idiocy as it is to argue with a creationist, and, further, BOTH will vehemently defend their idiocy.
To paraphrase a certain "Bubba": It all depends on what the meaning of "Robust" is". Unfortunately, whatever good intentions those have in pursuing a career in education is diverted by an inculcated "Us vs. Them" employment negotiation pattern of their unions that will never be satisfied and only occasionally slowed when an especially large contract is agreed to. If only the overwhelming amount of tax dollars went to the actual classroom full of students instead of some other diversionary purpose, I might feel more charitable, however it doesn't and I don't. There was a good reason even FDR was against government employee's unions; they corrupt the purpose for government which is to serve the best interest's of the people whom they're supposed to serve.
If what public schools taught was "derived from reason, critical thinking and the scientific method" that might be nice. But if "[t]he public votes to elect school boards who decide the facts our children will be taught" that is not going to be the case.
So the US govement should be the sole indocrinator of what constitutes right thinking, because the saudies fund Islamic schools? What is the point you are trying to make?
A very large proportion of homeschooling parents are ideologically committed to isolating their children from the majority culture and indoctrinating them in views and values that are in serious conflict with that culture.
Well, I had my children home schooled because I didn't want them exposed to the metric system. Had to modify that stance when teaching them about calibers of firearms.
My son's public school was teaching him to read by telling him guess words and look at pictures. And they taught almost zero history.
Why should parents accept that as the superior schooling option? And what kind of culture does poor reading skills and a lack of historical knowledge build?
A very pliable one...
"...one-time journalism teacher Susan Johnson..."
The credential cite isn't helping.
Who do you have to blow to become a “journalism teacher”?
it's a unicorn. if there were journalism teachers there would be journalists. see any around?
It is a very easy class to teach. Journalists do not have to know anything.
It's not a mystery that the two professions with the lowest test scores are often education and journalism.
In my university the journalist majors were eighter people too stupid for philosophy or elementary education, or athlets on the pro fast track.
He hasn't done so in a while, but Tony used to brag about being 'an editor', which would explain a lot.
I don't doubt it, but the extent of his stupidity suggests he's the editor of "The Dog Walker's Weekly", finding its way into trash bins all over the "River Pines Gated Community".
Then he uses this discussion board to find new thoughts. Should probably stop responding to him. ENB does the same with her twitter. Seems to be in meta-discussions with the handful of followers she has.
I flag, refresh the 'tard, but that's an exception. As pathetically idiotic as shitstain proves to be, the level of idiocy fails to match the 'tard.
If you teach your kids “Diversity is a code word for White Genocide” is that an unapproved idea?
Yes! You're supposed to teach them that they're immoral and contemptible if they don't support White Genocide!
Do NOT teach them this:
White self-hatred is SICK!!!
”In public schools, the public decides the curriculum”
Like teaching there’s 64 genders and that facts, data, and the scientific method are “white concepts”
"...are we very far away from schools like that in America? Proud Boy Academy? Boogaloo Boot Camp?"
Public schools not teaching kiddos how to read is unfortunate, but at least the boogaloos aren’t getting them.
The Left is staunchly anti-choice when it comes to education. If they let you choose, they won't be able to indoctrinate your children in the way they intend and prefer.
anti choice is right, my body my choice for education
conformity factories gotta conformity.
The open market works fine for home schooling and private schools. If the school is neglecting to teach the materials the customers want or if they can’t show how well past graduates did after attending their school, the customer will go elsewhere, just as the customer is now trying to go anywhere but the failing public schools. The child of parents who make poor choices, whether the poor choice is home schooling, a poor private school or leaving the child in public school, will statistically not do as well in life but that’s the strength of a free society: many different paths succeed while others fail.
But the failing public schools will keep demanding more and more $ to fund their failure and pay for exorbitant salaries and benefits for the union "heroes". No private business can extort and grow its revenue stream with total neglect and abysmal service and product.
Government is the only organization where failure is rewarded.
Lockdowns, teachers unions refusing to go back to the classrooms, questionable agenda. Didn't Covid and the teacher's unions make the case for school choice stronger than ever?
I purely believe in public schools as a coalition of Americans coming together as taxpayers to accomplish one goal, to prepare the next level with the proper communication skills, mathematical skills and hands on mechanical skills and also a

The robo-fuckers are getting scary. This one apparently learned how to make a slight modification to the text without changing the meaning. I've seen a few bots that copy other users texts lately. I think somebody is using reason comments as a playground or training and testing facility for their bots.
Gracias.
Another shocking piece by Reason. “Tax payer funded unions prefer monopolies to re-educate the masses on liberty ”. Water is wet
"Well, kid, you can have a life of hard work and hope of being taxed 80% over anything you can earn with due diligence. Or you can get welfare, free health care, and every other promise of the politics destroying America.
"However, if you get wounded over the course of pursuit, you might be forced into gravitating toward the latter system anyways, because you'd possibly have to rely on other people exclusively until you can recover.
"However, you could be sent to prison for a crime you did not commit or a crime that makes scarcely any sense to any person who can punch way out of a paper bag while some narcissist of a baby-raping psychopath goes free, robbing from the former system and enjoying the latter system, while you enjoy anything from a mandatory minimum sentence and possible life sentence that prohibits judges and juries from any conscious role in deciding any fact of the case other other than threadbare guilt or innocense."
Um-hmmn ...
My mom has taught special education in Baltimore City MD for thirty three years. She is retiring this coming June. The public never misses an opportunity to criticize teachers. She has told me how the majority of her students never show up for services. In addition so many of her student's parents never show up for scheduled meetings. The majority are on public assistance so work is not the excuse. When neither parents or students are held accountable this is exactly what you get without exception.
"...The public never misses an opportunity to criticize teachers..."
You need to get out more:
"24 Reasons Teachers Are The Unsung Heroes Of The World"
https://www.buzzfeed.com/jonmichaelpoff/teachers-are-real-life-superheroes
There's plenty more piles of dreck available.
Certainly not all teachers qualify as scum, but as a result of the unions, they can't be fired, meaning the scum continue to 'teach'.
Maybe she could organize a Stalinesque reporting system where kids turn in their parents for unapproved ideas and the parents are sent to prison camps or executed. That should keep those unapproved ideas down.
Libertarians for forcing people to pay tax dollars to educate other children in Bible-based history and science.
Someone please explain when the freedom starts. Sometime after you’re finished forcefeeding all our offspring fairy tales and bigotry and making me pay for it? Will there be a general program of crushing the spirit and intellects of the youth before you decide they’re truly ready for freedom?
"Libertarians for forcing people to pay tax dollars to educate other children in Bible-based history and science."
It might seem there's a conscious effort to misunderstand what is written here by others, but it seems to me that Ken got shitstain's number: He is simply too stupid to understand there is a difference between his fantasies and an objective reality.
I've read that Sweden has a voucher system: parents can spend the money on whatever school they like. A lot of them are Lutheran schools, I assume. No witch-burnings so far. Instead, the country is famous for its progressivism.
In public schools, the public decides the curriculum. The public votes to elect school boards who decide the facts our children will be taught.
No, the PUBLIC do NOT decide the curriculum, Local poohbahs push toget THEIR people on the school boards, often BECAUSE of their "woke" or "progressive" bents to begin with. How else do our tax dollars get spent in teaching the kids strange and unsanitary methods of packaging food? Yes, they teach them h how to pacage bananas in condoms And THIS is a "universal good", a "necessary life skill"? And the teacher's unions push all this garbage, hard. I've yet to learn of one private or home school that has any unioni representation. Thus, no infuence from that skanky bunch. (WHY are the teachers in some large cities refusing to work, but insist on getting paid? Hey, didjya all flunk basic economics? Seems like it. zOr is this another one of those "beneficial common values" that homeschool and private school kids "miss out" on? I say GOOD.
I know probably a couple hundred homeschooled kids. The slowest and least academic of them will still run circles round the average gummit skewl kid, blindfolded and hobbled besides.
One of them started a business from the back of his bicycle when he was fourteen, He had earned anough money all on his own to buy a HOUSE when he was "too young" to own it,, so he gavve his money to Dad and Dad bought it. He turned a handsome proifit when he sold it a few years later. Another started his own business from scratch, put all the pieces together himself, no financial help from anyone, ranit for a few years and recently sold it for NINE MILLION. I know anothe rpair, bro-sis, at 12 and 14, who are building their own little business, a bit of help from Dad, but its their idea and hard work. I'll get back to you in a year. ANother launched a coffee business maybe eight years back, has brought to market some VERY popular equipment, owns two other related businesses he bought, and is one of the largest and most successful such outfits iNorth America. One was a law clerk for a Supreme COurt justice for a few years, is now in private practice, as are at least three others I know, same crowd. NOT ONE of the couple hundred is a derelict, in trouble with the law, bankrupt, on the dole, deadbeat parent, or even thier kids introuble. And most of them have many kids, Most fun ones I know.
NONE have learned how to package a banana in a funny shaped baloon. With a couple of exceptions (death in car crashes... not their fault) all who have married are still married, some of them twenty years and more on, with a housefull of children that are smart, responsible, can COMMUNICATE effectively, are VERY well socialised, have multiple useful skills, and will turn out much like their parents.
They are exactly the kind of kids (even the adult ones.. ESPECIALY the adult ones....) that these two hysterical nonsensical biddies despise. Why? Because these two females know they cannot control them as they would do.
And THAT is precisely WHY the couple hundred home schooled people I know ARE the future of this nation. It was folks like this that founded and built this country. And will work to preserve it on THOSE values.
Schools of "Education" are breeding grounds for cultural marxism and authoritarianism (along with racist hate towards European Americans of Christian Faith). They provide zero "education" in the first place. Humans have developed very effective teaching methods since Summaria for reading, writing, and yes math. Get a real degree and then teach (learn how to teach as a teacher's apprentice). End teachers unions and teacher certification...
Children’s education can’t wait. Those of us parents should set a good example for children.
https://www.ku-168.net
And?
the PUBLIC don't choose the educational program, Local poohbahs push toget THEIR kin on the educational committees, regularly BECAUSE of their "woke" or "reformist" bents regardless. By what other means do our duty dollars get spent in showing the children weird and unsanitary strategies for bundling food? Indeed, they show them h how to pacage bananas in condoms And THIS is a "general acceptable", a "fundamental ability"? Furthermore, the instructor's associations push this trash, hard. I've yet to learn of one private or self-teach that has any unioni portrayal. Accordingly, no infuence from that scandalous pack. (For what reason are the educators in some enormous urban areas declining to work, yet demand getting paid? Hello, didjya all fail essential financial matters? Seems like it. zOr is this another of those "useful normal qualities" that self-teach and non-public school kids "pass up?" I say GOOD.

Does anyone know where I can sign my kids up for Boogaloo Boot Camp? Also, do they have adult continuing education? Thanks!
Willingly sending our children to government schools is child abuse.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all."
